Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png is a mandatory summoner spell for 268.png. It allows for devastating combos and to escape even the deadliest ganks.
21.png Barrier isn't quite as versatile as 7.png is and doesn't help as much as 3.png versus burst. However, it is the best option to deal with the pesky assassins 105.png238.png7.png that 3.png can't shield you fully from.
3.png Exhaust is very effective against melee champions. It also has direct synergy with 268.png's soldiers, allowing you to attack them for longer. It is great to counter melee champions like 80.png92.png59.png126.png91.png.
7.png Heal is one of my favourite options as it's the most versatile one. It is especially relevant versus long-ranged skillshot champions like 99.png161.png101.png; secondary sudden burst of movement speed allows you to to efficiently dodge their important abilities. Keep in mind that it also heals your targeted teammate, too.

Less utilized, but still viable summoners:

1.png Cleanse is generally subpar to other spells but it gets bonus points because Azir is a DPS mage. You don't want to idle in CC - you want to keep skewering them with Soldiers, and Cleanse helps you do your job. It's not a pick just against your midlaner(Except 127.png, pick it against her!)( for example, you can't dodge 1.png or 13.png CC, but it's better to have 3.png to negate their burst), but it's a great choice if the enemy team is packed with crowd control.

You have to keep in mind that Cleanse does nothing against Suppressions and Displacements, so you shouldn't get it against 90.png72.png54.png19.png5.png6.png12.png14.png31.png111.png154.png157.png223.png254.png in hopes of countering their CC because it won't work.

I'm never picking these, and just wanted to let you know why:

14.png With 268.png's way of dishing out damage, 3.png is better for the actual killing part. As such, there isn't much reason to pick it on 268.png specifically.
11.png Jungle 268.png is playable with 1402.png. I've personally won quite a few games with that. It requires a fairly different set up and is certainly not very optimal compared to the laning. But, you know? I'm not doing that anymore, and you shouldn't either ;)

12.png is the trademark of toplane. It's a very sound choice if you find yourself in the toplane as 268.png. But Emperor without a doubt belongs in the middle lane.
6.png The reason why it isn't good is because 268.png is very engaged in auto-attacking; you can't even cancel the animation early. Therefore, the orb-walking in teamfights will be fairly slow(compare that to 4.png who stops twice every 3 seconds to throw his Q and W), with most of the time spent actually attacking rather than moving. As such it's not very useful for that. You don't really need it to escape ganks either, not with your azirE.png. So, it's not a very good choice.

Masteries Back to Top

12/18/0 Masteries

With Fervor interaction removed Thunderlord's is the only reasonable choice. Deathfire touch doesn't even come close in comparison, really.

The wall of text below is kind of outdated... I'll remove it after pre-season hits. The mastery page I use right now is the one at the top. I've partly given up trying to decide if 4% AS is better than 2% Magic Damage, same for Vampirism - I decided that since having more AS makes you want more Magic Damage and having more Magic Damage makes you want more AS(same for Vampirism - more damage > more healing) splitting them 3/2 is quite reasonable. Also, 45% CDR seems kind of really good with 7.19 Azir because of 3+ soldier bonus.

Now as for the smaller mastery choices(:

4% Attack Speed VS 2% Damage from Abilities - On paper it might seem like increasing your damage output from soldiers by 4% is better than dealing 2% increased damage with all of your abilities, but it really isn't. The reason here lies behind understanding how Attack Speed works; 268.png gets up to 25.5% Attack Speed passively, gets attack speed runes and up to 60% Attack Speed by levelling his W, and will also get 50% from one of his core items, 3101.png. So you'll have +100% Attack Speed around level 10 already, and at this point 4% Attack Speed makes you go from 200% Attack Speed to 204%, which only accounts for 2% damage increase... and eventually less - just like that other mastery which gives 2% ability damage, except that the other mastery also benefits your Q, E and R. As such it is much better to get 2% Increased Ability Damage.

Fresh Blood VS Feast VS Expose Weakness - Fresh blood is out because it doesn't proc on your soldier attacks. Feast and Expose weakness are both decent choices, my preference is Expose Weakness as you'll often be tagging a lot of enemies in teamfights - therefore making this mastery have a great value. Feast is probably better for the laning phase; so the choice depends on your enemy laner. If you will have a safe laning phase, there is not much point to taking Feast.

Vampirism VSNatural Talent - This one is a pretty tough choice, and honestly right now I feel like the sustain is worth it. Must be a reason why Faker uses it, right? For patch 7.5, my secret sauce is getting 4 in Vampirism and 1 in Natural Talent - that 1 point allows you to save a hit on ranged minions at levels 3 and 4.

Bounty Hunter VS Double-Edged Sword VS Battle Trance - Battle Trance is your jam! DES is nearly as good but 268.png at his core is all about dishing out the sustained damage while staying alive; Battle Trance synergizes perfectly with him.

Runic Affinity VS Secret Stash VS Assassin - 2009.png are very, very strong. But 268.png also benefits a lot from the Assassin mastery; that 2% damage to champions allows you to do that extra little bit of damage while you poke and all-in. Just going by winrates here - you should pick Assassin. Both options are great however. Small note: Pick Runic Affinity with 427.png on your team.

Merciless VS Meditation - Meditation isn't an obvious choice, but I believe it's definitely the better one. Not only this mastery makes your laning phase much better by freeing up your mana a bit, it allows you to completely bypass a mana item such as 3165.png3174.png3027.png later on, which you really don't want to see in your build as 3116.png3115.png are super-core on 268.png and you don't want to delay them by getting mana items first. Also Merciless got nerfed hard in 7.5, so picking Meditation is better than ever. Consider mixing up here, with 2-3 points meditation and 2-3 points in merciless.

Greenfather's Gift VS Bandit VS Dangerous Game - self explanatory. Greenfather's Gift is really hard to make use of as bushes are hard to make use of early on. As for Bandit, you won't even get those 3 extra gold from poking with your soldiers and you shouldn't miss last-hits anyway to get that pathetic 1 gold. Whereas you actually can benefit from Dangerous Game. Small note: Pick Greenfather's Gift with 427.png on your team. No, enemy 427.png won't place bushes on top of you so it's not worth when it's an enemy 427.png ;)

Precision VS Intelligence - a very close choice. Both of these are very good and honestly, it's really fun playing with 45% CDR. However, both pros and statistic's sites agree that Precision is the better choice of the two, and the extra damage it gives seems to be well worth it.

7.19 Patch made leveling W a lot more compelling.

I think it makes sense to put 3 points in Q by level 5(increasing the early game poke potential) and then level W at levels 7,8,9 and 10 to allow for insane DPS from 3-soldier group as fast as possible. Fickle as it is, it's also the highest win % skill order over at Lolalytics.

Standard R>Q>W>E Order.

Although it might seem like maxing W first is a better idea since it allows you to chuck out more soldiers and improves your Attack Speed, I really don't feel this way - you want your Q maxed ASAP to ensure you can reposition your soldiers and to poke harder in lane. E is really more of a one-point wonder since it's used for escaping and overall mobility.

You might choose to level Q at level 3 and E at level 4 for some extra poke damage. I only recommend doing that if their jungler is someone like 19.png or got killed/was spotted ganking some other lane, because you really need your E to escape ganks.

If your ultimate is on cooldown while you hit level 11, I would recommend levelling W instead because you probably won't get to use it until after you hit level 12.

Laning against 74.png is an exception because you'll need a constant stream of soldiers and attacks to keep up with his lane pushing early on. Therefore I prefer to max W first in this specific match-up.

Finally, If you ever find yourself doing 11.png268.png, then maxing W first is better. But

11.png268.png is a very weird thing in general.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Starting with Dark Seal is a very good idea against heavy poke in lane(Like LeBlanc). Eventually you'll want to pick up both rings.
This is usually a better starter - it allows you to be more free with your mana and poke.

Core Items

Both boots are a viable option(Low enemy MR = Sorcs; High enemy MR = Zerks)
Warding Totem is the default. Farsight Trinket is great if you're ahead to keep vision control of the map with permanent wards. Lens Trinket is only to be able to respond to stealthy enemies and Teemo. Don't forget your pink wards!!!
(7.19) Shorter cooldown on Q and a soldier-refresh on E mean that you need mana more than ever; and shorter ranges mean that can't afford to go full glass cannon like before. If you are getting ahead(or your team is getting mercilessly slaughtered) GLP-800 is the better of the two - you need the power now. On the other hand, if the game is quiet and everyone is farming, RoA is a stronger choice.
Such a good bundle of AP, CDR and AS for Azir.
Most of my games my build tries to look like this(7.19 style)
Because of Azir's high AP scaling to base damage ratio, Deathcap is far more useful to Azir than it is to other mages.

Situational Items

Against Zed/Talon and is also a fairly good item in general to get versus burst/AD teams. Note that You'll want Seeker's right after the Doran's+Dark Seal(before stinger/Rylai) if you are to lane against Zed/Talon so you can survive their burst.
If you're having problems with magic burst, you might as well stop having them with this item. It's an extremely effective defensive item and It's worth gettting it in every game against LB and Fizz after core items, but it's also a good one to get against AP teams in general.
This is an interesting option that I rarely get. However, I would get this in match-ups against Lux/Xerath together with Swiftness/Alacrity to dodge absolutely everything they might throw at you.
Great right after Deathcap - especially when the enemy team doesn't get magic resistance items.
An excellent last item for self-protection if Zhonya's/Banshee Veil aren't enough.
Great after Deathcap - especially if the enemy team builds loads of Magic Resistance.
Last but not quite least, this potion is not only used after your build is full. You should also buy and activate it before game-changing decisions take place - namely, right before doing baron and right before you decide to mow down their inhibitor/nexus.
These items are fairly good ones but they didn't make it to my item list after practical testing.
These items have their place as a last item against heavy AD teams where Zhonya is just isn't enough(Randuin is good vs critlord champions, Deadman's is better otherwise - it also has special "Synergy" with Azir by not proccing(and therefore allowing you to kite better) when you attack with soldiers.

Only Sell 1056.png after you've built1082.png1001.png3116.png3101.png  when you need space/gold for an item. It's not worth to sell your Doran Ring to buy anything smaller than 3191.png3211.png1058.png.

Don't forget to purchase 2043.png to ward when you have spare money. Get 2139.png if you feel like a huge fight is about to erupt or when your build is complete.

Finally, replace your boots with a situational item after you complete your build(most often 3285.png so the movement speed isn't lost much)

7.19 talk:

RoA seems like a very interesting first item right now.

New Azir has more need for HP(lower ranges, less safety) and needs more mana(lower CD on Q and can cast more soldiers). I suppose you would normally get Nashor's > Deathcap after that for both insane damage output and solid survivability.

Alternatively you could get Morello together with Nashor's or skip Nashor's altogether. The only problem here is survivability; meaning that Morello first must either be complemented with some defensive items after or be used only against champions that can't threaten Azir(Almost none come to mind)

Sorcs vs Zerks. On the one side of the argument Sorcs seem better because you get insane attack speed from your W now. On the other hand, Azir's poking potential is severely reduced; and without far-reaching AA-Q-AA combo Zerks seem better. I would advise to take Zerks if you play against a team with a lot of magic resistance and diving champions and Sorcs otherwise, just like before. (For example if you play against no-extra MR Ahri, Sorcs are a great choice. If the enemy midlaner is Kassadin, Zerks are better.)

Deathcap is even more insane as a 3rd item for Azir than before(one of the highest AP/base damage ratios) thanks to the addition(return?) of a 0.7 AP scaling shield.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

He struggles to close the gap to you and falls prey easily to your soldiers. His Q is prone to being disrupted by your azirR.png

VS

Ahri

Medium

This is a skill match-up. While she might have a fairly easy time landing her Q and E when you stop for an attack and due to your low movement speed, you can poke her back heavily. On the flip side, her ultimate struggles against yours and will constantly lead to hilarious kills from Ahri bouncing multiple times on it. 1306.png recommended.

VS

Akali

Easy

Even easier and even more hilarious than Ahri. You bully her completely in the early game, and after level 6 you win if she decides to all-in you by throwing her in a difficult position with your ultimate. Further notes: stay behind her ultimate to deny her's and use 2043.png(or, again, your ultimate) to knock her out of shroud when appropriate.

VS

Alistar

Easy

By treading your way carefully around this guy you'll be able to poke him outside of his combo's range. Furthermore your ultimate absolutely shuts down his Headbutt and combo consequently.

VS

Amumu

Easy

He can be a bit threatening with his Q(which will stun and damage even if he'll bounce back on your ultimate), but other than that, he's no big deal at all.

VS

Anivia

Medium

a well-placed wall can interrupt your E mid-way. She also deals tons of damage in general and although her Q is easy to avoid, because Azir is very slow by himself, it's not that hard to get hit by it. On the flip side, she can't do much against your all-ins with ultimate as she's very immobile herself and her Q probably won't connect if you're attacking from the edge of your range. 1306.png recommended

VS

Annie

Medium

You completely outrange her, which is good. Bad news are that she brings lots of death with her nuke combo, especially considering the junglers. 3102.png is nearly a must-have to negate her stun and burst unless it's support annie, in which case you might still want it to negate just the sutn.

VS

Ashe

Easy

An immobile ADC is shish kebab for your soldiers. They usually rely on avoiding them with mobility skills, but Ashe has none - and your range is vastly superior to her too. The only threatening thing in her kit is her ultimate.

VS

Azir

Hard

MAY THE TRUE SHURIMA WIN(*cough* go play draft mode/dynamic queue wtf?)

It's hard because you're very likely to meet Azir mains more often than Azir newbies, although it's certainly an educating experience to play in a mirror match-up against a better foe.

1306.png recommended

VS

Bard

Easy

He brings no direct danger to you and his kit is largely avoidable with smart positioning and your E. on the flip side he also fairly low moblity(in combat, that is) and is very prone to being shish-kebabed by soldiers.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium
268.png is very prone to getting pulled, because to poke, you actually need to get in range of his pull, even if your range is really big! What's more is that your movement speed is low and you'll have to stop momentarily for attacking. So getting pulled is one of the most common misplays that happen to Azir players. As such you'll have to exercise great caution because of that. Other than that, really nothing special - classic shish kebab if he misses the pull.

1306.png recommended

VS

Brand

Medium

His laning phase is fairly oppressive, especially his brandfissure.png which will do tons of damage to you - especially considering how hard it is to dodge with measly 325 movement speed. he can also be very threatening later on with his burst and stun, once again, watch out for his skillshots. If he misses he's just another dead body for your soldiers.

1306.png recommended

VS

Braum

Easy

He's not very good at protecting targets from you, and is not all that good at protecting himself either. The only thing to watch out here for is how he'll interrupt/intercept your ultimate and Q charges with his shield.

VS

Caitlyn

Easy

Another fairly immobile ADC but with high range. You generally shouldn't have any problems against her, but attacking outside her range might prove problematic as it's really quite large. Other than that, shish kebab, as her net is a very weak escape tool.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Skill match-up. It's all about dodging her Q's and W's while hitting your stuff on her. you're on around equal footing the entire game.
1306.png recommended

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

With your huge range Cho'gath isn't much of a threat at all. The only things to watch out for is his Q and W, but dodging them isn't hard at all. Otherwise he's shish kebab, just a really fat one.

1306.png recommended

VS

Corki

Medium

Corki is more often used as a midlaner now. He's very annoying with his big damage and poke early on and the entire game, and he can poke you with his R even outside of your soldier's range. I would say you're about on equal footing the entire game.

VS

Darius

Easy

Super easy match-up, he has nothing to show to Azir at all. His pull range is pathetic and he's basically a sack of gold for you. He's very easy to handle 1v1 in the laning phase(if Azir top)

This matchup is very difficult to bear but you can reduce his ult impact by timing your ult right and blowing him away. Afterwards 3157.png wrecks him.

My Azir Videos(Tricks/Gameplay) Back to Top

So you might have noticed how the guide doesn't go in-depth on mechanics. And this is very much intentional. I believe that mechanics are best observed and learned by either actually

playing or watching the gameplay videos - not by reading. Therefore the guide will remain a constantly updating build guide, changing as the Azir does. As for the actual gameplay and tricks, you should check Azir videos on youtube or play the actual game ;)

So, I encourage you to go and check out my videos!

Azir and Other Champions Back to Top

This is something I haven't seen covered much. Basically, here are the champions that benefit Azir or benefit from having him in their team greatly, as well as the reverse.

Friends

203.png - The trick is the synergy between their ultimates. Kindred's gives Azir a lot of time to DPS, while Azir denies
enemies the zone with his ultimate.

202.png - There is no trick, only many frustrated enemies who first get touched by Azir Q, then rooted by jhin before dying an unfair 1100 range death when Azir's Soldier mashes their face in while they're rooted.

201.png412.png111.png54.png14.png Although Azir has good protection tools by himself, he is still a hyper carry and a priority target. The brigade of tanks ensures your survival - and your survival ensures the doom of your foes.

Foes

238.png - The penultimate foe. He has many tools to screw your day. Stay away from the guy - the only way Azir likes his Zed's is in ban. If he somehow slipped through, then 3157.png is perhaps your best bet.

56.png can jump and delete you without much counterplay. As he jumps on your face squarely, you absolutely can't dash away - either he'll follow you through or you'll get a puny shield instead of a dash. To make matters worse, he also has a shield for your wall, so he's perfectly equipped to deal with you. 3157.png is also of use here, and try to Q him before R so he'll get knocked back(still, that's a mindgame, and if his reactions are quick, you're toast either way.)

38.png enjoys ripping apart mages, and you're no exception. Although his early game may by abysmal, his ult allows him to ignore the existence of your wall and dodge soldiers easily, all the while he bursts you down with damage. Even if you do manage to pin him down, he is still naturally very tanky versus magic damage.

245.png is another dude who honestly couldn't care too much about your ult. he has a blink to go over it if needed - he is very oppressive in lane - and he doesn't give a jack even if you flip him over right into your team, as he a get out of jail ultimate.

57.png this tree just casually ignores your ultimate and follows your EQ no matter what. Another very well equipped champion to deal with you - although, not as well equipped as those listed above, as you can at least knock him back after he arrives on top of you.

Janna

40.png She deserves a separate mention. She is nothing special to face as a foe - but when's she in your team, your abilities clash with each other way too much. Let me explain.
First of all, you're the carry - and she'll try to protect you with her shield from time to time. However, the AD it provides is absolutely wasted on you, and it's super inefficient.
Her Slow is very meh. You slow for 40% already permanently, so it's effects will be very limited even if it's maxed out and she has a lot of AP.
Your ultimates also clash. They both do the same thing - knock the enemies out. Having two of such effects in the same team means that one of you won't get to utilize his knockback properly more often than not.
And last - her tornado can interrupt your ultimate knockback. And it happens often enough to be a nuisance...
TL:DR Janna+Azir in the same team = not that good.

Azir's Lane Back to Top

Azir Lane:

1. Mid

2. Top(Lane-swapping is a thing)

3.Bot - ADC Replacement - avoid 267.png201.png40.png supports as 268.png doesn't work well with braumpassive.pngnamiE.pngeyeofthestorm.png

 4. Jungle is a thing with 1410.png + 2032.png1082.png1082.png but still not quite as decent as laning, at least in my opinion.

5. Support Azir doesn't get to farm, but it's still possible to utilize his kit for poking and focusing on the pick-off/protection aspect of his ultimate together with 3092.png to get very decent extra money from it.
