Summoner Spells Back to Top

Most supports take Ignite/Exhaust and Flash, Bard is no exception however keep in mind that you can win lane quite hard against melee supports and weak laners and ignite helps to convert that pressure into kills more easily or at the very least force your opponents out of lane more easily so you can roam to make use of bards roaming and grab some chimes along the way.

Masteries Back to Top

I think this is one of the best setups for bard, latest?cb=20151103094742 gives you a massive boost in your ability to trade and all in throughout the game, most of the masteries leading up to it as well as the 12 points in the resolve tree are quite standard, however there is 1 major change that could be made.

latest?cb=20131122000244 can be taken instead of latest?cb=20131122001059 if you feel that you will be able need the extra defensive bonus in the laning phase (for example in the harder matchups listed below) since map mobility is typically better for Bard but some matchups it is far too risky not to have Tough Skin.

the general skill order is R>Q>E>W

bardQ.png is your strongest ability, it is both your trading tool and your major form of crowd control so ALWAYS max it first.

bardW.png is a 1 point wonder, the movement speed boost on it does not scale with level; additionally the mana cost for setting them up is quite significant and heavily gates your ability to use your other skills so you should only put a point in at level 2 or 3 and then ignore it for most of the game.

bardE.png allows you to move around the map very easily and putting points into the ability has the added benefit of speeding up your travel speed for you and your allies when travelling through it; and of course the cooldown reduction on the ability as you rank it is always nice.

bardR.png Your ultimate is a massively powerful skill that makes or breaks a good bard player and learning in which ways you should use your ultimate in all situations will take time and practice. Some of the ways you can use your ultimate include: ulting enemies so your team can collapse on them, ulting your allies to save them from persistent damage/ damage over time effects, ulting the enemy carries in a fight while your team burns down the enemy front line; so make sure you think about which of the many ways is most useful ways to use your ultimate and make sure to put a point in it whenever you can.

Core Items

    Almost Always grab these
    Always Grab These

Situational Items

    Pick One
    Against Heavy AD
    For Pressuring Side Lanes
    Against Pick/ Magic Damage

The starting items for Bard are completely standard as they give him the best stats and gold earning potential. After your first back you should be looking to get an early 2049.png ASAP in order to ward whenever you move out of lane for chimes as well as ward in general to stay safe.

As the game moves on you should look to upgrade your sightstone (2045.png or 2301.png ) as well as grab a 3190.png when you can since both of these items are massively important for all supports in the current meta. After those key items and after grabbing 3117.png along the way you should be well into the later phases of the game (many games will end before you are even able to afford your next item).

If the game goes late enough for you to grab more items you want to try and choose between items that: can save your teammates like 3222.png, items that can max out your CDR like 3110.png and items that give you increased safety and bulkiness like 3143.png.

VS

Alistar

Easy

Alistar struggles to trade well in lane without putting himself in risk making him quite easy for bard to handle

VS

Braum

Easy

Braum has very few ways of getting onto your carry or you and requires a jungler to help him or he needs you to go overagressive making him very short range despite his Q. Another easy lane for bard to harass

VS

Karma

Medium

Karma has very comparable poke and utility to Bard so this lane can go either way, ensure that you dodge her empowered Q and you can easily win lane but that is often easier said than done.

VS

Leona

Hard

Especially with the recent Leona changes, Bard is put in a position while laning against Leona where he cant approach leona for fear of death. Leona has a ton of easy crowd control and decent burst allowing Leona lanes to potentially snowball and match Bard's aggression so be careful.

VS

Morgana

Hard

Morgana can deny a ton of Bard's damage through her black shield and her snare allows her to set up advantageous trades and even set up for all in fights with her ultimate that bard simply doesn't have the tools to deal with.

VS

Nami

Hard

Nami has a ton of sustain and kill pressure against squishy ranged supports and does much better than Bard in extended skirmishes making her a difficult opponent to face as Bard, so long as you dodge her bubble and ensure your trades are brief this lane is doable though quite risky.

VS

Sona

Hard

Sona has a lot of reliable healing and early poke which matches and exceeds Bard's, the only advantage Bard has over Sona is his ability to move his allies (and sometimes enemies) through terrain, Sona's ultimate is the nail in the coffin in this matchup and will typically cause a lot of engage potential for the Sona lane.

VS

Soraka

Medium

Most Soraka lanes are a stalemate because of her massive healing so you should look to tag Soraka with as much poke as possible since her source of healing is based on her own health. Bard can win this lane quite handily if Soraka lets him but it is ultimately up to your opponent to lose this lane for themselves.

VS

Tahm Kench

Easy

Similarly to most other melee supports Tahm Kench is unable to deal with the sheer range and damage that Bard possesses.

VS

Thresh

Hard

Thresh has the potential to chunk bard by landing his hook which bard struggles to come back from, expending mana on heal shrines basically makes you unable to trade reliably and gimps you in the laning phase, be very wary of all ins from thresh lanes.

VS

Zyra

Hard

Zyra is one of the few champions that can compete with Bard's poke, additionally her ult allows her to all in Bard during the laning phase and potentially snowball the game from there.

Early Game / Laning Phase Back to Top

In the laning phase Bard excels at strong trading and zoning while also having an easy way to help junglers gank his lane using his magical journey to carry them over otherwise impassable terrain. You should look to trade aggressively in most matchups (which will also help you gain gold from your spellthief’s and mastery). Keep in mind that attacking an enemy with a meep empowered auto attack followed up by a Cosmic Binding will activate your thunderlords allowing for heavy hitting trades without expending many resources, this can be repeated whenever your thunderlords is off cooldown to easily begin dominating lane phase.

Keep in mind that even in the hard matchups from the matchup section you can still be aggressive and win lane but you need to ensure that you take minimal risks since most of the champions that bard struggles with in lane are those that can abuse any favorable trades or catches that they get against bard. If you start to lose lane as bard it forces you to spend mana on your W in order to sustain which costs a massive amount of mana that you otherwise don't to be spending

Mid Game Back to Top

The mid game is where Bard it at his hardest to play effectively, you have to balance roaming for wards and chimes as well as grouping to help your team. Maintaining the balance between roaming around the map and fighting/trading in lanes is the key to playing bard successfully since your impact on the game dramatically increases as you collect meeps but collecting meeps prevents you from interacting with the lanes

The easiest way to know what you should be doing is based on how safely your ADC can farm on his own, the safer he is the more you can look to roam. If your ADC is not safe you should make sure you are within arms reach if he ever gets ganked; on the other hand if your ADC is extremely safe you don't want to roam too much otherwise your ADC will fall too far behind despite being safe.

Late Game Back to Top

In the late game bard’s biggest strength is that he can take champions out of teamfights and catch enemies from long range with his ultimate allowing for quick advantages through kills or burning key summoner spells before going for objectives that help end the game like Baron.

Something to always keep in mind is that the late game is not very forgiving so ensure you are keeping up as many wards as possible not just for yourself but for your team because a single champion being picked off from your team and cost you the game.
