Summoner Spells Back to Top

3.png--A must pick when facing at least 2 burst champions--1.png134.png107.png63.png55.png--Its not hard to predict when they are going to go all in, but don't exhaust too early or they'll wait for it wear off. Exhausting after they cycle through their abilities is pointless. If you forget to exhaust, don't panic and place it on a random.
--A must pick against multiple melee champs--11.png5.png157.png23.png48.png--these champions in particular are fast and rely on their auto attacks. Using exhaust help against both of these. Just wait until they are in melee range(bait them) and then exhaust them. If your adc is good or trusts you, they will have started auto attacking right as they got in range.

14.png-This isn't necessarily a 'must-pick' spell, but it helps against certain champions.
--Champions that heal--16.png50.png36.png
--Champions with a death delay or defense increase--12.png23.png26.png--when there ults are just about to wear off, ignite them.

When in doubt pick exhaust. It has more uses and you simply place it on the person attacking your adc or you.
When your comfortable with playing bard (you know when to go aggressive) pick ignite for the kill potential in your lane.

Masteries Back to Top

I will cover the more controversial masteries.

Cunning

Merciless or Meditation? - I personally like Merciless because no one likes to see a low enemy escape. Bard also has the chase potential. Meditation is nice, but mana is only a problem when your adc takes heavy damage and your forced to use shrines--which uses a lot of mana. But that's what your passive is for bardpassive.png. Each one you get gives you some mana back.

Greenfathers, Bandit, or Dangerous Game? - So many choices...Greenfather helps with your poke (auto attack + q combo). Which happens to have only a one second more CD than that of your passive. Time both of these for max damage. Bandit? Bandit enforces a laning style, which bard doesn't do. Your going to be missing some minions when you go off and do your thing. Dangerous game? Even if your a semi-tank, your health isnt worth that much extra. The extra mana is tempting, but during a fight your mainly using your q which doesn't take too much.

Precision or Intelligence? Both are viable. Precision might be the better choice, but the extra CD is more fun. At 45 % CD you can have two tunnels open, you can make them run in circles in the jungle.

Resolve

Unyielding or Recovery? Unyielding helps amplify the defensive runes, if you decide to change the rune page for more damage (removing armor and mr) than Recovery is the better choice.

Explorer, Siegemaster, or Tough-Skin? Explorer helps with roaming and warding. Want to get back to lane as soon as possible. Siegemaster? Not the play style you should have with bard. You will be stuck at the turrent every once in a while, but there is still the potential to leave the adc to farm under lane( make sure to leave shrines) and go roam. Tough Skin? Not a bad choice. Up to you.

Runic Armor or Veteran Scar? Your heals simply don't do much to warrant Runic Armor. Veteran Scar goes well with your defensive runes.

Insight -- Summoners op.

bardpassive.png--Your main damage source. At the start of the game, the first two chimes spawn at 0:35. Standing in the bush between 1st and 2nd turrent will increase the chances of them spawning in your jungle. At ~1:27 a third chime spawn. You'll have enough time to grab this first and leash your jungler if needed. With these chimes you'll be the first to level up to 2 first, take advantage of that. When backing and heading back to lane, pick a couple of these on your way. The movement speed will help make sure you get to lane in time. Also check to see mid lane for a potential gank. The meeps proc a second charge of spellthief, so wait until you get two charges and auto attack.

bardQ.png--Max this when you can with the exception to your ult. This is a valuable ability, and your opponent knows it. They will try to dodge this, so get in a couple of auto attacks in to fake them out and finish it off with a quick q to cancel your auto attack animation.

bardW.png--Once you reach level 2, lay one of these behind you and go in for a trade. Once the trade is done, the shrine would have already fully charged. A max of three can be placed! Even if you don't need it, place all three behind you and your adc, this is what helps you get away from ganks. Don't line up the shrines. This forces you or your adc to go that direction in order to benefit from the heal and movement speed. Instead place them in a triangle with space inbetween, the movement speed doesn't stack so there isn't any reason to have them so close together. Look at pic below:

      12.png      432.png                      bardW.png
                                  bardW.png
      67.png      17.png                       bardW.png

bardE.png--The tunnel. Most people see this as bard's escape--it is--but it also buys time for your other abilities. Unless your about to be bursted down, use a couple of auto attacks (use up your meeps) and your q before tunneling out. The larger the tunnel, the better. This is more for the late game when your q is on a 4 sec CD with the 45% CD reduction.

bardR.png--As described above, bard's ult has more potential than just saving allies or setting up wombos. It buys time. Use it as soon as you get out of the tunnel if they continue to chase you. When and where to use bard's ult is what separates the good bards from the bad bards. When to use it is always situational.

--Against assassins, they have one target in mind, the adc. Always check the adc's position. If they are next to a wall, get ready to land a q once the assassin jumps on them. No wall? Then ult your adc.

--Against hard engage?32.png54.pngYou cant stop them from ulting, but you can stop the rest of the team from engaging. If the engager goes in--and they land a +3 person ult--then ult as many as the enemy team you can. This way your team can recover and focus down the engager or disengage and regroup.

--Diving? Keep an eye on who your diving. If they hug the turrent, then don't try to risk hitting the turrent and the enemy. Once you finish them off, and the person tanking is about to die from a turrent shot, ult them, tank the turrent and let them walk out. If they are near, but not touching the turrent then hit the turrent and chase. If they completely run the opposite direction and your still diving, then hit them. This will let you catch up.

There are so many scenarios, which is why bard is such a fun champion. Your either hated or loved depending on how you play things.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Poke oriented. Health pots turn into biscuits.
Replace with Sweeping once you get sightstone.

Core Items

Try to keep sightstone and your support item separate. Frost Queen acts as a scout when you plan on warding the map. Don't want to be ambushed.

Situational Items

Viable Cooldown Reduction Items. Support item already gives 10%. Just need 30 more.
Doing Good? These are a couple of ap items I find myself buying. Mostly Ludens for the extra movement speed and procs with meeps.
My go-to armor item. Empowers first auto attack. Charges up fast because of your movement speed. And it makes you faster. Whats not to like?
Can't dodge a skillshot to save your life. Me too...Mostly against blitzcrank, you don't want to be 'that' guy who gets caught out
Couldn't fit in the CD category. No longer provides heal. Unless their cc is really obvious--Taric stun, TF stun--I wouldnt really bother

Not Recommended Items:

3050.png -- Goes against Bard's play style. Don't bind yourself, be free. Only take when your adc (or other carry) is the only way to win. You want to be by their side to peel, so you might as well get an item that'll wreck in the process.

3107.png -- Might be worth it now since it's op, but you can't really take advantage of one of the passives--more heal percentage. It does have nice stats, but I think there are better items to get.

VS

Alistar

Easy

Don't let him go all in. Especially with his recent changes. At level 1, you should be harassing him hard.

Also easy stacking your spellthiefs.

VS

Annie

Easy

Your range is slightly larger than Annie's. First 5 levels should easy.

Level 6 is when things get complicated. Always be weary and don't ever get close to your adc. She has to target someone, and it will most likely be your adc. In this case, ult the enemy adc and either focus down annie or retreat. Once the threat of her ult is down you can go back to what you were doing the early game.

VS

Ashe

Medium

What your suppose to do the early game is to poke and run. Ashe however has a very long range using her asheW.png. This zones you out and makes trading go more in her favor if your persist to get those spellthief charges.

Once she reaches level 6, you can counter her engage by ulting her.

Other than these annoying features, she's really immobile. Its hard for her to dodge your q.

VS

Blitzcrank

Hard

Can hook you when going into poke.

Never pick Bard into Blitz, and if you get countered pick this is the only time I would recommend going coin instead of spellthiefs.

VS

Brand

Hard

Poke hurts harder than yours. Luckily his spells are skill shot oriented. You can try to trade.

The extra movement speed should help you dodge some skills. If he targets adc instead, go in for autos if he uses abilities.

VS

Braum

Medium

Shield can block your q. This is annoying when your trying to get a two man stun, but get shield. Your mostly useless after using your q.

Still a tank. You can get spellthief charges easily.

VS

Caitlyn

Hard

Her long range makes it so you can't touch her. She'll just net you if you get close, and if shes good, she'll place a well placed trap. Make sure to have those shrines close behind, cause she is going to poke, a lot.

VS

Corki

Hard
Insane burst. Try poking when he uses one of his abilities, this will reduce the amount of burst he can do you.
His auto attack range is pretty short, so poking him is easier, but still dangerous.

VS

Draven

Medium

He has no mobility so its a lot easier to hit your stun. Its obvious where hes going since he has to catch his axes to do damage. Probably the only adc who can trade with you if he has axe. Do a quick burst and get out of there.

VS

Ezreal

Medium

Has a long range poke and a blink, but once he's caught he's not much of a threat. When trying to ult him, try placing your ult in the lower region of the circle. That way when he blinks there may be a chance of hitting the top part of it.

VS

Janna

Medium
Two types of jannas:

Passive: She will stay behind adc and shield when needed. Annoying since any damage you make will be countered. The lane is also very boring--should roam.

Aggressive: She will shield herself and auto attack you. You can potentially punish her by stun her against the wall and auto attack her down.

VS

Jhin

Medium
His 4th auto is dangerous if your low health. He can poke, but if you place a shrine as soon as they come out then there shouldn't be a problem. Has no gap closer, so stunning him is easy.

Ult him as soon as he starts ulting.

VS

Jinx

Easy

Easy to predict, no gap-closers or escapes, and squishy. The only problem you should have are her rockets. Especially the late game when they crit.

VS

Kalista

Medium

Easy to predict, but don't stay for long. The burst from the rend is really strong, which is hard to determine how much damage they do until your dead. Land your q when the jumping animation is about to stop.

VS

Karma

Hard

Poke is a lot harder than yours and she can shield a portion of your damage with her shield. One of the games where you can't roam of your adc could die, but you can't stay or you'll be poked down. You'll spend most of your mana healing, rather than poking.

VS

Kog'Maw

Easy

Very immobile, and a majority of his damage can be canceled out with exhaust. Land that q and your good.

VS

Leona

Medium
Poke down as much as possible at level 1, but be weary when their about to hit level 2. If leona jumps your adc, try and stun the enemy adc up against a minion. This will buy time for your adc to disengage or focus down leona.
At level 6 you want to do the same thing. Only add an ult to the mix to buy more time.

VS

Lucian

Medium
Very mobile and burst damage up close. When confronting, save your q and auto attack. Wait for him to use his dash and then q.

VS

Lulu

Hard

Shield, burst damage, and health ult. She blocks the majority of your damage, and her autos start hurting more than yours after a long fight.

VS

Miss Fortune

Medium

Getting hit by one of her q's is ridiculous. The lane is determined by how many of these don't hit. Even when that's on cooldown, she can slow you down with make it rain

VS

Morgana

Medium
Even though her shield blocks most of the damage, if the second part of your q hits a wall or enemy it can still stun. Use this to cancel out her shield and then ult her if she engages.

VS

Soraka

Easy

Boring lane most of the time. Try to make something happen during the laning phase, since her healing will become a huge asset to her team mid-to-late game.

VS

Thresh

Hard

Tanky and has potentially more cc than you. Try poking him, but stay away from going all in.

VS

Zyra

Hard

A lot of burst damage like brand. If your good, try to use her plants against her. Q her plant and let the second part stun her.
