Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png
You always want flash. Brand is very squishy even with the HP build in this guide, and while his stun is very strong it is often times unreliable.  In addition flash will allow you to reposition in late game teamfights where your positioning will make/break them.
14.png
Brand is a huge lane bully and has fantastic kill potential, so ignite is highly recommended to attempt to snowball your lane.

21.png
Against some burst champions you may want to consider barrier to allow you to survive their burst.

12.png
You may want to consider this if you coordinate well with another lane specifically one that is expected to take a lot of pressure from either the opposing laner or the jungle.  A brand countergank can win the game early especially in bot lane.

6.png
Ghost has become very valuable as a secondary as it has a relatively short cool-down in comparison to flash with the ability to cover more ground and with a bit of dodging will allow you escape similar situations.  I would only take this as a secondary and not as your primary mobility under any circumstances.

Masteries Back to Top

Deathfire Touch is a must.

Now that we have that out of the way, I like this set up the most as it gives you a mix of sustain through Feast and a very high amount of damage through Merciless.  You can consider dropping feast for expose weakness if you play with a jungler or like to roam a lot.

latest?cb=20160420084402 Passive: Blaze

Brand's abilities set his targets ablaze upon damaging them, dealing 2% of the target's maximum health over 4 seconds as magic damage and empowering his abilities against them. The damage is capped at 320 against monstersBlaze can stack up to three times, up to 6% of the target's maximum health over 4 seconds.

At 3 stacks, an area around the target is highlighted. After 2 seconds, all targets within the area take magic damage equal to 12% - 16% (based on level) (+ 1% per 66 AP) of their maximum health. The explosion will still trigger if the target dies to the third ability or during the delay.

Brand cannot stack Blaze on enemies who have exploded in the past 4 seconds.

Brand's passive has been completely changed in 6.9 the mage rework.  The damage on the passive dot is much less now, making brands poke with a one or two ability combo much less, however the burst is absolutely insane if you are able to hit a triple passive.  Since the passive now scales with AP void staff is no longer automatically better than deathcap so build according to your enemy.

Sear
RANGE: 1050
SPEED: 1550
COST: 50 MANA
COOLDOWN: 8 / 7.5 / 7 / 6.5 / 6
Sear

ACTIVE: Brand launches a fireball in the target direction that dealsmagic damage to the first enemy it hits.

  • MAGIC DAMAGE: 80 / 110 / 140 / 170 / 200 (+ 55% AP)

Blaze.png BLAZE: The target is also Stun icon stunned for 1.5 seconds.

I will give you fair warning, your skill-level with Brand is going to be determined by how well you can hit this skill. This is a straight line skillshot with decent range that stuns for 1.5 seconds if blaze was already on the target.  Hitting this ability is what will allow you to 100-0 champions with your combo.  It also becomes your main source of poke due to its very low cooldown and low static mana cost.  I max this ability second because the stun does not change with levels and W is far too powerful for laning and harassing.

Pillar of Flame
RANGE: 900 / 250
COST: 60 / 70 / 80 / 90 / 100 MANA
COOLDOWN: 10 / 9.5 / 9 / 8.5 / 8
Pillar of Flame

ACTIVE: After a 0.625-second delay, Brand makes the target area erupt in flame, dealing magic damage to enemies within.

  • MAGIC DAMAGE: 75 / 120 / 165 / 210 / 255 (+ 60% AP)

Blaze.png BLAZE: Pillar of Flame deals 25% additional damage.

Blaze.png BLAZE–ENHANCED MAGIC DAMAGE: 93.75 / 150 / 206.25 / 262.50 / 318.75 (+ 75% AP)

An aoe skillshot that has great range, a relatively short delay and insane damage especially if the target already has blaze on it.  This will be your main source of harassment in mid lane which is why you will be maxing this ability first in most scenarios.  You must remember that this ability has a high mana cost and relateively long cooldown at 10 seconds, so you must make sure you are not wasting it, becuase you will go out of mana very fast and every miss is costely.

Conflagration
RANGE: 625 / 300
COST: 70 / 75 / 80 / 85 / 90 MANA
COOLDOWN: 10 / 9 / 8 / 7 / 6
Conflagration

ACTIVE: Brand sets the target enemy aflame, dealing magic damage.

  • MAGIC DAMAGE: 70 / 90 / 110 / 130 / 150 (+ 35% AP)

Blaze.png BLAZE: Conflagration also spreads to enemies around the target.

This is a targeted ability with relatively low range especially when compared to Brands' other abilities.  It has relatively high mana cost but a huge 12 second cooldown at level 1.  This ability is very good for initiating an all-in, pushing waves, clearing wraith/wolf camps, and it can be used to easily harass melee champions.  Since the blaze bonus on this ability is really only for aoe, if there is any oppurtunity to cast this as your first spell and follow up with a stun for an easy W then you will be able to do one of the strongest 3 spell combos in the game.  If you can use this on a minion near an enemy champion then that is free damage + a blaze proc on your enemy.

Pyroclasm
RANGE: 750
COST: 100 MANA
COOLDOWN: 105 / 90 / 75
Pyroclasm

ACTIVE: Brand launches a fireball at the target enemy that bounces between nearby enemies up to four times, dealing magic damage each time.

  • MAGIC DAMAGE: 100 / 200 / 300 (+ 25% AP)
  • TOTAL SINGLE-TARGET DAMAGE: 300 / 600 / 900(+ 75% AP)

If Pyroclasm's current target becomes invalid, it selects a new enemy at no cost to its remaining bounces. If its initial target becomes invalid and there are no other valid targets, Pyroclasm refunds100 mana and resets its cooldown.

Blaze.png BLAZE: Pyroclasm briefly Slow icon slows enemies hit.

  • MOVEMENT SPEED SLOW: 30 / 45 / 60%

Pyroclasm is a targeted ultimate that will make or break teamfights. It is very crucial that it is not wasted as you will want to make the most of all five attacks of this ultimate!  This ability is what makes brand very scary to gank at times as he can put out a LOT of damage on grouped targets and has the ability to .  If you have blaze on the target if will slow champions and automatically prioritizes champions.  Try to aim for a squishy target, surrounded by enemy champions.. Also remember that it will bounce of neutral monsters and minions so you can potentially use this to get a triple bounce on a scuttle or dragon/baron for huge plays.

Typical Brand Build Order:

3340_64.png1056_64.png2003_64.pngx2

This is what you are going to want to start with every game.  It is the perfect combination of  sustain, survivability, ability power and mana regen.  Now remember since you are only starting with a warding totem that drops a ward that only lasts 60 seconds, the threat of a jungler gank is very real.  So play safe and use well timed agression to not get baited by the enemy mid laner into a jungle gank.  Note that dorans ring works when you hit your CS, the mana you will receive from the ring and the mastery Feast.

1056_64.png3136_64.png3020_64.png2044_64.png2043_64.png2003_64.png

On your first back you are going to first buy a second Doran's ring and slowly work up towards your early game core of Sorcerors Boots and Haunting Guise.  The double flat penetration will make Brand's enormous base damages do TRUE damage. It is also VERY important to buy wards and I have never played a game where I did not buy an early pink ward and regretted it.  It is a wonderful investment and I would highly recommend it to every mid-laner not just if you are playing Brand.  Since it lasts forever it has the potential to be game-changing.  Try and keep as much vision control over mid as possible.

Once you hit level 9, there is NO BETTER BUY in the game than a Greater Stealth Totem upgrade for your trinket. It makes your wards last 3 minutes and basically becomes a mini-sightstone.  Remember that vision is what wins games so buy this upgrade and more importantly get into the habit of using it!

3116_64.png

Rylai's Crystal Scepter basically turns off the "Hard Mode" aspect of Brand by allowing you to hit your combos extrememly easy.It gives you great chase, great kiting and as a bonus it has a whopping 400HP to make you much harder to kill while being very hard to chase.

3151_64.png

Liandries Torment is the ultimate upgrade for your haunting guise and since you already have a Rylai's Crystal Scepter the passive part of this item will now do double damage. This item was basically made for brand as his passive PROCs it on EVERY tick.  This is the ultimate two item combination on Brand so enjoy this large powerspike.

3157_64.png or 3135_64.png

Void Staff will be a LARGE damage increase at this point in the game, EVEN if the enemy team has not built MR this item will give you the largest damage increase per gold spent just from BASE MRs, and by getting this item early you are preparring for the eventual stacking of MR from the enemy team which is what a lot of people don't realize when they see how much MR the enemy team has.

However Zhonya's Hourglass is an  amazing combination of a defensive and offensive AP item and it is the only other ITEM I would even CONSIDER at this point.  If you are very fed and are feeling the heat from getting trained very hard by the enemy team   A well timed hourglass will not only keep you alive, but will bait the enemy team into a horrible position where the rest of your team can easily finish them off.

Whichever item you completed first, build the other one directly after as they are both extremly valuable items.

3089_64.pngor3165.png 2139_64.png

Rabadons Deathcap. Now you might be wondering why would this amazing item be only bought last or even not at all.  Well basically DEATHCAP is not the greatest item on brand because while his AP scalings are not the worst, the synergy Deathcap gives with Liandries or Brand's passive is non-existant.  However that does not make this item bad at all, Deathcap will make you ability to kill very squishy targets much more potent, if you are able to ult a backline you will wipe them out with a lot of bounces.  If you manage to get a triple bounce on a singe target then brands ult has an insane 1.5AP scaling ratio.

Now what happens if there is no way to get to the squishies, or if the team has a lot of re-positioning tools that do not allow you get get large ults off?  You must consider going Morellonomicon.  This item gives you a LOT of CDR and the ability to have Grievous Wounds on targets lower than 40% HP.  This gives you more spells to keep your tank shredding passives up on everyone and while your burst is not nearly as high, you will be getting more stuns off,h and have more total sustained damage.

Situational Items:

3028_64.png3174_64.png

If you are always runnning OOM, or if the enemy is always stealing your blue buff then you may need this item. Your burst will suffer so if you can avoid it I would not get this and just rely on smart mana consumption/mana regen runes/blue buffs.

3191_64.png
Against a lot of AD mids you will want a Seeker's Armguard over the early haunting guise.  It is a highly efficient item and unless I need to build hourglass right after it makes sense to just keep the armguard and build your core right after.  Against champions that all in it is worth it to finish off the Zhonya's Hourglass first.

1057_64.png3001_64.png

Some lanes cannot be won either to due being outplayed or being camped really hard.  Building an early Negatron Cloak and turning it into a first item Abyssal Scepter allows you to more easily survive the early laning phase and gives you a solid damage spike due to Abyssal's very powerful aura.  This item loses effectiveness late game however so if I need Magic Resistance much later in the game I always build:

3102_64.png

Banshees Veil is the best late game Magic Resistance item, it gives you a spellshield, a large amount of HP and Brand is one of the fortunate AP champions that does not need 5 Damage items to hard carry a teamfight in the late game.  Staying alive versus AP assassins is far more important and this item shuts them down very well.

Do not get these:

3070_64.png3003_64.png->3040_64.png

Tear into Archangel's Staff/Seraph's Embrace is not a viable build patch for Brand because not only does he not stack tear very well, his AP scalings are not as powerful as his magic penetration scaling.  The items power will not be realized during  Even with the 20 AP buff to this item in 5.13 it is still not worth it.

3027_64.png

Rod of Ages is a very poor item on Brand because you get a whopping 400 + 300 HP from Liandries + Rylais and the combo adds an insane about of damage to all your spells.  This item costs a large amount of gold, takes too long to get to its full power, and is really not worth it by any means as you get enough HP from your core.

3057_64.png3100_64.png

Sheen into Lichbane cannot work very well on Brand due to his very high cooldowns.  The burst is underwhelming as the ability power these items give is very low, you are much stronger building your standard core that makes you both tankier and allows you to do more damage.

3152_64.png

Will of the Ancients falls short of the other items for Brand, the stats on the item is poor and now that it is no longer an Aura there is no discernable scenario where this item would be a better buy than your standard core.

VS

Ahri

Medium
This is a skill lane, you must avoid her Charm and land your stun. Pre 6 you do more damage then her, play aggressive but watch out for baits. Post 6 you still do more damage, but she has the ability to easily escape/follow up ganks with her ult and you do not, so be sure to ward.

VS

Akali

Medium

You must play very aggressively pre-6 you have decent kill potential and must punish her for every CS. Post 6 you must be very careful as a missed stun will potentially be your death. Keep a pink on you to finish her off and make her shroud useless.

VS

Anivia

Medium

This is a kill lane, you must avoid her Q's, and when she misses one retaliate and play very aggressive. Post 6 she will most likely just farm and make the lane very hard to snowball. You must keep track of her egg cooldown before going all in, do not waste a summoner for the egg cooldown unless you are confident you can kill the egg after.

VS

Annie

Medium
You outrange her hard, so try and pillar her as much as possible, then go for the combo. You must be careful when she has her pyromania up as she will trade with you potentially without retaliation. At level 6 she has the ability to flash and do 70-80% of your health so be warned and try and grab a ruby crystal/null magic before this point so you dont die. Your ult can bounce between her and tibbers so use that to your advantage. Build Merc Threads to make her stun a little easier to deal with.

VS

Azir

Hard

A very good azir has the ability to poke you our of range of your pillar. Ask for ganks and hope that your jungler understands how Azir's escape works. it is very possible to use flash to put yourself in a position to land a stun and easily kill the Azir in one combo, but this matchup can be cancerous.

VS

Brand

Hard

May the best man win.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

This is a skill lane. She wins in extended trades but you win in short trades so lane your abilities but don't let her use twin fangs on you constantly when you have cool downs. Dodging her Q consistently will allow you to retaliate and punish her hard. Landing your full combo should be able to kill her easily before she can retaliate as your all-in is far more bursty than hers.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

You must dodge his Q's otherwise you will lose this matchup hard, get boots if you have to. Stay out of range of his Feral Scream, but keep playing aggressive. His sustain is very high, but you can kill him before he gets HP/MR easily if you land your combos and punish him for early CS. Ask your jungler for a gank before he ramps his feasts stack up and becomes an unkillable sustaining beast. In the late game you will do a large amount of damage to him anyways due to the HP shredding nature of Brand. Build merc treads to counter his lengthy silence.

VS

Corki

Medium

Corki does not have the highest attack range so force him to CS with abilities and punish him for csing with autos by landing combos. Post six he will have very high poke damage, but if he ever comes too close to you, make sure you punish him. Valkyrie has a very long range, but also a very large cooldown and mana cost, dont chase too hard after forcing a Valkyrie.

VS

Diana

Medium

Pre-6 Diana is one of the weakest champions in the game, play very aggressive and force her to CS with Q's all while pushing the lane and try to freeze the lane at your tower. She is one of the easiest champions to gank so a well frozen lane will allow you to easily set up a kill for your jungler. Post-6 Diana is another story, she has amazing ability to burst while being very tanky, I take barrier in this matchup as it allows me to survive her all in. Dodge her Q's post 6 and hit your stuns, you can easily 1v1 her if you do this.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Pre-6 Ekko is weak and you should play very agressively, be careful for his Q's if he ever hits both sides he will be able to proc his passive for a decent amount of damage, however if you retaliate with hitting all your spells you will win the trade hard. Post-6 Ekko can be very scary because he can negate your ult and bait you hard, you must note where his clone is at all times and be careful not to chase him, he has the ability to easily turn around a won fight especially if you try to ult and ekko with ult. DO NOT ULT EKKO UNTIL HE ULTS. Merc treads are amazing for his stun.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

- You outrange, outburst, and outpush her.  This lane is a very easy 1v1 lane.

- The major problem is making sure your side lanes are safe, so pink your lane, and PING your side lanes the moment she goes missing.
- TP would not be a bad choice to counter her ganks.
- Keep your lane pushed and take her tower to punish her roaming.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

Early game Ezreal is very weak until he gets a lot of items, play very aggressively and with smart spell usage you may net yourself a kill. A good ezreal with dodge every stun when his arcane shift is up so do not get baited by that. if you can force him to use shift on something that isn't your stun you should easily be able to kill him by hitting a stun. Be careful of his level 6 burst if he lands a perfect ult on you. Consider a Banshee's for late game as late game AP ezreal is no joke.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

ake cleanse for his fear if you know you are versus a fiddle mid. Play aggressive early and save your stun for his drain. Asumme that he is going to flash on you with ult at 6, but that is the only way he can kill you which is why cleanse is a godsend. Get merc treads for the fear, silence and magic resistance, and a potential Banshees veil for the late game.

VS

Fizz

Easy

No this isn't mislabelled novices will find it impossible, veterans will find that Brand actually hard counters Fizz. First off take Barrier to survive his all in potential and I also take hybrid penetration runes as there is a lot of auto attacking in this matchup. You will be maxing E in this matchup and using it to constantly poke fizz as W is dodge able. If fizz dashes to you after you cast your E on him do not cast your stun until he uses his playful/trickster. Once his playful/trickster is down he has no ability to dodge your stun so go ahead and land it into an undodgeable pillar. If done correctly you will win the trade hard especially if you are able to land multiple auto attacks in between spells. Level 6 changes things as he gets a large power spike, dodging this fish is very hard at times because good fizz players will only use it after they go on top of you. Just remember to use barrier in this scenario as the fish is about to POP and to never attempt land a stun(or your pillar/ult) until his playful/trickster is used. Consider building rushing abyssal if you are having trouble, grouping mid is also a great way to counter fizz as his waveclear is not reliable.

VS

Galio

Medium

This matchup is very difficult because your passive actually hurts you here as his shield heals him through it and then some. He also stacks magic resistance that increases his damage output. My advice is to dodge his Qs and retaliate with your spells, you can eventually wither him down and even kill him very early with ignite. You may want to consider an earlier void staff right after Liandries if he becomes a problem. His ult can easily lock you down for a gank or even a 1v1 ALL IN so be very careful of it, get Merc treads for his ultimate.

VS

Gragas

Medium

- Play aggressive pre-6, try and stay out of body slam range though.

- He has very strong burst at level 6 so grab some health/MR before that point to survive it, or just stay in farm range.
- He has great roaming/pushing potential so try and keep him under control.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

Don't stand near his turrets and keep him zoned as much as possible with your skills. Your ult can bounce of his turrets so use that to your advantage. Buy mana potions and ask for blue buffs to keep your mana high you have amazing kill potential in this lane.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

Try and hit him with pillars, watch out for his E-Q combo it does a large amount of damage. Get Seeker's Armguard to survive his level 6 burst. Hitting or missing your stun is what will make the difference in this lane and dont get baited by Hexdrinker.

VS

Jayce

Easy

You must be very careful of his gate + shock blast poke, either stand behind minions or juke the blast. His long range poke is his only pressure on you, you have every other advantage in this lane. If he goes ever is foolish enough to into melee range to combo you, retaliate hard and kill him. Consider building a Seeker's Armguard if you require the armor.

VS

Karthus

Easy

Play very aggressive, try and land pillars on him to poke him out of lane, in general Karthus players tend to be very safe players. If possible try to land combos to kill him. DO not get baited by exhaust + his ult, karthus has great potential to kill you after he dies due to his passive. You can interrupt his ult with your stun so if he is every foolish enough to channel it in front of you make sure to do so.

VS

Kassadin

Medium

As a melee champion, you will be able to punish Kassadin hard PRE-6. His Q gives him a shield however so do not take bad trades. You have great kill potential if you consistently land combos. POST-6 Kassadin gains mobility, however after his nerfs his damage is not that scary, so just be worried about gank. You must also ward for the potential ROAM, you do not want Kass snowballing the other lanes and eventually becoming very strong for lategame

VS

Katarina

Easy

This lane is incredibly easy no idea why people think its hard. You must Max E and spam her with it, it outranges her W and she cant dodge it. If she jumps to you(remember that it always jumps behind you) then stun her, pillar her and give her 4-5 auto attacks through this. POST-6 make sure you save your stun for her ultimate and if you are fast enough it will only get 1 tick off. Be careful for jungle ganks while doing this aggressive playstyle. Ward for her roams and ping more than extra, she has the ability to snowball other lanes very easily.

VS

Kayle

Medium

When she activates her righteous fury, attempt to combo her and watch the duration. You have roughly 6 seconds(less once she gets CDR) when its down to do free damage to her. You can stun her through her ulti make sure to save your ult for after her's is down, do not get baited by it. This lane comes down to if you can stun her while she is attempting to auto attack you with her righteous fury up, and if you are able to work around her ultimate with your cooldowns.

VS

Kennen

Medium

You must stay behind minions and attempt to land pillars while dodging his q's. He moves extremely fast in his e, so try and be very patient with your skillshots, missing them can prove troubling. Be very careful of his ridiculous burst at level 6 with flash and his ultimate, I would reccomned getting merc treads directly after guise to help with the damage/cc.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

- Keep him zoned and attempt to hit skillshots when he goes for CS.

- Save your stun for when he jumps to you to retaliate his huge burst.
- Don't get juked with his ult at 6, be very patient with your skillshots.

VS

LeBlanc

Easy
Leblanc is very hard for novice players, however it is incredibly easy for people experienced with the matchup. Make sure to get Barrier. Start W and see what Leblanc started by trying to hit a W on her. If she dodges it with her dash then avoid casting pillar on her until she wastes her dash. Walk up to her at level 3 and E her. When she retaliates with her Q-W-E you can stun her mid dash and pillar her for a trade that will go widely in your favor provided you hit every ability. In general this is how you plant to play versus leblanc, hyper-aggressively as you will destroy her this way especially if you are able to stun her mid-dash. If she uses her dash and your ult has the damage necessary to proc her passive you can cast your ultand it will bounce of her passive and most likely kill her for an easy kill. Save barrier in scenarios where she might be able to kill you in one combo and consider a late game Banshee's Veil to shut her down completely. Ward for her roams, and expect to get ganked a lot when playing this aggressively. Remember warding wins games!

VS

Lissandra

Easy
This is a very easy lane, you outrange her, do far more damage, and you can outpush her as well. You must keep her zoned from CS and punish her for any she gets. If you stun her while she uses her escape, then she can no longer escape. The only way to lose this lane is if you get camped by the jungler, she has incredible CC especially POST-6 so ward carefully but still play aggressive. Consider taking cleanse for her ultimate, but ignite is fantastic too as you have great kill pressure. Do not waste your ultimate before hers as she can negate it by ulting herself.

VS

Lulu

Easy

Her shields are very strong, however your damage is better. Do not get into auto attack trades with her as PIX does a lot of damage. Consider merc treads to reduce the duration of her W and make sure you do not get baited by her ultimate.

VS

Lux

Medium

A good lux will stay far back and just poke and farm with her E. If she even attempts to walk closer make sure to punish her. She has decent burst at 6 and better range than you so be very confident with dodging her snare. A late game banshees veil is good if she gets out of control.

VS

Malzahar

Medium

Do not stand next to dying creeps with his dot on them as it bounces after the minion dies. He will probably just shove the lane hard and stand far away, ask for jungler ganks or attempt to land max range combos. Attempt to dodge the silence as efficiently as you can. You must watch out for his 100-0 combination at 6, it is possible if you are good with timing that you can cast the q before his ult lands on you to stun him out of it. Build merc treads for his silence and if absolutely necessary you can build a QSS to negate his ultimate.

VS

Master Yi

Easy
Try and not stand next to creeps to take free Alpha strike damage. You must aim and time your skillshots to hit him as soon as he comes out of alpha strike. Save your stun for his meditation. Since meditate has a massive 35 second cooldown, punish him hard for it being off cooldown, this should be a nightmare lane for Master Yi.

VS

Morgana

Medium

You can play aggressively but you MUST dodge her snare while doing so. She has spell vamp and pushes the lane hard so be careful of minion aggro while playing aggressive. Save your stun for when the shield is on CD or you have broken though it, make sure the blaze is still active. Her level 6 is quite scary, be careful not to get snared and get all-inned. In some scenarios you will need to ult her to remove the black shield and stun her to survive the all in.

VS

Nidalee

Medium
Put on your dancing shoes, there is no reason to ever get hit by a spear. If for some reason you do, be prepared to stun her mid pounce otherwise you will take a large amount of damage. Be careful of her traps as that will allow her to pounce as well. If you are having trouble dodging spears rush tier 2 boots first into a standard build.

VS

Orianna

Easy

You should play aggressive, your pillar and stun outrange her Q and you will out trade her even with her E. Do not walk up to E her unless she is stunned or you are preparing for an all-in, she will kite you. Do not trade autos with her as hers do extra damage that stack up.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

You have a large range advantage in this lane, Use it to deny pantheon early however you must be careful not walk to close to pantheon early, his damage is insanely high early. With proper zoning and kiting you should be able to crush this mid easily, if you need some help with his very high damage I would recommend grabbing a Seeker's Armguard. Make sure to let your team know when he is level 6 and to ping lanes back to safety so he does not snowball the game.

VS

Ryze

Easy

You must abuse his low range and weak early game and play aggressive he is very killable. Do not underestimate his burst once he gets tear + catalyst. Stunning him while his ultimate is up will reduce his ability to get health back from his spellvamp and will shut him down from chasing you.

VS

Swain

Easy

You outdamage and outrange him so play aggressive, he should be getting zoned. His snare has a large delay so you should be able to dodge it unless slowed by his Q. Once he hits 6 he has sustain, however if you land all your abilities you can easily kill him with ignite and your ultimate. You should considering getting Morellonomicon at some point to reduce his healing in the late game.

VS

Syndra

Medium

This is a complete skill lane. You must dodge as many Q's as possible while hitting your pillar, her Q is on a much shorter cd, but yours does more damage especially at early levels after her nerf. Play safe while your abilities are on cooldown go for short bursty trades and either all in or back off. Don't stand in a position where a ball can hit you when she uses scatter the weak to avoid her stun. She has considerable burst at 6, but so do you so good luck as it will all come down to who can land their combo more effectively and who is better at dodging skillshots.

VS

Talon

Medium

Play aggressive early, If he jumps on you pre 6 hit him with your full combo to win a trade hard. Before he hits level 6 try and back to get some armor to survive it, maybe even finish the entire Seeker's Armguard. You should now be able to survive his full combo with ult and once that is down he no longer becomes scary so play aggressive. You may consider getting a pink ward to counter his ability to all-in you. Finish off a Zhonya's Hourglass to make this champion very useless against you.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

This is a very easy 1v1 lane, play aggressive but be VERY careful of jungler ganks, Junglers love to gank for TF because of his very easy stun and the fact that they know you will want to play aggressive. You outtrade and outrange him, make sure you dodge all of his wild cards as that should be his only retaliation. You should ward both sides of your lane and keep track of his Ultimate cooldown(180 seconds at rank 1/150 seconds at rank 2), because TF will snowball a game if he is free to ult wherever with no warnings. Consider getting merc treads as his stun is very powerful in the late game at 2 seconds on a short cooldown.

VS

Veigar

Medium

You should play aggressive early, he will most likely be using the majority of his Q's to farm creeps. Make sure to dodge his W and the new delay on his Stun allows you to dodge it as well. You should be able to apply ridiculous pressure on veigar while he is weak. Get a banshees veil and merc treads at some point before lategame to stop him from oneshotting you, because any game that gets to late will have a Veigar that can kill you with two spells. Learn the range of his stun circle, you being able to dodge his stun will determine whether you live or die in most scenarios.

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium

It is very hard to outpush a velkoz because his W can be spammed, however you may be able to poke him out. Understand the angles and how to dodge the Velkoz Q, it takes a bit of practice and it is actually quite tough against good Vel'Koz players. You can all in Vel'koz but be careful for his all'in, his ult deals a Monstrous amount of damage early so there is no getting out.

VS

Viktor

Medium

This is a skill matchup, you want to dodge his laser and avoid doing auto attack trades while hitting your combo at max range. Be careful for his field as it stuns if you get caught in it. His chaos storm does an absolutely unreal amount of damage if you eat the entire duration so you must be very careful, it moves at a speed that is directly proportional to how close it is to Viktor.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

Play aggressive early, punish him for every CS, you will out damage his sustain easily, you will find however that your mana will suffer so make sure you are last hitting well to keep your Doran's Ring at its maximum efficacy. You should be patient with your skillshots, try and force his pool then land a full combo with ultimate and finish him off. Do not ultimate him until his pool is off cooldown, your passive still burns him while he is pooling

VS

Xerath

Hard

His range is very hard to deal with, dodge his Q's as best as you can and attempt to retaliate. His W will make it very hard to walk up and hit a stun. A good Xerath will win this matchup 9 times out of 10, I would advise you to ask your jungler for help as xerath as no escapes and is very easy to all-in or even dive.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Auto attack his passive to proc it, after the shield runs out go for e to poke and damage him. I reccmoned maxing E as he can juke your W easily with his dashes. Since his Windwall negates your Q and R so be VERY VERY careful casting these until it is on cooldwon. If you can consistently hit Qs and poke him with your E this matchup becomes extremely easy and he will not be able to farm. Consider going for a Seeker's Armguard if you need armor.

VS

Zed

Medium

You must dodge his shurikens and watch his shadow, he will use it to dodge your skillshots and play very aggressively. If you notice him using his shadow aggressively on cool down, tell your jungler as that is his only escape. You want to back and grab Seeker's armguard at level 6 because his burst can be very terrifying without it. Once he hits 6 make sure not to waste your stun as you need to instantly stun him out of his ult to take almost no damage from Death Mark. Grab an early zhonyas and he will never bother you again with his ultimate unless he wants to lose.

VS

Ziggs

Medium
his is a skill matchup with a slight edge to Brand if you are good at dodging. You should practice dodging his bombs, they have insane range with the double bounce and he can zone you easily if he can consistently hit them, however after the latest nerfs they are fairly easy to avoid. If he uses his satchel charge to harass, let your jungle know for super simple ganks. Take note of his passive, it makes it very unwise to trade auto attacks with him. Since he has very low cooldown skills, short combo trades will work in your favor and can potentially kill him. Warn your team about his almost global ult when they initiate a side-lane fight as it can change the scope of a bloody 1v1/2v2/3v3.

VS

Zilean

Medium

- He has considerable burst starting at level 3, so be very careful.

- His speed-up makes it quite difficult to hit him with skill shots.
- You outscale him in big team fights so try and play safe and win the mid-late game.

VS

Zyra

Medium

This is a skill matchup. Take not that her plants do almost as much damage as her skills, so pay attention to them and always keep that damage in mind when trading. The key to winning this lane is to dodge her entangling roots as much as possible while consistently hitting your pillars and stuns. Both players have incredible burst at level 6 so this lane comes down to who can outplay the other by hitting their combos more effectively. Be careful of her passive, since the lane is very bloody at times it can net a lot of kills if you allow it to hit you.

(If this guide has helped you in any way please consider following to help me out :) and maybe watching the stream live)

Hi I'm EvilCatStorM,

I have been playing League of Legends since April 2012 and it has been my favourite addiction ever since.  I went from barely making Gold in S2(1500 ELO) to Diamond IV in Season 3.  I hit Diamond 1 in Season 4 with relative ease and am on my way after a short break to hitting it again in Season 5.  I credit the majority of my climbing to Brand as he was my main champion throughout.  I absolutely love everything about his kit, his abilities, playstyle, and ability to carry solo queue with not too much effort.

I've played over 1500 ranked games with Brand and consider myself to be quite proficient in his nuances/matchups/playstyle.  I have tried almost every build/mastery/rune set up on brand and have come to believe that the set up I have is the strongest and borderline overpowered when built in the right order.  The problem with Brand is that he has never had a clear build path for most people and when built and played incorrectly his power is not near what he has the potential to do.

In this guide I will show you how to play Brand and carry yourself all the way up to Challenger if you put the time into practicing him the right way and learning with every game you win or lose.  I will show you things that only masters of Brand learn after hundreds of games playing the champion at a very high level.  Things like detailing every matchup, choosing the right builds for the right situations and how to deal with camping are thoroughly explained in this guide.  Not only will you learn how to climb with him, but he is by far the most fun champion I have played in this game when played correctly and his carry potential is limitless!

- Requires knowledge of combos and will take practice
- HIGH Mana costs

Early Game Back to Top

So I got all my masteries and runes set-up, bought my starting items and head to lane, what do I do on this champion?

Brand has a very strong early game against most champions.  You want to abuse pillar of flame as much as possible.  Try to use it as they go for last hits as that is when most players are going to move in an obvious manner. Once you hit a pillar, see if there is a possible opening to hit a Q directly after for a stun, dont force it though, as you may walk into skillshots trying to get that stun off when you could have just got a free W for taking no damage in return.
If you are able to land a couple pillars in a row and are able to land a stun feel free to go up for an ignite e and auto them for a first blood on the next pillar you hit, people are often shocked by Brand's very powerful early game damage and because of ignite and his passive you may be able to kill them even after they flash.  Make sure to ward accordingly as brand is a very known target for a lot of early jungler ganks.  Saving some abilities to get the jungler off of you in a gank is not a bad idea brand can easily avoid ganks if his abilities are off cooldown.

Last hitting is very important here, you do not want to spend your entire time harassing and realize you are down 15 CS, not to mention perfect last hitting will you you more mana through Feast and any Doran's Rings you have.

Mid Game Back to Top

So you got your early Magic pen items, a blue buff, 2-3 wards to place around, what now?

Look for roaming possibilities and try and control objectives such as dragon and towers. Push your wave and attempt to roam to get kills to allow you to capture these objectives.  You are brand, you do a ton of AOE damage, a teamfight at this point in the game would work well in your favor so try and force one without getting caught.

Remember also that brand's passive with or without liandry's will allow you to shred dragon so look for opportunities to do it, whether its the jungler being top, mid or bot backing, or maybe mid/bot took their tower and pushed up the lane, try and control that objective to help snowball the game.

Late Game Back to Top

I managed to farm up my core items and well up on my way to the others, everyone in the game is very strong, what am I supposed to do in the big game-deciding team fights?

Your poke with Q and W is among the strongest poke in the game especially with brand's passive and liandries, try and siege towers if you feel your team has better poke with you around.  Sometimes you can poke people so low that your ult fill finish someone off before the big fight even starts!  This is what makes brand incredibly powerful lategame as you can win a fight before it even starts.

I wasn't able to poke someone to death and now a huge teamfight just broke out, what do I do now?

Let's answer these questions:
  1. How strong am I in comparison to everyone else?
  2. Is our AD stronger then their AD?
  3. Who is a major threat on their team?
If I'm the stronger person on the team then I will be VERY careful choosing my targets. Expect to be focused and save your Q stun for scary people to peel them off you.  Ult the highest priority clumped targets but DONT PUT YOURSELF IN DANGER to do it.  You don't need to ult right away and you certainly don't need to suicide to get a perfect ult.  Brand has pretty phenomenal sustained damage so there is nothing wrong with showing patience with your big burst skills to use to finish off the scary carrys when you can get to them through their front line.

If your AD is much stronger then their AD then I like to just peel for my AD.  With liandries and rylai's complete you have very good dot damage and slows that will help your AD melt their front-line and keep him auto attacking more, with less kiting required.

If they have a major assassin threat on their team or even a very fed bruiser or assasin like an akali/diana/jax/riven/irelia then DON't WASTE your major skills until they show their face.  Your positioning is EVERYTHING, you aren't just an ult and then die champion, stay alive for as long as possible and remember that you can hang back until your skills are off cooldown to take some of the pressure of you.

Some Notes:
  1. Ulting to secure a kill where you know it won't bounce is sometimes better than ulting to bounce over the whole team.
  2. Don't simply use zhonya's to keep yourself alive when you are about to die.  You can use zhonya's to dodge ults and fatal skillshots even when you are at 100% health.
  3. Try and keep your passive on as many people as possible, its sustained damage is incredibly powerful and it procs liandries for even more sustained damage.

Combos Back to Top

Combo 1 (Lane poke):

 w.png W -> q.png Q -> e.png E

Range: Highest

AOE Damage: High

Single Target Damage: Lowest

CC: 2 Second stun

This combo will be your main source of damage in laning phase.  Very few mids can take this combo and retaliate with damage that is even a little similar.  You use this combo in lane because W can be cast through minions and it has very solid range, + the stun will allow you to gap close for an e.  Try and stagger the skills IF possible because that will give you more damage as the passive will tick for longer.

Combo 2(Single target committal):

 e.png E-> q.png Q -> w.png W

Range: Lowest

AOE Damage: Lowest

Single Target Damage: Highest

CC: 2 Second stun

Whenever possible, you will be doing this combo to do as much single target damage + cc.  The major problem with this combo and why it isnt used as much in lane is it requires you to get close enough to cast an e on them which leaves you potentially to be hit by skillshots, so you really only use this if you want to commit to a fight and are looking to possibly outplay.

Combo 3(I just ulted you, now you all die):

q.png Q -> e.png E->  w.png W

Range: High

AOE Damage: Highest

Single Target Damage: Highest

CC: NONE or Stun if blaze is on from ult

This combo give you the highest possible single target and AOE damage and will absolutely blow up clumped targets.  This combo is also usefull for taking jungler camps, Q the big minion, E to spread it to the others and then W the entire camp for very fast clears.

I got Rylais:

Once you get rylais hitting all these combos become so easy that you may want to consider staggering your spells do the the most bang for your buck with liandries and Blaze, just remember to keep track of blaze and dont stagger to the point that you miss skillshots.

Support Back to Top

What the !@#$?!  Brand support?  Im dodging....

Yes!  With the season 4 changes to supports this is not only viable, it is incredibly powerful!  Brands kit does a lot of damage with only a few items and he brings some very powerful CC!  Hear me out...

Pros:

  • VERY Snowbally lane potential
  • 900 Range Qs for poke that does insane damage
  • 2 Second stuns for easy peel from assassins with very low CD!
  • You do more damage than your ad at potentially all stages at the game!
  • Can defend towers by himself with insane wave clear
  • Does the most damage out of any support to Dragon/Baron
  • PEOPLE THINK YOU ARE TROLLING!(Pssh Brand support we are gonna rape him)
  • Incredibly fun!

Cons:

  • Very reliant on skillshots
  • No relaible escape and disengage from ganks.
  • If you miss a lot of skillshots you can quickly lose trades and lose lane because of it.
  • Peel is really for the most part single target, you can not save your ad from multiple assassins diving on him.

Runes

Quints: AP
Red: Hybrid Pen
Yellow: Armor
Blues: Flat or Scaling MR

Skill Order

R>Q>W>E

- Q costs the same mana and is your main source of harass as support, not to mention lower CDs on a two second stun improves your peel tremendously.
- W will be a much more reliable way of hitting both the AD and the support.

Build Order

Spellthiefs->Frostfang->Sightstone
Boots->Haunting Guise->T2 Boots(mobi or sorc)
Liandries->Void/Rylais
Frost Queens -> Ruby sighstone
Some games I like to sell Frost Queens and get banshees.
