Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png Flash is quintessence on nigh every champion, save for a select few. As such, you want to have this summoner spell every time of Caitlyn. Cait is a squishy and fairly immobile (with the exception of her E) ADC, who cannot go without this key summoner.

7.png Heal is your secondary summoner spell. It is almost as significant as flash, as it can be used to save both yours and/or your support's lives. In addition, it can be useful in chasing down an enemy, with the minor speed boost it provides.

1.png Cleanse is an alternative to heal. I find it particularly useful when against a heavy cc team, consisting of champions with multiple forms of cc such as, 111.png113.png72.png, etc. However, it does sacrifice some security in lane, and will force both you and your support to play much safer than you would otherwise with heal.

21.png Barrier is another alternative to heal. It is not as recommended as other defensive summoners as it does not provide the speed boost, or the defense for allies that Heal does.

3.png Exhaust is a third alternative to heal. I rarely ever take this summoner, but it is useful against a heavy assassin team. If used, make sure to have a healing support, or a support that is willing to take Heal for you. Otherwise, laning phase will be quite difficult.

Masteries Back to Top

In terms of masteries, the most optimal route is 18-12-0, as this route gives you significant sustained damage per second, as well as provides you with ways to sustain your health and mana through kills and attacking.

In the ferocity tree, you want to start with 5 points in Fury. As Caitlyn deals most of her damage through her auto attacks, not her abilities, it is an obvious choice to increase her attack speed over the ability damage Sorcery provides.

In the second tier, you want to get Feast, as it provides a significant amount of sustain in the early game, and is the best option of the three. Double Edged Sword can be fine in some situations, and be used as an alternative, but it makes you squishier, and lowers your sustain drastically. Expose Weakness is never really an optimal choice for the marksmen role, as it is primarily for more supportive roles.

In tier 3, you want to put 5 points in Vampirism. The 10 AD and 15 AP that you get at level 18 with Natural Talent is pretty abysmal when compared to the sustain that Vampirism provides.

For tier 4, you want to get Oppressor, as Bounty Hunter requires you to get at least three kills to be more effective, and as the marksmen, you will be in bot lane for a majority of the time, with little access to unique kills. In addition, Oppressor is more optimal because it is applied to both Caitlyn’s yomuSSRH9d6oKPNdIpiSmFyd0P8j-Gnxl-M96YfA andbR65sYsYf__Tm2sw5qN50jGMy4mcjuVLUdxXTpWa, allowing easily accessible extra damage.

For tier 5, you want to select Battering Blows. This is another obvious choice, as Caitlyn is an AD marksmen, that does little magic damage, and as a result, needs no magic penetration.

Finally, for the keystone mastery, you want to select Fervor of Battle. After the recent nerf to Warlord’s (as of this patch), Fervor is the most optimal keystone. This keystone allows you to maximize your dps, and allows you to make more favorable trades. The other keystones, however, can somewhat be viable as well, but have their limitations.

Warlord’s, after it’s nerfs, is less effective for ranged champions when attacking minions. It can still be useful for sustaining, but offers less damage. As for Deathfire Touch, Caitlyn’s main damage comes from auto attacks, not abilities. As such, DFT is less effective on her, but can still be useful for finishing off a target barely living after an caitlynaceinthehole.png.

Now for the tier 1 in the Cunning tree, you want to get 5 points in Savagery. This mastery aids in csing, and is fairly significant very early. Wanderer is an alright substitute, but gives you no benefit in combat, and little benefit in lane.

For tier 2, you want to get Secret Stash, as it allows you to sustain more in lane. Runic Affinity can be supplemented instead, but as you most likely won’t be getting any buffs early, it won’t benefit you much. As for Assassin, you don’t want this mastery because you want to be with your team 24/7, and will lose the damage it provides.

For tier 3, you want Merciless. This talent gives you a significant amount of damage to low health targets, and can mean the difference between a kill or not with your ult. Meditation can be a substitute, but only if you find yourself spending too much mana, or simply want to be spamming your abilities more.

For tier 4, you will want Dangerous Game. This mastery is the difference between life or death in many situations, and you will need it more often than not. I find Dangerous Game to be much more important than the extra gold income Bandit provides.

Generally, you want to point one point in  caitlynpiltoverpeacemaker.png first, as it helps level 1 trades the most. In addition, it can be used to show a minion wave in for a fast level two. However, caitlynyordletrap.png may be started, and can be particularly useful when paired with a snare or other cc from your support.

After getting level two, you want to get your caitlynentrapment.png, as it provides you with a good burst caitlynpiltoverpeacemaker.png  + caitlynentrapment.png combo, as well as an escape if needed. An alternative is the caitlynyordletrap.png level, which, as said before, can be useful when paired with your support.

After level 3, you want to primarily max  caitlynyordletrap.png, as it increases the trap limit/stack refresh/and headshot damage. Generally, this is the best option, as it provides great zoning and burst with the caitlynentrapment.png + headshot damage.

For Caitlyn, you generally want to start with a Doran's Blade, as it gives you much more sustain and damage than any other starting item. Afterwards, for your first components, you want to get tier one boots and the damage components of Infinity Edge, B.F. Sword and Pickaxe, before getting a Zeal. This is done because IE is only truly efficient after getting the 40% critical strike that both it and Zeal provide. After these first components, you want to finish either you IE or a Zeal item, whichever you have the gold for first (prioritizing IE).

Afterwards, you can branch out for your remaining items based on what you and your team needs. For example, if your team needs more siege pressure, you can get Rapid Firecannon to increase your range, Essence Reaver to increase your poke with its cdr and mana sustain, and a Bloodthirster to sustain. If your team needs to melt the enemy tanks, then get a Lord Dominik's Regards (or a Mortal Reminder if the enemy team has a lot of self healing) and a Blade of the Ruined King to shred them.

If you require more defensive items than the Maw of Malmortius can suffice for, you can get a Mercurial Scimitar or Banshee's Veil if the enemy team has heavy cc, or Guardian Angel or Sterak's Gage to survive in a fight longer.

VS

Ashe

Easy

Ashe is an easy matchup for Caitlyn. Not only does Caitlyn safely outrange Ashe, she can easily outtrade Ashe, whose main damage comes from herasheQ.png enhanced autos and herasheW.png poke. Simply attack out of Ashe’s range, especially whenever a headshot proc is up, and stand behind minions or your support to block Ashes’sasheW.png. And when Ashe activates her asheQ.png, simply disengage with yourcaitlynentrapment.png. After level 6, the matchup becomes a bit more complex, as you should worry about an all in with Ashe’s  asheR.png. However, a well timedcaitlynentrapment.png or 4.png can allow you to avoid this all in, turning the battle in your favor again.

VS

Draven

Hard
Draven is a fairly hard matchup for Caitlyn, as Draven does incredible damage with his dravenspinning.png active, and with his dravenrcast.png.  As a result, he can prove to be difficult when given the opportunity to attack you. However, Draven is a fairly easily predictable champion, due to the nature of his kit, and is outranged by Caitlyn. Simply use these facts to your advantage, by setting up proper traps, and kiting Draven, who has to run to you if he wants to trade. Additionally, you never want to allow Draven a kill, as his passive will allow him to snowball very fast if given opportunity. So if need be, simply play passive, and outfarm him (both of which Caitlyn can do very well) to win the matchup.

VS

Ezreal

Easy
Ezreal is an easy matchup for Caitlyn. Ezreal’s main goal is to farm up to his 3043.png/ Sheen item powerspike, most commonly 3025.png as of this patch. As such, Ezreal will have very insignificant damage early, especially if he goes for 3025.png, and can easily be outtraded by Caitlyn, who not only will have the range advantage, but also the damage advantage due to her first items being 3031.pngand a Zeal item. To win this matchup, simply poke him down with Caitlyn’s range and caitlynpiltoverpeacemaker.png, and avoid the poke from his ezrealmysticshot.png and ezrealessenceflux.png, and dodge or stay behind minions/allies to reduce the damage of his ezrealtrueshotbarrage.png.

VS

Graves

Medium

Graves, however rarely seen in the ADC role as of this patch, is a fairly average matchup for Caitlyn. Because his autos can be blocked, and his gravesclustershot.png in the open field is easily dodged, Caitlyn can safely trade him behind the safety of her minions. Simply avoid any all in with an caitlynentrapment.png or 4.png, and you should win this matchup.

VS

Jhin

Hard
Jhin is a hard matchup, as Jhin has one of the most oppressive laning phases of all ADCs. To win this matchup, you have to take advantage of Caitlyn’s range, as well as trade Jhin after he uses his fourth shot. In addition, you must be aware of how dangerous Jhin becomes as you get lower. With his fourth auto and fourth shot on his jhinR.png, Jhin can easily finish you off if you are low enough. In fact, Jhin has many ways to finish off a low health target with his kit, so it is important that you keep aware of his strength. However, he has glaring weaknesses that can be taken advantage of: his reload timer and his immobility. If those weaknesses are properly taken advantage of, he can easily be beaten.

VS

Jinx

Medium

Jinx is another average matchup for Caitlyn. This matchup is actually one of the most balanced matchups for Caitlyn, as neither side has true advantages over the other, at least in my opinion. Caitlyn has the range advantage for a little while, until Jinx puts enough points in her jinxQ.png to match the range in her rocket form. In addition, while Jinx is immobile beyond her passive, she can match Caitlyn’s escape in her caitlynentrapment.png, with a well timed jinxW.png. As such, the matchup is more a skill matchup than anything. Even after level 6, the matchup is still balanced, as both Caitlyn’s and Jinx’s ults can be avoided (ally blocking for Caitlyn’s caitlynaceinthehole.png, dodging/ally blocking Jinx’s jinxR.png)

VS

Kalista

Medium
Kalista is an average matchup for Caitlyn. This matchup is actually determined through the supports, as Kalista’s strengths lie in her support being present, as well as the type of support she has. If Kalista has a heavy engage support, such as Alistair, she can easily use kalistaR.png to initiate onto the Caitlyn, as the ultimate, plus any form of cc the support can bring, is fairly hard to avoid. However, if the Kalista has a ranged support like Janna, it becomes a much easier matchup, as the heavy engage is not there. In most situations though, simply outrange the Kalista, and fall back if the Kalista's kalistaE.pngstacks reach dangerous levels.

VS

Kog'Maw

Easy
Kog’Maw is an easy matchup for Caitlyn. His main damage comes from being able to sit and melt down targets with his kogmawbioarcanebarrage.png active, and whenever it is on cooldown, he can easily be taken advantage of using Caitlyn’s range. In addition, his first item powerspike, 3124.png at the time of this guide, is fairly expensive, and as such, you will be able to reach your core items just as soon, or even before him, and be able to outdamage him.

VS

Lucian

Hard

I find Lucian to be one of, if not the hardest matchup for Caitlyn, as he easily invalidates her range advantage with his lucianE.png and lucianQ.png. Lucian’s burst trades allow him to easily outtrade Cait, who cannot get damage out as fast with her autos and her caitlynpiltoverpeacemaker.png, which is the main advantage he has in the matchup. In addition, Lucian’s lucianR.pngis very oppressive, and can easily turn a losing or even fight in his favor, as Caitlyn’s own caitlynaceinthehole.pngis much less safe to use, and requires her to immobilize herself. To win this matchup, you have to attack him whenever his lucianQ.png is down, and never attempt to openly 1v1 him, as in most situations, it will be incredibly hard to win. In addition, you should always attempt to use your traps to caught him out of position.

VS

Miss Fortune

Easy
Miss Fortune is a fairly easy matchup for Caitlyn. This is because MF gets outranged by Caitlyn, in addition to being fairly immobile beyond her missfortuneviciousstrikes.png. MF can do heavy damage if given the opportunity, but her damage is very situational, as it requires a good missfortunericochetshot.png bounce hitting, and a good missfortunebullettime.png. However, to avoid this damage and win the matchup, simply avoid standing behind minions/champions, especially if the first target is low to avoid the missfortunericochetshot.png damage, and do not engage MF in a chokepoint.

VS

Sivir

Easy
Sivir is an easy match up for Caitlyn. Sivir’s main trading comes from her q and her w bounces from minions. However, this damage is easily avoidable, as Sivir’s spiralblade.png is a somewhat slow moving projectile that is easy to dodge when thrown in a line, and her ricochet.png bounces can be avoided by standing away from minions and your support. To win against Sivir, simply poke her from ranged, and never caitlynaceinthehole.pngher until you know her spellshield.png is down, so that she cannot negate it.

VS

Tristana

Medium
Tristana is an average matchup for Caitlyn. Similarly to Kalista, Tristana does her primary damage with her detonatingshot.png, and wants to win trades by stacking it up fully and exploding it. However, unlike Kalista, Tristana has a resetting jump in her w, which can prove to be difficult to play against. In addition, due to her passive, Tristana will eventually match Caitlyn’s range given time. To win this matchup, simply be wary of Trist’s detonatingshot.png, and rocketjump.png resets, and her bustershot.pngburst, and trade whenever Trist’s detonatingshot.png is down.

VS

Twitch

Medium
Twitch is an average matchup for Caitlyn to lane against. He lacks the range necessary to win trades, as his main form of trading comes from autos + his twitchE.png. As such, simply attack him out of his range, and when he attempts to retaliate, back off to not allow him full passive stacks for a stronger twitchE.png. This matchup is a bit more difficult later on, however, as an invisible Twitch can utilize the attackspeed and damage from his twitchQ.png and twitchR.png, along with the slow from his twitchW.png to easily catch you out of position when given time for level and itemspikes. To avoid this, attempt to deepward, and always stay near allies.

VS

Vayne

Hard
Vayne is, in my opinion, one of Caitlyn’s hardest matchups. It is common knowledge to many that Caitlyn wins this matchup during the laning phase. However, from my knowledge and many others I’m sure, this is only true up until level 6 when Vayne gets all the tools she needs to all in the Caitlyn. To win this matchup, you should completely take advantage of your strengths pre-6, and play muchsafer post-6. Be sure to always keep a trap line to fall back on after 6, and not waste your caitlynentrapment.png until after Vayne uses her vaynetumble.png for invisibility during her vayneinquisition.png, as she can dodge it and catch up to you afterwards. In addition, make sure to never stay close to any walls to avoid a Vayne vaynecondemn.png.

Hello there! My name is Inter, and I am a Diamond 5 Caitlyn main. I made this guide with hopes that I can share my knowledge of her, and help people aspiring to be Caitlyn players or mains themselves. Do note, however, that this guide is subjective, and may not be accurate or applicable in all situations. It is merely a culmination of all things I have seen/worked for me.

With that said, I hope everyone viewing this can learn something out of it, and can apply what they learn to climb in rankings.

If something is inaccurate, or you have advice on how to make this guide better, let me know by either commenting on this guide, messaging me at my twitter (@NvInterix), or adding me in game (ig: Interix92). In addition, feel free to message me if you have any questions, and I will happily help.

Thanks for reading.
