Summoner Spells Back to Top

So, this is my first guide (please go easy on me), and it's for my main swashbuckler, Gangplank. Now, I've mained him for most of season six and I was tempted to give him up during season seven. He just hasn't felt like himself with tanks being so prevalent so I decided to change tactics. Rather than going the late game, full crit build I came up with the idea of a full lethality build. It's better for the midgame team fights since most solo queue games tend not to drag on long enough for GP to hit his stride. I've tested this build out a few times, and I would greatly recommend it to any GP main out there who feels like the old pirate just isn't as good as he used to be.

I recommend taking flash and exhaust as summoner spells since most top laners can dive you with jungle help. You still have good global pressure with ult (learn to multitask your lane and the minimap, make sure to look at lanes that have recently been in fights i.e. ally has died or enemy has died and see if there are any kills you can clean up). Exhaust is also good if you think you can get a kill in the early game and it scales better into the late game than ignite.

I personally don't like the idea of taking teleport on GP because of the global pressure from ult, not to mention that GP's tp ganks are really lackluster. You might be able to get a q off, but you won't be able to set up your barrels efficiently enough to make a massive difference. Frankly, TP is better if you prefer it over a defensive/offensive sum, but I've always felt that it just gets you to lane faster.

Flash ignite is for the brave Manplanks out there. Take the ignite with a long sword and three health pots if you think you can cheese an early kill and watch those silver serpents stack up on your enemy's corpses.

Masteries Back to Top

So, my masteries may seem a bit odd since I'm choosing some more offensive picks. I like the Mericless mastery because it synergizes really well with ult to net a kill here and there early game, and assassin is just to help the laning phase and allow you to keep up a bit better with the tanks and other early game champs that you otherwise would have more trouble dealing with.

You could go grasp, however I would not recommend that since it takes away a ridiculous amount of damage from your ult

Very standard ability progression, gangplankqwrapper.png Parrrley max first for the silver serpents and poke if necessary, gangplanke.pngpowder kegs second for the slow, cd, and extra damage to champions, gangplankw.pngoranges last because they may remove scurvy, but they don't do damage. Finally, upgrade ultgangplankr.png whenever possible.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Best start, imo. Gives health, mana sustain, and some extra ap so your oranges can do more work earlier on.
For the manliest of planks out there, take this to start but still get sheen asap

Core Items

Whether you're the Manplank or not, this is the build I have found to do the most damage in mid-late game.
Now, if you really don't trust this gold scrub to know what he's talking about, a standard crit gp build would be to take these items
Buy the ult upgrades in this order. Try to get death's daughter within the first 20 minutes of the game, and if you're csing well, you should have the other two upgrades before 40 minutes

Situational Items

Now, I know this is a Lethality build, but the last item doesn't have to be edge of night, you can change your build path if necessary to fit in a maw or steraks earlier on in the game, and an IE last item may not be a bad idea. Death's Dance is pretty decent on GP, the only caveat is that you won't need the 10% cdr that it gives if you already have yomuus.
Boots are, again, iffy if you go with this build. Ionian boots are good for the passive effect of reducing summoner cd's however you're wasting the 10% cdr if you buy youmuus. Swifties are good on gp because he's all about the barrel speed ups to reposition and kite. I honestly like merc treads on GP because oranges can only do so much. If the enemy team has a lot of cc, don't feel like it's a waste to take an item that would otherwise be unnecessary.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

You don't really see Aatrox much, but his early game can be fairly strong, so do not underestimate him. E gives him a lot of poke and Q is fairly good for engage. An experienced player will know to immediately focus any barrel that's near you when they go in, so be ready with q or an auto in order to get off some extra damage and so that your barrel isn't just 10 extra gold sitting in their pocket.

VS

Akali

Hard

Oh god. This ninja (insert rude word) is a very irritating matchup. You can win the lane until she hits six and afterwards if she gets some help from her jungler, you are pretty much screwed. Top line is normally an island, but most junglers know by now that a GP is very easy to gank because he doesn't have much in the way of an escape. Akali will destroy you with her q, empowered autos, and R so be very safe. This is a matchup where Maw would be very helpful.

VS

Darius

Hard

Now, I know there are probably some people out there saying "Darius is so easy to beat with Gangplank, what is this kid talking about" and to those people I say, shut up. You can kite around him with barrels, but this lane is all about knowing what you are doing and playing damn near perfectly in order to not die or be dove by darius and his jungler when he hits six.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Haven't been seeing much of Ekko lately, but this is primarily a skill matchup. The lane could go either way, but it tends to go in the Ekko's favor, so you may just want to sit back and farm with Q and barrels, but try not to push the wave or else he will just run you down.

VS

Fiora

Medium

One of the more interesting matchups, and one of the reasons why I always take exhaust. Fiora is a duelist, if you slip up, you're dead. GP can do well in a 1v1, but do not think of him as a duelist, you cannot just run into lane and 100-0 the Fiora, although she could probably do it to you even if you are ahead. Farm with Q and barrels, try not to push the wave, and do what you can to keep the wave frozen just outside tower range.

VS

Garen

Easy

Garen is a potato, don't really worry about this one, although you definitely do not want to be 1v1ing this guy at any point during the game. Poke him down if you want to be aggro, but make sure to keep a barrel up behind you so that you can auto it and walk away if he charges you

VS

Gnar

Easy

This matchup can go either way, but it is really easy if you get a kill or two over the gnar. Harass him with q when he's mini, but always prioritize minions and silver serpents over fighting your lane opponent. There are plenty of outplay opportunities, and this lane becomes exponentially easier once you learn how to consistently do triple barrels.

VS

Graves

Hard

Well, if you see a Graves top, you should A.) report him for cheesing, and B.) hope that your jungler takes mercy on you and ganks a couple times to make sure that Graves isn't taking your turret 10 minutes into the game. Farm with Q and barrels, you probably won't have to worry about pushing because of Graves aa and Q, but your priority in this lane is to stay alive and keep up in CS

VS

Illaoi

Medium

So, the tentacle monster of Top, Illaoi. She was Gangplank's first love, and she will let you know just how hard she dumped you if you stay in range of her ult. You can kite her easily with barrels and your speed up from passive and barrels, but never engage in a direct fight because you will lose. If you poke her down enough and she does not have ult or mana for ult, go in but as always, your priority is getting those silver serpents for ult upgrades and your items.

VS

Irelia

Hard

Annoying matchup, she can probably dive you at some point, so go for mid game and teamfights. Laning with GP is all about knowing the matchups, when you laner is stronger than you, when you hit your power spikes, and staying alive to get gold

How to be a Pirate/ A little bit about my Experience Back to Top

I started LoL around March 2015. Season 6, I started Bronze 4 and made my way up to Gold 3 using a lot of zac, cho'gath, and finally Gangplank to climb. My win rate last season, if I'm correct, was ~76% with Gangplank, so I'd like to think that I'm not a complete idiot when it comes to this champion. I know people like Tobias Fate look down on the armor pen build, but I honestly feel like it's come a long way since season 6. Lethality means that armor pen early on may not be as effective, but it scales much better than crit does in regards to dealing with tanks. Normally, tanks would mess you up as GP, but as long as you stay away from them and hit with barrels, you'll be chunking tanks for a third of their health each barrel while still taking out more than half the health of a squishy carry. Normally, the crit build will chunk a carry for most of their health after about 40 minutes, but I've come to realize that the meta right now leans towards more impact earlier on in the game, so I've decided to switch tactics. The crit build takes too long to ramp up imo so I'm opting for a more ad/lethality centered build. Any critiques are welcome and I encourage everyone who's thought of picking up GP to try out this build and just see what happens (granted he doesn't have any really easy matchups, if you know what you're doing, most lanes aren't impossible to win).

41.pngSo, Gangplank is an awesome champion, if you know what you're doing. Positioning and learning how to kite with barrels and use your triple barrels to the utmost effectiveness are really important. Knowing when to ult and where to ult to maximize damage is also quite important. Frankly, from what I understand of GP it would be very hard to completely explain what you must do in order to completely succeed with GP.
For starters, learn his matchups, understand why you do what you have to do because if you don't know why you do something, chances are you're going to mess up pretty badly. In lane, your job is not to waste mana and gold on harassing your lane opponent with Q. Most of the time, you're fighting champions like maokai or yasuo who have abilities that render your poke very insignificant. It is more important to focus on farming with q and barrels, but not using your barrels to harass unless there is a large wave near your turret. Using barrels to harass will put you in a bad position because it will push the wave much faster than just last hitting with q's and autos. In a ranged matchup, farming with q and getting a stinger after sheen is your best bet so that you can decrease your Q cd as much as possible.
In teamfights, do not go in. You are not a tank, you are more like a cross between an ad caster and an adc. You rely on barrels for your aoe damage and kiting, but the damage you deal is like the damage of an adc, but dealt in burst. You don't do sustained damage, remember that. Fight around your barrels, not your autos or just your q's. If you're fed, a good tripel barrel plus ult (if you land the true damage barrage) will kill most squishies.
