Summoner Spells Back to Top

When playing GP it is very crucial to have flash as your go to summoner spell since you have no reliable escape. Flash is also very important to have to make flash combos or just to secure kills so you can grab that sweet gold. Usually when plying toplane you almost always want to have tp because of the early game farm and xp is so important for you, and your early game is ass. Gp almost loses all match ups vs other toplaners, and that is why tp is good so you do not fall too far behind your opponent.

There are always some exceptions when using summoner spells, for example exhaust. Exhaust is more of a GP mid summoner spell imo, but it can be useful in some match ups in the toplane. I for one used to struggle a lot in laning phase vs champions that have high burst in the early game and a lot of mobility. Champions like Riven, Irelia, Jayce and Pantheon. Three of these champions usually have tp while Pantheon players mostly have ignite. If you have not learned how to lane properly as gp, then I suggest you play with exhaust and take the risk to lose some farm instead of randomly dying to the enemy laner.

Ignite is a summoner spell that I only use against 2 champions when i am confident in that I won't get dived all the time by the enemy jungler. I suggest grabbing ignite vs Fiora. It gives you a lot of presence in the lane, and makes up for your weak early game. Fiora won't and should not be able to kill you in a 1v1 pre 6. You should never 1v1 her when she is level six or higher or have some core items. The ignite is useful vs fiora because of the grevious wounds and the damage of course. The second champ that you might have a good use of ignite vs in some cases is Swain, but I would not recomend it because he can bully you way more than Fiora can. I suggest you have tp or exhaust instead

Ghost is used rarely in the midlane, it’s good for chasing and sticking on to weak enemies that are trying to escape. This is a summoner spell that is only used in mid as far as I know.

Masteries Back to Top

So, for the masteries there are also many different ways to use them, and it also depends on how the game plays out. If you have an easy/medium lane, then i suggest you take the masteries that are above. Sorcery for more damage, feast for sustain, natural talent for scaling and either bounty hunter or double edged sword works fine. I prefer Bounty hunter because of the reliable damage it gives you in the mid game and later on. In the middle tree you can switch it up however you like it, but i recommend to always have Bandit, intelligence and TLD if you are going this page. The others are optional to your own liking. If you want to play defensive and still want the raw power from TLD then it also works to go 0-18-12.

There are also other ways to set up your masteries for gp's fullest potential. I prefer to have grasp of the undying in hard melee match ups. Champions like Irelia, Fiora, Riven and Yasuo who wants to be in your face all the time are heavily reliant on their spells. You will lose a 1v1 most of the times vs these 4 champions in the laning phase unless they are really bad or make a mistake. When going grasp of the undying you are gonna go 12-0-18. You go the same as the TLD page in the first tree, and then the third tree I think that the regeneration is very important so take both of those points. The regeneration is very rewarding and feels good during the laning phase. This page is mostly for playing defensive and not to lose trades too hard vs some of the champions mentioned above.

The third page that I've started to use more the past few weeks is 18-12-0 with Warlords as keystone. Why I use warlords is because some match ups are really fucking annoying. When playing vs ranged champion you are going to be heavily outtraded by them because your own and only reliable ranged spell in the laning phase is your Q. The barrels take too long to charge up before level 7 unless the enemies are goofs. Warlords is a very good keystone because it can be procked on your q which heals you and gives you a nice movement speed boost. This might not sound very good, but if you keep on being mobile it will charge up faster and the trades won't be that bad, plus the warlords prock stacks with your passive. This page is only used in like 10% of my games, but it can be a really good lifesaver from time to time.

Nothing special to note here in the spells except for the levels 2-4. Sometimes you might want to grab yuor heal at level 2 or at level 4. It all depends on how good you are laning, if the enemy is playing agressive or if you can smell the gank from the enemy jungler. Sometimes there is a possibility that your enemy laner makes a mistake early on, and then it is important for you to punish them, that's why i prefer to take ANOTHER point in Q just for the extra harass. This might be tricky because they might bait you into thinking that they are at low hp and are helpless when there is actually a jungler lurking in the bushes.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Sapphire crystal is a good pick up if you want a small powerspike early on with sheen. If that's the case, then do an early recall when you reach 700 gold and abuse it. Sheild is good vs ranged champions with a lot of poke (Kennen and Pantheon)
This is mostly if you want to go defensive and you have been very close to dying in a 1v1 or have died too many times. The ring is good for the extra sustain, believe me. Cull is good if you are too far behind.
Not starting items, but somewhat good in your first back. It all depends on if you are doing well, very well, ok or bad. I would also ad in a hexdrinker if you are having a hard time vs a Fizz or a Swain.

Core Items

This is a common build, the items can be swapped depending on the enemy team. There is no need for LDR if you are vs a squishy team, and tabi's are not always the best option.
The critplank build. The last item is whatever is needed. Armor pen/boots/survivability etc.
This is more of a bruiser build if this is your cup of tea. All gangplanks prefer different items, and to be honest the new death's dance is very strong. There is a posibility to swap one of the items above depending on the enemy team. For example Ldr, ie, pd and more items that would be to your liking.
This is my personal favourite the past week. I will keep abusing death's dance until they nerf it. Remember that it is a situational item.

Situational Items

Everything is situational depending on what you and your team needs and who your enemies are. Randuins vs heavy crit ad teams if you are having trouble. Duskblade is sometimes good to have for the extra penetration. Deadmans procks in your Q and its good vs ad teams and teams with high mobility. Spirit visage is very strong on gp atm for the healing, and a good pick up vs heavy magic damage comps. The boots depends on if you need cdr or if the enemy have to much cc and your W isn't for much help.

Your starting items can depend on everything there is in the game. Match up, masteries, runes, confidense, tilt and if you are insecure. The most common start that I do is a dorans ring and x2 pots. I like this start for the 60 hp, mana ragen and the 4 mana you get back when you last hit, it's a good item to use if you want to farm with your q or poke a lot with that sweet bandit gold. If you go grasp of the undying then you should always go corrupting potion, because grasp + corrupting are busted af together.

Some of you might wonder why there is no sterak's gage in either of the build or in any of the item slots mentioned above. Well to be completely fair, that item is kinda bad now on gp after the changes to it. Now when the sheild procks on your bonus health it is not as rewarding. With other words, the sheild is too small.

Another small and important thing is to always keep your tri brush warded with a pink. Gp is a champion that is easily ganked and its alaways worth to spend 75 gold to foresee this if you keep and eye on the minimap. Put barrels in the lane bushes if you are expecting a lane gank and buy the blue trinket when you get level 9. You have to always be very cautious when playing gp.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

It depnds on how the lane is played if he jumps on to you and goes for the all in, there is a chance that you might die if his bloodwell is fully stacked. Either way just farm normally, call for ganks and poke poke poke.

VS

Akali

Medium

You go even and maybe a little bit ahead pre 6. Akali is not even a champion when she has no ulti. Be careful when she hits 6 because she will kill you if you make a mistake. Try to get some hp and stay out of her ult range, do not greed for minions.

VS

Camille

Easy

Pretty easy lane, she has no reliable cc vs you and you spike at the same time after laning phase. She dumpsters you in the late game if she is good. If she gets ahead it may get a little bit harder in lane, but she should not be any trouble.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Easy match up, just dodge his abilities and poke him for that sweet bandit gold. If he is going full ap for some reason he might have some kill pressure on you.

VS

Darius

Medium

Can be hard, can be easy. It depends on how the first 5 minutes goes. If neither of you gets any ganks you should be fine. He should not have any kill pressure vs you before 6. Rush Ninja tabi's vs him, his damage on his passive becomes pretty bad because of tabi's. If he gets an early kill he can just dive you over and over. Try to read this and always have the tri brush pinkwarded in case of a towerdivr happens.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Free and easy lane, he cant kill you alone unless you fuck up and he is free money. Just keep poking him and farm farm farm.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Fuck this bitch. Always ban her, even though you win vs her she always manages to comeback and can easily kill you anytime in the game after level 6. Either way both of you are bad laners, just play it slow and farm a lot. If she gets ahead it's game over in the lane.

VS

Fizz

Hard

He will always have kill pressure in the lane, especially when het gets level 6. Buy hexdrinker early and survive! Your q deals low damage on him because of his passive so never trade with him, just poke for the gold.

VS

Galio

Easy

He has high base damage and his combos are strong, but you can w his taunt easy. Just try to avoid his q and do not get too low under turret. His ultimate is the perfect ult to use when diving. Play it safe, do not try to 1v1 and just farm.

VS

Garen

Easy

He shouldn't be able to come close to you. Be careful around the bushes, never facecheck. Try to poke him a lot and stop his passive all the time. If he buys a dorans sheild you will never be able to kill him alone unless he fucks up.

VS

Gnar

Medium

Can be very annoying and has a high damage potential and can outplay you hard if he gets the chance. Do not take unnecessary damage just because you greed for cs. Try going warlords in this match up if you think he is annoying, especially if he has ferver.

VS

Gragas

Medium

It should be easy in the beginning of the game, but when he gets 6 and has 3 dorans rings he can 100 to 0 you. Be careful and do not trade. He has strong gank assistance, keep it warded and watch the map.

VS

Illaoi

Easy

Just hide behind the minions, she is slow af. Do not try to trade in melee range, she will kill you if you do.

VS

Irelia

Hard

I still to this day do not know how to play this match up well. Her kit makes it very hard for you to farm well, and it is also hard to survive a towerdive from her even if she is alone. Her passive pretty much ruins it for you. Ask for ganks early and make her fall behind so you can farm in peace.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

I'm leaning to hard in this match up because some jarvans can be really fucking good. He has high damage, sheilds, attack speed steroids and an ult that you cannot escape. Sometimes exhaust might be the answer to J4. Just try to farm and walk forward when his q or flag is down so he cant jump on you. Do not trade, he has more attack speed and penetration.

VS

Jax

Easy

Pretty easy before level 11, after that he can kill you easily. Just poke him in lane, do not stand on your barrels, yes he can jump to them. Try to have your w always ready when his stun is ready. Do not walk to close to him when his passive is fully stacked, it will hurt.. a lot.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Fuck this guy. He has one of the highest early burst damage in the early game, and you can never outtrade him. Pick up warlords or grasp vs him, survive him and survive the ganks. Call for ganks if you have any trouble. Just try to farm but do not greed.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

He has low damage early on, i'm pretty sure you can win trades and kill him 1v1 when you get sheen.

VS

Kayle

Medium

Annoying bitch. She will push you in and you can't do shit about it unless your jungler ganks. She will kill you all the time in the game in a 1v1, do not even try it. Still she is not that hard to farm vs, but she can fuck your barrels hard because her e is instant when she hits them.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Annoying match up, do not trade because he kites you. Go warlords and surive the lane, just farm with q outside of turret and with auto attacks under turret.

VS

Kled

Medium

If he gets ahead he can be a pain, his q is pretty bad vs you because of your w. Always have a barrel ready behind you so he can't chase you. If he is on you he is hard to shake off. Go tabi's, it will stop is his stupid W damage.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

If she is very aggressive she can be hard, just farm and wait for ganks.

VS

Malphite

Easy

A free lane, he can't kill you alone and you can't kill him alone. Just poke him and farm, you both will scale, get and early LW so you can still bully him.

VS

Mordekaiser

Medium

Don't go close to him. Just farm and poke him, you can kill him if he fucks up.

VS

Nasus

Medium

You will both farm a lot just keep poking so he cant stack and be a monster. If he is full ap, then you are donezo.

VS

Nautilus

Medium

Probably the best tank to pick vs gp. He has high base damage, big ass sheild and great gank assistance. He can kill you 1v1 so do not try to 1v1 him. Just poke him behind minions and farm.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Be happy feet in this match up, if he hits one axe, you might be a dead pirate. Farm with Q, do not trade and wait for ganks. Luckily he has no gapclosers

VS

Pantheon

Hard

You can't win this lane. Just be sad and stay under the turret. His q has higher damage than your q and lower cd as well. You can't poke him because of his passive, you still get the bandit gold if you q him though. Try to farm with q from distance. If you have 60% hp don't go close to him if he has ignite up, you will die.

VS

Poppy

Easy

Just farm vs her and do not trade. Try to avoid terrain and just poke her. You need ganks to kill her unless she fucks up.

VS

Quinn

Hard

Almost the same as Pantheon. Quinn's always have ignite and will try to trade and kill you. Just farm, play safe and wait for ganks.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Just farm and poke him, do not trade, he has ridiculously high damage in the early game, you are the opposite. If he gets one kill onto you, he might snowball. Just try to go even and wait for ganks. If you get 1 or 2 kills on him, he should not have a chance of coming back.

VS

Riven

Hard

She will kill you anytime in the game. Go grasp and corrupting against her, try to bait her spells and then poke and damage her. You can win this lane if she gets too cocky. Many Riven players tend to get cocky. Rush tabis and dorans blades vs her so you can deal some dmg on your autos. Keep a barrel ready behind you in case of an all in.

VS

Rumble

Medium

Do not trade, just poke and go forward and last hit only when his q is down. It can deal 300 dmg when he is level 5, so be careful. Ask for ganks when his ult is down or else he can double kill you.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Just keep on poking him early on, do not let him hit his q on you, just poke and bully him. You can win this 1v1 since both of you have weak early levels.

VS

Shen

Easy

Do not trade with him if he has grasp, his q and grasp together deals a lot of damage. Just poke him and farm.

VS

Singed

Medium

Can be very annoying he gets ahead, he can just dive you and run away. He will keep on doing that until you are low enough to die from him. Playsafe, do not fall into his trap and farm from a distance.

VS

Sion

Easy

Has high damage early on, do not trade with. Try to farm and get an early LW if it's needed. Poke him a lot, he has no gapclosers.

VS

Swain

Medium

Can be very annoying if he is good. If you have warlords you can make his q useless because it doesnt slow you enough when you have warlords. Try to farm when his spells are on cooldown, and do not trade after 6.

VS

Teemo

Medium

If he has ignite he is very hard to play against, if not just farm from a distance and wait for ganks. If you hit one barrel during a gank, then he is dead. Playsafe and do not greed for cs, you will probably lose 300-400 hp if you do.

VS

Trundle

Easy

Not that hard, just do not trade and keep poking. you can't kill him because of his sustain. He is a strong diver because of his ult so be careful.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Try to farm from a distance and call for ganks pre 6. If he gets 1 kill then he can dive you. Try to get early tabi's and do not walk close to him when his fury is above 60%. Try to poke and farm minions that are far away from him.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Can be very annoying and has high kill pressure and is good at diving you. Farm from distance, and keep an eye on his crimson. His q can deal almost 200 level 1. If he has ignite be very careful and never walk close to him.

VS

Warwick

Easy

You outrange him. He can't get to you unless he flashes or ults you. Just poke him and farm, do not let him q you, if he does he is very hard to shake off.

VS

Wukong

Medium

Can be hard, can be easy, it depends on how he is playing and his build. Just poke him and farm when his e is down. He will win trades easily.

VS

Xin Zhao

Hard

It is a cheese pick, but if you play vs xin top you will want to kys. His dash is the same range as your q. Farm under turret where he can't touch you and call for ganks.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Pretty easy to play against. Go grasp and corrupting, buy early tabi's and he is cake. The only way he can kill you is if he ults you and you keep fighting him for some dumb reason. Poke him a lot and farm. Call only for ganks if you have a jungler that can lock him down, or else he will just dance salsa around you.
