Master Gangplank

5656.PNG

Hi,

Thanks for stopping by my Gangplank guide.
As of creating this guide, I am currently one of the highest rated Gangplank ONLY players in North America. On my main, I hover around Master Tier playing a number of other champions.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

  • This guide focuses on Gangplank toplane.
  • This guide focuses towards players who are NEW to Gangplank players.
  • This guide provides useful information to EXPERIENCED Gangplank players.
  • This guide assumes you are a MANPLANK (NO "wait till late game"/ farm-only BS)

179.png

12.png 4.png

Teleport and Flash are sadly the best options for toplane Gangplank.

The reason I say "sadly" is because you aren't going to be using your teleport to teleport gank other lanes. You'll mainly be teleporting back to lane.

However, you ONLY teleport to other lanes when you're SURE that you'll snag a kill out of it.

3.png4.png

Exhaust USED TO BE good, but no more. They removed the armor and magic resist reduction, as well as the attack speed slow. Now, its not good in duels.
I don't play mid, but if I were against a zed or syndra, I would take exhaust.

New Runes Back to Top

127.jpg

OPTION 1
The Kleptomancy "Fun" Setup

If you're trying out GP for the first time and want to get in on the hype, KLEPTOMANCY is what people go for. And no doubt, it is FUN. However, I find that the higher elo I get, the more I need the dueling power from the GRASP page.

Kleptomancy.png?width=64Kleptomancy

Read the tooltip first.
You can proc this every 2 seconds. Very similar to a sheen. Therefore, it's best to use your Q on the enemy instead of farming minions.
Currently, the bags of gold you get from this item provide 40 to 110 gold. Every-time you get a bag, CLICK ON IT.
You can also sell the consumables (ward items, oracle elixir, etc) if you want to at the shop. I recommend doing this.
HOWEVER, I recommend you using up your 2031.pngrefillable potion before using the pots.

It activates at 6 minutes.
This bad boy can prevent tower dives.
It can make tower-dive better.
But most important... it saves you 300 gold towards building a Guardian Angel 3026.png. As GA is a core item on GP, this is a core rune when playing with Kleptomancy.

Saves you 350 gold in total and provides a permanent +10 flat move-speed buff that you can't get anywhere else.
In my opinion, much better than Futures%20Market.png?width=32 Futures Market. Backing with 700g for 3057.png isn't too hard for GP if you play the lane correctly.

We take this because the other options are simply trash.
The +5% over-cap CDR is quite nice, however.

179.pngOPTION 2

Grasp of the Undying MANPLANK

This build is what I myself run most of the time. In higher elos, your enemies become smarter. Every-time I go in to Q a Jayce, for example, he will completely all in me and potentially kill me. Therefore, if I can't Q the Jayce, or if I'm versus a lane opponent who I know I can't Q at all, I take this GRASP rune setup. Aka, the Manplank build.

Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=64Grasp of the Undying
Grasp gives you pressure and damage in lane that Kleptomancy doesn't give you. Just remember not to play stupidly and constantly push your lane with this rune. I've seen newer gangplank players constantly push in and get ganked and die.

Demolish is your only next best option, the other two aren't great. That being said, Demolish does a good amount of damage to turrets.

If you're against a Pantheon toplane, you can take the +5 armor from IronskinIron%20Skin.png?width=32. However, never take the +5 Magic Resist rune, because its simply ineffective against AP damage dealers.
90% of the time, you're taking conditioning.

Second Wind in my opinion is  better than Overgrowth. Since you won't be building Doran's Shield on GP, this rune is essentially a better version of a Doran's Shield passive. The amount of healing you get from Second Wind is insane.

179.png

This rune will give us our final 10% CDR to cap the maximum CDR limit of 40% (or 45%). I play GP not like a noob crit auto attack champion. I play GP like an AD caster- I land barrels, I Q enemies, but I don't run in to auto attack unless I want to apply my passive. Therefore, since we're playing with abilities, capping the CDR is essential. And so is this rune.

Ultimate Hat allows us to spam GP ultimates as we please. And by level 13, I usually find that I maxed out the CDR from this ability (it scales from 5% to 15%).

gangplankqwrapper.png Q Parrrley

  • Don't use your Q to farm. If possible, always use it to Q the enemy.
  • Especially during the early levels, as soon as you Q an enemy, run into one of the top bushes. If you don't, you will take minion aggro, and lose alot of health.
  • Your Q applies on hit effects. TriForce, Sheen, Red Buff etc.

179.png

gangplankw.png W Remove Scurvy

  • Stronger heal the lower your health.
  • Don't hold onto it for too long. Better use it earlier in a fight rather than later.
  • Make sure you use up all your refillable potions before you start using your W to heal up in lane.
  • It has a cast time. Therefore, you can use W before a stun is about to hit you (0.3 seconds earlier). Then as the stun hits, you will be instantly cleansed.

179.png

gangplanke.png E Power Keg

  • IMPORTANT - Levels 7 and 13 are important for GP. At level 7, the barrel tick rate decreases. At 13, it decreases even more.
  • Your most important combo is the DOUBLE BARREL COMBO. 2 barrels, then detonate. Don't rely on 3 barrel combos. Don't rely on gimmick combos (one part combos, flash combos etc). PERFECT YOUR DOUBLE BARREL COMBO.
  • "One in the hand is worth more than two in the bush" - If you have the opportunity to Q the enemy, Q him. It's better to land a double barrel combo with an auto attack, and Q the enemy. The barrel combo has the potential to fail, but the point and click Q doesn't.
179.png

gangplankr.png R Cannon Barrage

  • High cooldown ultimate. With 40% CDR, and the ultimate hat rune- this becomes a low cooldown ultimate.
  • For the ultimate upgrades, buy 3901.png Fire at Will 1st, 3902.png Deaths Daughter 2nd, and 3903.png Raise Morale 3rd.
  • Keep one eye on the map. It's best to drop the ultimate directly in the center of your target.
  • You can also position your ulti slightly towards the side that the enemy may run. Will the enemy run to their tower? Block off their escape with your ultimate.

EXAMPLE:

223.PNG

179.png

KEY TAKEAWAYS:

  • 1027.pngStart with SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL.
NOTHING is better than SAPPHIRE CRYSTAL. Not a Doran's Shield, Corrupting, NO NO NO. "But what if I'm getting poked too hard, why can't I take Doran's Shield?" - because Sapphire allows you to farm with Q. You double your mana pool so you can safely Q farm and W farm. But most importantly, it allows you to back with an easy 700G for a SHEEN (the first back item).

  • 1001.pngAfter Sheen, Tier 1 boots is ESSENTIAL.
Tier 1 boots allow you to space your enemy and run in and out of effective Q range.

  • 3047.png3111.pngNinja Tabis or Merc Treads are usually completed BEFORE finishing TriForce.
This further helps spacing in lane, evading ganks, landing easy Qs, etc.

  • 3078.pngTriForce core 1st item.
The best item you can build on GP. Primarily because the sheen extra damage on it's passive works with your low CD Q and works in barrel combos.

  • 3142.pngYoumuus Ghostblade core 2nd item.
Effective when built early. I find myself building the Warhammer component first for the 10% CDR.

  • 3026.pngGuardian Angel core 3rd item.
Effective when built early. Very cheap item, high damage, and insane passive when buying it this early.

  • 3053.pngSterak's Gage core 4th item.
The later you build this item, the more gold efficient it is.

  • 3046.pngPhantom Dancer is what I usually build as my final 6th item.
The 30% crit cheese works very well, and the 12% reduced incoming damage makes you tanky af. As listed above, you can substitute any other item here instead of Phantom Dancer.

179.png

What order do I buy ultimate upgrades?

3901.png > 3902.png > 3903.png

3901.png Fire at Will 1st.
Ever since we lost Thunderlord's Decree since the new Season 8 runes, GP's ultimate is weaker when sniping enemies. The first wave doesn't do as much damage as it used to. Therefore, we don't use GP's ultimate to snip kills anymore (at least in the early ranks of the ultimate). We use it to assist our team members, snag assists, and zone out enemies.

3902.png Deaths Daughter 2nd.
Weaker ever since TLD was lost. FaW is simply better. Landing a death's daughter is difficult as it is. So we subsequently take this as our 2nd purchase.

3903.png Raise Morale 3rd.
Definitely not as good as the other two. Don't rely on the movement speed this offers.

179.png

3035.png What about Last Whisperer?

I believe that GP doesn't need a last whisperer.
However, this highly depends on 2 things:
1) If at least 4/5 enemies have armor items (INCLUDING the ADC), it'll be a possible FINAL 6th item buy.
2) If you absolutely need executioners calling3123.png for an enemy swain or soraka, last whisperer is necessary.

VS

Gnar

Medium
  • Annoying little sh*t.
  • He can kill you if he lands a gnarq.png slow on you.
  • He will be very annoying once he has 3022.png .

VS

Illaoi

Easy
  • Take Kleptomancy and Q farm her ass for free items.
  • Buy early tier 2 boots to dodge her illaoie.png

VS

Irelia

Hard
  • If she plays aggressively, you're screwed.
  • Everytime you go up to Q her, she will Qireliagatotsu.png you and destroy you with Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32 .
  • Play it safe.

VS

Jax

Medium
  • One barrel next to you. As soon as you see him start his jump, auto the barrel, apply passive, run away, then Q.
  • He can destroy you once he's 6.
  • Barrel placement is essential.
  • Don't fight auto attack battles.

VS

Jayce

Medium
  • He should all in you every time you go in to Q him.
  • Keep one barrel next to you.
  • Buy early tabis.
  • You beat him easily if you survive the laning phase.
  • GP is worth more than a Jayce in the mid game and later.

VS

Maokai

Medium
  • A good maokai will destroy GP.
  • A bad maokai will be destroyed by GP.
  • A good maokai will always Wmaokaiw.png  into you whenever you go in to Q him.
  • A bad maokai will eat all of your Qs with no retaliation.
  • Therefore, this matchup is heavily dependent on how aggressive the maokai is.

VS

Ornn

Easy

VS

Pantheon

Hard
  • Dodge the game.
  • Until you finish TriForce, you will lose this lane completely.
  • Don't take ANY Qs from him. Don't let him get close to you. You will die.
  • Early Tabis.
  • Don't bother Q ing him. His passive pantheonpassive.png will bait you, and outsmart you.
  • Use your W as you see him leap towards you. Run away.

VS

Riven

Hard
  • You need Tabi's early to run away from her.
  • One barrel next to you at all times.
  • At 6, she can 100 to 0 you instantly (if you're running kleptomancy, with no armor).

VS

Shen

Easy
  • Easy as heck.
  • Q farm him.
  • Be careful of his early levels and level 2. His auto attacks deal alot of damage.
  • Keep 1 barrel next to you, so that if he dashes in you can destroy the barrel, auto him, and run away.

VS

Teemo

Hard
  • Very hard matchup. I almost always ban Teemo.

VS

Yasuo

Medium
  • Don't fight auto attack battles.
  • Keep one barrel gangplanke.png next to you, if he dashes in, destroy the barrel,  auto him once to apply passivegangplankpassive.png, then run away.
  • If you press W immediately as he knocks you up, he won't be able to use his R yasuorknockupcombow.png on you (as your W cleanses you from being airborne, so he can't use his R).
  • Ninja Tabis 3047.png is first buy after finishing Sheen.

VS

Yorick

Hard
  • He simply beats you up
  • He can tower dive you easily.
  • His power comes from his Wyorickw.png  and Eyoricke.png. Buy early Tier 2 boots to dodge them.

Best Combos & Barrel Placement Back to Top

127.jpg

Your Best Combos and Barrel Placement

the most important barrel tips

The Single Barrel Combo

Level 13 is a significant level for GP, as his barrels will tick down much faster. This allows you to do the following:
Drop a barrel outside your Q range. Immediately Q the barrel. Notice how you almost perfectly detonate the barrel.
Level 13 makes it possible to fight team fights with only one barrel. Just drop an E in the middle of a fight (out of your Q range), press Q immediately, and destroy the barrel almost perfectly on time.

The Double Barrel Combo

The double barrel combo is by fare the best combo you can pull off on GP. Not a triple barrel, or a phantom barrel or 6 barrel chain etc. Simply drop one barrel, then another, then destroy the first one. The most basic combo that you should strive for perfect timing. Nothing can really be said about this other than practice. Go into the practice tool and practice 2 barrel combos.

Remember to drop the second barrel just before you plan on detonating the first barrel. Don't drop the first and second barrel immediately after one another.

Barrel Placement

Usually, its best to drop a barrel right before an enemy. I can't really explain placement because its something you have to practice with, its not a conscious thought.

However, its a good idea to always drop one barrel next to you in lane to prevent enemies like Yasuo or Riven from dashing in and destroying you. So drop a barrel next to you. If they dash in, destroy the keg, auto them to apply the passive, run far back, finally Q them.

Dropping barrels to check bushes is also a good idea. Barrels provided very very little vision however. You can't use it as a substitute to warding.

Dropping a barrel in a bush toplane can make you win trades as the enemy won't be expecting a barrel in a bush.

The Phantom Barrel or One-Part Combo Back to Top

127.jpg

The Phantom Barrel Combo

- a difficult trick to pull off. Essentially a double barrel combo, but with less time for the enemy to react.
Not an essential combo. More of a gimmick. I don't do this in real games, but it does look cool.

Critical Strike Gangplank Back to Top

127.jpg

Why don't you build critical strike on Gangplank?

Critical Strike used to be absolutely amazing on GP. Crit would do so much damage in an AoE with your barrels, it was broken. The old build used to be Trinity Force 3078.png into 100% crit items. This is no longer possible.

Ever since they removed the +20% crit chance from Trinity Force in mid 2016, crit strike GP has been bad. The lower crit chance means going infinity edge 3031.png after trinity force nets you overall less damage than simply building a cheaper youmuus ghostblade 3142.png. And if you build Infinity Edge after Youmuus, that is simply too late in the game. Most games close out by 3 items in, and having a 20% crit chance from Infinity Edge is terrible.

Also, your team needs a bruiser to soak up a bit of damage. If you go full crit, you will be one shot by most of the enemy team. Your team doesn't need a 2nd AD carry in the toplane, they need a bruiser.

Bankplank - Ancient Coin Back to Top

127.jpg

What about Bankplank?

UPDATE (December 2017):

I've been running Ancient Coin 3301.png as a starting item for 80% of my toplane matchups. The item works very well, and it synergises with your Q as you get your old bandit back. However, I recommend AGAINST starting Ancient Coin against VERY VERY tough matchups such as Panth/Jayce/Irelia etc as they can abuse you very hard in the laning phase for picking a weak start.
The playstyle with coin is to ALWAYS Q the enemy and only use your auto attacks to kill creeps. This way, you'll get mana potions  back with your Kleptomancy so you can get away with having a low amount of mana. I find myself usually able to back at exactly 1050g for a straight buy into a sheen 3057.png.

I tested it out.
IIt's fun as hell.
But not as good as Sapphire Crystal1027.png + Grasp Grasp%20of%20the%20Undying.png?width=32

3301.pngAncient Coin

If you decide on going bankplank, I believe that going Ancient Coin is your best bet. I don't recommend doing it, however. You will have mana problems during lane, and you will have no battle stats. But you will likely amass 800 gold ++ by the time you sell it very late, netting you a profit of 600G.
Bankplank is a niche pick. I just find that my opponents in higher elo will abuse me hard if I start with this item.

3303.png Spellthief's Edge is another option. Just be sure not to take it when you go Kleptomancy on GP, because you will lose 16AD and gain some useless AP in the early levels.

Always Win Toplane Back to Top

127.jpg

Always Win Toplane

-toplane is won by whoever manages the wave best.

CONSTANTLY PUSHING THE LANE AS GANGPLANK = INSTA LOSE.

You will get ganked.
You will die to the enemy jungler.
Instead, always keep the lane fixed just ahead of your tower in the topside.
Wave management is difficult to explain without considerable practice, but the basics are as follows:

  1. If you Q the enemy, the enemy minions will switch aggro to you. Since they're auto attacking you and not your minions, your minions will push towards the enemy tower.
  2. If the enemy wave has a larger collective health pool than yours, it will push towards you. Same logic applies when your wave has the higher health pool.
  3. Auto attack the creeps with intent. Senselessly auto-ing the enemy minions will cause a push towards the enemy tower. Auto attack the creeps only to allow yourself to hold the freeze just ahead of your tower.

Midlane Gangplank Sucks Back to Top

127.jpg

Midlane Gangplank Sucks

why do people still keep playing GP mid??

Midlane GP is garbage.

Cons:

You can't roam.
You lose the majority of matchups.
You force your teammates to go AP.
You will get constantly shoved in.
You will get harassed under tower.

Pros:

Lower chance of getting tower dove by enemy jungler.
Good counterpick to Kassadin or Ekko.... that's about it. Only these 2 guys.

Essentially, its just because you can't roam that makes GP mid garbage. The midlaners role is to shove in and gank other lanes and assist the jungler to generate PRESSURE. GP doesn't generate pressure in the midlane when compared to the other options available.
