Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png is always a must, especially with Gnars low escapability as Mega Gnar.

12.png is the only viable SS in the game for top laners in my opinion at the moment. So take it!

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Typically i run 12-18-0 Masteries taking Thunderlords as my keystone because well its overpowered. Expecially on a champion like Gnar who abuses the infamous 3 hit proc ability. And that being 3 hits for his passive on his W adding thunderlords is just extra free damage.

Maxing W on Gnar first is the best option i have seen. Giving you the extra attack speed and passive proc damage per health really helps in this patch's meta with all the tanks/big champs. Since your Q does your most solid damage max that second and of course E last. But as always max your ultimate ability whenever possible.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Typical start i take 99% of games with Gnar
Rare occasion i take a dorans shield but still viable against heavy auto attack damage characters
Grab a second dorans early game if you are struggling to stay in lane, gives pretty nice sustain, and a little more health to keep you in lane longer.

Core Items

First back, pick up a cutlass and boots if you haven't already, also grab a ward since vision wins games!
Finish off blade and start working towards your trinity force. I suggest buying a zeal of phage first. Also i like to finish off boots at this stage in the game, mobility and extra cooldowns for lane rotations
These items i get almost every single game. Gives you a great balance of tanky, and damage. With your W proc, trinity force gives you a lot more damage then you can imagine. and with the bork active and your Q's slow you should be able to melt people down.
Pick one, i usually go with spirit visage due to health regen passive, or Randuins Omen for the utility but also banshee's give a good spell shield in certain games.

Situational Items

In case you didn't take armor pen reds, i would pick on of the damage items, i noticed that black cleaver is best of the three but ghostblades active is also very useful. And of course guardian angel is always viable if you are getting targeted or fed.
Merch treads are my second boots option all the time, i have taken ninja tabi against heavy ad teams
Sell your warding trinket for this late game! Help your team rid of wards!

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Aatrox has quite a bit of utility and can burst you down if he gets ahead. Watch out for his W and avoid his slow.

VS

Alistar

Easy

A recent spike in alistar top lane has cam about, just poke him down and make sure you start armor pen runes and maybe even pick up and early black cleaver,

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Avoid cho'gaths abilities and he is the easiest champ to lane against. He is tanky, but with your W proc and BORK you will shred him

VS

Darius

Medium

Darius is always a pain in the ass. You will out lane him until he hits 6. Then no matter if he is fed or not he will be able to duel with you and close range. So keep distance and poke him out of lane

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Early BORK and zeal and this match up will be very easy

VS

Fiora

Medium

With her insane ammount of damage scaling and her parry skill, fiora makes quite a hard lane match up but make sure your jungle shuts her down early, and you should be okay

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Poke him down, and force him out of lane. GP with no farm is nothing

VS

Garen

Medium

Garen, he is interesting he is usually very good or very bad. When i play garen i tend to buy trinity force first, then go into BORK give your self farm time and avoid dueling him one he hits lvl 4

VS

Irelia

Medium

Always a pain in the ass

VS

Jax

Medium

Do not let him get fed and you should be okay. Avoid his stun and do not push lane

VS

Jayce

Easy

VS

Kennen

Easy

VS

Lulu

Medium

She has a lot of cc and scales pretty good with AP stay out of her range and poke her whenever possible

VS

Malphite

Easy

Armor pen armor pen armor pen

VS

Nasus

Medium

Do not let him farm, and avoid his wither for ganks.

VS

Nidalee

Hard

Nidalee matches Gnar in almost every category, but in tiger form she will out duel you in every case unless you are fed. Care of her spears

VS

Olaf

Medium

Easy early game, but hell late game if he gets a slight bit ahead. Play safe

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Do not let him stun you, or you will pay for it. He has quite a huge damage scaling on Q and if built right can out class even fed Gnar's. His only down fall is he will fall off very hard late game.

VS

Renekton

Medium

He has good sustain and is a beefy champion, play safe and poke whenever possible

VS

Rengar

Hard

Pain in the ass. Avoid bushes and his stacks being at 4, or he will melt regular Gnar easily.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Avoid his range and play to your strengths as regular gnar, as Mega Gnar you can duel him easily

VS

Shen

Easy

VS

Shyvana

Medium

she pushes lane very hard and will scale great late game do not feed her

VS

Teemo

Hard

living hell. Out ranges you, and has stealth, i tend to fight him only in Mega form.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Easy lane until 6 then just play safe, make sure you take ignite for when he ults.

VS

Wukong

Medium

Always a great laner, play safe and bait his mana away that will force him out of lane

Extended Build Guide Back to Top

Build Patch/Explanation

This is what your end game result 80-99% of your games should be.

3153_32.png3277_32.png3078_32.png3742.png3071_32.png3102_32.png

Your item build path shouldn't be the same every single game, But that's what this section is for. Is to explain
what scenario's and what items. BUT! there are only 2 items in the game as Gnar you should buy First every single game.

3153_32.png - Blade of the Ruined King

3078_32.png - Trinity Force

But usually these two come in different orders depending on your laning phase.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

FIRST ITEMS-

The first item solely depends on who you are laning against.

1. If your lane partner is a tanky character, or has a lot of health i would start - 3153_32.png (blade of the ruined king)
2. If you have an easy lane, and if you get fed early take - 3078_32.png ( trinity force) determine on your first back if you want to go this route, because buying multiple pieces of multiple items is just silly.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

BOOTS-

Boots also depends on who you are laning against.

1. I take 3158_32.png almost every game, just because of the immense CDR this gves you and gives you the ability to spam Q's and the utility is very nice.

2. Also, 3111_32.png are very viable. They give you a decent ammount of MR and some tenacity help. And as regular Gnar that comes in handy quite a bit.

3. I have only taken 3047_32.png a couple of games, usually when the other team has an ad mid laner, like a 238_64.png or 157_64.png other then that this choice is not as viable.
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

3rd to Final Items-

1. Now assuming you have already purchased 3153_32.png and 3078_32.png the next thing i recommend is maxing our your boots. This gives you extra mobility on top of the trinity force proc, and extra CDR as well.

2. After tier 2 boots its time to look at your game. Who's fed? How much AD? How much Magic Damage? What do we need. At this point its time to pick a tanky item. 3102_32.png and 3742.png are probably your best choices at this point.
3742.png - Dead Man's Plate
Cost: 2900
+500 Health
+50 Armor

UNIQUE Passive - Dreadnought: While moving, build stacks of Momentum, increasing movement speed by up to 60 at 100 stacks. Momentum quickly decays while under the effects of a stun, taunt, fear, silence, blind, polymorph, or immobilize effect, and slowly decays while slowed.
UNIQUE Passive - Crushing Blow: Basic attacks discharge all Momentum, dealing 1 physical damage per 2 stacks. If 100 stacks are discharged, damage is doubled and the target is slowed by 50% decaying over 1 second (melee only).

3102_32.png - Banshee's Veil
Cost: 2750
+450 Health
+55 Magic Resist

UNIQUE Passive: Grants a spell shield that blocks the next enemy ability. This shield refreshes after no damage is taken from enemy champions for 40 seconds.
UNIQUE Passive: Grants 45 Health Regen per 5 for up to 10 seconds after taking damage from an enemy champion or when the spell shield breaks.

Obviously, if you need MR Take Spirit Visage, and for armor Dead Mans Plate or Randuin's.

3. At this point you have to item slots left, depending on what item you took for you 4th item, it's time to buy the opposite in most cases unless the other team has heavy AD or heavy AP your builds should look like this:

AGAINST HEAVY AD - 3153_32.png3078_32.png3047_32.png3742.png3071_32.png3026_32.png

AGAINST HEAVY AP -  3153_32.png3078_32.png3111_32.png3065_32.png3156_32.png3102_32.png
________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Explanation!

3153_64.png Blade of The Ruined King - This is a great item for Shen if you want to DUEL ! Also gives Gnar a massive damage output when paired with Tri-Force gives you... 3153_32.png3078_32.png TONS OF TONS OF DAMAGE 3078_32.png3153_32.png
Botrk (for short) gives you solid stats [25 AD , 40% attack speed , 10% life steal]  but the ACTIVE and the UNIQUE passive is what makes this item AWESOME:
The active - Deals 10% of target champion's maximum Health (min. 100) as physical damage, heals for the same amount, and steals 25% of the target's Movement Speed for 3 seconds (90 second cooldown).
The passive - Basic attacks deal 8% of the target's current Health in bonus physical damage (max 60 vs. monsters and minions) on hit.

3078_64.png Trinity Force (a.k.a. Tons Of Damage) - Tri-Force is one of the best offensive items (and it would have been the best if it didn't waste the mana you get from it) but it LITTERALLY gives you
3078_32.pngTONS OF DAMAGE3078_32.png Just look at the stats of it ! 30 AD ; 30 AP ; 30% attack speed ; 8% movement speed ;  10% critical hit chance ; 250 health ; 200 mana and 2 very nice UNIQUE passives:
 1. After you hit someone with a basic attack you gain 20 movement speed for 2 seconds and when you kill something you get 60 movement speed for 2 seconds.
 2. After using a spell your next basic attack deals bonus AD equal to 200% of your base AD on hit.

3742.png Dead Man's Plate - A finishing piece to Gnar in the mid game that give great utility and also great tank stats that Gnar benefits from in every way. Move speed to stay mobile and also tank stats to be able to stay in fights longer, and even initiate them.

3065_64.png Spirit Visage - This item gives Gnar EVERYTHING that he needs Health , Magic Resist , Health Regen, Cooldown Reduction... It gives you 400 health and 55 magic resist and it gives you 20 health regeneration per 5 seconds for better sustain and for more soaking up damage in the front lines , plus you get 10% cooldown reduction for more ability spamming. The UNIQUE passive gives you increased self healing , making this item IDEAL if you want to get an offensive item for Gnar like Blade Of The Ruined KingNow the self healing is great in lane too making the Spirit Visage a good mid game item but is inferior to Banshee's Veil late game.

3102_64.png Banshee's Veil - This item is a great Anti AP Poke teams , its USE for Gnar is similar to Spirit Visage but it is not as useful early game as it is great late game making it a great third or fourth item to buy. It gives you 450 health and 55 magic resist and it has 2 UNIQUE passives , the first one gives you a spell shield that completely blocks the first spell to hit you and refreshes after 25 seconds. The second UNIQUE passive gives you +45 health regeneration per 5 seconds FOR 10 seconds when you get hit by any type of damage while the spell shield is down.

3071_64.png Black Cleaver - This item is GREAT on Gnar in mid to late game. Not only does this item give you a chunk of health and damage but also 10% CDR. Not to mention the +10 armor pen and also the passive that reduces enemy champion armor by 5% for 4 seconds helps a lot with the attack speed and slow that gnar's kit come with. Being able to proc this passive pretty quickly and be able to shred through enemies with 3078_32.png and 3153_32.png

Early - Late Game Tactics Back to Top

Early Game Tactics

  • Harass enemies with your Q
  • Make sure to proc your W on enemies whenever possible
  • harass enemies either to the point of them leaving lane or all inning them with ignite ( if you took ignite)
  • If you can't kill them, or are behind in farm make sure to just focus on farming and harass when you can. Farming with Gnar is always first priority given his build is pretty pricey, BUT WORTH IT!
  • If you are getting ganked frequently, make sure to save your e, and always make sure to ward. A ward is only 75g and it will save you giving your lane partner from becoming further ahead then you are.
  • Do not push lane. As you might know it is always a goal to get tower first. Objectives wins games, but as gnar, being able to hold lanes, freeze lanes and farm you are much better off then shoving lane and not being able to farm safely for the first little while of the game. Sure if you can get a 7 minute turret do it, but make sure you farm first.

Warding

Blue Team
Warding Blue Side.png

Now on a single match you probably won't need to ward all of the spots but:
 - The one in the River is very important so that you can see if the enemy jungler is coming.
 - The one in the Bush in the River is important so that you can see if the enemy jungler is there. If you have only one ward this is the best spot to put it.
 - The one in the Tri Bush is important later on when you take your first turret , so that the enemy jungler can't suprise you.
 - The one near the enemy team's Red Buff is not important but is useful , so that either you or your jungler can take their Red Buff.
 - The one in the Bush near their Golems is not very important , but when you are split pushing a lot it is very useful.

Red Team (Purple Team)
Warding Red Side.png

 - The one in the River is very important so that you can see if the enemy jungler is coming. If you have only one ward this is the best place to put it.
 - The one in the Bush in the River is important so that you can see if the enemy jungler is there.
 - The one in the Tri Bush is important later on when you take your first turret , so that the enemy jungler can't suprise you.
 - The one near the enemy team's Blue Buff is not important but is useful , so that either you or your jungler can take their Blue Buff.

Mid-Game Tactics

  • Roam to mid lane, but make sure at this point you are well farmed and or well fed. Do not roam unless you are ahead, or you will fall wayyyyy further behind.
  • Mid game you should have 3078_32.png3158_32.png3153_32.png  which means in both forms you should be able to duel almost anyone on the other team. BUT! be careful, do not over anticipate you can fight someone and end up dying.
  • Again, keep farming and pressure turrets at this point. If you haven't taken top lane already and you are ahead, take tower and split push. You have very high mobility and escapability making you a good split pusher if you properly ward.
  • As Mega Gnar you should be able to with stand a teamfight, or even an odd sided 3v4 or 4v5 fight, so be aware of enemy champs, and if you can land a nice ult you should have the whole fight in your teams favor.

Late Game

  • At Full build, or close to full build you should be able to duel anyone in the game. Your high mobility, damage and passives from items should allow you to shred any champ.
  • Pressure lanes with your regular Gnar form, and initiate fights with Mega Gnar.
  • Be careful to get into fights as regular Gnar, as you are tanky, but not half as tanky as you will be once you transform.
  • As late game Mega Gnar, you are a Giant Tanky Utility whore who does and immense ammount of damage.
  • WARD WARD WARD and get rid of wards.

Gnar in the current Meta Back to Top

Gnar in the Current Top Lane Meta

                                                                        {AS OF PATCH 4.14}

-Now , Gnar is a new champ who has not been in the game long enough to say he is a god tier, or crap tier, but what we can see is he can be a very viable pick for a lot of teams. He is not one of the main top laners in the current meta, as i have seen the top current meta Top laners are:
  • 58_64.png - Renekton is ,debatable, the best top laner at the moment , he has amazing harass so it makes him a LANE BULLY , and he can be a tank and still dish out a lot of damage , either in fights or in 1v1s.

  • 122_64.png - Darius, always a pain to face in lane, Bleed OP, he is very hard to duel with as he has a high DPS cap, and will shred armor even if built tanky.
  • 24_64.png - Jax always was, and always will be one of the best Top Laners if not best champion in the entire League Of Legends, his kit makes him a deadly duelist, and when he gets fed he turns into a fighter/duelist/assassin/GOD
  • 114.png - Another bruiser who is a pain to deal with throughout the entire game fed or not. Pick your fights with fiora, her ult can turn the fight in her favor very fast. But you can take her 1v1 after some items. Poke her down and force her out of lane.
So you are probably asking yourself where is 150_64.png in all of this ? Unfortunately Gnar is not one of the Best TOP Laners in the current Bruiser meta. As he is a great and very fun champion to play, His damage and his kit make him maybe tier 2 or 3. Very unstable damage and a build that costs a hell of a lot of gold. BUT Gnar is a beast when you get ahead or even just a few items
