Summoner Spells Back to Top

Either of these can work ignite gives you more kill pressure and is better against champs with a heal. Exhaust is better against assassins to shut them down. Depends on the team you're against but flash is a must.

Masteries Back to Top

This is my standard for a tanky support. I could see going meditation over merciless for the guaranteed mana as you won't build any mana or regen. I like runic armor for the help with the heal on your q. I could see going insight over perseverance if you wanted more playmaking ability. The rest are pretty standard for a support.

illaoipassive.png You spout tentacles. It's pretty cool but it means you can't wander as well as a good amount of your power comes from these tentacles. Play around them and they hit for a lot of damage but enemies can destroy them and they can dodge them. But they are good for zoning.

illaoiQ.png This hits in a straight line for great damage. It also heals you for each enemy champ hit. So it's great in teamfights but it is missing health so the lower you are the more it heals.

illaoiW.png This gives your auto's bonus damage and some extra range. It also has an autoattack reset. So if you auto and click this you can immediately auto again, which gives you extra damage, and even works on turrets (although you don't get the bonus damage). It also causes nearby tentacles to hit after a delay. So if they aren't paying attention that can do a lot of extra damage.

illaoiE.png This little bugger is the reason Illaoi support works. The whole strategy with her is to grab people with this and kill it as fast as possible. This lets you all in and generally not take much damage because they are a distance away. It lets your adc poke them when they probably aren't in range. Lots of damage that's usually free. So just hit this as much as you can and then all in it with your q and w. Make sure your adc is on the same page to all in the ghost thing cause that can poke them out of lane. Go for the adc but hitting the support isn't bad either. The range isn't huge but still good and pretty hittable with some practice. If they are really close you can get your q or ult to hit both the ghost and them which is tons of damage. The effect after is nice too as it does some damage but don't count on that getting a kill they'll usually be smart enough not to get hit but it hurts an adcs farming ability or is a little while without the enemy support.

illaoiR.png This ability is just fun. Sit in the middle of a teamfight and hit everyone then you just q and w all day. Does ridiculous amounts of damage when everybody's grouped up. You'll be amazed how much it does I've won 3v1's with this when I wasn't even really ahead. Make sure to spam your w after using this cause the cooldown is really low.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Standard tanky support start. Make sure to use the charges generally on cannon or melee minions but make sure you always have one charging otherwise you lose out on gold if you are at full stacks. Your w helps you get these too.

Core Items

This isn't in your recommended but your team still needs vision. Just buy it I always feel so sad when people play non usual supports and then don't buy sightstone always get it as a support.
Upgrade this soon as it gives more gold and healing, but you can wait to go to the end.
Supports usually don't build damage like this but it really works wonderfully with your kit and it is perfect to help your adc and any other ad damage dealers do more. It also has some helpful tank stats.
Any of these could work depending on the matchup and your preference and playstyle. Swifties for fights getting around, mobies for wandering, merc treads for hard cc, and ninja tabi for an all ad team comp.
I usually go eye as you get an extra item slot and I'm not a huge fan of the face of the mountain active, it's just ok. The only reason I would go for it is to get ruby sightstone and the reduced cooldown on active items. As you can get a bunch of those and then its worth it. But you do have to remember to use active items if you usually forget it's not worth it.
These are interesting and definitely not for everyone. But they work very well at split pushing while you teamfight which illaoi is great at. It gives good tank stats too. Make sure to put the zz rot up the lane and in the side lanes. You want this to push and get towers while everyone on your team (and their team) is elsewhere don't put it mid, or in a lane you are all pushing as it's effect is minimal then and it is going to die quickly. Make sure to pay attention to zz's range as it should be in range of the tower you want to kill. Banner make sure to put in a side lane on either the cannon or a ranged minion as they won't die. But this can be killed if they have a big minion wave pushing. Also she has no ap ratios so that is completely lost on her but still a fun item!
    All good tank items.
All good with a specific purpose.
I like this one as it lets you tank for your adc and gives some nice stats and healing.

Situational Items

After black cleaver and your vision and gold items you want tank items. Do NOT build the same items every game. The tank items you build depend on the matchup. If you're against a leblanc mid, a corki adc, and a mao top don't build armor build mr. Go off of who is fed and what counters them. Certain items are good against autoattackers like thornmail or frozen heart, get those if they have a trynd or a fed autoattacking adc etc. Banshees is good against a strong one ability hit like a blitz hook etc, although you being in the center of a team sounds like a good time to ult and do some damage ;). Basically adapt to the game you're in and your playstyle. When you get actives make sure to use them as they do help.

Your other advantage as with any "weird" pick is that people won't have played against it, probably don't know her range and damage as well as another more common support. Once you play her and know that stuff that gives you an inherent leg up.
