Summoner Spells Back to Top

12.png Teleport- required for top lane. Since Illaoi draws a lot of jungle pressure, you will need it to get back to lane (especially pre 6). It will also enable you to split push late game (and teleport for fights or objectives, such as baron).

IMPORTANT: using 12.png on a illaoipassive.png can cause you to get stuck inside the wall! Try to avoid if possible.

4.png Flash- best summoner spell in the game. Crucial to escape early game ganks, reposition in teamfights, and connect to squishy targets.

New Runes Back to Top

Primary: Inspiration

Kleptomancy.png?width=32 Kleptomancy- after hitting a champion by using illaoiw.png (or any other ability followed by an auto attack), grants gold or a random item.
IMPORTANT: targets grabbed by illaoie.png count as a champion, and will proc Kleptomancy.
Common loot from Kleptomancy (to view item descriptions, click here):
  • Pre 6- sly sack of gold, pilfered health potions, mana potions, pilfered potion of rouge
  • Post 6- sly sack of gold, looted oracle's extract, travel size elixers (iron, sorcery, wrath), elixer of skill

Magical%20Footwear.png?width=32 Magical Footwork- gives free boots (300g value), and also gives +10 movement speed. While this prevents you from buying boots before 10 minutes, it's more important to focus on finishing your first core item.
NOTE: "takedowns" are considered either a kill OR assist.

8345.png?width=32 Biscuit Delivery- can be used in lane to recover from low mana, or sold.
NOTE: maximum mana is added even if the biscuit is sold.

Time%20Warp%20Tonic.png?width=32 Time Warp Tonic- makes all consumables last longer, and grants 5% bonus movement speed while under the effect of a consumable (high up-time due to items from Kleptomancy.png?width=32).

Secondary: Domination

(Bonus 13 AD)

Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact- procs off illaoiw.png, granting very high uptime. Lethality is a decent stat on Illaoi (as all her damage is physical), but is never purchased on items due to better options existing.

Ravenous%20Hunter.png?width=32 Ravenous Hunter- works as a miniature 3812.png, granting healing on damage dealt (but only to champions).
NOTE: "takedowns" are considered either a kill OR assist.

Situational Secondary: Resolve

(Bonus 145 health)

Take secondary: resolve into ranged matchups where you will be poked.

Second%20Wind.png?width=32 Second Wind- recovers a portion of your missing health each time you take damage. Strong against ranged champions that will be poking you constantly.

Revitalize.png?width=32 Revitalize- increases healing, doubled below 40% hp. Synergies well with illaoipassive.png's healing.

Ability Basics

illaoipassive.png Prophet of an Elder God- spawns a tentacle on a moderate cooldown (20 seconds level 1, down to 12 seconds at level 18). Cannot spawn a tentacle if another one is nearby. Each time a illaoipassive.png hits an enemy champion, you will be healed for 5% of your missing health.

illaoiq.png Tentacle Smash- a directional skillshot on a short delay, damages all units within its hitbox. Very useful for farming, as it can one shot the caster minions after level 10.

illaoiw.png Harsh Lesson- an auto attack reset ability, deals bonus damage based off target's max health. Additionally, causes all nearby tentacles to slam at your target.

illaoie.png Test of Spirit- a "hook" like ability that grabs a copy of the first champion hit, called a spirit, and pulls it in front of you.
The spirit acts as a champion for spell effects, and will proc Kleptomancy.png?width=32
Damaging the spirit transfers a lesser amount to the actual champion.
Additionally, nearby illaoipassive.png will automatically slam the spirit (each illaoipassive.png has an independent cooldown for performing this).
If you kill the spirit or the enemy champion runs out of range, the spirit will disappear and the champion will become slowed for a large amount. Additionally, the champion will spawn free illaoipassive.png, and nearby illaoipassive.png will slam the champion for a short duration.
However, the spirit has a limited duration, and the effect will end if you can't kill it quick enough. Remaining duration is reduced when you take damage.

illaoir.png Leap of Faith- deals a small amount of damage to nearby champions, and summons additional temporary illaoipassive.png per champion hit (if you hit a spirit grabbed with illaoie.png, it will also spawn one). Additionally, illaoipassive.png will slam twice as fast, and cannot be killed by enemies. Finally, your illaoiw.png cooldown is reduced by half, allowing you to deal large amounts of damage.

Situational Items

    Enemy has physical damage

Starting

2033.png Corrupting Potion- provides strong laning presence, potion effect amplified by the Inspiration rune tree.

1054.png2003.png Doran's Shield- regain health and survive laning against ranged opponents.

Core

3071.png Black Cleaver- a strong, cheap item that synergies well with Illaoi's kit. Due to all her damage being physical, the armor pen comes in handy, especially against tanks. The movement speed fixes part of her mobility issue. Finally, due to the interaction between resistances and health, 3071.png increases the possible damage transferred from illaoie.png to the enemy champion. Build this item first against tanks, third against all other matchups.

3812.png Death's Dance- this item greatly benefits Illaoi's AD scaling ratios, as well as providing a high amount of sustain. Build this item first into most matchups, but third against tanks.

3053.png Sterak's Gage- taking large amounts of damage over a short period of times activates a shield (and gives you tenacity), preventing yourself from being bursted down. This shield can keep you alive long enough to take advantage of the healing from illaoipassive.png slams and 3812.png. Unless a situational item is needed, build this fourth.

Boots

3047.png Ninja Tabi- standard boots (I build these about 75% of the time). Build second, after first item (3071.png or 3812.png).

3111.png Mercury's Threads- only buy if the enemy team has a high amount of CC (I build these about 25% of the time). Build second, after first item (3071.png or 3812.png).

Situational (for physical damage)

3026.png Guardian Angel- a strong item that greatly increases your teamfight presence. For a balanced build, build this fifth.

3075.png Thornmail- good against champions with lots of healing (that require auto attacks), such as 266.png122.png24.png57.png75.png2.png48.png23.png19.png, and any ADC.

Situational (for magic damage)

3065.png Spirit Visage- strong all around item for magic resist. Increases healing and synergizes well with illaoipassive.png and 3812.png. For a balanced build, build this sixth.

3194.png Adaptive Helmet- reduces magic damage taken from repeat effects. Strong against 17.png50.png68.png96.png, and 69.png.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Medium: 266.png has moderate self healing, and aatroxpassive.png allows him to revive, negating much of your burst. His early game is very strong, and if he lands a aatroxq.png, you will be in trouble.

Notes:
Harass level 1 with illaoiw.png.
CAUTION: 266.png has an incredibly strong level 2-3. Back off and play safe. Use illaoiq.png to farm.
If 266.png uses aatroxq.png to dive towards you, simply grab him with illaoie.png

VS

Akali

Easy
Easy: 84.png has a weak early game, and post 6 her damage can't compare to Illaoi.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
When 84.png appears out of her akalismokebomb.png, punish her with a illaoiq.png or illaoiw.png.
When 84.png uses akalishadowdance.png to leap at you, simply grab her with illaoie.png

VS

Camille

Easy
Easy: 164.png will try to poke you all lane with camillew.png, but poses little of a threat. If she decides to engage, you deal more damage.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png. Play around the long cooldown of camillepassive.png (16 seconds at level 1).
Be extremely careful for early ganks, as 164.png has strong gank assist.
When 164.png uses camillew.png, simply illaoiw.png (about the same range) and win the trade.

When 164.png uses camillee.png to vault at you, simply grab her with illaoie.png

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Easy: 31.png has a weak laning phase, and can be easily abused at all points of the game. Illaoi's illaoiw.png scales off the target's max health, and 31.png stacks health.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
Watch out for the high burst of feast.png. Illaoi's self healing works best when she is low on health, but this ability can execute you from deceptively high health.

VS

Darius

Easy

Easy: 122.png is slow and has telegraphed movement, allowing your illaoipassive.png to pound away at him.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png, but don't get drawn into an extended fight. Hit him with illaoiw.png, then back off. Once the cooldown is back, hit him again.
When 122.png uses his dariuscleave.png, quickly illaoiw.png to get on top of him, avoiding the blade of his axe (and taking 35% of the damage).

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Easy: 36.png has high regen, but has little laning presence. Dodge infectedcleavermissilecast.png by hiding behind minions, and you will easily win.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.

VS

Fiora

Hard

Hard: 114.png has incredibly high mobility, a strong early game, and her fioraw.png can be used to block your illaoie.png.

Notes:
Only harass with illaoiw.png when her fioraq.png is on cooldown.
Play safe and farm, using illaoiq.png to safely kill creeps.
If you use illaoiw.png while fioraw.png is active, it will deal no damage, but illaoipassive.png will still slam.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Hard: 41.png has a safe laning phase, and you cannot punish him. In addition, his late game is much stronger than yours.

Notes:
Harass with illaoiw.png when 41.png walks up too far (or tries to melee attack a creep).
Use illaoiw.png to last hit his gangplanke.png, when possible.

VS

Garen

Easy

Easy: 86.png  is extremely hard to kill, but will pose little threat. Farm minions and outscale him quickly.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png. Your illaoiw.png cooldown is 4 seconds, while garenq.png has an 8 second cooldown. Abuse this window to bully him.

Look out for garenw.png. It gives an incredible amount of damage reduction.

VS

Gnar

Hard

Hard: 150.png is an extreme lane bully, and will poke and zone you. Your only option is to farm with illaoiq.png, and hope you can survive laning phase.

Notes:
Take illaoiq.png level 1, and play very defensively. Farm and avoid taking too much harass.

150.png's incredible speed and small hitbox in mini form makes it hard to land illaoie.png. Wait until he goes mega.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

Hard: 74.png has strong zoning and poke, as well as lots of CC. Your only option is to farm with illaoiq.png, and hope you can survive laning phase.

Notes:
Take illaoiq.png level 1, and play very defensively. Farm and avoid taking too much harass.
heimerdingerq.png will block your illaoie.png, be careful!
heimerdingerq.png usually take two illaoiq.pngs to kill.

VS

Irelia

Medium

Medium: 39.png  is very mobile, and it will be hard to land illaoiq.png or illaoie.png. She has surprisingly high sustain (with her ireliahitenstyle.png), and this lane usually turns into a farming lane.

Notes:
At level 1, if she starts ireliagatotsu.png, harass with illaoiw.png as much as you want.
However, if she starts ireliaequilibriumstrike.png, be wary of getting stunned inside the minion wave.
Try to use illaoie.png defensively. If you miss, she has a large opening, and can run you down and kill you. A good time to use it is during the travel animation of ireliagatotsu.png, since she dashes in a straight line (at you) and can't dodge.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

Medium: 59.png doesn't pose much of a threat, but miss illaoie.png and he can quickly engage on you. He also has strong gank assist, and being ganked pre-6 will often result in a death.

Notes:
Harass level 1 with illaoiw.png, as 59.png has a weak level 1. Be extremely careful about 59.png getting level 2 first, as his jarvanivdemacianstandard.pngjarvanivdragonstrike.png combo will be lethal if you're still level 1.
While traveling with jarvanivdemacianstandard.pngjarvanivdragonstrike.png , 59.png is susceptible to a free illaoie.png, as he moves straight in a line and can't dodge.

VS

Jax

Medium

Medium: 24.png has only one tool to fight 420.png, and that is his jaxcounterstrike.png. The rest of his kit doesn't pose a threat.

Notes:
If 24.png starts with jaxcounterstrike.png, try to bait out its long cooldown, then abuse him as much as possible in those 16 seconds (with illaoiw.png).
Avoid using illaoiw.png while jaxcounterstrike.png is up, as it will deal no damage and illaoipassive.png WILL NOT slam.
If he uses jaxleapstrike.png on you, it's a good opportunity for a free illaoie.png, as he jumps in a straight line and can't dodge.

VS

Jayce

Hard

Hard: 126.png is the hardest counter to 420.png. He will poke you out of existence, and landing a illaoie.png will be especially hard (due to his ridiculously high movement). Even if you can successfully pick a fight, he will simply jaycethunderingblow.png and walk away.

Notes:
Start  illaoiq.png. Try to farm as much as you can. Max illaoiq.png first.
Hide in the lane bushes to avoid being poked. You can illaoiq.png out of the bush without giving vision.

VS

Kayle

Hard

Hard: 10.png has a weak early game, but will become untouchable as the game goes on. judicatorreckoning.png will slow you, judicatordivineblessing.png will speed her up, judicatorrighteousfury.png will kill you from range, and judicatorintervention.png will negate all of your burst (and by extension, negate your illaoir.png).

Notes:
Start illaoiw.png and play around the long cooldown on judicatorrighteousfury.png. Without judicatorrighteousfury.png, she does no damage and can be freely bullied.
Max illaoiq.png and revert to safely farming post level 6.

VS

Kennen

Hard

Hard: 85.png is untouchable in lane, and will shut you down in teamfights. Even if you manage to start a favorable fight, he will stun you and walk away with kennenlightningrush.png.

Notes:
Start and max illaoiq.png. Farm as much as you can without taking free harass.

VS

Kled

Easy

Easy: 240.png will be weaker than you at all points of the game. When he loses his kledpassive.png, his movement speed drops to extremely low levels, making it easy to land illaoie.png (and most illaoipassive.png slams will land).

Notes:
Harass early game with illaoiw.png.
Post 6, warn your team when he recalls. He could be lane ganking with kledr.png.

VS

Malphite

Easy

Easy: 54.png will do nothing in lane. He is a pushover, and will allow you to farm large amounts of gold (minions and Kleptomancy.png?width=32). Make sure to constantly harass and zone him, otherwise he will make plays on the map (using ufslash.png and 12.png).

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.

VS

Maokai

Easy

Easy: 57.png will do nothing in lane. He is a pushover, and will allow you to farm large amounts of gold (minions and Kleptomancy.png?width=32).

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
Be careful not to waste illaoie.png while 57.png is using maokaiw.png, as he is untargetable.
Abuse him as much as possible before 57.png recalls. Once he buys armor items, it becomes exponentially harder to kill 57.png.

VS

Nasus

Medium

Medium: 75.png is (mostly) an easy lane, since all he can do is farm and try to survive. However, he can gain nasusq.png stacks by killing your illaoipassive.png. This means you will have to defend your tentacles and bully 75.png as much as possible, or he will become a late game monster.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
Be careful at level 6, as nasusr.png is extremely strong.
Defend your illaoipassive.png! Don't let 75.png walk up and nasusq.png without punishing him.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

Easy: 111.png will do nothing in lane. He is a pushover, and will allow you to farm large amounts of gold (minions and Kleptomancy.png?width=32).

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
Due to 111.png being extremely weak, it is easy to turn a 1v2 if the enemy jungler ganks. Keep 111.png low on health, stuck under his tower, struggling for farm.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Medium: 2.png has an incredible early game and strong poke. However, he falls off extremely hard middle game. Make it through laning phase by farming and win late game.

Notes:
Play extremely safe early game! Start illaoiq.png and don't pick a fight!
Avoid pushing to his tower. Being far away from your own tower will enable 2.png to run you down with olafaxethrowcast.png.

VS

Ornn

Easy

Easy: 516.png has a strong laning phase centered around ornnw.png. However, learning to trade around its long cooldown will result in a win.

Notes:
Harass with illaoiw.png when ornnw.png is on cooldown.
All of 516.png abilities are telegraphed, meaning you can easily tell what he's going to do. Use this to land free illaoie.png, especially when he is in the animation for ornnw.png or ornne.png.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Hard: 80.png is a lane bully that will make your life tough. He will crush you early game, then roam and start influencing the map.

Notes:
Start with illaoiq.png and farm.
Hide in the bushes to avoid taking free pantheonq.png.
If you use illaoiw.png while pantheonpassive.png is up, it will deal no damage but will proc illaoipassive.png.
Post 6, alert your team when 80.png recalls. More than likely he will try to lane gank with pantheonrjump.png.

VS

Poppy

Medium

Medium: 78.png is weak in lane, and should allow you to farm up quite nicely. However, she will shut you down in teamfights. poppyw.png blocks illaoiw.png, and you will be rendered mostly useless.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
Try to gain as big of a lead as possible during laning phase. 78.png will be useful in teamfights no matter how weak she is, but you will need to be farmed up and fed.

VS

Renekton

Easy

Easy: 58.png wants to get an early game lead and snowball the lane. However, 420.png is stronger and scales better.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
58.png will gain renektonpassive.png from your illaoipassive.png. Defend them if possible.
Be extremely careful if he hits 6 first. renektonreignofthetyrant.png is deceptively strong.

VS

Rengar

Medium

Medium: 107.png has high burst and high mobility, two things that are deadly for 420.png. However, 107.png is easy to play around if you track his ferocity and fight him away from bushes.

Notes:
At level 1-3, don't get caught in a fight when he has high ferocity.
When he jumps out of the lane bushes to hit a minion, use illaoiw.png to harass.
If he jumps out of the bush at you, land  illaoie.png for free, as he jumps in a straight line and cannot dodge.

VS

Riven

Easy

Easy: 92.png has extremely long cooldowns early game, and, while her mobility is very high, it's mostly telegraphed, meaning you can easily tell what she's going to do. Her burst and sustained damage is also less than 420.png.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png, playing around her long cooldowns.
When she goes to engage on you, with riventricleave.png or rivenfeint.png, look to land a free illaoie.png.

VS

Rumble

Medium

Medium: 68.png has high damage, and can safely farm with rumblegrenade.png. It will be impossible to kill him, and will turn into a farm lane. However, he can make a bigger impact in teamfights with rumblecarpetbomb.png.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png, but watch out for rumbleflamethrower.png's high damage.
rumbleflamethrower.png will cause your illaoie.png's spirit to vanish quickly, as the duration is reduced by instances of damage (and rumbleflamethrower.png hits many times).

VS

Shen

Easy

Easy: 98.png trades a weak laning phase for a strong ult, shenr.png, which can snowball other parts of the map, usually bot. However, if you crush 98.png and keep him low on health/under his tower, he won't have the chance to utilize shenr.png.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
shenw.png will stop illaoiw.png's damage, but your illaoipassive.png will still slam.
If he tries to taunt you with shene.png, use this chance to land a free illaoie.png.

VS

Singed

Easy
Easy: if  27.png decides to lane, enjoy free farm and free Kleptomancy.png?width=32 procs. If 27.png decides to proxy farm, simply wave clear, as you will be stronger late game.

Notes:
You won't be able to illaoiw.png while standing on megaadhesive.png.
poisontrail.png will make your illaoie.png's spirit quickly run out, as the duration is reduced by instances of damage (and poisontrail.png hits very rapidly).

VS

Sion

Easy

Easy: 14.png is a poke oriented tank, but can't hold up in a fight.

Notes:
At level 1, watch your top side buff (blue side = blue, red side = red). 14.png can easily kill it using his sionpassive.png.
Harass early with illaoiw.png, but avoid getting caught in a charged sionq.png.
While charging sionq.png, use illaoie.png on the immobile 14.png for a free hit.
Once 6, watch out for 14.png's recalls, as he's likely looking to roam with sionr.png.

VS

Swain

Hard

Hard:

Notes:

Champion reworked in 8.3. I will update this section after I gain experience in the match up.

Assume difficulty is still hard, as 50.png still has a ranged advantage as well as a mobile kit.

VS

Teemo

Hard

Hard: 17.png is an untouchable lane bully that will destroy you. He will poke you, win short trades (with blindingdart.png), run away (with movequick.png, if he's ever in danger), and make ganking him difficult (with teemorcast.png).

Notes:
Start and max illaoiq.png, try to farm if possible.
Hide in bushes to reduce being poked.

VS

Trundle

Easy

Easy: 48.png has a moderate early game and a strong lategame. While 420.png will go even in laning phase, she will outshine 48.png after level 6.

Notes:
Be cautious about using illaoiw.png, as he will likely trundletrollsmash.png you at the same time. Try illaoiw.pngand quickly walk out of range.
Don't pick a fight before 6, as you will lose any long exchange.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Easy: 23.png, while particularly hard to kill, won't pose much of a threat in the lane. During laning phase, he will farm and heal up with tryndamereq.png, which gives plenty of opportunities to proc Kleptomancy.png?width=32

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
If he uses tryndamerew.png avoid a fight, as it drastically lowers your AD.

VS

Urgot

Hard

Medium: 6.png has the opportunity to poke, but must enter (essentially) melee range to be effective.

If 6.png is playing defensively and just poking, the lane will mostly be farming (and avoiding the poke). However, if 6.png plays aggressively and gets in your face, you will be able to trade and possibly kill him.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png if possible, but only if 6.png walks up too close.
urgote.png has a long animation time, giving the opportunity to land a free illaoie.png.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Easy: 62.png is a high damage, lehality based assassin that excels in killing squishies. However, his notoriously bad laning phase makes him easy to abuse.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
The clone from monkeykingdecoy.png will block illaoie.png!

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Medium: 157.png is extremely high mobility and can block illaoie.png using yasuowmovingwall.png, which makes him a serious threat. However, if 157.png fights away from minions (meaning he can't make use of yasuodashwrapper.png) you can win 1v1.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png, especially level 1 (before he gets yasuodashwrapper.png).
Don't use illaoie.png while yasuowmovingwall.png is off cooldown, as it will be blocked and leave you mostly defenseless.
If 157.png uses his yasuodashwrapper.png on you, it's an opportunity to land a free illaoie.png while he's dashing. However, this requires a fast reaction and can be tricky.

VS

Yorick

Medium

Medium: 83.png is good at split pushing, but has a notoriously bad early game. Dodge yoricke.png, which forces all his yorickpassive.png to attack you, and you will win every trade. When it comes to mid/late game, don't allow him to split push.

Notes:
Harass early with illaoiw.png.
yorickpassive.png have extremely high AOE resistance, making damage from illaoipassive.png and illaoiq.png less effective in killing them.
yorickpassive.png and yorickr.png both block your illaoie.png. However, yorickw.png DOES NOT block illaoie.png.

General Gameplay Back to Top

Early Game
Get to lane early to set spawn three tentacles. One in mid lane bush, one in close bush, one on the tip of river's edge.

fkxORl2.png

Use illaoiw.png as much as possible to proc Kleptomancy.png?width=32. Try to do so in range of a illaoipassive.png for extra damage.
Be extremely cautious of level 3 ganks (usually around 2:45-3:00), as 420.png is immobile.
The best time to try for a illaoie.png is when the enemy is last hitting, as you know they will be walking up the minion.
See specific matchups for more information about laning phase.

Middle Game
If your team is grouping, generally it's best to follow them (for objectives, mostly dragon/tier 1-2 towers).
If your team is not grouping, and you're stronger than your opponent, stay in your lane and push.
If your team is not grouping, and you're weaker than your opponent, stay in your lane and farm.

Late Game
Look to set up illaoipassive.png around key objectives, such as dragon, baron, and towers.
Try for as many illaoie.png as possible, since a successful hit will take >50% of the enemy's hp. Use this to poke while both teams are dancing, sieging, or defending.
While 420.png is a decent splitpusher, she usually is stronger if you can group. Many of her weaknesses, such as no cc/easily kited, can be remedied by your teammates.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Using illaoie.png on a target that is dashing towards you will guarantee a hit.

illaoipassive.png can't spawn within a set distance to another illaoipassive.png, meaning you can stop producing illaoipassive.png by staying near an existing one (useful for 75.png).

illaoipassive.png become deactivated and reduce to 1 hp (from the standard 2 hp) when you are too far from them (~2000 range). Enemies can see if a illaoipassive.png is active or not THROUGH FOG OF WAR, meaning they can also see where you are (within ~2000 range estimate) if you have a illaoipassive.png nearby.

While casting illaoir.png (and are mid air), you can 4.pngillaoir.png will correctly hit the area you flashed to, allowing you to gap close onto squishies.
