Summoner Spells Back to Top

I usually go for the flash and ignite for higher killpotensial, the true damage works against almost any midchampion and could be the difference between snowballing and losing a lane. But still I wouldn't leave out the teleport.


Teleport on the other hand is a lot stronger if you think it's going to be a hard laningphase, or if you are going to splitpush a lot. Irelia can be really good at splitpushing aslong as you make sure your team is holding the enemy team away from the lane you are pushing. With 3078.png and 3124.png you take take down minions and tower insanely fast + your high movementspeed makes you get away easy. Just make sure you put out a ward or two and your pretty safe.

At the moment is Thunderlord insanely strong, which makes any masterybuild go with that. But still the underneath is discussable. From Ferocity I go Double Edged Sword over Feast, because 20 health every 25 sec is really not strong at all, and 3% extra damage from DES(??), well that can come in handy. I also go for Vampirism over Natural Talent because Vampirism stacks very well early with your ireliahitenstyle.png and again the 3% lifesteal from runes. Last the last from Ferocity, I take Oppressor. I do that because of early when I have no killes, the damage increases when I stun or slow someone with my E, and lategame is 2 seconds stun with 2,5% extra damage a lot when you have 3078.png and 3124.png. Bounty hunter is also strong, but you would relie on getting them kills ASAP.


For Cunning Wanderer is better if you know you are going to splitpush a lot, but I usually have a combination of splitpushing and fighting, so I prefer Savagery. I also go for Assassin because of the 1,5% bonusdamage, many smal damage %, but when they stack up together, the damage adds up pretty well. The rest of the runes I do hope is obvious why I chose.

First off I pick Q in lvl 1 vs ranged, and E vs melee, or sometimes you can just wait to upgrade either of them until u actually need one of them.

Here you want to stack your E and Q to get to the snowballing. Why wouldn't I upgrade W? Like all the other TOP-lane guides? W is extremely nice to have when you need the sustain, but midlane it's all in or nothing. You don't go on 238.png half-in, either you fight him or he fights you. So you'll need burstdamage, not sustaindamage. Another reason is that we already have 5% lifesteal + your lvl 1 W + 2033.png, and that is a LOT of sustain early. 

I also upgrade the Q second (instead of W) because of the cooldown. It's only a couple of seconds in max-level + 10% CDR from 3078.png, and stacks up with Sheen. Strong damage and easy to catch up to your targets. 


PS: Go with W early if you're having a hard time, or if you know from the start that your matchup is going to be ruff.

Starting Items

    Standard start - Any matchup

Core Items

    Insane 1v1 sniping, schreds turrets and really strong when getting in to teamfights. You go in JUST after the fight started, to just tear them all down when you're not being focused
    Tanky Irelia is HARD to take down. With your high mobility you can survive almost anything and still do tons of damage. Only do this if your team have no tank.

Situational Items

    Strong, but not sure it's strong enough. I would prefer Spirit Visage over this, but depends on the team you are playing against.
    Depending on how your game is going
    Can be swap out with Frozen Heart if you're going tanky and you have enough armor. Good to chaise down targets and you use your armor and MR more efficient because of the high HP you get from this item.
    Strong counter-AD item, can be swap out with Dead Mans Plate. I just prefer the DMP because of it's high mobility.

I'm going to get into details with this guide later, but here is a tip on how I build Irelia mid.

I always start with 2033.png.

My second item will always be 3078.png, where I try to stay in lane until I get 1050g to get my 3057.png. If there would happen anything that would make me not have enough gold for the Sheen I will just buy 1028.png and a 1036.png, which I convert into 3044.png next back and then go for the Sheen second instead. You can buy 1001.png meanwhile, but I usually only do this if you need to dodge spells or if I just got a bit gold leftover after buying the parts I need for my trinity.


-> 3006.png comes right after trinity

-> 3124.png is what really makes Irelia do the damage she do. But don't rush this if you're already having a hard time mid. You can also buy 3211.png or 1031.png/1011.png , just to survive while building up your 3124.png

The rest of the items really depends on which champions you're playing against.

Lots of AD: 3047.png is viable, you get lots of AS even without your 3006.png
               : 3742.png, even with the nerf from 600 to 500hp, it's still really strong with the bonus movementspeed
               : 3110.png is actually very nice to have, you never need to think about mana again, 20% CDR (which makes your ultimate CD REALLY short) + the bonus 90 armor.
               : 3143.png, strong as always, slow the enemies even more. NOONE ESCAPES IRELIA.

Lots of AP: 3111.png, same with the armorboots. Also makes you have insanly high tenacity, you can get out of any stun in no time!
               : 3156.png, insanely strong ATM. The passive is now empowered, which makes u schred your enemies even faster.
               : 3065.png, you should always get this one if the enemy team have a lot of AP. This item is so strong on Irelia. The 20% increased healing, 70 MR + 500 HP AND 10% CDR, what more could you want??? 


Usually I go like this: 3078.png -> 3006.png -> 3124.png -> 3742.png -> 3156.png -> You should've won by this time, but if you're still ingame, I would go for an Item depending on the champions you play against.

Medium
I hate laning against Akali as her shroud can be popped to avoid her W however she is really squishy, i really recommend having a pink ward or redtrinket after the first back just incase, if you do pop your W before hers (only if u cant bait her shroud otherwise) stun her auto q before she can put her shroud it will chunk her nicely. 

You may start with hexdrinker and max E for maximum burstdamage.

VS

Gragas

Easy

Not too hard; your burst is higher, and you can easily dodge his barrels with your Q. Try to trade him as soon as all your spells is up. Care for ganks if you push him.

VS

Katarina

Easy

Be aggressive! Hold her in the dark and when she comes to take a minion, use your E, then W, then double basicattack to activate your Thunderlord, GG.

Remember that if she is level 6, only use your E when she uses her ultimate or if you have a minion closeby that you could jump to. You could also use it if you feel confident that you kill her fast enough that her ult won't make any difference.

Normal build and normal spellorder.

Malzahar

Medium

Malzahar has strong damage when he gets his whole combo, but with your high mobility, it will not be that hard to escape him. Try to not get him to potion you with his E(alzaharmaleficvisions.png), and dodge his Q(alzaharcallofthevoid.png) and you'll be fine. Malzahar has NO mobility, so chaising him down will be easy.

On this matchup you can always go with something like 3155.png or even 3156.png early, to not take to much damage. 

I would still go standard damagebuild but getting the 3156.png early to survive when fighting.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

This guy is just a pain in the ass early on, but you should play safe and start cloth 5 as you dont really need the mana sustain from flask since u will avoid trading him, a good time to fight him is lvl 6 as he doesnt really have a clear ultimate that helps him in an all in


you can rush tabi if it makes you feel any better, however the sooner you get a sheen, the easier you can all in him

other than that try not to blow your q on him when his passive is up as it will block your q.

Normal build and normal spellorder, except cloth 5.

VS

Swain

Medium

Can be fairly hard to kill if you do not bring ignite unless you kill him before lvl 6, and snowball that way


Generally he's just going to look to push you and harass you under your turret so try to avoid that.

Max W first for sustain, unless u get ahead.

VS

Talon

Easy

Be aggressive! Hold him in the dark and when he comes to take a minion, use your E, then W, then double basicattack to activate your Thunderlord, GG. Just stay away from his W(talonrake.png), and you'll be fine. Also do remember that you can hit him with your ultimate when he is invisible with his ultimate.

Always care for ganks tho.

Normal build and normal spellorder.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Be aggressive! Hold him in the dark and when he comes to take a minion, use your E, then W, then double basicattack to activate your Thunderlord, GG. He can't do anything

I really did this guide because I just love playing Irelia and I found out that there was no guides out here with Irelia mid. I first started out by getting 0/5 with her W/L, but then, when preseason started everything changed. I have now got 15/5 W/L the last 20 games and still going up. I know my elo is low, but I guess this guide is more for Gold and below who wants to learn how to play her. I will come with more updates when I get more time with her.

Just do what most meleeplayers do, let them push, stay safe and farm up. You engage when they engage, to even out the damage done AND you often engage them to dodge one of their spells. (Depends very much on whom you are playing against)

VS RANGED: Wait for lvl 3, jump to a lowhealth minion with your Q, for them to jump to your targeted champion. Try to first bait out one of their spells or CC's before going in.

VS MELEE: Try to harass them as much as possible, try to freeze the lane and stun them and harass them when they try to get minions. Just care for ganks. Remember to always put out wards, included pinks in-case you're jungler wants to get a peace of your enemy.

Most of the times you wait for them to engage to get your stun, you E + W + Double AA, your Thunderlord hits them and their health should be dropped down by 30-40%. When they get below 50%, you can use their minions to your advantage. When they get close to a low health minion, you jump to the minion, E the enemy, activate W, double AA. When they then start to run away (or fight you), just use you're Q (and in some cases ignite) to finish them. Enemy = Dead

This time of the game, Irelia is really powerful. When you have your trinity and rageblade your damageoutput is crazy! Just try to pick them off 1v1, you can most likely take anyone 1v1. Find the squishiest targets and just pown them down. Try not to be cough of guard, you're still a squishy target yourself. Get your team to start pushing (PS: You shred turrets guys, you can even use your ultimate (if you really need that turret to go down fast) to get your active on sheen for 200% Damage on your next AA)
