Summoner Spells Back to Top

For Top Irelia- Flash Teleport is a MUST.

For Mid Irelia- You can go either Flash Ignite OR Flash Teleport if you feel like being more of a team player and you want more map presence, in my opinion taking Teleport over Ignite mid is almost always a good idea, unless you're sure you can kill you opponent easily with the help of Ignite.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Pretty self-explanatory. Fervor of Battle is the best mastery on her, but if you feel like switching things up, Grasp of the Undying is fine as well.

Against hard matchups, (Pantheon, Volibear, Renekton, etc.) I recommend maxing E first then W, giving you a longer stun and more time to run away.

Level 1, you can take either Q or E, depends on the matchup.
Almost against all the melee champions, you take E level 1, while against ranged opponents you take Q level 1.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Some Irelia mains will probably disagree with me, but I do believe that the Doran's Blade start is the ideal start against most matchups
But if you want a bit more sustain in a cost of less damage, life steal and HP, you can start corrupting potion instead

Core Items

My favorite build, no doubt about it. Goes well against mixed damage teams. Rush Trinity Force>Boots of choice>Spirit/Omen depends on what you need more, then its your choice
Against heavy AD teams. Rush Trinity Force>Boots of choice>Omen/Dead Man's Plate/Frozen Heart and fill the build with whatever item you feel will be usefull
Straight out troll, do not try this in ranked, i usually take this in normals. Trinity Force>Boots of choice>Youmuu's>Duskblade>Black Cleaver>Do whatever ♥
Against heavy AP damage comp. Trinity Force>Boots of Choice>Maw if ahead, otherwise go Spirit, then complete the build with whatever else you need
Don't want to get bursted too fast because they got a fed carry? Get this! Trinity Force>Boots Of Choice>Sterak's Gage/Omen>Complete the build with whatever else you need

Situational Items

Not always the best choice, but sometimes its just too good
    Great against heavy aa teams
An Item I sometimes buy against hard AP matchups, like Tahm Kench

My build is constantly changing due to constant Meta shifts and items updates, nerfs and buffs, I'll try to update the guide every patch if I feel it would be necessary.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

lvl 1-4 you win most of the time and he shouldn't be a problem, but once he gets lvl 6 and a life steal item, be careful.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

If by any chance you face Cassiopeia top, I suggest you to play as safe as you can. Cass is known for her extreme zoning potential and she WILL give you hard time farming. Try to farm as much as you can, ask for ganks, and stay most of the time under tower, if you feel like you cant do even that, try to roam and help other lanes.

I suggest to start with Doran's Shield and a potion for your starting items OR Corrupting Potion.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Easy matchup. Try to fight him when his abillities is on Cooldown, because sometimes he will use his Q, W and even R on minions, leaving him completely vulnerable, if he's playing a bit smarter than the average Cho'Gath, still try to fight him and turn on your W before his W, and poke him as much as you can before retreating.

VS

Darius

Medium

This guy is can be pretty tough at times. Never fight him pre level 6 and without a Sheen or a Phage, he will win without a doubt. Until then, farm safely, ask for ganks, and try not to die.

Cloth armor and potions start recommended, but you can go for a Corrupting Potion as well.

VS

Diana

Easy

Pretty easy matchup, you're tankier, deal more damage after level 6 and with a Sheen, and if she will ever will try to fight you 1v1, stun her, and attack her until she retreats.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Levels 1-5 you can fight him very easily if you won't get Q'd much. After he gets level 6 and Bami's Cinder, he's kinda tanky and deals quite a lot of DPS, but you can still fight him if you have Sheen. Consider taking ignite against him, if not, consider buying Executioner's Calling after Sheen to reduce the health gained from his ult.

VS

Ekko

Medium

If you're facing tank Ekko, this guy can be pretty strong.

Try to fight him when his W is on cooldown, so when you fight him you wont get stunned.
Try to bait him into ulting away WITHOUT you ulting, so the next time you fight, his ult will be on Cooldown, but yours will be up and you will be able to kill him.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Oh Fiora...

If you face a really skilled Fiora, try to play safer than you would normally play against Fiora, because a skilled Fiora can counter you pretty hard. If she somehow fucks up and uses her W for no reason, try to fight her. Her W is on about 20 sec Cooldown, and when this skill is down she's pretty vulnerable.

VS

Fizz

Medium

If playing against AP fizz, dont worry too much, he's pretty easy. Pre level 6 Just Q to a low HP minion every time he gets close to one, and punish him for that. After lvl 6 its when you should kinda worry, because after lvl 6 he will be able to fight back and if you don't pay enough attention, he could kill you.If he jumps on you and after all his rotation of spells you have about half of your hp bar, stun him and all-in him and you will probably win, because after all of his spells are on Cooldown, he got nothing to do against you other than auto-attacking you.

As for tank Fizz, its a bit more difficult. Tank Fizz played a lot differently than AP Fizz, because while AP Fizz's power is in his spells, tank Fizz relies on his basic attacks and his W. In long fights its a bit harder, but if you won't fuck up, you will win 1v1, because thank god he doesn't have reliable tank stats.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Try to avoid his kegs as much as you can, farm safely until level 6 and until you get Sheen, and then you can fight him. He can counter you with his W and remove your stun, but this spell is on a pretty long Cooldown, about 20 sec while your E is on 8 seconds Cooldown and even less with Sheen, so try to find opportunities to fight him while his W is on Cooldown.

VS

Garen

Medium
I dont really see a lot of Garens lately...god bless :)
Anyway, Garen is a pretty OK matchup for Irelia and I would say easy if not for his passive.
Levels 1-5 he wins 1v1 early on because he deals more damage than you and you cant do much about it.
Try to stun him before he can Q you and harass him until he retreats, just dont get low enough for him to ult, because it will hurt, so watch out.

VS

Gnar

Medium

This cute little fluff is pretty easy!

Until he's less fluffy, cute and little.
Try to fight Gnar when he's Rage bar is not almost full, and q him after he's jumping, to get couple more autos before retreating, but be careful, he can kite you pretty easily.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

Seems like this pony is pretty popular in the jungle lately, but I do see him top sometimes.

To be honest, he's pretty easy. Early on, he will out poke you and punish you for csing, because of his Q's damage and low CD, but after level 6 its pretty easy. Most of the time Hecarim will use his E in lane when his jungler is around and will make it really obvious, so if he's using E in lane, his jungler is probably around to gank you. Anyway, after level 6 and Sheen, all in him until he's ghosting away, ulting away, or whatever.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Heimerdinger can be really annoying at the early levels, so do not try to fight him early on and play safe. After you're level 6, Q to one of his turrets, the one that is the most close to him, stun him and poke him until he either flashes out, or ulting you.

Corrupting potion start suggested, plus, Wit's End/Hexdrinker is a good first buy against him.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Illaoi is a pretty easy matchup, because Irelia can out damage her, if you play currectly.

Never fight her near walls with tentacles on them and never fight her when she pulls your spirit out. Only fight Illaoi if no tentacles are near, to get minimum damage from her ult, so you will be able to kill her safely and she will not be able to heal too much.

VS

Irelia

Hard

Kappa.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

Jarvan is a pretty easy matchup, just avoid fighting him levels 1-4 because this is his strongest point early on, and he will get you super low after E-Q combo and 1-2 AA.

VS

Jax

Medium

Jax is a really classic matchup, and can really go either way. Jax's kit is pretty similar to Irelia's kit, both have gap closers, main damage abilities and a stun, the biggest difference between the two is that Jax is item depended while Irelia isn't, mainly because of her ability to deal true damage. Levels 1-5 you win fights, so try to use it to your advantage and zone him off of farm. After level 6 he's a bit stronger than you and you can't fight him UNLESS he fights YOU. The reason you cant fight him but he can fight you is that he's e blocks basic attacks and Irelia's kit evolves around basic attacks, BUT, if he goes all in, he will engage with E and after the stun is over, he cant block your attacks and you can try to fight him and you will probably win. I recommend putting 2 points in your E early, just to out-stun his stun, making things easier for you and get an extra auto attack in.

VS

Jayce

Easy

One of Irelia's easiest matchups, try no to fight him until level 6 and just dodge his E-Q combos in his ranged form, and after level 6, you will be able to kill him easily.

VS

Kayle

Hard

Reeeally hard matchup if the Kayle player knows what he's doing.

Harass her pre level 6 as much as possible and after level 6, ask for a gank or farm under tower.

Corrupting Potion start recommended.

VS

Kennen

Hard

Kennen can be super annoying early game, just try to avoid as many Q's and auto attacks as you possibly can. After level 6, the matchup will be a lot easier for you, use your Q on him AFTER he stuns you to maximize you damage on him.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

Pretty easy, try to avoid as many Q's as possible levels 1-4, level 5 you can harass her with you full combo and get her down to 1/4 HP Bar.

VS

Malphite

Medium

Pretty easy matchup, until he gets Sunfire Cape which makes the 1v1 matchup a bit harder, additionally, his E is a direct counter to you because when it hits, its slows your attack speed, so try to fight him when this skill is on Cooldown.

VS

Maokai

Medium

One tough tree for sure...

Try to harass him pre level 6 as much as possible, because you're stronger than him pre level 6.
After level 6 though is when it gets a bit trickier. After level 6 engage on him and bait him into ulting, once he does, stun him, and back off until he stops his ult, after he does, engage on him again and kill him. I suggest put two points into your E (second point in level 4/5, 4 is better though) early on, for when he ults and you will have to stun him and back off.

VS

Nasus

Hard

HARASS HIM BEFORE ITS TOO LATE

Do whatever you can to prevent him from getting stacks, deny his farm, harass him with all of your heart, even cry for you jungler to help, I dont care! JUST DO WHATEVER IT TAKES TO STOP THIS DOG, because if he gets his stacks, it will be pretty difficult to kill him AND he will deal tons of damage.
In lane, rush Executioner's Calling, after Sheen/Phage, this should help you dual him, because it will reduce his healing from his passive, and it will reduce the amount of health he gets from his ult.

VS

Olaf

Medium

I Yet to lose to an Olaf in lane.

He's a pretty hard matchup if you're an average Irelia player, but he becomes super easy once you get better with her.
Don't ever try to 1v1 him levels 1-3, just farm safely until level 4 and let him push the wave to your turret. Level 4 is a good level for you to dual him, and level 5 is even better. After level 6 and Sheen you can finally kill him, or atleast burn his ghost (of flash, but it's probably ghost), just don't let him Q you much during the 1v1 and you will win.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Don't fight him until level 6 and you will be fine.

Try to freeze your lane early on and try to farm as much as possible under tower, don't worry if you give up some cs because of his harass.
After level 6, you can finally fight him because his ult isn't helpful in lane, and your does so think about that.

Corrupting Potion start recommended.

VS

Poppy

Medium

To make this matchup sound easier, stay away from walls, and Q her only after her W is on Cooldown. After level 4, don't be afraid of harassing her, just try not to get slammed into a wall because if she slams you, she can kill you, kinda like against Vayne in a way.

VS

Quinn

Hard

Quinn can be really annoying at times, really depends on the Quinn's skill level with the champion.

She can harass you pretty hard levels 1-5 because she's ranged, have a lot of poke and she will try to punish you for trying to farm.
After level 6 and Sheen OR Phage (if you're having trouble in lane and you prefer being a bit more tankier), this is when you shine. You out damage Quinn after level 6 and she cant really do much, but be careful because she can kite you easily.

VS

Renekton

Hard

As if the League of Legends God took a crocodile and Tyler1 and made a champion out of them...

This angry crocodile sure is a hard one and he even got buffed recently :(
Anyway, try to farm safely until level 6 and rush Phage for more AD and HP so you will survive his burst, and will be able to dual him, plus I recommend buying Executioner's Calling after Phage to reduce the healing from his Q and the HP gained from his ult.

Cloth armor/Corrupting Potion start recommended, plus I suggest maxing E first if you're having a really hard time, if not, put another point into E early on just to make the matchup a bit easier.

VS

Rengar

Easy

Easy matchup, he's too squishy and cant handle your burst, and he doesn't have enough damage to kill you 1v1. Rengar top is shit.

VS

Riven

Medium

Favorite matchup out of all matchups. Riven-Irelia matchup is a pretty complicated matchup to explain because every Riven player plays her differently, for the better and for the worst. Skilled Riven players can play around Irelia pretty well and punish Irelia's weak early game pretty hard, so be careful. As for less experienced Riven players, its pretty easy. Inexperienced Riven players tend to overstep a little bit too much, letting Irelia get an easy stun on the Riven player and an easy all-in, ending up most of the time in a kill for Irelia. If the Riven is more experienced, I suggest you to wait for a gank if you're having trouble in the lane, and putting another point into your E early on.

VS

Rumble

Medium

Early on, try to harass him while his Q is down, will be down for about 3 secounds after he casted it, and after level 6, play a bit safer, if he lands a good ulty, you're dead. I suggest rushing Hexdrinker/Wit's End.

VS

Shen

Medium

Pretty meh matchup for you, can go either way. Level 1-3 he wins the matchup IF he goes super aggressive on you and you cant do much because of his W blocking your main damage, that being your auto attacks. I recommend putting another point in your E for a longer stun and another free auto attack before he uses his W to block your damage.

VS

Sion

Medium

Sion wins early game, he's just stronger than you. Levels 1-4 is his strongest levels against you, but once you're level 5 and you got 45 true damage on your w you can start bully the **** out of him until he retreats or flashes away.

VS

Swain

Medium

Try to fight Swain pre level 6, because before level 6 he almost got nothing.

After level 6, rush this little item 3123.png (Executioner's Calling) and the matchup will be a lot easier for you.

VS

Teemo

Medium

C'mon, this guy?

Teemo is pretty annoying in the early levels, but still try to farm as much as possible and when you'll get level 6 and a Sheen, this little guy will not gonna have fun. At all. But you will!
#dead_teemo_best_teemo  17.png

VS

Trundle

Hard

I'll be honest now, if you will ever face me in SoloQ and you will want to tilt me, take this guy.

Not a lot of Irelia mains will agree, but I think he's one of the hardest matchups Irelia can get. At the early levels, he will out-damage you and you cant really fight him because he steals AD, and after level 6, his ult will devastate you, because he will shred a lot of your resistances. To make this matchup easier for you, I suggest you to take Ignite, so you will able to 1v1 him, and probably win, if you still prefer to take Teleport over Ignite, I suggest you to rush Executioner's Calling after Sheen/Phage.

Corrupting Potion/Cloth armor and potions/Doran's Shield start recommended.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Try to avoid trading with him early on, his crits hurt. After level 6 ask for your jungler to come for help, Tryndamere will beat you 1v1 because of his ult and when this guy's start to snowball it's not nice.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

With Vladimir's S6 changes, he's harder than ever.

Just farm safely and wait for a gank. After level 6 and Sheen, search for kill opportunities and try to get as less poke as possible before you go in. DONT GO IN IF HIS 3RD Q IS CHARGED UP.

VS

Volibear

Hard

This bear is a tough one.

Every time he flips you, stun him and run, you cant quite fight him because of his W, until you get a bit more tanky. Ask for ganks and farm as much as you can.

Max order should be:
R>E>W>Q
Doran's Shield start is highly recommended

VS

Wukong

Medium

Man I hate this moneky -_-

Early game, he will win trades because of his Q's armor shred and E's high damage. Play safe, don't go 1v1 against him, and farm as much as you can. After level 6 and Sheen, if you still haven't died to him, search for kill opportunities.

Against even decent Wukongs, your max order should be as followed:
R>E>W>Q
Also, Corrupting Potion start is highly recommended.
ALWAYS BUY PINK WARDS

VS

Yasuo

Easy

One of the easiest matchup Irelia can get, after lvl 6, search for kill opportunities, don't let him outplay you, because skilled Yasous can actually win this matchup.

VS

Yorick

Easy

Just annoying, pretty easy matchup

VS

Zac

Medium

I see more and more Zacs in the top lane lately, weird...

Zac can poke you very hard if you let him do that, plus he has tons of sustain, more sustain than you have. Don't try to fight him early on because its kinda pointless, he will just heal all up. The only time you can kill him is by a gank from your jungler, no way he can 1v2, but he can escape easily with his E and ult. If he goes into a brush to use his E, follow him and try to stun him if you have less HP, then all in him with your jungler.

VS

Zed

Easy

Zed is pretty easy matchup.

Before lvl 6, try to fight him as much as you possibly can, he cant really fight back, and he is not as strong as you levels 1-5. After level 6, he can all in you and kill you. Its very important that you won't use your ult until he uses his ult, because you might miss one or two blades while he is invulnerable from his ult. When he will appear next to you, make sure you stun him and all in him before he can do something about it. I suggest putting two points into E early on, then max your W as you would normally do.

About Me Back to Top

I main Irelia from about the middle of Season 5, and I cant quit her since. Before that I used to main mid, but I got bored of it so I decided to switch my role to support and finally to top lane. Currently I have about 400+ games on Irelia and she is my most played champion and most favorite as well. I played Irelia in every role (Support, ADC, Mid, Jungle and of course Top) and I found success in every role (Well, Support Irelia was kinda tricky). I recommend Irelia to anyone who is interested to try playing top lane for the first time because in my opinion, she's one of the best champions to start top lane with. Unfortunately, I do not stream (atm, maybe in the future) but you can find great quality Irelia gameplays in Irelia Carries U's Stream: https://www.twitch.tv/ireliacarriesu
