Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png is the summoner spell you must take every game, it is the best one in the game.  It can be used to secure the last auto for the first blood, allow you to ult their team to trap them and you flash out while your AD carry destroys their faces, and many more things.

14.png You should go 14.png most games as it is your duty to win and even dominate lane so you can do tons of damage in team fights while still being rather tanky.

12.png is a spell you should only go if you are in a hard lane that you have no chance of winning such as.... Hopefully you can use it to make some early plays bot lane and split push later on with the ability to join the team fights.

3.png should only be chosen against lanes that are difficult which can be won through the use of 3.png.  Examples of this are opponents such as 92.png58.png126.png etc. Be sure to use it later on the AD carry or whoever does the most damage and needs to be killed first.

Masteries Back to Top

I would say 12/18/0 is the best right now and probably will be for the forceable future.  The reason Jarvan didn't hope on the Courage of the Colossus train is because he needs damage more than he needs a shield.

If you really want to go 12/0/18 I would suggest going grasp of the undying.

Martial Cadence(Passive): Jarvan IV's first attack on a target deals 10 % of their current health as bonus physical damage. This caps at 400 damage. This effect cannot occur on the same target for 10(1)/8(7)/6(13) seconds(level).

This passive is part of what makes Jarvan do damage.  Use this as often as you can when it is up.  You can auto attack over creeps because of your 175 range which is a great way to trade with melee enemies without having to engage them.

Dragon Strike(Q Ability): Jarvan IV extends his lance, dealing physical damage in a straight line and lowering the Armor of all enemies hit for 3 seconds. Additionally, if it encounters his Demacian Standard, it will pull Jarvan to it, knocking up enemies along his path.
Range: 770
Cost: 45 / 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 mana
Cooldown: 10 / 9 / 8 / 7 / 6 seconds
Physical Damage: 70 / 115 / 160 / 205 / 250 (+1.2 bonus AD)
Armor Reduction: 10 / 14 / 18 / 22 / 26%

Dragon Strike is what makes all of your other abilities and auto attacks hurt so much after you hit them with it.  This ability along with black cleaver and last whisper allows you to penetrate potentially 91% of your enemies armor.

Golden Aegis(W Ability): Jarvan IV shields himself for 5 seconds, which, upon activation, also slows surrounding enemies for 2 seconds. The shield gains strength for every nearby enemy champion upon activation.
Radius of AoE: 600
Cooldown: 20 / 18 / 16 / 14 / 12 seconds
Cost: 45 / 50 / 55 / 60 / 65 mana
Shield Strength: 50 / 90 / 130 / 170 / 210
Extra Shield Strength: 20 / 30 / 40 / 50 / 60 per nearby enemy champion
Slow: 15 / 20 / 25 / 30 / 35%

Use this to slow enemy champions and to shield yourself from damage.

Demacian Standard(E Ability): Jarvan IV throws a Demacian flag to a nearby area, dealing magic damage to enemies at the landing point. The flag will stay on the location for 8 seconds granting attack speed to all nearby allies as an aura.
Cost: 55 mana
Cooldown: 13 / 12.5 / 12 / 11.5 / 11 seconds
Passive Attack Speed: 10 / 13 / 16 / 19 / 22%
Magic Damage: 60 / 105 / 150 / 195 / 240

Grants attack speed and vision.  Use it when pushing and starting your combo.

Cataclysm(R Ability): Jarvan IV leaps to an enemy champion, dealing physical damage and creating a circle of impassable terrain around them for a 3.5 second duration. Jarvan IV can destroy the impassable terrain by activating this ability again.
Range: 650
Cost: 100 / 125 / 150 mana
Cooldown: 120 / 105 / 90 seconds
Physical Damage: 200 / 325 / 450 (+1.5 AD)

Use it to trap enemies in team fights and to kill when dualing.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Go this item most of your games. The regeneration and the damage it provides is much better than any other item.
If you don't like potions and think you can shit on enemy you could go this.
Potential start against heavy AD champions.
Potential start against skill shot reliant champions.
    Don't forget this.

Core Items

Get a hexdrinker early to help fight against AP champions early.
These components build into your damage items.
These are high damage items Jarvan can use to snowball and carry hard with.
You will go Black Cleaver every game no matter what, it is the perfect Jarven item.
Go one of these every game. Go ravenous when ahead and go titanic when behind or if you are the only tank option.
Dead Man's is what is purchased inplace of the Randuin's nerfs. Sterak's is a very good purchase late game. Sunfire is good now, it give more health and pushes waves hard and deals magic damage to champions.
Go Randuins against champions that crit a lot. Banshees is a must most games because of the spellshield and tankiness.
Go mercs by default. Go tabi's against heavy AD teams. Go ionians if you feel cocky and winning.
    Example 1 damage build.
    Example 2 damage build.
    Juggernaut build.
    Tank Build.
    Full assassin.
DO NOT GO LETHALITY! IT IS REALLY BAD RIGHT NOW!

Situational Items

If their team is stacking armor and you need to do more damage build Last Whisper and one of its upgrades.
Mid game pick up Executioner's against sustain champions and Gaint Slayer against health stacking champions.
Get this after Banshees if needed when they have a 4 man AP composition.
Mallet is a good pickup now because it gives better stats for J4 now. Pick up Warmogs to never have to heal again.
Pick up against auto-attack based champions. Thornmail if you're getting focused, Frozen if you're not.
Can be a good pickup if you are behind and your team is carrying you.

Starting Items

2033.png Go this against tanky champion you need more mana to kill.

1036_32.png2003_32.png This is the default start now.  Your early trades are even stronger now.  Just remeber to be careful with your mana.

1029_32.png2003_32.png Start this against AD lanes that you need defense to survive against.

1001_32.png2003_32.png Start this against skillshot based champions you can avoid spells against.

Mana potions have been removed from the game for some reason as of preseason patch 5.22.  Be careful not to waste your mana.  If needed you could run mana regen glyphs.

Core Items

Early Combat Stats

1055_32.png I like this item a lot.  Buy two of them on your first back if you're in a match-up where getting item components will be less beneficial than the stats of dorans.    It gives you 80 health, 8 attack damage, and 3% lifesteal, all of which are great combat stats on Jarvin to win lane.

3134.png This is the new brutalizer.  It gives 20 AD, 10 armor penetration, and a passive where every time you kill a unit your next basic attack does 15 additional damage.  This is a must purchase if you want to do anything against super tanks like 14.png54.png57.png75.png98.png223.png which build armor on their first back..

3155_32.png This serves the same purpose as 1055_32.png, you buy it to get early combat stats that enable you to win lane.  This gives you 20 attack damage, 35 MR, and most importantly a 110-280 magic damage shield based on your level.  This is crucial to dominating many AP matchups.

Black Cleaver(Buy every game)

3071_32.png This is the best item in the game for Jarvin and should be bought every single game.  It gives you 300 health, 55 attack damage, and 20% CDR, the phage passive movement speed, and a passive that reduces a champions armor by 5% when physical damage is dealt to them(stacks up to 6 times).  All of these things are amazing on Jarvin.  With this item and armor pen runes you will penetrate 21.5 armor and up to 36% percent of their armor.  This items synergy with 3074_32.png is fantastic, if you ult their entire team and do physical damage 6 times to all of them, their entire team has 30% less armor for at least 4 seconds so your ADC or AD mid laner to shred them.

Damage Items(Chose 1 or 2)

3142.pngThis is an item I find myself often rushing the component of, 3134.png.  It helps very much during laning phase again tanks who want to get early armor. Also the active is very nice for chasing.  This gives you 30 attack damage, 15% crit, 20 armor pen, 10% cooldown, and an active that grants you 40% attack speed and 20% movement speed.

3074_32.png This is a very good item for Jarvin as it helps you dominate top lane, clears waves like non other, and has amazing synergy with 3071_32.png.  This gives you 75 attack damage, 100% base health regen, 12% lifesteal, and the cleave passive/active.  Personally my favorite item in the game.

3748.png Is a fantastic item on Jarven when you are behind or if your team needs you to be more tanky. This item gives 450 health, 50 AD, and 100% health regen.  It gives a passive that Basic Attacks deal 5 (+ 1% maximum health) bonus on-hit physical damage. Additionally, basic attacks also deal 40 (+ 2.5% maximum health) physical damage in a cone to units behind the target with 385 range.  Its active makes it so that on your next basic attack, Cleave's damage to all targets is increased to 40 (+ 10% maximum health) and has a larger cone (20 second cooldown).  This item actually has a better active that ravenous with a tanky build, your auto when full build will do 800 damage with the active.  Active is an autoattack reset.

3053.png Is often misused as an item and fewer people build it than they should. It gives 500 health and 25% additional attack damage.  Its passive when taking 400-1800(1-18) damage over 5 seconds gives Sterak's Fury which grants increased size, +25% additional base attack damage, and a rapidly decaying shield based off 30% maximum health for 8 seconds. This is an item that should be purchased as a 5th or 6th item when you are high level and have a lot of HP.

Defensive Items

3143.png Go this item if they have a fed ADC, Yasuo, or Tryndamere. This gives  450 health, 60 armor, a passive that reduces attack speed by 15% if enemy champions attack you, and an active that slows 35% of movement speed for around 2 seconds.  Also makes crits against you deal 10% less damage.  The armor component is very good to pick up if you are in a hard AD lane.

3102_32.png Is great against strong AP assassins and heavy AP team compositions.  Gives 500 health, 70 magic resist, 100% base health regen, and a spell shield that regenerates after 40 of not being damaged by enemies.  There is not much of a point of picking up 3065_32.png over 3102_32.png because of the lack of spell shield and that you do not have any lifesteal/ sustain other than 3074_32.png.

3742.png Dead man's plate is the new all purpose armor item that most champions go after the nerfs to Randuins.  It gives 600 health, and 50 armor.  Its passive generates Momentum stacks while moving, up to 100, granting up to +60 bonus movement speed.  Basic attacks discharge all Momentum, dealing +1 on-hit physical damage for every 2 Momentum discharged. If 100 stacks are discharged, damage is doubled to +100 and slows its target by 75%, decaying over 1 second.

Boots

3111_32.png Is the most common boot you should go because of the tenacity it gives you.  Gives you 25 magic resist, and 20% tenacity.

3047_32.png Is great against AD team compositions or auto-attack based champions you are in lane with.  Gives 30 armor, and a passive that reduces the damage by basic attacks by 10%.

3158_32.png Can be a nice pickup if ahead and are snowballing.  These give no defensive stats which is why I do not like them.  Gives 15% tenacity.

Situational Items

Offensive

3123.png Its back now.  This gives 15 AD and grievous wounds.  Buy executioners calling if you are against a sustain champion.  Purchase against 8.png19.png27.png36.png58.png75.png84.png106.png154.png203.png223.png266.png122.png.

3034.png is a new unique item that gives 10 AD and a passive that makes you deal 1% more physical damage to an enemy per 50 health they have more than you.  This caps at 10%.  Build against health stackers like 2.png14.png31.png36.png48.png54.png57.png58.png75.png86.png98.png106.png111.png122.png150.png154.png223.png.

Notice that many of the champion I told you to purchase  3123.png or 3034.png against are listed under both.  Choose which one you think will help you more.

3035.png This is the new last Whisper, it is much cheaper, gives less AD, and only penetrates bonus armor.  Build this and one of its upgrades 3033.png or 3036.png depending on if you already have one of the components or which ever one will help you more if you didnt buy a component earlier.

3156_32.png This is a very good item to upgrade too if you went hexdrinker because of the armor pen they added.  Gives 55 attack damage, 50 magic resist(15 more), a 300 + (1*bonus MR) magic damage shield, and a new passive that gives you 25% attack speed, and 10% spellvamp and lifesteal when the shield is activated until you are out of combat.

3072_32.png If you are really fed and just can't seem to die I can maybe understand going this item because it gives you so much damage and lifesteal while getting a shield from auto-attacking.  Gives 75 attack damage, 20% lifesteal, and an up to 350 damage shield that occurs when lifestealing at full heath.

3031_32.png Only go this is you know you are going to win.  Jarvan isn't suppose to rely on crits.  Gives you 65 attack damage, 20% chance to chance to crit, and gives your crit's 50% more damage.

Defensive

3083_32.png You need health when you already have enough armor and magic resist? Pick up this.  Gives 850 health and a passive that regenerates 1% of your max health every 5 seconds or 3% of max health every 5 seconds if you haven't taken damage for 8 seconds.

3022_32.png Pick this up for the same reason as 3083_32.png but this gives you damage and another slow.  Gives you 650 health, 40 attack damage, and a passive that slows 40% for 1.5 seconds.

3065_32.png Get this if they have a ridiculously have AP composition.  Gives 500 health, 70 magic resist, 100% base health regen, 10% cooldown reduction, and a passive that increases all regen, healing and lifesteal by 20%.  Only pick this up after 3111_32.png3155_32.png and 3102_32.png.  Pick this up against teams like 68_64.png9_64.png7_64.png81_64.png143_64.png.

3075_32.png The along with 3047_32.png will be enough too deal with heavy auto-attack champions if you are having trouble with them.  Gives 100 armor, and a passive that returns 30% of the damage dealt to you by basic attacks.

3190_32.png Honestly Locket of the Iron Salami is a great pick up if you are behind, they have a lot of magic damage, and your support is not going to pick it up.  Gives 400 health, 20 magic resist, 10% cooldown reduction, a passive that grants nearby allies and you 20 magic resistance(40 total for you) and 75% base health regen, and an active that grants a shield that absorbs 50(+10 per level).

Special Notes

RIP Atma's Impaler

We currently do not have the greatest item for Jarvan any more.  Riot removed it in patch 4.20 along with Sword of Divinity and the AD version of Morelo(I forget the name).

This item gave 45 armor, 15% crit chance, and a unique passive that 1.5% of your max health was converted to attack damage.

What this did was make it so you could and should build very tanky while still having a ton of AD.

My typical build with it was: 2041_32.png > double 1055_32.png > Atma's Impaller > 3111_32.png > 3083_32.png > 3071_32.png >3022_32.png > 3143_32.png or 3102_32.png or 3035_32.png.

You would have 4000+ health, 350ish AD, 225ish armor, and 150 magic resist.

This made me change my builds for 2_64.png5_64.png36_64.png48_64.png58_64.png62_64.png75_64.png77_64.png98_64.png106_64.png122_64.png and of course59_64.png.

Riot said they would be bringing it back eventually but it has been a while at this point... But, in patch 5.16 there will be new tank damage items coming out which will likely be beneficial for Jarvan.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Usually is [Top or Jungle]

Against Aatrox Top
Build [AD, Armor Pen, Sustain, Armor, MR, Health]
Try to [Kill, Poke, Deny, Farm, Avoid] Aatrox
Aatrox is a somewhat easy laner to play against.  4/10

From levels 1-2 try to all in him the best you can.  You will be able to trade better and he will not have sustain at that point.  Be careful if he has ignite too, he will be very willing to trade his passive for a kill on you, judge your damage accordingly.  DO NOT WASTE IGNITE ON HIS PASSIVE under normal circumstances.  As long as you have gotten a kill early on him he will not be able to fight you until very late game if at all.  You can interrupt his aatroxQ.png with your jarvanivdemacianstandard.png-jarvanivdragonstrike.png which is devastating when trapping him with jarvanivcataclysm.png.
Pick up an 3123.png and 1053.png early against him, don't build 3036.png until much later and purchase 3074.png first.  If you lost the level 2 fight build 1011.png into 3071.png.

Against Aatrox jungle make sure you ward.  If he ganks and you are against a top laner with  hard CC, you can be CC'ed to death.

6/10 against Aatrox jungle.

VS

Akali

Medium

Usually is [Top or Mid]

Against tank Akali Top
Build [AD, Armor Pen, Sustain, Armor, MR, Health]
Try to [Kill, Poke, Deny, Farm, Avoid] Akali
Akali is an hard top laner to face. 5/10

Pretty much just poke her out and go for the combo kill with ignite which will snowball you.  Once she gets 6 make sure you don't get in a spot where she can kill you and you can't kill her.

Ignore below, it is for damage Akali which nobody goes.

This is not a fun lane for the Akali.  At level 1 she has to get her akalimota.png, she can not trade against your jarvanivdragonstrike.png into your passive auto's.  At level 2 she has to get her akalismokebomb.png to not get all-ined by you, if she doesn't you will kill her.  The only way to lose this matchup is if she gets a lot of jungle help, if the jungler ganks when Akali is 6 and is a squishy jungler kill the squishy before you waste anything on Akali.  By sure to alert your team when she leaves, if she gets feed off of mid or bot you will not have fun.  Also pinks help against her.
Build a 3155.png into 3142.png.

Against Akali mid just make sure she doesnt get fed, so try to gank her and ping bot back if she leaves mid and your mid laner isnt calling mia.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium
Usually Cho'gath is [Top, jungle, or Mid]
Against Cho'gath Top
Build [AD, Armor Pen, Sustain, Armor, MR, Health]
Try to [Kill, Poke, Deny, Farm, Avoid] Akali
Cho'gath is a moderate top laner to go against. 5/10

The key against Cho'gath is to be very aggressive early and to try to get some kills before he gets a lot of armor.  Your kit has a very big advantage over his due to how easy it is to jarvanivdemacianstandard.png-jarvanivdragonstrike.png away from his rupture.png thus starting an all in.  Try to get some kills early which can really snowball against him.  Be careful though, Cho'gath does quite a lot of damage even when behind and is also very good and following up on ganks when the enemy jungler also has CC.  If you get an early kill against him build 3142.png to further the snowball.

Cho'gath can be difficult to play against as a jungler, he has quick clear and generally has good ganks.  Be cautious if he is near and be sure to ward.

Against Cho'gath mid, try to gank him.  He has no escape and midlaners who get ahead usually make sure he stays behind.

VS

Darius

Hard

10/10!!!

This will be hard.  If you get close to CS you are going to get Q'ed.  His all in is much better than yours, his poke is better than yours.  Asking for ganks is the best way to win this lane.  If your jungler stay top early on this lane should be easy because Darius pushes and has no escape.  Be careful at level 6 if both you and the jungler is low, he can get a double and then your lane phase is over.

Start 1029.png into 3068_32.png. If you don't die before getting the sunfire you should be fine.

Also 12.png should be taken if your mid-laner will not switch with you.

Updated for 5.22

So before this patch went live Darius something like a 7/10 to face because of nerfs.  He was still difficult but you could actually beat him if you played decently.  Now because of the sustain increases from the new masteries like Runic armor and Grasp of the Undying he out heals a lot of your damage while dealing so much to you.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

4/10

Be aggressive! Be Be aggressive! Early on is when you can dominate this guy.  Stay behind minions so he can not cleaver you or just dodge it.  Mundo has a very weak early game against most champions including you so all in him a lot.

Be careful though, at a certain point in the game he will outscale you.

Start2041_32.png into double 1055_32.png into 3134_32.png if he is stacking armor or 3077_32.png if he is getting health.  3035_32.png helps later on in the game.

This is actually very even matchup unlike what it used to be before the rework to Fiora.  In this lane she has more all-in potential, heath sustain, and the ability to mitigate damage, but you have much better poke, mana sustain, response to ganks, and initiation.  The big issue with facing her is her ability to parry your full E-Q combo which can very easily get you killed.  The way to win this lane is to poke her constantly with Q and to always auto when she goes into Q you.  Poke her low enough to the point you know you can kill her even if she parries your combo.

Build damage in this lane to kill her because building health or armor against percentage based true damage wont do shit.

3/10

You do more damage than her while being much tankier and have better sustain with the flask.  Fiora's damage comes from her getting items most of the time.  Just poke her with Q and try to bait out her repost.  When all-ining her E-Q her but wait a bit while she is using her repost to auto-attack her.  Don't dive her at level 6 when she has ult.

Start 2041_32.png into double 1055_32.png into 3077_32.png.

VS

Gangplank

Easy
Updated for 5.19

While Gangplank has been overhauled that doesn't change how this matchup goes.  He can not trade with you because of how easy it is to outplay his barrels with your combo.  The only annoying thing about this lane is how fast he is with shooting the barrels.

Ignore below.

4/10

His level 1 will be a little annoying.  At level two go for the kill.  If the gangplank is good he will put at least 3 points into his oranges which will make it so you can't feast on him.  Thankfully most gangplanks suck.

VS

Garen

Medium

7/10

This lane is easier if he lets you poke him so his OP passive regen(9 second CD) doesn't heal him back to full.  If he tries to Q-spin onto you E-Q away from him so he is knocked up and you are not in range of him so his Q goes on cooldown.  Get some health early to lessen his harass.  If they have a heavy AP team, 3155_32.png will help you very much again him too(his ult is magic damage).

VS

Gnar

Easy
Updated for 5.19

4/10

I used to think this lane was hard but that is quite the opposite now that I have experience against it.  Gnar is a very squishy champion in his mini form before he builds tank.  Since he is squishy poking him is very good to get him to the point of being able full combo him to death.  Just remember to not fight him in his mega form unless you know you can kill him.

Ignore below.

9/10

I hate Gnar.  He is squishy in ranged form but has such good escape.  Your only way to win this lane is to kill him early and keep it up because he will outscale you with tank and his CC.  What makes this lane dumb is that if you miss your E-Q combo on him you will lose at least 1/2 of your health from his W(which is a basically Vayne's W on a top laner...).  He will poke you with auto attacks and Q's while you cs, don't let his W get popped.

Start 2041_32.png to Q poke into double 1055_32.png into 3077_32.png or 3134_32.png depending on if he got armor.

Even though this is a very hard lane, take ignite because if you kill him early it won't really be that bad.

Junglers that are very good to have against a Gnar are 5_64.png19_64.png77_64.png254_64.png421_64.png and the best is 106_64.png because of his flip.

VS

Gragas

Easy

4/10

You have better poke and his passive heal can only heal 4% max health every 8 seconds.  Hardcore win trades by E-Qing when he barrels so it doesn't hit you and force an extended trade with him.  Careful of his level 6 burst though, if he W-Q-E-auto-R-ignites you while you are the same level you will die.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

7/10

This lane is not fun.  He will push and poke you as long as you stay in lane.  Poking him is this only thing you can do but you might take a lot of damage if he grenades and rockets you.  Just wait for 6 and you should be able to full combo him with ignite and kill him.  Also tank junlgers with good AOE are very strong at ganking him.  Ex) 32_64.png14_64.png111_64.png57_64.png.

VS

Irelia

Medium

6/10

The thing you need to know about this lane is that Irelia wins extended trades versus you and is reliant on her mana to damage you.  Just poke her down/make her waste her mana and try to make her use her flask charges.  Once you have done that you should be able to fight her.

VS

Jax

Medium

7/10

It's Jax.  You can bully him around until level 6 but if you haven't gotten a kill on him before that, the lane will become hard.  Just be aggressive early and you should be able to get kills.  At level 1 go up to him and auto the crap out of him and Q him, even if he has his stun he can not out damage you unless you do not have control of the lane.  When trading with him just auto him to bait out his E, if you do so throw your flag behind him and Q to it so he can't stun you.  You will probably never be able to fight him after level 12/13 so if he is still in lane at that point, just group with your team and do what Jarvan does well.  In this match up your goal is to delay his items, if you force him to get an early Randuins you have done you job.

VS

Jayce

Easy

4/10

Jayce is squishy and the only thing he can do against you is knock you away, after level 6 that does not really matter. If the Jayce is smart he will start 1029_32.png and you will have a hard time killing him, luckily most Jayce's will not do that.  Just poke him with your Q and auto him if he gets in range of you.  The main thing to remember is to not miss your E-Q combo because of Jayce's combo.  He has 7 spells and all of them deal damage which can add up into a massive combo that even early on can almost 100-0 you.  Just dodge his E-Q combo while harassing him and you should win.  Also he has no escape and junglers can feast on him.

Start 2041_32.png into double 1055_32.png or 3134_32.png if he starts 1029_32.png into 3077_32.png.  Consider an early 3082_32.png or 3047_32.png in this lane.

VS

Kayle

Easy

2/10

Hehe.  She can not do anything against you.  Your level 2 E-Q auto's combo will be able to kill her or at least make her waste her flash.  Even at level 6 if she manages to shield your ult, it doesn't matter because you do so much damage to her and she is so weak until late game.  You should feast off of this lane.

Start2041_32.png into double 1055_32.png into 3077_32.png or maybe even a 3141_32.png.

VS

Kennen

Medium

6/10

I hate Kennen.  He is a dumb champion that needs to be nerfed.  1-5 you naturally beat this guy but will take massive harass(half of your health) if you miss him with your combo.  Try to get level 6 before him for the ult advantage.  The issue with this lane is that he will be harassing you the entire time and naturally builds into 3157_32.png.  After he gets this you can not fight him unless you have taken a serious lead.

Start2041_32.png into 3155_32.png into 3134_32.png.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium
5/10

So I have been seeing  a lot of khazix top recently ever since the lowered the isolation range to 300 which makes him able to lane again.  This lane is very easy before he gets his tiamat as long as you stay within 300 units of your minions.  Once he gets tiamat he can clear your wave really quickly and jump isolation Q you which will do at least half of your health.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

5/10

As somebody who plays a lot of Lee Sin I feel like you should be careful against him.  You both have very very stong early game and this is a match up that will snowball.  Stay behind minions and poke him with Q's.  He wins by getting in your face and using a combo with his Q to do massive damage.  Do not get hit by his Q, I repeat, do not get hit by his Q.  Also keep the creep wave in your favor.

VS

Lulu

Easy

4/10

This lane is like a lot of other ranged matchups for Jarven, he does well because they cant get away from you.  Lulu is very squishy and it is so easy to feast off of her before level 6.  The only thing her ult will do is prevent you from tower diving her.

VS

Malphite

Medium

5/10

This lane is boring.  You win early by never letting his shield back up and by going all in when he is low.  Once he gets 3110_32.png prepare yourself to never kill him again.  If he buys anything else you should rush the 3035_32.png and continue the punishment.  Also if he starts 2041_32.png he will continue to poke you.  Remember that as the game goes on he will get more damage from getting more armor.  Careful for his level 6 combined with a jungler gank.

VS

Maokai

Medium

5/10

He builds tanky and heals from both of you using spells. Just harass a bunch and E-Q if he throws the sapling at you.  He is very stong with jungle ganks.  His spells start to hurt at level 9 so get some MR against him then.

VS

Renekton

Hard
Updated for 5.22

7/10

Even though Renekton is still a pain in the ass, he builds the exact same items as you which were nerfed but does not get the benefit of starting the Corrupting Potion.

Updated for 5.19

8/10

The big issue with this lane is how Renektons kit works.  He goes in, stuns you and does a lot of damage without you being able to say anything.  Since Jarven needs to not be hard cced to do damage this sucks for you.  He also has sustain while being tanky which sucks for you.  If you have ignite over him you could combo onto him after he does his combo which might be able to tip the tides in this matchup.  Consider going full juggernaut build to survive the lane while doing a lot of damage from tank later in the game.

6/10

He has a lot of sustain after the recent buffs to him.  His Q does a lot of healing off of you and he can harass you with it while you CS.  His damage is not something that can't be dealt with so build early armor.

Start 1029_32.png into double 1055_32.png > 3077_32.png >3082_32.png

VS

Rengar

Medium

6/10

Rengar hurts, really, really badly.  He will camp the bushes and you will have to play right next to the river.  Just focus on poking him down while he is viable and do not fight him near the bush.  If he has ignite he will have kill pressure over you.  Just build defensive early and kill him at level 6.  This lane is very snowball based, whoever gets the first kill will dictate a lot of the game.

VS

Riven

Medium

5/10

Even if the Riven is a god that knows when to shield your Q's at all time, your Q will do more damage than her shield which is on a longer cooldown.  Just poke her down and all in when you know you can get a kill.  She is very squishy.

VS

Rumble

Easy

4/10

He has no escape and his harass on you is bad until level 7.  Poke, trade, and all in him constantly.  You will be able to get kills.

VS

Ryze

Easy

2/10

Like Kayle he is squishy and can not do anything against you.  All in him at level 2 to burn his flash and continue to murder him from there.

VS

Shaco

Medium

6/10

There is a reason I am listing this matchup even though you are likely never going to face it.  This lane is so anti-fun for Jarvin it is ridiculous.  What makes this lane a bitch is that Shaco Q is an instant cast, this means that if he has the mana and Q is off cooldown he can dodge the Jarvin lance.  Also his ultimate makes it so he can dodge the Cataclysm and take no damage while putting it on cooldown.  The way to win this lane is to somehow bait out his Q and then when he reveals to E-Q combo and force an extended trade.

VS

Shen

Medium

5/10

Can be easy or a hard lane.  If the Shen is stupid and has no offensive stats he will lose lane because you can kill him easily, if he is smart he will have AD which makes trading with him more difficult.  Regardless you can crush him until level 7, after that he will have damage in his Q which makes his poke hurt a lot.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

5/10

Even matchup.  You both have poke but your is better, her resistances are slightly better, your burst potential is better, her sustained damage is higher.  Ask for jungle ganks and she wont do anything against you.

VS

Singed

Medium

5/10

Poke him early while he can not trade against you.  Once you get the first kill more will follow. He is very weak to jungle ganks especially if he doesn't take 4.png.

VS

Sion

Medium

6/10

I don't like playing against Sion.  He maxes E and it does a ton of damage while he is safe and it destroys your armor.  He also does a lot of physical and magic damage so it is hard to build against him.  If you can dodge his E's the lane will be easy.  He stacks tank items so killing him will be hard after he gets armor.

VS

Swain

Medium
5/10

He can harass you pretty hard but is very squishy and extremely reliant on landing his E.  The way to win this lane is to Q poke and E-Q him when he is about to E you so he misses.  Harass him down to 50% and then full combo him.  After level 6 do not fight him unless you have ignite to stop his healing.

VS

Trundle

Medium

5/10

Some people complain about this lane, it isn't that bad.  He can not poke you and his trades are worse.  Kill him early and that should be enough to win the lane.  Ignite him during his ult and you should be able to win fights after level 6.

VS

Tryndamere

Hard

7/10

It is Tryndamere.  No matter how hard anybody beats him in lane he will still come back and do stupid damage late game and be invincible for 5 seconds.  What you can do against him is poke him before he gets items and stack armor so he can't kill you.  You can fight him easily before level 6.

Update for 5.22

Currently the new mastery Warlords Bloodlust is really good on Tryndamere because it heals him for 15% of the damage dealt by crits and gives him 20% attack speed.  The only way to win this matchup is to start Corrupting potion and all in him at level 1 before he can autoattack minions to get fury.  You should be able to kill him unless he gets super lucky and gets more than one crit, check his runes for crit.  If you dont feel confident about doing this cheese strat, start cloth 4 and rush ninja tabi so he cant kill you.

VS

Udyr

Easy

4/10

Udyr is a very poor duelist early on and does not have a real escape, be very aggressive early and kill him before he gets tank.  He is very susceptible to jungle ganks.

VS

Urgot

Medium

5/10

Urgota be kidding me right?  This lane is not bad unless he starts and builds armor early on.  He should be rushing a tear and then frozen heart.  Just poke and combo him.  He is weak to ganks.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

3/10

He doesn't stand a chance.  This is like kayle but you he doesn't suck as a champ(you just hard counter him).  All in him at level 2 and don't let him live in lane.  He only gets a footing in the lane after level 9 if he hasn't died a ton and you have not gotten many kills.

VS

Volibear

Medium

5/10

He will build tank and you will have a hard time killing him after he gets 3068_32.png.  Just poke him and all in him when he is 50% health with 14.png to stop his passive that heals 30% health.  Do not let him bite you and do not let him throw you when he is near his tower(like singed).  Also be careful of jungler ganks, Voli is one of the best top laners to follow up jungle ganks.

VS

Warwick

Easy

4/10

He has very high mana costs early and can not trade until he get items.  Just E-Q all in him a bunch and try to get a kill before he backs as he will buy lifesteal and armor which turns the lane into a farm lane which is what he wants.

VS

Wukong

Medium

5/10

This lane is not hard, but a good wukong will make it tricky.  His level 2 is scary, that is it.  Just poke to win lane.  The tricky things he can do is "Stop Juke" where he presses S to stop his champion and make you think he cloned, clone right as you are about to ult and you click on the clone which does the damage to the clone(hard to do for him though), and he can E out of your ult if his enemy creeps are nearby.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

5/10

I don't see why people bitch about this lane so much.  His level 2 and 3 are scary but that is about it.  He can't poke you much besides E and maybe one Q but you can poke him.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

4/10

This is like a significantly easier Shaco lane.  He can dash a bunch, jab you with his sword but he can't kill without the help of the jungler.  Yasuo has fallen from glory.  Just farm and all in him.  He has a shield that is up often so you have to do an extended trade in order to hurt him a meaningful amount.

Updated for 5.22

Honestly this lane isn't any harder because you can still kill him before he gets enough crit to heal off of with the Warlords Bloodlust.  As before he will outscale you but you should be able to make his life hell for lanephase.

VS

Yorick

Medium
5/10

For new Yorick just make sure you have enough to burst him down before he can kill you with his maiden.  If you get behind this lane will suck.

Below is for old yorick.

10/10

Good luck... This lane is impossible for Jarvan to win.  His poke is unlimited and his sustain is ridiculous.  His E is the main source of poke and sustain.  You can not win this lane and you probably can not survive it either.  Ask your mid or bot lane to switch with you.

VS

Zed

Easy

4/10

He can not poke you very hard because you are tanky and you should be in your minion wave which makes his Q do very little damage.  Poke him a bunch and see if you can supprise him with your ult if you get 6 before him.  Build some armor and he literally can not do anything against you.  Except for jungle ganks which are unlikely to succeed for both teams, their should be no kills in this lane besides what I listed above.

Start 2041_32.png or 1029_32.png into double1055_32.png into 3134_32.png or 3082_32.png into 3047_32.png.

Jarvan IV Buffs and Nerfs Back to Top

Patch 6.5

So they did buff Jarvan finally.  His W is on a 12 second cooldown at all levels, his ultimate is now only 100 mana at all levels, and it does the damage to all champions trapped inside of it.  Also a flag is placed in the middle to let you get off two knock-ups in 5ish seconds.

While I am glad Jarvan is buffed, these are overbuffs which will cause him to dominate for a couple patches thus being struck by the nerf hammer and having his damage nerfed most likely.

Patch 6.2-6.4

Right now Jarvan sucks kind of.  So many champions are strong right now but don't fear, he is getting buffed next patch.  But they are buffing him in such a way that he will be too strong and will result in nerfs that ruin is laning phase and turn him into a team fight champion.  Oh rito.

6.2

Thunderlords: Restructured from 20 seconds at all levels to 25-15 based on level.

Assassin: 1.5% extra damage when alone to 2% extra damage.

6.3

Dusblade of Draktharr: 75 ad, 10 armor pen, %5 movement speed, passive the deals 90 damage +%25 of their missing health(120 seconds).
This item can be good if you are having issues 1shotting squishies if behind.  Can bring you back in the game.

Deadman's: 100 more gold, less slow.

Sunfire: Deals more damage to creeps.  Good tank item now.

Randuins: 100 less gold, 50 more health.

6.4

Merc Treds: Suck less now, gives %30 tenacity.

Sterak's Gage: 100 less health. Still good item.

Warlords bloodlust: Up to %20 lifesteal, half against minions.  Don't go it, it sucks.  Its only "good" on Olaf, Trynd, and Aatrox.

Patch 6.1

So like always there we no direct buffs to Jarvan(of course).

The issue with this patch is that even though a lot of masteries and items Jarvan uses were buffed, they do more on other champions for the most part.

Fervor of battle was buffed, 1-14(depending on level) and up to 8 stacks, to be better but it does more on champions that rely on auto attacks more and especially ones that have auto resets.  For top this is best on Fiora and Jax, as is also quite good on Aatrox, Jayce, Xin Zhou, Irelia, Kayle, Tryndamere, and Wukong. On Jarvan it is ok, but not anything special.
The penetration from precision was reduced which will low the incentive to go 12/18.

Both of the last whisper upgrades were buffed and I am starting to think they are worth purchasing.
Tiamat/Hydra items were lowered in price which is nice but any buff they make to those items will be better on champions like Fiora, Renekton, and Rengar for Ravenous and Trundle and Mundo rather than Jarvan.

In a sense Jarvan was buffed through the items and the mastery changes, but he wasn't really buffed because all of these changes are better on other champions.

Patch 5.24

They keep buffing Thunderlords Decree which just makes it more and more viable on Jarvan.  I believe this will be nerfed soon.  After that nerf going 0/12/18 will probably be the strongest mastery page on Jarvan.  Precision was also buffed making 12/18/0 stronger.  The resolve and the ferocity tree were overall nerfed and the cunning tree was buffed for the most part.
They also reversed the minion changes of 5.22 which is a buff for everybody.
No actual buffs to Jarvan so I doubt his winrate will rise from 48.5%.

Patch 5.23

The cooldown reduction to Thunderlords Decree was really nice for Jarvan and it made it so going 12/18/0 is really good now.  They changed the cooldown from 30 seconds to 20 seconds.

Patch 5.22

So from what I see from leagueofgraphs.com Jarvans win rate has fallen by about 1%.  From what I understand the change in his win rate is result of his core damage items, Black Cleaver and Ravenous Hydra, having their prices increased and not being buffed to compensate for the price increase.  Items like Guinsoo's, Gunblade and Shiv.  Currently I think playing Jarvan as a bruiser less effective than playing him as a Squishy Fighter who buys Youmoo's first and goes damage with one late game tank item.  Bruiser Jarvan is also less effective than playing him as a true Juggernaut who builds tanky damage items like Sterak's Gage and Titanic with maybe a late Cleaver.  I got to say that Jarvan might be fun to play rushing the Guinsoo's, I'll update this soon.

Masteries were also changed heavily this patch.  Simply Jarvan doesn't benefit from them in the way some other champion do.  The most OP ones, Grasp of the Undying and Warlords Bloodlust, are not viable on him like they are on other champions

Many champions mana pools and regan were buffed from the removal of mana potions but Jarvans was not.

Champions that heavily benefited from this patch are Jax, Tryndamere, Yasuo, Hecarim, Irelia
Champions that minorly benefited from this patch are Kayle, Fizz, Master Yi, Pantheon, Xin Zhou

Conclusion: He has been nerfed.  But dont worry, certain items and masteries will get nerfed while the ones that Jarvan uses might get buffed so likely by next patch Jarvan will be as strong as before.
Also it is only 1%, he didn't get nerfed like Riven or Zed did.

Warding for Top Lane Back to Top

Honestly there is not much to say here other than that these are the spots I like to ward on the blue side

Kc5dZMJ.png

and the red side.

9AqPRlK.png

Keep in mind that these are meant to be aggressive wards that alert me of any additional enemies that could potentially be a threat to me.

These are the wards I use when I am ahead and plan to push or bully my lane opponent more.  If I am behind I just ward to help the team since I would probably be roaming at that point.

Get the upgraded trinket!  Its a sightstone for the price of 3.33 wards.

My Goal for this Season Back to Top

This season I hope to get to a rank I feel properly represents my skill level as a player.  I ended the season in gold 3 but in the first month of the new season I hope to get plat.  By the end of the season I hope to get at least low diamond and maybe higher.

I also hope to make this guide more extensive.
