New Runes Back to Top

231.png

For Jax, the rune page we want to run is fairly standard.Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32(PTA) is the most like old-fervor as of patch 8.5. Triumph.png?width=32 (Triumph), Legend%20Alacrity.png?width=32 (Legend:Alacrity), andCoup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32 (Coup De Grace) are all good for helping us fight and survive. Our secondary goes into the Domination tree, with Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 (Sudden Impact) and Ravenous%20Hunter.png?width=32 (Ravenous Hunter). Jax is a bruiser, and we want to use his hybrid tank/damage builds to do as much work as we can in a team-fight, or in a split-push type of situation. We get a lot of good stats from these runes, Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32PTA helps us get out good DPS while allowing our team to deal more DPS to that target, Triumph.png?width=32 Triumph helps us survive when we hard engage, Legend%20Alacrity.png?width=32 Legend:Alacrity gives us attack speed to get out as many auto attacks as possible, Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32 Coup De Grace helps us deal damage to their squishes. In our secondary tree, Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact gives us hybrid pen for our auto attacks and abilities, and Ravenous%20Hunter.png?width=32 Ravenous Hunter heals us for some of our damage dealt from using our abilities on enemy targets.

179.png

PRIMARY: Precision

Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32--> PTA is super good on Jax. It allows us to take extended trades and output good damage per second. Also, the bonus damage from all sources when the 3-hit active is proc'd is nice for team-fighting.

Triumph.png?width=32--> Triumph is far and away the best out of the 3 options on the first row. Works great for tower dives and high-risk plays.

Legend%20Alacrity.png?width=32--> Legend:Alacrity is a perfect fit for Jax. Gaining Attack Speed for takedown's can help us snowball harder if we get ahead, and helps us out-duel and out-DPS.

Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32--> Coup De Grace is great for what Jax wants to do; threaten the back-line. Dealing more damage to low health targets is great if you can get onto their carries and take them out of the fight.

179.png

SECONDARY: Domination

Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32--> Sudden Impact is a great fit for Jax, granting lethality after using his Q is great for ganking and team-fighting.

Ravenous%20Hunter.png?width=32--> Ravenous Hunter is pretty good for Jax. Healing from ability damage is a nice addition, and probably the best rune we can take in this tree for our secondary.

For Jax, we max jaxempowertwo.png (W), jaxleapstrike.png (Q), and then jaxcounterstrike.png (E). We level up jaxrelentlessassault.png (R) when applicable. We use our W for damage and as an auto-attack reset, we use our Q for mobility, our E for dodging auto-attacks and for the CC, and we use our ult to tank and absorb damage. Jax is exceptional at split-pushing and 1v1'ing. Use this to your advantage, and pressure the map with a lead.

179.png

Jax.png

179.png
jaxpassive.png

PASSIVE: Jax gains bonus Attack Speed for 2.5 seconds everytime he lands a basic attack. This can stack up to 8 times. Stacks fall off one at a time every 0.25 seconds after not attacking for 2.5 seconds.

Jax1.png

Jax's passive works well with keystones that can win extended trades, such as Press%20the%20Attack.png?width=32(Press The Attack). The attack speed in combination with the items we build can make Jax a hard champion to out-duel. Attack speed from his passive means we don't have to build a lot of attack speed to get our damage out, this is why we can afford to go Titanic Hydra into a more defensive build following our jungle item and tri-force.

179.png
jaxleapstrike.png

Q-Ability: Leap Strike

Jax jumps to a target or ward, dealing Physical damage if it is a target.

Jax2.png
Jax's Q is our mobility. We can use to escape from a bad situation, or to chase down opponents. Proper timing is key to finding success with this ability. Maxing this second means it is up a lot around mid/late game; so use that to your advantage to go for opportunistic plays. Paired with our W, our damage combination from these 2 abilities can seriously chunk someone's health bar, so keep that in mind as well.

179.png
jaxempowertwo.png

W-Ability: Empower

Jax's next basic attack or jaxleapstrike.png (Leap Strike) within a 10 second window will deal bonus magic damage. If Empower is used on a basic attack, it has 50 increased range. Empower also resets Jax's auto-attack timer.

Jax3.png

Proper timing and usage of Jax's W can be crucial to winning trades and team-fights. Timing is the most important factor for this ability, and using it as an auto-attack reset could be clutch in a close fight. Timing your W with your ulti proc is very important for winning trades. This is more of a top-lane tip, but the damage from your ulti passive and your W offers some serious burst, so play around that when possible.

179.png
jaxcounterstrike.png

E-Ability: Counterstrike

Jax enters a defensive stance causing all basic attacks to miss him and Jax also takes 25% reduced damage from Area of Effect abilities. At the end of the duration, or when Jax presses his E for the second time, it will stun the targets within its radius. It also deals increased Physical damage for each attack that was dodged, up a 100% cap.

Jax4.png

RIGHTTTTTTTT THROUGHHHHHH THE COUNTERSTRIKEEEEEEEEE: Proper timing of Jax's E is essential to having successful ganks, more so early on in the game. Using this ability late-game to negate auto-attack damage from their ADC can be huge, so time it correctly and use the stun as best you can. Also, the CC at the start of the fight is super good, since you can E->Q->2nd part of your E for a stun on priority targets. We max this last usually, since late-game 5v5's are more common, and we can play around vision and objectives through-out the early/mid game, where we don't need the short cool-down on counter-strike since we can get picks and things along those lines.

179.png
jaxrelentlessassault.png

R-Ability: Grandmaster's Might

PASSIVE: Jax deals bonus magic damage every third hit.

ACTIVE: Jax gains bonus armor and bonus magic resistance for 8 seconds.

Jax5.png

Jax's R is great for dueling and team-fighting. The bonus damage in combination with our jaxempowertwo.png (W) can do a lot of damage. Also, the bonus resistances help us stay alive longer, and can be the difference between winning or losing a fight/duel. Getting free resistances allows us to build more health as opposed to being forced into more armor-focused items. This is a factor into why we get cinderhulk often and build mostly HP items (since we get the free resistances from pressing our ultimate).

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Standard Jungle Start for Jax.
Standard start, but with 3 potions over refillable potion.

Core Items

    Standard Jax Jungle build.
    Against heavy AD compositions.
    Against more Magic Damage Compositions.
    Build centered around preventing burst.

Situational Items

Bloodrazor is a more aggressive item to go, and a lot more risky.
Botrk isn't a bad option sometimes. Typically, it's better on Top-lane Jax.
Niche buy, but not bad sometimes.
Adaptive Helm is typically better, with visage isn't a bad option if you build life-steal or have a healing composition (such as Soraka or something to that extent.
Not a bad buy vs AD heavy comps who auto attack a lot.
More of a "for fun" item. Goes well with blood razor, but isn't usually recommended.
Lots of CDR and mana, good some games, but doesn't scale with our cinderhulk since it doesn't give any health. Not a bad buy sometimes though.
Maw is sometimes a good buy. More common for top-lane Jax, but sometimes its good for Jungle Jax toward the end of our build following Cinderhulk, Tri, and Titanic Hydra.
231.png
1041.png--> Machete is the best starter item for Jax jungle. Lifesteal and attack speed work well in combination with Jax's passive.

1401.png--> Blue smite cinderhulk is probably the go-to jungle item for Jax. The chilling smite allows us to chase down opponents, or escape from a bad situation. Cinderhulk works well into our build, which is focused on health and damage.

1413.png-->Red smite cinderhulk is good for dueling, and is also a decent option for Jax jungle. Cinderhulk also works well into our build, which is focused on health and damage.

3111.png--> Merc treads are great against CC and magic damage. The tenacity helps prevent you from getting locked down, and the magic resist is good against AP threats.

3047.png--> Ninja tabi is good against AD comps and AD threats. Reducing basic attack damage by 10% and giving us 30 armor is really good at handling and dueling AD champions.

3748.png--> Titanic Hydra is a great item on Jax. The health and the active combined make it a must on Jungle Jax.

3053.png--> Sterak's Gage helps us survive in fights, and boosts the damage of our sheen proc from tri-force (since it increases our base AD). All around a great item on Jungle Jax.

3026.png--> Guardian Angel usually rounds out our build. It allows us to go deep into the enemy team and cause mayhem while being able to rely on the revive.

3153.png--> Blade of the Ruined King is great for dueling and tank shredding. The damage and attack speed are also nice stats for Jax, and the percent health damage is great at cutting through tanks.

3078.png--> Tri-force is a great dueler item, and is a perfect fit for Jax.

3742.png--> Tankiness and move speed. Along with the extra damage when Deadman's is ready to proc, this item is decent on Jax; but other items are usually just better to buy on him.

3065.png--> Spirit visage is an alright buy sometimes. Lots of health, some MR, and decent heal regeneration.

3194.png--> Good against AP damage threats with overtime damage affects. Think of things like Malz and Brand.

3143.png--> Good against AD damage threats. Slows attack speed, and has an AoE slow active, while reducing critical damage. It also offers a nice amount of armor and HP.

VS

Amumu

Easy

VS

Elise

Medium

Dodge her elisehumane.png and avoid early skirmishes if possible.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

Try to countergank Evelynn when possible, and do your best to side-step her evelynnw.png.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

VS

Gragas

Medium

Gragas deals a decent amount of damage early and gets very tanky. Try to counter-gank and scale up to your item power-spikes.

VS

Graves

Medium

Proper timing of your jaxcounterstrike.png is essential to beating Graves.

VS

Ivern

Easy

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

VS

Kayn

Easy

VS

Kha'Zix

Hard

Kha'zix isolated damage makes him super hard to duel, and his invis makes him harder to track and fight. Get Armor, and have wards on the map to try and best track his movement. Oracles lens is good post level 9 as well for tracking Kha'zix in a fight.

VS

Kindred

Easy

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

Avoid Lee Sin early. He is an early pressure jungler, and you out-scale him later in the game.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

VS

Nidalee

Medium

Nidalee's ability to counter-jungle and move around the map at a quick pace makes her hard to beat if the player is really good at her. Play for late game (you out-scale her).

VS

Nocturne

Medium

Nocturne's damage can be hard to outplay, and his ulti->fear combo is tricky to get past. Do your best to beat him early, and then rely on your better late-game.

VS

Nunu

Easy

VS

Rammus

Hard

Rammus is the ultimate counter to heavy auto-attackers. Sustain and Magic Resist are decent buys against him. Mercury treads are a must.

VS

Rek'Sai

Medium

Lots of damage and good early ganking power. Play smart and scale up to late game.

VS

Rengar

Medium

Lots of damage and good early ganking/picking power. Play smart and scale up to late game. Also, itemize correctly for mid-game with armor and health, and ward up as much as possible to prevent Rengar from getting picks.

VS

Sejuani

Hard

Sej has a lot of CC, which makes it hard for Jax to get onto their back-line. Merc treads are a must.

VS

Shaco

Medium

Shaco is good early, but you out-scale him.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

Shyvana has a weak-ish early game, so punish that. She also scales well, but has a hard time ganking early.

VS

Skarner

Medium

Skarner is very good on the current patch, this match-up isn't easy. Do your best to take his passive circles in the jungle/river.

VS

Udyr

Easy

VS

Vi

Medium

Vi has a lot of damage, so armor and health are ideal against her. Play for late game.

VS

Warwick

Medium

Warwick has damage reduction, good CC, and damage. Do your best to peel your carries and protect them from Warwick. Grevious wounds, armor, and health are good against him.

VS

Wukong

Easy

VS

Xin Zhao

Easy

VS

Zac

Medium

Zac has a long gank range and loads of CC. Merc treads are a must. Farm up early, ward, and play for late game.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

231.png
1. jaxpassive.png (Relentless) assault applies On-hit effects and can critically strike like normal. Spell shield will not block Relentless.

2. jaxleapstrike.png (Leap strike) applies spell-effetcs. Spell shields can block the damage, but not the jump.

3. Leap strike can be used on any targetable, such as Thresh threshw.png (W), J4's jarvanivdemacianstandard.png (E), and so on.

4. Jax's jaxempowertwo.png (W) can apply on-hit effects and critically strike. If Jax's W is blocked or dodged, the W will be consumed. This ability can also be used as an auto-attack reset.

5. Jax's jaxcounterstrike.png (Counter-strike) has no cast time, and can be reactivated before the 2 second window comes to end. You must wait at-least 1 second before you can reactive however. Jax cannot dodge turret shots.

6. Jax's jaxrelentlessassault.png (Grandmaster's might) has no cast time. The passive portion of Jax's R is an on-hit effect, and the active is a self-targeted buff.

7. jaxleapstrike.png (Q) can proc jaxempowertwo.png (W). So if Jax presses W, then Q, the W damage will apply upon Jax using his Q.

8. Timing your ultimate passive with your jaxempowertwo.png (W) will do quite a bit of burst damage.

9. Save your jaxleapstrike.png (Q) when ganking if possible, and use it to follow them when they burn their flash or use their mobility.

10. Our jaxrelentlessassault.png (ultimate active) gives us a lot of resistances; this allows us to focus on building more health then resistance stats.

231.png

Playing as Jax Back to Top

231.png
Early game: Gank when possible, and farm up to your power-spikes. Jax is a late game monster, but that doesn't mean his early game is weak by any means. Get a lead, secure objectives, and Jax can take over a game by himself. Be smart, and don't go for super risky plays early on before you have items. Securing early dragons, pressuring towers, and denying the enemy jungler his camps when possible is ideal here (since Jax out-scales a lot of champions).

Mid game: Mid-game is when you group with your team and contest objects. Jax is a front line champion, and you should look to protect and peel your carries, or attack their carries if the chance prevents itself. Again, itemizing correctly is key to having a solid mid-game. Protect your ADC when possible, secure dragons and other objectives (like towers or maybe rift herald), and don't go for high-risk plays which can cost you and your team towers and gold.

Late game: Peel for your carries and threaten their carries; decide whether or not you should peel back and help your carries, or go forward (soaking damage) and attack their carries. Decision making is key in these late game team-fights. Also, consider what objectives are up, and look to ward them up and take them, or contest the enemy team if they try to take them. Make sure you have a control ward on the map, sweep out enemy vision, and use your kit to setup picks and good engages in which your team can follow up and help you out. Jax is a late-game monster, but having the follow-up from your team makes everything way easier, so keep that in mind.

About Me Back to Top

179.png
I began playing league around the start of season 4 and picked up Yasuo around March of that year, and have remained a dedicated main since then (My favorite skin is High-noon, and I like all of the chroma's). After a few months of dedicated playing, my main account hit platinum 2 in season 5 and my smurf had reached diamond. Following that, in season 6 I was able to cruise into Diamond smoothly on my main account and currently in season 7 (as you probably saw by my lolking link). I ended season 7 in Diamond 5 sadly because I didn't have a lot of time to grind out games, and because I was simply not good enough to climb to where I wanted to be. I did however peak Diamond 3, 100 LP (D2 promos), so while I'm not yet where I want to be, I know I can do it in the future.
