Flash for Obvious Reasons. Considered the best summoner spell in the game, flash allows Kalista to chase down targets, reposition, and escape when needed.


Heal is amazing for bot lane Kalista as it helps her trade and also heals her support in a 2v2 lane. You want Flash + Heal probably 99% of the time.

Cleanse is good enemies who have hard CC (Annie stun, Morgana Snare/Stun, Cassiopeia Ult, ect). Cleanse also has a relatively short cooldown so don’t be too scared to use it.

Standard Precision Keystone

(Recommended)

Really, really standard build. Press the Attack and Fleet Footwork on Kalista right now are the go-to keystones due the the sheer strength and flexibility in terms of the situations that they works in. Most other options are situational, but this is the page that generally works best for all situations.


Domination Secondary Path

There's quite a few options you can take here. Sudden impact and eyeball collection allows for more damage, but you can opt to go for more sustain such as taste of blood or more utility such as zombie ward and ghost poro.



Alternative Sorcery Keystone

Not really recommend as Kalista isn't exactly ability-abusive.

Standard Kalista build. BoRK and Hurricane are absolutely essential on patch 8.11. All other build routes are usually variations of the standard blade of the Runaans Edge build path.

Strengths:
- 1-Item powerspike with Blade of the Ruined King
- Build path is good as it contains many small parts
- AoE/Waveclear with Hurricane

- Fragile early game, Bilgewater Cutlass is rather weak
- Semi-Expensive core items


Blade, Rageblade, Runaans:

Variation to the standard Kalista build. Rageblade wasn't affected by the patch 8.11 ADC itemization changes and still remains a strong item.

Kalista has an advantage in this lane as her mobility can counter Ashe's range and abilities.

Tips:
  • Try to break the range leash between her and you. You will win in straight up auto-attack + ability trades
  • Try to dodge her W by standing behind minions or by using your passive to get out of its range
  • Watch out when she hits level 6 as she has the ability to initiate and set up for her support
  • Ashe is rather vulnerable without her ult. Use this timing to play aggressive.

Caitlyn

Medium
Fairly even lane as Caitlyn out-ranges Kalista, but Kalista has much more mobility to make up for it and can often fight back against Caitlyn.

Tips:
  • She out-ranges you quite a bit. Break the range leash using your passive to go in for trades
  • Watch where she aims her Q and use your passive to dodge accordingly.
  • Watch out for her traps and avoid going over it with your passive
  • Don't be afraid of farming under turret vs a Caitlyn. Just try not to behind more than 30 CS by the end of the lane phase

Corki

Medium
Corki will win this lane if Kalista cannot dodge his abilities well, but since Kalista has a lot of mobility and Corki relies on a lot of damage from his abilities, the lane can go either way.

Tips:
  • Use your passive to help dodge Corki's abilities
  • Be careful when engaging in short-term trades with Corki as he has a lot of burst damage if he gets sheen/tri-force
  • If he W's into you, sometimes its better to fight him and try to kill him rather than running away

Draven

Hard
Difficult lane for Kalista as Draven's auto-attacks do a lot of damage and can't be avoided with Kalista's mobility. Draven's mobility also counters Kalista's. 

Tips:
  • Try to survive lane as best as you can. You will not win straight up trades with him.
  • Consider maxing Q to poke Draven from a distance
  • Because Draven does not have a reliable escape, you can initiate level 6 by ulting your support in if you get the opportunity

Ezreal

Easy
Kalista should be able to win this lane quite easily as his insane mobility can counter Ezreal's mobility and dodge his skill-shot reliant abilities.

Tips:
  • Use your passive to dodge Ezreal's skill-shots.
  • His E is his only mobility ability. Watch for its cooldown to see when you can play aggressive. 
  • Watch when Ezreal has his passive stacked and avoid fighting him when he does have it up since it gives him a lot of attack speed.

Graves

Medium
Lane can go either way as Graves out-trades Kalista in a 1v1 duel, but Kalista can abuse mobility to trade back and get out of Grave's smokescreen

Tips:
  • Consider maxing Q to poke and harass Graves from a distance
  • Use your passive to get out of his smokescreen
  • Watch out when he hits level 6 as he has a lot of burst damage

Jinx

Medium
This is an even lane as Jinx can counter Kalista by range with her rocket and by damage with her minigun, but Kalista is very mobile and a small mistake by Jinx may cost her life.

Tips:
  • Avoid fighting her in close range while she has stacks on her minigun form as it gives her a ton of attack speed
  • Use your passive to hop around and dodge her abilities
  • Use Q to harass Jinx in lane as she is immobile without her passive
  • Be careful when fighting her at low-medium hp because her rocket is an execute.

Easy

Kog'Maw

Easy
Kalista can abuse Kog'Maw's early weak game and punish him hard in lane. Kalista's mobility also makes it easy to dodge Kog'Maw's abilities.

Tips:
  • Watch for when he is glowing and be careful when fighting him as he has his W activated.
  • You can dodge his abilities using your passive with ease
  • Kog can be punished hard for being slightly out of position as he lacks mobility

Lucian

Hard

Lucian is rather strong in lane and can out-trade Kalista when in range. Lucian also has fairly high mobility that can counter that of Kalistas'.


Tips:
  • Watch for abilities used by Lucian and fight him when his abilities are on cooldown so that he cannot utilize his passive
  • You can dodge his Q by moving to the side, even if he directly targets you with it
  • Try to initiate on him with your ult if he does not have his E off cooldown as it is his only escape tool

Miss Fortune

Medium

Miss Fortune wins in pure auto-attack trades early, but Kalista will win trades at 6 rather easily. 


Tips:
  • You can choose to max Q first to out-range and poke her in lane
  • Miss Fortune does not have a reliable escape ability, so catching her out of position will likely result in a kill
  • Her Q can bounce from a minion or another champion to you and deals extra damage. Try to stay to the side of your minions but still slightly behind them
  • Try to avoid long term trades as the passive damage on her W will start to stack up

Quinn

Hard

Quinn is a hard lane for Kalista as Quinn can E to disrupt Kalista's movements and has a devastating level 6 against Kalista.


Tips:
  • Keep track of her passive and if it is aimed at you, she may play aggressive on you.
  • Watch out for her blind as it will make you unable to deal auto-attack damage for a short duration, allowing her to win trades
  • Her level 6 mobility with her ult is insane, watch out when you're low-medium hp in lane and she has her ult available
  • If she uses her E aggressively, that means that she will have 1 less escape option

Sivir

Medium

This should be a fairly even lane as Sivir will be focusing on wave clearing and can spell shield your Q and your E. Sivir's level 6 is scary as it gives her insane mobility vs Kalista.


Tips:
  • Sivir has a lot of waveclear with her abilities. If she is trying to push you to your tower, try to push back a bit so that the tower does not take all the CS.
  • Watch for when she uses her spell shield as it has a long cooldown and gives you a window to fight her when it is on cooldown
  • Sivir's level 6 can counter the mobility of Kalista so play cautiously when she has her ult

Twitch

Easy
Kalista should have no trouble with this lane as both Kalista and Twitch will be trying to stack their E, however Kalista outputs more damage in the process. At level 6, Kalista simply laughs at Twitch as Twitch ult turns his auto-attacks into skill-shots that can be easily dodged by Kalista's passive.

Tips:
  • Poke Twitch with your Q in lane as he does not have long ranged attacks
  • Be careful of how many poison stacks he has on you; the more stacks, the more damage his E does and avoid fighting him when you have a lot of poison stacks
  • You can easily dodge his auto-attacks with his ult active by timing your passive to jump to dodge whenever he autos
  • Twitch has rather low mobility and an unreliable escape on his Q. If you or your support can catch him with CC, he becomes very vulnerable

Varus

Medium

This should be a fairly even lane unless one side gives up a kill early. Varus will be waveclearing most of the time to push the lane while Kalista can simply dodge Varus' abilities with her mobility.


Tips:
  • Watch for his Q charging animation and plan to dodge it accordingly
  • Varus does not have any escapes so try to catch him out of position and he will likely go down or be forced to use a summoner
  • Watch how many blight stacks he has on you as the stacks proc to deal bonus damage when he hits you with an ability

Vayne

Hard

This lane might be hard for Kalista as Vayne is mostly auto-attack based and can easily out-duel you at level 6. You have to win lane early to snowball otherwise it will be hard later on.


Tips:
  • Poke Vayne early on with your Q as she has a low range
  • Be careful when she has 2 stacks of her W around you as the 3rd proc deals a lot of damage
  • At level 6, Vayne becomes a great duelist with her ultimate active. Fight her when she does not have the cooldown available to her.

Playing with your support in lane:

Communicate with your support! If you have an aggressive playstyle or a passive playstyle, make sure to let them know how you intend on playing the lane! You have to know your own cooldowns as well as your supports cooldowns for more effective synergy. Pings are especially helpful for communication! Positioning wise, always try to stay in a parallel line in lane with your support as shown below:

Make sure you two hit lv.2 first or play safe!

- This is a really common mistake for bot lane synergy. Be on the same page if you're looking to hit level 2 and push the advantage or play it safe to not get caught off guard by an early enemy level 2 all-in!


Help ward

 - You usually want to ward the tri-brush or lane brushes while your support occasionally walks away from lane to ward river. 


Set up CC for your Support to make a play

- This includes slowing enemies with your kalistaexpungewrapper.png or using your ult kalistarx.png to set up your support so that they can land CC or damage, which in turn will help you get a kill!

Early game would include level 1 and the lane phase. During this time, your main objective is to push turrets, deny the enemy ADC the chance to last hit, farm up/get kills and become an even larger threat mid game!

Kalista is probably the strongest laning ADC. Paired with an aggressive support, you can make a lot of plays early game:

Level 1-5:

Leash for your Jungler if needed and then push the wave as fast as possible to level 2! Whoever hits level 2 first at bot lane has a major advantage since it's 2 people leveling up instead of 1.

When you hit level 3, you should have a point in all 3 abilities. At level 4 when you have 2 points into E, Kalista becomes very strong and this is when I opt to trade with the enemy lane.

Level 6:

Level 6 Kalista has insane kill potential if your support is also ready. Just make sure that your support is also level 6 if possible. This cooldown is very important though since it has a very high cooldown, so only use it when you think you can get a kill or if you need to save your support.

You usually want to take the enemy turret at around 8-11 minutes if possible to transition into the mid game.


Warding in lane:


Always try to ward side brushes in lane and dragon area/tri-bush whenever possible! Your support will do most of the warding, but you can help!

Early Lane Harass: Q > Auto OR Q > Auto > Q > E

Mid game is where the laning phase ends and usually where teamfights and skirmishes involving multiple lanes happens. Kalista has her largest power spike at this point.

By this point, you want to have your first major item and boots completed on Kalista (like Blade of the Ruined King and tier 2 boots). You'll do a lot more damage than early game, but you always want to keep yourself safe first because this is usually when assassins get a huge spike in power. 

Dragon control:

Dragon becomes an important objective during this time. Be careful about fighting here however, especially when the enemy top laner has teleport and can join the fight. You usually want to do dragon if you get a kill or 2, or if the enemy team has returned to base.

Turrets:

Try to take as many turrets as possible during this time. However, often you will have to push turrets with multiple people to take them down.

While Kalista isn't the strongest ADC late game, she can still pick off enemies and do a ton of damage if left unchecked. 

You should have your core finished at this point. You should aim to have at least 3 major items + tier 2 boots in order to be a large threat during teamfights.

Be careful when farming!

Try to keep farming to a minimum during this time. The enemy team may catch and assassinate you, or do baron if you're farming bot. 

Objectives:

Baron buff is super strong at this point and is a huge priority! Baron is also much harder to take down now so be careful when attempting Baron. Always try to have a ward on Baron Nashor so that you don't facecheck the area.

Dragon buff is good, but not worth giving up baron buff for. Unless the game goes to super late game and you're getting to 4 or 5 dragon buffs, it is usually much more important to obtain baron control instead.

Try to get turrets/inhibitors if possible, but don't make the common mistake of overstaying.

Basics

First, lets look at the basics. Shurelya does a really good job of explaining teamfighting in this video:

Teamfighting as Kalista

1. Starting a Fight

You can either initiate a fight with your support and ultimate or wait and do sustained damage. Consider:

  • Cooldowns: If you have all your cooldowns available, you are in an optimal place to fight. Now consider your team's ults (green circle beside their portrait on the left) and the enemy team's ults (if you know their cooldown)

  • Priority: Your target priority is (Enemy) ADC = Mid > Support > Jungle > Top. There are exceptions to this if there is an enemy team Riven top laner who might be more of a threat, ect.

  • Positioning: You can stay closer to the front line with your support and ultimate or stay back and wait to pick someone off after stacking E.


2. Teamfighting

  • You can either use cooldowns one at a time as opportunities arise or;

  • Use rounds of cooldowns then wait until another round of cooldowns are available

  • Use your E to guarantee kills and reset its cooldown

  • Dodge key enemy abilities and CC if possible

  • Assess how a teamfight is going and plan your next move

3. After a Teamfight

  • This time is dangerous if there are still enemies left and you're at low health. They'll usually have all their cooldowns available and can burst you down.

  • If you win a teamfight, look to take objectives

  • If you lose a teamfight, plan how to stop the enemy team from taking objectives if posible

  • Keep track of what summoner spells or guardian angels will be available/unavailable for the next fight

Tips:

  • Build situationally!

  • Practice last hitting minions in custom games to get the hang of it. Last hitting (CSing) is very important.

  • Farm side lanes when possible then group with the team or;

  • Assassinate enemy carries that attempt to farm juice side lanes with minions in them

  • In a teamfight, its usually best to hit the person closest to you if you can't get to anyone of a bigger priority

  • Save summoner spells for major teamfights/objectives

  • Try to stack as many Es as possible and guaranteed its cooldown reset

  • Use your W to scout whenever you are lacking in vision

  • Always ward! Try to carry wards with  you.

  • Upgrade your trinket.

Most importantly...
  • Learn to use the attack move feature! This will let Kalista jump around a ton during teamfights and significantly reduces the mechanically demanding elements of playing ADC.
