Summoner Spells Back to Top

Summoner Spells

Untitled-1.png

4.png Flash is the first Summoner Spell and I recommend always taking it when you're playing this champion. This is because Flash is the best Summoner Spell around. It is a really good and a reliable Summoner Spell. It can be used offensively, defensively and is honestly, a really good Spell to take.

12.png If you're playing Kayn Toplane, then you should take Teleport. Teleport will give you global map pressure and allow you to help your other lanes out. Teleport should always be taken when you're playing Top lane Kayn.

Runes

Untitled-1.png

After playing a bunch of games with 141.png Kayn and trying out a range of different Rune combinations, I recommend taking Domination as your main Rune Tree. This Rune page is for champions who can execute and kill enemies quickly and easily. 141.png Kayn really benefits from this page. blue_line.png

For 141.png Kayn I recommend that you take Electrocute.png?width=32 Electrocute is the best Rune for him in the Top lane. This is because you can easily get the Electrocute.png?width=32 Electrocute spark from using your abilities and auto attacks. It is relativily easy to proc Electrocute.png?width=32 Electrocute especially when you're against melee champions such as 57.png Maokai and 58.png Renekton. The next Rune you want to take is Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact. Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact gives you bonus lethality once you've used a dash, Teleport, Blink or leaving stealth. 141.png Kayn's kaynq.png Q and kaynr.png Ultimate both will proc Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact. Your kayne.png E does not proc Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 Sudden Impact because your kayne.png E will leave you in a 6.png Ghosted State. For your next Rune I recommend that you take Eyeball%20Collection.png?width=32 Eyeball collection. 141.png Kayn can technically take any one of these Runes, but, I believe that Eyeball%20Collection.png?width=32 Eyeball Collection is more beneficial- especially if you snowball. For your final Rune I recommend that you take Ravenous%20Hunter.png?width=32 Ravenous Hunter. This Rune will allow you to sustain and survive throughout the game thanks to the healing from your abilities. This will allow you to stay healthier when farming and fighting enemies.white_line.png

For your secondary Rune tree, I recommend that you take Precision. Precision will give you the sustain you need to survive team fights and allow you to continue fighting or farming. The two Runes that I've picked go hand in hand with each other. Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32 Coup De Grace will allow you to deal more damage and execute enemies that are on low health. This will allow you to be more of an assassin. The other Rune I recommend is Triumph.png?width=32 Triumph. This Rune will allow you to sustain and stay healthy whenever you get a kill or an assist. You will also gain some bonus gold thanks to this Rune.179.png

Ability Rundown

Untitled-1.png

Kayn's Passive is The Darkin Scythe

Each time 141.png Kayn auto attacks or deals damage to an enemy champion, they will drop an orb that will be automatically collected upon leaving combat. Once his bar is full, he can choose to either be overwhelmed by RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast or expel himself to become Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin. You will transfer into either depending on which one you attacked more- melee champions or ranged champions. If you decide that you want to change into the other, you'll have to wait 4 minutes.

To activate his transformation, you need to be on the Summoners Platform and click the portrait. white_line.png

Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png  The Shadow Assassin Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png

  • Whenever 141.png Kayn deals damage against an enemy, he will also deal bonus magic damage lasting for 3seconds upon entering combat. This will refresh after 8 seconds out of combat, or after using your kaynr.png Ultimate.

RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast RhaastSquare_new.png

  • He  7.png heals himself when he deals damage to enemies through his abilities.

kaynewest1.png

blue_line.png

Kayn's Q is Reaping Slash

141.png Kayn dashes forward, dealing damage to all enemies that he passes through and flourishes his scythe dealing damage to all enemies in an AOE circle surrounding him. Your kaynq.png Q will also mark enemies for your kaynr.png Ultimate.

Both instances of Reaping Slash deal 55 bonus damage against monsters such as Dragon, Jungle camps, and Baron.white_line.png

Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png  The Shadow Assassin Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png

  • No change to Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin.

RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast RhaastSquare_new.png

  • RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast does % max health damage to enemies.

kaynewest2.png

Tips and Tricks

It is important to not waste your kaynq.png Q because that is your main source of trading and poke. In most cases you should use your kaynq.png Q before any other ability to trade. Also, if you maximize your kaynq.pngQ useage in the early game, you will get your kaynpassive.png Passive quickly. You can also use your kaynq.png Q to get over certain small walls such as the one around the Dragon pit. Try your best to hit the enemy with both parts of your ability (the dash and the swing) as this will do both instances of kaynq.png Reaping Slash.

blue_line.png

Kayn's W is Blade's Reach

141.png Kayn sweeps his scythe down in front of him dealing damage in a straight line and deals damage to all enemies that are hit. It also slows the enemies by 60% for 1.5seconds and will mark them with your kaynr.png Ultimate.white_line.png

Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png  The Shadow Assassin Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png

  • Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin can perform other actions whilst using his kaynw.png W. He also increases the range of kaynw.png Blade's Reach by 200.

RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast RhaastSquare_new.png

  • RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast will knock up any enemies hit. He cannot use any other abilities whilst he uses his kaynw.png W.

kaynewest3.pngTips and Tricks

Your kaynw.png W is one of the greatest parts of your kit. You can use your kaynw.png W when you are in the terrain, much like your kaynq.png Q. Your kaynw.png W is very good but is not very strong until you get your items. Both RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast and normal 141.png Kayn cannot perform other actions while using your kaynw.png W. But Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin can use his kaynw.png W whilst on the move. Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin can assinate enemies because of the ability to use his kaynw.png W on the move. An example combo would be kaynq.png Q + kaynw.png W + kaynr.png R.
For RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast, your kaynw.png W will knock up enemies that are hit by it. This means that you can peel for your team during team fights. Of course, because you're RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast, you will not be able to assassinate the enemy. This will also make it harder to kill players who are caught out of position or who are split pushing.
Your kaynw.png W is rather versatile and can be used in a variety of situations and circumstances. Try your best to hit the enemy with it, as this is your main skill shot. Missing this skill shot can make trades incredibly risky and the enemy may be able to kite you. Missing this will result in; less enemy damage and you will not be able to slow the enemy and follow up with the rest of your combo.blue_line.png

Kayn's E is Shadow Step

141.png Kayn gains 40% bonus movement speed and is briefly 6.png ghosted. He can ignore terrain collision but can be caught out from it. Becoming immobile will interrupt his kayne.png E. 141.png Kayn 7.png heals himself when he enters the terrain for the first time. kayne.png Shadow Step's duration is increased if he has not been, or is not in combat. While inside the terrain, 141.png Kayn will get vision of the surrounding areas (except he cannot see inside bushes.)

If 141.png Kayn is hit with enemy abilities or auto attacks. The duration and effect of kayne.png Shadow Step will cease and will be pushed out of the terrain. In some cases, you may come out on the other side- the side you do not want.

white_line.png

Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png  The Shadow Assassin Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png

  • Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin will remove any slows that are on him and make him immune to them. Entering terrain will also increase the bonus movement speed to 70% instead of the 40%.

RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast RhaastSquare_new.png

  • No change to RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast.
kaynewest4.png

Tips and Tricks

Your kayne.png E will be your lifesaver in many situations. The main ones being getting around the map and to 7.png heal. Whenever using your kayne.png E, make sure to not be in combat with any champions, monsters or minions as this will reduce the time you can be in terrain. When taking damage you may not be able to escape and instead, you will be pushed out of walls and terrain. You may end up on the wrong side if you're unlucky.

This makes you really hard to kite, and hard to kill. Suprise is the key element to assassination!
blue_line.png

Kayn's Ultimate is Umbral Trespass

Whenever 141.png Kayn attacks an enemy and deals damage to them, he applies kaynr.png Umbral Trespass for 3.5 seconds. Any ability he uses, like his kaynq.png Q or kaynw.png W will mark them.

Active: 141.png Kayn infests the enemy champion for up to 2.5 seconds. He will then become untargetable and will reveal them where ever they go. Reactiviating this ability will pass you out from their body in the cursor's direction.

white_line.png

Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png  The Shadow Assassin Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png

  • Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin gains bonus range and using his kaynr.png Ultimate will reset The Darkin Scythe's cooldown.

RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast RhaastSquare_new.png

  •  RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast will do maximum health damage and 7.png heal himself for a percentage of the targets maximum health.
kaynewest5.png

Tips and Tricks

The kaynr.png Ultimate is one of the best parts of your kit. It can be used in a variaty of ways and in many different situations. Because I usually go for Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin as my transformation, it will allow me to deal lots of damage to the enemeies when using it. You should try to use your kaynr.png Ultimate on whoever will die or who ever you can kill. It is important to remember that only you can get marks for this ability.
You will become untargetable when using this ability, which means you can use it to dodge skill shots and CC. 179.png

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Doran's Blade is the best start if you're against a melee champion. This is the recommended start.
If you are against a ranged champion, you should get Doran's Shield
If you're against a heavy sustain champion- take Corrupting Potion as your starting item.

Core Items

Duskblade of Draktharr Is your first item. This item is great on all instances and transformations of Kayn as they buff your damage and allow you to be a threat.
You want to get boots as your second item. I would get either Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads. Depending on which one you need to win the game!
You should get either Maw or Ghostblade as your third item. You want Ghostblade if you're against an AD champion. If you're against an AP champion, you want Maw.
As Rhaast your final 3 items are going to be: The Black Cleaver, Dead Man's Plate and Guardians Angel.
As The Shadow Assassin your final 3 items are going to be: Armor Pen item, Dead Man's Plate and Guardians Angel.

Situational Items

If you're against an AP champion in lane get Maw. This will protect you against their AP damage and also allow you to get a shield against other champions.
If you need more MR because the enemy is mostly AP you could get any of these items. Our build lacks Magic Resist, so purchasing some of these items will save you.

Items and Description

Untitled-1.png

141.png Kayn Top lane has a very good lane most of the time thanks to his kit. The starting items vary between each game and you should start what items you feel will best suit you. 141.png Kayn can start either of the three that I have listed, but I personally prefer to take 1055.png Doran's Blade as the recommended start. I usually take this as it allows me to go aggressive in lane. However, If you are against a ranged champion such as 50.png Swain or 133.png Quinn, you might want to take 1054.png Doran's Shield instead. This will give you some protection in lane and still allow you to be a threat. The alternative and final starting item you could purchase is 2033.png Courrpting Potion. I usually only buy this if I am against a sustain lane or somebody who often goes for trades such as a 92.png Riven or 41.png Gangplank. Your first item is going to be, in most cases- 3147.png Duskblade of Draktharr. This item is really good and will allow you to deal damage and kill enemies. If you're against an AD and melee champion then this item is even stronger. I would always recommend getting this item first because it will allow you to kill enemies and allow you to be a threat in lane. Your second item is going to be 1001.png Boots. I recommend getting either 3047.png Ninja Tabi or 3111.png Mercury's Treads. However, if you're against a ranged champion in lane such as 67.png Vayne or 133.png Quinn. You should get 3047.png Ninja Tabi as your First Item! Then get 3147.png Duskblade of Draktharr as your second item. For your third item you should be looking to get 3142.png Ghostblade. This item will give you damage and allow you to get around the map even quicker. Alternativly, if you're against an AP champion in lane- you could get 3156.png Maw instead. By this time of your third item purchase, you should already have your kaynpassive.png Passive stacked and ready. blue_line.png

If you have decided to go for Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin, then your 4th 5th and final item is going to be: 3033.png Mortal Reminder or 3036.png Lord Dominik's Regards. This will be your 4th item. You should get 3033.png Mortal Reminder if you're against a heavy sustain team and against enemies such as 36.png Dr Mundo, 50.png Swain or 16.png Soraka. You should get 3036.png Lord Dominik's if you're against a general tank team. Your next item is going to be3742.png Dead Man's Plate as this will give you defensive stats and will prevent you from being one shot. Your final item is going to be 3026.png Guardian's Angel.

If you have gone for RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast, then your 4th, 5th and 6th items are going to be:3071.png  Black Cleaver. This item is really good as it gives you defensive stats and also damage. This will be good on him because it still allows you to deal damage whilst also being tanky. The next item is 3742.png Dead Man's Plate that will also give you defensive stats. Your final item is again 3026.png Guardian's Angel. This item is really good as it gives you defensive and offensive stats.179.png

Which Form Should You Take? Back to Top

Which form to take? Shadow Assassin or Rhaast?

Untitled-1.png

Each form of 141.png Kayn's kaynpassive.png Passive is strong. Each has their benefits and their drawbacks. Personally, I really enjoy going for Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin path because I like to carry games and get fed. Most of the time, I tend to go Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png Shadow Assassin. With that said, there is some context to my choices for each and I will try my best to describe when you should take Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin transformation or RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast transformation.

blue_line.png

The Shadow Assassin

Benefits of taking Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin as your transformation.

  • You can assassinate the enemy carries who are out of position. This is a really good feeling to play and is incredibly fun to one shot enemies. Especially when you take Predator.png?width=32 Predator, you can sneak up on them with your 1001.png boots active, your kayne.png E and then kill the enemies quite easily. This is both satisfying and frustrating for the enemy!
  • You can use your kaynw.png W on the go and has no cast time. This will allow you to fight enemies on the move and allow you to get closer to them quickly. Compared to RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast and normal 141.png Kayn, You will be more mobile and your kaynw.png W will be easier to hit and reposition.

Rhaast

Benefits of taking RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast as your transformation.

  • You will be slightly tankier when going for RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast. The item differences will make RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast tankier and healthier compared to Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin. However, you will be dealing less damage and will not be as potent as Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin.
  • You will have some form of CC thanks to your kaynw.png W. When taking RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast, your kaynw.png W will knock enemies up, however, it does make you stand still unlike Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin's kaynw.png W.
red_line.png

The Shadow Assassin

Drawbacks of taking Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin as your transformation.

  • When taking Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin, you will not be very tanky and will get killed easily by a good ADC who can kite such as 67.png Vayne or 222.png Jinx. In general, you should try to Assassinate anybody who is caught out of position.  Beware of being kited by a ranged champion. It is much easier to kill a melee one.
  • You will not have any form of hard CC. Unlike RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast, your kaynw.png W will not knock up the enemies hit by it. This means in some occasions, it will be harder to team fight and protect your carries in team fights because of your lack of CC.

Rhaast

Drawbacks of taking RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast as your transformation.

  • If you take Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin, you can usually assassinate an enemy champion if they're caught out of position. However, with RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast it will be slightly harder, this is because you will lack damage thanks to your item choices.
  • RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast is more team fight orientated and you will have to stick with your team. This could be seen as a draw back because you will not be able to solo carry (atleast- it would be harder.)
179.png

Pros and Cons Back to Top

Pros and Cons

Untitled-1.png

Pros

  • Very fun champion. I really enjoy playing 141.png Kayn and writing this guide.
  • Can snowball quiet easily and can solo carry games.
  • Not exactly a tough champion to play or learn.
  • Very mobile thanks to his kaynq.png Q and kayne.png E.
  • Has an AOE ability as your kaynq.png Q. This will allow you to kill camps quickly.
  • Can sustain early thanks to his kayne.png E healing.
  • RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast has hard crowd control thanks to your kaynw.png W.
  • Can choose to take either RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast or Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin.
  • Can push side lanes thanks to his kaynq.png Q and kaynw.png W.
  • Can escape sticky situations thanks to his kayne.png E.
Cons
  • Can be kited by ranged champions.
  • When taking Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin, you will not be very tanky and prone to dieing.
  • When taking RhaastSquare_new.png  Rhaast, you will not be dealing lots of damage or allow you to assassinate an enemy champion.
  • Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin lacks hard CC.
  • Can take long if you're not proactive early to get your kaynpassive.png Passive. Also, you may have to wait an additional 4 minutes for the different transformation if you didn't want the first one.  179.png

Early Game Back to Top

Early Game

Untitled-1.png

Early game 141.png Kayn is pretty simple. Your main job is to skirmish with the enemy laner and try to poke them down. In every situation you want to hit level 2 first, which is 7 minions (the first wave plus 1 melee.) If you're in a good matchup, for example against a 57.png Maokai, 98.png Shen, 58.png Renekton or 83.png Yorick then you want to go for early trades and try to poke them down. You need to go for early skirmishes to get your passive stacked which in most cases should be quiet easily thanks to you always being in lane. However, if you're against a ranged champion then it will be slightly harder. I recommend taking 1054.png Doran's Shield if you're against a ranged champion to protect yourself from their poke. With that said, 141.pngKayn is very simple and is practically the same as many other top lane fights. Try your best to win lane and get your kaynpassive.png passive as quickly as possible.179.png

Mid Game Back to Top

Mid Game

Untitled-1.png

The mid game for 141.png Kayn is incredibly fun and horrible to play against. By this time you should have chosen your passive already and should be either RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast or Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin. Both of the gameplay for each transformation is practically the same except for a few differences which we will discuss momentarily. During the mid-game, you want to keep splitpushing and trying to assasinate the enemy champions. Your job, is to be as annoying as possible and draw the attention from as many of the enemy champions as possible. You should still try to skrimishwith the enemies and take the enemy Jungle camps. If you are being chased, you can use your kayne.png E over walls and around the map to escape.

The mid game is really simple for Kayn- be annoying.179.png

Late Game Back to Top

Late Game

Untitled-1.png

The late game for 141.png Kayn is very simple but your mistakes can cost the game. Your main job during this time is to one shot the enemy ADC or carry. You should try to get in and get out- which should be relativly easy thanks to your kayne.png E and kaynr.png Ultimate.

If you're playing RhaastSquare_new.png  Rhaast then you will not be able to one shot the enemy carry. Instead you want to peel for your team by protecting them against the enemy frontline.

Your late game is rather similar to the Mid game for 141.png Kayn.179.png

Team Fighting Back to Top

Team Fighting

Untitled-1.png

Team fighting for 141.png Kayn can be quiet difficult depending on which build path and which transformation you have gone. If you've gone for Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin then team fighting is difficult (within reason) because you not be tanky and instead you will have to assassinate the enemy.

blue_line.png

For Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin:

You want to hold to the side of each team fight and wait for an enemy to missposition. For example, if the enemy 51.png ADC or 134.png Mid walks out of position- you can go in. Alternativly, if the enemy moves to far foward and leaves the backline vunerable then you should go in and try to assassinate them.

Before you team fight, you want to try to kill any enemies that are caught out of position around the map farming. You can quickly get to them and assinate them. Be annoying as possible and try to kill anybody who is out of position farming.red_line.png

For RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast:

Your RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast gameplay is relativily the same as Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin except for one major difference. Unlike Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin, you will not be able to assinate the enemies and one shot them. It is much harder for RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast to do this because of your item choices and ability change. Instead, you are looking for oppertunites- like  Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.pngThe Shadow Assassin, to kill enemies who are left out of the team fight or are behind the carries. RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast will be the frontline fighter- played much like a brusier.

Alternativly, you can be a secondary Support and try to peel for your carries whilst also dealing damage. Using your kaynw.png W knock up, you should try to protect your ADC and Mid from being killed.

  • 141.png Be proactive in team fights.
  • Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png Focus who you can kill.
  • RhaastSquare_new.png Not go in if your team is not behind you and does not have your back.
  • Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png Not go for a kill if you see the enemies missing.
  • Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png Not go in if you will die 1 for 1.
  • RhaastSquare_new.png Switch targets and help your team.
  • 141.png Not tunnel vision.
  • Use your kayne.png E to escape.
  • Use your kaynr.png Ultimate to dodge skill shots.179.png

Tips and Tricks

Untitled-1.png

  1. You can use your kaynw.png W inside the wall, thanks to your kayne.png E.
  2. Kayn can also use his kaynq.png Q whilst he is in the wall.
  3. Kayn can dodge abilities and skill shots thanks to his kaynr.png Ultimate. Whilst you're in your kaynr.png Ultimate, you become untargetable.
  4. You should try to skirmish as often as possible- especially early. This will give you your passive quickly into the game. However, you need to find a healthy balance between farming and ganking.
  5. If you receive RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast transformation and don't want it, wait 4 minutes and get the alternative Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.pngShadow Assassin.
  6. You can use 141.png Kayn's kaynq.png Q- Reaping Slash to get over certain walls.
  7. When using your kayne.png E, make sure to be close to the wall. This is important because you will miss out on some of the benefits of it if you're far away from the wall.
  8. Your kayne.png E is incredibly strong. Make sure to not use it if you're being targetted or are in combat. If you're trying to get across a big wall, you may fall back- you can do this over small walls instead.
  9. You can choose if and when to jump out of your kaynr.png Ultimate. In some cases, you want to hold on and stay tucked into your enemy in case they 4.png Flash away.
  10. 141.png Kayn's kaynq.png Q provides a slight dash that can be used to escape from enemies.
  11. When in RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast form, use your kaynw.png W on Jungle camps and Rift Scuttler. It will reduce the defences of the Monsters. 179.png

Combos Back to Top

Kayn Combos

Untitled-1.png

141.png Kayn does not have many unique combos, and a lot of the time, you will find yourself mashing buttons! With that said there are some basic combos that you can use for 141.png Kayn.

Remember that you can use both your kaynq.png Q and kaynw.png W from inside the wall if you're near it.

  • kaynq.png Q + kaynw.png W | Standard combo, You go in with your kaynq.png Q and follow it up with your W.
  • kaynw.png W + kaynq.png Q | Standard combo, You first knock/slow the enemy with your kaynw.png W, and then use your kaynq.png Q.
  • kayne.png E + kaynq.png Q + kaynw.png W | Come through terrain and use your kaynq.png Q followed by your kaynw.png W.
  • kayne.png E + kaynw.png W + kaynq.png Q | Come through terrain and use your W followed by your kaynq.png Q.
  • kayne.png E + kaynq.png Q + R + kaynw.png W + kaynq.png Q | Long combo, First you kayne.png E through the terrain and then use your kaynq.png Q and get the proc for your kaynr.png Ultimate. You then use your kaynr.png Ultimate and wait... You then use your kaynw.png W and your kaynq.png Q again and try to kill the enemy.
  • kayne.png E + kaynw.png W + kaynq.png Q + kaynr.png R + kaynq.png Q | Long Combo, Same as before except you use your kaynw.png W before you kaynr.png Ult the enemy. You will use this combo more predominantly as Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin.
red_line.png
PLEASE NOTE: All of these combos work for both forms of 141.png Kayn. However, the timing may be slightly off because RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast has a cast time on his kaynw.png W where Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin doesn't.179.png

This could be seen as a draw back because you will not be able to solo carry (at least- it would be harder.)

red_line.png

So when should you take each?

You want to take Shadow_AssassinSquare_new.png The Shadow Assassin when:
  • You're fed.
  • The enemy has many squishy champions.
  • The enemy has no tank.
  • You are ahead and can easily snowball.
  • The enemy cannot fight 5v5.
You want to take RhaastSquare_new.png Rhaast when:
  • The enemy are mostly tanks.
  • You did not snowball.
  • You are struggling to win trades.
  • Your team has no frontline.
  • You do not have damage or items.

How to Lane Versus a Ranged Champion Back to Top

How to lane Melee vs Ranged

Untitled-1.png

In League of Legends, there are a plethora of champions with different shapes, sizes and abilities. Many champions are melee and are recognizable by their point blank basic attacks. If you’ve ever played a game of League and if you’re reading this, you would know how unfortunate and painful it is to play as a melee champion against a ranged one.

Many players seem to give up the laning phase when they see that they’re against a ranged champion. Fear not! We will discuss some things you can do in these matchups to help improve your laning experience. Using the information presented will allow you to be more active in lane rather than giving it over to the enemy.

Starting Items

If you are a champion that doesn’t have the best early game, then I recommend starting with Doran’s Shield. This item is good as it gives you some early defensive stats that will benefit you in the early levels and help you sustain. Realistically, you will be unable to always trade exclusively against ranged champions. Taking early defensive stats will allow you to survive for longer during the early stages of the game.

image1510910303.png
Dorans Shield is a great starting item.

The item itself gives 80 health and flat health regeneration every 5 seconds. This is good because it will heal you back quicker when you are attacked. It will also restore health when taking damage from enemies. I do not recommend taking harass for free, but in some situations you will have to take damage to farm. This is overall a really good item to start with because it will allow you to survive in lane for longer against the enemy's harassment.

Level 1/2

In Melee versus Ranged matchups, the lane is quickly dictated by who hits level 2 first. In the all matchups, you will want to hit level 2 first but especially in melee versus ranged. If you do not get the level 2 first, then you will be denied minions and farm. While you may not be able to do anything against Ranged champions early, it is important to hit the level 2 to stay up in CS. Being an equal level will prevent the enemy going for extremely trades in the early levels. This will also prevent you from being poked out and losing minions and the experience. Farming is something you need to do and you must make sure to keep the wave in a reasonable position so you can farm easier.

Trading

Going for early trades against champions with ranged can be one way of swinging the lane into your advantage. If you can get the level 2 advantage, then you can go for a trade if the enemy is still level 1.

You can try to fight them if you have ranged abilities such as Akali Q, Zed Q and Talon W. However, this is very situational and depends on the champion you’re playing and who you’re against. It is recommended to look up your champion's power spikes. Most Assassins have the opportunity for an early level trade such as Zed’s W+Q combo. Champions who deal damage will benefit more from these early level trades compared to tanks.

Ability Farming

Most champions in League of Legends have at least 1 damaging ability. Some of them cost mana, some cost health and others cost energy. If you're in a matchup where you are being heavily denied CS from a champion with range, then I recommend trying to farm with your abilities.

If your ability doesn't cost any mana, then it is possible that you can farm with that ability. Dr. Mundo, The Madman of Zaun, has his Q ability that doesn't cost any mana but instead health. This ability will refund the cost if you kill the enemy hit. This can be a good way of farming because you are able to regenerate and get the cost back immediately or over time.

There are some other champions that can benefit from using their abilities to farm with such as Zed. While this sounds good on paper, it is highly situational. You should not, and I do not recommend using your abilities to only farm with. You need to poke and last hit. If you are only farming with your abilities, then you lose all your poke potential. You should not use your abilities to farm if they have high mana costs.

image1510910750.jpg

Sacrifice CS for Experience

Getting farm is incredibly important. In lanes where you will be poked when going to take farm, it is best to sacrifice some of them for the experience. While you do need gold and minions to buy items, experience and staying alive is more important. You need to stay up in CS and levels to still be hazardous to the enemy. While high elo players suggest getting a high amount of CS at 10 minutes, in lanes like this you will have to take what you can get. I recommend always trying to get Cannon minions, but be prepared to sacrifice some. Is that minion gold worth the amount of harassment from the enemy? Keep that in mind when farming.

Itemization

Depending on your champion, you may need to pick up more defensive items early. If you’re a tank and playing against someone with range such as a Kayle or Swain. I recommend buying early armor or magic resist before getting your first core item.

image1510911314.png

In Season 7, Bramble Vest was introduced and it is an amazing item. It’s a mini Thornmail with the same “Thorns” passive. It will deal damage back to enemies when you’re being attacked from basic attacks. This is good as it will allow you to deal damage to them when they attack you. At 1000 gold, the item grants 35 armor which will also help you when trading and farming.

There are many other defensive items out there. Some may be more viable then others and you should build what you need right now to survive the laning phase. Ninja Tabi is another good example of an early defensive item. However, you should only get this item if you will directly benefit from it.

Minion Wave

In every laning phase, you should play around with minion waves to get the most out of your lane. This depends on your champion, but you should try to have it in a more defensive position outside of your tower. You do not want to push the wave because the enemy will easily freeze the wave in a position much further up in the lane and deny you CS. This is something you do not want to happen. When backing or roaming, push the wave as far as you can so they cannot take your tower. Minions will act on instinct and if you’re being attacked by autos from the enemy champion, they will switch targets. This means the wave may mess up - keep that in mind when playing around with minions.

Roaming

If you’ve messed up the minion wave and are being heavily denied, then you should roam. If you are a champion with any potential CC, then you can look to roam and rotate with or without your jungler. Before roaming, make sure that it will be worth it. Push the wave so the enemy cannot take your tower. Look for potential opening in the game where you can gank your middle or bot. Wait for the enemy to use a core ability before going ham.

You must remember that you will be in a disadvantaged position at the start of the game. It is important to farm up and play safe especially early. You should try to position the wave in a favourable position to sustain a high level of creeps while also staying healthy and not being poked easily by enemies. It is better to stay a few CS behind early rather than having to back because you took too much aggro. Practise makes perfect when playing melee versus ranged. Every lane is different so keep an eye on what you can do to have the best possible outcome to this laning phase. In many cases, experience matters as League of Legends is a very, very situational game.
