4.png
Flash

4.png is vital and for someone like Kayn, it is essential for positioning and defensive purposes. It can also be used for offensive purposes to secure kills but you have to consider whether it is worth putting your only escape on CD for 5 minutes in exchange for a potential kill.
  • If you are in trouble and need to Flash, try to wait until the enemy uses an ability to dodge it.
  • Try and position yourself near terrain you can blink over for a more secure escape, especially if kaynq.png is on cooldown or the wall is too thick to dash over.
  • Always be ready to react to enemies that Flash onto you.

11.png

Smite

11.png is required for jungling for a variety of reasons:
  • Ability to purchase 1039.png or 1041.png.
  • Helps with clearing your jungle.
  • Gives additional sustain while jungling or fighting.
  • Secure objectives, such as Baron or Dragon.

New Runes Back to Top

Electrocute.png?width=64
Electrocute

Primary (Domination)

The purpose of this page to increase your burst damage. Take for both forms.
  • Electrocute.png?width=32 works with both of Kayn's forms bringing more burst damage.
  • Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 will proc with kaynq.png.
  • Eyeball%20Collection.png?width=32 provides additional AD as the game progresses.
  • Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32 pairs nicely with the Shadow Assassin. Use Ravenous%20Hunter.png?width=32 with Rhaast for additional sustain.

Secondary (Sorcery)

Celerity.png?width=32 and Waterwalking.png?width=32 are the current standard for junglers. Not only does it help with roaming (especially through the river), it will help you contest Rift Scuttler.

kaynpassive.png
The Darkin Scythe (Passive)

At champion select, you should decide whether you want to transform into the Shadow Assassin or Rhaast. This will depend on your team's composition as well as the enemies. Try and focus on melee or ranged champions depending on which form you want to get but do not ignore gankable lanes as you can still get the other form eventually. The most important thing to full your bar as quickly as possible.

The Shadow Assassin deals additional post-mitigation damage as magical damage. This effect can be refreshed by being out of combat or using kaynr.png. Rhaast will heal a percentage of post-mitigation damage he does with spells.
179.png

kaynq.png
Reaping Slash (Q)

Reaping Slash is very useful in clearing the Raptors and the dash can be used to cross thin walls. Remember that this ability has two instances of damage, one for the dash and the other for the swing of the scythe.
179.png

kaynw.png
Blade's Reach (W)

Blade's Reach is your only form of crowd control and generally must be hit in the early game for a gank to be successful. Blade's Reach has different effects for each transformation.

The Shadow Assassin can now perform other actions while casting, has extra range and should be maxed first. This is great for assassinating enemies. Rhaast will knock up instead of slowing giving more control in fights.
179.png

kayne.png
Shadow Step (E)

Shadow Step is your main ganking tool and can also be used as an escape. In the early game, you can also use it as a heal by simply entering terrain. Be aware, if you are in combat the effects will shorten and if you are by hard crowd control, it will end immediately. Be creative when ganking using the terrain to your advantage and avoiding wards.

On cast, the Shadow Assassin removes any slows and cannot be slowed. The movement speed for entering terrain is also increased, allowing you to cross the map with ease, which can be further enhanced with 3142.png.
179.png

kaynr.png
Umbral Trespass (R)

To use this you have to inflict damage first and mark them. In your base form, the damage is quite lackluster but you can use it to dodge abilities and wait for cooldowns.

The Shadow Assassin gains extra range and also immediately resets kaynpassive.png when you emerge. Rhaast's damage is modified to be based off the target's maximum health and will also heal him based off the target's maximum health. This is extremely useful against high HP tanks, especially when low.

Core Items (Shadow Assassin)

Your priority when buildings items should be: 3706.png --> 1400.png --> 1001.png or 3117.png --> 3134.png --> 3147.png --> 3111.png or 3047.png

This build will enhance your potential to assassinate enemies, especially after you have 3147.png

The decision of when and what boots to get depends on the enemy composition or if you want more mobility. Generally, you would want to get 3117.png as soon as your 1400.png is complete. I recommend exchanging your 3117.png to one of the other alternatives in the late game.

When using your kayne.png, keep an eye out for your 3147.png Nightstalker passive and whether or not you remain unseen or not. This is essential for when your Blackout passive is on cooldown.

You can also use 3142.png while in your kayne.png to move extremely fast, easily travelling a quarter or more of the map in one cast.

Always buy a 2055.png whenever possible. It is everyone's job to ward.
179.png

Core Items (Rhaast)

Your priority when buildings items should be: 3715.png --> 1412.png --> 1001.png --> 3044.png --> 3071.png --> 3111.png or 3047.png

This build will enhance will enhance your bruiser elements, enabling you to fight for long period but also deal a respectable amount of damage.

3071.png will give a massive power boost and stats we need to be able to continuously fight and not die immediately. CDR is relatively strong compared to other stats because part of what makes Rhaast so durable is his healing on abilities.

Always buy a 2055.png whenever possible. It is everyone's job to ward. You can also swap out your 3340.png for 3364.png if you require additional vision control.

Shadow Assassin or Rhaast Back to Top

Which one is better? This is not the question you should be asking, rather; in what situation is one form better than the other?

Lets specifically look at what happens to Rhaast's abilities and how it differs from Kayn and the Shadow Assassin. Firstly, Rhaast gets healing from his abilities. Secondly, he damage scalings on his kaynq.png and kaynr.png are now modified to incorporate maximum HP. This means Rhaast is considerable better against melee champions and tanks. So when choosing what form to take, you have to look at the enemy team's composition rather than your own. My own personal rule of thumb is to pick the Shadow Assassin unless the enemy team has two or more melee champions with at least one being primarily a tank.

It is important not to listen to teammates who tell you to pick Rhaast because your team needs a tank. Rhaast fulfills the role of fighter/bruiser and while he can stand in the front lines if there are a lack of melee champions and tanks then he will not be able to deal damage or sustain himself.

First Jungle Clear Back to Top

Kayn is very versatile with his clears as he can start at either one of the buffs or Raptors.

First, lets focus on your standard clear where you will get a leash from your bot lane.
  1. Bot Side Buff + 2031.png
  2. Raptors
  3. Top Side Rift Scuttler
  4. Top Side Buff + 2031.png if needed + 11.png

Once you have kaynq.png and kaynw.png, you can kill the small Raptors and Wolves without AAs. While they won't die immediately, they will eventually to 1039.png. For Raptors, AA one small Raptor, pull them out so they line up for kaynw.png, then kaynq.png through them. For Wolves, you can kaynw.png first over the wall without having to AA.

This clear will allow you to gain level 3 without having to fight the enemy jungler for Rift Scuttler. This is the case for most games but not all so always keep tabs on when champions appear in lane. In most cases, you do not want to fight the enemy jungler early on as Kayn needs more levels as well as items to be able to 1v1. You can also go for a greedier clear by adding Wolves and leaving Rift Scuttler till last. You risk not securing the Rift Scuttler if you do this but you still get level 3 because of Wolves.

Alternatively, you can start your own or your enemy's Raptors. When do you this, position yourself inside the camp where the big Raptor would normally spawn, AA the big Raptor, wait for the Raptors to group up and then kaynq.png. Continue to AA the big Raptor until your kaynq.png is back up and that should finish the camp. Instead of getting kaynw.png at level 2, get kayne.png and use it to get to Red Buff.

Early Game Back to Top

506.png
You do not wanna take any risks here. It is pivotal that you do not die early as that will delay your transformation and allow the enemy jungler to gain an advantage over you, especially if they killed you.

Generally, I determine where I start based on where I want to gank first, which is determined by what form I want to get. For example, if I wanted to gank bot lane first, I would start top side so I hit level 3 bot side. This is bit harder if you start blue side but doable by starting at Blue or enemy Raptors.

kayne.png is what makes Kayn an exceptional ganker as you can avoid wards and gank from unique positions. When ganking either a pushed bot or top lane, utilize Baron and Dragon pit. Even if the tribush is warded, they will have limited time to react. If you have to gank from another angle, you can use the tribush near Gromp. For mid lane, there is not really any positional advantage that kayne.png will give.

Successful ganks early will allow you to gain your transformation pre 10 minutes but in most cases you will be looking at 10-15 minutes unless you are having a bad game. Unfortunately, there is no way to gauge which form is leading so you will have to keep an eye out. The amount of orbs you get will increase after 10 minutes and once again after 15 minutes.

Mid Game (Shadow Assassin) Back to Top

506.png

Level 7-13

  • Begin to max kaynw.png if you are going for the Shadow Assassin.
  • Your transformation will give you the biggest power spike in the game, providing increased roaming, damage and pick potential.
  • Use your mobility from kayne.png to invade the enemy jungler and gank lanes from other angles.
  • Ganking and applying pressure should be your main concern.
  • Use the increased range of kaynw.png so you can mark your target with kaynr.png.
  • As long as you are not behind, you should be able to assassinate squishy heroes.
  • Although you have added mobility, you yourself are still very squishy and crowd control can easily result in your death.

Late Game (Shadow Assassin) Back to Top

506.png

Level 14-18

  • Your ability to assassinate will get harder and harder as enemies get items such as 3026.png and 3157.png, so you need to choose the right time to go for your target. Never start a fight or you will get killed and most times it will not be a worthwhile trade.
  • Look for enemies out of position, your pick potential is still one of the best in the game, however; take note of any abilities they may have to use to escape or CC you and use kaynr.png to counter.
  • Always look to go around with kayne.png, your ability to frontline is abysmal.

Mid Game (Rhaast) Back to Top

506.png

Level 7-13

  • Your transformation will give you the biggest power spike in the game, providing more sustain, increased Crowd Control and more front line prowess.
  • kaynw.png is now essential to hit, providing a knock up.
  • Just because your sustain is better does not mean you can always survive the front line yourself. Crowd Control will still allow enemies to burst you down before you can heal with kaynpassive.png.
  • Wait until you can get a substantial heal from kaynr.png if low in team fights, but don't wait too long! Prioritize high HP targets for a bigger self heal and damage.

Late Game (Rhaast) Back to Top

506.png

Level 14-18

  • The more HP enemies get the more damage you deal, prioritize tanks in fights but try to hit and many enemies with kaynw.png as you can.
  • At this stage, you should use kaynr.png as a heal. If you can execute a low HP tank you can but keep in mind whether the enemy has defensive abilities, items or if they can 4.png into their team and leave you out of position.
  • Getting kited is your worst enemy. If you can't deal damage, you can't heal or use your ultimate.
