Primary (Domination)


The purpose of this page to increase your burst damage. Take for both forms.
  • Electrocute.png?width=32 works with both of Kayn's forms bringing more burst damage.
  • Sudden%20Impact.png?width=32 will proc with kaynq.png.
  • Zombie%20Ward.png?width=32 provides increased vision control which is great for finding picks.
  • Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32 pairs nicely with kayne.png allowing Kayn to initiate from different angles. You can also use Ravenous%20Hunter.png?width=32 on Rhaast for more durability during fights.

Secondary (Sorcery)


The%20Ultimate%20Hat.png?width=32 and Celerity.png?width=32 provides better roaming and pick potential. Works best with Shadow Assassin, allowing our kaynr.png to be off CD more often.


Secondary (Resolve)


If you require more defensive stats, especially in the early game; 5abd57da0f30230001f3edd9?width=32 is a great rune that will transition from a defensive rune into an offensive one. Bone%20Plating.png?width=32 provides extra survivability throughout the game.

The Darkin Scythe (Passive)

  • Dealing damage to champions causes them to drop orbs.
  • Once he bar has been filled you can choose to become either the Shadow Assassin (Ranged) or Rhaast (Melee).
  • This is decided by whether you have collected orbs from more melee or ranged champions.
  • If you do not want to pick the one you have been given, you can wait 4 minutes for the alternate form.
  • You must transform on the summoning platform and will gain homeguard after it.

  • The Shadow Assassin your basic attacks and abilities deal post-mitigation damage as bonus magic damage.
  • This can be refreshed by using kaynr.png.

  • Rhaast you will heal for post-mitigation damage that you deal with spells against enemy champions.

Reaper Slash (Q)

  • You dash forward and then spin your scythe dealing physical damage on both instances.
  • You can use this to go through some walls.

  • The Shadow Assassin has the same ability.

  • Rhaast both instances deal a percentage of your target's maximum health.
  • This deals bonus damage to monsters.

Blade's Reach (W)

  • After a short delay, Kayn will swing his scythe dealing physical damage in a line in front of him.
  • You are unable to do anything while he is in animation.
  • Enemies hit are slowed, which decays over 1.5 seconds.

  • As the Shadow Assassin the range is increased by 200.
  • The slow is also increased to 2 seconds.
  • The Shadow Assassin will leave a living shadow to cast the ability, allowing you to perform other actions.

  • Rhaast will add a 1 second knockup to enemies hit.

Shadow Step (E)

  • When activated, Kayn will gain bonus movement and will be ghosted (ignored unit collision).
  • Getting CCed will end Shadow Step.
  • Upon entering terrain you will be healed and you will gain extended duration of Shadow Step.
  • The extended duration will not be granted if you are in combat with enemy champions.
  • If you engage in combat after the extended duration, it will immediately be reduced to 1.5 seconds.
  • After leaving terrain the extended duration will be reduced to 1.5 seconds, unless you re-enter terrain.

  • The Shadow Assassin cannot be slowed and will remove any.
  • Upon entering terrain the bonus movement will increase from 40%  to 70% for the remaining duration.

  • Rhaast has the same ability.

Umbral Trespass (R)

  • Your basic attacks and abilities apply Umbral Trespass for a few seconds.
  • The enemy will be marked and you will be able to infest them.
  • During this time the target is revealed and you become untargetable.
  • Upon reactivation or at the end of the duration you will damage your target and remove yourself.
  • Your position will depend on where your cursor from the target.

  • The Shadow Assassin will gain 200 range.
  • Upon removing yourself for the target the cooldown of kaynpassive.png will be refreshed.

  • Rhaast's damage is modified dealing a percentage of the target's maximum health.
  • He is also healed 70% of pre-mitigation damage.

1039.png - Your standard jungle start on Kayn.
2031.png - Get this instead of 3x 2003.png, will give enough sustain for first clear and saves gold.
3340.png - Don't forget to buy this before leaving base, change to 3364.png at level 9.

Core Items

1400.png - Aim to complete this first, while getting 3706.png on your first back.

3142.png - Complete this after your choice of boots. Gives you a movement speed boost when paired with kayne.png. You can choose to skip this and rush 3147.png instead or sell it later on if you feel it is not necessary.

3147.png - Very important contribution to your burst damage thanks to the passive, a must have.

3814.png - Vital for survival because you are essentially a glass cannon.

1412.png - Aim to complete this first, while getting 3715.png on your first back.

3071.png - Essential for consistent damage, will also provide a nice boost of health and CDR.

3047.png - Get this against AD heavy teams.

3111.png - Get this against teams with high magic damage or many crowd control effects.

Situational Items

3026.png - A great item that gives you a second life, generally a must have on Shadow Assassin. For Rhaast, if you need to build more defensively then I would skip this.

3033.png - Only get this if you need Grievous Wounds.

3036.png - If the enemy team is stacking armor go for this, compliments extremely well with a Lethality build.

3156.png - When against heavy magical burst damage, you will need to incorporate a 3155.png into your build, generally as your first item. You can then go back to your core build and complete it later.

3147.png - If you find yourself ahead as Rhaast then you can build this after 3071.png. It will allow you to reach your 40% CDR cap and also give you better assassination potential.

3812.png - Although this is very much an offensive item, it also works extremely well as a defensive item as well. If your team has a front line tank already, this will allow you to sustain yourself in fights with your abilities.

1413.png - If you are the only front line on your team then you will probably have to build this or you will not be able to live through a fight. You can also get 3711.png if you prefer. 

3065.png - This is great because it works with your kaynpassive.png. Build this as an alternative to 3156.png if the enemy team has magical damage but not enough to kill you in one combo.

3075.png - Take against full AD teams and/or you need Grievous Wounds.

3143.png - Take this over 3075.png if you require defense against crits.

3742.png - Consider rushing this if you are forced to go 1413.png, it will give you extra boost in tankiness while also aiding in ganks.

3748.png - With a HP heavy build this comes in handy if you need that extra bit of damage.

How does my transformation work?

Every time Kayn deals damage to champions, every instance of damage will grant one orb (damage over time effects such as 2033.png do not grant more orbs). If you damage more ranged champions, you will get access to the Shadow Assassin, while melee gives you Rhaast. You can wait 4 minutes for the alternate form when the bar is complete to get your desired form. Once you transform, it is permanent and your abilities will change depending on the form.

Each form has its own benefits and the better form changes from game to game.

Which abilities change for the different forms?

A majority of your ability have different effects based on the form you choose with the Shadow Assassin gaining extra damage and Rhaast extra sustain. Refer to the link at the top of the abilities section for a more detailed description.

Champion Select

  • Decide here whether you want to go Shadow Assassin or Rhaast.
  • Base your decision on what your team needs and what the enemy has.

Level 1-4

  • Choose a jungle route and keep an eye on the enemy jungler (watch for which lanes leash)
  • Try to gank lanes that will get you your preferred forms, however; don't ignore lanes that can be ganked.
  • It is better to get your transformation and wait four minutes than risk getting it much later.
  • Start ganks with kayne.png and go through terrain to avoid ward and get behind the enemy.
  • Follow up with kaynw.png and use kaynq.png to dash towards them once they start running away.

Level 5-6

  • Your jungle clear will be much faster once you have three levels of kaynq.png.
  • You can use this to your advantage and steal camps, Raptors is the easiest.
  • kaynr.png does not provide much of a power spike so use it to dodge spells or execute enemies.

Level 7-13

  • Begin to max kaynw.png if you are going for the Shadow Assassin.
  • Your transformation will give you the biggest power spike in the game, providing increased roaming, damage and pick potential.
  • Use your mobility from kayne.png to invade the enemy jungler and gank lanes from other angles.
  • Ganking and applying pressure should be your main concern.
  • Use the increased range of kaynw.png so you can mark your target with kaynr.png.
  • As long as you are not behind, you should be able to assassinate squishy heroes.
  • Although you have added mobility, you yourself are still very squishy and crowd control can easily result in your death.

Level 14-18

  • Your ability to assassinate will get harder and harder as enemies get items such as 3026.png and 3157.png, so you need to choose the right time to go for your target. Never start a fight or you will get killed and most times it will not be a worthwhile trade.
  • Look for enemies out of position, your pick potential is still one of the best in the game, however; take note of any abilities they may have to use to escape or CC you and use kaynr.png to counter.
  • Always look to go around with kayne.png, your ability to frontline is abysmal.

Level 7-13

  • Your transformation will give you the biggest power spike in the game, providing more sustain, increased Crowd Control and more front line prowess.
  • kaynw.png is now essential to hit, providing a knock up. 
  • Just because your sustain is better does not mean you can always survive the front line yourself. Crowd Control will still allow enemies to burst you down before you can heal with kaynpassive.png.
  • Wait until you can get a substantial heal from kaynr.png if low in team fights, but don't wait too long! Prioritize high HP targets for a bigger self heal and damage.

Level 14-18

  • The more HP enemies get the more damage you deal, prioritize tanks in fights but try to hit and many enemies with kaynw.png as you can.
  • At this stage, you should use kaynr.png as a heal. If you can execute a low HP tank you can but keep in mind whether the enemy has defensive abilities, items or if they can 4.png into their team and leave you out of position.
  • Getting kited is your worst enemy. If you can't deal damage, you can't heal or use your ultimate.
