Summoner Spells Back to Top

12.png4.png This is the normal top lane spells I take and i highly recommend

14.png4.png  I take ignite when I support depending on the situation but never top because teleport and flash are essential for Maokai to make a difference in game

11.png4.png The usual jungle start

3.png4.png My usual support start but you can take ignite if the matchup calls for it.

This is a normal skill max order for Maokai.

Ranged champs E>q first
Mele Champs q>e first

Never max E second no matter what matchup because it isn't reliable damage. Minions and other champions can get in the way from the target your after so always max w second e last.

Keep in mind that e is 60 mana at level 1 so don't constantly throw saplings or you will go oom.
You never want to max e 2nd because it is unreliable  because minions can attract the sapling. Maxing w second is more beneficial because it is percent health damage and it is also a point and click root.

still max  R>Q>W>E regardless the ability you start

yONkALD.png

An amazing passive that gives you great sustain in lane.

tOQEg3o.png

A great ability that cancels most jumps if timed right and is also your main damage ability

E7ifjtY.png

A point and click root which is honestly one of the best abilities in his kit purely because you can lock down fed enemies which allows your team to blow him or her up.

e7VUrjz.png

Your little suicide bombers that slow the enemy team. Also can act as a ward at max rank for 1 minute which is great.

nmhWOiD.png

Yes you read that right 20% damage reduction while your allies are in your ult. Now you may ask yourself why isn't maokai played more and my answer is I HAVE NO CLUE. :)

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

This is my usual start because i like to do more ap damage then sustained damage from sunfire
    good start against ad bruisers
Highest win rate starting item when going gunfire build
    Good sustain
Good in easy matchup and you know you will be roaming a lot for assists or kills
    Against hard ad lanes

Core Items

    good for sustain
Strong starting item if you want to do damage. With the new passive that gives you mana when taking damage, you are now able to sustain through fights.
These boots are all situational but are the core boots. Swiftness and mercs you get most of time
    Top example build
    Example jungle build.
    Example support build
good item with roa, combine this with sunfire for a lot of damage.
Strong item when ahead and when the enemy team has a lot of ap.
Was nerfed so isn't as good as before. Buy if your midlane is constantly being pressured
These are your two options for the jungle. I pref cinder because of the tank stats but runic is as good because you get tanky from your ult.
This is core if you wanna go ROA. I go this build because i like to do more than just sustained damage when out of lane.
Great for passive as a tank but only get when enemy team has burst champs or a lot off cc/peel
Strong pairing in current meta and strong on Maokai
Highest win rate in current patch
If your ahead. Build after visage- gauntlet-sunfire

Situational Items

I normally go spirit because it helps with my passive
    all situational.
Good item for mana and cdr but i personally prefer randuins cause of the active,
do not buy this item because it is a waste
only if really ahead and you can end game before 35
good item if your team lacks siege
Maokai doesn't need any if the actives and the spell vamp isn't fully applied.
3800.png this item is a great starting item if you are behind or not winning lane because its active is still strong for engaging but it doesn't give you the ap that ROA gives

3027.pngmy normal first item that gives you the damage to dive the back line or peel for you carries. I like ROA a lot because it gives you some burst and the way the meta is right now sustained damage won't do a whole lot because there are so many tank killers out there that sustained damage isn't as good as it used to be. The burst on Maokai fits my play style of trying to bully your lane opponent and constantly trying to gain advantages in lane.

3065.pngThis item is my normal mr item because the passive helps with Maokai's passive healing

3742.pnganother strong item that I get because of the passive slow which help with sticking on to targets

3025.png another slowing item similar to dead mans plate that i normally get because it offers you more armor than randuins but i prefer randuins more because of the crit reduction passive.

3001.png Strong item right now that is very good when you are ahead. The Passive is very strong and is good for your team when against a lot of ap

3143.png This is my usual second item or 3rd depending on the situation. Gives you health armor and crit reduction.

3048.png do not build this item because maokai needs the tankiness provided by ROA and ROA has a lot more sustain in lane than this item.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

This is a easy matchup and shouldn't require any jungle assistance. I would start the usual ROA or Righteous  glory in this matchup then go into a FH or Randuins. If behind however rush a frozen heart.

VS

Akali

Easy

Akali is weak early on so use that to your advantage. Always bring a pink for her w. Usual starting build into spirit visage

VS

Alistar

Medium

Its a farm lane and you can both peel off each other.

VS

Amumu

Medium

In the jungle you can 1v1 amumu but his ult can be devastating. Try to put more presence throughout the map. and in TF make sure your ult is on while he ults

VS

Anivia

Medium

She can peel you off with her q or e but once you get onto her it will be hard for her to get you off because of your slows and point and click root.

VS

Annie

Medium

while playing against her as a support depending on when she has her stun will determine when to go in. When she doesn't go in, when she has her stun play off.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

You can dodge his ult with your w and knock him back. Also his w is useless because maokai is a champ that gets up in your face to attack you.

VS

Azir

Hard

Just an annoying champ with a lot of escapes and he can ult you away if your on him. Once he gets rylais it gets even harder to get onto him

VS

Bard

Medium

bard is really strong right now and his stun/slows can be annoying but go in on the adc and he shouldn't be much of a problem

VS

Blitzcrank

Easy

Don't get hooked by blitz and he's useless. Go in on the adc and always watch were blitz goes because if he hooks you into tower you are doomed.

VS

Brand

Hard

Brand is annoying to play against because of all the poke he has. This lane is hell and you need to call for jungle help to make sure brand doesn't get ahead.

VS

Braum

Medium

Braum also has a lot of cc which can counter your abilities but if you get level 2 first all in adc and get a cheese kill. This will snowball your lane and ultimately make braum not much of a problem.

VS

Caitlyn

Hard

She has range on you and can poke you down easily. She can also stay away from you with her e and w. So try to lock her down and let your team burst her in fights.

VS

Cassiopeia

Hard

Extremely pokey early game so look for early defensive items. A cowl rush is preferred then into your regular starting items whether it be icb or Roa

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Don't let him poke you down and allow him to let you. When you all in do so before 6 because his true damage isn't affected by your ult damage reduction.

VS

Corki

Medium

As a support look to control the bush area and make sure that once cork over steps for a minion he pays the price for it. Also don't eat all of his e damage because it will shred you early on.

VS

Darius

Hard

Don't let him get stacks to much stacks on you because his passive while win him the 1v1. poke him down with your  maokaisapling2.png  and maokaitrunkline.png then when low enough all in him with your w e q combo.

VS

Diana

Medium

Get a early defensive item then look to fight her because pre 6 she is weak and you should be able to cheese out a kill. After 6 however the lane sort of evens out but by then you should have cowl then going into your sheen.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

If you can get a kill pre 6 that will allow you to snowball but once mundo gets to a certain point in the game he is unkillable. Just poke him out of lane early because he onset strong early.

VS

Draven

Easy

He has no dash so get on top of him with your w and chunk him with your adc. Ping before going in and make dravens life a living hell

VS

Ekko

Medium

weak early on. don't let him proc his passive off or stun you with his w. All in him before he gets his ult so he can't turn the fight around. He builds tank just like you except he is more mobil. Don't eat his q's and make sure that you do damage and don't allow him to proc his passive

VS

Elise

Hard

strong early game jungle and good fighter so don't look to counter bank as much early. You should look to counter jungle or become more of a presence around the map.

VS

Evelynn

Easy

she is weak early on and you should try to invade her. By the time she starts to hit power spike you should have some defensive stats and she shouldn't be a problem

VS

Ezreal

Medium

hes a slippery booger and can be annoying with his poke. Make sure to w onto him when his e is down and peel him off your adc.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

all of his damage is his w and you can disrupt it with your q so he is useless. just destroy this useless champ.

VS

Fiora

Medium

This lane matchup is easy pre 6. Rush gauntlet. your q cancels her q so when she dashes for her passive counter it. If her passive is facing her back off if your not going to miss creeps. you always want her passive behind you so she doesn't get the speed boost. bait out her w with your e once you w in. After her w is gone you take advantage of your passive and q. You will chunk her. Don't try anything cheesy early because she is still fiora. If she ults you kite back and q to cancel her q. She does however out scale you because she does true damage and armor won't do anything once she has items.

VS

Fizz

Medium

he's very very very slippery and so annoying once he hits 6. Get a early defensive item and just set up ganks because once he all ins you he because very vulnerable. Also you can dodge his ultimate with your w.

VS

Galio

Medium

You can disrupt his ultimate but he is very annoying with his shield because you are ap. He is immobile so tell your jungler it is free for him to come top and look for tp ganks bot.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

don't get hit by barrels he has a ticking time bomb and can be hard to fight early on.

VS

Garen

Medium

This matchup can go either way because Garen has a lot of sustain and so do you after catalyst. Look to poke him down with q and all in. keep in mind his ult is true damage. Constantly look for a q e combo to poke down. Go double dorans for more mana sustain.

VS

Gnar

Medium

Very pokey take advantage of mega gnar pre 6. Mini gnar destroys you in lane. Start e in this matchup and don't get poked down early. try to survive till you get catalyst. When gnar goes to ult you in mega gnar form w into him so that you will dodge the stun or knock back. Mostly a skill matchup.

VS

Gragas

Medium

Not that strong anymore however he still has good presence early. look for counter ganks and to make more of a presence in the game.

VS

Graves

Medium

very annoying champion early on but once you get your iceborn you will be fine. Just don't give him a kill early and use the brushes to help you get cs.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

has a decent amount of sustain but does go mana hungry so watch his mana bar and all in pre 6

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Start e look to destroy his turrets. Dodge his stun no matter what because if he gets that off then he will chunk you. Look for a gank early to set him behind and look to hit 6 before him because the damage reduction will win you the fight. you can get some MR early but i would suggest to go catalyst into roa or righteous.

VS

Illaoi

Easy

your to tanky for illaoi early on.  bully her in lane and gain an advantage. get gauntlet in this matchup

VS

Irelia

Medium

skill based matchup. you don't have much kill potential but your q can interrupt her q. look to kill her or all in before level 4/5 as that is when she gets strong.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

poke him down with your q and don't let him auto you for his passive damage because it does a lot of damage.

VS

Jax

Medium

extremely strong right now so look to cheese him early on. once you get catalyst you out sustain him. once he hits 6 you and him get tankier. q him back to make sure he doesn't stun you

VS

Jayce

Hard

pokey annoying lane. start e and ask for jungle banks because he will look to be aggressive early on.

VS

Malphite

Medium

you can poke him out very easily. break his shield with autos and then e q combo him. force him out of lane. get double dorians for more mana region if you like and just constantly force him out of lane or kill him. once he hits 6 he has 2 forms of escapes and also an engage that can setup easy kill for banks. ward up and try to cheese level 2 with your passive.

VS

Nasus

Medium

a lot of people see this to be a hard matchup for maokai but I don't see it this way at all. Poke nasus down with q e combo. double dorans and catalyst gives you insane sustain so poking nasus out of lane is easy. fight him when his e is down. try to cheese him level 2. Once you gain that advantage hard freeze wave and zone him off. Ward and make sure you don't die to nasus because he can snowball the lane.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Dodge his axes. There are two types of olaf players that i have encountered. Those that cheese level 2 on you and those that farm till level 3 then try for trades. As a Maokai you must poke every matchup down to gain a lead. Olaf is similar in the sense that he relies on poke to win him lane. Once olaf hits 1 axe they most likely go in. Dodge his axes and he can't stick onto you. Q him back if he goes for his axes and poke him down with q e combo. double dorians and catalyst will give you endless sustain against olaf to survive early game. When you W onto him you will dodge his axe so use that to your advantage when going in. Once he throws his axe W in and he will have a 7 second cd on it.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Pantheon is one of the strongest duelist top lane. look to trade with him with your q and passive. don't stand in his e. A trick for when he w e combos you is when the stun is up w into him to get behind him so that you don't take the full burst of his e. Don't get poked down to much. to avoid this w into him when he goes to Q you if he's not in a big wave.

VS

Poppy

Medium

can go either way. you can kill poppy pre 6. after 6 her ult allows her to escape your all ins and she then becomes very hard to gank. when she doesn't have her shield trade with her.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Has been nerved hard the past couple patches and with tank meta being strong right now this matchup comes down to getting good trades with your w and q. once you get sunfire the lanes gets a lot easier and you can stomp him

VS

Riven

Medium

Take armor quintessences. she is hard to kill so just look to farm. be careful of her early levels. in this matchup i would  Gauntlet then go to a righteous glory for the sustain or if you get ahead ROA. Whatever you do don't feed her, try to survive till you hit 6 then you the matchup becomes easier. When riven goes to let ult you w at the right time you can dodge her ult and get behind her. This also works for her 3rd q knock-up and stun if timed correctly.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Skill based matchup. Get catalyst and Merc Treds and this lane shouldn't be hard. Don't start e in this matchup even though he isn't mele.

VS

Shen

Medium

Shen can be extremely annoying but poke him down with your combo and all in him when his e is down. He wins fights so just farm.DO NOT get close to him while he's at his tower. He will tant you and you will be chunked. Always let your team know when shen is 6 as well.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

early on you can kill her but once she hits 6 or gets her item first item completed back off. Try to cheese her early at level 2 and call for an early gank. In this matchup rush gauntlet into ROA if really ahead or righteous if even or behind. Your q cancels her ult which is very useful when she dives on you but her e q does so much damage and her w just melts you later on. Just peel her off your carries in team fights and she shouldn't be a problem at all.

VS

Trundle

Hard

Hard counter don't pick Maokai into trundle. He is a tank buster and you are a tank. Just try to farm the best you can if you verse a trundle. DONT fight whatever you do, just peel him off

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Fight him before 6 when his range bar isn't full. if its full do not fight him because he will win the trade. Get catalyst then go defensive either randuins or frozen heart. He will outsell you because tryndamere is a late game monster. cc him and just peel him off your carries the best you can.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

maokai's counter and out scales. Get hex drinker and farm the best you can. call for ganks and make sure vlad doesn't snowball.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Your q cancels his e. kill him pre 6 and then this lane is easy after that. If he reaches 6 the lane will become a little harder because his ult can set up ganks easily.

VS

Zilean

Easy

You are just to tanky for zilean. Dodge his q's and w into him if he goes to throw a bomb. force fights pre 6 if he's not in a big wave. Don't get stunned ever because the lane will shift his way if you constantly get stunned.

Early game Back to Top

Top lane

Early levels maokai has cd reliant damage as he does throughout the entire game. How you want to play maokai is depending on the matchup is at level 2 try to cheese or trade with your opponent. Theres a trick you can use before walking into lane. when your in fountain Q 3 times, this will give you 3 proc on your passive. This is a great trick because at level 2 when you go to cheese or trade, once you w in they will try to return damage so your q will knock them back and slow and your passive will heal the damage they just put out. This is a good trick for winning trades early on which translates into snowballing your lane. Do not try to cheese hard match-ups early because they will out damage you.
Getting level 2 first is huge for Maokai because the w q combo can chunk early on. After level 2 however you just want to look to farm or poke down with your q and e. At level 6 this is Maokai's next power spike because his ult makes a big difference in team fights and in 1v1's because of the damage reduction. In some matchup's everything becomes easier once you get to 6 so read the match-ups for more information.
To push waves with maokai e q the backline or just q the back line when you have points in it

Roam! Roam! Roam! in order to make a difference as maokai you need to roam a lot early and set ur team up for kills, whether it be telling your bottle to ward back bush for ganks or even after you push wave to tower to roam mid and kill mid. You need to constantly watch your map and see who is aggressive in lane and what lane you can get a kill easy when ganking.

Jungle

As for jungle maokai isn't effected by the cd reliant abilities. He sustains through his passive in the jungle and his ganks cause flashes or deaths. Look to split time between farming and banking because maokai isn't a strong camp clearer like Yi or shyvanna. Look at maokai as being similar to garages in a way that early game is his specialty for ganking. WARDS! i can't stress this enough even i need to buy more wards. Warding early game is crucial as a jungler. Whether it be the solo bush near mid lane in the river or even counter judging wards that help everyone see were the enemy jungle is. Wards win games because they give everyone n your team information. This information allows them to either play aggressive or defensive. The new warding jungle item is great for solo que because its a mini sightstone for junglers which is great for keeping map pressure up. Once you get the ward upgrade for your jungle item buy sweeper. Sweeper helps massively when ganking because it allows you to clear out wards and gank more because you are unseen.

Support

Support is similar to top lane that your aggressiveness relies on your abilities being up. As support still max R>Q>W>E but don't start q or e. I have found a lot of success in starting w early on because it allows for me to start fights and chunk the adc when out of position. Maokai even though not a meta support can be an extremely strong support. As Maokai support always W onto the adc never the support, unless you are peeling off the support. This is because Maokai's W early on is devastating because of the point click root that makes him invincible for the time he's going in. Don't waste saplings by throwing them at the adc because you will lose a ton of mana early on. Poke with your q not e as support because most supports have a dash and saplings aren't really reliant for damage more as a zoning tool. If you fall behind in lane peel for your adc with your q and w. Remember that your q cancels all if not most dashes. This includes leonas E, If timed correctly you can stop it.

Mid game Back to Top

Top lane

Mid game is were Maokai strives and were he becomes an all around monster. As Maokai you aren't the carry that puts out a ton of damage to win the team fights. Yes a fed Maokai can carry by being items ahead and all around stronger but the way to carry with Maokai is by peeling. In lower elo's people just want to dive the back line and pray that their own back line can do damage. In higher elo's and in order to win with Maokai you need to peel. There are some exceptions that you can dive the back line but mainly you must peel for your carries. Make sure that you keep your team in your ult because the 20% damage reduction is huge in fights. Also as Maokai you always have to look for Tp plays because your ganks are devastating. In soloque a lot of top laners now are taking ignite so being more of a presence around the entire map is huge. Even if you are behind as Maokai you are huge for your team because your ult plays a huge role at all points in the game and all your abilities help with peeling for your fed carries. Lastly, Objectives please for the love of god. I see this so much in my games and even i make this mistake of not forcing objectives when ahead. Maokai's ult has a 60 second cooldown at level 1. This is relatively short compared to other champions ult cd's. Use this to your advantage and force baron, towers, dragon. You also don't have to always go down midlane. You can win the game even if you rush botlane and take tower/inhib. One more thing I would like to add is that just because you are a coplanar doesn't mean you can't buy wards. Mid game is huge now because games end a lot quicker so warding is crucial to know were the enemy team is.

Jungle

Mid game is crucial for Jungle Maokai the same way that top lane Maokai. You need to force objectives and take them. If you are behind, ward and take objectives that the enemy team hasn't. At this point in the game you should have completed your cinder hulk jungle item and have boots and another item which ever you decide. Look at timers please. As a jungler you don't want to be caught top side while dragon is spawning in 10 seconds. Maokai is a strong team fighter and excels at close corner fighting because his ult can reach everyone getting full use of his 20% damage reduction.

Support

As a support the mid game and early on is similar in the fact that you need vision control over objectives at all times. You must be always checking your ward timers and trying to place them deeper into the enemy jungle when ahead. If behind ward defensively in your jungle to make sure that your jungler can farm safely and so that your adc can farm safely bot lane. At this point in the game you have to be roaming and looking for kills to snowball your solo lanes more. Always ward for your adc before roaming and tell your adc that your going to roam. Don't forget to buy a sweeper as soon as you get sightstone. When Maokai ganks a lane it will result in either a kill or flash if timed correctly, use this to your advantage and make the enemy afraid of your presence. This fear will allow your solo lanes to gain a advantage in lane.

Late Game Back to Top

Top lane

By the time you hit late game the only real damage you will be doing is to the squishies. If your carries are ahead dive the carries and lock them down. If your carries are even or behind then just peel hard for them. Your q cancels most if not all dashes so push back assassins and this that dive your back line. This part of the game is very hard and can be draining because one mistake can cost you the game. Look for objectives to force to push your lead. If behind you have to stall the game longer. Most games in this meta however don't last very long so reaching this point in the game just depends on how well a team closed out.

Jungle

Same thing as top lane in the sense that you need to peel or dive depending on situation. You need to ward up your jungle or important objectives depending on if you are behind or ahead. As jungle you play a huge part in smiting to kill objectives so always watch the dragon or barons health and make sure you don't smite to early because late game 1 objective swing can change the game entirely.

Support

Ward. Ward. Ward. This is the most important thing in the game and i don't see it enough in silver so hopefully stressing it will spread the knowledge. As a support you have to peel for your adc because no one else will in low elo. Even if your carries are ahead as a support Maokai you must peel for your carries. If your team is really ahead your game wouldn't be in the late game so always peel for your carries late game.

You want know why you have to be a Maokai main Back to Top

 Here is why :)

Pros and Cons Back to Top

Pros:

  •  Short CD ult and ult is good for protecting your team.
  • - Tanky Mid and Late game.
  • - Easy ganks when Jungling / TP ganks when toplane
  • - E is good for Poke/zoning and can be used to ward lanes or check bushes before face checking
  • - Q is low mana cost and can be used really well to push lanes when used with E.
  • - Has a strong early game in all matchups if you use the passive trick (read the early game for that trick)
  • - great wave clear early on
  • - has a lot of sustain with his passive
  • - W makes you invulnerable so use this to dodge ults or skill shots
  • - He is always in the game regardless if you feed or not because he's a amazing peeler and his ult is huge in Team fights.

Cons:
  • - Ult is a pain for mana. But with new ROA you can ult longer
  • - Is really bad against high Damage Enemies
  • - Rather slow so needs boots, also his AA are quiet slow animation.
  • - Gets Rekt by AA champions at lower levels such as Teemo.
  • - E is a lot of mana and you can't spam
  • - You run oom a lot in lane before you get catalyst
  • - He is a cd reliant champ so once you use your abilities get out.

Tips and tricks Back to Top

  1. Maokai's W is very very strong in the sense that you become untargetable for the time your under the ground.
  2. Your passive can win you trades so only trade when your passive is at 3 stacks.
  3. your e gives you vision even while in the air so never face check
  4. use saplings as wards if you ran out. lasts only 35 seconds
  5. as jungle throw your first sapling at 1:05 to get the 3 saplings down before the camps spawn
  6. Maokai's q cancels most of not all dashes so time it properly to knock them back
  7. Maokai's q from distant is a slow and close is a knock back so when someone dashes to you wait for them to come close
  8. When you W in as Maokai walk in front of your opponent so you knock them towards your team
  9. Use saplings as zoning tools.
  10. when ganking throw a sapling towards tower and walk at the enemy laner. this cuts of the escape to turret. be carful however with the enemy waves because a poor placed sapling will rid of you zoning tool.
  11. To farm with your e wait for the minion to get low throw the sapling onto the minion to kill it and the explosion will help poking down the enemy. Save your W for countering the enemies ult or cc abilities.
  12. Maokai can solo carry so don't get frustrated if behind because as Maokai you are always important to the game.
  13. Always look to the vods section for more vods so you learn more.
  14. To push waves with maokai e q the backline or just q the back line when you have points in it

Levels of Mastery of Maokai Back to Top

When to root and who to root.

Your root is the most valuable ability you have when it comes to locking down or peeling. You have to decide and use your knowledge to decide whether it is more important to peel for your carries or lock down the enemies carries. Some of you may think that this isn't hard but i promise you that this separates the good Maokai player from the bad Maokai players.

The Q dash cancel and ultimate cancel

Not many Maokai players are able to q cancel a lot of dashes that they are able to. being able to cancel dashes can turn an entire fight around. Mastering the q cancel can step your maokai game up entirely.

The W skill shot dodge

Not many people use W to its full potential. Every think when you w onto someone its just to root them so that you or your team can kill the enemy champion. But in reality Maokai's w is exactly like Master yi's q. Both champions abilities takes time to master and use to their full extent.

Farming with your saplings and using your sapling

Now i don't find this to be beneficial because it wastes a decent amount of mana and pushes the wave. If your behind do not use your saplings to farm because you will put urself even further behind because the enemy can just freeze the wave at their tower. Only farm with e when you need to push wave. Use your sapling as a ward as well  :D. Because maokai's e at max rank lasts for a minute, its practically another ward for you so use them to your advantage.
