Summoner Spells Back to Top

Flash and Ignite are really the only two summoner spells you'll want to grab as Top lane morde; but to explain why a little further take a look below.

4.png for quick escapes or the contraire; quick and unexpected initiations onto your opponent. The amount of plays that [summoner spell] flash opens up are by far too much to pass up on, so try not to forget this skill!

14.png to give you that extra UMPH and kill potential on your opponent. It stacks extremely well with your ultimate Children of the Grave and will surely help secure the kill which will also in turn give you their clone to do with as you so please.

Other viable options would be:

12.png to enable you with more flexibility and mobility around the map (as Morde is a rather slow champ). You can use this to gank another lane to help snowball your team or to simply get back to lane quicker to shove the creep wave in your favour and make your opponent miss out on exp/gold.

21.png if Morde's passive Iron Man isn't enough of a bonus shield for you, then feel free to take this handy summoner with you. It will surely surely surely ketch your opponents off guard and make you all the more invincible.

99% of the time you will want to start with your E skill. The only time you might not want to do this is if a lv 1 fight breaks out and your teammate gets caught and you want to level your W skill in order to shield them from a distance to provide them with bonus stats. Your E is your highest form of wave clear, your main consistant damage output, your poking method, and your best AP scaling skill; so you definately want to max this out first.

Next I like to max Morde's W Creeping Death. This skill is what will make morde win more close up brawls than either your Q or E can. This skill keeps a constant shield on you that not only gives you armor/mr bonuses but also regens your passive's armor and does an overwhelming amount of damage. You can also use this skill to aid your jungler if they gank/turret dive your lane, or to even throw onto an ally creep to help you deal some extra poke damage to your enemy or help get CS from a distance. A downside of this however is that it will push your creep wave fairly quickly. Whenever an enemy jumps on you (for example) 64_64.png or 24_64.png just pop your W and fight your way to a victorious 1v1 melee brawl; if they're stupid enough to continue fighting you that is :P

Lastly I  max my Q last as I just find it the least useful. Don't get me wrong, this skill does a ton of damage and wave clears really well as well but I think it's fine at level 1 until further into the game.

** Obviously take your ultimate whenever available as the change in it between each level is quite massive and extremely helpful!

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

This is what I start with 99.9% of the time, regardless of my opponent. It suits me well as an aggressive laner and builds right into Morde's main core item!
Decent typical start to help fend off some auto attacks and give you some good early HP+Regen.
If you're up against a Xin (or similar champs) and are terrified. The cloth armor can build into either Thornmail or Zhonyas.

Core Items

These items make Morde the God he is.
Whichever one suits you best. If they have too much MR I go with the Gunblade, has a nice slow effect too.

Situational Items

Solid items on Morde if armor is needed.
Choose depending if you need more MR or MPen.
If you need some MR + Other great stats. Just some overall tankyness and sustain.

VS

Aatrox

Hard

He lifesteals through your damage since Morde does not output extremely consistant damage. Can easily burst him but his passive brings him right back and at that time you would have already used your burst.

VS

Ahri

Hard

Ahri is extremely tough for Morde. She has impeccable range, great mobility, CC.. She pretty much has everything you lack. The best you can do is shove and force her to shove back since she uses mana and you don't. Don't get hit by her Q, especially not on the way back since it does True Damage then. Poke her if you ever get the chance, but don't count on it.

TL;DR Ask for a lane swap :P

VS

Akali

Easy

Morde counters this girl in every aspect. When she goes invisible, use your AoE E skill to hit her entire shroud of stealth. When she comes onto you with her ult, Pop W and unload on her. Say hello to your new pet, it's Akali.

VS

Azir

Hard

Azir has great range and burst potential as well as a quick getaway. There isn't anything you can do against him since he uses his sand soldiers to fight (while he's at a distance) and what sucks is that you can't build your passive armor since you can't hit his soldiers. You pretty much lose from level 1, and you'll certainly be buying a lot of pots.

If possible try to lane swap if you can do better against the other lanes' champ. Otherwise try to last hit with your E as well as you can while taking minimal harass from Azir.

Good luck

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Cho has a lot of sustain and damage all while being tanky. This one is a skill matchup so basically as long as you practice Morde enough, you'll win 9 times out of 10.

VS

Darius

Hard

Darius does DoT (damage over time) from his passive. Which means your shield is almost a non-factor unless you go all in as soon as you get it stacked up. It's pretty much a matter of if you can burst him before he true damage bursts you.

VS

Diana

Easy

In the rare instance that you face Diana, you should wreck her with little to no problem. Thankfully, Diana is a melee champ just like Morde. Diana is also an "All-In" champ but she should never be able to burst you if you play correctly and you should easily be able to turn the tides :) Happy winnings ~

VS

Ekko

Hard

Ekko is much too evasive and fluid to be taken on 1vs1 by a Mordekaiser. Your best bet is to run... Lol, not much helpful but it's the truth.

If running isn't an option, do what you can when he comes in close to destroy/burst you.

VS

Elise

Hard

She just does too much damage to sustain through or anything. I haven't quite figured out the way to beating this hoe yet. One of the two champs I hate facing dearly.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Similar to Xin zhao, but as long as you don't willingly dual her you should be fine poking her out of lane and out CSing her.

VS

Fizz

Easy

Fizz is a melee-ranged champion despite being an AP Carry. What this means is the only way he can do dmg to you is if he comes in on you, and that's when Morde excels; in close combat. Your cooldowns are also shorter than his, plus you have range on him so you can harass him for free. Another advantage you have on him is that he uses mana whilst you don't :)

Be wary of his ultimate and don't let him roam. Shove him in and keep your area warded to avoid ganks. A roaming fizz might get fed, and a fed fizz is a scary fizz... despite his appearance :P

VS

Galio

Medium

You don't have to worry about dying from a Galio, but because of his passive and skill set, he becomes noticably difficult for you to kill later on. Be cautious of ganks, as that will be the main determining factor in this lane for you. Also keep in mind he has natural sustain and can heal off your spells occasionally whereas you do not.

1v1 you win. Get camped your chances of winning reduce significantly (as with all lanes/matchups).

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Gangplank is too mana hungry to effectively beat you out of lane and if he comes in for a close up brawl you still win. Just hope they don't get any lucky crits hah!

VS

Garen

Easy

A lot of people say this is a hard matchup but it really isn't. Literally pop your W on yourself, E him, and press Q as soon as you see him running to you with his silence skill. Literally Legitimately works every single time. Just be quick enough, it isn't that hard! :) He's only a bit scary come late game because he's just one of those crazy tanks; but your ult still does good work on him!

VS

Gnar

Hard

Gnar has range on you, as well as speed. Meaning he can poke you down and out fairly easily. He can out minouver you while dealing pretty heavy damage. Try to shove in the wave and get as much CS as you can, your best bet is to get ahead early and counter-all-in him when he comes onto you in his close range form.

*You can see when he's about to transform into close range, when he does make sure you harass him constantly (from a good distance) with your E especially when he's trying to CS. Beware his gap closer and CC.

VS

Irelia

Medium

Irelia is weird, never fought her more than once or twice so I can't really say much about this matchup. I just farm safely and dual her when she comes in, but it goes even.

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

Jarvan is a tanky top laner that has a gap closer and a really good poke with not the worst mana issues. He's a champ that I dislike facing regardless of who I use. You can dual him pretty safely but a good jarvan would rather just poke you out of lane the safe way.

VS

Jax

Easy

Pop all your skills when he comes onto you. Your ult beats his in duals. You can also freely poke him when his Q (Jump) is on cooldown. Similar ish to fighting Garen.

VS

Jayce

Hard

I hate jayce.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Don't see him top lane often but when he comes in with his ult in a 1v1... Just make sure you put his dead ghost to good use :) (Burst him down when he comes in) Other than that he has pretty good poke in lane and he's ranged and doesn't use mana so just play smart.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

Similar to Xin and has a really powerful 1v1 burst. Be careful and poke him effectively.

VS

Lee Sin

Easy

He's an all in champ for the most part. You kill him.

VS

Malphite

Easy

Malphite negates AD heavy damage; but to mages he's like nothing. You make quick work of him. Not a matchup to necessarily worry about.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

You rape him but if you don't kill him quick enough he runs away so... It's just a little annoying. Plus he can roam much better than you and pick up else where so PING your MIA's!

VS

Mordekaiser

Hard

Mirror lanes are the worst. Practice more than they do and win your lane. I've never lost to another Morde before but I'm always nervous.

VS

Nasus

Medium

You can beat him as long as you don't let him mass farm his Q. He has incredible sustain and is really tanky, thankfully your ult counters him but still be wary of his Q and be aware of his Q stacks.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

You can kill her ez as long as you dodge her Spear pokes. She too like master yi however can easily escape you.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Just be careful of his early game and try to poke him without being poked back yourself. He's an extremely tough early game champ.

VS

Renekton

Easy

Your ult counters his and he's a melee champ. You win, especially when he comes in on you.

VS

Rengar

Medium

High power champion so be careful of his kit and stay away from bushes until you're ready to brawl him. Til' then try to poke him out of lane, even through his sustain from his W.

VS

Riven

Hard

Extremely hard (but doable) to brawl this champ and almost impossible to escape. Poke her without being turned on and CS your way to a lead and eventually victory. Beware her shield as it can null a fraction of your burst/poke.

VS

Shen

Easy

Nothing to worry about here unless he gets fed and too tanky to touch. You can still out CS and out push him though.

VS

Shyvana

Easy

Shyvana can be quite tricky but use your skills correctly and you'll win every fight.

VS

Singed

Easy

Easy matchup, Just don't chase. You farm better and faster than he does and out damage him + have a ranged poke to use on him. Rylais is even more exceptional on you in this matchup.

VS

Sion

Easy

Don't dual him while his ult is up.

VS

Teemo

Hard

Teemo just needs to die or something idk. Teemo is my number 1 counter no matter who I play. However the trick is that whenever he chases you to put some harass down to run away for 1 second then turn around on him quick and E him to negate his damage and do some of your own to him. Keep in mind he has DoT as well similar to Darius, but worse.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Your ult can be used as a counter to his. Don't dual him once he gets a few items. Poke and retreat.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

Extremely easy even on an off day. You out damage vlad heavily and have a similar concept as him, except you have a huge armor shield from your passive.

VS

Wukong

Medium

Similar to Xin zhao but is a little more dual-able. Play smart and don't take free harass. If he jumps on you immediately pop your W and E him. As an AoE ability, even if he tried running away using his W (clone skill) you should still be able to hit him easily.

VS

Xin Zhao

Hard

Can easily kill you at level 1. Especially if he has ghost. Not a good match up at all for the first 4-5 levels.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

This is kind of a tough matchup. If you wanted to you an start with a Doran's shield vs Yasuo and that can help you out a lot through the laning phase. Just remember that his range is similar to yours so always harass him if he tries to do so to you. What you really have to be careful about is his all in potential with his ult. Play safe, keep even with his farm, and out harass him to win your lane.

VS

Yorick

Hard

I've faced about 7 yoricks as Morde and have only really beaten 2. I went completely even with 4, and lost badly to 1. This lane is so equal to me that it's unbelievable. Play SMART and hope for the best. But not a good match up at all.

VS

Zac

Medium

A little annoying but nothing much to worry about. Try to get past his sustain and be wary of his passive/ability to set up ganks for their jungler.

Playing Morde - Gameplay&Tips Back to Top

Early Game

In the early game, Morde is quite a squishy champion so to get around these first 3-4 levels you typically want to farm a little back at a safe distance from your opponent using your E skill. Try to make sure that whenever you E the wave that you also hit your opponent as well in the same E use. Not only does this make full use of your skill but it also keeps your shield from your passive at it's maximum capacity; not to mention you'll also be shoving your opponent out of lane which is really important to do as Mordekaiser since he shoves the wave really quickly. As morde you can even poke your opponent under turret extremely easily with your E skill. Just note that when doing this you are extremely vulnerable to ganks so before you poke them under tower make sure you either have a good ward setup or know where their jungler is. At level 3 when you have all 3 skills, you can feel free to dual your opponent IF they come onto you first or if you simply want to shove them out of lane because you pushed it up too much. In most matchups you'll either win the all-in or you'll go even, which in your case either one is fine. A champion you should never ever ever dual early is 5_64.png. He will demolish you. Other champions of a similar type like 266_64.png are to be avoided as well. At least until mid+late game where you can burst them down and win a dual. Once you hit level 6, if you kept up on cs (which you ALWAYS should as Morde) you can literally 2v1 the jungler and the top laner (provided you poked your opponent a decent amount prior to their junglers gank). I've done more 2v1's at top lane without dying more times than I can count... And I can count all day... Hah. So in other words, once you hit level 6 don't be afraid to go all-in on your opponent if you see the oppertunity, as the damage you do post 6 will surely not only surprise your opponent but even you :P And by this point in the game you should have your 3145_32.png and either some pots or boots to go along with it which makes sustaining in lane real easy for you!

Mid Game

After the laning phase is over, you should prioritize your farm. As mordekaiser you typically want to have more CS/farm than your entire team. Morde is an exceptional farmer hands down so there's no excuse at all to have an unacceptable amount of farm when playing him. I've had bad my share of bad games in lane but still end with 300+ farm. My record for farm on him is 557 in a ~60 min game. Keep in mind how much farm gives, each creep is at least 20 gold and it scales as the game progresses; so if you can't grab a few kills along the way of the game, you'll have your massive farm to support you. This also means that people who underestimate farm will look at your score, think they can kill you, and then understand why the phrase "Morde es numero uno" exists. Morde isn't exactly the best roaming champ so only roam when you can gurantee that your time won't be wasted, otherwise keep to your farm and let your team know that they can depend on you late game to carry so to give you your time now to rack up your farm. Please note that your team has to be at least doing decent in their lane as you won't be helping them much for the first ~20 minutes of the game; similar to a singed; or any top lane champ for that matter.

Team fights

In team fights as morde you typically want to burst their adc with your ultimate, especially if they're even remotely fed. I've gotten multiple penta-kills (1 in ranked, several more in normals) by simply bursting their adc, and letting their adc do the work on his own team. It's quite amusing to see but can definately turn games around. By bursting the adc, you turn the fight from a 5v5 to an instant 6v4 in your favor. If you fell extremely behind all game then what you do is wait in the wing for the first 10 or so seconds of the fight to already go down or until you see their adc vulnerable and low on hp, then you walts in and finish him off. Keep in mind that Morde becomes really bursty to the point where he can even take the better half of tanks down fairly quickly with his initial burst + ignite. Feel free to burst their APC if they're the only fed one on their team, and remember that if you become low on hp and still have your ult then you can use it on a tank to gain the most hp possible as his ultimate heals him depending on the amount of hp that his target has! Also keep in mind to use your W skill on an ally rather than yourself if it'll be more use on them then you. For example if you have a 33_64.png or 154_64.pngon your team then use your W on them right before they initiate to not only deal extra damage to the enemy team but to also provide your ally with bonus resistances and last but not least to provide YOU with a maximum armor shield before you even enter the fight!

Pros & Cons Back to Top

Pros

Great scaling innate tankyness thanks to his passive
Great tank punisher thanks to ult
Great burster
Offers much more poke than the avg top lane champ
AoE spells
Easy to learn
Short Cooldowns
Does NOT use MP!!
Tremendous wave clear
Looks badass

Cons

A rather slow champ (base 340 MS)
NO ESCAPE (why you'd like to bring flash)
Squishy if you don't keep passive shield up during fights
Extremely squishy pre 6
Low damage output pre 5
No natural sustain outside of ultimate
Uses HP to cast skills
Unwantingly shoves waves

82_64.pngMordekaisers cons are essentially a non factor since they can almost all be completely taken care of with a simple few item purchases/pick ups. For example, 4.png makes up for the lack of escape (to a certain degree ofc). 3145_32.png gives morde a lot of sustain to the point where he heals from using his spells as opposed to taking damage and it only costs 1200 gold. This item can also be upgraded to extremely powerful end-game items such as the 3152_32.png or 3146_32.png. A simple 3020_32.png buy (which is core in every build) can take care of the low base Move speed. Suddenly Morde looks like the perfect champ, and that he is!
