Summoner Spells Back to Top

Take teleport every game. It is your best friend and not only allows for teleport plays to the bot lane for an easy double but also will consistently save you in lane.

The only summoner spell decision is whether you want ghost or flash. I used to prefer ghost but now I take flash almost every game but the decision is up to your discretion. You will be fine as long as you take the correct summoner in specific cases. For example if they have a Jarvan 59.png jungle and your afraid of ganks (which is basically every early game) then you need flash cause ghost wont save you from his sick mechanics.. clicking R.

Rarely I take ghost and flash in normals and build really offensively and just try to chase down and constantly 1 v 1 my lane opponent but I don't think that set is actually viable for ranked.

Also I need to mention a really important aspect; make sure and check your lane opponents summoner's when loading in. Too many times I have gone into lane and died to ignite because I just assumed the enemy had teleport. Ignite means you gotta play real safe because not only is it added true dmg but it reduces healing which is really important to the doge.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

At the beginning of season 6 I tried just about everything to get 18 points in the cunning tree so I could have that spicy 45% cdr late game but this page is just vastly superior in my experience. The only time I think its viable is when your against squishies with slows. Think Cass with rylai or something of the sort. Grasp of the undying makes 1 v 1's so easy its not even all that fun and 1 v 2's just amusing to watch your enemies crumble. When your healing like crazy due to in built life steal combined with grasp of the undying and yet still doing enough damage to 2 shot towers with q the game becomes quite entertaining.

Unyielding (1st tier of resolve tree), tough skin (second tier of resolve tree), and runic armor (3rd tier of resolve tree) are what you're going to want to run every game. Insight (4th tier of resolve tree) might be debatable but summoner spell cool down reduction is just broken. Swiftness (5th tier of resolve tree) is also just flat out better than legendary guardian. Tenacity and slow resistance means that you will catch the back line squishys and one shot them every time.

Take Sorcery (1st tier of ferocity tree), Feast (2nd tier of ferocity tree) and Vampirism (3rd tier of ferocity tree) every game no questions asked.

In the fourth tier of the ferocity tree battle trance is the best mastery. Others can be helpful in very specific situations but battle trance is by far the best. Just about anytime you get into a fight as nasus your going to need to either w or e and then walk up to the enemy champion. The time it takes to use your ability plus walk up to them alone will get you half way to the battle trance extra dmg and once you get on them for a bit its constantly up for free dmg in any situation.

The other two choices just arent good. Bounty hunter is only better if you kill 3 of the enemy champions. Sounds good but if youve killed 3 of the enemy champions its because of one of two things. Either youve not been sitting top farming and stacking so your wasting your laning phase and pushing your mid and late game back which isnt worth at all, or your insanely ahead and killing their whole team. And if you are that far ahead your gonna win no matter what mastery you take.

Double edge sword is just not good at all. The only way you don't go god mode is if you lose laning phase really hard early. This makes the chances of that happening even higher so don't take it.

So 75.png is all about that siphoningstrikenew.png siphoning strike. All you have to do is stack this thing up and mid to late game the enemy team will surrender every time. But thats the hard part.. stacking this thing up. No lies early game against those turds who play 17.png or 50.png can be difficult but against any champion once you get stacks its all over. Nasus is only a good champion if you know how to play him, and by play him I mean get those young siphoningstrikenew.png stacks. Let me give you some examples

                           10 minutes              15 minutes                20 minutes                  25 minutes

Great Stacks          175                             300                           500                              700

Good stacks           140                             260                           425                              550

Meh stacks             100                             225                           350                              450

Nasus w wither.png has to be one of the strongest cc's in the game. This ability is so broken it doesn't make sense. His w means that nobody besides the troll champs like 105.png can dive you because all you have to do is click w and they cant get away from the turret. And then late game you laugh after you wither them and dive their turret because your q's heal for more than their turret does. In late game team fights you MUST wither the carries. The only time you shouldnt wither the carries is if the carries are so far behind you dont even notice they are hitting you. Whether you have 4.png or 6.png feel free to use it to wither those carries and q them for 75% of their health.

Nasus E spiritfire.png is one of the most underrated abilities in the game. People don't understand the impact of a good nasus E. Although it is good for wave clear, faster pushing, and damage the most underrated part is the armor shred. When your in a 1 v 1 and your losing (which is rare) the only reason you are losing is that you forgot to click E and lower their armor so that your q pimp slaps them right in the neck. Use this to make tanky targets squishy and squishy targets nonexistent. It was recently changed to do percentage armor shred which changes its concept a bit. Its extremely underrated against tanks and in team fights in its current state. at level 5 (which isnt that late into the game since you're maxing it second) it does 35% armor shred. 35%. That's a ton. Say you hit a 4 or 5 man E in a team fight.. you just gave your whole team a last whisperer worth of armor shred. Or if you struggling killing your top lane opponent because they have a ton of Armor just get a couple levels in this and you'll shred them.

Nasus R godofdeath.png gives a ridiculous amount of raw stacks and makes him the god of the top lane he is. It's dumb how many people try to dive me when I am level 6 or 7. They dive me, I click W and R and its all over. They can't move to escape the turret and the ult makes you so tanky they can't dream of killing you. And if they do get close just click q and then hit them for a nice chunk of health from them and regen for you. Remember that the recent buffs gave him half of the normal cooldown on q during your ult. Obviously this is just busted in 1 v 1s especially if the opponent is melee as you can just spam q but do not forget how good this is for splitting and taking towers. If you get into a base race or anything of the type just pop R and go to town on the towers with your 1 second cooldown q.

His passive is just another great addition to his kit. nasuspassive.png this passive means that fights are too easy because you heal for a ton and you have more resistances than anyone can handle. Remember that it starts at 10% lifesteal then increases to 15% at level 7 then to 20% at level 13. This 5% increase can be incredibly important when in a tough match up or against someone where the 1 v 1's are very close. Usually you will crush 1 v 1 but there are just a couple champs that can fight nasus 1 v 1 in specific situations, ie jax or fiora late game, in those matchups these 5% increases in life steal can mean alot.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

you're gonna wanna start with this against ad laners when you need armor and want insane regen due to the 4 pots
Some Nasus players may highly recommend this but I don't often get it. I feel that it is better for champions who are looking to trade more to use the extra damage or are ranged and can use it better for harass, but it's for sure useful in some cases.
This item is now the standard to take. Especially into ranged matchups you need dorans. The passive where you get extended heal off autos or single target spells is essential in many matchups

Core Items

these are all great items to add to your build. You will have to decide when each one is best depending on your team and the enemy team composition.
merc treads are your boots of choice. The added speed and tenacity are incredibly helpful. If I do go for ninja tabi it means I'm up against some suppper auto attack based champions. For example an enemy Caitlyn adc, Kindred Jungle, and rengar top. And even if I do that I almost always get deadmans plate also to give me the added speed. boots of swiftness have recently become really popular and are for sure viable in some situations if you'd rather buy them.
I get these two items combined with my 10% cdr to hit the cap. I think they are super strong together and just rush whichever one gives the defensive stat you need for lane.

Situational Items

Currently frozen fist is my preferred between these two. I usually rush guantlet (if my lane opponent is ad) or merc treads and spectres cowl (which I upgrade to visage later in the game if against ap) depending on my lane opponent then go whatever additional items counter the enemy team

Items are all about how your doing and who your up against. If you're ahead get an early sheen 3057.png and go q your lane opponent right in the mouth and make them leave lane cause of the damage. If your behind get to stacking resistances. Stacking health is the mistake of the less experienced nasus player. Although some health is needed especially against champions like 67.png or 114.png. Resistances are key on nasus because your going to heal a lot due to your passive and this healing is gonna be the same amount whether you have 4k health or 2k health but the percentage of healing will be greater if you have less health. So you are effectively tankier with resistances instead of health.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Not too difficult of a matchup. Farm up and then once your q's start hitting hard go show him who is boss. In lane he will max and try and harrass you with his eaatroxE.png  (if he is good) so make sure that when you see the animation you just sidestep a bit and you will be absolutely fine. Your wither makes him really weak in 1 v 1 fights.

VS

Akali

Easy

Easy matchup. She is super weak pre 6 so stack up and then dominate but if she gets fed be careful. Build some defensive stats early so her burst doesn't hurt if you plan on fighting her.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

this lane is suprisingly difficult. It will come down to whether or not you can manage to juke the cho gath q rupture.png. Farm up but be wary. Getting only resistances in your items means that the true damage from feast.png can be surprising.

VS

Darius

Hard

This dude is tough. Everything comes down to whether or not you can steer clear of the darius e dariusaxegrabcone.png. He also manages to do a super dumb amount of true damage from stacks and his Rdariusexecute.png. If he has 5 stacks on you and clicks R feel free to cry because it can be unfair. The only good thing is if you survive through lane and manage to get ahead for a bit you can roll this man over and over and over because hes got no way to get away from you.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

this lane isnt too difficult. Just stack up and be a bigger force in team fights, although that can be hard if he just gets free farm all game. I'd recommend asking for an early gank just to make sure he stays weak. The only thing is that mundo q infectedcleavermissilecast.png does percent max health damage so just stand behind minions and make sure not to face tank too many of them.

VS

Fiora

Medium

This lane is really tricky. It all depends whether or not the fiora knows what she is doing. I have wrecked some fiora's and been wrecked by others. Be real careful of her burst and diving potential with ultfioradance.png and always watch for the vitals because true damage is your worst enemy.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Gangplank is a farm lane through and through. Both you and him just want to farm so do it. If you want to fight him you have to make him use wremovescurvy.png so that your w wither.png will actually stay on him. Also dont eat too many barrels raisemorale.png cause they do damage. Lots of damage. Its a skill and experience matchup

VS

Garen

Medium

Just like gangplank try to get him to waste his w garencommand.png so that if you all in him your w wither.png doesn't just fall off. This dude can be somewhat tough because of black cleaver 3071.png with his e and the fact that if your his enemy his ult hits like a truck.

VS

Gnar

Easy

If you play this lane right this guy is no threat. He seems like he would be but he usually just doesnt have the damage. The only thing you have to worry about at all is his w gnarW.png because if you jsut eat autos and q's gnarQ.png the whole game you'll take a ton of percent max health damage. Also his mega form can be somewhat scary but he has to be really proficient at the champ to make it that way.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

Stack up and get resistances. You'll be fine. Don't try and fight him too early though and make sure and get an advantage if he goes for the teleport plays that hecarim's love.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

laning against the donker can be tough or easy. No matter what you should get stacks because he pushes crazy hard due to h28gevolutionturret.png but you can stack under tower and stack his turrets. The only thing is your bound to lose your turret pretty early. It's just what donger does. The way to beat him is that he is very easy to gank and once you stack MR you can punish his bad positioning very easily.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

This lane is tough if you don't understand the match up. She does stupid amounts of damage and yet builds really tanky. Stack up early and make sure too stack her tentacles when you can. You can get tons of stacks against an illinois. Be really careful though, try and juke all her e's illaoiE.png and respect the ult illaoiR.png because this ability needs some of rito's attention cause it does soooo much damage right now.

VS

Irelia

Medium

This lane is usually not that difficult, a good irelia can make it hard though. Also remember her build dictates when you can actually 1 v 1 her. Whether or not she builds guinsoos3124.png will tell you when to 1 v 1 her. She does a surprising amount of true damage also so wait for the right time to go agressive. Watch the minions cause her jump reset can catch you offguard.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

this dude has a lot of damage early but is no threat in the long run. Make sure and take flash against him jsut in case he ults jarvanivcataclysm.png you in a bad situation. Especially if the enemy jungler is a threat also.

Just stack up and wreck him late game.

VS

Jax

Medium

This lane is an interesting one. His e jaxcounterstrike.png can be realll annoying and hes one of the few champions that if played right has a chance at fighting you late game. Usually you can beat him with the always powerful siphoningstrikenew.png stacks but a good jax is a constant threat.

VS

Jayce

Medium

Lots of people like to think jayce is strong against nasus but I just havent seen it. Although he is tough to catch because of in built speed ups and his hammer e jayceE.png I have found it easy to stack against him and carry the game in team fights.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Although I rarely see this little dude he can be scary. He's fast and often builds hybrid damage which is tough to build against. Just don't die to him early and you will outscale him hard.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

Lee Sin is realllly scary early but if you jsut manage to not die you will outscale him quickly. Respect his damage in the early game but stack up siphoningstrikenew.png and then remind him why he is a jungler.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

Liss can be somewhat difficult. Just stack MR and get stacks. The only hard part about playing against her is that she has load of cc and so its tough to catch her but also difficult to get away. If you can burn her E lissandraE.png then you can take her in a 1 v 1 once you have some items though.

VS

Lulu

Medium

Lulu is interesting. Her autos hurt because of pix so she is tough to build against and is tough to kill cause of her insane utility so dont fret, play defensive and stack up and show her the power of the cane late game.

VS

Malphite

Medium

Although the lane isnt tough I really dont like laning against malphite. He will inevitably have a ton of armor late game so he's really tough to 1 v 1 which usually means that nasus will just beat them in team fights but his R ufslash.png makes him a team fight monster. To carry a game that he is your lane opponent your going to need lots of stacks and good decision making from you and your team. Macro play is important

VS

Maokai

Easy

mao kai can be tough but not that bad. A little bullying early and he will probably stack armor but you should outscale him and wreck his team in fights.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Nid can be tough. Can. Ive seen alot of different builds on her with varrying success. Most people will stack AP and that makes it easy. You've got them in the bag. But the utility and auto attack based nid can be a nuisance. Just stack up and wait for team fights where she will just watch as you wreck her team.

VS

Olaf

Hard

This dude can be reallllly tough. But the good thing is he is not often played and even more rarely does this enemy top lane olaf understand why he beats you. The champion has tons of true damage and can ult olafragnarok.png right through your wither. If he pushes you into tower he just gives you the lane because of his range but if he freezes and all in's you early be veryy careful.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Panth has tons of damage early and almost always build armor pen. Your gonna have to play crazy defensive and sacrifice some stacks to get through early game but just wait cause once you get through early game without dying to him you will beat him in 1 v 1's and team fights.

VS

Rammus

Medium

I'm adding this match up because I've been playing it more and more and I dont like it in the slightest. Luckily stacks are really easy for you to get and you can out sustain him forever but late game you wont do any damage to him and hes just really strong right now. You have to really respect his pick potential with q powerball.png and just out position him in teamfights. Laning is easy but late game can be difficult. Make sure to use your e to lower his armor in fights.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Unless the renek gets fed then he is only scary in the very early game. Feel free to give up some stacks so that he doesnt all in you early because you outscale him hard

VS

Rengar

Hard

Again the rengar really has to know what he's doing to make this counter matchup work. Usually they just push you in to tower and make your life easy but sometimes they can be a hassle. Manipulate the wave and dont let them freeze.

VS

Riven

Medium

Riven is a skill matchup. Get stacks and survive and you have her easy buy give her even one kill and the snowball is on. When riven snowballs everyone is in trouble.

VS

Rumble

Medium

rumble can be tough. He has lots of damage and his early game is abusive but he can't really push his advantages that hard. You can fight him after you get to that mid game point where you tip the scales.

VS

Ryze

Medium

Early game against ryze is no problem. He doesnt have the mana or the damage to do much to you but late game ryze is an absolute monster. If he catches you during his ult passive combo desperatepower.png your in deep doo doo. The champ can output tons of damage and somehow snares you for like 6 seconds straight. An interesting match up to be sure but its far from impossible. You can beat him if you play your cards right and monitor his passives up time.

VS

Shen

Medium

shen can be tough. The dudes resources never run out so he just constantly barrages you with q's shenvorpalstar.png and then ults away and can have a bigger impact on the game. Make sure to push your advantages when he leaves lane and stack up so his team flames him for leaving lane and letting you farm.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

shyv isn't too bad. She can 1 v 1 you for a fair portion of the game but always pushes you in for easy siphoningstrikenew.png stacks because of her burnout shyvanaimmolationaura.png. Watch where you are in the lane because with her ult and burnout sometimes even wither wither.png cannot save you

VS

Singed

Easy

Singed is funny. Early on in the lane you two sometimes forget each other are there. But if he gets rylais and liandrys he can wreck you late game because off that damage. Almost every game you will be fine but sometimes the drugged up scientist is frightening to say the least

VS

Sion

Easy

Sion is easy. He will get super tanky so hes not worth trying to 1 v 1 cause he will just ult way. Just stack that young siphoningstrikenew.png and get to the point mid game that your running through his team like a hot knife through buttah.

VS

Swain

Hard

My personal least favorite of all match ups. This bird man is the worst. so much damage over time, sustain and cc. Recently his w swainshadowgrasp.png got nerfed which makes me so happy but this man is a nightmare. If you lane against him do your best to get stacks and exp and try and have an impact in team fights. Sadly this champ can be cancer to a nasus.

VS

Teemo

Hard

Satan. I hope no one has the opportunity to play nasus into teemo in ranked. There is no doubt about it he is a tough one. Your only hope is to get some jungler assistance early, preferrably before he puts shrooms bantamtrap.png all over the map, and keep him down.

A small but helpful tip is to run at the minions like your going to kill them to get him to burn his blind blindingdart.png on you when it doesnt matter because nothing is as bad as going to stack a minion and seeing this annoying mechanic pop up.

Good luck

VS

Trundle

Medium

Trundle is tough. He might be the only champ in the game that can 1 v 1 you late game if he build's right. His ult is underappreciated. He will steal all your resistances trundleR.png and then smack you senseless if he builds right. You just have to stack up and show up in team fights and give his team a taste of the cane.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

You would expect tryndamere to be good against you but personally I don't think so. your wither wither.png counters him crazy hard. Stack up and just match his split push and then immpact team fights way more than him.

VS

Udyr

Medium

Udyr usually isnt that tough but he can be a threat early on. The damage over time from udyrtigerstance.png can be overwhelming early. Play defensive, stack up, and then show him why the doge is better than the tiger, turtle, bear, and phoneix combined.

VS

Vayne

Hard

not an easy lane but at least there is an out. If you get left 1 v 1 you will probably get smashed but vayne is an easy kill. Let the jungler know there is a free kill top and then when your jungler is close wither wither.png her and go get your free +6 siphoningstrikenew.png

VS

Vladimir

Hard

Another tough lane. You have no choice but to stack MR and survive through the early game because even though he scales hard you are the god here.  Show him who is boss mid to late game.

VS

Wukong

Medium

wuk isnt to much of a threat. Like riven you just cant die early or he will begin the snowball. But you outscale him hard. Abuse your advantages one you get ahead over time.

VS

Yorick

Easy

yorick is sooo annoying... but not that tough. Stack the enemy minions and his ghouls and then wait for the mid game team fights where you can 1 shot his teammates.

Split pushing Back to Top

Split Pushing is one of the most difficult things about playing nasus because you have to have the game knowledge to know when to do it and when not to. And the even harder question is when to tp in to help the team and when to instead just go for the enemy base.

One of the crucial thing's to understand is when you have a good team comp for you to push.
-Say the enemy team is made up of a graves adc, a talon mid and a tank jungler and top laner, and just for the example your adc is sivir and your mid laner is ziggs. In this scenario you should keep pushing almost no matter what. The enemy team has absolutely no siege potential and your team has more than enough wave clear. Just tell your team to not fight but instead just stall while you crush the enemy base.
-Now say the enemy team is a caitlyn adc, xerath mid, and a kindred jungle while your team is a low waveclear comp. If your split pushing and you dont have teleport this is gonna end poorly. Your towers are gonna get sieged up and your gonna lose this base race almost every time.
-In the last scenario I want to mention: the enemy has crazy engage. If the enemy team has a malphite or amumu they are just gonna dive your carries if you leave so be careful splitting for too long or you will cost your team the game.

The last thing I want to mention is where to tp. Again this is dependent on the comps. Usually you want to tp in a way that you can easily get to the backline and wreck some faces but occasionally your gonna need to peel for your carriess so make sure you are proactive in your positioning for the beginning of fights. This peeling doesnt mean it is your job to keep them alive but if the enemy team has a fed talon just keep an eye open so when you see him you can wither and then crush some skulls.

Team compositions and Nasus Back to Top

I made this section so I could mention who Nasus is strong against and who he struggles against as well as good allied teammates.

Nasus struggles against
34.png because she will kite you for days and wall you off. She has incredible zoning potential and can be alot to handle when strong. Build MR and either merc treads or swiftness boots because you will need them.
67.png a good vayne can make your life tough. She has tons of in built true damage as well as incredible mobility and even invisibility. Late game can be a struggle against a capable vayne player. Your only hope is to get a wither and have a good enough team to help you get to her. If she has qss (which is often) try and hold wither till she blows it from other cc on your team. If you are the only teammate going for her and she has protection then you have to surprise her and get off 2 q's very quckly.
117.png lulu can also be tough, shields, extra health, and speed for the enemy carries as well as the possibility of polymorphing you makes team fighting tough as you cant do your job and kill the backline when against lulu I think its best to either have someone dive the enemy backline with you so that she can only stop one of you with polymorph or instead work on peeling a bit more if your carries are strong enough.
268.png Azir is incredibly hard to play against. First he does a ton of dmg which is okay alone but he also build rylais3116.png which kites super hard. I really dont enjoy late game team fights against a strong azir so I just try to split push.

Nasus excels against
429.png this champ. Just walk up and click w and watch as she tries to hop away but cant. With frozen heart added on its all over for kalista.
96.png again just click w and win the team fight.
115.png solely because hes not particularly mobile and your too tanky for him to focus. If the enemy team has immobile squishys bring out the inner doge.

Nasus excels with
117.png extra speed combined with shields and her ult make the doge an absolute monster.
15.png when she ults you run down the backline and smack em with the cane till they ff

Me Back to Top

So I'm honestly not ranked that high, I'm currently plat 4 and still in the grind. Probably everyone says this or at least thinks it but I think I should be around upper plat to low diamond if I played more. My ranked win rate since my first ranked game is like 65% but I just don't play that much. I play soccer at the pretty highly academically ranked college I attend and still do my best to have somewhat of a social life so sadly league doesn't get as much attention as I'd like to give it.

I've been playing the game for a while now though. I think I started right at the beginning of season 3 so I've seen some things change, for example frozen fist (iceborn gauntlet) used to be great on nasus and then it fell out of meta and wasn't that good for a while but now its back. Both tri force and iceborn are viable, but lately i prefer frozen fist.

I love nasus75.png. I have 220k champions mastery points on him. He is my favorite champion by far even though he is like the only top laner I play. I also play alot of Vayne, Graves, Trist, Cait, and Ezreal (I think ADC's are fun). Ive played a lot ranked games with him and have a 64% win rate (although this may change as I play more). Watching someone run in fear after I hit them with the cane for 80% of their health is amusing.

I love theory crafting and the like. I watch a ton of LCS both EU and NA because I enjoy competition and its easier to fit into my schedule than spamming ranked games because I can always pause it if I need to. I also watch alot of streams, including Sirhcez (love his nasus play) and the ever spicy Voyboy, Doublelift and Sneaky.

I hope this guide helps someone! If you have any questions or anything feel free to comment
Especially if its about specific match ups because writing alot about how to play against specific champions is kind of monotonous so if you want to know about the specifics please ask! I will try and kinda add more details to the matchup section when I have time.
I'd love it if you gave this guide a like! And if not please comment why you disliked it and tell me if there is anything you disagree with or would like me to add
Good Luck on the rift!
