Summoner Spells Back to Top

Olaf needs to go deep in fights and take a lot of damage, but he doesn't have any escapes so Flash is needed. Also one of the biggest weaknesses of Olaf is that enemies, especially carries, can escape from him by jumping over walls.

Many people take ghost on Olaf and I must admit, it is super strong in the laning phase. But in lategame Ghost is much weaker than Flash.

Masteries Back to Top

There are two different keystones I recommend taking for Olaf, Deathfire Touch or Thunderlord. Deathfire gives better damage in the early levels, but by taking Thunderlord we get to take the 5% CDR mastery from the middle tree so I almost always take Thunderlord.

Fervor is the best Keystone in lategame, but its nearly useless in early and midgame so I don't like it. Grasp is pointless because we never autoattack enemies in the earlygame and in lategame its not as good as Fervor. Warlords Bloodlust is the weakest of them all because Life steal is a weak stat for Olaf.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Core Items

Always build Kindlegem, one damage item and Deadmans Plate

Situational Items

    Situational items
    Example of a final build

Olaf in his early levels and laning phase is heavily limited by his Mana. Now that Mana potions are removed, there are only two real ways to get Mana in the early game: either you start with a Sapphire Crystal or you start with the Corrupting potion. Out of those two options I think Corrupting potion is better, especially because none of the items that are built from Sapphire Crystal are that great.

Kindlegem is always the first item no matter what, that item is crazy good for Olaf. In the lategame you either build a Spirit Visage out of it or sell it.

I usually only build one damage item, either Black Cleaver, Deaths Dance or Maw. Cleaver is best against armor stacking tanks (which are common in the top lane nowadays). Deaths Dance is just generally really good, Lifesteal is a waste on Olaf but spellvamp is excellent. Maw is good either against multiple magic damage dealers or a single Magic damage burster like a top lane full ap Fizz.

After Deadmans Plate got nerfed many people stopped buying it, but I think its still super good for Olaf, he needs the movement speed more than most other champions because he doesn't have any mobility of his own.

Randuins and Ninja tabi are good options against a team with multiple autoattackers for example Kindred jungle/Quinn top.

Steraks Gage is a decent pickup against heavy burst such as Zed, but unfortunately Olafs main ability, Undertow, doesn't scale from total AD so it doesn't really increase vikings damage.

VS

Darius

Easy

Darius can never win all-ins and he can't escape from all-ins, definitely one of the easiest matchups. Doesn't really matter if you get hit by the blade part of his Q, viking should destroy Darius in all-ins regardless, Olaf just has way more damage in the early game.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

You often need olafragnarok.png to kill him, because without it the Cleavers are a strong escape mechanism against the viking.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Tank Ekko is a relatively safe champion, but he can't farm from max range with ekkoQ.png forever because eventually he will run out of mana.

VS

Fiora

Hard

2nd Hardest matchup in the game. Dodge the game, theres very little you can do.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Try to all-in him when his passive is on cooldown, he gets 30% movement speed from it thats huge for escaping.

VS

Gnar

Easy

Gnars dash is short and like all ranged champions, he can't fight back against the viking. Olaf is just a massive counter to ranged champions.

VS

Irelia

Medium

Irelia with Attackspeed runes is strong in all-ins so if you miss a crucial axe or throw one a bit too far away she can kill you. Don't fight her in minion waves because she will dash around almost like a Yasuo, dodging all of your axes.

VS

Jayce

Easy

When you have olafragnarok.png available he has absolutely no escape mechanics, and even without it the jayceE.png alone doesn't necessarily save him from a good all-in.

VS

Kayle

Easy

She can't win all-ins and she has no way to escape from all-ins, super easy matchup. Save your E for last hitting her after she uses the ultimate.

VS

Kennen

Easy

His kennenlightningrush.png isn't a strong escape vs Olaf, and Kennen has no way of fighting back when Olaf all-ins him, super easy matchup. I wouldn't bother buying any Magic resist because of him, he is more of a teamfight mage and his damage to Olaf is very small.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

Diving her under turret is a bit tricky because of her ultimate, but other than that it's a super easy matchup.

VS

Lulu

Easy

Lulu, Teemo and Heimerdinger are the easiest matchups, the dream. Lulu has no way to escape your all-ins, the speedboost from her luluw.png is useless against the perma-slow from Olafs Q Q Q Q Q Q, and the Polymorph is just as useless because she will just remain slowed during the time you are CC:ed.

VS

Malphite

Medium

The only annoying thing in this matchup is his ultimate. Even if Malphite gets a ton of armor, Olaf still has easily enough damage to destroy the rock in all-ins, but he is pretty safe after level6 because the ultimate is such a strong escape tool.

VS

Maokai

Hard

If he has attackspeed runes like they almost always do, then its extremely hard to kill him by all-inning.

VS

Pantheon

Easy

Pantheon is weak to all-ins and thats exactly what Olaf does. Pantheons passive is wasted against Olaf because Olaf never has to autoattack him.

VS

Riven

Hard

3rd hardest matchup in the game, but not even nearly as hard as Yasuo or Fiora. The problem with this matchup is that when you land one axe on her, it doesn't guarantee that you will land the next one because she has four different dashes none of which are affected by slows. In short, the champion is just really strong against being perma-slowed.

If Riven wastes her Q stupidly, then you can all-in her. If she just plays super passively and never uses Q or E and never tries to deal damage to you, then its a super hard matchup because she can always escape your all-ins, her kit is super super safe.

VS

Ryze

Easy

He can't win all-ins and he can't escape from all-ins. Ryze scales well so remember to kill and zone him as much as possible.

VS

Teemo

Easy

There's absolutely nothing that Teemo can do, ever. He has no way to escape your all-ins and the blind is completely useless because you never have to autoattack him.

VS

Trundle

Hard

Trundles rank 1 trundleQ.png is strong and his ultimate is stronger in duels than Olafs. So when do we strike? Level 5. Level 5 is by far your best chance to all in the troll, his rank 3 Q isn't as good as Olafs rank3 olafaxethrowcast.png.

If the enemy jungler is near in level 5, then bad luck, you can never fight him again 1v1 unless you get a lead from somewhere else somehow.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

If you don't get a lead early, buy an early Hexdrinker after Kindlegem. In this matchup I like taking a point to olaffrenziedstrikes.png in level4 to sustain some of his damage by lifestealing from minions.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

Nightmare. Hardest matchup in the game, dodge the match. I have played this matchup more than 50 times and let me tell you, there's extremely little that a CDR Olaf can do against the samurai. You have to rely on your autoattacks instead of Q Q Q Q Q Q Q all-inning, but Olaf played like that is very weak. Yasuo massively outscales Olaf and can farm extremely safely.

If you absolutely have to play this matchup instead of dodging, take Ghost and try to autoattack him to death without axes.

Olaf explained Back to Top

Olaf is a champion who can do nothing but all-in his enemies. He is all about all-inning. He cant win short trades against most champions because he doesn't have burst, and he can't poke with the axes because their Mana cost is too high, but he sure can all-in people from full HP, thats what he excels at. If you want to get a lot of solokills in lane, then Olaf is probably the best top laner of choice for you.

Olafs early game is extremely strong, but his late game scaling is one of the worst in the game. His base damages are good in the early game, but they don't scale to late game. Most tanks have some sort of damaging abilities that scale from the max%hp of enemies allowing their damage to scale into the late game, but Olaf doesn't have anything like that.

Even though his late game is so weak, he is definitely not a weak champion at all. He is massively strong in the early game, you can deal with his weak scaling by getting a big lead in the early game using his strengths, or by ending the game before late game starts.

In the laning phase Olaf is generally the counter to all-ranged champions and as a completely skillshot dependant champion he is countered by melee champions champions with many dashes (Yasuo, Fiora and Riven). Ranged champions gain almost no benefit from their range against Olaf in lane because with 25% CDR the perma-slow from Olafs Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q Q axe comboing is too much for them. On the other hand many melee champions can either fight back or escape from Olafs all-ins.

Olaf is tankier than most other bruisers and he can be the only tanky champion in a team, forming a one-man-frontline in teamfights. However unlike most tanks, Olaf can't engage anything. It is best to have some form of engaging from the other 4 champions of your team, for example an Ashe with her Ultimate.

Advanced Olaf tactics Back to Top

When you are killing jungle camps with Olaf, it is normally difficult to pick up the olafaxethrowcast.png axes, because if you try to right click in the middle of the camps, your character will attack the monsters instead of walking to pick up the axe. However, you can easily right click and walk to your axe location while pressing the "Target champions only"-button. By default it is bound to the Tilde key between the TAB and ESC keys in your keyboard.

olafaxethrowcast.png Has a minimum cast range of 400, this limits Olafs DPS in his QQQQQQ all-ins. Otherwise he could just throw the axe on his feet, instantly picking it up again and gaining massive DPS. However when you throw it directly next to a wall, it doesn't have the minimum cast range because you can't throw it in the middle of walls. So always try to chase your enemies to nearby walls, Olafs DPS with 30%+ CDR is absolutely insane when he can throw the axe on his feet like this.

Olaf can cast Teleport during the time his ultimate olafragnarok.png is activated. This way, it is impossible to stop the channeling with CC and since Olaf is a tanky champion he isn't easily killed during the channeling time either, making it an excellent escape tool even when multiple enemies are ganging up on you.

olaffrenziedstrikes.png Increases the healing gained from your potions. Since we start the game with Corrupting potion this is pretty important. Try to save your potion charges for when you have your W activated, and if you don't have mana problems then you can even activate the W just for the potion.

olaffrenziedstrikes.png Also increases Olafs natural health regen. Depending on how low on hp Olaf is and how high of a health regen he has, he can regen around 5-20 extra HP just by using his W alone. When you are on the edge of dying, barely taking enough damage to just die, this alone can save you. Imagine how many times you have lived with around 10hp or just barely died to that last tick of damage.

olaffrenziedstrikes.png Is not an autoattack reset unlike for example Jax's W or Trundles Q. But still, if you cast it in the middle of an autoattack animation it will cancel your autoattack. So how to use the ability correctly in-between autoattacks? Time it exactly like it would be an autoattack reset. Activate it as soon as possible after your previous autoattack has landed, this way the next autoattack will be as fast as possible.

olafrecklessstrike.png is Olafs finishing move in all-ins. It has a cast-time of about 1 second, but if the channeling starts, it will always complete. The channeling can not be escaped or interrupted. If a low HP enemy flashes in the middle of the channel-time, they will die to the ability anyways so they just waste their flash. So when you are all-inning the enemy and they have their flash up, always try to give them false hope and make them use the flash. If you are about to kill them too easily, intentionally miss the last axe that would kill them, then wait about a second and finish them with the E to bait their flash. The timing is important, the more you do it the better you will be at predicting the moment they will flash.
