Summoner Spells Back to Top

6.png This is especially good for later on, when Olaf really lacks mobility up against champions with dashes like:   7.png55.png114.png105.png84.png76.png157.png429.png24.png Using ghost at the right time can help you stick to these champions, whereas 4.png is relatively short compared to the distance of most dashes.

4.png Flash is good on Olaf, as a reliable escape, and if you need to follow someone who 4.png through a wall. I suggest taking 4.png if you are not sure if you can win 1v1 in lane.

12.pngIs good on all top champs because it helps you have more map presence.

There is a bug with Olaf where the immunity to disables you get from olafragnarok.png  will not stop CC from canceling 12.png when you have it active.

Masteries Back to Top

Warlords Bloodlust is probably the best Keystone Mastery for Olaf, because it synergizes so well with his passive olafpassive.pngThe only other option for Keystone Would probably be Grasp of the Undying which is a much safer pick, especially if you are going to be doing more trading than all in. Olaf is one of a few champions that have No Ability Power Scaling in their kit. So it only makes sense to take Battering Blows instead of Piercing thoughts. I take runic armor to help sustain in all ins.

In the case that you would be against another melee and you fight it out to the death. Use your W olaffrenziedstrikes.png  when you hit about half HP and with the attack speed from your Passive olafpassive.png + W  olaffrenziedstrikes.png  you will probably heal more than you are taking damage.  Warlords Bloodlust, and Runic Armor, help to amplify the healing in a situation like that. The only way that you can really die if you do all of this properly is if they burst you down, with something like 114.png  R fioradance.png
Against champs like 114.png  you'll want to take Grasp of the Undying, and beat her in trading rather than risking an all in post-6.

I would really like to have Storm Raiders Surge on Olaf, but I feel that It would be immensely difficult to proc due to the large majority of Olaf's damage is DPS instead of burst.

R>Q>E>W Against ranged champions 150.png13.png85.png126.png133.png17.png and against champions with additional range on abilities such as 114.png157.png59.png78.png80.png
R>E>Q>W Against armor stacking champs like 33.png57.png75.png

R>Q>E>W Against champions with passives that trigger when out of combat like 86.png54.png so that you can use Q to keep their passives on cooldown.

Never Max W I've tested it and it doesn't work in about 80% of matchups. Also Since patch 6.8 the lifesteal with 1 point in w is a lot closer to having w maxed out, so there is less reason to put more points in it.

Note: using your Q to harass your opponent will shove in the lane. If you want to freeze it then avoid hitting the minions with it and hit your opponent only.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Safe sustain start. The changes in 6.8 are buffs to Olaf because he has more Mana issues than health.
Offencive start, if you are looking for an early all in.

Core Items

More Assassin-Like Build, only build if your team already has a tank, and if their team is mostly squishy targets.
These Two items are amazing together, I am not sure why people haven't picked up on them yet. The AOE from the Hydra Passive is physical damage, therefore it will apply black cleaver stacks. If you position properly you can shred the entire enemy team's armor by smacking a few minions, before a teamfight. Additionally the health that black cleaver gives you, makes the Hydra do additional damage, since it scales with your health.
My signature build: Black Cleaver Rush, Into Titanic Hydra, then Sterack's Gauge, into Spirit Visage and Dead Man's Plate.

Situational Items

BORK is good against champions that build a lot of health. If they build armor to counter your BORK then you can max your E Reckless Swing, because it does true damage. The attack speed that BORK gives puts your E off cooldown more often so that you can use it. If you max E and they build health to counter your true damage then the % health damage on BORK will counter that. If they counter build you, counter build their counter build.
Sunfire is a good pick in place of something like dead mans plate, The only issue with it is that you can't freeze the lane with it. If you do then you are bound to miss CS.
If you feel like you are the most important member of your team, and you must be alive to carry, then this is a good idea, in case you get caught out.
In 6.9 Steracks Gauge will have the same passive as this one. Be careful that you don't buy both because the passives don't stack.
I'm looking into the changes to this in 6.9, but nothing is final yet.

VS

Akali

Medium

This new tank akali top is only strong if you can't shut her down,

-if you get a kill on her before level 6 then you have the power to make her useless lategame, as long as you don't throw your lead.

-if you don't get a kill on her before level 6 then you still have kill potential, just keep in mind that she is also more capable of killing you after level 6.

VS

Darius

Hard

This matchup is very dependent on the skill of both players, if you dodge his Q dariuscleave.png then you will most likely win. He is one of the very few champions that you don't want to attempt to all in at level 1.  A lot like Garen's garenjustice.png and Volibear's volibearw.png.  122.png's dariusexecute.png will make it a lot harder for you to utilitze your passive olafpassive.png

Don't fight until you are sure that you can beat him. Don't fight at level 6. If he gets an advantage over you its a rough time after that. Ask your jungler to gank, for you. Once you have an advantage it shouldn't be that hard.

VS

Fiora

Medium

This lane is very dependent on harassing her with your olafaxethrowcast.png before all inning. Since you don't have any Hard CC you don't have to worry about her fiorariposte.png stunning you. Start harrass at level 2,  when she uses Qfioraq.png to proc her passive fiorapassive.png respond with your olafrecklessstrike.png

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Bully him in lane and harass him with Q olafaxethrowcast.png, he shouldn't be that hard, just be sure to dodge most if not all of his barrels, raisemorale.png

VS

Garen

Medium

His ult garenjustice.pngmakes it harder to fully utilize your passiveolafpassive.png so be sure you can win an all in.

Use your Q olafaxethrowcast.png to keep him in combat and prevent him from healing with his passive garenpassive.png

You win all ins levels 1-5. Level 6 you most likely lose if you are both full health. He will win most fights if you are marked as the "Villian" so harass him to get him low before you go for an all in after level 6.

VS

Gnar

Hard
3044.png Helps you stick to him
3009.png increases your kill potential and makes it harder to kite you
3047.png reduces his damage, but you can't punish him

Depending on what hes building it might be better to all in him in his gnarpassive.png
Yes,  it is possible, but you need your olafragnarok.png, so that he can't stun you.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Before level 6 you have a better  all in.

After level 6 you have to out harass and out sustain her. Before fighting.

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

This matchup is one of the hardest for olaf. J4's Ultimate 100% counters Olaf's ultimate. This is because Olaf's ultimate doesn't let him move through terrain (that would be OP) so you will be trapped in his Ultimate even if you had your ultimate active when he used his.

This is a matchup that is rare to encounter, so be very careful because it is surprisingly good against Olaf.

Your only chance from my experience is to kill him before 6, otherwise you will probably need your jungler's help.

VS

Master Yi

Easy

Olaf, is better in a 1v1 than Master Yi, Proof

VS

Nasus

Hard
First let me make this clear. There is no counter-play to Nasus. You cannot dodge any of his abilities, and you cannot counter build him because he counter builds you and does more damage.

This lane is very tricky,
You want to harass him without pushing the minion wave, because you need to freeze it at your tower so that you have room to chase him. (And to deny his stacks)

Before level 6, you have to poke him down and make short trades, if you try to all in him he will just press W wither.png (W for wither or W for win) and you are not allowed to autoattack anymore. DO NOT LET HIM HIT THE MINIONS OR HE WILL OUTSUSTAIN YOU.

After level 6, you only have kill potential when you all in him with your olafragnarok.png, If you don't have olafragnarok.png, then he wins because he pressed W, so you do no damage. BUT you have to use olafragnarok.png at the right time which is when he presses the W key wither.png, After level 6 it is especially important that you freeze the wave at your tower because, you need room to chase him, before he gets under tower. If he gets to his tower he lives.

TL:DR
Pre-6: Poke him down,  avoid all in & prevent him from sustaining off minions.
Post-6: Freeze lane at your tower so that you have room to chase him,  Force an all in when your R is off cooldown, use R when he uses W and tries to run. Repeat this process every time that your R is off cooldown,

When hes dead he can't stack, without stacks he is less hard to kill.

VS

Trundle

Medium

Depends on how the trundle player plays,

if he plays passive then you can harass him for free
If he tries trading then make sure his R trundleR.png is on cooldown.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Beat him before 6,

After 6 bait out his ultimate and run, then throw an axe to finish him once it ends.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Harass him with Q olafaxethrowcast.png, if he tries to trade your E olafrecklessstrike.pngis basically a better version of his monkeykingdoubleattack.png, his scales more, you have to build an advantage before level 11 and then you can just steam roll the lane. He will need his Jungler to camp him if he wants to have any presence later on, so adjust your play style accordingly.

Max Q, because you will hit him and his clone when he uses monkeykingdecoy.png, so you don't waste damage, also he doesn't have a reliable dash escape so the slow from your Q olafaxethrowcast.png gives you a lot of kill potential.

He can use his E monkeykingnimbus.png to escape depending on where the minion wave is, but 9/10 situations his E monkeykingnimbus.png will only work as an engage, and is counterproductive as a disengage.

Champion Analysis Back to Top

Pros

-Strong early game
-Build in sustain
-True damage
-Good harass
-wave clear
-slows
-Good DPS
-Best 1v1 all in of any champion

Cons
-falls off lategame
-unintentionally shoves the lane when harassing w/ Q
-lack of CC
-long cooldown on ultimate
-falls victim to burst damage
-Lacks mobility
-Easily kited

Strengths and Weaknesses of Olaf's R olafragnarok.png
In a lot of cases you shouldn't fight at level 6, for example against 48.png86.png122.png you will probably lose a level 6 all in, some cases it is better to not activate your Ultimate  olafragnarok.png because of defensive stats that you lose.
olafragnarok.pngis best for breaking CC if you get caught out by the enemy team.
There is only once circumstance that it is almost always best to use olafragnarok.png, which is if you are 1v1 against a champion that is going to be in your face like, 11.png19.png24.png23.png266.png5.png
Other places you would use it is to catch up to your opponent to finish them such as8.png 85.png68.png36.png14.png

The best abilities to break with olafragnarok.png, are ones that stop you from going all in such as:

5.png's xenzhaoparry.png
75.png's wither.png
9.png's terrify.png and fiddlesticksdarkwind.png
54.png's seismicshard.pnglandslide.png, andmalphitepassive.png,

Getting rid of 3.png, is definitely worth using olafragnarok.png, regardless of whether the 3.png was to prevent your escape or prevent you from going ham.

---Olaf's Early Game---

From my experience Olaf has the best Level 1 1v1 in the game. (Considering you don't get outplayed)
At one point in  mid-season 5, I got first blood 10 games in a row by playing only Olaf. I have solo invaded the enemy jungle, and killed both their jungler and toplaner 1v2, other times I stolen the camp with a single axe throw. Olaf is by far one of the strongest if not the strongest champion at level 1.

This is mostly because the refund on his Q brings it down to about 2 seconds, or if you take E first then every autoattack reduces the cooldown by 1 second.
