Summoner Spells Back to Top

Summoner Spells

red_line.png

4.png Flash is the first Summoner Spell and I recommend always taking it when you're playing this champion. This is because Flash is the best Summoner Spell around. It is a really good and a reliable Summoner Spell. It can be used offensively, defensively and is honestly, a really good Spell to take.

11.png For your secondary Summoner Spell, I recommend that you take Smite. Smite is the Summoner Spell that you need to take if you're playing Jungle. It will give you global map pressure and will allow you to apply pressure to objectives such as Baron and Dragon. It will also allow you to stay healthy and allow you to sustain through early Jungle pathing.

6.png Instead of taking Flash, you could take Ghost. Ghost works well on this champion because they rely heavily on speed to get around the map. Taking this in conjunction with Predator will make you incredibly fast. Take Ghost instead of Flash and remember to have smite!

New Runes Back to Top

Recommended Runes

red_line.png

There are two main rune pages for 33.png Rammus. Each one has its benefits and its drawbacks. You should take the one that is most suited for you. I personally like to take the first Rune page because it allows me to deal more damage and allow me to get around the map quickly thanks to Predator.png?width=32Predator. However, like stated- both work and are good on 33.png Rammus. With that said, let's get on to the pages!

red_line.png

The first page takes Domination as the main tree. I like to take Predator.png?width=32 Predator on 33.png Rammus because it allows me to quickly get around the map and gank lanes. It also allows me to counter-gank my allies and make ganks even. Predator.png?width=32 Predator works off of your 1001.png boots so I also like to get them early. Predator.png?width=32 Predator, in general, is a really good Rune because it allows me to be even faster and when used in conjunction with my powerball.png Q, it will make me incredibly fast! The next Rune I recommend is cheap%20shot1.png?width=32Cheap Shot. This Rune works with both your powerball.png Q and puncturingtaunt.png E. It will allow you to deal more damage to enemies who are impaired. For your next Rune, I recommend that you take Zombie%20Ward.png?width=32 Zombie Ward. This will allow you to clear and provide vision for your team. You can actually take any of the three Runes in this line, however, I felt that Zombie%20Ward.png?width=32 Zombie Ward would be the most beneficial. For the final Rune, I suggest that you take Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32 Relentless Hunter. This is a good Rune because it will make you faster out of combat. This means that you will be able to move around the map quickly and get to objectives quickly. Use this with Predator.png?width=32 Predator and your powerball.png Q- you will make you- incredibly, incredibly fast!

red_line.png

For the secondary Rune tree, I recommend Resolve. In this tree, we will get some armor and allow our allies to heal when we use hard crowd control on the enemy. The Resolve tree has a range of different things that you can take and you could actually take a something different on this page. For this guide, however, we will take Font%20of%20Life.png?width=32 Font of Life and Iron%20Skin.png?width=32 Iron Skin. However, you could take Overgrowth.png?width=32 Overgrowth or Mirror%20Shell.png?width=32 Mirror Shell.

red_line.png

The second Rune page is like the first except you will be taking the other page as your main page! Unlike Predator.png?width=32 Predator, Aftershock.png?width=32 Aftershock is very strong and can always be used throughout the game. It doesn't have a long cooldown like Predator.png?width=32 Predator and is, on some occasions better than Predator.png?width=32 Predator. 33.png Rammus can take either Page 1 or Page 2 so I thought, it was best to include both viable pages. Like stated, we will be taking Resolve as the main tree. This is a really good tree for 33.png Rammus because it gives him a range of defensive stats that will allow him to be incredibly tanky. The next Rune is Font%20of%20Life.png?width=32 Font of Life. This rune will allow your allies to heal when you apply crowd control to an enemy champion. This works with both your powerball.png Q and puncturingtaunt.png E. For your next Rune I recommend that you take Conditioning.png?width=32 Conditioning. This rune will make your tanky thanks to the bonus armor and magic resist and the increase in defensive stats. For your final Rune, I recommend taking Overgrowth.png?width=32 Overgrowth. This Rune will make us naturally tanky and give us health throughout the game. This Rune will give us free health when farming and Jungling. With the new Jungle system, for every 2 camps you take, you will gain this buff.

red_line.png

For the secondary Rune Page secondary tree, I recommend Domination. You should take cheap%20shot1.png?width=32 Cheap shot and Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32 Relentless Hunter. These two Runes will allow you to be more of a threat to the enemy and be able to deal more damage in ganks. They will also allow you to get around the map quickly and allow you to counter gank.

33.png Rammus could take a range of different secondary Runes.

Rammus' Passive is Spiked Shell

33.png Rammus' basic attacks deal bonus magic damage. The damage is increased while defensiveballcurl.png Defensive Ball Curl is active.

Screenshot_1.png

red_line.png

Rammus' Q is Powerball

33.png Rammus tucks himself into a ball and begins to roll for up to 6 seconds. During this time he will be unable to auto attack or cast his puncturingtaunt.png E. The longer the ability goes on, the more bonus movement speed he will get. 33.png Rammus' powerball.png Q will allow you to get around the map quickly. However, 33.png Rammus will stop rolling if he collides with an enemy or monster. He will knock back any nearby enemies within the area of effect. Enemies hit will be dealt damage and slowed.

You can cancel powerball.png Powerball instantly by reactivating the ability or using your defensiveballcurl.png W.

Screenshot_2.png

Tips and Tricks:

Your powerball.png Q is very versatile and can be used in a variety of situations. Make sure to not waste your powerball.png Q because it can save your life. In the early game, you can use your powerball.png Q to get back to the Jungle quickly or use it to get around fast. You should use it when approaching lanes for a gank and try to knock back the enemy. You need to avoid minions whilst using your powerball.png Q because any interaction with them will stop your powerball.png Q. If you have taken Predator.png?width=32 Predator in your Rune page, activate Predator.png?width=32 Predator Passive on your 1001.png Boots and this will make you and your powerball.png Q even faster! Beware your powerball.png Q can be cancelled by reactivating it or using your defensiveballcurl.png W.

Your powerball.png Q can be used to engage and escape, try your best not to waste it as it can and will- save your life!

red_line.png

Rammus' W is Defensive Ball Curl

33.png Rammus gains bonus armor and bonus magic resist for 6 seconds. He also increases his rammuspassive.png Passive damage by 50% and applies it to enemies whenever they use basic attacks against 33.png Rammus. While his defensiveballcurl.png W is active, 33.png Rammus will be slowed by 30% for the whole duration.

defensiveballcurl.png Defensive Ball Curl can be cancelled instantly by reactivating the ability or by activating powerball.png Powerball.

Screenshot_3.png

Tips and Tricks

Your defensiveballcurl.png W will deal damage to enemies that auto attack and deal damage to you whilst your defensiveballcurl.png W is active. In the Jungle, you should always use your defensiveballcurl.png W to help take the Jungle camps, especially if there is more than one of them. Your defensiveballcurl.png W will give you lots of defensive stats so make sure to use it when you go for ganks. Beware your defensiveballcurl.png W can be disabled by reactivating it or using your powerball.png Q.

red_line.png

Rammus' E is Frenzying Taunt

33.png Rammus taunts a target enemy and gains bonus attack speed through the duration. If 33.png Rammus uses another one of his abilities, then the attack speed bonus is reset.

Screenshot_4.png

Tips and Tricks

Your puncturingtaunt.png E is what makes you a formidable enemy. Your puncturingtaunt.png E is the best part of your kit and you can solo carry the early game thanks to this ability alone. You want to get points in this early and go to gank- each point will increase the length of the duration. Beware, taunting an enemy will make them focus you. You should not taunt an enemy if you are low health. The enemy will focus you with auto attacks, so try to get armor early and quickly. Items that grant health and armor such as 3742.png Dead Mans Plate and 1409.png Enchantment: Cinderhulk are a must!

In team fights, you have a few choices on who you want to focus. You can either focus the enemy frontline and peel for your team or you can go and taunt the enemy carry. Beware of the enemy carry and ranged champions in general- this is because they are generally good at kiteing 33.png Rammus.

red_line.png

Rammus' Ultimate is Tremors

33.png Rammus starts an earthquake around him that slows and deals damage to enemies around him for the duration. Structures also receive damage but double the amount! The slow stacks up to 8 times.

Screenshot_5.png

Tips and Tricks

Your tremors2.png Ultimate is incredibly strong, especially against melee champions. It has a low cooldown and should be used as often as you can. In ganks, you should roll up with your powerball.png Q, puncturingtaunt.png taunt the enemy and use your tremors2.png Ultimate. The damage truly stacks as it deals damage per second. The enemy will also be slowed. If you kill the enemy, make sure to focus the tower with your tremors2.png Ultimate as it does double damage. In some cases, if you ally has already slain the enemy- you could go to their lane and use your tremors2.png Ultimate to help them get the tower quickly.

red_line.png

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Always start Hunter's Talisman and Refillable Potion.

Core Items

Your first item is always going to be your Jungle item. You can choose to pick up either one of the two smites. I recommend Stalker's Blade. You always want to get Cinderhulk too because it gives you alot of defensive stats.
Your second item is going to be boots. You have a choice of three different boots and you should pick up the boots that you need to win that game. The only 3 viable boots are Ninja Tabi, Mercury's Treads and Swiftness Boots
For your third item, you should pick up Spirit Visage or Dead Man's Plate. You want to pick the item up that you need first. For example, you may want early Cooldown, or you may need early health and armor. It depends and is situational, pick the one that is most benefical to that game.
For your fourth item, you're looking at again either Spirit Visage or Dead Man's Plate. You want to get the other one that you didn't purchase as your third item.
For your 5th item you want to get either Thornmail or Randuin's Omen. You should purchase the one you need most. Your final item will be the other.
This is an example build. You will be very tanky and strong against AD champions. However, you will lack Magic resist. If you need Magic Resist, exhange the Thornmail.

Situational Items

Good items against heavy AP team composition.
Good items against heavy AD team composition.

Items

red_line.png

33.png Rammus is a very good champion and can build a range of items. There are a huge amount of items that work well on him. The problem is, there are so many items that you can buy it can be hard to know what to buy and when. I would recommend starting with 1039.png Hunter's Talisman followed by 2031.png Refillable Potion. 33.png Rammus can be mana hungry- especially early, so you should always take 1039.png Hunter's Talisman as your starting item. You should also take 2031.png Refillable Potion too because you will want to pick up the upgraded version of it for even more sustain -2032.png Hunter's Potion. Your first major item is going to be your Jungle item upgraded to 3751.png Cinderhulk. You are able to purchase all of the Smites that are available as they all work on 33.png Rammus. However, each has its benefits and its flaws. 3706.png Stalker's Blade is good if you're looking to fight champions 1 versus 1. 3715.png Skirmisher's Sabre is good against tank enemies or people who deal lots of damage such as fighters.

red_line.png

Your second item is going to be upgraded 1001.png Boots. 33.png Rammus has a lot of freedom with his purchase of 1001.png Boots. You can get 3047.png Ninja Tabi if you're against a heavy AD team, 3111.png Mercury's Treads if you're against a heavy AP/ CC team or you could go 3009.png Swifty Boots. Any of the three work, so purchase the ones you need for that game. Beware, 33.png Rammus is rather immobile early, so I recommend purchasing Tier 1 1001.png Boots whilst you're getting your first item. This will also allow you to use Predator.png?width=32 Predator early! For your third item, you want to get either 3065.png Spirit Visage or 3742.png Dead Man's Plate. Each has its benefits and drawbacks, so get which one you prefer as your third item, and then the other as your fourth. I recommend 3065.png Spirit Visage because it gives you earlier cooldown reduction, but 3742.png Dead Man's give you more defensive stats. It's up to you really. Your 5th and 6th items are going to be- again, optional in the purchase order, but I recommend 3075.png Thornmail and 3143.png Randuin's Omen. Both these items will allow 33.png Rammus to be incredibly tanky and protect him heavily against AD based teams.

Before flaming me about the item choices. Please read the Situational item section below.

red_line.png

Understanding "Situational Items"

red_line.png

League of Legends is an ever-growing game. You will find yourself needing to pick up items that are not necessarily what I recommened in this guide. This is because they are "situational" items. 33.png Rammus is a great example of a champion that can pick up- practically any tank item and perform well with it. There are many different situations and items that you will need to pick and choose from to make your build work.

Here are some of the things you need to keep in mind when picking up an item:

  • Is it viable on 33.png Rammus? For example- Will it provide me with the stats I need and buff me into a tank- there's no point buying 3089.png Deathcap on 33.png Rammus!
  • Will it protect me against the enemy team- For example, If the enemy is mostly AP, there is no point buying multiple AD items. This is the same for a full AD team- buying MR is not good.
  • Will it benefit me? This is one of the main things and something you will always need to keep in mind. Like stated above, Will it be viable and will it protect me. These both make up your decision of the item benefitting you.

If the enemy is MOSTLY AP, then I recommend picking up some of these items:

3111.png Mercury's Treads, 3065.png Spirit Visage, 3194.png Adaptive Helm, 3001.png Abyssal Mask, 3083.png Warmog's Armor.

If the enemy is MOSTLY AD, then I recommend picking up some of these items:

3047.png Ninja Tabi, 3075.png Thornmail, 3742.png Dead Man's Plate, 3143.png Randuin's Omen, 3110.png Frozen Heart.

Remember, the best players adapt to each game and each situation. Pick up the items you need to win now!

VS

Amumu

Easy

This is a good match up as they are weak early. Try your best to put them behind. Amumu is very weak early so try your best to win the early game against him.

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

Triple CC, rip you. Dodge his skill shots.

VS

Elise

Hard

Rammus doesn't do to well against Ap champions in general because you are more suited to protection against AD Champions. With that said it's not impossible. You will have to buy MR against this champion.

VS

Evelynn

Hard

Rammus doesn't do too well against Ap champions in general because you are more suited to protection against AD Champions. With that said it's not impossible. You will have to buy MR against this champion. She is incredibly mobile and can easily kill you in the 1v1 setting.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Medium

Rammus doesn't do to well against Ap champions in general because you are more suited to protection against AD Champions. With that said it's not impossible. You will have to buy MR against this champion.

VS

Gragas

Medium

This is a skill based matchup, you counter him but he also counters you. Try to use your Q when he dashes towards you. This will stop his damage and him getting close to you. Using your E will stop him from escaping.

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

Dodge his E + Q combo. Hard matchup because he can lock you down.

VS

Kayle

Medium

This can go either way. It is a good matchup for you, but if they get the jump on you then it's going to be hard. This is why this is a medium matchup. The enemy is AD and builds attack speed, AD or AP items that will enhance their auto attacks and abilities. This means you need early armour to prevent their damage. You can use your CC to taunt them and fight, or alternatively, you can use your Q to escape. The enemy is quite mobile so be aware.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

This is a even matchup and can go pretty well for you. You can stop his jump with your E.

VS

Kindred

Easy

Take away her passive stacks and try to invade her. Buy early armor and you should be good to go!

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

This is a skill based matchup, you counter him but he also counters you. Try to use your Q when he dashes towards you. This will stop his damage and him getting close to you. Using your E will stop him from escaping.

VS

Malphite

Easy

This is a even matchup and can go pretty well for you. This is because it's tank versus tank. Dodge their CC with your Q and E.

VS

Maokai

Easy

This is a even matchup and can go pretty well for you. This is because it's tank versus tank. Dodge their CC with your Q and E.

VS

Master Yi

Medium

This can go either way. It is a good matchup for you, but if they get the jump on you then it's going to be hard. This is why this is a medium matchup. The enemy is AD and builds attack speed or AD that will enhance their auto attacks and abilities. This means you need early armour to prevent their damage. You can use your CC to taunt them and fight, or alternatively, you can use your Q to escape. The enemy is quite mobile so be aware.

VS

Olaf

Hard

His ultimate can stop your E and your Q. This is a horrible matchup so avoid fighting him after level 6. His kit is extremly hard to play against as he is a tank buster.

VS

Pantheon

VS

Shyvana

VS

Trundle

Medium

This is an easy matchup, but I'm putting it as Medium because Trundle is a tank buster. He will shred your armor. I would not recommend picking Rammus up against a Trundle.

VS

Tryndamere

VS

Zac

Medium

This is a even matchup and can go pretty well for you. This is because it's tank versus tank. Dodge their CC with your Q and E.

Early Game Back to Top

Early Game

red_line.png

The early game is pretty simple for 33.png Rammus and is the same as most tank Junglers. Except for one main difference, 33.png Rammus can gank lanes at level 3 and can completely snowball lanes thanks to his short cooldown puncturingtaunt.png taunt. You always want to start the Jungle camp where you can get a good leash. In some cases, you may want to go for a gank at level 2 (Like 81.png Ezreal.) However, this is very situational and in this case, you would need to start powerball.png Q first and puncturingtaunt.png taunt second. I would not recommend always doing this as it is incredibly risky.

You want to farm and keep ganking your allies when possible, if your ally has CC and can hold an enemy in place for a brief second, this will give you time to gank them. I recommend camping lanes and getting them ahead. If you cannot gank an enemy, then just farm and try to help the other lanes.

Lanes that are really good to gank are enemies who are Immobile, slow or have no defensive stats or Summoners. I especially like to camp Top lane- and if you have a fighter Top such as 58.png Renekton or 114.png Fiora, then this makes it much easier. This is because they can follow up on your engage.

You will have a hard time ganking lanes that are pushed (in the early game) and allies who have no crowd control.

red_line.png

Mid Game Back to Top

Mid Game

red_line.png

The mid-game is where 33.png Rammus really shines. 33.png Rammus should be rather tanky during this stage of the game and should have no trouble ganking lanes and helping allies out. During the mid-game, you should be being proactive as possible and trying to get your allies ahead. You want to keep ganking as much as possible, however, you need to find and sustain a healthy balance between ganking and farming. You should approach lanes with your powerball.png Q and then use your puncturingtaunt.png E and tremors2.png Ultimate to target them and deal damage to them.

You should try to focus on ganking who ever you can. There are a few different techniques to ganking, but the main thing to remember is be pro-active in ganking. You should try to gank laners who are strong and are easy to gank. For example lanes who have CC or lanes who are strong and ahead. You should also try to punish the enemies who are out of position. You can burst some enemies if they are squishy, but you may not always be able to kill them.

Make sure to keep an eye on taking Rift Herald, Dragons and Baron. Try your best to secure objectives too. Remember your tremors2.png Ultimate does damage to enemies, and double the damage to towers. This means you should gank lanes and push for the tower. Use your tremors2.png Ultimate on the tower and try to get it!

Global pressure is incredibly strong.

red_line.png

Late Game Back to Top

Late Game

red_line.png

The late game is just like the Mid game, you want to be focusing on starting fights and catching people out of position. You should try to puncturingtaunt.png taunt whoever you can and win fights. By the late game, you should have practically all your items built. This means you should be extremely tanky. If an enemy is missing a core summoner spell like their 4.png Flash from a previous fight, then you should focus them.

You can win the late game by who you focus- so make sure you focus the right person and remember, don't go in if your team is not there to help you.

red_line.png

Team Fighting Back to Top

Team Fighting

red_line.png

33.png Rammus has a few choices on who he should focus during team fights. 33.png Rammus is very good and can focus whoever he wants to in fights. Whilst you cannot solo kill and carry team fights- it's up to you as 33.png Rammus to target and CC the enemy and for your team to follow up.

Do not go in if your team is not there to help you.

Your first choice is to focus the enemy front line.

If your allies are quite squishy and prone to getting killed by the enemy frontline, then I recommend focusing the champion who is on your ally. This will not only protect them and allow them to regen, but it will also allow them to deal damage to them as they will be rather close to them in team fights.

Your next choice of focus is the enemy backline.

If the enemy is quite squishy and your team is nearby, you can use your taunt on the enemy who is the main carry. Beware you will not be able to deal too much damage to them, so make sure your team is there to follow you up.

Your final choice is the Support.

If the enemy is a utility Support like 117.png Lulu, 37.png Sona or 40.png Janna then you should focus them. This will not only allow your team to kill them but it will also stop the enemy ADC from escaping. This is because most Supports will pick up 3222.png Mikaels against you, and focusing them will stop their ADC from escaping. Most utility supports are also very squishy so this should be an easy takedown.

Of course, different scenarios warrant different focus, try your best to focus who you can.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Tips and Tricks

red_line.png

  • Dodge minions and monsters when your powerball.png Q is active.
  • Do not go in if you are low- especially if you're targetting an AD champion.
  • Do not go in if your team is not there to follow up.
  • You should not use your defensiveballcurl.png W whilst your powerball.png Q is activated as it will end it.
  • When taking Predator.png?width=32 Predator, use the speed bonus to counter gank lanes.
  • Do not waste your powerball.png Q, while it's good against Jungle camps and getting to lanes, make sure it is up and ready for fights and trades!
  • When taking Rift Scuttler, use either your powerball.png Q or puncturingtaunt.png E to reduce it's defensive stats!
  • You can reduce all the Jungles defensive stats by using your puncturingtaunt.png taunt or hitting them with your powerball.png Q.
  • You should use your tremors2.png Ultimate on towers to take them quickly! This is because your tremors2.png Ultimate does damage to towers.

red_line.png

Pros and Cons Back to Top

Pros and Cons

red_line.png

33.png Rammus is like every other champion and has his pros and his cons. Whilst 33.png Rammus is an incredibly fun and strong champion he does rely on his team to follow up and help him with his ganks. Unlike some champions, he doesn't really have the solo carry potential because he will lack damage.

Pros:

  • Fun champion.
  • He is easy to play.
  • Each to learn.
  • Incredibly strong against AD champions.
  • Can be kited quite easily.
  • Strong gank potentual.
  • Incredibly fast and can easily escape if need be.
  • High mobility thanks to his powerball.png Q and Predator.png?width=32 Predator.
Cons:
  • Relies on team to follow up.
  • Cannot solo carry (because he lacks damage.)
  • Whilst he uses his defensiveballcurl.png W he is incredibly slow.
  • Prone to kite enemies.
  • 33.png Rammus is not very strong when faced against full AP teams.

Jungle Routes Back to Top

Jungle Routes

red_line.png

33.png Rammus doesn't exactly have the healthiest clear compared to some champions. With that said there are a few different Jungle routes and paths you can take. Each has its benefits and its drawbacks, so take the one you're more comfortable with. I would recommend starting the buff that you can get a leash from, as this will allow you to get a much healthier clear.

Blue Buff > Wolves > Red Buff

Blue Buff > Witches > Red Buff

Red Buff > Wolves > Blue Buff

Red Buff > Witches > Blue Buff

If you're struggling and finding yourself running low in the Jungle early, you have a few options:

  1. Do not gank but instead recall. You can then reheal and go back to farming and ganking.
  2. Take the Rift Scuttler and regenerate some health. Also use your puncturingtaunt.png E or your powerball.png Q on the enemy to reduce the defensive stats of the Scuttler.
  3. Take the Honey Fruit around the map.
  4. Recall and purchase 2032.png Hunter's Potion.

Combos

red_line.png

33.png Rammus is a mechanically easy champion and doesn't have many combos. With that said- I had to make a combo's guide to include on this guide! There are some simple combos to 33.png Rammus but it's easy to get them wrong. This is because your defensiveballcurl.png W can cancel your powerball.png Q, and your powerball.png Q can cancel your defensiveballcurl.png W. Make sure to not use them all at the same time!

powerball.png Q + puncturingtaunt.png E + defensiveballcurl.png W - Approach with your powerball.png Q. Taunt the enemy and then use your defensiveballcurl.png W for the defense buff.

powerball.png Q + tremors2.png R + puncturingtaunt.png E + defensiveballcurl.png W - Approach with your powerball.png Q. Proc and use your Ultimate and then taunt the enemy. Whilst the enemy is taunted, use your defensiveballcurl.png W for the defensive buff.

powerball.png Q + defensiveballcurl.png W + puncturingtaunt.png E + tremors2.png R - Approach with your powerball.png Q then use your defensiveballcurl.png W for the defensive stats buff, after that you want to taunt the enemy and use your tremors2.png Ultimate.

tremors2.png R + puncturingtaunt.png E + defensiveballcurl.png W + powerball.png Q - This a combo if you catch an enemy out of position, such as walking into your brush. Use your tremors2.png Ultimate and taunt them. Then use your defensiveballcurl.png W streight after for the defense and rammuspassive.png Passive buff, and then hit them and CC them with your powerball.png Q.
