Summoner Spells Back to Top

I believe these are the only spells you should use on Riven, 4.png for mobility , 14.png for kill potential, or 12.png for map presence.

  • Going more in depth, 4.png is the best way to get kills in the laning phase, since Riven's damage is a LOT better if you don't have to waste your first 2 activations of Q just to close the gap between you and your opponent. Using the same principles, Flash is also a great engage/disengage spell, making it a MUST HAVE on Riven.

  • 14.png is a spell with many uses, you can start your combo from a brush at lvl 1 with ignite for the nice true damage which often leads to your enemies wasting a 4.png , giving you the edge in the lane and kill potential at any time with your 4.png on. Also, 14.png is very useful when your enemies use their health potions. Not many people do this but it will destroy your opponents sustain and give you a big edge if you started with the same number of potions.

  • Currently 12.png is what i am using when going top lane with most champions including 92.png.

  • 11.png Is necessary if you want to jungle. Although it is not recommended, jungle 92.png can be quite strong in the right hands. this is however out of the scope of this guide.

30.png31.png Poros are cute sooo =3

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

I always go 12-18. However you might want to take ArPen instead of CDR. Especially if using ArPen runes. Furthermore, I like stormraider's surge against ranged toplaners e.g. 126.png13.png

  • Maxing riventricleave.png is the usual way to go, simply put, it deals most damage
  • After that you have the choice of maxing Ki_Burst.jpg orValor.jpg
  • Max Ki_Burst.jpg if you want to zone enemies from CS with short (but high damage) trades
  • Max Valor.jpg if you want to tower dive, 2v1 the enemy laner and jungler when he ganks or harass under the enemy's turret with Broken_Wings.jpg + Ki_Burst.jpg and Valor.jpg out while tanking a tower it with the shield
  • Max them both at the same time when wanting the be a " Jack-of-all-trades-master-of-none"

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

This is the best start against weak laners in my opinion, gives a GREAT edge over the people who like to start with Dorans because of the extra potions, and beats those starting with corruption potion because of the extra combat stats
Get this vs difficult ad lane
If you are playing against an Auto Attack champion who is strong early (e.g. Tryndamere, Teemo, Quinn)
Usual start. not much to say, all around damage and sustain

Core Items

Get these every game. Will max CDR if you run CDR runes.
Get this if you need to push or need the extra burst
Core build if you need Damage
Great if you find yourself initiating fights
What my end-game build looks like most of the time.
    Against Full AD
    Against high Magic Damage
Tanky Build if you need to be the primary engage

Situational Items

Boots

3111.png3047.png3158.png

Get Lucidity if you need the CDR to max out. Get Tabi against heavily autoattack reliant toplaners e.g.23.png. Get Merc. In all other cases

Build Path

  • Most of the time start with 1036.png2003.png or 1055.png2003.png. For first back try to buy 3133.png (for longer trades) or 3134.png (for shorter trades) and work towards 3142.png. DO NOT BUY 1001.png IN FIRST BACK. Especially if you are going to 12.png back to lane. Getting another 1036.png gives you much more lane presence.

  • After 3142.png work towards 3071.png and your boots of choice. You do not have to buy tier 2 boots early as 92.png is already very mobile.

  • Usually third item is either 3074.png for more damage and wave clear, 3026.png for survivability, 3139.png against lots of CC or 3812.png if you are not running CDR runes.

OFFENSE

  • 3139_32.png Is an item that I get in place of 3074.png if the enemy team has a lot of CC.
  •  3156_32.png for magic resist( if they have a fed AP caster), also3155_32.png is very strong against AP laners (85_64.png 68_64.png 17_64.png)
  • 3812.png I rarely get this item as i max out CDR with cleaver + Ghostblade. However if you are fed and dont run CDR runes it is a great 3rd buy.

DEFENSE

  • 3075_32.png If they got 5AD team or fed ADC/Assassin
  • 3068_32.pngIf you need the armor + some hp
  • 3143_32.pngYou have a choice between this and 3068_32.png. Some prefer the damage, others prefer the slow. Up to you
  • 3102_32.pngIf you find yourself getting 1-shot
  • 3026_32.png Great item if you find yourself going first in team fights with flash
  • 3748.png Very mediocre item, i would not get it, 3074.png is much better
  • 3053.png Amazing item when combined with 3026.png. It makes you practically unkillable

OTHER

  • 2140_32.png Nice item if you are full build and need some extra damage
  • 2138_32.png Buy this if you find yourself initiating team fights/ need the CC reduction
  • 2043_32.png Most OP item in the game. Never forgetti.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Riven is one of the champs who hard-counter the butterfly. you can hard CC him AND out damage him while his sustain is destroyed by your aggression and disruption

VS

Akali

Easy

Buy a 2043_32.png at first back. Don't let her touch the cs, sometimes you can even zone her from xp range.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

This guy is a BEAST do not let him farm or he will get his health back. Avoid his rupture by any means, you can snowball on him if you have a good start

VS

Darius

Easy

after the juggernaut changes, Darius is now very easy to kill in lane. Dodge his Q with either Q or E and then engage on him. Remember to disengage before he gets 5 stacks.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

Dodge harass, try not to fight when his E is on, Try to bait him to use his ulti and kill him the second he pays the 20% of his current hp to start healing, ignite is your friend

VS

Elise

Easy

Start with E. After that take her on like usual. Be careful of her stun. If she is good you might want to rush a  1057_32.png  or a 3155_32.png

VS

Fiora

Medium

As long as you do not Stun her / Knockup her while her W is on you should win. Be careful of her damage. At lvl 6 you should be able to kill her.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

try to shield his q and jump on him when his skills are on cool down

VS

Garen

Medium

Garens tend to start with Q at lvl1. You should start with E and use it when you see his animation. It will cancel all the damage from his Q and you can out trade with your passive. Try not to fight while his W is on. Protip: 3155.png cancels his ult (unless you're the villain)

VS

Gnar

Medium

Go all in level one. Stay back when he is in mega form. You can cancel his E with your 3rd Q (this will usually result in a kill)

VS

Gragas

Medium

Pretty strong champion. Good damage, nice sustain. As long as you can shield his barrel or his W in lane you can out trade and harass him. Be careful of his stun on E

VS

Illaoi

Easy

Freelo lane. All her spells are slow skill shots that you can dodge. Just be careful not to get hit by her illaoiE.png. If she uses illaoiR.png you should disengage and fight another day (unless ahead)

VS

Irelia

Medium

Pretty even lane. dont get stunned under tower or she'll snowball in your face. play safe and try to harass as much as possible when her e is on cooldown call for jungler ganks. If you don't manage to kill her early, she will out scale you late game

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

After the buffs, Jarvan is quite strong, start with e and try to shield his passive autoattack. Deals Tons of Damage. The second he uses his Q / E jump on him

VS

Jax

Medium

His damage is so strong. don't engage on him. let him engage on you . try to shield his harass and stun when he jumps on you. Remember that his E diminishes AoE damage.

** Edit : After the jax nerfs in 4.10 you can now trade efficiently against him. Push the lane and dont let him CS, be extremely aggressive when his Counter strike is down

VS

Jayce

Medium

Much like most bruisers riven has problems with all ranged champions on top lane. Though in this case a well-played riven can beat a Jayce. still its very risky and i wouldnt pick her. Try to use the bush and wait till he goes hammer stance to regain mana. thats when you harass and try to make him OOM. Best way to get a kill is to harass pre-6 and flash + ulti after 6 for the kill ( only do that if he is under half hp ) DO NOT FORGET TO DODGE HES E-Q COMBO WITH YOU Q/E

VS

Kennen

Medium

Remember that his Lightning Rush costs about 1/2 of his total energy. Start with E to dodge harass. Rush 3155_32.png and 3111_32.png

VS

Lissandra

Medium

Easy match up if played right. Very difficult if not. Try to dodge her Q harass early. start with a point in E and build 3155_32.png and 3111_32.png. You can cancel her E with Q or W

VS

Malphite

Medium

you cant kill him, he cant kill you . try to out farm him in lane

VS

Maokai

Easy

He deals no damage to you, you deal good damage to him. Be careful of ganks and do not dive him since he can dodge one of your spells and root you under turret

VS

Mordekaiser

Easy

Mordekaiser has a very strong shield if played properly. still there are openings early game when you should take advantage of his bad armor and harass/kill him

VS

Nasus

Medium

Nasus can be very easy or very hard. You need to be VERY aggressive on lvls 1-2. The way i like to play against Nasus is get my + 19 ArPen runepage.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Don't let her farm. Take e at lvl 1 to block poke. Be careful of her cat form Q, deals more damage the lower your hp is

VS

Olaf

Easy

Olaf used to be a counter to riven. not any more his trading has gone down and his sustain needs him auto attacking. he is kind of a threat after lvl 6 but nothing a good riven can't handle

VS

Pantheon

Hard

This champion is honestly the hardest counter to Riven. Start 1029_32.png+5 and get 2 early points on E. Try to combo without using autoattacks as his passive negates them. After lvl 6 you are stronger since his ultimate gives him no combat advantage. He has no escapes so make sure to call for ganks

VS

Renekton

Hard

Skill lane. It could go either way, the better player and the better jungler will win the lane. just be careful for his empowered w and try to get to lvl 6 before he does. He is a BEAST at lvl 6

VS

Rumble

Easy

Do not stand in his rumblecarpetbomb.png. You should beat him easily as long as you trade often and ward to not get ganked.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

Be careful of her E mark, try to avoid fighting her when her w is up since the duration goes up while she autos. The second her w goes on CD jump on her. You can use the 3rd part of your Q to cancel her ulti.

VS

Sion

Easy

You have enough mobility to dodge all of his spells. Stun him while he is charging Q

VS

Teemo

Medium

Use the bush to your advantage. the first one to make a mistake dies

* Same as garen, just use the bush too. you should be able to kill him at 6 if hes stupid

VS

Trundle

Medium

His Bite drops your AD and his Ult makes him unkillable. However if you time your shield on his Q you can out trade him. Try to zone him from CS and even kill him if you get a nice lead. Try to back off when he ults. 14.png Is very useful in this matchup

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Just spam skills the usual way. Beware of his ragebar and lucky crits

VS

Xin Zhao

Easy

Stun after he jumps on you

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Do not fight until lvl 3. You should destroy him after that. Use your rivenfengshuiengine.png early and unpredictably for it not to get blocked by yasuoW.png.

CCCCCCCCCComboos Back to Top

AA = auto attack

3 = hydra/tiamat (Yeah i like Tiamat on 3, you can obviously bind it on whatever key you want)

Standard combos:

Valor.jpgBroken_Wings.jpgKi_Burst.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpg

example of harassing someone while he's cs'ing:

Broken_Wings.jpgKi_Burst.jpg+AA+Broken_Wings.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpg+AAValor.jpg

 E-Q-3-W

Valor.jpgBroken_Wings.jpgRavenous_Hydra_item.pngKi_Burst.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpg+AA

If you know you can't reach your opponent by only using Valor(E).

 E-3-R-W-Q

Valor.jpgRavenous_Hydra_item.pngBlade_of_the_Exile.jpg+AAKi_Burst.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpg

Same as before except I feel like I need my ult to kill them

 (Flash)-E-1-R-W-Q-R-Q

(Flash.png)Valor.jpgRavenous_Hydra_item.pngBlade_of_the_Exile.jpg+AAKi_Burst.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpg+AABroken_Wings.jpgWind_Slash.png

The " Killer Combo" this is how you get most of the kills in lane. This is how you get onto the enemy carries. If you have the time, use your AA in between spells for maximum damage, However it will not always be needed.

Protip:

You can use  Broken_Wings.jpg andWind_Slash.png at basically the same instance to save time and look awesome while killing people :)

You can use any spell right after using Valor.jpg to cancel the animation of that spell, mostly i use it with

Blade_of_the_Exile.jpg

Never use Valor.jpg and Broken_Wings.jpg together unless you are on top of your enemy already as it will cancel part of your E's dash.

Mechanics Back to Top

Auto attack Animation Cancelling

AA-cancel, is a way for champions to deal MORE damage in LESS time. Especially with 92.png, who has a very bad auto attack animation. Basically, what you gotta do is check to see, in what part of the big sword swing, 92.pngdeals the damage. Right after the damage is dealt(use the sound effects to your advantage), press one of your skills, Q, W, E or even R to cancel the rest of the animation. This can deal to Explosive amounts of damage in very little time !!! This can be also used with other champions like 58_64.png39_64.png , 81_64.png and more!

Ability Animation Cancelling (Requires some experience)

You can cancel the long animation of any activation of your Q by issuing a movement command right beside your target and then instantly issuing an auto attack command either by clicking on the enemy or using attack-move. This, combined with AA-cancel known as the "Fast Combo".

Note: This is most useful against an immobile opponent

Ability Buffering

You can use (buffer) an ability while using another ability so that it is used right after the animation is finished. This can be used with E and any other ability to "mask" the second ability's animation. This is most useful to cancel the long animation of R1 during a close fight.

Using the above 3 mechanics you can create your OWN combos and have your OWN play style. This is the best part of playing Riven.

Wall Jumping

Using Q3 92.png can jump over small walls and structures. This makes Q3 have an extended range. Especially useful when chasing or escaping. (requires some practice as you have to be facing the wall you want to jump over).

Broken Wing Dancing

Against champions with a lot of skill shots you can use  Broken_Wings.jpg to go THROUGH them while fighting. Going back and forth unpredictably will let you dodge skill shots while damaging them. Do note that your cursor will have to be behind the enemy champion (or in any case, NOT on top of them) in order for Q to travel full range.

Why Pick Riven? Back to Top

20.png Pros:

  • Great laning phase
  • Can Carry games(AKA good for solo queue)
  • Strong at every part of the game
  • Solid ganks if you want to roam
  • AoE helps a lot in team fights
  • Very Versatile (Can split push, peel, be an initiator or an assassin)

3.png Cons:

  • Very high skill-cap
  • CC shuts her down
  • Not very strong if behind
  • Unsafe to blind pick as she has some hard counters 58.png80.png

How to Win the lane Back to Top

Wave Control

Push - Killing the minions faster than the natural flow of last hits

  • There are two main types of pushing: Soft Pushing and Hard Pushing (Shoving)
  • This can give you a level advantage early on which can be an opportunity for an "All In"

Soft Push - Killing the minions fast enough to level up early without moving the wave

  • This is mainly used as soon as the lane starts to attempt a level 2 "All in" while your opponents are still level 1.

Shove (Hard Push) - Pushing your minion wave to their tower (through the use of abilities)

  • If your opponent is in lane this will make last hitting harder
  • If your opponent is out of lane this will deny them exp and gold

Freezing - Controlling the push so the wave stays in a single location

  • This is a method used mainly to zone your opponents out of last hits and possibly exp
  • This requires a SOLID advantage to already be set (be it a range, health, item, or level advantage)
  • To perform freezing, avoid killing some of your opponents minions (3 ranged creeps will do), tank their damage to keep them in place and then last hit once the new waves come in.
  • Freezing is easiest to perform after resetting the wave or when you opponent pushes but doesn't manage to shove.
Note: Exp, CS, or other "soft" advantages aren't enough. You need a "solid" advantage. A CS advantage becomes a solid item advantage after you've shopped. An exp advantage becomes a solid advantage after you've gained a level (being 30 exp up doesn't matter when your both level 5 but being level 6 while they're still level 5 is a huge advantage).

Wave Resetting - Causing the wave to push back toward the middle of the lane

  • The most common way to do this is to Shove
  • It's important that after their tower clears the wave to switch from shoving to Last Hitting; this will allow the wave to push out and "reset"
  • An alternative way to reset the wave is to heavily harass your opponents. If they have no sustain besides life steal, they'll need to auto attack more frequently to regain HP, thus pushing the wave. Again this will only work if you stop pushing and last hit
  • This strategy is most useful when you've run low on wards and want to farm safely near your tower or you know they have no wards and want to zone them with jungle pressure.

Combat

Trade - Any quick exchange of damage

  • A trade can be positive, negative or even.

Ideal Trade (Free Damage) - A trade where you output damage but don't receive any

  • This is ultimately what you're attempting to do every time you trade
  • Being able to perform this efficiently makes you a TRADE MASTER.

Bad Trade (yolo trading) - A trade where you don't care how much damage

you take

  • In order for this to work  you need to have wave control; if you're zoned and thus can't life steal it's not likely to work
  • On the flip side this strategy will help keep a zoned enemy at check.

Stances (Lane positioning)

Trading Stance - Positioning yourself in such a way to force your opponent to choose

between Last Hitting and trading with you

  • Stand on the minion with low hp. The enemy will have to chose between trading and last hitting
  • Try to stand on this line right when the minion is about to die.
  • If you time it correctly your opponent will be forced to either trade with you and miss the minion or get the minion and take free damage.
  • This stance is easier to perform when you have the wave Soft Pushing.
  • This Stance is an effective way to Zone if you have the wave Stilled (Frozen).

Farming (CSing) Stance - Positioning yourself defensively so if the opponent attempts to

trade on you they grab creep aggro (Abuse this to win ranged match ups 126_64.png76_64.png)

  • Stand at the back of your minion wave and last hit passively; don't look to initiate trades
  • If your opponent forces a trade, don't back down, if you've positioned properly you have your minions helping in the trade.
  • This stance works best when you have a bigger wave then your opponent but for some reason want to play defensively. (Soft Pushing)

Who Am I? Back to Top

I am Costas Kamby aka Big Dixxay, a Greek, Diamond League of Legends  player and i have mained  92_64.png since i hit lvl 30 in season 2. Like most Riven players i have an (overly) aggressive play style. My mentality is " Go big or go home". This is why i like Riven, a high-risk high-reward champion that rewards aggressive, but calculated mechanically intensive play. I have over 1000 total games with her and would like to share my knowledge with you guys you can always add me in game and i will be more than happy to teach you in game.

my twitch stream (although i rarely stream): twitch.tv/costaskamby

Armor Penetration (Don't read it if you don't like math) Back to Top

Season 3 onward Armor penetration was changed. From then on, percentage (%) penetration scales first, meaning that getting a Black Cleaver 3071.png or any Last Whisper item AND a Ghostblade 3142.png amplifies your effective armour shred.

  • 100-100*25% = 75 armor
  • after that, 75-20 armor = 55 armor
In season 2, FLAT  ArmorPen would be calculated first thus :

  • 100-10=90 armor
  • after that 90-90*35% = 58.5 armor
This can be further abused with ArPen Runes and masteries. This also explains why Cleaver and Ghostblade are the two most important Core items on Riven.

Synergy: Champions to unleash Riven's full potential Back to Top

92_64.png works best in a Hard Engage or a Wombo-Combo comp. Her strong AoE damage makes her a great asset in team fights and skirmishes alike. However, if you find yourself in a different composition (e.g a poke comp) you can always be a split pusher (12.png helps a lot in this case)

Mid Laners:

61_64.png10_64.png117_64.png

  • 61_64.png Oriana is petty much the best you can have with riven. She Shields you, Speeds you up, and uses your gapclosers for a notorious Ball delivery! Her ultimate piles champions on top of each other so you can kill more than 1 at the same time! How lovely <3
  • 10_64.png Kayle's ulti gives Riven the ability to initiate fights. Flash in, get ulted, wreck face for 3 seconds (you won't need more). Also, if she builds 3085_32.png her passive armor reduction on enemies is pretty nice. To top it all off, she also has a heal/speed boost to help you engage.
  • 117_64.png Pretty much the same reason as Kayle. Shield, Speed up, slows the enemy team, and her ultimate is just amazing

Junglers:

54_64.png32_64.png59_64.png80_64.png154_64.png113_64.png

  • As 92_64.png, you are a very strong fighter, but you will die fast when focused down and CC'ed. Thus, you should not be going in first (unless you have something to protect you)
  • 54_64.png is pretty much the best initiator in the game. Follow up his ultimate with your damage
  • 32_64.png is the teamfight god. His ultimate will root in place pretty much the whole enemy team while his Q lets him initiate. What better chance to go in and kill the ADC's ?
  • 59_64.png Initiates with the E-Q combo and ult them. You can pass through his ultimate with either E or any activation of Q(how awesome is that?!). His cataclysm keeps them in place for you to kill.
  • 80_64.png Though not as strong an initiator as the rest, a good use of his ulti can give you a great opportunity to engage. His early game pressure is much higher compared to the rest of the junglers and can help you snowball
  • 154_64.png Good engage and good ganks. Hes not as strong right now, but with a good teamcomp he can work wonders

Supports:

1_64.png412_64.png89_64.png143_64.png12_64.png
  • 1_64.png Flash + ulti stun on whole enemy team. She has great engage and lots of damage.
  • 412_64.png A clutch hook can catch an opponent off guard and turn fight into a 4v5. He can use Q to initiate help you get to the enemy backline with his lantern. His ultimate makes the enemy team a lot less mobile giving you easy way to kill everyone <3
  • 89_64.png If your jungler is not a tank, or is afraid to initiate FEAR NOT Leona's long ranged ultimate and CC will help keep the enemies in place and engage on them for you to kill
  • 143_64.png Her ultimate is quite good in teamfights and her root has a long range helping you secure kills in skirmishes.
  • 12_64.pngYOU CAN'T MILK THOSE!! He's like 54_64.png but in the support role ! Very tanky, amazing CC and good initiator.

ADC's / Marksmen

15_64.png22_64.png110_64.png
  • 15_64.png's ultimate is a great engage tool. Have her ult to force a teamfight
  • 22_64.png's Enchanted Crystal Arrow can be used to start teamfights. Her on-hit slows are very helpful while chasing
