Summoner Spells Back to Top

14.png Ignite
This summoner spell is a jewel on a Champion like Riven, it allows for more damage which in turn means more kill potential, with a little debuff to add to it which reduces the healing effect of enemy Champions.

Use it to increase your maximum damage output and pick up that kill which you would've usually let gone away.

4.png Flash
This summoner spell is a must pretty much on any Champion, it allows you to teleport a short distance towards your cursor, it can also be used to teleport through walls. I advise trying out which walls you can teleport through in a Custom game, but be creative.

It can be used to secure kills, escape and even engage. Flash is a summoner spell that allows for outplay, and it is extremely vital.

NOTE:
I don't use nor do I intend to put Barrier and Teleport as optional summoner spells for Riven, because I feel like they'd be wasted on her because of all the potential can only be maximized through using Ignite/Flash.

Passive: Runic Blade
I noticed how many guides don't explain what her passive is, and what it does and lastly what you should do with it. Since it is still an ability, just not an active I will take the time to explain what it is. Runic Blade is a passive which empowers your auto-attacks after using an ability, it will stack up to 3 times, and it scales on AD, this is one of your greatest powers and the key to maximizing your damage output and lastly mastering Riven as a Champion.

Q: Broken Wings
Her Q has three different parts, a basic explanation would be that she slashes while dashing forward while dealing an amount of damage to the enemies infront of her (Area of Effect) Great for clearing waves and dealing damage to the enemy Champion, this is your most valuable skill as you will be using this to deal damage aswell as cover distance.

The most basic combo for Q is:
Q > Auto-attack > Q > Auto-attack > Q > Auto-attack
This allows you to use your passive ability's damage while dealing some damage with your Q ability, this combo also allows you to stay ontop of your opponent because the Q covers some distance while you dash forward, the movement speed can be compared to a nifty 550 movement speed.

W: Ki Burst
Her W makes Riven shout and release a shockwave that damages and momentarily stuns enemies close to her, although the range for the stun is short and the stun itself is also very short, it can be used to interrupt and chain combo your enemies, do not underestimate it's potential.

NOTE:
You want to max W over E in most match-ups, except the ones that doesn't go in your favor because having a short cooldown, damaging stun in your arsenal is a devastating weapon, it sums up to more stuns, more damage and less time for your opponent, it is extremely annoying to fight against.

Because of the long delay time after using your W, Riven will stand for a few milliseconds doing nothing, you can cancel this animation by activating her Q, this will save time which is the choice between life or death in many occasions.

E: Valor
With her E, Riven dashes forward a short distance while giving herself a shield. This is your main mechanicsm of defense and should not be underestimated aswell, it scales on AD and will save your life a countless amount of times. It can be used to cover distance, engage and as an escape.

NOTE:
The only times you want to max E over W is when you're up against a bad match-up.

R: Blade of the Exile
Riven's ultimate skill is what makes her one of the most scariest champions to lane against because of how strong she becomes because of it, she recieves a percentage of AD ontop of what she already had to begin with, this skill also increases her auto-attack range AND her ability range, yes you heard me, her Q will turn into a shredder that will clear minion waves from afar, with the third proc you could steal Ancient Golem (Blue Buff) From over the wall, her W becomes a short-stun with an incredible range, not to mention that her E recieves an immense buff because of how it scales on AD. Now this is not the most amazing part, the second part of the ultimate is called Wind Slash, it has a slight delay before you can use it after activation, but it's primarily used as an finisher, and a great one at that, it can finish off low-health enemies from afar, with a mediocre range.

NOTE:
Same with her W, the activation of her ultimate also has a slight delay which is the downside because your enemy is able to react to your engage, but this is not the case here. There is a key to cancelling your ultimate in numerous ways, my personal favourite is activating her E, in mid-dash if you activate your ultimate it will cancel the delay and at the end of the dash you will have your ultimate ready, activating your W after the ultimate will cancel the ultimate's animation but will leave you with the W's delay, this can be cancelled by using Q.

A maximum damage output combo with Riven will look like something like this:
E > R > W > Q > Auto-attack > Q > Auto-attack > Q > Auto-attack > R

What some people don't know is that you can also cancel her ultimate's second part's animation AS WELL.
E > R > W > Q > Auto-attack > Q > Auto-attack > R > Q > Auto-attack

FINAL NOTE:
The key to mastering Riven is cancelling her animations, this is what most people don't know and insist that they know how to play her well enough.

I might just be a low-gold player, I might not be the best Riven player out there. But I sure can teach you how to become the best.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Doran's Blade + 1 Health Potion (Personal favourite)
Rejuvunation Bead + 1 Sight Ward + 5 Health Potions
Cloth Armor + 5 Health Potions
Long Sword + 3 health potions

Core Items

    Offensive items
    lifesteal
    boots
    Defensive

Situational Items

    Situational

I don't want to write too much regarding the items here because it is all about your personal preference, I will only tell you what's good on Riven and WHY.

Offensive Items:
Last Whisper is an extremely good item for AD Assassins as it boosts your Armor Penetration which is just about needed to kill those bulky targets, but more or less punish those squishy targets. Onto Black Cleaver also an item for Armor Penetration, it is good on Riven because she can easily proc the Unique Passive which reduces the enemies' armor for each hit at a cap, early on you want to get a Brutalizer for some easy cooldown reduction on Riven.

Lifesteal:
The reason I listed these under Lifesteal and not Offensive Items is because the order you build them in can vary from time to time it all depends on the enemy Champions you're facing against, what I want to tell you is when to build them and why? When you are up against an enemy with a good wave clear you want to go with the Ravenous Hydra because of it's passive which makes your auto-attacks AoE-based and also the Active which damages enemies around yourself, now this is great so that you won't be pushed up against your tower, and the other matchups would be great to go Bloodthirster against.

Boots:
The type of boots which you want to get is completely situational, do you want to reach the 40% cap for cooldown reduction? Is your enemy Champion a tough nut to crack and you need more defenses? Is the enemy team filled with hard-CC Champions? this is what I want you to think about while deciding.

NOTE:
If you've decided to go for the cooldown reduction boots, you ONLY want to get this either if you're facing an opponent which you will need the cooldown reduction OR if you've reached the 30-40 minute mark where you already finished your Last Whisper.

Defensive:
Defensive items are usually built very late on, or when you are doing pretty bad. The Guardian Angel should be pretty straight forward, it revives your Champion after a short amount of time, Randuin's Omen will give you a nice amount of Armor and a great Active to go along with it, Maw of Malmortalshit will protect you against MR and give you a nice passive shield when you take magical damage.

Situational:
Go with Mercurial Scimitar when you are unable to avoid the enemy teams' or a specific champion's CC ability, and the complete opposite for Youmuu's Ghostblade, you want to build this when the enemy team is complete rid of CC abilities, to be able to abuse it's active to the fullest, it can pretty devastating if used well. Zephyr as a last item when you sell your boots for the Tenacity bonus without sacrificing any worthwhile stats.

Special thanks & Credits Back to Top

I want to use the last section to give my thanks to these people for what they've done for me and this guide, and I hope that in the end that you really did learn something.

Kapein (General Kapein)
My friend from some time before which gave me the inspiration to start playing Riven, and how he helped me create my own playstyle, I will admit that I did make a slight replica of his.

Gbay99
A YouTuber which is pretty popular for the informational videos he has been making for quite some time now, for both experienced and new players. the most valuable piece of advice he has ever given me is how you should never lose your creativity to make plays, experienced players get hung up on mechanism and forget the fun part of diving, fighting 1v3 because they are afraid of losing, throwing aside that scared side of yourself, and allowing yourself some creativity will create the opportunity to make plays.

John-tan (Only Riven NA/Meliong)
Another friend which runs a semi-League blog with some NSFW posts, a huge Riven player himself much better than me I'd say, he knows the correct mechanics and the defensive sides aswell and how you should play against different match-ups.

Dale (SilverPepper)
A great person, another great friend and lastly one of my biggest inspirations to improve my play with Riven, from another Riven player to another, he has developed another playstyle by himself and it is what makes us different from eachother, this is what each player should attempt to develop overtime to improve yourself.

Thomas (Customer Support)
One of the first friends on League that I made online, it wasn't until later that we really started talked. I want to thank him for allowing me to play Riven in normals with him and trying out different things and lastly for not hating me for who I am.

Simon (Kiki the Witch)
One of the best friends I could've ever dreamt of meeting and even get the chance to befriend, great inspiration to make me continue playing League and Riven at all, a great Riven player himself I believe him to be better than me.

Special thanks to:
