Summoner Spells Back to Top

Generally speaking, and definitely in higher ELO, teleport is a must. In lower ELOs and certain situations ignite is acceptable. Regardless, if you feel like you need to snowball earlier in order to win the game, take ignite and make sure your team knows that you did not take teleport

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

These are 100% geared for CD reduction and damage. No matter what item path you plan on taking, I would recommend these masteries. If you use the runes that i provided, this will make your early-mid game presence immensely strong.

R>Q>E>W, generally. If you're getting shit on by a Quinn or Ryze or some other ranged champion, then you can always max E first. You can also get Q then W second if you want to go for a cheesy level 2 kill.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

99% of the time take this
If you're really scared of your opponent and they are AD based.

Core Items

A balanced build for a team that has AP and AD you need to worry about. IF YOU'RE AGAINST AN AP LANER RUSH HEXDRINKER.
Later in the game once you start to fall off switching to Titanic is usually a good idea
You will reach 45% CDR without these but if you don't want to use my Runes/Masteries then these are a good option

Situational Items

Spirit Visage - Usually dont get, but is good vs heavy AP teams and gives you additional life steal. Sunfire - when they had lots of AD threats. Blood Thirster / Duskblade / Youmuu's - When you're fed! These items are all good on Riven, espescially Youmuu's! Banshees Veil - When they have a lot of AP damage and a CC thats destroying you.
A more risky/aggressive version of Banshees. Very good for getting you out of sticky situations, but there's just not room for in in most builds.

The idea of adapting Riven for the new Meta is ALL in the item build. All Riven players have had the experience of stomping lane, then not being able to kill anyone 30-40 minutes into the game and then you lose terribly, and this is because of the Tank Meta, and some of the new items Riot put into the game. For your Runes and Masteries you still generally want to be as aggressive and focused on early game as you can.  But since the tank Meta is here and many people take damage dealing carries in the jungle, you usually cant go full glass cannon riven anymore. If you do you will fall off super hard late game. This build i found is a perfect balance of the two. I will outline what you generally want to do and then explain why.

Steps -
1. Build Ravenous Hydra. This item is very good cancelling animations and gives you everything you want on Riven.
1.5. Build Maw of Malmortius. So if you are against an AP laner most of the time you will want to rush hex drinker, then finish Ravenous Hydra, then finish Maw. You can finish Maw first if you are being rekt, or if you are destroying them you can skip this item until later.
2. Build Black Cleaver and finish boots if you haven't yet. Gives you some tankiness and much needed armor shred, boots are always nice to finish since mobility is key in this game.
3. Build Deaths Dance. This item is awesome. It gives you AD and lifesteal AND CDR, all very important on Riven, BUT it also makes you tankier, which is the reason you get this instead of Blood Thirster.
4. Build DeadMans Plate. Getting offensive bonuses from a defensive item is always nice. This will give you armor and HP, and the passive will make you're autos hit a bit harder, this also plays very nicely with your ThunderLords proc for some nice burst.

As i said earlier, if you feel you need to be tankier late game, you can always switch Ravenous Hydra over for Titanic, or opt to take one of the situation items i posted. The point of taking Riven is to have a damage threat in the Top Lane though, so i would stick to these core items as much as possible.

IF THE ENEMY TEAM IS ALL AD - Do not build Maw or Mercs. Build Deadmans where you would normally build Maw. Then later in the game you can choose between building another tanky item like Sun Fire, or choose to go more offensive with Blood Thirtser or Mercurial scimitar or Duskblade or Youmuu's. As for boots, either go Ninja Tabi or Boots of swiftness, i would recommend Ninja Tabi for that insane passive.

Riven is a champion that can snowball very quickly. If you start getting fed early and want to build more aggressively, go right ahead. Generally speaking though, this core build is the best scaling into mid-late game.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Not a common match up, but can be annoying. Still stick to the core build but i would recommend ignite in this lane.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Not a common match up, but can be very annoying. If they are going more AP oriented use the Maw Build, otherwise use the core build. Stick to TP for this match up generally.

VS

Darius

Hard

This match is one of my least favorites. Darius is super strong right now and his damage scales well even with building full tank. If you want to play it safe take TP and cloth 5 and ask for some jungle support. If you want to go ham you can usually win a level 4 or 5 all in. And if you position the minion wave so you hit 6 first you will obviously win that fight.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Go for an early kill. Take ignite and try to get ahead before he is too tanky. If you dont want to do this, take TP and farm like hell, stick to the core build so you will scale.

VS

Ekko

Hard

Ekko is just broken right now. The matchup isn't terrible, but since Ekko is just such a good champ even if you get early kills he will come back and be a huge play maker. I recommend TP and the core build for most scenarios. If you're feeling confident then go ignite.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Pretty much a skill match up. Make sure to play around riposte and you should be fine though. summoner choice is up to you on this one.

VS

Fizz

Medium

Fizz is always an annoying champ. If they are going tank fizz then stick to the core build, if they are going more AP then rush Maw. probably want to take TP for this one.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Ward up and take ignite. Riven has many ways to outplay GP barrels. The only annoying thing is that he can use his removescurvy.png to beat your rivenmartyr.png, but that isnt too big of an issue if you use your e and q to control distance properly.

VS

Garen

Hard

This is generally a hard match up. Take TP and stick to the core build. You can test him early with trades, but  if the Garen plays properly there's not too much you can do. Consider roaming or invading enemy jungle so that you are still pertinent to the game.

VS

Gnar

Medium

Pretty easy pre-6. And you should win duels with Gnar the whole game, except maybe for super super late game.

VS

Gragas

Medium

Lots of ways to dodge gragasbarrelroll.png and gragasbodyslam.png, so this match up is a pretty easy lane. Ward up and have fun

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Illaoi is a pretty underrated champ, and you wont go against her often. But if you go against a good Illaoi this turns into a very hard match up. Take ignite and use e/q to dodge tentacles and brawl early.

VS

Irelia

Hard

This match up is generally advantageous for the one who controls trades better. It is easier for an Irelia to do this, and thats why this is a hard match up. If you trade with her after she uses ireliaequilibriumstrike.png to last hit a minion or her ireliahitenstyle.png runs out, then you will generally win the trade. But if she plays safe and has both of those up all the time, it will be a very hard lane, but you can definitely out snowball her, so call for your jungler.

VS

Jax

Hard

Jax is just a really solid champ since he can build tank and get offensive stats. Play around his jaxcounterstrike.png and you can win trades. I would still take TP and play fairly passive though.

VS

Jayce

Medium

You should win early without to many troubles, so just make sure to scale. The only weird interaction is that Jayce  jayceE.png animation can knock you out of stun range before your rivenmartyr.png animation is finished.

VS

Kayle

Medium

Go hard pre 6. Use bushes to your advantage and trade whenever rivenfeint.png is available. Post 6 you should still beat her early game, but you need to build hexdrinker first.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

Skill match up. I LOVE this match up because i played it countless times in season 3/4. Take ignite if you want kill pressure.

VS

Lissandra

Hard

If Lissandra manages her mana well then there is not a whole lot you can do. Build hexdrinker and roam/invade.

VS

Malphite

Medium

Take ignite and kill early. But he will be able to out-tank you later for sure.

VS

Maokai

Medium

You can kill him fairly easily until level 16 ish. So take ignite and play smart. You cannot just run into Mao blindly as he will kill you. Trade when his e or q is down from last hitting.

VS

Nasus

Medium

You should be able to kill him early, but everyone knows late game Nasus is unstoppable.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Pretty much a skill match up. Not a whole lot to say about this one. Probably take TP and play it fairly safe.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Use rivenfeint.png when he pantheon_throw.png and he will just waste his mana. Once he is low on mana feel free to go in and kill him. Take ignite for sure.

VS

Poppy

Hard

Poppy is also super good right now. and her poppyparagonofdemacia.png absolutely counters Riven. Take TP and play safe, use core build to scale. Invade/Roam when possible.

VS

Quinn

Hard

You get super out ranged. Max E and take TP. Invade/Roam if possible

VS

Rammus

Hard

Not super common anymore but you're basically just fucked if they take Rammus

VS

Renekton

Hard

Renekton is the classic counter to Riven. If you trade when his renektonpreexecute.png or renektoncleave.png is on cooldown then you might be able to win trades. The only way to win this lane is by outplays or jungler help.

VS

Rengar

Medium

A good rengar is super annoying, but also rare. You can rivenfeint.png and cancel that animation with rivenmartyr.png when he jumps on you from a bush for an instant shield + stun.

VS

Rumble

Medium

You should be able to kill early, as long as you dont fight in large minion waves, since Rumbles generally push. Last hit under turret(should be easy on Riven) and wait for appropriate times to trade, like when his rumbleflamethrower.png is on CD

VS

Ryze

Medium

Not as bad as people usually think! Rush Hexdrinker or all the way to Maw. You have kill pressure until late game. Other than that you can stick to the regular build, i recommend ignite here as well.

VS

Shen

Medium

Generally you wont get killed but wont be able to kill him. TP is a must vs Shen to try to account for his shenstandunited.png. Just farm and invade/roam to scale.

VS

Singed

Easy

Very easy to kill early on and you have lots of ways to catch him. Once he has reylais this turns into a medium-hard difficulty match up since he can usually just kite you. When that happens just follow league 101 and dont chase him

VS

Sion

Medium

Trade when his deathscaressfull.png is down and use your rivenfeint.png/riventricleave.png to dodge his crypticgaze.png. You will win trades early and have kill pressure until late game. Take ignite! But he will be a menace in the later game, and make sure your team knows when he goes back post 6 since of his ult gank potential

VS

Swain

Hard

Max E and pray for an outplay

VS

Teemo

Medium

Better than most melees into Teemo. rivenfeint.png his blindingdart.png and after that combo him out as fast as possible, which should be very fast since they are teemo. Thunderlords is a must here

VS

Trundle

Medium

Trundle is a pretty bad match up. You have kill pressure pre-6, but after that you have to be smart about trades and tentative on all ins due to his trundleR.png

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

Surprisingly bad match up most of the time. And also an extremely snowbally lane. Whoever gets the small advantages can usually kill the other. Try to trade when his mockingshout.png isnt on you and never forget about his undyingrage.png

VS

Vladimir

Easy

This lane is easy mode. You out damage him by a ton early, so take ignite and go ham. You can take rivenmartyr.png second in this match up to go for some early cheese.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Straight forward lane, stick to the core build, take TP or Ignite, doesnt really matter. You should be able to win this pretty easily. That being said, dont underestimate wukongs damage

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Skill match up. Timing rivenmartyr.png as he uses yasuoE.png is hard to get used to but is a pretty crucial mechanic of the match up.

Notes Back to Top

When in doubt roam/invade enemy jungle. If you cant do that for some reason then farm the best you can!
Many of the above match ups can go from medium -> easy and hard -> medium if you have good mechanics.
If you aren't aware of all of Riven's unique mechanics then watch this video -> https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=azfhS76_6fE
You will be surprised how much these help you. Once they all become second nature your damage output and survivability sky rockets. Dont be shy to make a custom game with some bots to practice all the animation cancels and wall hops. Literally every single cancel has a legitimate use in real situations, and it will take some time to become accustomed to recognizing those, so dont get frustrated and give up if you're not getting the results you want instantly.

Riven can also be played mid. I found this build through experimenting in the top lane, but Riven mid is definitely an option. That being said, i wouldnt recommend it unless you are an experienced Riven player who is familiar with all the mechanics. This is because you are almost always outranged and item builds/runes/masteries change accordingly.

Have fun! =p
