CAPTAIN FLASH

4.png
Flash is mandatory for Riven cuz it extends her mobility even further, allows you to catch your opponent of guard even more times and so on =)

ME BOTLANE, ME PUSH AND GET TP GANKED SO ME TILT

12.png
Thats all i have to say... well not really xD
First of all I would always run TP over Ignite because you don't know if the enemy jungler is premade with your toplane opponent and is gonna camp you.
Second of all, the ganks that you can pull off.
Yes, i know, TP duration got nerfed again but in this Elo people are still overextending really hard and if you have your eyes on the map, especially if you have your Ultimate and/or Flash up then there are good chances that you can get some kills for sure!

And remember: even in a matchup which you should win TP could be better since there is always a chance that you misplay and get behind, your teleport will allow you to compensate for that mistake and get you back to lane.
As a Riven i feel like i have enough damage and mobility anyways to kill my opponent so there is no Ignite needed =)

Masteries Back to Top

This is the best early game page for most cases, if you think you can get alot of autohits off in lane you should go fervor of battle tho.  The CDR in the cunning tree gives you 15% CDR at lvl1 which is a good start and the flat health is helpful too if you may lose a trade or two. If you are confident enough you can also go 12/18/0 of course. I would go double edged sword and bounty hunter since Rivens snowball is really huge.

And pls, dont go cookies on Riven or MYM Silphi is probably gonna flame the shit outta you :^)

Riven is like a mix between Assassin and Bruiser for me, you can play her both ways.
She only deals physical damage with her abilities.

You can skill your abilities like this if you face melees, your Q max will do insane dmg and increase your oneshot-with-1-combo potential especially with your ult on. The E max second increases your mobility drastically, especially if you rush 45% cdr you will have that amount for sure if you do well and reach lvl 14 which gives your shield a 3.5 second cooldown or so.

(I got a special section for Combos and usage of abilities in general, this will be just a general description of what they do)

But let me describe the abilities with my own words first if you don't know what im talking about:

rivenpassive.png

* Runic Blade*

Every time Riven casts a spell, she will stack up her passive up to 3 times.

This passive enhanches her next autoattacks, especially in the later stages of the game you will do crazy damages with just your authits and this passive to squishies.

riventricleave.png

* Broken Wings *

People call this ability the bread and butter of Riven and yes, its your main damage spell.
You strike forward or right at where you standing if you hover over an enemy unit, deal damage and can reactivate it again 2 times - the third time it will be a knockup that strikes all units it hits a little bit back.

Riven can use it 3 Times but the cooldown starts when you activate it first so you can charge it up, recharge before the time runs out (which is 4 seconds until reuse) and so on to use it again on a much shorter cooldown.
It even has no cooldown if you are at 30% cdr and do it like that - fun fact: boxbox calls this the Q buffer.

rivenmartyr.png

* Ki Burst *

Stuns your opponent for 0.75 seconds and damages him in a circle.

rivenfeint.png

* Valor *

Riven dashes forward and gets a shield for 1.5 seconds that scales with her  Bonus AD.

Its a very useful spell so we max it second, it can for example shield DOT's (damage over time spells) like ignite or dodge crucial skillshots (i.e. Blitzcrank Hook).

This one will also come in handy when it comes to combos and animation canceling with abilities and items like tiamat/hydra.

rivenfengshuiengine.png

* Blade of the Exile *

Riven forges her sword, giving her more autoattack range and more range on her spells aswell.
In addition she's able to fire a nuke skillshot that damages the opponent based on how many health he has called Windslash (low health -> more dmg).

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

safest start in terms of lane control (vs melee)
    safest start
best start if you want to snowball since longsword is a warhammer component

Core Items

    This is my core
Warhammer into Black Cleaver if you play against 2 tanks or more is highly recommended
Go this if the enemies lack in tanks and cc and/or you want to catch up with them in terms of mobility
This could be an endgame build
Example for Endgame build vs heavy ap team
Example vs heavy ad team ( i think tabi is quite broken atm if that changes replace with cdr boots )

Situational Items

A more scaling and tanky build, i wouldnt recommend it for the most times (since if you pick riven you want to kill the enemies as quick as possible), u could replace warmogs with a ghostblade here for more damage
I made the best experience with rushing Warhammer, then cdr boots and then straightup the Hydra. Later i finish black cleaver or directly get a tank item.

I think Guardians Angel as defensive item is really good on Riven since you can carry a lot of teamfights by baiting out abilities and stuff if you play it correct and use the passive of this item wisely.

VS

Ahri

Easy

For Midlane Riven:
Your rivenfeint.png at level 1 is good vs her harass, you will beat her if she doesn't kite or makes even 1 mistep. At level 6 your kill pressure is really high on her if you play it right, take 14.png Ignite and rekk that kid.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

If he uses his rupture.png first you have a good chance to all in him just autohit him with your passive during the silence and it should be fine.

In addition, if he starts vorpalspikes.png E first you can easily bully him out of lane.

Be careful tho, good cho's will silence you first and then rupture and autohit you and you can't do shit vs. them. In that case you should focus on Last Hitting creeps.

VS

Darius

Easy
You can rivenfeint.png Valor into him everytime he casts his dariuscleave.png Decimate, get almost no damage and trade him well then since you stand right in his face and he burned his main damage spell.
This Matchup used to be a pain in the ass but since the Darius rework i have no problems facing Darius. Might take Fervor of Battle to do proper autohit exchanges (keep his passive in mind with the 5 stacks ad buff for him)

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Buy Executioners Calling, free lane then, Block his infectedcleavermissilecast.png Cleavers if he goes for the Last Hit on a Cannon Minion with your rivenfeint.png Shield.

He will stack armor if hes not mentally retarded so go Black Cleaver first or try to roam to other lanes if you think you can't kill him at that point.

VS

Ekko

Medium

This is a quite fun  and even Matchup to play if the Ekko doesn't go tanky runes and cloth armor as start item.

Use your  riventricleave.png wisely and your rivenfeint.png to deny him his 3rd autoattack hit from his passive.
You have most kill pressure on him pre 6 imo, if you both get your ultimates you have to wait in the all in for his ekkoR.png Ultimate before you use Windslash in the best case scenario.

VS

Fiora

Medium

Try to get near walls if she fioradance.png Ults you to deny her heal.

You may go 1-2 Dorans Blade if you think the Fiora is good.
You can rivenfeint.png Shield her fioraq.png Q + Passive procs - maybe even max rivenfeint.png this matchup.
Dont use your third  riventricleave.png Q if she has her fiorariposte.png Riposte up, the animation time is quite long so she will react and cc you for free, don't let that happen.

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Take rivenfeint.pngShield first to shield up his parley.pngParrleys and kill him at lvl 6 with your rivenfengshuiengine.png Ult.

You can max E first in this matchup if you are not confident enough or need to dodge his raisemorale.png Kegs.

VS

Garen

Medium

At level 1, take E and rivenfeint.pngShield his garenslash3.png Q spell.

If he garenslash3.png Qs a minion you can all in him.
Later on he will stack Armor giving you a hard time, so get Black Cleaver asap or consider roaming.

VS

Gnar

Easy

Gnar's autoattack range is quite low on earlier levels so make use of it.
His gnarE.png Jump is on a high cooldown so abuse that and you should win the lane and snowball at earlier levels.

It will only get harder the more time u let pass by since he will go Armor or Frozen Mallet and kite you to death if he plays properly.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Dodge his h28gevolutionturret.pngTurret lasers with your rivenfeint.pngShield,

If you want to combo him you kinda have to all in him like every other ranged champ but if you manage to destroy his h28gevolutionturret.pngTurrets you have a good chance of winning since the hextechmicrorockets.pngW and especially the ch1concussiongrenade.pngE of heimer are dodgable.
If he rushes zhonyas first, beware of him placing an upgrade!!!.pngh28gevolutionturret.png Ult Turret and then the hourglass, ping your jungler back if hes about to gank him since the dmg will be insane.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

If she maxes illaoiE.png E first, you better dodge that with your rivenfeint.png E or she will trade you so hard with no chance to counterplay then. If she predicts your E you are kind of fucked :/

VS

Irelia

Medium

This is my favorite matchup of al league matchups i've ever played.

Riven wins early, Irelia wins Mid and Lategame if you let her farm so you have to deny her as much creeps as possible.
Punish her if she starts ireliagatotsu.pngQ or ireliahitenstyle.pngW first at Level 1, you can trade her and she has no counterplay for that then.

Boxbox goes Steraks Gage as first item, i always stomped the lane so hard that i went hydra and maybe 1-2 dorans after/inbetween cdr boots and the warhammer.

You could also go for a qss as second item if you think that negating the stun will help the most but beware that you will lack in combat stats vs. her then.

Enjoy this skillful matchup!

VS

Jax

Medium

A bit like Irelia a skill dependent Matchup.

A good trick is to do the Q Buffer i mentioned in the Ability Description to pressure him from going onto you.
Another good trick is to never use your rivenfeint.pngShield If he has his jaxcounterstrike.png E and his jaxleapstrike.png Q ready. if you are even with him and he has no trinity force and he used his Q or E and you have all your spells up i would consider trading him.

VS

Katarina

Easy

After Lvl 6 you have to not use your rivenmartyr.png Stun until she deathlotus.png Ults. In all other cases you should win, but remember that she has shunpo and will disengage all the time with it if shes not stupid and want to get torn apart :D

VS

Kennen

Hard

try to rivenfeint.pngShield his kennenbringthelight.pngW and kennenshurikenhurlmissile1.pngQ. Try to farm, you can't do more in most cases unless you see that the kennen doesn't kite you at all. In that case kill him but he will most likely rush zhonyas so be prepared for a kennenshurikenstorm.png Ult Zhonyas combo later on. QSS will work wonders in teamfights against this dude, also tell your team to go QSS if they lack in tanks.

Consider rushing mercury boots.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

His lvl3 is really strong if he plays it well, stay away from bushes in the toplane because of his passive. Consider getting Pink wards if you want to kill him, i think pre 6 you should have the best chances in killing him because he doesn't have his khazixQ.png Q evolved then.

VS

Lee Sin

Medium

This matchup is a bit in Riven's favor. Consider taking 14.pngIgnite and starting rivenfeint.png Shield first to dodge his blindmonkqone.png Q . You should win at lvl 2-3 and from there on but beware of him blindmonkrkick.pngKicking you under his turret or his blindmonkrkick.pngKick blindmonkqone.pngResonating Strike combo in general.

VS

Malphite

Hard

Even if you manage to kill him 1-3 times early, he will just pwn you and your team in mid and lategame and you won't really be able to kill him. Even with Black Cleaver it won't be easy unless he is too behind of course. 4.pngFlashing his ufslash.pngUlt needs practice but is mandatory to fully understand this Matchup.

Its also harder to riventricleave.png Combo him if he has casted his E landslide.png on you, you may get used to that too or dodge his landslide.pngE in time with your rivenfeint.pngShield.

VS

Malzahar

Medium
rivenfeint.pngShield if you see that his alzaharmaleficvisions.png hits you. His passive got nerfed so you don't have to wait that much if you started to trade him. If you 4.pngFlash or rivenfeint.pngDash away from his alzaharcallofthevoid.pngSilence you should win the all in (beware of alzaharnullzone.pngVoidlings tho).

He will push so ask your jungler for ganks.

VS

Maokai

Medium

You should be able to always rivenfeint.pngShield in time his maokaiunstablegrowth.pngEngage. Rush Black Cleaver and hope he will go catalyst first and not Chainwest, then you have good chances to kill him but don't waste your riventricleave.pngQs or Maokai will easily kill you (i love how ppl underestimate the mao dmg at this elo :D)

VS

Nasus

Easy

This is a matchup where Lane control is essential for winning. Watch guides about Lane Freezing for denying his siphoningstrikenew.pngQ stacks and you make him basically useless.

VS

Olaf

Medium

Always keep a spell up for defense, preferably your rivenfeint.pngE or rivenmartyr.pngW to not let him track you down with olafaxethrowcast.pngAxes. They hurt alot if he hits 50%< of them.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Start rivenfeint.pngE and pray that he waste his mana with his pantheon_throw.pngSpears into your shield. Timing is important for this. At level 6 you win if you both are even because pantheon_grandskyfall_jump.pnghis Ult is trash for 1v1ing.

In this matchup its important to realize that you can't get every minion and that it's not worth to go for a minion if you lose half of your health for it.

VS

Poppy

Medium

Always remember that her poppyparagonofdemacia.pngW will only block one of your  riventricleave.pngQ charges and if it blocks your rivenfeint.pngE the shield remains as i remember.

Her early damage and tank stats are a lot, don't underestimate them.

VS

Quinn

Hard

DODGE THE QUEUE!

VS

Renekton

Hard

Go Armor and Health in Yellow and Armor in Blue Runes to survive this hell of a lane.

Don't be ashamed to go Phage into Chainwest or something if you can't handle this, i think most Riven mains will understand you and me xD

Riven needs her rivenfengshuiengine.pngUlt to empower her spells a bit while Renektons Fury empowers his spells MASSIVELY (especially empowered renektonpreexecute.pngW hurts A SHITTON!)

VS

Rengar

Medium

Take riventricleave.png Q at level 1 and go ham on him while he has no Ferocity. If he has 3 or more Fero stacks and he is Lvl3 or higher dont fight him or go near bushes or at least dont use your abilities at all and you will be fine.

Recently ive seen Rengars going Triforce and Exhaust on toplane which is cancer as fuck, thank god he will get a rework.

VS

Rumble

Medium

Rumble shits on Riven in the earlygame but if Riven gets her hands on CDR and a few levels the rumblecarpetbomb.png Rumble Ult will be kinda useless. Hexdrinker first is a good idea if you think he plays well. Damage calculation trough experience is key to winning this Matchup, its kinda like "who cheeses whom first" xD

VS

Ryze

Easy

His runeprison.png Cooldown got nerfed in the latest Rework, it won't reset in any way. His spellflux.pngoverload.pngQ combo is really strong at level 4-5 onwards so level 1-3 should be the time window in your favor i think. He also goes tear first which is an advantage for you.

VS

Shen

Medium

All that i know from this Matchup is that you should rivenfeint.pngE his shenshadowdash.pngE whenever possible and use your rivenmartyr.pngStun while in his shenfeint.pngW so he can't trade you for free. His shenvorpalstar.pngQ empowered autoattacks are quite strong, don't underestimate it and it will be fine, especially at level 6 because his ult is useless in 1v1s. Type in the Chat when shen reaches Lvl 6 so they hopefully dont go ham on the other side of the map!

VS

Singed

Easy

Ignore him if he proxies, just get freefarm and enjoy beeing a farmed Riven in the midgame ;)

VS

Sion

Easy

Use your rivenmartyr.png W ideally if he charges his crypticgaze.pngQ .

Rush Black Cleaver and pray that he builds dmg since he is too klunky in fights and can be outmaneuvered easily as riven.

VS

Swain

Medium

This Matchup is in Swains Favor but not unwinnable. Go rivenfeint.pngShield first against his swainbeam.pngQ to farm Safely. Consider E maxing and rushing Hexdrinker if you have troubles.

VS

Teemo

Hard
Teemos in lower Elos can be quite bad, still you should dodge the queue when you see a teemo on enemy side locked in (especially after you lock in your Riven).
His blindingdart.png Blinding Dart will give you no trading potential whatsoever and his toxicshot.png Toxic Shot will make his trades really strong.

So since he is a ranged Champ and you not, he will just kite you to death.

DODGE THE QUEUE!

VS

Trundle

Medium

you lose level 1 cuz trundleQ.png Chomp OP. In general you win trough decision making here. Try to get Lvl 6 first, that should be the earliest powerspike that would give you most kill pressure on him since his ult makes him hella strong.

VS

Tryndamere

Easy

Take 14.pngIgnite, Dorans Blade and don't let him CS at all. This way he can't build up his fury. Also don't push the lane unnecessary.

VS

Urgot

Medium

Urgots Kit is quite good vs Riven but you should still win the trades if you rivenfeint.pngDash away from his urgotplasmagrenade.pngPoison. Later on he will go Frozen Hearth and if will be a bitch to kill him so the earlier the game the more chance u will have to beat the giant crabgot.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

Go Executioners Calling first.

If he charges his vladimirtidesofblood.pngE you can just rivenfeint.pngDash into that and trade him. Watch out for his Empowered vladimirtransfusion.png Q, it gives him more heal on Champions.

VS

Volibear

Medium

His level 1 is hella weak if he goes volibearw.pngW first, just trade him and get his passive proc ASAP because that shit is really annoying. The more farm u give him the more Armor he will stack so go Black Cleaver or roam if you don't think that you can fight him.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Most Yasuos at your Elo will die several times to you.

If you catch him off guard at any gievn time and there are no minions nearby for him to yasuoE.pngDash on he is basically dead, i mean what can he do? nothing right just yasuoQ.pngQ for 2-3 times which he doesn't max first anyways.
There are some good Yasuos out there who can turn the tides around to be careful then and try to force him into a farm lane and chill under your turret since he will push anyways.

My Gameplan & Combos Back to Top

First of all,

* Riven in Teamfights in a nutshell: *

riven guide 1.png

As you can see in the graphic that i made, Riven is a snowball Champion, means she will get stronger the more Kills she gets so your ideal situation in the early game will be:

You kill your opponent 1v1

Lets say we face a melee opponent at level 1, most of them like a Volibear can't do much then so its highly recommended to trade him with your q and autohits inbetween as soon as you can.

You should also push the lane, i do it like this:
I push the first wave so that i can kill the first melee minion of the second minion wave ASAP.
I don't even lasthit that minion if my opponent is kind of scared, i just run up to him when i see that minion is about to die and then i do the

Level 2 Cheese

So i run straight up into the face of my opponent, reach level 2 and level up my W with my keyboard (with ctrl + w).
Then i combo him and he will lose half his health at least, maybe force them to use their flash or even kill them.
Level advantages are something really important in League of Legends and if you practice that you can win lanes alot of the times by just doing that.

So ideally we got control over the lane now.
At this point, warding when the third creepwave arrives since you will most likely be pushing at that time is a good idea since junglers come around that time.

Consider backing timings and try to push the wave into the enemies turret before you backport to make him either miss minions or use his teleport (in that case he wont be able to help his team with that important summoner spell!).

Remember, 15 minions equal one Kill so just harrass your enemy if you won't miss Last Hits for that.

If you haven't killed your opponent yet then your lvl 6 is maybe going to turn the tides. You can do it similar to the lvl 2 cheese: get lvl 6, use your ult and try to kill the enemy instantly if he is in range.
As a rule of fist, if you manage to kill your opponent before lvl 6 you can get a double kill fairy easy if the jungler decides to gank you if you reach your lvl 6, especially if they are still level 5 or lower.

Now comes the Midgame:
At minute 10-15 you should try to get your toplane turret and then rotate to other lanes, take dragon, try to use your teleport to gank, invade the enemy jungler and get free double buffs :D, dive the midlaner if you are fed enough (one of my favorites but not easy to pull off u need a bit experience for this if the mid is not a shitter) and then take mid turret (which is a important objective, remember midlane is the center of the map) and so on... i hope i could give you guys a few ideas on what you should do on that time BUT:
this only applies if you are fed enough to do that kind of stuff, remember the graphic above!

And for the Lategame:
Riven's Lategame depends on what kind of Teamcomp the enemy has, ideally the less CC and tanks they have the better you will be in Teamfights. I dont recommend splitpushing at this stage since a mistake can cost you the game and you teammates have to understand and play properly (spoiler alert: they wont most of the times).

Play it out smart, bait out abilities, use your E to not get grabbed by a Blitzcrank or something and it will work most of the times. Your Target is always their backline, if you have Flash up and see a good opportunity, dont hesitate, if you can instantly burst their Mid and ADC then you have good chances to win the fight since the enemies will lack in damage. Warding and making picks is also something really important imo.
You may not be able to do this at the beginning and its tricky, but you will learn with enough time for sure =)

* Combos *

To be honest, i dont think that reading about the Riven combos is bringing you anywhere if you are a beginner, i would recommend you watching videos about it, boxbox made a good one here:

Practice Rivens abilities, try to find your own style.
I watched Faker, the shy and Lord Master King replays on Riven and tried to understand their thought process as well as watching what kind of combos they can pull off which helped me a lot.

PRACTICE IS THE KEY! (to carrying)

So a few things i can add here:

You should consider playing bot games if playing vs human opponents seems a bit to difficult for you even though you still have fun while playing her.

Learning how to cancel the Q animation is fairy difficult for beginners, you should start with canceling your autoattacks with your Q's which isn't that hard to pull off since it doesn't require you to move your cursor at all.

If you don't understand how your E can cancel 2 animations at once, try out this combo:
Tiamat -> E -> W -> Q
I hope that understanding with comboing will help u =)

to be continued ....
