Summoner Spells Back to Top

Ignite/TP because your Q is a relatively low CD blink.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Bounty Hunter/Oppressor are interchangeable and personal preference, I use oppressor more often than not really for the extra lane power as bounty hunter won't kick in until the mid-late game.

Precision nerfs have led to me using Intelligence now. Precision is still viable.

Get W to level 3-4 against most matchups you will have top aka bruisers who want to come to you to fight you.

Against ranged max E, if you are stomping lane against a squishier melee top you can also max E for the better poke/zoning.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Core Items

Situational Items

I start with Dorans + pots every game, corrupting potion is an ok start however I can hold off getting Morellos for the mana regen by starting with a Dorans and getting a 2nd one first back. This makes you 120hp less squishy and 2 Dorans has more mana regen than a completed morellos because of the mana on cs passive.

Hextech + Ludens is the absolute core of this build and my personal style of play. Situationally you will need to rush a Seekers Armguard or Abyssal Scepter. You do this if you are against someone you need it for eg a Tryndamere or Kennen, or if the enemy has double AD/double AP in top and mid.

Morellos and Deathcap you will want to build 3rd or 4th after Hextech/Ludens. Typically Deathcap if you are real far ahead, Morellos if you're not and want the CDR for box fields on objectives. Morellos you also may want to consider buying earlier if their team has a lot of sustain.

End item is game dependent. I usually end with one of Zhonyas/Liandries/Void Staff.

Boots are usually made into sorcs in the mid game however in the late game feel free to swap them for a 6th item.

Why not Lich Bane?

Lets say I wanted to buy Lich Bane after my main 2-3 core items, instead of Morellonomicon, for more burst.

+7%ms
+250mana
=AP
-15mp5
-10%cdr
+800g cost

So really all I'm gaining is the passive and the ms effectively, and paying 133% of the cost of Morellos for it. I don't typically have a problem bursting down targets that I want to burst down with this build as is. I think if you're using Lich Bane on AP Shaco you're not abusing your ability to spam this burst rotation of E + Hextech + Ludens = Thunderlords.

It just involves a different playstyle that I personally feel is inferior because of it being less safe for arguably no advantage over my playstyle.

VS

Akali

Hard

tank akali is impossible to beat with shaco

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

I'm an old chogath player and will dodge 90% of his Q's in lane with shaco and still lose. This can be easier if your jungle camps him pre-6, which you should ask him to do because cho is a pretty easy kill if he is at all extended in lane, which they typically are. If you let him farm easily to 6 and don't get a kill you are real screwed because you won't kill him and he will 100-0 you if he catches you. Silence screws you up big time too.

VS

Darius

Easy

Reccomend getting 2 levels in W then maxing E, this lane is all on you to take advantage of before he gets too big for you. When he comes to Q you want to sit next to him so the damage is lower and heal doesn't go off, putting a box down to force him to fight.

Your clone WILL proc his heal and double heal so be careful of that in all in situations. If you dodge his ulti by popping your clone it will not go on cooldown, you are not safe.

Q away to stop him getting his full bleed procs on.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Mundo just got nerfed, this lane can be won pre 6 and after that its a farm lane really and you will struggle to kill him unless he messes up.

VS

Ekko

Medium

Total skill matchup, he wants to outplay you and you want to outplay him. Max E > W to poke him hard while he is still squishy. You have to use your box placement smartly in this matchup.

VS

Fiora

Medium

I put this as medium although really it's quite hard because she is ridiculously easy to play for the power she has and you have to play around her passive in lane and her parry. Walk out of range for her passive to get a better one for you and hug walls/boxes so that if she comes in to pop it she has to take some box damage.

Put 2 levels in W then max E to poke her down while shes squishy.

VS

Gangplank

Hard

This guy will just farm and become a beast later on. I say hard because you will need your jungle to win this matchup and keep yourself useful. His ulti means he has a global presence you can't stop.

Max E because it's stupid hard to get him to walk into boxes.

VS

Garen

Medium

Max W > E. Mostly a farm lane. You have the advantage pre-6 so try and get firstblood, most garen players are stupid and will fight you. In teamfights make sure your adc knows to use boxes for disengage for garen.

VS

Gnar

Medium

If you can kill him pre-6 this is a pretty easy lane, but doing that is hard to do. If not this lane becomes extremely annoying because this champ has all the ranged poke he needs to make you miserable in mini form, and all the tankiness to make you miserable in mega form. You can win the all ins with box traps.

Max E > W if you manage to get an easy early kill so you can turn the harrass around on him but otherwise max W and try to win all ins/stop him from perma pushing you in.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

Since he got nerfed a bunch this is really easy, you can poke the shit out of him with E and stop any all ins from him with W. Max E > W.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

really hard matchup you really can't stop his turrets and once he gets zhonyas hes never dying to you without seriously misplaying. Its hard to even get jg ganks because like you he can 1v2.

Max E > W to try and poke him as best you can and pick up the cannon minions.

VS

Illaoi

Easy

Just dodge her E (the vessel  hook) and she can't do shit. Put 3 levels in W then max E.

VS

Irelia

Medium

Skill matchup that gets much harder for you when she is at 2 items. Once there she will be able to fight through your boxes. Try to win this with a gank.

3 levels in W then max E.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

2-3 in W then max E. You have multiple ways of stopping/escaping his ultimate. Just don't get poked by his Q too hard.

VS

Jax

Easy

As long as you don't fuck up and give him a kill early, this is an easy easy lane. Put 2-3 in W then max E. He won't be able to live through the E harrass until later on when he starts building tanky. Boxes aren't blocked by counterstrike.

VS

Kennen

Easy

Dodge his Q and you can win this by having guaranteed harass in your E. He will hate to build MR first too typically, they all want to rush their zhonyas so you can chunk him. Also an easy one to delete with your hextech + E combo. Max E.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

Skill matchup although she has the upper hand. She is hard to gank with her E too. In lane really her only offensive spell is her Q and she can hit you with it for more damage if you're behind minions.

There is not much as sweet as sending your clone at her post 6 and her ulting the clone so you can delete her.

VS

Lulu

Hard

One of the hardest matchups i can think of, if I see it's lulu top I typically just dodge because it's also incredibly frustrating to play against. She also counters you for her whole team in her shield/ultimate protecting her carries. Don't play this matchup guys.

VS

Malphite

Hard

This can be won in lane but it requires a lot of learning how to do so. He brings what is typically expected from a top laner too, tanky engage. 2x boxes do stop his ultimate and you can dodge it with your ultimate but i would reccomend just trying to Q away, I never seem to be able to pull it off because of his ultimates animation.

Max W > E unless you manage to kill him at level 3 somehow, then you can push an advantge really hard. Otherwise you're very reliant on him fighting in your boxes.

VS

Maokai

Easy

Haven't seen a maokai top in forever though this will be a pretty easy matchup in lane. You can harass through his heals as long as you aren't giving him stacks by putting w down next to him all the time.

VS

Nasus

Medium

The problem with Nasus is that unless you are playing my other favourite top laner (karma) or anyone else who can completely shit him down and counter him in teamfights, you require your entire team to stop him.

With shaco you can kill him at level 2-4 if he messes up and then try to zone him as best  you can but this champion really needs your team to be aware that eventually he is probably going to start pushing down lanes and require 2-3 people to stop.

Max E > W so you can harass him off minons. You can't just sit there  and E him early on though you will need to all in him and hopefully gank him with ur jg over and over.

VS

Olaf

Hard

Ultimate cancels the fear, the lower he gets the stronger he is at fighting you, his axe poke is strong, his lifesteal is strong, your boxes won't stop him getting to your adc later on. He counters you in a lot of ways.

What to max depends on how the game is going. If you magically get a kill early without dying then you can max E and do your best to push him off minions.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Live through his nightmarish first 7 levels while farming decently and you will outscale him in squishy deletion. If you manage to kill him before that via good box placement/all in baiting then you can turn the tables on him and poke HIM out of lane. Odds are he will get his cheese off though  because his Q is just stupid strong early.

What to max depends on how the lane goes. If you can max E and pokle him down do it, if you need to rely on him jumping into boxes to kill him then max W.

VS

Poppy

Medium

Double box traps are your friend. She wants you near walls to slam you into them and you can set boxes down to stop that. She does a lot of damage for how tanky she can be though so be careful.

Like others maxing W or E depends how the lane is going, though you want at least 2 levels in W early.

VS

Quinn

Easy

You can dodge her Q, she can't dodge your E. Max E and chunk her hard.

VS

Rammus

Hard

pure tank that has little outplay potential for shaco. very very hard.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Skill matchup, he can chunk you easily with his combos but he will need to get to you to do that. This is your lane to win pre-6 with good box placements and outplaying.

3-4 levels in W then max E.

VS

Rengar

Easy

Put boxes in the brush and watch him cry.

VS

Riven

Medium

Skill matchup. Probably my favourite matchup. Riven is all mechanics and Shaco is all mindgames. Rivens can be very easy to trick due to this. She does have some advantage though in that her skills are AOE and will kill your boxes accidentally.

VS

Rumble

Easy

Probably the easiest matchup for me, he will eat boxes and daggers for days.

VS

Ryze

Hard

Fuck this guy. Pure aids to play against.

VS

Shen

Medium

I would have put this on hard for the old shen, his Q meant he could harass you for free while sustaining through your harass. Now you have a lot more leeway in lane. Unfortunately it's still shen and his job is still to protect his carries which makes your job much harder. I wouldn't pick shaco into him to be honest. The actual lane isn't as hard anymore though. Max W.

VS

Singed

Medium

you can proxy too once you get some mana regen happening post level 6. this is a hard matchup mostly because you can't really kill him in lane which is good for him getting his win conditions and him getting his.

VS

Sion

Medium

The lane is relatively easy because it will just become a farm lane. You can't stop him and he can't catch you. Teamfights you can slow him down with your boxes and he can protect his carries from you with all his CC.

VS

Tahm Kench

Hard

Walking ball of stats. Using ult doesn't remove the stacks and your clone won't copy your stacks so he will still know which one is the real you. He becomes impossible for you to kill.

VS

Teemo

Medium

hate this rat. If you can get ganks pre-6 though this becomes very easy as he will just become deletion bait for you.

Max E.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

this can go either way, you need to create an advantage early and probably build a morellos early to help fight against his healing. honestly this matchup is easier for AD because you can stop his split/snowball by snowball yourself easier however AD is always a gamble in top.

VS

Vayne

Medium

this stupid shit is hard until you get jungle pressure on her around level 7-11, your priority before then is to wait for ganks and farm as many minions as you can. you might be able to cheese all in her on lvl 3 if she has no combat summoner like exhaust or heal.

VS

Vi

Easy

I've seen it, shes all telegraphed and easy to deal with. Let her get ahead though and she will melt you.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

One of the worst matchups you can have. Dodge.

VS

Volibear

Easy

Very very easy for you because you will have ignite to counter his all in/passive and boxes are his worst enemy. he can fear your boxes though haha. Just don't fight him at all when he has popped his ultimate and you should be fine.

VS

Wukong

Medium

tip: ping him for the red target marker to come up, and if it disappears while hes sitting there, then he has used his clone.

He has a very strong level 2 and 3 but will have to come to you to abuse that, stack your boxes and he will get melted. This all in attempt that every wukong i have ever seen tries to take advantage of is your time to shine and kill him.

2-3 in W then max E.

VS

Xin Zhao

Easy

All telegraphed, outplay him and build a huge advantage where he gets melted by 3-4 of your daggers and cant dive onto you into boxes. Let him get ahead though and you will be guinsoos bait.

VS

Yasuo

Easy

Put boxes in your minion waves etc and you will mess up his plan of looking like a cool dashing samurai only to be killed by a clown. Trick him into all inning the clone. Like riven this is mechanics vs mindgames only yasuo has less aoe bullshit to screw your boxes over. You shouldn't lose this once you get used to yasuo. If you kill yasuo once early, then kill him again, prepare yourself for the feed train because every yasuo i've ever seen gets more and more desperate to carry and outplays themselves.

W > E.

VS

Zed

Medium

Unluckily for zed you have a lot of ways to outplay his kit. A good zed is still a good zed but you both are fulfilling the core same job by going top with these champs, assassination, though he can splitpush and you have objective control/anti dive in your boxes by going AP.

very fun skill matchup, learn to dodge his ult with your own and this becomes easier.

Introduction Back to Top

Hi guys,

I've been playing LoL since march 2011 over that time maining at different points every position in the game and many champs over that time. By season 4 I was getting bored of the game so decided to main Karma top and had a lot of fun. But by the end of that I was tiring of only playing Karma so started looking for something else offmeta to play in top and decided to try Shaco. I'd always liked Shaco since the best player I'd played with early on was an insane Shaco main but i just sucked at jungling on anything that wasn't a utility tank so I decided to try him top.

Following a guide by a guy called 'fugofi' here on lolking I mained AD Shaco top all last season going from silver to high plat. I played AP Shaco occasionally if the matchup demanded it eg Malphite, however i didn't like the playstyle at all. In the preseason though I realised that thunderlords was extremely strong and you could proc it on Shaco with just Ludens, hextech active (which was also buffed) and E.

I've been playing this style of AP Shaco since late 2015 with some solid success. I don't know if anyone other than champs well known for their burst eg Veigar, can match the single target burst you can get with this build, let alone the amount you can spam this burst with Shaco. It only has a 30 second CD on a champ with decent objective control in boxes.

Hope you have fun with it too, thanks for the view.

Pros and Cons of AP Shaco Back to Top

Pros:
- Insane reasonably safe 30 second cd burst
- Strong laning played right
- Very strong mid/lategame objective control with box trap fields
- Great pick potential
- 10/10 teamfight janitor aka you can enter a fight halfway through and totally clean up
- The element of surprise by picking AP Shaco top
- Tilt the enemy off the face of the earth by making them lose to Shaco top and then argue with your team (if you get first blood or a double kill off a gank just type '?' and watch the tilting begin)

Cons:
- No engage or tankiness that typically comes from top so if your team drafts shit you may want to dodge
- Squishy (2 dorans + yellows is decent mid game hp pool though)
- Terrible against a team with 3-4 tanky champs when you have 1 or none

Laning is great as long as you understand how to play top lane as far as trading, ganking, minion management etc is concerned. You can never be surprised by a gank thanks to your boxes, placing a box in brush/river when you can will stop any ganks. Even better, you can totally turn ganks around into your favour ESPECIALLY around level 3-6 by setting up traps, they don't have to be illuminati but that is one of the better traps. remember 2 boxes stacked stops any dash.

Now with the better gunblade and thunderlords, your single target burst is some of the highest in the game. At 20-25 minutes in a typical game your combo will deal; E (210+300) + hextech (150+150) + lludens (120) + thunderlords (150) + q (150) + ignite (210) = 1250~ damage. that is without applying the backstab damage or the resistances.

When to pick AP Shaco? Back to Top

When your team has engage/tankiness, the lane matchup isn't awful and the enemy has 3+ squishy champs. For example, if they have a Ziggs mid/Jinx ADC/Nami supp, this is a great time to pick Shaco. If the jg and/or top are also squishy then even better. Your midgame combo will either outright delete them or at least send them back to base because they're on a low hp.

Shaco tricks Back to Top

- Dodge abilities with your ultimate cast like a zhonyas
- Q in the opposite direction you looked to be going for easy jukes
- Send your clone out from a bush to bait an all in attempt from them and waste skills/summs as well as getting an easy clone explosion proc off
- Use the clone to trick them into think its the real you, this is something you can't do as often as jungle Shaco that you need to do to play him in top efficiently, say you pop ultimate mid fight, move around with the clone as if its the real you and you will trick 4/5 players, leads to some very nasty kills for you
- Pop clone, and do the above to escape if you have to by Qing away when they go after the clone (best used when Q is about to come off cd)
- Stack your boxes 2-3x on eachother to stop any dashes such as Malphite or Jarvan ultimate
- Get to dragon/baron 1 minute before it's being contested or comes up to set up boxes giving your team a lot of objective control
- When pushing a tower with ult, again pretend the clone is the real you letting you get more damage off on the turret and them potentially wasting skills on the clone
- Box management in lane is very important, you either want to control the river side, brush side or have boxes setup behind your minions to bait an all in from them
