Summoner Spells Back to Top

I prefer flash over ghost mainly to get over terrain or dodge a crucial skillshot. Purely preference.

Teleport is pretty meta, it helps with roaming either mid or bot and you can just tele back into lane. Running anything else hinders your ability to be in multiple places at once.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

The life steal helps your passive sustain in lane, double edge helps with winning lanes a bit easier (getting countered is brutal though.)

Tenacity is hard to come by (Mercs being the only item that provides it) so having 15% right off the bat helps incredibly.

Now, undying is meant for winning lane and sustaining, while stone is more about tanking for a team. I prefer undying if I'm laneing against something relatively easy such as Rumble or Teemo and just snowball from there. If it's a Darius or a Riven, take stone, you won't win lane.

Think the rest of what I didn't mention is self-explanatory.

E is your main harass and Q is typically your follow up. This is where the "deal more damage to impaired champions" coupled with your double edge and hybrid runes come into play. If you can land a half charge Q after an E, you'll probably chunk a quarter of their life or more. A full charge Q against someone that is relatively immobile such as a Teemo or Rumble (I love facing rumbles) You'll probably do half, depending on their runes. The glass cannons are the best.

W is hard to use for harass due to the time it takes to pop it. 3 seconds really hurts, so I tend to use this more defensively. If you're looking for burst, you can pop this while your ulting for a bit more burst.

Your ultimate is mainly used as either an initiator or a gank. I like to be a bit unpredictable with it either ganking from behind or the side but time isn't on your side if the other top laner is pushing. Use your best judgement. Ulting down the lane works just as well. If your team doesn't need an initiator or theres a more reliable champion to do it (Such as Vi) then use it to peel.

Your passive is pretty garbo. Just use it to zone away people from fights or just CS with it. Pro tip. Use this to steal the enemy blue/red buff before lane phase begins.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Usual start
Against a hard counter such as Darius

Core Items

You'll achieve 30% CDR with this, deal alot of damage, returning damage and be pretty unkillable. You don't need to build more than 1 MR item since your health usually prevents bursting you. You usually don't need 40% unless you want that 35 second ult timer. other than that, better items.

Situational Items

Does the enemy have little to no CC but alot of AA? Tabi. Do they have plenty of slows but not really AA reliant? Swiftness. CC Galore? Treads.
Any of these items work. Cleaver is okayish, it gives you CDR and health and is a pretty cheap item, along with armor shred. War just puts you in stupid levels of HP. Hydra compliments your health stacking. Locket for an extra shield and MR boost to your team. Heart is my least favorite. CDR mana and armor. You don't really need it imo, but you do you boo boo.

I like Trinity for the fact that I can melt towers relatively quick. Just spam abilities and proc the sheen and watch the tower go bye bye. It also helps your dueling power, along with the CDR. Its just an all around great buy. Downside is that it's expensive. I usually get this 2nd or 3rd depending on the lane.

Every other item that is tank is situational. Use your best judgement. If you think 1 spell deflection matters, get a veil for example. Lot's of Crit? Randuins. Again, best judgement.

When you're building your items, be sure to A. Build against the highest threat/most fed. If you're building MR against an 0/7 Syndra with 30 CS, you're doing it wrong.

VS

Aatrox

Easy

Joke of a champion. Shouldn't be difficult.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

The problem is that he can interrupt you constantly whilst doing a shit ton of damage. Worse, he can sustain if he last hits like a God. More of a farm lane than anything really though if you play it smart.

No one really plays Cho anymore sadly.

VS

Darius

Hard

If he plays like a pussy, easy lane.

If he's a Darius main, spread your cheeks and hope he lets you have a reach around.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Farm lane. He can't kill you, you can't kill him (after 6.) You're better in team fights imo as you can lock down champions with CC whilst Mundo is...Well, Mundo.

VS

Ekko

Medium

You win this lane easily, the issue is killing him. If he's trying to force trades, E him back off a little bit and just charge your Q. He won't be able to do much. Usually Ekko's tend to toss their AoE stun/shield behind you so just side step it right or left. Pretty much the only way to win lane since his speed/stacks and dash make it a bit difficult. other than that, he doesn't do much.

VS

Elise

Hard

%max health, %missing health. She's your nemesis. She's pretty squishy however so if you can abuse this before being poked down, do so.

VS

Fiora

Hard

Fuck this champion. Doesn't matter how much health and armor you build, she'll annihilate you in a few seconds. You're better off picking something else against a Fiora such as a Illaoi or Renekton.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Again, fuck this champion. Whether he's AD or AP, he'll constantly dodge your abilities with impunity. You might be able to get lucky and land an E here or there, but anything beyond that is suicide.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Not the hardest matchup, his oranges and barrels makes him a nuisance. Just try and E+Q combo him. Later on he won't be able to burst you down unless it's crit plank or something insane.

VS

Garen

Easy

Keep your distance and save your E AFTER he starts charging. It's important that you avoid his spin. Garen is a pretty simple and predictable champion, however, if you let him just spin to win you, he'll probably carry the game.

VS

Gnar

Medium

Little tricky at first but just play it passively without him freely stacking you. E+Q him whenever you can. Even if you miss it, his jump is on a much longer CD than your combo.

VS

Hecarim

Easy

I don't see the pony that often anymore but I personally never lost this lane without their jungler interfering. You outdamage him, your sustain is somewhat better if you can last hit, he just can't really take you at any stage of the game.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

Besides being an annoying prick, you can E his turrets and turn his main defense into your own weapon. The troll gets trolled and it's a win win. You can even E his ult+turret away, which is just awesome. Heimer can't really do much against you except try and push the lane. E+Q him whenever.

VS

Illaoi

Hard

I hate this lane. Illaoi is just the anti fun shitter that I never want to see. She does massive amounts of damage and can take a beating like a red-headed step child.

Not the hardest lane, but fuck is she annoying.

VS

Irelia

Medium

There will come a point where she'll destroy your hopes and dreams. Build health early to negate the true damage, a thorn mail and a cape combo wouldn't hurt either. And buy treads for this for her stun. other than that, the moment she gets trinity, the lane gets dumb.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

Kinda like Riven except no AD steroid and can't really dodge your abilities. You can beat him pre six, and assuming you're going even, beat him afterwards. If he gets an early lead, kiss your lane goodbye.

VS

Jax

Medium

E+Q him, you can interrupt his jump with your half charge Q (though the damage will still be applied to you.) Just keep kitting him. Jax excels in prolonged duels.

VS

Jayce

Easy

Your range is about the same as his, except he usually builds AD and is squishy while you're tanky and still do a shit ton. Pretty easy lane imo.

VS

Kayle

Medium

Another champion that, eventually, will destroy your hopes and dreams. She can be pretty easy early in the lane, she'll more than likely run out mana just trying to sustain herself in lane. Her ult is somewhat negated by you thanks to your CC.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Kinda like Gnar, this is a tricky lane. Back off if you have two stacks on yourself, no point in taking a stun and more harass. Be patient and make smart trades.

VS

Lissandra

Easy

Build some early MR and she'll never kill you,

VS

Malphite

Easy

Harass him early, Malphite has incredibly poor stats early. Just keep abusing your E+Q. At no point do I believe he can't kill you alone.

VS

Maokai

Hard

%health, sustain with ability spam from you or him, reduced damage, does more to you. While it's a hard lane, it's winnable,

VS

Nasus

Easy

Another champion that will crush your hopes and dreams eventually. The good news is, he's more kiteable (somewhat, wither is broken.) Abuse his poor early game and hopefully you can win the game before he reaches God mode.

VS

Olaf

Hard

His undertow spam is what makes this lane difficult to no end. Coupled with his insane sustain, there won't be a time that you can kill him on your own unless he really fucks up.

VS

Pantheon

Easy

Bit bursty at first, but after your first item he shouldn't be an issue. Avoid his level 2/3 cheese

VS

Poppy

Medium

Somewhat difficult for the inexperience. Just play patiently, and keep E+Qing. Avoid the all in and just kite her.

VS

Quinn

Medium

Quinn is the bane of most top laners. Fortunately for you, you have range. You'll know she's shit when she wastes her only dash on you for harass.

VS

Renekton

Easy

Gone are the days of the Top Lane King. The poor gator can't do much against you unless he wants to double dash. Build some armor early and you'll be riding the freelo train.

VS

Riven

Hard

Don't pick Sion.

VS

Rumble

Easy

My favorite lane. You shit on him at every stage of the game except levels 1 and 2. E and fully charge your Q and just watch him panic.

VS

Ryze

Medium

He out damages you rather hard. Just try kiting him and avoid his all ins. He can't spam Rune Prison anymore, thankfully.

VS

Shen

Hard

Shen is ridiculous. His Q does % health, and the sword hits you traveling to him, his AA's just hurt more. He's incredibly difficult to play against and I highly recommend that you pick someone else.

VS

Singed

Medium

Kite him, about all you can do really. If he flings you he'll just spam laugh as you try and escape or fight him. He's killable though since just about every Singed just fucks up regularly. Not that it matters cause it's Singed.

VS

Swain

Medium

He'll outscale you mid and late game in terms of sheer damage and sustain. Try and abuse the early game as best as possible.

VS

Teemo

Easy

Annoying little rat. But you outdamge him from level 3 and beyond. If he gets a mallet you're forced to all in him however.

VS

Trundle

Hard

He makes you squishy as shit.

VS

Tryndamere

Hard

Pretty difficult, it's hard to kite a tryn with Ghost6.png and his W. I wouldn't recommend picking Sion into Tryn unless you're sure that your ganking ability is faster than his push.

VS

Vayne

Hard

It's a rarity but it's there. She can tumble out of your abilities. Much like fizz, just use shout and avoid anything beyond that.

VS

Wukong

Medium

Has the highest burst at 3, but once you get your first item, he won't be too difficult. The reason why he still does a moderate amount of damage is thanks to his Q, which naturally shreds armor.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

I hate Yasou tops. Not that the matchup is difficult (It is for Sion.) But the fact that they take a squishy champ top lane with a not-so-great early game and hope for the best is dumb.

Anywho. Avoid fighting him in lane (Easier said than done,) his strength comes from dashing in and out of your abilities in lane. once that is taken from him, he's a push over.

Why Sion? Back to Top

Does your team lack an initiator/tank/a badass? Pick Sion! Sion's strength comes from A. Being an incredibly tanky champion thanks to his health stacking and B. The amount of CC he dishes out if left uncheck.

Pick him if you want to put some hair on your chest and nuts.

All jokes aside, I love playing Sion, to the point where I spent a good portion of the day trying to get Mastery 7. I believe I've played him since his rework and haven't stopped much.

Sion is a force to be reckoned with in the right hands, and if you can dominate the early game, chances are you can carry it and win.

Eventually, some of the "Hard" matchups I listed will become gradually easier. Lanes that usually don't get easier will be Darius (And Illaoi for me personally, I struggle against her.)

All in all, he's a solid pick for just about any team comp.

Sion can also jungle as well, though I wouldn't recommend it since he has a relatively slow clear and sub-par ganks pre 6.

When not to pick Sion. Back to Top

Take a gander at your team comp if you're last pick. If you have 2/3 tanks that lack damage, then you're better off picking something that can reliably kill an ADC/Primary target. Renekton, Irelia, Jax for example.

The biggest weakness to Sion is that while his damage is brutal, it comes from his casting, mainly his E+Q combo. He's not the best AAer due to a somewhat slow animation, making him a sub-par or even a weak duelist in comparison to champions such as Fiora and Trynd. Be mindful of that both in lane and in team fights.
