Summoner Spells Back to Top

You're a jungler, summoner spells are pretty easy get these. I guess you could try ghost instead of flash but this is what I'd recommend.

Masteries Back to Top

Strength of ages is the best for junglers as it gives you a few hundred gold in useful stats, and it gives you more jungle sustain after it's all the way stacked. I split up the other 12 just because getting runic affinity helps you keep your jungle buffs longer, and expose weakness helps your team do more damage as you are doing damage to a lot of people, just not all that much damage.

skarnerpassive.png These create a cool minigame that most people aren't used to playing with. Make sure to capture these as they give you a lot of stats, mana sustain, damage all good stuff. It helps you control the buffs and dragon and rift and baron. You can do some mind games with it and steal buffs without taking the spires, but otherwise just take them as it will help you win 1v1s if someone shows up. This is how you clear the jungle really quickly and have no issue with mana. They are great.
skarnervirulentslash.png Your Q is your main source of damage, it's very spammable and on a low mana cost so in the jungle by all means spam away, especially in your Circles. The cooldown goes down some when you autoattack so throw out lots of those even if they don't do much damage. Max first for all the damage possible.
skarnerexoskeleton.png The nice part of this shield is that it's a percent health shield. So it scales really well into late game. Use this as much as you can in the jungle and in teamfights it makes you even harder to kill. Great ability max second.
skarnerfracture.png This is your ganking ability. Get it at level 3 and then you can gank, not great ganks (that comes later) but solid ganks. And remember that a gank doesn't have to get a kill to be successful, ganking an overagressive lane is good just because it makes them play more passively and helps relieve some pressure for your laner. With this make sure to auto attack them after hitting them or else you don't get the stun. It is a ridiculously slow skill shot but at low elo people are dumb and let it hit them anyway most of the time.
skarnerimpale.png This little baby is why you pick Skarner. He's got good clears with all the other stuff but this lets you grab someone and pull them into your team. Use it on whichever squishy is more fed, usually the ADC or Mid laner, but could be the Top or jungler too. Your team does have to be the one to do the damage but most are smart enough to kill the ADC when you grab him and lay him out on a plate for your team. Once you get it at 6 use it basically off cooldown to gank lanes then use it to start teamfights by killing off their main damage dealer at the beginning of the fight.

Starting Items

The recommended goes for the refillable pot, but you really don't need the hunters potion, skarner has almost perfect sustain in the jungle after first clear and a pretty easy first clear with his w and the sustain from the jungle item. No use waiting on the hunters potion although it's a good item on some junglers.

Core Items

These are your two choices. One gives you more vision control which is nice, but your team probably won't make that good use of it. I'd recommend the slowing smite as that helps you get on top of people and once you do that you have a stun, and a suppress to hold them down but getting to them can be tricky.
Even after the nerfs I like this item as it gives you pressure on side lanes, try to put it in a lane you aren't pushing and then leave it to push that lane while you push somewhere else. Hopefully they ignore it and you get a turret or two for free. It now shows you the range when you place it so keep that in mind if you want it to go through 2 turrets it has to be in range.
Same type of thing with ZZ good side lane pressure
All good choices depending on the game. It depends on the situation what you get first, and which ones you get.
If they have a lot of AD especially autoattackers this is good at making it harder for them to kill you. Especially good against a lot of adcs now who don't build lifesteal as commonly. They just kill themselves trying to kill you! :)
All could be valid depending on the matchup. Merc Treads is good against hard CC it does make a difference. Ninja tabi against hard ad. Mobies and swifities are good for map mobility and getting onto people so I usually go with those unless I'm scared of someone fed or something.
very good item on him as you spam your q and it lets you get some soft cc

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

Getting to 6 is a priority. So hard farm the jungle as fast as you can. That being said don't ignore your lanes. If someone is struggling or there's an easy gank by all means go for it. your ganks are so so early so it's better if they have some cc to help you out landing your stun. Once you get 6 gank every time it's up and get someone fed.

If someone is falling behind and starts feeding your first instinct is to help them. This is wrong however, they should play safe but if they are 2 or 3 kills down even when you come in to gank the enemy lane might be able to kill both of you, helping no one. Get your other lanes ahead and as fed as possible, get drags, rift etc as you have good control over them. Try to be nice about it though as you need them not to feed more or afk. But pouring all your resources into a losing lane will lose you the game. You want to snowball your lead to win.

Once you get to teamfights your ult is to take out their main damage dealer. Use it to start a fight so then they have to fight 4v5 or let you push and take objectives.

If you do go ZZ or banner remember to play around them. Put them in the side lanes and then push mid so they are forced to fight you 4v5 or give up an objective somewhere.
