Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png is always taken on Sona support to used to disengage from team fight or engage using 4.png + Crescendo.
You want to be running 4.png14.png against teamcomps with little to no dive-threat or heals like 16.png267.png 40.pngbut its really useful in teamfights.
And you can use 3.png4.png for slow  any enemy against teamcomps with heavy divethreats (such as 10.png266.png157.png,238.png114.png etc.) or vs. a high pressure bot (like if you're playing 37.png22.png vs. 412.png51.png).

New Runes Back to Top

Summon%20Aerie.png?width=32 is the best Keystone that Sona will ever have. It procs from your Q and W and even Autoattacks with Frostfang and just feels amazing to play with. Manaflow Band lets you spam more spells throughout the game and fixes many of your mana problems. Transcendence is good for when you get many CDR items later on in the game and provides you with insane amounts of free AP, whilst Waterwalking boosts your AP for free from your E throughout the game. Really solid Sona setup.

Your last 2 rune slots should be spent in Domination. Zombie Ward is really solid to keep high vision uptime on the map in general, but it's Ingenious Hunter that you're really after. 40% Active Item CDR is legit crazy, and with 3107.png3222.png etc. on a really short CD you're such a strong lategame support it's actually crazy. By far the best Sona setup right now.

Masteries Back to Top

Sonas' mastery page is identical to Nami, as they are both supports that rely on their heals to remain useful. Therefore Windspeaker's Blessing is the optimal Keystone for Sona, putting your last 12 points in the Resolve tree for a lower flash CD that can help you engage with your sonar.png or survive.

Sona is a champion that has a lot of pressure during the early stages of the game, and then falls off a bit after her first item until late game again where she is the queen of spamming abilities. Your ultimate is obviously maxed whenever possible (levels 6,11 and 16). Q max is favoured over W max because it increases it's damage and spammability a lot, something that will help you win a lot of lanes. Remember that your sonaq.png gives your allies a buff on their first auto as well, so make sure if there are multiple allies around to cover them all for extra damage output. Also remember that if you want some extra burst damage from your passive sonapassive.png, going for the 3rd stack Q->Auto does insane damage. Your sonaw.png is maxed second because of it's added healing and usefulness in the mid/lategame. Not much to say about this ability apart from the fact that DON'T underestimate the damage reduction your W sonapassive.png autoattack does to the enemies (25% and scaling with AP for 3sec). Try to bunch with your teammates for this aura as well, as it gives them a shield together with the healing.

Your E, sonae.png, is maxed last because it's the spell that gives the least being maxed in Sonas' kit. Even though it's super nice once you have a few points in it, there's no scenario where you want to put a point in it before level 7 as it's just a big mana dump. A good Sona player knows the usefullness of your Power Chord sonae.png+autoattack however, as it leaves a devastating 40% slow for 2seconds that scales with AP.

    Your CORE 4 items+boots

Situational Items

You always start with Spellthief's and 3 potions; you should never go for Coin as then you completely ruin Sonas' strong laningphase. After your first base you optimally want to get a 3098.pngand 2049.png to ward up the botside of the map and increase your lane pressure. After that you want to complete your 2301.png and 1001.png (NOTE: not any upgraded version, Sona is fine staying on boots1 for most of the game because of her E)

This is when the juicy part of Sonas' build begins. According to me, she has one of the most varying buildpaths in the game, and it's up to your judgement as a player to understand when and why you should build different things. In a standard game where there's not a lot of actions, and you have an ADC+one member on your team that can benefit from the item, I would go 3504.png. Personally I think this is the most broken item on Sona because it gives her everything she wants; more buffs to her team (a broken one at that), mana regen and AP to help her scalings. However my first item if the enemies have a big CC spell such as the Ashe enchantedcrystalarrow.png would be a 3222.png to protect my carries even more. The standard item to go for if neither Ardent or Mikael requirements is the 3107.png. All around very solid item that you can never go wrong with. After that you should always go for 3190.png for the sweet Redemption+Locket combo that makes you an insanely high presence teamfight support, through all sort of comps the enemy team has. Throughout any of these items, if you feel like it complete your tier 2 boots, but it's not really necessary as you get higher level with Sona and can spam your E. In some situations it's a possibility to go for an item such as 3174.png if you're heavily snowballing after your purchase of Ardent Censor, and get 30% CDR really quickly. I would avoid doing this though unless you're an experienced Sona player as this item is really reliant on you outputting damage in order for you to make use of it. Stick with the core items I mention in the list above every game and you are always good to go.

VS

Alistar

Medium

This video is basically you trying to poke him down without being in danger of being all-inned by Alistar and his jungle assistance. If you have no intel on where the enemy jungle is, only use your sonaq.png to poke and play it more safe. If you know there's no way you can get ganked play more aggro with your autoattacks, and if he combos you only (not you and your ADC both) you should win the trade with your added shield from sonaw.png. In mid/late make sure you don't waste your ult on him if his ferocioushowl.png as it cleanses him from your CC.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

Much like the Alistar matchup, it's a good matchup for Sona if you are sure the enemy jungle won't pressure bot 24/7. Incase the enemy jungler sits bot and your jungler doesn't, Blitzcrank can abuse his heavy engage and you as a poor Sona can't do a lot. Try to just respect his engage range with overdrive.pngpowerfist.pngrocketgrab.png and 4.png and you should be fine. In mid/lategame value your survival higher than getting damage on him, it's more important that you can reliably cast spells than to get poke on him.

VS

Braum

Medium

This matchup is really dependant on how many of his braumq.pngs you can dodge. If you can reliably avoid getting hit by his Q from medium/short range, you have a lot of pressure in this matchup. If he hits a Q on you and starts chasing however, you have to turn tail and just run. Always respect his braume.png being able to block your sonar.png in mid/lategame as it's a big way he can make this matchup favourable for him. Much like the Blitzcrank matchup, value your survival over getting extra damage on him by standing far back in mid/lategame.

VS

Janna

Easy

One of the easiest matchups for Sona in the game. You're basically a Janna with trading potential and more CC. Only thing that Janna has that Sona hasn't is better peel for her teammates, but Sona makes up for that with her sonae.png and sonaw.png AoE team buffs in mid/lategame. All you do in this lane is spam your sonaq.png on her and her ADC throughout the lane, whoever she doesn't shield you can use your passive+auto on for extra damage. Make sure you don't run yourself oom however as it can be detrimental in this matchup. If possible always save your sonar.png until she has used her reapthewhirlwind.png, as it's a free interrupt on her most powerful spell.

VS

Karma

Easy

This lane depends a bit more on the choice of ADCs on your and her team. If Karma has a pushing ADC and you don't, this lane is quite tricky as they have free harass under your tower. Try to make sure you have a pushing ADC if playing against Karma as it will make your lane quite easy. Much like the Janna matchup, in an isolated world Sona does slightly lower poke damage than Karma, but it's not a skillshot and she also has her sonaw.png to heal her up afterwards. Focus on surviving lane, don't go oom unless necessary and scale up and you will match/outmatch Karma's utility and have extra CC.

VS

Lulu

Medium

This matchup can be very tricky for Sona in the earlygame, as Lulu has lower CDs than you with higher damage+more effective CC. Try your best to go even or slightly behind in lane, and then get items and match her utility in mid/lategame. This can be done by poking from range with your sonaq.png only, not taking close-range trades with your autoattacks vs. Lulu as she has stronger autoattacks+she can land her luluq.png way easier. Focus on being a utility support with only Q poke, don't try to play super aggressive in this matchup.

VS

Nami

Medium

This lane is a lot like the Lulu lane, apart from the fact that Nami has slightly more reliable laningphase with more heals instead of damage. Focus on matching her pressure from her namiw.png with your sonaq.png and autoattacks. Make sure to not overextend if enemy jungle could be in bot however as Nami has a really easy time setting up bubbles on you as Sona with an namie.png empowered auto attack->namiq.png. Play this like the Lulu matchup if the jungle could be bot with Q spam and focus on scaling up.

VS

Tahm Kench

Easy

Extremely easy matchup for Sona. Perma poke him, dodge as many tahmkenchq.png and focus on getting vision with your jungler in botside to keep Tahm Kench in the 2v2 matchup. The only way out for Tahm Kench in this matchup is to get jungle pressure after you overextend and try to get a stun/eat on you unsuspectingly. Never take all-in trades, just poke him down permanently until he has to go back to base. If you get first tower and rotate for the next one, keep in mind that Tahm Kench can tahmkenchnewr.png behind you with his ADC/Jungler, and you're a squishy Sona that gets oneshot. Focus on poking, scaling and outplaying the Tahm Kench and this matchup is laughably easy.

VS

Thresh

Hard

This matchup is basically the bane of Sona. If you go in poke range with an autoattack EVER vs. Thresh, you are in danger of either getting threshe.png or threshq.png. The only way out of this matchup is to lose pressure bot and just spamming your sonaq.png on CD and giving up a lot of pressure by not using your autoattacks if he has cooldowns up. Focus on getting your items and being a spam utility bot rather than a poke pressure support; otherwise Thresh has an easy time of getting picks on you throughout the game.

VS

Zyra

Hard

Quite a hard matchup because you can't match her poke damage in earlygame, or have enough heals to counteract her poke. She also has really good all-in potential with her zyrae.png throughout the game, which you have to be careful for. Try your best, much like in the Thresh matchup, to just outrange her and spam sonaq.png forever and never go in for autoattack trades. Play for utility and supporting rather than poking and pressuring and you can survive this matchup.

ADCs that synergize with Sona Back to Top

TIER22.png222.png96.png67.png110.png51.png

These champions synergize really well with Sona due to their high basic attack damage that makes you able to buy Ardent Censor as first item and buff them to insane damage outputs. Combined with a CC spell (apart from Kog) they can use after your ult, these ADCs are the best pairings with Sona in the botlane.

2 TIER+ Rest:236.png81.png29.png

These ADCs and the rest not mentioned have much worse push than the Tier1 ADCs that makes Sona's poke less rewarding, they also lack any form of CC to synergize with Sona after using her Crescendo. Even though they aren't Tier 1, they work fine with Sona after she gets Ardent Censor anyway due to their high basic attack damage.

How to play Sona in different stages of the game Back to Top

Earlygame:

Sonas' job in the earlygame is mostly to use your Q+autoattacks for poke and sustain any damage you take with your W. If in a hard matchup however, make sure you don't put yourself in risky situations with your autos and just go for Q harass. Don't underestimate your damage, as a Q+auto+ignite does around 50% of anyones hp in earlygame.

Midgame:

Your job in midgame as Sona is to get your core items as fast as possible and start spamming spells effectively. Once you get the combo of Ardent Censor+Redemption+Locket you're presence in a teamfight is insanely high. Don't go for risky 4.pngsonar.png plays unless a REALLY good opportunity arises, as your survival is much more worth than most enemies (you being able to buff/sustain your allies is better than trading a kill for kill). Make sure you utilize your sonae.png when rotating/engaging/disengage, and try to get your auras on as many teammates as possible.

Lategame:

In the lategame your job doesn't change much from midgame, but you can spam your spells a bit harder with more mana regen and CDR. Always be aware of your mana levels as it's one of the most important things you have to keep in mind when playing Sona. Most of the time you have low CD's, but your mana pool/mana regen is the only limiting factor. Value your W and E higher than Q in the lategame as the damage becomes quite negligible, you are always a straight up utility bot in the lategame.

The only Sona combos there are Back to Top

Quick trade combo: Auto->sonaq.png->Auto (sonapassive.png

This looks like a straight up garbage and normal combo right? But what's important is that you can reset your auto timer with your Passive. Have 2 stacks of your passive, use auto, follow it with your Q and auto straight again after for a REALLY quick burst of damage. Any good Sona player will do this and not waste their passive with a normal Q->Auto combo.

INSANE ENGAGE COMBO: 4.png->sonar.png

Yep, that's it. That's the only engage combo Sona can do.
