Summoner Spells Back to Top

Flash

Like most champions, flash is essential! This spell comes in handy for both passive and aggressive scenarios.
Flash comes in great use with Sona's ultimate, making it an easy and strong way to angle/hit your enemies.
keep in mind before flashing, land your ult on as many enemies while in a healthy position!
(More In detailed in Abilities)

Ignite

The win rate having Ignite on supports is higher compared to Exhaust, since sustain is very easy to obtain via runes while it countering utility healing supports and the summoner heal. the true damage also helps too~ :3
This is more of an Aggressive play style.

Exhaust

Applying slows and reduce damage can help turn over bad trades into a win. It also works well with Sona's W power chord to reduce even more damage! Don't underestimate how much damage Exhaust can reduce!

Heal

Heal on utility supports isn't very popular as it's more a preference with your  ADC, who would  then take  Barrier/Clense/Ignite. These Spells along with heal is very defensive (besides Adc having Ignite) and will help against harsh team comps.

New Runes Back to Top

Low Ult CDR / Assist Sustain

Summon Aery is proc-able with each of Sona's auras, if there are more than two allies within your aura Aery will porc to the closest one near you (Keep this in mind when Leashing the Jungler).
Using Aery for damage can be a little frustrating in lane while your ally is in your aura
When you're doing Drake early, do not spam your abilities for your Passive. Keep close with your ally/'s so that Aery's cooldown is lower, proc'ing her with each Aura Ability (Q,W,E)
Aery will also proc Athene's Unholy Grail and Ardent Censer

The Ultimate Hat along with Presence Of Mind and Coup De Grace Synergise very well together. For each Assist/kill you'll receive 20% of your max mana, 10% off your Ult cooldown and 15 AP for 10 seconds.
Ultimate  Hat CDR% stacks after normal CDR. 40% + 15% at lvl 2 Ult = 61 Seconds - lvl 3 Ult = 51 seconds.
As your receive assists/kills your ult will be much lower~
Coup De Grace gives more damage when the enemy is under 40% hp but is  hardly ever noticeable, however  15 ap for 10 seconds after a assist/kill applies  to everything on Sona's Kit (Amplifying Tone gives 20 AP for 435 gold)
More attack speed is nice ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Transcendence Gives  20 AP after 40% CDR. getting 40% isn't very hard since  almost  every item  gives  Cooldown.
After lvl 10 you'll receive 10% CDR. Sona's Kit is  very dependent on cooldowns so this works very well!
Taking the Blue buff after Max CDR will give you 20 AP

Sona's kit is stronger with more AP, Sona is late game, Gathering Storm gives more you more AP every 10 Mintues!
Longer the game, the stronger you are~

Ability Levelling

These two are the most you'll be using for pretty much every game (depending on play style)

Getting E at Level 4: Sona's E at lvl one doesn't give that much movement for it to be decent over having more stats on Sona's Q/W. the Jungler doesn't gank bot early most game since they start bot and go up.

First Ability Line: Sona's early game is very squishy and weak, some match ups you'll be unable to poke with your Q and auto attack. Sona's W lvl 1 doesn't  have the greatest stats while it using a lot of mana. Levelling W to 3 will help Sona sustain in lane while keeping the ADC alive. This is  best when an enemy bot lane deals a lot  of damage. After Sona's is level 6, W healing and shielding will have  solid stats,  since  lane phase would normally end soon levelling W will come less relevant  and Maxing Q will be more useful. you can still max W if that's your play style, Sometimes  it can be useful if Sona has lost lane hard.

One of the main reasons why I level W in lane is when versing tanks, majority of the time you wont deal any damage to them, and if your ADC get's caught you'll be able to sustain (Exhaust Works well here). Mage Suppots with ADC's will do ''tons'' of damage so maxing W in lane only will help~
However if you're more of an Aggressive (I like damage) Sona or versing Utility Supports, the Levelling line below will work too!

down.jpg

The Second Ability Line is maxing Q before W. You wont have much sustain but you'll do much more damage, thus Ignite would be more reliable over Exhaust. When versing healing supports using ignite on the enemy ADC will reduce all healing by 50%, making the healing support and the healing spell worse. Applying more damage with a stronger level Q will help kill the enemy bot lane!

Abilites

sonapassive.png Power Chord

AURA: Sona's basic abilities each generate a unique aura for 3 seconds that empowers her and all allied champions who enter its radius, also incurring a 0.5 seconds period during which she cannot cast her other basic abilities.

POWER CHORD: After casting 3 basic abilities, Sona's next basic attack deals 20 - 240 (based on level) (+ 20% AP) bonus magic damage, with an additional effect depending on the last basic ability cast.

Q Empowered Auto Attack- Staccato: This pretty much gives you more damage (duh),  Use this for when you need to do more damage

W Empowered Auto Attack - Diminuendo: Reduces the targets damage by 25% for 3 seconds (with no AP). Many Sona players tend to over use Staccato and  forget how useful / how to use  Diminuendo correctly.
Lets put it this way,  in 3 seconds an ADC can  auto you 3-5 times (Dis including abilities),  the ADC does  100 Damage, that's almost  an entire auto attack migrated. Generally when 2v2ing in lane you'll lose  the fight since  Sona is one of the weakest supports  early game. If  you or your adc gets caught, using Diminuendo  on the enemy ADC is very effective,  using  Exhaust along with will reduce the ADC's damage by 25% + 45% (not = 65% it's multiplicative). 100 damage with Exhaust = 45 damage. If you're with an adc who knows this, getting pulled by a Blitzcrank then using Diminuendo and Exhaust on the adc can easily turn the trade for a win. and you might be able to save your Flash.

E Empowered Auto Attack - Tempo: Slows the target by 40% for 2 seconds (with no AP) This is very useful for gap closing, kiting or trying to escape. Diminuendo can be more effective at times than Tempo depending on the scenario, keep that in mind~!

Staccato is the only Empowered auto that will effect Towers, Drake, Rift Herald and Baron.  If the Enemy team has Rift all Empowered autos apply, besides it's Rift's true Damage.

Sona has an auto attack animation reset with her passive. When Sona has 2 Passive stacks, you're able to auto attack > Q,W or E > Empowered Auto attack right after
This can also proc the rune Electrocute.
Extra auto attack can deal more damage to champions, tower and wards. if it's a trinket ward it's possible to kill it with the Auto reset! :3
If you're going towards an enemy tower make sure you Q before getting there, you can use Empowered auto on the tower, rotate abilities then use Staccato again.  Sometimes you may have W/E Empowered auto, Float to the tower, then Q > Staccato Power Chord. Since not Q'ing earlier, Q will be on cooldown, where as you could have Staccato > E,W,Q > Staccato. (Using 2 Power Chords Quickly)

Helping your ADC last hit under tower when having your Power Chord is very frustrating, if you plan to recall after clearing a wave you can time your Auto to hit a minion while not getting the last hit, thus losing your Power Chord, Do not do this if you plan to stay, you'll waste mana to gain another Power Chord.
Auto attack ranged minions once followed by a tower hit will allow to last hit.

Shown here:

In game example:

 sonaq.pngHymn of Valor

ACTIVE: Sona sends out two bolts of sound that deal magic damage to the nearest enemies, prioritizing champions.
AURA: Sona and tagged allied champions deal bonus magic damage on their next basic attack within 3 seconds.

Sometimes in lane phase using your Q to poke the enemies with both bolts might kill a minion, yes your adc will be annoyed, yes you'll be pinged when it happens more than once, it's a drawback to Q for Support gold with Spell Theifs Edge or trying to do damage, try your best to look at minions hp before pressing Q. On first wave it's very easy to last melee minions so wait till your adc has killed them.

When you're alone and trying to CS, remember you can last hit 3 minions at once with  Q an empowered auto when minions are low. If a minion is low and Power Chord is up, use it on the healthiest minion, so 150 damage isn't wasted on a minion that has 30 hp.
Having Q level 1-2 against Ranged minions under tower followed by a tower shot will allow to last hit with an Auto.

One of the strongest parts of Sona's Q is her range (825). Most Sona's players do not take advantage of the full range.  This is a great area to improve on becoming better a Sona player
This is why Leona isn't a hard counter to Sona, Leona's range on her Lunge (E) is 875 but has travel and channelling  time . Sona can Q Leona instantly while able to walk away, thus the distance for Leona to land her E is more challenging since it has travelling time.
Same goes for Caitlyn, Nami and Soraka. Nami's W (range 725), Soraka's Q (range 800)  and  Caitlyn's Auto attack (Range 650) Are all under of Sona's Q Range
Utilising Sona's range to certain champions will give you the upper hand, slashing mana issuers, allowing to poke more damage to the enemies while W'ing less.

Sona's Melody Passive isn't very strong early game when trading with auto attacks, That's  why it's best to just Max Range Q, unless you're able to poke with  autos without getting poked back,go ahead! Sona's Auto range is  550, almost any champion will be able to poke back with higher numbers, receiving less damage and using lesser mana.  E.g If Nami can land her W for Damage and Heal she'll out trade you when using both Q and W. Utilizing Max range Q will prove useful.

sonaw.pngAria of Perseverance

ACTIVE: Sona heals herself and the most wounded nearby allied champion.
AURA: Sona and tagged allied champions receive a shield lasting up to 1.5 seconds.

Sona's W is very costly being 80 / 85 / 90 / 95 / 100 mana, W early level has low healing and shielding stats, relying on W to sustain in lane will cause many mana issues. Hence utilizing Max Range Q is beneficial. It isn't a necessary  need to spam heal when the Adc is low. It's Instinctive nature when injured to play more passively. The Adc will back off and farm until his health has increased, saving you alot of mana!
Unless you're really low in health, don't spam W for only the heal, you'll save a lot of resources if you utilizise Both healing and sheilding.

After W is level 3 the shield stats become higher than the healing stats

sonae.pngSong of Celerity

ACTIVE: Sona gains bonus movement speed for 3 seconds, extended to up to 7 seconds if she doesn't take damage.
AURA: Tagged allied champions gain bonus movement speed for 3 seconds.

Normally used for engaging, gap closing, fleeing.

Late game E is the lowest mana cost ability and is nice to proc with your ADC if you have Aery and Ardent Censer.
When walking back to lane and roaming to ward make sure you use E. Early game this can save a few seconds, sometimes can be enough to help a dying ally.

sonar.pngCrescendo

PASSIVE: Reduces the base Cooldown reduction icon cooldown of Sona's basic abilities.
ACTIVE: After a 0.2-second delay, Sona plays an irresistible chord in the target direction, dealing magic damage to all enemy champions struck and Stun icon stunning them for 1.5 seconds.

More CDR to your basic abilities are nice, not much needs explaining.

To land a nice ult it's very important to have good positioning. Another way you can land a good ult is flash ulting. Players generally don't group in a straight vertical line when versing Sona in case of a flash ult, It's very predictable , instead they group more horizontally, flashing to the side then ulting will give better accuracy and  angles, while keeping safe
Crescendo is better follow up tool, rather than an engage. Try not to stack CC (stunning over another stun or snare).

Flash Ult Example 1:

Flash ult Example 2:

Flash ult Example 3:

Tip: Sona's ult has a channelling time, which means you cant move for that time period, however you can still flash when channelling which can help in gaining distance from enemies.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

100% of the games I take Faerie Charm over pots since personally I never have Hp Issues. knowing the limitations and positioning helps in lane. Faerie gives 30 mana per minute, recalling teir 2 sup item cost 375gold. Thus I can buy 2 more Faerie (60 mana extra per Minute) or Boots.
This item is dependent on play style, I don't use it but it's good when you're versing lanes were you can't proc SpellThief's (Mage supports)
I only get this when playing againts Fiddle sticks, if you're in any range of his birds you lose alot of hp. "owwie". you'll have more mana to spam w, making it easier to sustain in lane
Boots of Mobility help alot with roaming, Poking with Q, warding, rotating and synergy with E. Ninja Tabi is usefull if the enemy team is all ad, or if they have Draven.....
Never upgrade this item to Eye of the Watchers. 900Gold for 200 hp, 10ap, 1 extra ward slot and lose 25% mana regain. It's never cost efficient and will put you behind
DO NOT EVER GET THIS ITEM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Core Items

Good with DPS champions. I never get with Ezreal, Jhin and MF Unless someone else is DPS.
Highest Mana regain stat, works well with Unholy grail Passive. Bunch of good Raw Stats + Acitve. Sometimes I'll get this first.
Strong raw stats! If you can trust your Adc or someone else with dps, Zeke's is for you. When you ult, the ally bonded with can deal 50% of their auto attack damage over 2 ticks (like ignite but magic damage) over 2 seconds in for 10 seconds. Can also be proc'd on Towers and baron. Tank stats are good and work well with Redemption. You also get a slow aura that does damage which can be useful at times :3
25% mana regain = 5 ap. Redemption + Frostfang + Unholy grail = 60 Ap. The extra heal from doing damage is useful~
500 mana, 20% CDR, 65 Armor, easy to proc slows with auto's since Sona's Abilites are low CDR. Works lovely with E Power Chord and Redemption. Tanky sona~ With Redemption and Frostfang you'll have 50% CDR, with transcendence = +20 AP
Good for late game. more ap and hp sustain. Q = slows
After max CDR You can get this but since it dosn't give CDR or Mana/ap, it's not cost efficient for sona. Only buy if your team is getting burst in team fights.
If the enemy team has alot of CC it's usefull. Sometimes I go Redemption, Ardent, Unholy Grail, Mikael's and Frostfang for the %mana = 90 Ap
More ap~ Only get if you're ahead after max CDR
Max mana and hp, gives hp via spamming abilities, gives CDR. Only get this if you're playing tanky Sona or versing a heavy AP Team
you can get this if you wish to ap sona. Gives Nice Ap, CDR, Mana and more damage. I get this if i'm playing Mid or ADC (AP) Sona
Good to play for AP, more damage. Only use it when I play Sona Mid or ADC (AP)
This is Ap sona (What I build mid) Only get void staff if enemy team is stacking MR (lol king doesn't save in order)
This is if you're versing a heavy AD team, If you win early then you may get away with taking Boots of Mobility. You'll have lots of mana, slows and sustain! It may look like that this build gives no ap, Remember 40 ap from Transcendence, 24 - 48 Ap from gathering storm and 15 ap from a Kill/Assist for 10 seconds. (lol king dosn't save in order)
(not in order) These Items I'll use almost every game. If my adc is good then Ardent first, if not then Redemption. If you need more sustain than Unholy Grail. Zekes works well if your adc or someone else who is DPS snowballs early, or can be good late game.

Situational Items

More AP , mana regain and on hit true damage

Synergy with ADC Back to Top

Poor Synergy

22.png 81.png 202.png21.png

81.png 202.png21.png All have one thing in common, they don't rely on auto attacks with dealing damage. This means that Sona's Q and Itemisation aren't as useful compared to the Average & Strong ADC list. Ardent Censer and Zeke's will be less efficient and useful.

22.png Being the better pick out of the 4 since mainly using auto attacks. 22.png is a decent lane bully which helps Sona early game a little, however, the lack of CC before 6, there is very little to help if either of you get caught.
Both 22.png and Sona have a nice Ult combo but if she doesn't have her ult it's  very  hard to Kill enemies.

Like 22.png21.png Is a lane bully and share a good ult combo with Sona. 21.png doesn't move in teams fights as of her ult being a channelling ability, meaning Sona's E is less impactful.

81.png has almost no synergy besides doing damage and having a passive early game which can help Sona achieve late game. If Sona gets caught in lane 81.png can do little to help other than doing more damage and using the healing spell. His Spike is much earlier than Sona's, by that time 81.png falls off a little. Sona is pretty much a heal bot to him, nothing else.

202.png being the worst out of the 4, if either of you are caught in lane there is very little to help each other. It's  very hard to have influence with his ultimate. Since 202.png doesn't move in his ult either and is further back than 21.png, Sona's Q & E isn't going to be useful. 81.png & 202.png Are very hard to work with during mid game.

Average

Each of these ADC's use auto attacks as their main source of damage, Meaning Sona's abilities and itemisation is a lot better. They'll work well with Ardent Censer and Zekes (depending on scenario)

51.png is very boring in lane, there isn't much to help her with unless she gets caught, she scales  slowly having nice synergy with Sona late game.

119.png Would be on the Strong list. He is a very strong early game and godly in snowballing, Sona helps assisting his play style. 119.png is very a Aggressive champion, however many play him passively. If 119.png doesn't have a good early game the likely-hood Sona being useful is less.

145.png is an early game bully, she scales mid/late like Sona giving a nice synergy. She does lots of damage and has high mobility, however since she tends to go ham it's hard to stay with her in team fights.

236.png Has a very strong early game, assisting Sona to her late game spike, however he falls as the game progresses.

15.png Same  as Above ^^. Her E disabling enemy CC on herself to not get caught allowing Sona to have more mana.

18.png and Sona have a great bursting combo at lvl 6. She likes to jump a lot which can be annoying to keep with her

498.png is weak with Sona pre 6 but have a strong late game.

Strong

Buy Ardent Cencer or Zekes = free win

222.png and Sona are very strong Mid and late game, She can utilise Sona's E and Q quite well.

429.png can escape easily after getting caught. Rushing Zeke's with the Ult combo will pack a punch! You'll pretty much receive a free flash ult with more cc. Best Adc for me to carry as Sona.

96.png 29.png 67.png All share a similar play style, weak early, but an extremely strong late game, if you're able to get to late game with these 3 it's pretty much a free win.

110.png with 3 items = free win. lvl 6 ult combo is very stong.
