Summoner Spells Back to Top

Summoner Spells

red_line.png

4.png Flash is the first Summoner Spell and I recommend always taking it when you're playing this champion. This is because Flash is the best Summoner Spell around. It is a really good and a reliable Summoner Spell. It can be used offensively, defensively and is honestly, a really good Spell to take.

12.png Teleport is the second Summoner Spell that you should take on Swain. This Spell is really good because it can be used to get back to lane quicker and it can also be used to help your team. In the early game, you want to teleport back to lane after your first back. Then you should look for Teleport opportunities where you can help your team.

New Runes Back to Top

Runes

red_line.png

50.png Swain's Rune Page has slightly changed with his rework in February 2018. This time around, we are taking Sorcery as the main Rune tree. This is because of out active skill shots thanks to our Q and our E. Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32 Arcane Comet is really good on 50.png Swain because it will allow us to deal even more damage to enemies. Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32 Arcane Comet is a must have on 50.png Swain because it can be activated on all of 50.png Swain's abilities. As 50.png Swain has multiple skill shots to dodge, taking Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32 Arcane Comet will make the enemy have to dodge even more abilities. This means you will have a higher chance of hitting the enemy with more damage in the laning phase. The next Rune you should take is Manaflow%20Band.png?width=32 Manaflow Band. This rune will allow you to sustain through the laning phase and team fights. The next Rune is Transcendence.png?width=32 Transcendence. Transcendence.png?width=32 Transcendence is a good Rune on 50.png Swain because it gives you a positive amount of cooldown reduction at level 10. This will allow us to use our abilities more frequently in team fights and trades. Overall, Transcendence.png?width=32 Transcendence is really good on any caster champion! Your final rune in this tree is Gathering%20Storm.png?width=32 Gathering Storm. This will give you increased amounts of Ability Power throughout the game and will make you stronger as the game goes on.

red_line.png

For your secondary Rune page, you can take Precision. You should take Presence%20of%20Mind.png?width=32 Presence of Mind as your first Rune and Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32 Coup De Grace as your secondary. This is because 50.png Swain is a caster champion who loves to use his abilities often. Taking Presence%20of%20Mind.png?width=32 Presence of Mind will allow you to spam your abilities up to 5 seconds after getting a kill or levelling up. This will make you a real threat in the early game. Coup%20De%20Grace.png?width=32 Coup de Grace is also a good Rune on 50.png Swain because it will allow you to deal extra damage to enemies.

PLEASE NOTE: The rework 50.png Swain is still new. I will update this when more information is revealed and the champion is optimized.

Abilities

red_line.png

Swain's Passive is Ravenous Flock

Ravenous: 50.png Swain can periodically target an immobilized enemy champion and rip out a Soul Fragment from them dealing damage and pulling them toward 50.png Swain.

Flock: Once taken down, enemy champions will leave a Soul Fragment behind that 50.png Swain can collect. On collection, he restores max health. 50.png Swain can store up to 5 at once.

s1.png

red_line.png

Swain's Q is Death's Hand

50.png Swain shoots five bolts into a target direction dealing damage to the first enemy they hit. Enemies can be hit by multiple bolts. Bolts that kill their targets continue onwards and restore some mana.

s2.png

Tips and Tricks

Your swainq.png Q is great. If you are wanting to push the wave quickly, then you can use it on the enemy minions. This will allow you to push the wave. If you are low on mana, you can use this also on low minions to get some mana and also push the wave. You should try to hit as many enemies as possible with the swainq.png Q so if you stun the enemy, then use this directly on them.

The closer the enemy is- the more shots you will be able to hit them with.

red_line.png

Swain's W is Vision of Empire

50.png Swain summons a demonic eye at the target location that explodes after 2 seconds dealing damage and slowing them.

The enemies who are inside the area are revealed and each of them grants 50.png Swain a Soul Fragment.

s3.png

Tips and Tricks

Your  swainw.png W has insane range, it can be used to scout vision around the map and attempt to take away the enemy Junglers camps. You will use it mostly as a diterent in the early game, but it can also be used to scout.

The problem with this swainw.png W is that it takes a really long time to explode. So it is important to position it correctly in trades and team fights!

red_line.png

Swain's E is Nevermove

50.png Swain launches a wave in the target direction dealing damage to all enemies it passes through. Upon reaching its maximum distance the wave returns back to 50.png Swain. It will detonate when it comes into contact with an enemy and briefly Root_icon.png roots them.

s4.png

Tips and Tricks

Your swaine.png E is very good. It can be used to push enemies into your swainw.png W, used to push the lane and used as a deterent. In the early game, you will use this in conjunction with your swainq.png Q to trade with the enemy laner. It is important to aim your swaine.png E correctly because (in most cases) it will shoot behind them and come back to you. You want this to go through, and back through an enemy champion to get the Root_icon.png root.

red_line.png

Swain's Ultimate is Demonic Ascension

50.png Swain frees the demons within him for 12 seconds and gains bonus health. While 50.png Swain's swainr.png Ultimate is active, he drains the 3 closest enemies (prioritizing champions) dealing damage to them each second and healing him.

After restoring an amount of health, Sain can end his swainr.png Ultimate by recasting it.

Recasting: 50.png Swain consumes all of his Soul Fragments dealing damage to all enemies nearby.

s5.png

Tips and Tricks

There is a learning curve with your swainr.png Ultimate. It is important to use it at the right time, and to have as many Soul Fragments as possible before using it. You should also use your swainr.png Ultimate when you are low on health to get some regeneration back.

Your swainr.png Ultimate will be used when the enemy becomes too greedy or over extends in the lane.

Whilst using your swainr.png Ultimate, remember to keep auto attacking and using your other abilities.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Take this in almost all matchups. This is the best starting item on Swain because it gives you health and sustain.
If you are against a very hard matchup you can take Corrupting Potion. This will allow you to sustain in lane.

Core Items

Your first major item is going to by Abyssal Mask. This item gives Swain everything he needs early to survive and deal damage to the enemies.
Your second item is going to be boots. I recommend getting either Ninja Tabi or Mercury's Treads depending on which you need.
Your third item is going to be Liandry's Torment. This item is great on Swain because it gives him magic penetration.
For your fourth item, you should get Zhonya's Hourglass. Remember to use your active in team fights!
You need to get Void Staff on Swain. He loves magic pen so you need to get as much as possible!
For your last item, you should get Rabadon's Deathcap. It gives you a huge boost in damage!

Situational Items

Haven't had much testing with this yet. Some pros are taking it, some are not. Get this first instead of Abyssal Mask.
If you are running out of mana early, you could get yourself a Tear to start with before your first core item.
If you are against a heavy AP team then take Mercury's Treads. If you're against an AD team, take Ninja Tabi.

Itemization

red_line.png

The new 50.png Swain is good and like most champions in League, he has more than 1 possible starting option. The starting items that you will take in most situations are 1056.png Doran's Ring. This is a great starting item for him because it gives him sustain and damage. The other starting item is 2033.png Corrupting Potion. 2033.png Corrupting Potion is really strong if you're against a ranged champion or somebody who likes to constantly fight such as 122.png Darius or 114.png Fiora. 2033.png Corrupting Potion is also good if you're against a heavy sustain enemy such as 8.png Vladimir or 48.png Trundle! Your first major item on 50.png Swain is going to be 3001.png Abyssal Mask. This item is good on 50.png Swain because it gives him a range of stats that benefit him deeply. For example, it will allow you to spam your abilities often with the bonus mana and reduced cooldown. However, if you want to go 3070.png Tear on 50.png Swain, then you will buy it before and 3001.png Abyssal as your first core item. Your second core item is going to be 1001.png Boots. I recommend you get 3111.png Mercury's Treads if you're against a heavy AP team, or 3047.png Ninja Tabi if you're against an AD team. Your third item is going to be 3151.png Liandry's Torment. This item is great on 50.png Swain because it gives him damage, sustain and magic pen. This item provides him with everything he needs in team fights. Your 4th item is going to be 3157.png Zhonya's Hourglass. This item is a must-have on50.png Swain because of its damage, defence and active. Remember to use this in team fights to survive for longer! On some occasions, you may want to get 3157.png Zhonya's third and 3151.png Liandry's 4th. It's situational really, so pick the item you need first.

red_line.png

For your next item, you want to get 3135.pngVoid Staff. Like Vladimir, 50.png Swain benefits greatly from magic penetration and as we are building lots of AP and sustain, we will need more penetration. 3135.png Void Staff is a must have on a lot of champions and 50.png Swain is definitely one of them! For your last item, you want to get either 3089.png Rabadons Deathcap or upgrade your 3070.png Tear to 3048.png Seraph's Embrace. I would recommend getting 3089.png Rabadon's Deathcap if you can, however, if you purchased Tear in the early game then you will need to upgrade it. Alternatively, you could sell it and get 3089.png Rabadons.

VS

Camille

Medium

This is a medium matchup for Swain because you do have the range advantage, but she has the better damage. In the early stages of the game you need to avoid getting hit by her abilities when possible. You need to poke her whenever she comes close. If she uses her jump to leap to you, use your root underneath yourself so when she lands, she gets instantly rooted.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

This is a good matchup for you, but you do not have any kill potential on him. Cho’Gaths passive is very strong because it of the regeneration when he kills a unit. Try and gain a farm advantage in this lane and try to deny him as much as possible.

VS

Darius

Hard

Darius is frustrating to play against because of his passive. Make sure to not let him auto you for free because the bleed will hurt. When laning against a Darius you will have to abuse your range advantage and keep poking him down whenever possible. If you get pulled by his E, use your root and back off. If you’re somehow miss positioned and inside his Q, walk closer to him so you’re dealt less damage.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Easy

This is a good matchup for swain because the enemy is melee. However Dr Mundo is really strong once he gets going. Make sure to not get hit by his Q as they are very strong once they start stacking. You need to abuse your range advantage and poke him whenever possible.

VS

Fiora

Hard

Fiora has a very high kill potential in the solo lanes. Try to poke her when possible but do not be too greedy. Fiora is very good as outplaying her enemies and one miss-step on your behalf will cost you the lane. Try to farm and deny her as much as possible and poke her whenever you can.

VS

Galio

Medium

Currently Galio is very strong. In this matchup you want to poke him when possible and get out of his Q if he throws it at you. Also, if he taunts- make sure to run away. The range is big on his taunt, and so is the slow it gives him. You should be able to escape when he channels it.

VS

Gragas

Easy

This is a good matchup early for Swain because the enemy is melee and you have the range advantage. At level 6 this lane becomes tougher so make sure to abuse what you can at the start of the game. Focus on poking him down when he comes to farm. Dodge his abilities and his ultimate.

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Try not to get hit by her abilities. If you do get hit by her abilities-back off out of range of the tentacles. Try to poke her whenever possible and put her behind. In this matchup, you need to focus on farming and denying her as much as possible.

VS

Irelia

Easy

Try to deny her CS when possible and poke her with your abilities. Her W passive will keep her healthy when she auto’s so make sure to poke her while she’s in animation lock. Also, do not push to far up because she can jump on minions with her Q. If she does jump on you, make sure to use your W on yourself.

VS

Jax

Medium

Poke him whenever possible, and try to slow him when he gets near you. Jax will jump on you with his Q: so root him. If he uses his E, just back off because he may be moving to collapse and jump on you. Poke him with your E and Q and do not auto him when he has his E up.

VS

Lucian

Medium

lucian is a pain to play against because he can collapse on you quite easily. Try your best to poke him with your abilities so he cannot trade with you.

VS

Malphite

Medium

This is a good matchup because he is melee and is a tank. While his passive is strong it can be easily broken. Make sure to abuse his passive and not let him get it, auto and poke when possible. You need to win this matchup early by clearing waves, pushing him under tower and not letting him farm.

VS

Maokai

Medium

This matchup is good for you, however it can quickly get out of hand. Maokai is melee and you’re ranged so you have the advantage. Make sure to auto him and deal damage when he comes to farm. Also try to deny him CS with the range advantage. Beware of the bushes on the topside of the map as his Saplings will grow larger when placed in there.

VS

Renekton

Medium

Renekton is a tough one because he is a fighter that deals extreme amounts of burst damage and is rather tanky. He has a lot of sustain through his Fury bar and Q. I recommend poking him when possible and trying to not get caught out, if he jumps on you with his E- then back off and kite him.

VS

Riven

Medium

When playing against a Riven, make sure to keep your distance. She is melee, which is good for you- however she is really good at getting on her enemies because of her kit. You can counter this by using your W on yourself. If she gets too close to you, and lands in your W then she will be rooted. In most cases, the enemy Riven will outplay herself.

VS

Teemo

Medium

This is a frustrating lane because of his blind and poisoning. Even though it is frustrating- it should be an even lane. Try to use your abilities on him when possible (E + Q) and try to poke him down. Beware of going for trades unless he has wasted his blinding dart.

VS

Trundle

Medium

Trundle is annoying to play against because of his passive sustain. When fighting him, try to dodge his E and always stay out of range for his bite. Trundle’s ultimate is annoying when trading, if he uses it then back off and wait for it to finish. Poke him with your E and Q when possible.

VS

Urgot

Medium

You have the range advantage but he does have a lot of blast damage. Stay out of his blast damage and make sure to walk away if he comes in for a trade!

VS

Vayne

Easy

Vayne is squishy early and you can kill him. Try your best to poke him whenever you can and go for trades whenever you can.

Early Game Back to Top

Early Game

red_line.png

In the early game, you main job is to farm, poke and deny. As 50.png Swain, you’re really strong in the majority of your matchups. If you’re against a champion who is melee, then you will have an even better time. Laning as 50.png Swain is pretty simple too, like many other champions he has to farm up and get CS for his first item.

If you’re in a good matchup, you should try to deny the enemy as much as possible, and go for trades whenever you can. Learning when to trade and when not to takes practice so you need to make sure that you are trading at the best possible time to get the best possible outcome.  As 50.png Swain, you can poke often in lane and because of your Kit, you can deal lots of burst damage.

The standard laning phase for 50.png Swain consists of dealing damage and farming. At level 2, 3, 4 and 6 you can go for an all in engage. Make sure to watch the map before doing so. Always hit level 2 first.

red_line.png

Mid Game Back to Top

Mid Game

red_line.png

In the Mid game, 50.png Swain is at his strongest. By now you should have at least your first core item, and possibly even your second or third. During this time, the game will become harder and everyone should start grouping. Before fighting anyone, you need to watch your positioning, your team comp and your cooldowns. 50.png Swain should not flat out fight enemies, instead, he needs to poke them and go for trades when he can.

Team fighting is situational in the Mid game. This is because 50.png Swain is good at splitpushing and team fighting. You can choose to do which one you want but be prepared to do both. You can quickly clear waves thanks to your swaine.png E and your swainq.png Q. This will allow you to push and rotate to another lane and help your team. Of course, be prepared to back quickly and escape if you see more than 1 enemy coming for you.

red_line.png

Late Game Back to Top

Late Game

red_line.png

Like stated throughout this guide. You will need to poke before going into any fights or trades. This is especially prominent in the late game where one bad team fight can cost the game. In the late game, you will need to pick off enemies in team fights and go for trades whenever you see somebody missing or out of position. It is important to look and fight for these opportunities because it can easily win you the game.

50.png Swain is like most AP champions, you want to poke before going for any trades or fights. You can do this easily with your swainq.png Q and your swaine.png E.

Alternatively, if the enemy has heavy sustain and is near impossible to poke against. Then I would recommend trying your best to flank the enemy rather than going straight in. Try to make any engagement a surprise and catch the enemy off guard. If you cannot fight 5v5, then I suggest splitpushing and grouping when your team needs you. Try your best to focus the carries and win the team fights!

Combos Back to Top

Combos

red_line.png

50.png Swain has a few different combos that you can use on the rift. Check these out!

Before going for any trades or combos:

  • Check the map. Is the enemy Jungler missing or headed your way? If hes missing you may not be able to go for a full combo. If he is in another lane, then go for your combo!
  • Make sure you have enough mana before going in for a combo. If you are about to level up or just leveled- then you can go for a trade!
  • Remember to auto attack whilst using your other abilities!

red_line.png

  1. swaine.png E + swainq.png Q | This is a good combo when you want to poke the enemy.
  2. swainq.png Q + swaine.png E | Another good combo if you want to poke in the early game.
  3. swainw.png W + swaine.png E + swainq.png Q | Good combo after level 3.
  4. swainr.png R + swaine.png E + swainq.png Q + swainw.png W | Good combo if you have multiple souls.Remember to bring the enemy closer with your E Root_icon.png root! This will make hitting your swainw.png W much easier.
  5. swainr.png R + swainq.png Q + swaine.png E + swainw.png W | Good combo if you have multiple souls. Remember to bring the enemy closer with your E Root_icon.png root!
  6. swainw.png W + swainr.png R + swainq.png Q + swaine.png E | Good combo if you have multiple souls. Try to hit your swainw.png W first, and then follow it up with poke from your other abilities!
  7. swainw.png W + swainr.png R + swainq.png Q + swaine.png E | Good combo if you have multiple souls. Try to hit your swainw.png W first, and then follow it up with poke from your other abilities!
