Summoner Spells Back to Top

Your first Summoner Spell will always be 4.png Flash, because you rely on fast and effective movement. All of Thresh's peel is cc and all in potential. You don't chase and poke, so 6.png Ghost is not really a good option.

Now, there are 2 common options for the second Summoner Spell on Thresh. Most obvious in the role of a guardian all-in supporter would be the 3.png Exhaust Spell. You can reduce the opponent's attack strenght farly and ease the accuracy of your threshq.png Death Sentence, when you are low on mana and cannot afford another threshe.png Flair or risk shot. Regarding Thresh's strong 'Chain' CC, if we go the full all-in build ignoring any disadvantage in sustain, 14.png Ignite can be a nice opportunity either.
Thresh is one of the most dangerous early game tanks, because of his massive damage. If you can rely on your accuracy and crowd controlling skills as Thresh, go ahead and pick Ignite. It grants you alot more pressure on your opponent's adc during your Laning Phase. When you landed your Q and your ADC is able to follow up, instantly ignite to reduce the 7.png Heal effectivity and grant vision in bush fights.
Now I said there are 2 common Summoner Spell picks on Thresh, but there is still that strange 11.png Smite up in the description.
Well, there may be times, where you really made yourself a name with your champion and people rely on your carry potential. If your team lacks damage and your ADC gets brutally counterpicked, you have the option to pick Smite.
There are two main advantages which convinced me to add that method to this guide.
First, you can create evil pressure in Lane by smiting minions with high health wealths for quick pushing or instantly killing the living shield of your opponent's Champions, while launching your threshq.png Death Sentence. The big advantage of Summoner Spells is their indepentend casting conditions. You may cast Smite during the 0,5 second delay of Thresh's Q. Even High-Elo opponents wont be able to predict a perfect Smite on a Cannon Minion, behind which they feel save.
The second advantage is the item range. A combination of 1419.png Bloodrazor and your Passive Ability can guarantee you a whole lot of additional Damage to take out an opponent's carry with 2 hits. Also 1401.png Cinderhulk with Stalker's Blade gives you an additional movement opportunity and the incredibly strong Health buff of cinderhulk. This technique is uncommon and may not please all of your teammates, but keep it in mind, maybe you will face a Thresh playing it and shredding your backline before you can see where that damage comes from.

Masteries Back to Top

While the Cunning Masteries are pretty clear (as in substitute for almost every supporter), there is alot to discuss about the Resolve Skilltree. Depending on your playstyle, you have to chose between resistances and health and obviously estimate the 4th Level and Keystone Masteries. For the first Resolve Mastery I chose Unyielding, because it increases your passively high Defense Values percentage. The Explorer Mastery is the best option for the second tier, because Thresh requires alot of Movement Speed to master his positioning and making his plays.
On tier 4 it's a hard decision between all of the options. I normally pick Insight for the cooldowns or Perservance to compensate Thresh's missing Lane Sustain.
Now for the Keystone Mastery we could either pick  Courage Of The Colossus or Stoneborn Pact. Both have nice triggered effects, which match Thresh's playstyle very well. I stick with Stoneborn Pact because of the 5% Health, which supplements my Health-based playstyle.

Most players prefer to max out threshe.png Flair first, to ease the lasthitting and increase the peel damage, which is a solid strategy. I suggest sticking to it unless you master your threshq.png Death Sentence. I max Q to keep the cooldowns low, so I am able to let my ADC poke the opponents as much as possible. Of course this decision also depends on your mates. If you support a passive player, who prefers to concentrate on lasthitting and engaging all-in upon a call, it doesn't really make sense to max your Q out first. Also this technique requires a good lasthitting behaviour, or you may miss your 3302.png Relic Shield gold opportunity.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Start with your Standard Support Core Build
A good alternative if you want to focus on peeling your opponents or have problems to lasthit

Core Items

Rightous Glory is a great item fo every heavy all-in supporter. It grants a really good sustain value in Early- to Mid-Game and enforces unstoppable engages.
Vision is most important thing you will ever have to manage. Place pinkwards to your sides river bush, so you can defend them if necessary.
get sweeping lense after you bought sightstone so you decide what enemies may see and what not. Also upgrade as soon as possible so you can detect enemy stealth champs and destroy more than only one ward.
Regarding your playstyle, chose your boots wisely, never underestimate the Passive Effects they grant you. Boots Of Mobility are for passive Supporters, who don't peel to much
Locket is a good pick against mixed- and ap-based damage teams. Its passive boni and the shield also greatly assist your teammates.

Situational Items

A must have against strong AD enemies like Draven. It protects you nicely with 100 armor, gives you bonus cooldoown reduction and also slows nearby opponent's attackspeed.
This one is sometimes helpful against teemos and other trappers so you aren't always slowed. Also keep this in mind when buying sunfire cape, because you will always be slowed while passing jungle camps or minions when you use boots of mobility.
Important to buy when facing Warwicks, Blitzcranks or other brutal engagers and surpressors.
Whether you must tank strong cc or siege enemy towers and inhibitors, these are your items.
Hunter's Machete is another reliable lasthiting support and you will have to get Stalker's Blade to slow enemies when your grab is out always when you pick smite instead of exhaust. Get the Bloodrazor Enchantment if you need to compensate your team damage. The 25% bonus health of cinderhulk are increadibly strong regarding, that you also get another 350 health points. Remember not to buy cinderhulk and sunfire cape, because they are unique.
If enemies are full AD and you are getting smashed into the ground with 2 armor items, get this one and see them killing theirselves.
Well, if enemies go full ap and you don't know how to help you get spirit visage.
This may help you in case of siege, offensive ap enemies or when your own team goes full AD.
Your last resort for both teams going brutally on AP. Steals enemy Magic Resist and gives it to you and your mates...
Redemption. Well it's just the coolest item on this planet.
If you look for more armor, go for one of these. If you didn't buy Righteous Glory, pick up Randuin's Omen to ease the skillshotting on opponents, while they are slowed.
The ultimate Health item. In combination with the matching Masteries and Runes a great tool for Defense and Sustain.
Only if you need to compensate damage! Grants slow, damage and health.
If ahead, you can try to quickly get these items. You will take space with Sightstone in Lategame.
Grants great Defense Values and can be used to provide much pressure on push.

VS

Blitzcrank

Easy

When blitzcrank grabs you into the near of his adc, simply ult and e so they will feel your true power. After that you will have much time to avoid them escaping with your Q. Only secure that your adc is near and river is warded.

VS

Braum

Medium

Braum is a great protector and his shield disables your q damage and cc. He can also jump towards his allies, so it's hard to hit a Q on his adc.
Otherwise you are thresh and you can hold him away from your adc using you e so he won't be able to hit his legendary autohit stun.
Also he is meele and so you are able to poke his shield down from secure range.
But regarding your long autohit animation be aware of his Qs and their evil slow.
If you play safe and land some good hooks on enemy adc this one should be ok.

VS

Draven

Easy

Draven's damage depends on catching his axes, so if you simply aim your Q on their landing spots, you have easy play.
Even if he can dodge your hook, he forfeits lots of damage and your adc can win trades.
Regarding that he is kind of low, you will win most all-in engages.

VS

Leona

Medium

Well, when you engage, she will stun. So you must use your combos quickly to help your adc.
When you are stunned before you used ultimate and e, the enemies will quickly catch and kill him.
Your advantage is, that your q range is bigger than her e range, so you are able to outplay her. Also your e can dash her away while she tries to get towards you using her e.

VS

Lulu

Hard

When you engage she will use her w, so try to get her w out before you engage by faking attacks or playing offensive.
Try to take the target off which is not buffed by Lulu's ultimate and her e. Lulu is all in all a strong Thresh counter , but if you get good ganks and you can force Lulu's spells out you will be able to win the lane.

VS

Morgana

Hard

Morgana is a beast, because all your cc may become useless if she uses her e before. Hold your eyes open and engage when her e expired.
Also try to avoid her Qs, because you wont be able to play escapes with Q and W when you are caged.

VS

Sivir

Hard

It's all about her e.
Just try to force her e out before you engage. Her range and pushing power won't hurt you much, because as Thresh you always have home advantage under tower. If it's neccessary, simply hook her support and you can win trades.
