Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png Flash

Flash is a must have for ADCs. It helps you to position yourself, to gap close to an enemy, to jump over walls and to dodge deadly abilities. It's just the best summoner spell in the game due to being so versatile.

7.png Heal

Heal is very important in bot lane due to being a summoner spell for two people. It grants you more survivability in two ways. You heal yourself and an ally for a small amount and also boost the movementspeed by 30% for you and your ally. It's like a "two in one" summoner spell and always a good choice.

1.png Cleanse

Cleanse instead of Heal is an option against certain team compositions but it will be outclassed by Heal most of the time.

Your summoner spells are extremely important for you as an ADC and often decide whether you'll live or die.
Don't use your summoner spells aggressively to go for a kill if you die in return. That's not worth (most of the time). A defensive use of summoner spells will have a bigger impact on your game and playstyle (long term) than an offensive use of them.

Don't skill your abilities too early. If you don't need any ability level 1 and do not want to push the lane automatically with your E passive wait with leveling up an ability until you really need it, so you can get rid of the E passive for the first wave.

tristanapassive.png Passive - Draw a Bead

  • Your passive increases your auto attack range as you level
  • You automatically get better with every level

tristanaq.png Q - Rapid Fire

  • Your Q increases your attack speed for 5 seconds
  • It has no cost but a relatively long cooldown
  • Use it to push turrets or to fight enemy champions

tristanaw.png W - Rocket Jump

  • Your escape ability
  • It slows the enemy which makes it a good ability for chasing
  • It resets itself after a kill, an assists or after Explosive Charge detonates at maximum stacks on an enemy champion

tristanae.png E - Explosive Charge

  • Main damage ability
  • Passive: Enemies slain by Tristana's auto attacks will explode, dealing damage to all nearby enemies
  • Tristana adds stacks to the enemy by basic attacks or abilities to increase the damage
  • You can use Explosive Charge on enemy turrets

tristanar.png R - Buster Shot

  • It's either needed to finish off the enemy or to disengage
  • Will deal damage to one target but can knock back multiple targets
  • You can do a basic attack after you use it in certain moments

Situational Items

Start with

Doran's Blade + 1 HP Pot + Warding Totem

1055.png2003.png3340.png
  • Standard starting items for ADCs
  • It grants you health, sustain and bonus damage

The Warding Totem the best starting trinket for AD carries. This trinket will help you to cover your lane from jungle ganks and let you ward the bushes in the lane to have more vision in general. You can check where to ward in the laning phase under the "Warding as an ADC" section.

Core

The core item build paths below are different in certain aspects but share the same amount of gold spent to aquire them. Here they are.

Standard

1055.png1038.png3085.png3006.png
  • 5450 gold
  • It grants 48 attack damage, 30% critical strike and 75% attack speed
  • This is the most standard early build path for Tristana and goes well in 75% of all games
  • The Runaan's Hurricane passive effect grants you a good teamfighting ability and great waveclear
  • Order: Doran's Blade -> B.F. Sword -> Runaan's Hurricane -> Berserker Greaves

Farming

1055.png1083.png1037.png3085.png3006.png
  • 5475 gold
  • It grants 40 attack damage, 30% critical strike and 75% attack speed
  • This build is made for farming a lot to scale better into the mid and late game
  • The Runaan's Hurricane passive effect grants you a good teamfighting ability and great waveclear
  • Order: Doran's Blade -> Cull -> Pick Axe -> Runaan's Hurricane -> Berserker Greaves

Fighting

1055.png1038.png1037.png3006.png3086.png1042.png
  • 5325 gold
  • It grants 73 bonus attack damage, 20% critical strike chance and 62% attack speed
  • This build path is made for early fights, especially for 1 vs 1s due to its high raw attack damage
  • I recommend to build this if you are ahead of your opponent
  • You miss the Runaan's Hurricane passive effect nor you got the Infinity Edge passive effect so you have a little worse teamfight and slightly worse but still good waveclear
  • Order: Doran's Blade -> B.F. Sword -> Pick Axe - Berserker Greaves -> Zeal -> Dagger -> (later: Runaan's Hurricane)

Situational

Your 3rd item is very situational and can be in one of the following categories: Attack Speed, Armor Penetration, Other.

Armor Penetration

If you are up against two or more tanks Armor Penetration is your best choice implied that they buy armor of course. Now you have to choose between Lord Dominik' Regards 3036.png and Mortal Reminder 3033.png.
Mortal Reminder is only a good option if the enemy team has some sort of healing (e.g. Dr. Mundo, Swain, Soraka or the infamous item Redemption) which you can deny. If this isn't the case you are free to buy Lord Dominik's Regards which will increase your damage by a maximum of 15% (depending on the situation) which is huge.

Attack Speed

If you don't need Armor Penetration you are almost free to buy an Attack Speed item. Here you can choose between Phantom Dancer 3046.png, Statikk Shiv 3087.png and Rapid Firecannon 3094.png. I recommend buying Phantom Dancer only if you face many bruisers and assassins to deny them some damage. In most cases you have to choose from Statikk Shiv and Rapid Firecannon. In most cases you will end up with Statik Shivv because it grants you bonus magic damage for teamfighting and a good waveclear. If your goal is it to siege enemy turrets you should go for Rapid Firecannon due to its passive ability which grants you bonus range and extra tower damage. The range can help you to poke enemies and the bonus tower damage speaks for itself.

Other

If you have problems with CC you can purchase Quicksilver Sash 3140.png to protect yourself. If you need Lifesteal you can upgrade it to Mercurial Scimitar 3139.png immediately. If you don't need it you can go with an Attack Speed or Armor Penetration item (most likely an Armor Penetration item). If you die way too fast you can go for Bloodthirster 3072.png to prevent assassin and bruisers from killing you 100 to 0. Bloodthirster also helps you to heal yourself back and is also a valuable option in general teamfights and works very well with Runaan's Hurricane.

Defensive Options

You have several defensive items to choose from as your last item but they are very situational.

3026.png - Guardian Angel is in general a good item to survive in teamfights.

3102.png - Banshee's Veil is very good to prevent assassination from a magical damage dealing assassin like LeBlanc, Katarina or Fizz.

3156.png - Maw of Malmortious is a different option against magical damage assassination. It also grants you offensive stats but is less defensive than Banshee's Veil.

3065.png - Spirat Visage is a must have if you have a good amount of self healing (Warlord's Bloodlust + Mercurial Scimitar or Bloodthirster and need Magic Resistance.

3143.png - Randuin's Omen helps you a lot against enemy physical damage dealing champions. It works very well against AD Carries, Bruisers (especially Yasuo) and AD Assassins.

End Build

3085.png3031.png3006.png3036.png3072.png3094.png
This could be you(r full build). In the end you will end up with at least one item out of every category. As your last item you can go for something defensive or another offensive item like Rapid Firecannon in this case.

3006.png for 3046.png
If you are full build and have enough gold you can seel Berserker Graves for Phantom Dancer. Your out of combat Movement Speed will be lower than before but you gain critical strike chance, movement speed when in combat and damage reduction against the target you are fighting with.

2140.png
Never forget Elixir of Wrath. It helps you to deal more damage and grants you sustain. If you are full build or a close to a game ending teamfight buy Elixir of Wrath if you can't buy anything else. It will help you.

Support Synergies Back to Top

These are the following supports that I recommend playing together with Tristana as they are currently in the meta and fit to her. You can still play other champions as well to support Tristana. This list is based on my personal experience and some statistics from higher elo.

S Tier Supports

12.png Alistar is a hero. He has one of the best engages and disengages and can hold the enemy long in one place to let Tristana deal the damage. Alistar also brings a bit of sustain with him. Look for his engages and follow up with your Rocket Jump and Explosive Charge if you are willing to give 100% to get the kill. Alistar is good for tower diving which is good since you are a natural pushing champion. Try to get help from the junglers and don't be scared of tower dives.

201.png Braum is like a little Alistar in my opinion. He shares good CC, tankyness and can even protect Tristana better. Therefore he has no sustain. You can't have it all. Try to look for trades when Braum applied his passive to someone and play around it. Always stay quite close to Braum so he can protect you with his shield and you are able to attack the enemies with a bodyguard at your side.

40.png Playing with Janna is quite simple. As soon as Janna puts her shield on you you are able to trade the enemies without getting too much damage in return. You will almost always win trades if you do it correctly. Janna also brings a good disengage with her so you are quite safe from hard engages. Be aware of Janna's cooldowns because she can't do anything without her spells unlike the tanks above.

267.png Nami is a slightly different version of Janna. She has a heal instead of a shield so you are able to trade and then heal it back up instead of waiting for a shield. She has good disengage, a movement speed buff and a stun if the enemies stick to close to each other so Tristana can attack them freely. If Nami hit a bubble or you got the damage buff you are free to attack the enemies. The bonus movement speed will help you looking for trades.

A Tier Supports

432.png Bard is a good lane bully while also getting Tristana some sustain to farm safely. If Bard is able to open a fight with his stun Tristana is free to join. If Bard put down some healing shrines you are free to trade some health for a small fight so you can heal it back with the shrines.

43.png Karma works a little like Nami and can hurass the enemy while buffing you. If she has poked the enemy quite a lot she will look for an opening with her W and will hold the enemy in place so you can go on him. Karma has a lot of lane presence so she will do the work for you. You only sit back, farm and wait until Karma needs your help or has found an opening.

25.png Morgana enables good situations for Tristana to take without many risks. If Morgana lands a Q on the enemy ADC or a squishy support you are able to follow it with Rocket Jump and Explosive Charge due to Morgana having a Black Shield for you which protects you from magical damage and CC. If Morgana can't find any openings you can just farm and stay a bit safer in lane. Due to her Black Shield you are very likely to escape a gank.

16.png Soraka can bully the lane if done right but will often just stand back and heal you back up. No matter how she plays you are free to only farm the lane. Do not risk much in this lane and don't jump in offensively because Soraka cannot enable a fight nor she can really safe you from being too far in. You can look for some trades in lane but it's unlikely that you can go all in for a kill.

223.png Tahm Kench can protect you very well while he is able to enable fights. You can look for almost any possible engage as long as Tahm Kench is near you to get you out. This way you will lose less health than the enemy and will go out ahead in lane. If he is able to catch someone with his tongue be sure to follow up but do not use Rocket Jump immediately. Use Rocket Jump to chase the enemy when he wants to escape after he got eaten by Tahm Kench.

412.png Thresh enables fights very well if he hits his skillshots but can barely do anything when behind. If he is able to land his hook follow him by attacking the target. You are able to chase the target with Rocket Jump when Thresh is able to throw a lantern to help you out. This way you can go out safely even if you don't get the kill to escape with the Rocket Jump reset. If Thresh fails to make plays you are forced to stay as far back as possible and farm yourself up.

B (and below) Tier Supports

53.png63.png89.png37.png44.png26.png143.png

I don't think that these champions fit very well to Tristana but will work if you play well around them and their cooldowns and look for a trade when it's safe. Go trough the laning phase without many sacrifices and do well in the mid to late game.

Early Game Back to Top

Focus on farming in the early game. You'll be weaker than the enemy most of the time. Try to have some wave control which is hard due to your Explosive Charge passive. You often will end up pushing accidentally.

Apply Explosive Charge on an enemy, auto attack him once or twice and go away to win trades. If your Support can hold the enemy in place or boost your stats you can stay for more attacks. Use your auto attacks to punish the enemy ADC when he is last hitting. Just do this when you don't miss creeps yourself or get (more) damage in return.

You can go for an all in level 2 and 6 if you reach it before your enemies. You jump on the enemy with your Rocket Jump, apply Explosive Charge on them (in the air if you can) and do basic attacks to either finish them off or to force them into their base. If you jump in level 6, you can use your ultimate to finish them off and shoot an auto attack after them.

Team Fighting Back to Top

In the mid and late game your team will look to take objectives which will lead to teamfights.
Teamfights are very important in League of Legends and define the way of the game 20+ minutes into the game.

Your way of teamfighting isn't different from mid to late game but it is slightly different to other ADCs.

In teamfights you should try to stay behind your frontline and attack the closest target to yourself. If somebody comes to close to you and you are not able to kill them in time you have to either jump away or use your ultimate to create distance between you and your enemies.

If your team is winning the fight and you have to close the gap quickly you can use Rocket Jump to follow your enemies. In certain scenarios you are able to jump on a champion out of position to pick him up quickly and then jump again to safety but this requires a lot of knowledge about teamfighting and can lose you the teamfight if done poorly.

In teamfight it's also important to pay attention to cooldowns of everyone around you and yourself. If the enemy has no abilties to kill you you have a time window which you can use to perform risky plays. On the other hand you have to know what your allies can do to help you and how much damage you can deal at all.

If you are not teamfighting you are looking to get more gold by killing minions. Go to lanes and quickly push them out to later return to your team again. Tristana is made for killing huge minion waves quickly so you can grab a lot of gold really quick. Do not stay away from your team for too long. Either your team gets engaged or you will be caught.

Pros and Cons Back to Top

Pros

  • Amazingly good late game carry
  • Quite safe playstyle with Rocket Jump and Buster Shot
  • Good wave clearing
  • Excellent sieging champion
  • Is a good teamfight ADC due to the high range and Rocket Jump resets

Cons

  • Pushes lane most of the times
  • Can't really make use of her passive in early levels
  • Denies herself creeps with Explosive Charge passive if played poorly

Warding as an ADC Back to Top

Your warding as an ADC is limited in the early phase of the game due to just having trinkets or a control ward in rare occasions. Here I want to show you where to ward in the lane.

Green: Trinket
Pink: Control Wards

I personally look to have a bush in my lane warded so I can see when someone steps into it. Also the river and tribush should always be warded. Here I would place my control ward as an ADC. If I am on blue side I put my control ward in the ward next to the river. If I am on red side I put my control ward into the tribush. Sometimes I put the control ward in the first lane bush (the bush that is closest to your tower) so I am safe from Teleport ganks.
Of course you cannot ward it all so you need some help from your support.
