Summoner Spells Back to Top

I usually run one of two combos but let's start with 21.png & 4.png. Use this when you lane against long range burst/poke mages, for example 99.png115.png etc. This is because you can't really get close enough to use any other summoners on them so you have to rely on dodging EVERYTHING they throw at you. 7.png is useless in mid-lane now as 3165.png adds Grievous Wounds for 8 Seconds. 8. Seconds. This means 21.png is the only other option to save you against their poke/burst combos.

Next is 3.png & 4.png. Use this when laning against close-range champions, for example 238.png91.png etc. In these match-ups, you can still use 21.png, but using exhaust will help you run away from these guys too and when they all in, 3.png reduces their damage by 40%, which can actually be more beneficial than a barrier. Bringing 3.png is arguably better than a barrier as it has a more versatile use too.

As for 12.png & 4.png, you should only use this when you are confident you can win lane. This combo is good as you can stack away, giving you the advantage in lane but you could just teleport back to lane to die straight away. You could also pull of some good ganks as 45.png with this but due to his low mobility, you may find it difficult. Not my no.1 choice for a summoner spell.

And finally, 14.png & 4.png. A big no-no. Note: If you're close enough to use 14.png, you're out of position. Yes I get it, it could get you a kill. But, if your combo doesn't one-shot someone, you shouldn't be all-inning them anyway and chances are, you're going to die shortly after. You go squish, you have low mobility. It's not worth the risk.

Avoid using any other summoners and if you haven't unlocked 4.png yet, use 6.png as a substitute.

TL;DR - Either 3.png OR 21.png combined with 4.png depending on match-up. Mages = 21.png. Assassins = 3.png

Masteries Back to Top

The one and only mastery page you should use.

Cunning

Savagery - For last hitting when you're not last hitting with veigarbalefulstrike.png.

Assassin - You should be the only ally in lane and damage is key. NEED. MORE DAMAGE.

Merciless - NEED. MORE. DAMAGE.

Dangerous Game - Great mastery. Could save you against an ignite and is just all around useful.

Precision - MAGIC PEN = DAMAGE.

Thunderlord's Decree - Objective is to kill them in one burst. Thunderlord's will help you do that. MORE. DAMAGE.

Ferocity

Sorcery - DAMAGE.

Feast - Offers great lane sustain which is essential to prolong action-packed, intense, stacking game-play. veigarpassive.png

Natural Talent - DAMAGE.

Double Edged Sword - This is the only one which can be changed up easily. It offers a permanent 3% damage increase with a trade-off of taking 1.5% increased damage which doesn't really matter because you're going to blow up if you get focused anyway. In an average game, with the amount of damage 45.png deals, you are almost certain to kill every champion at least once so that makes Bounty Hunter viable. Team fights allow Battle Trance to become handy but most fights alone don't last 3 seconds. It's either they blow up, or you do. For me, Double Edged Sword is just the more consistent and reliable option.

Resolve

You could go down the resolve tree and experiment but your main focus is dealing as much damage as possible. Resolve really doesn't contribute to the cause. It can give you greater lane sustain but not enough to make it viable in my eyes. But at the end of day, masteries are focused more around the PLAYER than the CHAMPION, so really it's up to you but these are the masteries that have consistently worked for me.

TL;DR - Use masteries in picture. They give the best all-round damage/sustain for 45.png.

Okay so lets go over your abilities. Your Q (veigarbalefulstrike.png) is your main tool and therefore, should be maxed first. You use this to stack up your ability as every minion last hit with this ability, gives you 1 AP. Now this doesn't sound a lot, but when you have 200 stacks and over 600 AP at 20 minutes in with nothing but a 3165.png and 3089.png, you'll be glad you stacked. Also your Q, after hitting a target, shoots out another Q a little further on. Now this means you can stack 2 minions at the same time! Doing this means maximum effectiveness in terms of mana efficiency, try and do this when possible using auto-attacks to help.

Your W (veigardarkmatter.png) is a big meteor that deals "tons of damage" to anyone under it after a 1.2 seconds. Perfect for clearing waves and is usually the larger chunk of damage that comes from your combo. Max this second.

Your E (veigareventhorizon.png) is almost the bread and butter of your champion killing combo. It spawns a circle that stuns anyone on the edge, but leaves the center empty, leaving enemies free to move around. When you learn the measurements of your E, you can consistently stun your target despite the brief delay. Level this second to help escape a possible early gank but otherwise, max this last.

Now your R (veigarr.png). So, someone at Riot Games thought it was a  G R E A T  idea to make his R EXECUTE DAMAGE instead of damage based on 80% of the targets ability power. Now instead of him countering AP champions, he now counters everyone. This is the reason why his R is completely busted. Press R and things die, maximum damage output when the enemy is at 33% or below, max this third.

So now the cool thing about 45.png's kit. Whenever one of his abilities come into contact with an enemy champion, he gains a stack. You hit a champion with your Q? You get a stack. Oh, you've stunned 2 people with your E? You get 2 stacks. So when dreams become a reality, you could get the what I like to call the "wet dream of stacking", explained below.

A combo should be as follows:

                                                                      IF HIT dot-pattern.png veigardarkmatter.png dot-pattern.png veigarbalefulstrike.png dot-pattern.png veigarr.png
IF MISS dot-pattern.png TACTICAL WITHDRAWAL (BACK OFF TO SAFETY) dot-pattern.png

The wet-dream combo is an veigareventhorizon.png, hitting 2 champions on top of each-other. This allows you to follow up and hit them both with veigardarkmatter.png and veigarbalefulstrike.png, resulting in one dying and you using veigarr.png, killing the second one for a double kill. This in total, grants you a whopping 19 Stacks, AKA 19 AP. That's almost a straight up 1052.png. His Passive (veigarpassive.png), is completely busted. That's gaining 19 AP for free, in less than 3 seconds. Now imagine this over a 40 minute game, you become out of control. You don't even need the execute damage if you're fed, you just click R on the ADC and they blow up.

So let me touch over team fighting:
- Try and position yourself to the back of the team and land a veigareventhorizon.png, if you can't use on the enemy group, use it as a peel for yourself or an ally.
- Try and kill the biggest threat on the enemy team without throwing yourself out of position.
- Line up your abilities to hit as many people as possible, you can ruin the team if you do this.
- Use veigarr.png on a low health target if you can't kill the biggest threat, it's better you use it, kill someone and have it on CD rather than not use it at all and possibly die because of it.

Late game, you can tend to just use veigarbalefulstrike.png and follow up with veigarr.png for a kill on squishies. Remember this. It saves you the liability of landing an veigareventhorizon.png.

TL;DR - Use Q to last hit when possible. Stun before using combo.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Standard start. Use this most games. Offers great mana sustain in lane.
If you think you're going to snowball/you need more pots but don't want to sacrifice AP.
Rare start. If they have a lot of Skillshots, could use this against Lux/Ziggs if you don't feel confident.
Against AD and you don't feel confident.

Core Items

Should be your first item on your first back. Great mana sustain allows you to stay in lane and stack more.
Lost Chapter into Morellonomicon. Great value for gold. CD, a bunch of AP, Mana. Perfect first item.
Should be your second item in an average game. You benefit of this passive so much more because of your stacks. Must buy.
Necessary item. Magic pen is much more valuable to Veigar is he stacks AP with his passive. Magic pen is his best friend.
Only really boots choice. Gives much needed magic pen.
Example offensive full build. 30% CDR and a bunch of AP + Magic Pen.
A more defensive build. Lucidity boots for reduced Summoner spell CD. Banshees shield for ability block passive and ROA for health and mana sustain. Build gives 30% CDR and great AP.

Situational Items

Zhonyas first when against a heavy assassin like Zed. You can't sustain and stack if you're dead.
If you're getting destroyed by AP in lane.
Avoid this item unless you're replacing Sorcerer's shoes at final build. Passive is useless as you burst, not poke. Gives good health and AP though with +15 Magic pen.
If you feel your combo for some reason is just not strong enough, add an auto-attack that scales off 50% AP. You have 1000 AP? Have a 500+ damage AA. Also PERFECT for pushing towers (1/2 shot potential late game)

VS

Annie

Medium

Squish or be squished. If she gets a stun off on you you're dead. If you get a stun off on her she's dead. She has great sustain and a deadly combo just like you. Try and catch her in a veigareventhorizon.png and hope to god she doesn't land a full combo on you first. Might be worth building 3102.png first to stop the stun.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

Who actually plays this garbage champ lmao... easy lane. Basically a free-farm lane, he can't do much to you unless he lands a aurelionsolq.png. Dodge that, ward your brushes and it's an easy lane.

VS

Azir

Medium

Has good poke with his azirw.png. Positioning is key in this lane as he can out-range you if he's good. Build a 3102.png if you're losing.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Can poke you a lot and can destroy if she catches you off guard. Has a deadly poke combo with cassiopeiaq.png and many cassiopeiae.png follow-ups. cassiopeiaw.png grounds you which disables you're only mobility spell (4.png). But, until she gets either a 3040.png OR 3027.png, she goes squish. If you get ahead in lane you can snowball. Otherwise, poke before engaging.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Whoever bursts first wins. He can jump over your veigareventhorizon.png with fizze.pngfizzr.png has a retarded hit-box. If he gets a kill on you he WILL snowball out of control. Get 3102.png ASAP and stay at range. If you catch him in a combo you win outright but be very careful with positioning.

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

Stack off his heimerdingerq.png if you can. You shouldn't get in range for him to do damage. He goes squish. You should stomp him but he might keep you pushed. I hope you enjoy stacking under tower.

VS

Kassadin

Hard

If he's not behind you by the time he gets riftwalk.png he will stomp you. Get jungle assistance after 6 but you should beat him pre-6. nulllance.png can get irritating and gives him an AP damage blocking shield on use which can block a majority of you're poke. He can riftwalk.png if you don't catch him in your stun. Build 3102.png even if he's doing average in lane. Get jungler help.

VS

Lux

Easy

Has good poke with her luxlightstrikekugel.png. She can't land her combo unless she lands her luxlightbinding.png. Dodge that and you've won. Buy 1001.png early and get a few extra pots because her poke is deadly.

VS

Morgana

Easy

She can block your stun with blackshield.png. But then again, unless she catches you in a darkbindingmissile.png she's pretty useless. Care for her 6 as soulshackles.png is a guaranteed combo and will probably result in your death. Stay behind minions and position correctly and you should win. Try and bait out her blackshield.png.

VS

Talon

Hard

Another all-in assassin. Treat the same as Zed. Rush 3157.png for armor, play safe and stack. Try and stay out of talonq.png range and rush immediately to tower if he uses talonr.png

VS

Teemo

Medium

If he pokes you. Poke him back. Harder. Stomp or be stomped if he gets the pressure on you first, he wins. If you get pressure on him, you win. Care for teemorcast.png.

VS

Vel'Koz

Easy

His poke is godlike, a good Vel'Koz will destroy you. As long as you land your stun you should be good. Positioning is key in this lane. Use minions as shields from velkozq.png, if needed, flash his velkoze.png and turn on him. Just like you, he relies on hitting his knock-up to perform his combo.

VS

Vladimir

Hard

Stay away from Vlad. He can dodge your entire combo with his vladimirsanguinepool.png. He's quite close range though, so you should be able to judge whenever he's attempting to all in you. It's either all-in or go home as he can sustain through your poke. Get jungler to help and when you trade, try and keep the pressure on him but don't put yourself out of position.

VS

Xerath

Medium

Very hard to fight. You simply can't get in range to actually hit him if the 101.png is good. He can easily poke you out of lane with xeratharcanopulsechargeup.png and has a lot of sustain with his passive. However they usually build glass cannon so he will melt if you land your combo. Dodge his abilities and stack up before engaging.

VS

Yasuo

Hard

Another difficult match-up. Can get to you really easily using yasuodashwrapper.png, can block your veigarbalefulstrike.png to prevent you from stacking. Very mobile, which counters you. His passive shield helps him survive your combo and gives him opportunity to turn the fight around. Rush 3157.png, stay back and stack. Poke before engaging and ask for jungler help.

VS

Zed

Hard

Difficult match-up. He pokes a lot with his combo and because he uses energy he can do it a lot. Very big all in potential. Rush 3157.png as first item and use while the animation for zedr.png is playing to totally avoid ult, play safe and stack. Get jungler to help if possible. DO NOT FEED.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

As long as you dodge his ziggsq.png you should win. He pushes better than you but you kill him faster. Should be easy to deal with him but careful for his pushing ability.

Matchups TL;DR Back to Top

HARD

Anyone who has mobility spells that gets them closer to you. As you lack mobility, this will be your biggest threat. Consider high mobility champs and Duelists (Champs designed for 1v1 assassination) your biggest threat. Next being tanks that can withstand your combo, you can overcome this by 3135.png

MEDIUM

Anyone with abilities that can either Out-range you to the point where you physically cannot reach them or easy to land CC. However, when you get into them, they should be a fairly easy kill.

EASY

Champs that go squish when caught by your combo. AKA all ADCs (without 3140.png). Also people who's poke is easy to dodge.

FARMING IS KEY. YOU PEAK AT LATE GAME BUT BECOME DEADLY IN MID IF STACKED WELL. ANYONE WHO GREATLY DISRUPTS YOUR STACKING EASILY, IS MEDIUM+

However even the most deadly assassins die easily to your combo without 3156.png OR 3155.png. Remember, as long as they're 33% or lower in health, you are their last thing they want to come across and even then, catching ANYONE with your veigareventhorizon.png is a death sentence.

Pro's and Con's Back to Top

To put it simply, Veigar is an underestimated champ with over-scaled abilities. Having an ultimate ability with execute damage that can one-shot from 100% HP if stacked enough and almost guarantee's a kill when at 50%. He deals HUGE damage even without his ult and late-game. Can land 3 abilities and either kill, or force a back.

PRO'S

-Outstanding burst damage, one-shot potential
-Good objective securing due to high burst damage
-Not complex, yet not completely brain-dead to play
-Scales well into the mid-late game but also has a fairly strong early
-Can do a great deal of poke
-If you get behind, it's not the end of the world
-Strong kit

CON'S
-Low Mobility, relies on summoner spells to save himself
-Squishy (Low health pool)
-Almost useless in team fights if heavily focused
-The higher the elo, the more people know how to counter him effectively (does not mean he's totally useless in higher ranks though)
-The kit is strong but not versatile
-Heavily reliant on landing veigareventhorizon.png

Thank you Back to Top

Thank you for viewing my guide. If you made it this far and it helped you understand more about 45.png, consider liking this guide. You're not only helping me, but anyone else who wants to play 45.png by giving this guide the publicity it needs to become more visible to anyone else viewing these guides. He has a busted kit and is very underestimated as a champ. Leave a comment if there's something that needs improving and i'll jump right on it. Maybe even suggest more guides for me to do and I can probably do them.
