Summoner Spells Back to Top

The only two spells you'll ever need

4.png  - Vel has no real mobility so this is mandatory for those times you need to avoid dying

3.png - I prefer exhaust over ignite because you'll never be in range to ignite the important targets and you need to make sure your carries don't die if someone comes into range of them and you.

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

Normal aggressive runes for vel

You want to poke as often as possible and as hard as possible, this setup lets you do just that.

Penetration is important, but being able to spam your abilities for your passive is even more important.

Reaching 45% CDR isn't mandatory, the mastery gives you early CDR that helps in laning phase.

Your passive is extremely powerful because it deals TRUE DAMAGE. While it may not seem like much when you proc it, if you keep triggering your passive on the same target multiple times within a short period it becomes a lot of damage.

Maxing Q is essential for the base damage and slow increase on each rank.

Landing a Q on any target can make or break a fight, learning how to land it from different angles is extremely important.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Always start these, your poke needs the ap and regen and you make gold while poking.
Either is a valid option, regular pots will give you some mana with the secret stash mastery early on but buying more pots can get expensive.

Core Items

As soon as you get your sightstone, replace your trinket with the sweeping lens.
Upgrade to frostfang first if you don't have enough money to buy a sightstone right away.
Always buy this after your sightstone, the active ability adds to your peel and catch potential.
Rush rylais to add more slow to your kit. It will make you tankier as well as give you a large boost in damage. Your ult will slow anyone by caught in it by 40%. Lucidity boots for CDR and voidstaff for more penetration.

Situational Items

Pick up liandrys as a last item if there is a troublesome tank or your team needs to poke to engage
Pick up crucible if you need to save a teammate from important CC
Pick this up if your team needs some mr. You won't always be in range to use locket on your team.
Pick this up when you need to boost the damage of someone on your team
Only take this if your team really needs the healing debuff, if not there are better options for ap or cdr. You shouldn't have mana issues mid to late game.

VS

Alistar

Easy

His kit is designed to put you and any other squishy in a bad spot.

Always try to proc your passive on him so he gets too low to engage. Your damage beats his sustain.

Don't ever get closer than a max range Q to him so he can't engage on you without his flash.

Always keep a distance from your ADC so he can't engage on both of you.

If he engages on your ADC, immediately combo the enemy ADC and ult if possible.

Make sure he uses his Q and W before you start your ult so he can't interrupt it

VS

Annie

Medium

Her kit is similar to yours, but with more up-front damage.

Always keep your distance from your ADC so you can avoid being stunned and  follow up their engage.

She will harass your ADC often so keep your distance and poke her, if you see an opening to engage on her, let your ADC know so you can both blow her up.

VS

Ashe

Easy

She has no escapes so you can easily catch her with your E.

When she hits 6 she will try to engage on you or your ADC, try to keep your distance from your ADC so either of you can follow up. Keeping 4.png up to dodge her ult is recommended.

VS

Bard

Medium

His auto attacks can deal a lot of damage and his stun can be used often.

Keep your distance from your ADC and your minions and just poke him down. His heals aren't very strong if he has to use them immediately.

His ult can stop your ult so cancel your ult early if you have to in order to avoid being CC'd.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

He can put you or your ADC in a bad spot, try to avoid being hooked.

If he misses a hook, immediately punish him by poking and proccing your passive on him or his ADC.

If your ADC is grabbed, either CC the enemy ADC or blitz as soon as you can to let your ADC escape.

VS

Brand

Easy

Like you, he is all about his poke. Your cc is easier to land and can cause him to miss his stun.

Keep your distance from your ADC so his poke can't hit both of you.

If he misses an ability, punish him before the ability comes off cooldown again.

VS

Braum

Easy

His passive can easily turn a fight around, but so can yours.

Avoid being hit with his Q. If your ADC is being chased with his passive on, CC whoever is closest to allow your ADC to escape.

His ult can interrupt your ult.

If he uses Q on anything but you, punish him with your spells.

His shield can't block your ult, only reduce the damage he takes from it.

VS

Caitlyn

Medium

Her range is her power, if you get in range for your spells then you are in range for her spells.

Her traps and escape can give her double auto attack range if they hit you, this is 250 units longer than anything you have except your ult.

If she moves close to a bush to put in a trap, she is usually in range to get poked before she sees you.

Your E can stop her E.

VS

Corki

Medium

Early on, his poke is only Q and it can deal a decent amount of damage.

Once he hits 6, he can easily poke you from just outside your Q range.

Your E stops his W.

His package can be devastating and he will most likely try to drop it on you and W away, try to land your E just behind him so it stops him from escaping.

VS

Draven

Easy

His autos hurt but his range is nothing compared to yours. Always try to combo him when he goes to catch his axes as long as you stay a safe distance away.

His E can stop your ult.

Your Q denies some of his movespeed from W.

VS

Ezreal

Medium

His astral shift makes it difficult to catch him, but if he uses it you need to punish him immediately to force a flash or have him die.

His Q is slightly longer than your Q, so try to poke him without being poked yourself.

VS

Graves

Easy

His short range makes it easy to poke him and deny him any farm. Stay out of his smokescreen so you can see his movements.

VS

Janna

Easy

She likes to stay in the back just like you. Her fully charged tornado can hit you from outside of your ult range, keep an eye out for them.

Her shield can prevent a lot of damage, bait it out with a single Q or W so you can combo her or her ADC immediately after it wears off.

Her tornado and ult can interrupt your ult.

VS

Jhin

Medium

If you aren't careful, his jhinW.png root can mean your death.

Poke him as much as you can unless he has a 40.png to shield him, then poke her instead.

His jhinR.png outranges your velkozR.png, so save it when he isn't playing in the back.

Watch his ammo, 4th shot is 100% crit chance, after he shoots it he needs to reload so try to harass him when he's reloading. A good 202.png will walk behind his support when he is reloading.

VS

Jinx

Medium

Her rockets can't reach you without putting herself in range of your spells.

Her W zap has almost as much range as your ult.

Her traps have a short range just like your E, try to land it on her if she tries to walk up to throw traps down.

VS

Kalista

Medium

Her passive makes hitting her a little difficult.

Early on she won't be able to hop very much, poke her down as often as possible.

Once she has a lot of attack speed, she will be harder to hit. Try to land a Q on her to slow her down so you can hit her with your E.

Her ult can save her support or engage on to you or your ADC. Focus her support if she uses ult so your ADC can escape.

VS

Karma

Medium

She has a lot of poke and shields.

Her tether has almost as much range as your Q, you can easily poke her down but she can just as easily engage on to you with her shield speed boost.

Avoid her ult+Q combo, it will deal a decent amount of damage.

VS

Kindred

Medium

Kindred's jump has a 2 second cooldown when wolf is active in the big circle, but a long cooldown without it.

Kindred's ult will stop anyone in it from dying until it ends. You can save your ult to use it after kindred's ult is gone or you can use it to force kindred to ult, your other spells will be up by the time your ult ends and you can kill anyone left inside.

VS

Kog'Maw

Easy

No mobility, a lot of poke and range.

Early on you can easily abuse him with your spells.

Later on, you need to land your E on him in order to deny him any damage while you or your team kills him.

VS

Leona

Easy

She can deal a decent amount of damage with her kit,

You should never be in range for her to use her blade on you unless you were hit with her ult.

If she uses blade on your ADC, immediately throw your E under your ADC to stop her from stunning and proceed to combo your spells.

If she misses her blade, punish her or her ADC before the cooldown comes back up.

VS

Lucian

Medium

His dash can get him out of your spells before they hit.

If he uses his dash, immediately punish him with your spells.

Your E can stop his ult.

Try not to stay behind minions, he can poke you with his Q through the minions.

If he ults you at max range, throw a Q out and back off so he slows and you can get away.

VS

Lulu

Medium

She will poke your ADC almost as hard as you can poke her or her ADC.

Her polymorph and her ult can stop your ult.

Her only main damage is her Q, if she uses it you can safely punish her.

She will try to combo her pix with her Q to poke from a longer range than you can, watch out where the fairy pix is to avoid it.

VS

Lux

Medium

Long range poke just like you. She deals her damage in a quicker burst compared to you.

All her spells have more range than your spells. Try to poke her when her Q is down so you can move around.

VS

Miss Fortune

Easy

She has no mobility outside of her passive movement speed boost.

She can slow you with her aoe bullets and keep you in range for her ult.

Don't ever sit closely behind minions, she will use her double up to bounce a bullet on it and hit you.

You can easily combo her any time.

VS

Morgana

Medium

Her shield denies your CC and her Q is longer than your Q.

Bait out her shield, it has a long cooldown early on.

Avoid her binding so you can punish her.

If she flash ults on to you, she will have her shield up. Just try to stay out of range or immediately combo her ADC who will most likely follow behind her.

Her ult stops your ult when it finishes.

VS

Nami

Hard

Her sustain makes it difficult to keep poking her or her ADC.

If she lands a bubble on you, you'll probably die.

If she lands a bubble on your ADC, combo the enemy ADC to prevent them from following up on the bubble.

Her bubble and ult can stop your ult.

She will engage with her ult, try to land your CC on the enemy before they can follow up.

VS

Nautilus

Medium

His kit has a lot of CC in it.

His hook and ult can stop your ult.

He will always try to follow up his hook with an auto attack to snare, immediately E him in order to buy some time to escape.

Pre 6 if he uses his hook on anyone but you, immediately combo him.

Post 6, save your ult until his ult is used.

VS

Quinn

Easy

Your E stops her vault and ult.

Her vault stops your ult.

She will try poking with spells often, if she used vault you can punish her easily.

VS

Sivir

Easy

Her shield blocks one of your spells and has a long cooldown. It does not block your passive stack.

Bait her shield out before using E on her.

Her Q is longer than your Q.

VS

Sona

Easy

She has poke and some sustain, but can't do both without running out of mana.

Her ult stops your ult.

If she comes to poke you or your ADC, you can easily punish her with your combo.

VS

Soraka

Easy

Her Q range was nerfed hard so she can't get in range to hit you without being in range of your spells.

Her aoe silence can stop your ult.

Every time she uses her starcall, you can dodge it and punish her.

Focus her over the enemy ADC so that she runs out of hp to heal.

VS

Tahm Kench

Easy

You outrange everything in his kit.

His 3 stack passive will interrupt your ult if he tongue lashes or eats you.

If your ADC is hit with his tongue, slow him down so he can't get in range of your ADC to eat them.

VS

Taric

Medium

His  stun can be strong and hard to dodge if he and his W target are close to you.

If he stuns your ADC, combo the enemy ADC before they can follow up.

His stun stops your ult.

VS

Thresh

Medium

His hook range is longer than your Q.

If he misses hook, immediately punish him without getting too close.

If he lands hook on you or your ADC, throw your E below whoever is hooked when he pulls himself in.

His hook and flay stops your ult.

If he throws his lantern out, you can time your E to CC both him and whoever took the lantern.

VS

Tristana

Easy

Her ult can stop your ult.

Her jump can get her out of your spells.

Your E can stop her jump.

She has short range early, you can easily harass her.

VS

Trundle

Medium

His pillar can stop your ult.

If he uses his pillar to engage on to you, immediately use your E to stop him and get away.

If he chases your ADC, combo him and ult to keep him off and get him low.

VS

Twitch

Easy

His invis can be problematic if he is fed. He has no other escapes.

Your ult can still hit him while he is invisible.

If he engages from stealth, immediately combo him to his death.

VS

Varus

Medium

His Q range is longer than your kit when fully charged.

His range for everything else is short and you can poke him down.

His ult can't stop your ult.

VS

Vayne

Easy

Her condemn can stop your ult.

Her short range lets you poke her all you want.

If she tumbles closer to you, avoid being near walls and just poke her down.

If she ults, wait until she comes out of her tumble stealth to E her.

VS

Zilean

Easy

Most zilean go AP, avoid bombs and poke him down.

His ult will deny your combo from killing someone.

If you bait out his ult, stop attacking whoever he used ult on and target someone else.

VS

Zyra

Easy

Her E is longer than your Q.

Her ult can stop your ult on the knockup.

She will poke with her plants, avoid roots and you can poke her down easily.

Why support Vel? Back to Top

Support vel'koz can easily do the most damage while still having the least amount of gold. His passive is what allows him to deal so much damage.

His kit has slows and knockups in it and the cooldowns are fairly short so you can spam them enough to peel as effective as some supports.

As long as you can land your spells on the enemy in lane, you can win the lane by yourself.

In lane your job is to poke as hard as you can while keeping your ADC safe in lane. If you are not constantly poking you are not doing your job.

Combos Back to Top

Vel doesn't have many combos, but your spell order dictates what will happen usually.

The standard full combo is: E->W->Q->R  This combo will proc your passive 3 times (9 stacks total) on as many targets as you can hit with every spell.

Keep them slow combo: Q -> E -> Q  This combo will have a gap in between spells, but it is mainly for keeping someone slowed and in range while your team catches them.

Instant passive proc combo: E->W  This will proc your passive almost instantly on them before the enemy can react as long as you land your E.
