Summoner Spells Back to Top

Take 4.png12.png in most cases for maximum game presence. You can use it early game to base/teleport back quickly to not lose minions after a gank or a bad trade, or to set up ganks in other lanes. Voli's Q works well for setting up tele ganks.

You can take 4.png14.png for matchups such as 36.png8.png48.png. Trades will be a lot more in your favor since you can greatly reduce their healing and can safely land your volibearw.png without them lifestealing their hp back again, but you will have to consider if it's worth the trade-off for 12.png.

Masteries Back to Top

For masteries, both 0/12/18 and 12/0/18 are optional. However, spending 18 points in resolve is easily your best choice. The resolve tree has many things that are greatly beneficial to 106.png, especially Veteran's Scars for even more early game damage, Swiftness because you're prone to getting kited and cc'd late game and Grasp of the Undying is simply great, since you're already building HP, you can convert even more of your HP into damage/lane sustain.
I take Insight instead of Perseverance because, even though the hp regen is sweet, Insight helps cover up for one of 106.png's main weak points: the lack of a gapcloser. In late game, 4.png is pretty much the only way you can engage on the enemy team without getting kited to death, so obviously having it on a shorter cooldown helps a lot.

I prefer to spend my leftover points in the cunning tree mainly because the Merciless mastery gives an extra 5% damage to your execute. Assassin is also basically a free 2% damage during the whole laning phase.

If you prefer going for Ferocity instead, take Fury, Feast, Vampirism and Oppressor. This too is fine, gives you more attack speed and oppressor makes you able to do more damage during the effect of your volibeare.png. What throws me off a bit about this mastery tree is that both Vampirism and Natural Talent aren't really important/optimal for 106.png , and you're forced to choose between them.

Usually get a point in your W first, unless you're against a champion with a lot of ranged harass early, like 13.png150.png127.png17.png. If you're against one of these, take a point in your Q first so you can trade with them at level 1. They usually do not expect you to start with flip and rush at them so early, so this gives you a nice opportunity to work on their hp bar at the start so you can easily do a lot of damage with W as soon as you hit level 2.

Max your bite first as well, since it is your primary damage ability and execute. I prefer to max Q instead of the popular E second, because of a variety of reasons:

  • E costs more mana when you upgrade it and Q doesn't
  • Q is pretty much your primary engage tool and makes it easy for you to throw the enemy into a minion wave or prevent them from running back to their turret. Running faster during your Q helps a lot and makes you a zoning monster.
  • E does have more damage scaling, but it is still not a lot of damage and the above two reasons outweigh this fact
  • The level 1 slow from E is enough to stick to most opponents
  • Q is an autoattack reset too, maxing it will give you more damage on the second attack.

Of course you can max your E second too if you prefer having a more powerful slow, but I strongly suggest Q, especially if you're facing a champion that is tough to catch. A rule of thumb you can go by: if the enemy laner has ranged harass, max Q (for example 104.png). If the enemy laner has lots of dashes and annoying disengages (see 114.png98.png58.png), it might be better to max your E so you can stick to them better.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

basic start, the hp is good for early game damage. usually start this
Start with this if you're against ranged ad poke like Gnar
Fun start, capitalize even more on your early W. Don't do this if you're against poke/harass

Core Items

Get one of these asap. Early Bami's Cinder makes you a monster in trades early game, and Sunfire provides good tanky stats and a nice constant aoe passive which also helps with Voli's slow waveclear . Don't get if you want to freeze the lane since it will autopush. when lasthitting.
Situational. Get swiftness if their cc consists mainly of slows. Often my preferred choice due to cost, anti-kite and synergizes well with Q. Ninja tabi if you're against poke, merc for hard cc/ap comps.
Standard tanky build. Order is usually: 1. Sunfire 2. Sterak 3. Visage 4. Thornmail 5. Deadman/Warmogs, depending if you need more armor or not. Dead man's plate is great for Voli since it enables you to catch mobile champions. Sterak's works well with passive so you don't get bursted through it.
If you're more experienced, build this early/mid game. You will have way better waveclear and you will be able to three shot squishies early/mid game (see videos). Don't build when you're behind or when your team lacks a good tank.
polar bear express carry build - build when you're very ahead

Situational Items

This item can be very satisfying if you're against a team with a lot of mobility like bard, singed and ezreal. Replace warmogs with this in such a situation.
Build this when you're super ahead and the enemy team isn't full of champs with cc. You'll deal an insane amount of damage, but you are very easily dealt with by kiting and cc.
Generally just don't bother with these either. Wit's end is overpriced and if you want damage, just get titanic hydra. It's much better and doesn't sacrifice your tanky/hp natured build.
Against a team that has primarily AP damage you can build this on top of your visage and you'll be pretty much unkillable.
Good item against champions reliant on crits and attack speed such as tryndamere and yasuo.
Since Voli doesn't clear waves so fast this can be effective against faster pushers. You can basically free roam and the lane will auto push.

90% of the time get 1308.png enchantment on your boots, it helps with your flash cooldown which is, once again, one of the most important things with Voli. If you're sure you don't have to flash grab people often, get alacrity.

Don't ever only stack HP. It's just a stupid thing to do as it renders you pretty much useless since you'll just get melted.

VS

Akali

Easy

stomp. care for her level 1-3 poke, just all in her when her akalismokebomb.png is down. you outdamage her in duels. also handy to buy a 2043.png on b to make ganking easier for your jungler. Put it down whenever she uses her shroud.

VS

Cho'Gath

Easy

Build some MR and dodge his rupture.png. You should be fine, just watch out for his feast.png burst, it counters your passive. Easy to set up ganks against him since he has no escape.

VS

Darius

Medium

Rather annoying matchup. He can potentially outdamage you early game and post 6 he has an ultimate to completely burst through your passive. Start 1029.png2003.png and dodge his early q poke.
If he misses his dariuscleave.png go all in and you can win the trade.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

zzzz sleepy time you can only kill him pre 6 and he has annoying %hp damage. He also outscales you. Bring 14.png and you might be able to kill him post 6. Very boring lane though...

VS

Fiora

Easy

You outdamage her in duels. When she desperately tries to hit your vitals and gets too close to your turret, flip her into it (seriously some people do this). A smart fiora will try to negate the damage from your volibearw.png with fiorariposte.png. Be careful with this. Also if you run at her with volibearq.png, wait a second before flipping her to bait her fiorariposte.png out. Of course don't duel her while her ult is up unless she's low hp.

VS

Gangplank

Medium

Annoying poke. Start 1029.png2003.png and seriously just go all in him when he tries to Q you. He can't outduel you, but you have to prevent him from slowly poking you down.

VS

Garen

Medium

This guy is a pain in the ass to kill, can free himself from your slow (you cant stick to him) and has an ultimate to counter your passive. He also regens hp after a very short while out of combat. bahhhhhhhh boring lane. You'll most likely end up both building tanky and not being able to kill each other. Go roam mid or something since he's a rather slow pusher anyways.

VS

Gnar

Hard

KITE. POKE. KITE. POKE.

DONT pick Volibear into a Gnar. If you're forced to lane against him, just play defensive and build tanky. This guy can kite you for hours, has an escape and %hp damage to top it off. A good chance to strike is when he just got out of his mega form, flash engage with your Q and quickly try to finish him off.

VS

Graves

Medium

Has annoying ranged poke, but once you manage to get a hold of him, he's dead. His escape isn't very impressive and you should be able to deal with him. Start 1029.png2003.png and rush ninja tabi to reduce his poke damage and for movement speed so you can catch him at 6. Then go for hp/armor items.

All in him once you have your ult up and his E is down, poking won't really work against him since most Graves players run warlords and get lifesteal so they can sustain very well in lane.

VS

Heimerdinger

Hard

just no

VS

Illaoi

Medium

Don't get caught by his illaoiE.png. You outdamage him in a skirmish unless there are tons of tentacles around. Be careful as he will likely jump on you with illaoiW.png and then try to illaoiE.png you. Use your minion waves to your advantage.

VS

Irelia

Easy

You outduel her. When you hit 6 just kill her with your volibearr.png.

VS

Jarvan IV

Easy

easyyyyyyyyy

just kill him when he tries to poke you with jarvanivdragonstrike.png, he has no escape anymore once he uses it. you outdamage him 1v1 anyways.

VS

Jax

Medium

his jaxcounterstrike.png counters everything in your kit. Try to bait it out, then kill him. Care for his snowballing potential, you probably won't be able to 1v1 him past min 25. Try to kill him before 6.

VS

Jayce

Medium

does this guy even exist anymore?

start 1029.png2003.png. Try to not take too much poke, play safely early. When he goes melee form, kill him.You can also flip him just at the right moment when he uses jayceE.png to take him with you, but it requires practice.

If his jayceE.png is on cooldown, flash engage and you should be able to kill him.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

Just don't be isolated and start with 1029.png2003.png because of his khazixW.png poke. He has an annoying disengage, but when its on cooldown you can flash volibearq.png engage to kill him. Squishy, so you should be able to deal with him.

VS

Lissandra

Hard

LITERALLY EVERYTHING IN HER KIT COUNTERS YOU.

You won't get ANYWHERE near a good Lissandra.

Build AP and play safe. If, for some reason her lissandraE.png is on cooldown, you can try to flash flip engage, but she'll most likely just cc you. Get 3111.png and 3065.png asap.

VS

Malphite

Medium

You'll have to kill him early game. You do more damage than him early, but he has an attack speed slow which affects your whole kit. He won't be able to kill you quickly. Try to get a few kills on him early if possible while you still can.

VS

Nasus

Medium

Kill him early game while he's vulnerable and freeze the lane. If he freezes, roam and get kills/objectives elsewhere. You have to abuse his useless early game because he WILL outscale you late.

What I do against him in lane is walk up to him and autoattack to bait his wither.png, then disengage and engage again going all in. You usually beat him early game doing this.

Oh, by the way, wither.png counters about everything in your kit.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

His passive block is a pain to deal with early game, since you cannot engage on him with volibearq.png while he has it up. Start 1029.png2003.png and don't take too much free damage from his pantheon_throw.png poke. You can't safely rely on your passive on this matchup since his E passive deals a lot of damage to low hp targets. When he jumps on you, autoattack him one time first to remove his block, then throw him backwards into your minion wave. You have a better chance to win against him post 6. If you can't win this lane, just play it safe and he won't be able to do much late without kills.

VS

Poppy

Easy

Not hard. Engage on her and stay away from the walls. Preferably don't try to dive her, she is resistant to executes and her poppyheroiccharge.png can ruin dives.

VS

Quinn

Hard

NNNNNNNNNOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO

Play safe, build armor. You can't do much, this is very annoying.

if she uses quinnE.png, you can volibeare.png her if you time it correctly, and follow up with volibearq.png. This is about what you can do. She has very annoying poke and she can safely burst you down from a distance. The blind is also killing. Just try to prevent this matchup.

VS

Rammus

Medium

boring lane.... rush sunfire, kill him early before he gets too tanky. dont trade when his shield is up.

VS

Renekton

Medium

I like to start aggressively against him ( 1055.png ) and try to all-in him before level 6. Don't let him poke you for free with renektoncleave.png since that way he will outsustain you. Autoattack and bite him everytime he gets in range. If you win early, roam and use your advantage to help your team as he clears waves faster than you do and it will be harder to kill him once he gets a sunfire. Point of attention: If you flip him behind you, walk behind him so he cannot instantly dash 2 times through you.

VS

Riven

Easy

Easy to deal with. You outdamage her in duels. Poke her with volibearw.png whenever you can, build armor and when her riventricleave.pngrivenfeint.png are on cooldown, go all in with your ult to get an easy kill on her. Freeze the lane when you're ahead, it's a guaranteed stomp.

VS

Shen

Medium

Dodge his shenvorpalstar.png or he will get a huge attack speed boost. After his rework he has a lot of %hp damage, so this matchup can be annoying for you. Try to get kills on him early and don't dive him. his passive and shenfeint.png make him really hard to finish off.

When you see him ulting one of his team members, stop it by casting volibearq.png on him.

VS

Teemo

Medium

his blindingdart.png counters almost your entire kit.

goddam devil.

your only opportunity against a decent teemo player is to flash engage when his blind is down and quickly finish the critter off. After you build swiftness boots you should have an easier time catching him. Play safe until that and don't let him poke you down.

VS

Trundle

Medium

He outsustains you. His ultimate also counters you since your build is hp focused. He can kill you in duels past 6, don't duel him while his ultimate is up or you'll just get destroyed. Also, bring your 14.png and get 3009.png for his really annoying trundleE.png slow.

If you play smart he shouldn't be able to kill you, just don't do risky stuff.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium
1029.png2003.png start, build a 3143.png to reduce his crit damage. Care with early trades, he has a lot of RNG crits. When dueling him past 6 and he's chasing you with low hp, feeling confident with his ult up, you can unexpectedly turn around and execute him with volibearw.png so he won't even have the time to cast it.

Freeze the lane when you're ahead, prevent him from snowballing. He will most likely just splitpush top late game, so bring 12.png. It's an easy lane matchup, but I put ''medium'' since late his pushing power will overpower yours by so much that he's going to cost you a lot of time at top lane.

VS

Vladimir

Easy

I find him easy even though he has ranged harass. Bring 14.png and play really aggressive. Don't take free damage from his vladimirtransfusion.png and try to bait his vladimirsanguinepool.png out. You destroy him in duels.

VS

Wukong

Easy

Usually start 1029.png2003.png since most Wukong players will start with a regeneration item too. This shouldn't be a hard lane, you beat him in duels. When he uses monkeykingdecoy.png, you can use volibeare.png and you'll know if it's the real one or not depending on if it gets feared. When your ult is up, just destroy him. Nothing more to it.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Has a lot of mobility and can be hard to stick to. Care for his free poke early with yasuoQ.png and start cloth armor+potions. If you flip him behind you, walk behind him again so he cannot freely dash through you to escape. You outdamage him in skirmishes once you hit level 6, so try to pick a fight with him then. 3022.png is a very effective item to buy against yasuo.

Phases of the game Back to Top

Laning phase/early game

The laning phase is where Volibear is in his prime. You do a lot of damage with your volibearw.png and you can beat almost any other melee duelist if you play it right. Your primary focus in the laning phase is to poke the enemy laner with W, lower and lower  until you can all in him/her and land a kill with your execute. Engage in trades early game, you'll most likely win them. Try to get as much damage on the enemy as possible before landing your W, then go back and repeat. Generally you should have an aggressive playstyle to utilize Volibear. Be aware of the early game domination you can have. If you're more of a passive player who tends to play it safe, the champion is probably not for you.

When you're winning your lane, Volibear can very easily freeze lanes with volibeare.png. If there's a huge minion wave about to walk under your turret, E them and wait for your minions to arrive. This way you can freeze for a long time and the enemy laner will become severely underfarmed.

Another option is to hard push the lane (of course ward the river) and hit the enemy turret to stack your volibearw.png. When the enemy attacks you in retaliation, suddenly dive him, ult and execute. People usually don't expect that, but Volibear is good at it, especially since your passive can make you escape alive. Don't do this when the opponent has a lot of CC to snare you under his turret, though.

Against harder matchups/ranged harass it's not very hard to turtle it out under your turret as Volibear. Missing a few CS is better than going 0/5 in lane, since you'll miss out on experience AND give the enemy laner gold. When facing such a situation, build tanky, wait for the lane to push, lasthit under turret and wait for your jungler to set up a gank with your volibearq.png

You can teleport/gank botlane with Volibear, make sure they have a ward in the second bush so the enemy has less time to react when pushed. When doing this, make sure your lane is pushed out correctly so you won't risk losing a turret and failing your gank.

Mid game

Your role here is to help securing the objectives for your team while also making sure your top lane doesn't get destroyed by split pushers. Your moves kind of depend on the enemy top laner:
  1. If you're facing someone who only splitpushes, stay top lane and tell your team to ward near teamfights so you can 12.png at the appropriate time. This will suprise the enemy team when they've just engaged on 4. You might lose a top tower in the process, but it's worth winning a teamfight for.
  2. If you're getting destroyed and dived by their jungler, roam. If you stay top you'll just die over and over again. Try to get kills for bot/mid and take a dragon, then return with teleport to defend your tower.
  3. If you're winning your lane hard, also roam to mid lane and participate in teamfights. Voli still has a lot of damage and teamfight potential in mid-game, so most of the time you want to utilize this and get your team some kills.
When your team is behind, roam to the mid lane if you can and try to get a successful gank off. Of course help securing dragons and try to get the rift walker after a successful gank.

In case you built a 3748.png, you can split push top lane as well, with this item you have insane dueling potential so anyone who pays a visit to defend their top lane will likely get destroyed in an 1v1. Be careful with multiple people coming to your lane though since you don't have anything to quickly retreat.

Late game

Late game is where your dueling potential falls off and you'll have to mostly group up. If the enemy team has a lot of engages and your carries are fed, stay with them and flip their front line off your carries. Many Volibear players make the mistake of running into the enemy team face first and trying to go for their back line. DO NOT do this as you'll just get poked, slowed and kited to death. If you have a champion with an engage in your team such as 89.png, let them engage instead and you can capitalize on it. If one of the enemy squishies makes a wrong move and overextends, you can suprise them by using 4.png and flipping them towards your team with volibearq.png.

Tips & Tricks Back to Top

Titanic Hydra combo

If you built a 3748.png, you can reset your autoattacks twice with this combo and then land your volibearw.png. This combo can deal insane damage and potentially 3shot squishies, especially in combination with your volibearr.png

Last hitting caster minions under turret

With Voli's volibeare.png you can do a nifty trick which will make last hitting those pesky caster minions a lot easier. Cast it once on a wave and they'll have just enough hp left for you to last hit them after one turret shot.

Chasing your enemies

When chasing, click the ground to walk forward in between your autoattacks to keep up the pace. Since Voli doesn't have a lot of sticking power you'll have to do this or they will outrun you in the longer term.

About Back to Top

Hello and welcome to my Volibear top guide.

Volibear has been my main champion since I was around level 20 in Season 2. Ever since I bought him, I've loved playing him. I have reached diamond for three consecutive seasons (S3, S4, S5) playing exclusively Volibear on an account. I play Volibear everywhere (except adc of course), even if jungle and top were taken in the old queue system, I would play Voli support and even mid.

Over the course of all these seasons, I think I have played 1000+ total Volibear games, so naturally, I know all the ins and outs of the champion. In this guide I will be trying to bring that knowledge over to the readers in an efficient way. This means I won't be tossing you a 100 page long book, but instead I will try to cover as much information as possible while still keeping it understandable and easy to read.

Let's start with some pros and cons. Why would you (not) pick Volibear in the top lane?

Pros:
  • Excellent early game duelist. Can beat most other melee duelists in lane.
  • Building HP also gives you damage. Who doesn't want to build both tankiness and damage at the same time?
  • A very fun passive, you can set up cheesy baits with it.
  • Can easily execute squishies, the W deals a great amount of damage, especially mid game.
  • Can set up nice combos with several other champions, think of 106.png Q + 157.png R.
  • Not hard to pick up (but requires more experience to master, especially your role in teamfights.)
  • Favorable masteries in S6.
  • A fluffy polar bear!

Cons:
  • Very prone to kiting, %hp damage, attack speed slows and ranged harass.
  • Has no gapcloser, and as a result, is preferably not picked in a team composition without an engage. People often don't know this, which may lose you games.
  • Ignite nullifies your passive.
  • Can't stick very well to mobile champions.
  • Has a weaker late game in comparison to other bruisers/tanks.

In this regard, Volibear top can be seen as a situational pick. He excels against other melee duelists such as 62.png and 114.png, but is prone to ranged harass, kiting, %hp damage and attack speed slows. These things can be found in a wide variety of champions' kits, so you may not always have an easy time in the top lane.

I hope you'll enjoy reading and applying my guide! Feel free to leave a comment if you liked it. If people enjoy this guide, I might make a Volibear jungle guide too.
