Summoner Spells Back to Top

4.png is always taken on Xerath support for playmaking with your E+Flash and general safety. You want to be running 4.png14.png against teamcomps with little to no dive-threat and 4.png3.png against teamcomps with heavy divethreats (such as 157.png59.png,114.png etc.) or vs. a high pressure bot (like if you're playing 101.png+202.png vs. 143.png+51.png).

Basically ignite for early kill pressure and if you don't need exhaust lategame, and exhaust if you don't have a lot of all-in potential earlygame and need it for the later stages of the game (I mostly run exhaust currently though due to the jungle meta with assassins).

New Runes Back to Top

Solid over all page for Xerath Support right now. Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32 gives you a lot of free damage throughout the game due to the easiness of Xerath proccing it with his maxrange xeratharcanopulsechargeup.png. Manaflow Band gives you a lot of mana sustain that allows you to spam out even more poke. Absolute Focus is strong on longer range champions due to you not being able to get poked as easily, and gives you free stats throughout the game which is never bad. Scorch increases your poke by a lot and feels really good throughout the game.

The domination tree is the 2nd tree that offers you the most. Zombie Ward and Cheap Shot is the strongest choices you have available. Zombie Ward over all increases your vision by a lot and Cheap Shot provides you with some free damage every time you hit a CC'd target (easy to get damage from this rune from your xerathmagespear.png).

Masteries Back to Top

You want to run Thunderlords for insane burst and Fresh Blood in the Ferocity tree for extra damage with your  E-W-Q+Auto combo. I put 1 point in Vampirism to get some free sustain with Lifesteal+Spellvamp when pushing waves/poking enemies (not a lot but better than a bit more AP which you can get from items). I run Precision instead of Intelligence in the Cunning tree due to MagicPen being very valuable on Xerath (both are viable though).

You want to be maxing your xeratharcanopulsechargeup.png first as it's your primary source of damage. You max your xeratharcanebarrage2.png second as it's base damage and slow from the inner circle increases drastically with ranks. You lastly max your xerathmagespear.png and of course pick up your ult xerathlocusofpower2.png whenever you can (levels 6,11,16).

Situational Items

If you plan on not going morello
If the enemy comp has 3x or more AP
If the enemies have 2x or more heavy dive threats that target you

You want to rush a 3098.png as soon as possible, with 2049.png and 3020.png (3158.png if you plan on not building Morellonomicon), and complete your 2301.png after that. Then you have the option of going either Morello/Rylais/Liandry's Torment. You want to run Liandry's if the enemy team has 2 or more tanks, Morello if they only have 1 tank and rest squishies and Rylais if you need extra catch potential/better peel for your carries. After you've completed 2 of these items you want to build a 3135.png and then build the 3rd item you didn't build from the previous section. Abyssal/Zhonyas should only be bought if extremely necessary as none of those items are really great on Xerath.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

This lane is pretty simple for you if you can survive the early (1-4) levels. He has higher all-in potential than you during every stage of the game, but you always have your xerathmagespear.png to stop any all-in attempt he wants to make with his overdrive.pngrocketgrab.png combo. Try to play aggressive on him with your abilities, but never overextend to put you in danger of a rocketgrab.png as it means both your summoners or death. If you can play the poke and range war, Blitzcrank will cry himself to sleep as he never can get close to you if you position properly.

VS

Braum

Hard

This is an extremely difficult matchup for Xerath as Braum is too tanky for you throughout the entire game, and can assist in helping his ADC by braume.png'ing most of your damage. In this matchup you can try putting a few more points in your xeratharcanebarrage2.png early as it's not able to be blocked by him. Try to roam a lot in this matchup, as Braum has a hard time pushing the lane with his ADC unlike you. Focus on getting objectives and not fighting the Braum as much as possible and it's doable, but it's very tricky because if he lands one braumq.png you're always in big danger. Play careful and calculated.

VS

Janna

Easy

This matchup, along with Zyra, is extremely easy for you. She has 0 response to any trades you do with her, so you want to abuse it as much as possible by baiting her eyeofthestorm.png as you are charging your xeratharcanopulsechargeup.png to make her use it on herself or her ADC, and then you Q the other. You also have free damage on her when she is using reapthewhirlwind.png with your xerathlocusofpower2.png throughout the game, and an easy way of interrupting it with your xerathmagespear.png if you are in range. Play smart, don't play greedy and you win this matchup easily.

VS

Karma

Easy

This matchup is more depending on the ADCs than the supports, but in an isolated world this matchup is pretty easy for Xerath support to handle as well. You always have the range advantage, much like in the Zyra matchup, and you can choose what trades you want to take. One thing you have to be careful of though is using your xerathmagespear.pngxeratharcanebarrage2.pngxeratharcanopulsechargeup.png combo to poke and then being turned on by her+enemy jungler with her karmaspiritbind.png as you have no possible chance of escaping after your xerathmagespear.png is on CD. Look for more aggressive autoattacks in this matchup than in the Zyra one, as you get a lot of free mana from your passive (xerathpassive.png) from this. In the mid/lategame it's a bit harder for you to kill her alone, and you want to focus on out-rotating her team and getting catches on the ADC more than her as she is slippery with her selfcast karmasolkimshield.png

VS

Lulu

Easy

This matchup is really similar to the Zyra one. You always have the range advantage vs. Lulu and want to abuse it as much as possible by poking her down with xerathmagespear.pngxeratharcanebarrage2.pngxeratharcanopulsechargeup.png combos. Be careful to not overextend after your abilities are on cooldown as Lulu has a lot more autoattack damage than you. Other than that just look for aggressive trades when you have your spells up and this is a matchup you will win for sure.

VS

Malzahar

Hard

This is the matchup you never want to play as Xerath. He has decent poke range with his malzaharq.png and malzaharw.png's, you have no easy way of killing the malzaharw.png and he has free kills on you with his malzaharr.png. His passive spellshield is also extremely annoying as you can't open up with your xerathmagespear.png which makes you lose damage in every trade combo. I would advice to never pick Xerath support in to Malzahar unless you want to get destroyed brutally, he basically counters you throughout the game.

VS

Morgana

Hard

This, apart from Malzahar, is your hardest matchup. She has an easy time to block your xerathmagespear.png with her blackshield.png throughout the game, and an easy way to darkbindingmissile.png you as you are in your xeratharcanebarrage2.pngxeratharcanopulsechargeup.png animations. Try your best in the lane to outrange her and just poke and save your xerathmagespear.png until you know she has used her spellshield. In mid/lategame you want to be even more careful as one darkbindingmissile.png is assured death. Play smart and poke her out of lane, you lose any all-ins.

VS

Nami

Medium

This matchup is easy/medium depending on the skill of the Nami. If she is good enough to namiq.png you as you are mid-animation on your xeratharcanebarrage2.pngxeratharcanopulsechargeup.png combo, or plays aggressively with autoattacks+dodge your spells it can be tricky as Xerath as she also has sustain with her namiw.png. Look to feel out her skill in the earlygame with your xeratharcanebarrage2.pngxeratharcanopulsechargeup.png+Auto combo and she if she responds correctly with an namiq.png or not. If she doesn't do it immediately you can play a bit more aggressive with your xerathmagespear.png and autoattacks on her. In mid/lategame you want to make sure you are not in vision when ulting as she can cancel it easily with her namir.png from afar. Play to poke more than 1 person in the enemy team, as she can only heal one at a time. If you catch her with an xerathmagespear.png she is almost guaranteed dead from your teams followup.

VS

Thresh

Medium

This matchup, much like the Nami one, depends on the skill of the Thresh and how potent he is with using his threshq.png during your xeratharcanebarrage2.pngxeratharcanopulsechargeup.png animations. If he is able to consistently land hooks on you during your animations, it's a very tricky lane as he is tanky enough to soak a lot more damage than you. If you can avoid getting hooked by either outranging+poking him or simply side-stepping, this lane can be very fun for you as Xerath. It becomes a bit more scary in the mid/lategame however as he most probably has a 3190.png and more tanky items that makes it really hard for you to punish him, while you're super squishy and die from one hook of him. You want to look more for the enemy ADC/Mid in mid/late, and also be careful of his threshq.png range as it's literally a death sentence for you as a squishy Xerath.

VS

Zyra

Easy

I started practicing Xerath as a counter to Zyra due to him outranging, outpoking and out-all inning her from a safer range. This experiment worked extremely well, and I've yet to have a tough time against a Zyra lane. You want to start poking her as early on as possible with your xeratharcanopulsechargeup.png, only use your autos on her/her ADC if you are sure you won't get zyrae.png and turned on quickly. When you get all your Q+W and E, the fun begins. Constantly look for opportunities to xerathmagespear.png her when she is looking to poke, and follow it up with a xeratharcanebarrage2.pngxeratharcanopulsechargeup.png+auto(if possible) and half her health is gone. I can't stress enough that you need to use your range advantage in this matchup to be successful, don't overextend for long trades when you can simply outrange her with your basic spells. In the mid/lategame you almost oneshot her with an E+W+Q+R combo from full health, and when you get 3116.png it's extremely easy to engage on her from a long range with followup from your team.

Why Xerath support? Back to Top

If you're checking out this guide, you're probably curious. Why play 101.png support? The answer is quite simple, he counters many of the mage supports currently seen in the botlane (apart from Malzahar). He has higher range, safer damage and better all-in than most of them. I started experimenting with Xerath as a counterpick to Zyra, and have found great success. I'm currently having a 60% winrate on him in SoloQ, mostly picked against Zyra, Karma, Nami and Lulu. I wouldn't advice blind picking Xerath support, as any of his counters render him pretty useless in lane until he gets items and he is not a big asset to the team due to his lackluster peel/damage if behind.

Here is the last few Xerath support games I've played around 400LP on EUW.
PcnZJmq.png

How does he work as a support? Back to Top

101.png support works as a combo-mage support with long range, much like 63.png but with higher range. He does a lot of damage with his xerathmagespear.pngxeratharcanebarrage2.pngxeratharcanopulsechargeup.png combo, proccing Thunderlords' and guaranteeing the W and Q to hit if the E lands. Here are some clips from when I played against Zven and Mithy (credit goes to Zvens stream: https://www.twitch.tv/zvanillan) that showcases the strenghts of Xerath support.

In this first clip you can see how I abuse the long range of Xerath to poke Zven and Mithy to 50% hp with the help of Caitlyn. I then abuse the bush to get my xerathmagespear.png on Mithy without him having the time to react. Because I did so much damage to both before dying my Caitlyn was able to kill Zven as well for the 2 for 1 trade as well as being able to push the lane.

In this second clip you can see the sheer strength of Xerath and his setup+damage. Stunning Zven with an almost max-range xerathmagespear.png  gives my Caitlyn enough time to put a trap on him to combo him from 100-0 (the GP ult only added 140 damage, and Zven died to a 280 Headshot from Caitlyn+my auto in the air whilst being 159HP which made the GP ult useless in this case). I follow up the play with an xerathmagespear.png->4.png combo to dodge the brandw.png from Mithy whilst facing away from him to make the E harder to react to (Xerath starts his E animation towards where he is facing, not the location the spell goes to). I follow it up with a xeratharcanebarrage2.pngxeratharcanopulsechargeup.png+auto combo to give my Caitlyn another kill and make sure we can get the first tower gold quickly.
