Summoner Spells Back to Top

Take ignite 99% of the time. Ignite is just too good to pass up on Zed. Ignite puts kill pressure on your opponent and it is basically a free damaging spell that your opponent cannot do anything about. Always remember to ignite at the beginning of a fight to take advantage of the grievous wounds that ignite offers. I always ignite mid-ult to guarantee that there is reduced healing for my opponent. What I mean by mid ult is the time it takes for you to dash to your target after you press r, you can ignite them while invulnerable.

Teleport is another option that you can go for, however it is not something I do often/recommend. I would only take teleport in instances where I know I will get bullied out of lane or if I know it will be difficult to kill the enemy mid laner. For instance, if I was against a 57.png or 78.png mid or something weird and unconventional then I would probably take teleport. Otherwise, just go ignite against typical squishier mid laners, such as 61.png or 103.png.

Always take flash. Best summoner spell in the game. Flash can be used defensively to escape or offensively to finish off a low opponent. The possibilities are endless.
Some would argue that Zed has a built in flash with his W and that he already has enough mobility. I disagree and think flash is a staple spell for all champions, exceptions being 120.png or someone that relies on movement speed.

Masteries Back to Top

12/18/0

Ok So I will be comparing the masteries from left to right, top to bottom and explain my reasoning for these rune pages. However, to start off, I will be talking about my Keystone choice because it is the most important.

Thunderlord's Decree vs. StormRaiders Surge vs. WindSpeaker's Blessng: Thunderlord's Decree. I do not think I even have to mention why you don't go Windspeaker's blessing, so I will skip that. If you really don't understand why I didn't pick it, then you should probably get to level 30 first because you are most likely an unexperienced player. Anyways, Thunderlord's gives early lane dominance compared to Stormraider's surge. Thunderlord's is just outright good on Zed because it adds burst to your kit and it is easy to proc. Stormraider's surge is better late game, where you can destroy someone and then run away for an escape. The movement buff and slow resistance is significant, but it will not add an extra supposed ~370 damage in the late game. Don't get me wrong, stormraider's surge is good, but I believe it is outclassed by Thunderlord's.
Fervor and Warlord's Bloodlust are not very good on Zed because Zed is not an auto attacking champion, and his spells are not on a super short cooldown to make the ability portion of fervor worth it.
DeathfireTouch: Good, but outclassed by thunderlord's. This keystone does damage over time, but zed needs burst (thunderlords), not damage over time.

Sorcery Vs. Fervor: I choose Sorcery due to the fact that Zed is an AD CASTER ASSASSIN. He relies on his abilities to do his damage for him, except for maybe in the late game. Zed is not an auto attacker so I feel that the attack speed would be wasted.

Double Edged Sword Vs. Feast Vs. Expose Weakness: Double Edged Sword. I'll start by ruling out Expose Weakness. Zed's aoe potential is not very high, so your allies cannot benefit that much from it. Zed is a single target assassin, so he will use all his abilities on one target most of the time. Your allies are not needed to do an extra 3% damage on a target that you have already basically killed. Anyways, a constant 3% damage increase from double edged sword is simply better than 20 health every 30 seconds (feast). Although you are a melee champion and against a mid laner that is usually ranged that can harass you, you can just play safe and farm with zedQ.png. That way, you can prevent a lot of harass so extra health regeneration is not that much needed compared to another melee mid laner such as 105.png or 91.png. In addition, feast just falls out hard after you get lifesteal. It is only for the early game, while the damage increase for double edged sword is permanent. I opt for Double edged sword. However, I feel as if this is completely optional and up to personal preference.

Vampirism vs. Natural Talent: Vampirism. The bonus lifesteal and spell vamp from vampirism is better than natural talent. First of all, natural talent gives AP, which is completely wasted on Zed, who has no AP scaling whatsoever. So, if you remove that AP part, what does natural talent offer? A whopping 10 AD at level 18. Wow. Definitely worth. JK. Now, for instance late game, Your build should give you around 400-500 AD (depending on the items you get). If we have 2% extra lifesteal, one auto attack should replenish 8-10 hp every auto attack in addition to your built in lifesteal from death's dance, which is great.

Oppressor vs. Bounty Hunter: Oppressor. I will explain my choice now, but once again, this is optional and it depends on your play style. Oppressor is better for the early game and it provides a consistent 2.5% extra damage because of your zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.png combo slow. This means that right away, at level 3, you have an additional 2.5% extra damage. On the other hand, bounty hunter takes time to develop as you need to roam constantly and kill at least 3 unique opponents for better stats than Oppressor. You can argue that oppressor needs a target that is already cced, while bounty hunter does not, but the chances of you being the only cc on your team is unlikely. In addition, you usually want to start off a fight slowing your target with zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.png . Again, this is personal preference. I want to win the early game and win the lane so I get Oppressor. Bounty Hunter is for late game and takes time to develop, as you have to roam and kill at least 3 different enemy champions for a better bonus.

Now onto the Cunning Skill Tree

Wanderer Vs. Savagery: Savagery. I choose savagery because you need to be farming with Q's whenever you are low in lane. The 5 extra damage is always helpful last hitting too. Due to the recent patch 6.10 nerfs to Zed's q (nerfing the initial damage), your shurikens do less damage, so savagery makes sure you get that cs. Wanderer is also good on Zed because it provides mobility, but I personally prefer the tiny extra damage on minions to prevent any minion gold from slipping through me. Optional mastery.

Runic Affinity vs. Secret Stash vs. Assassin: Assassin. Zed is an assassin. Assassin just fits zed's playstyle and should not be passed up. Secret stash is not worth it on zed because the mana portion is useless. Runic affinity is not that good because you are not a jungler. Maybe if your jungler gives you blue buff then runic affinity would be put to use, but zed does not desperately need blue buff.

Merciless vs. Meditation: Merciless. I don't really need to explain this do I? Zed uses energy, not mana. Meditation is legit useless. Also merciless just synergizes extremely well with your ultimate and kit in general, so yeah.

Dangerous Game vs. Bandit: Dangerous Game. Do I have to explain this one too? You are a solo mid laner, bandit is useless. Also, dangerous game is good early when you are fighting the enemy mid laner and it is a close fight. Let's say they ignite you before their death and you are about to die, but you level up from a minion nearby. Boom. You just restored 2.5% of your missing health, saving you from ignite.

Precision vs. Intelligence: Precision. Precision is good on Zed because it gives bonus armor penetration. No questions asked. Intelligence is not THAT good on Zed because Zed from my build already has max cdr. There is no need for more, because with even 35% cdr, Zed can throw 2 shurikens with 1 shadow. In my opinion, the armor penetration is just greater than the 5% cdr.

So those are my mastery choices.

Pretty standard Zed ability skill order. Against a ranged mid laner, get the zedW.pngw level 2 for mobility and maybe poke. Against melee mids, go zedE.pnge level 2 and go for a level 2 cheese. Using your qzedQ.png and e zedE.png with an auto attack will prob thunderlords and probably put them at half health right away at level 2. If they continue to fight you, you can probably just auto attack them to death and ignite14.png them.

Passive: zedpassive.png Contempt for the Weak: One of the best passives in the game in my opinion. Makes last hitting extremely easy and does percent max health as magic damage to enemies under half health. This passive is great because it does magic damage. Most people build armor to counter Zed, but this is your only source of magic damage and it does good damage. At max level, it does 10% of your opponents max hp as magic damage.

Q: zedQ.png Razor Shuriken: Standard bread and butter ability for Zed. Does good damage and can pass through units. Max immediately (prioritize ult however). The shuriken's travel speed is not fast, but it is not slow either. Make sure to hit these in order to do your full damage. Don't rush using this ability after you use your ultimate. Be patient and wait for the perfect time to throw out your shuriken. Many amateur Zed players just instantly use Q to get damage off and then swap back with zedR.png r. Be patient and make sure you hit your shuriken; it is your main source of damage. During the laning phase, use this ability to safely get cs that is out of melee range. Also, use it to harass your opponent when they are in the middle of their auto attack animation.

W: zedW.pngLiving Shadow:  Great mobility and has A LOT of damage potential. Do not abuse this ability too many times in the early game, it is your ONLY escape after flash. Most enemy mid laners will bait out your shadow and then the jungler will come gank and you will be forced to flash. Do not use this ability many times until level 5. Once level 5, you can freely use this to get your opponent lower and lower to set up a kill with your ultimate. Remember, in the laning phase, this ability has about a 20 second cooldown. After using it, try to play safe in case of a gank. At full build (40% cdr) , you can use your shadow and then your e and q TWICE with the same shadow before it disappears. Always keep track of your shadow and be careful when you swap to avoid any kind of unnecessary damage.

E: zedE.png Shadow Slash: Typical area of effect ability. The scaling is pretty ok and does not fall off late game. Using this with your w and having the shadow hit will make your opponent slowed, which is a good time to go in because of the bonus damage from your mastery, Oppressor. This ability does not affect your auto attack timer, so you can use this in conjuction simultaneously with your auto attack. I try to use ezedE.png a split second before auto attack because your opponent might be hit by your e under the 50% max health mark, and your passive will trigger from the auto attack and deal good damage.

R: zedR.png Death Mark: The most anti-fun and tilting ultimate of the game (in my opinion). This ability basially says "you are going to die now". There is not much to say about this ability other than the fact that it can be used to dodge incoming champion abilties. For instance, if a Brand ults you brandwildfire.png, you can ult him back and his pyroclasm(ult) will be negated. Your ultimate makes you invulnerable for a very short time, similar to Fizz's E fizzjump.png. Always keep a close eye on your starting point shadow and when to reactivate. Sometimes, enemies predict the reactivation so they stay near your shadow. You have to keep an eye on it to know when to swap back or not. It is instinct for most Zeds to swap immediately after they kill their opponent, but sometimes other enemies might be waiting (such as a jungler). One cool thing about Zed's ultimate is that if your target is going to die by Death Mark, a small shuriken will appear over their head. This is nice because it lets you know when you should reactivate or not. I attached an image with the shuriken in case you do not know what I am talking about. It will be on the bottom of the guide.
One tip with your ult is to wait until your enemy is about to use their escape, such as 4.png or like a 103.png's ult ahritumble.png and then you use yours right before they use their escape. It takes practice and timing to do this, and after your ult you will arrive with them to where they escaped to.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Usual start
    Against passive mid laner

Core Items

TRY TO back with 1400 gold or some sort like that to complete serrated dirk and have enough for boots and potions
Don't forget to ward. Get one of these everytime you back. Warding and having vision = more vision on out of position enemies = more kills for you.
    Core items after youmuu's
    Example End Game Build.
    against heavy ad team
    heavy ap

Situational Items

right after youmuus if fed ap or heavy ap team
    Defensive Options
    SELL BOOTS
    REPLACEABLES
    Why not

Starting Items: Usually start Longsword1036.png  + 3x Health Potions2003.png + Yellow Trinket*3340.png

Core: Get serrated Dirk** 3134.png before Caulfield's Warhammer 3133.png and then finish Youmuu's.
If against a heavy AP team or a fed AP champion, get maw of malmortius second item.

Core continuted: I usually get Death's dance second after Youmuu's. Usually get the 1053.png vampiric scepter as the first component because you need sustain. Finish your Merc Treads 3111.png sometime in between Death's dance, depending on how much cc their team has. After Death's dance, go into Black Cleaver, starting with the Phage 3044.png, as it gives more tankiness and a movement speed bonus. Next is Maw of Malmortius. If their team has no AP, then don't get this item and swap it in with one of my replaceables.

Defensive Item: Always get one defensive item. Look at the enemy first, though. Does their team have a lot of burst damage? Get GA 3026.png. A lot of single target CC? Get banshees 3102.png. Heavy AD? Dead man's plate 3742.png. It all depends upon the situation. I get GA most of the time.

End Game Build: 3142.png3111.png3812.png3071.png3156.png3026.png With this build, you manage to cap out at exactly 40% cdr, so blue buff is not needed if you already have an ally that needs blue buff. It adds up to 30 armor penetratrion with additional armor reduction from black cleaver, it gives spell vamp and lifesteal as well. It also provides a bit of tankiness so you do not get instantly blown up with GA and Merc Treads. Also remember to always buy 2140.png for the added stats.

Sell Boots and Buy 3147.png Duskblade of Draktharr. If the game goes on long enough and you have enough gold to buy it, sell your boots and buy Duskblade. The passive movement speed bonus from this item makes up for loss of speed from boots. In addition, it gives armor penetration and good AD. I do not like this item very much early on Zed because of the fact that if you auto attack a champion for instance, by accident, the active will trigger and you have to wait another 2 minutes for it to come up again.

Replaceables:

These items are OK on Zed, but I do not prefer it. I used to think ravenous was good for farming but the stats get outclassed by for instance, Death's dance. Death's dance gives cdr in addition to the same damage offered by this item. Bloodthirster is not that good on Zed because Zed will not be auto attacking very much in the game. There is no built in attack speed in this build either. Lord Dominik's is a solid option against 3+ tanks.

Bloodthirster 3072.png- Good if their team has a lot of midrange bruisers who will be dueling you constantly.

Lord Dominik's Regards3036.png- Good if their team has a lot of tanks.

Ravenous Hydra3074.png- Good if very very ahead or very very behind. It helps with csing and gives your team aoe. Good if your team lacks any aoe of some sort, but I think this item just gets outclassed in almost every way. It's an OK buy, not great.

*Do I upgrade trinket to blue trinket 3363.pngat level 9?
I personally keep the yellow trinket because it is a solid invisible ward. It's great for making picks, but again, this is completely optional and based on personal preference.

**Why Serrated Dirk Before Caulfield's Warhammer?
The armor penetration early is more important than the cooldown reduction in my opinion. However, this is all optional and you can freely choose.

VS

Ahri

Medium

Pretty OK matchup. Depends on how well you can dodge each other's abilities. Pre-6, Ahri should be able to outpoke you can do good damage. However, as you get closer to level 6, retaliate and get more aggressive by using your wzedW.png->ezedE.png->qzedQ.png combo and try to proc thunderlord's decree without taking much damage. When she is lower than 75% hp, you should be able to kill her assuming you play everything right. When you ult her, she will 99% of the time instantly use her first charge of her ultimateahritumble.png to go backwards and try to charm youahriseduce.png. Just ignite her mid-ult and use zedE.pnge right away. Then wait for her to dash to use zedQ.pngq. Don't be afraid to flash to chase her when she ults because you can just reactivate zedR.pngr anyways. Overall, if you are an experienced Zed player, Ahri should be no problem. Do not get poked down pre-6 and do not get charmed when you ult. Getting charmed usually results in the death of you or a failed kill.

VS

Akali

Easy

Akali is an easy matchup for Zed. Just kill her level 2 with zedQ.png and zedE.png combined with auto attacks. She should not be able to fight you at level 2. Do not get auto attacked by the second proc of her  akalimota.png which will do a lot of damage to you. Wait off her akalimota.png mark and then you can engage on her or wait for her to use it on a minion for csing. Play very aggressive and you should win the lane. After level 6, buy a pink ward and for her akalismokebomb.png and she will be no problemo.

VS

Anivia

Medium

Medium matchup. She will be hard to kill early because of her stupid passive egg thing aniviapassive.pngwhich will prevent you from getting an early kill. She does a shitton of damage if she stuns you with q flashfrost.png and then e frostbite.png for the bonus frostbite damage. Play safe until level 3 and then you can go aggressive. Always note that her egg will be up so it is not worth tower diving between levels 1-6, unless you have your jungler with you.

Both of you do a good amount of damage so do not underestimate her. Respect the amount of damage she does and do not get hit by that flashfrost.png, it might end up killing you. She is immobile which will make post level 6 easy to kill when her egg is down.

VS

Annie

Hard

Hard Match-up. Annie has almost no counterplay. She just instantly kills you. Play safe in lane and wait for ganks pre-6. She will out harass you and she can farm easily with her q disintegrate.png

Whenever you use your ultimate on her, thinking there is an easy kill, she will most likely just 100-0 you and stun you before you can even do any damage. I recommend buying 3155.png as first item.

If you get ahead in lane however, for example from a jungler gank level 3, then you should use this to your advantage and go super aggressive. If ahead, you will win. If behind or even in lane, you will most likely lose. Just remember to go in when her stun is down.

VS

Aurelion Sol

Easy

Super easy match-up. Not a lot of explaining to do. Go aggressive level 3 and you should be able to kill him. His qaurelionsolQ.png is very easy to sidestep and once he uses it, you can go right ahead in and fight. Stay inside his circle of stars that surround him and he cant damage you.

If you use your ultimate zedR.png on him, he will most likely use his ult too aurelionsolR.png. I would put a shadow behind him right after you ult and then when he knocks you back with his ult, you can just swap back with your zedW.png and get back into the fight again. Overall, easy matchup as long as you can dodge his stuns.

VS

Azir

Easy

Similar to aurelion sol, however he has better poke and lane dominance. Play safe until level 3 because he will poke you down with his soldiers azirW.png

Wait for him to use his azirQ.png, and then go right in. It will be hard for him to escape. Try to be in front of where he will run to stop his dash azirE.png. If you just follow all of this, he won't be able to fight you.

When using your ult, follow the same as Aurelion Sol. Put a zedW.png behind Azir right when you ult so that when he uses his azirR.png, you can swap right in and beat him down.

VS

Brand

Easy

Immobile mid laner = easy kill. Brand is scary up until around level 3. He will most likely poke you down with his brandfissure.png, and this ability hurts A LOT. It is ok to miss 1 cs or 2 to avoid getting hit by this.

Post level 3, you should be able to just harass him with zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.png, but do not swap in and auto attack because he will stun you and get a full combo off. Wait until he is under 75% hp to go in. When you ult zedR.png, he will probably try to stun you right away or flash, so use your flash as well strategically. Either use it to dodge his stun or to chase him. Brand does do a lot of damage so when he uses his ult brandwildfire.png try to stay away from minions. Also note that if he ults you, you can use yours to negate it, because your ult makes you invulnerable.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Medium Matchup, although Cass mid is very uncommon as of right now. She will poke you down HARD pre-6 so I suggest playing passive until then. Never get too close to Cass under 50% hp as she can probably kill you and you can't do anything about it because her wcassiopeiamiasma.png prevents any kind of escape in the poison. If confident enough, poke her down and then try to dodge her ultimate cassiopeiapetrifyinggaze.png by turning around or dodging it with your shadows. Basically, she is just another average immobile mid laner that is easy to kill, but you just need to dodge her ult. If you dodge it, you most likely kill her, but if you miss, there is a small chance that you kill her, let alone she doesn't kill you herself.

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

Uncommon and very annoying to deal with. His vorpalspikes.png  e passive vorpal strikes makes it annoying to get into melee range when you are trying to cs with him nearby. His rupture.png q is just annoying in general but fairly easy enough to dodge. However, his w feralscream.png silence is incredibly hurtful to Zed as you get silenced for about 2 seconds, preventing any flash or zedW.png shadow escape. His ult feast.png just instantly chunks you, dealing about 1/3 of your hp at around level 6.

His sustain in lane is insane from his passive chogathpassive.png, helping him regenerate mana AND health, so poking him down is incredibly hard. Adding to that, Cho'gath is naturally tanky and if he stacks his ult, it might be impossible to 1v1 him.

This is a hard match-up and I don't suggest you fight him at all in lane, or wait for a jungler gank. Unless you are confident you can outplay him, he is just another immobile mid laner. Luckily, chogath mid is not seen often.

VS

Diana

Medium

Average Match-up. Just dodge her dianaQ.png q with your ult when you are both level 6. That dodges damage from her q and does not allow her to use her ult dianaR.png twice.

Pre-6, you can outharass her because you use energy and she uses mana. Both of your Q's both do the same amount of damage. When she goes to cs, just poke her with q zedQ.png and auto attack and ezedE.png and instantly retreat, because she will probably use her shield dianaW.png. Overall, whoever gets the first kill in this lane will most likely end up being dominant. I suggest roaming constantly because fighting diana is risky.

VS

Ekko

Easy

Passive Farm lane: You probably wont kill him post level 6, so it's not worth talking much about this matchup. I would farm and outpoke him pre-6, maybe get a kill if he wastes his ekkoE.png e (his only escape other than ult) on a minion or something. This lane won't be very fun and you probably won't kill him/he won't kill you. His ekkoW.png w is very predictable and just dodge it and don't fight him when he has his shield.

Overall, ekko just get outclassed by zed in my opinion. You can dodge his damage and then retaliate easily. His ult ekkoR.png is easy to dodge by just keeping an eye out on the indicator trail thing. Do not stand in the trail while fighting him, the ult does a LOT of damage and also heals him, so if you get hit by it you might die.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Medium

Super uncommon nowadays and I don't have much experience playing against Fiddlesticks. I tagged this match-up as easy because I don't think you will get any kills on him because he will fear terrify.png you when you engage. He has okay sustain with his drain.png so poking him is a bit hard. Just farm well because he does not have that much kill pressure as long as you keep your distance. Roam a lot.

VS

Fizz

Hard

I don't want to talk about fizz. The most cancerous champ in the game even worse than 17.png. Fizz is the tilt master.

Basically as Zed, poke and harass Fizz pre-6. Bully him out of the lane and get him to farm under tower. If he engages, you can probably kill him pre-6.

Once you are both level 6, be careful. He can 100-0 you without a sweat. Wait for Fizz to use his fizzjump.png and then you can engage and fight. Post level 6, i would advise you to roam because it might be too dangerous to fight fizz. This is all from personal experience and fizz might be easier than I make it seem, but I have a hard time fighting fizzes after level 6 because they get out of control after getting ahead.

VS

Galio

Easy

Yeah.. Galio Mid. Seems retarded but is actually really strong. I do not have much experience against galio mid but I can tell that you will most likely not kill him at all in lane, unless you get an early gank. His kit is just annoying to deal with for zed and his ult galioidolofdurand.png counters yours. He can heal galiobulwark.png easily with his w so do not attack or damage him while it is up. Overall this is probably a farm lane. I don't know much else to say. Roam a lot and do not tower dive him because you will be taunted and then killed probably.

VS

Gragas

Easy

Pretty uncommon but annoying. He is naturally pretty tanky and with his gragasdrunkenrage.png w resistance from damage for a few seconds can be annoying.

He is easy to lane against. Poke him out of lane hard and dodge his barrels. He will probably just cs with barrels gragasbarrelroll.png until level 6.

Post level 6, he becomes almost unkillable. If he is good, he just will not fight you at all and cs. Zed can beat a Gragas 1v1, but if he lands his ult gragasexplosivecask.png after you ult, it's basically a failed kill attempt. If he is a bad gragas and decides to engage on you, zedR.png ult him right when he dashes gragasbodyslam.png to prevent the damage. Then he will probably ult you but you can ult right back in anyways. Overall, a pretty easy matchup but be careful of the damage he can do if you misplay.

VS

Heimerdinger

Medium

Farm lane. Do not fight him until level 6, his turrets deal too much damage. CS with zedQ.png q and farm under tower, he will be pushing. This will most likely be a farm lane until level 6, when you get your ult. If he stuns ch1concussiongrenade.png you when you ult, you will probably die or just escape. Just a boring lane. You will never die unless you engage on him first, because Heimer's kit does not allow him to play very aggressive. If CSing is your style, then do not fight because it is a risk to fight him. I suggest roaming a lot.

VS

Karma

Hard

Hard matchup. Not common but underrated. Her karmachakra.png mantra empowered karmaheavenlywave.png q's do a shitton of damage if you don't dodge them. You will probably be harassed hard. I suggest playing a bit passive until your jungler comes.

SHe is hard to kill when at level 6 with her empowered karmachakra.png w karmaspiritbond.png, which can heal her for 20% of her missing health if the link stays on for 2 seconds. In addition to that, she has a movement speed buff AND shield from her empowered  karmachakra.png e karmasoulshield.png. Karma is hard to kill and does a lot of damage, I suggest roaming or wait for jungle ganks.

VS

Karthus

Easy

Easy matchup. Not a lot of stuff to say here. Dodge his q's laywaste.png and poke him down at level 3 with zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.png combo.

Post level 6, you can freely kill him and he can't do much about it. If he flashes when you ult, flash after him and kill him and then reactivate ult zedR.png to go back to where you were, out of harm from his passive. I do not suggest roaming a lot this game because you can literally farm karthus and make him useless. Let your team know when he is level 6, however, because he has global presence from his fallenone.png ult.

VS

Kassadin

Easy

Easy match-up. He will be forced to farm with his nulllance.png because you can bully him and force him to cs under tower. You naturally win skirmishes pre-6 so take advantage of that and try to get an early level 2 kill by getting zedE.pnge level 2.

Post level 6, you probably have more cs than him by harassing him so he will probably roam to other lanes. Follow him or take the mid turret if too late to follow. Make sure you ward to see where he is going. Even if kassadin loses lane, he can still carry by roaming and getting other lanes fed. Make sure to ping when he is missing and ward the areas around middle lane.

If he stays in lane, you can just kill him with the zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.png combo, but then swapping back in with zedW.png and auto attack him to death. Time your zedR.png ultimate to predict when he will use his riftwalk.pngult and you will follow him to his destination and you can just kill him.

VS

Katarina

Medium

Medium Match-up. She can poke you easily with her q bouncingblades.png because it is not a skill shot, while your zedQ.png q is not. Before level 6, you can fight her and auto attack her down with zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.pngzedW.png. You are stronger than her before level 6. Play very aggressive pre 6.

Post 6, you can stay aggressive against her but be careful of her ultimate because it does a lot of damage if you stay in it the full duration.

If you are playing on the passive side, for instance if the enemy jungler ganked you and you are down a summoner spell, wait for her to use her ultimate deathlotus.png before you use yours. Your ultimate will negate about half of the damage from hers. Overall, a not so easy but not hard match-up.

Make sure she does not roam often and ward. A fed katarina is scary af and can end up to making your team lose if she gets out of control.

VS

Kayle

Medium

Although most players think that Kayle is the ultimate counter to Zed, I do not believe that is the case. It's not an easy match-up, but its not impossible either. Many people forget that Kayle is an immobile, squishy mid laner. Pre-6, she will probably go aggressive and harass you down. However, whenever she tries that, just throw a shuriken zedQ.png in her face. If she constantly tries to auto attack you with her kayleE.png e up, use the standard zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.png combo. Kayle has splash damage so she will be pushing the lane, so do not be worried about jungle ganks so you can freely use your zedW.png. At level 3, I usually try to kill Kayle by going all in and igniting her from the start. You outdamage her with burst at level 3. If you do not kill Kayle before level 6, then yes, the rumors of Kayle countering Zed is true.

TLDR; GO ALL IN ON KAYLE PRE LEVEL 6 AND GET A KILL. OTHERWISE YOUR F***ED.

VS

Kennen

Medium

Medium Matchup. He has free harass from his q kennenshurikenhurlmissile1.png and his w kennenbringthelight.png . You also have harass however, with your zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.png. I do not recommend reactivating your zedW.png unless you know you can definitely get the kill, otherwise Kennen will use his lightening surge kennenlightningrush.png to create more distance and then stun you and damage you hard.

At level 6, Kennen will have a free stun from his ultimate kennenshurikenstorm.png. Only try to kill him if he is under 50% hp or if he missed his kennenshurikenhurlmissile1.png, or if he used his  wkennenbringthelight.png on a minion or something. It will be difficult for Kennen to kill you, but it will be easier for  you to kill him. CS well and roam to other lanes most of the time.

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

Basically fighting another Zed. Leblanc has lots of early game dominance and poke from her leblancchaosorb.pngleblancslide.png (q + w) combo. Whenever she does this, throw your zedQ.png in the direction in which she dashed to you. That way, if she reactivates her leblancslide.png she will get hit by the shuriken anyways.

Pre level 6, leblanc will almost always have more damage than you. If you do fight her, however, her passive will trigger and she will basically have 1 second of invulnerabiity because she is invisible, and she will be hard to kill.

If she uses her e leblancsoulshackle.png and it hits you, DO NOT let the second portion of it root you in place. That will result in a leblancchaosorb.pngleblancslide.pngleblancmimic.png combo which will basically kill you. Always get out of the second half of leblancsoulshackle.png

Using your ultimate on LeBlanc: try to bait out her dash always. If she wasted it killing minions or something, then you can go in.
If she still has her dash up, only go in if she has under 50% hp. Once you ult, she will dash and then mimic leblancmimic.png the dash to gain more distance, and if you chase with zedW.png or flash, she will reactivate her dashes and outplay you. It is difficult to kill LeBlanc. You can still win if you predict her reactivations on her leblancslide.png and leblancmimic.png. Most LeBlanc will instictly reactivate as soon as they see you are throwing a zedQ.png. You can just bluff and throw it to their starting location, and that will work 75% of the time.

Overall, hard matchup and play VERY passive until level 3. Then you can trade with her and always try to proc thunderlords.

VS

Lissandra

Medium

Like Kayle, many people think Liss is a hard counter to Zed. However,  Lissandra is a squishy mid laner, but she does have an escape and cc. Lissandra is very mana hungry so using her spells to harass you will end up with you having no more potions and her being out of mana. After you notice that she misses a q lissandraQ.png or so, you can go in. She will most likely root you lissandraW.png if you reactivate zedW.png, so try to avoid doing that. Overall, not a hard match-up she has a lot of cc but lacks damage in her kit.

Fight her when she has her ultimatelissandraR.png on cooldown. Otherwise, an easy match-up but because of the fact that she can negate your ult makes it a medium match-up.

VS

Lulu

Hard

You will most likely never get a kill on her, and she can poke you down hard and prevent you from getting CS. Do not try to fight her without a gank. When you ult zedR.png, she will also ult lulur.png, and you will be forced to retreat. Then, she can continue bullying you out of lane. Luckily, lulu mid is not common anymore. Just do not try to fight her without a gank and cs with zedQ.png. If you follow this, you will not die in lane.

VS

Lux

Easy

Not much to say. Dodge her snare luxlightbinding.png, and that's basically it.

If she lands her luxlightstrikekugel.pnge on you, stay behind and do not let her auto attack you to trigger her passive AND thunderlords.

All in all, this is an easy immobile squishy mid lane matchup. Dodge her binding and you are good to go.

VS

Malzahar

Medium

Medium Match-up. Malzahar is a pusher by design, so you will forced to cs under tower and such. He has no kill potential on you as long as you stay healthy above 75% health. Treat his passive malzaharpassive.png like yasuos passive yasuopassive.png. Trigger it before using your damaging spells.

Pre level 6, just play passive and let him push the lane. Stay away from minions that are about to die with his malefic visions alzaharmaleficvisions.png so it does not pass onto you.
Post level 6, do not tower dive him. He will just ult you alzaharnethergrasp.png and then you will die.
I suggest roaming a lot in this match-up because it will be difficult to harass/kill him.

VS

Mordekaiser

Hard

He outpokes you hard and has a shield from his passive mordekaiserpassive.png. Stay away from the minions he places his w  mordekaisercreepingdeathcast.png on. In general, just try not to fight him and stay away from him and farm safely with zedQ.png. He is immobile so let him push and wait for a jungler's gank. Not much to say. Luckily, Morderkaiser is a dead champion and no one really plays him anynore so you wont have to deal with his sheninigans.

VS

Morgana

Easy

Dodge her binding darkbindingmissile.png = instant win. She will probably try to play safe and use her w tormentedsoil.png to farm and push the wave. Just harass her and she cannot do anything about it. Her black shield blackshield.png is practically useless against you except for the slow, but that is minor. Post level 6, bait out her binding somehow and if she misses, go all in. In the time it takes for her soulshackles.png ult to trigger for the second time to stun, you should have already gotten her low enough for the zedR.png death mark proc to finish her off.

VS

Nidalee

Easy

Is Nid Mid still viable? Im not really sure because I think nid is a jungler now. But anyways, you always outdamage at all levels. Just dodge the spears and you're good to go. Simple matchup. Remember to ignite her early when you fight her to reduce the healing from her primalsurge.png e in human form.

VS

Orianna

Easy

Pretty easy matchup. Her range on her orianaizunacommand.pngq + orianadissonancecommand.pngw combo is pretty short so you can just dodge it or run back to avoid the damage. Orianna runs out of mana pretty fast so you can freely harass her in lane. She is immobile so very easy to kill. When you engage on her, do not ult until she uses hers orianadetonatecommand.png most of the time. Her ult has a time animation in which you can tell when its about to trigger and that is when you ult back to prevent the damage. Her shield is annoying however orianaredactcommand.png so wait for the shield to disappear and then fight her.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

Luckily this matchup is uncommon. You will get fucked on hard. His q pantheon_throw.png harass is insane and he can all in you at level 3 and you can't really do anything. His passive pantheonpassive.png is super annoying as it just negates an auto attack. Not much to say here. Do not fight him or get close to him. Harass him with zedQ.png whenever you can and make sure to cs with it too. At level 6, roam a lot because he probably will too with his ult pantheon_grandskyfall_jump.png practically being the same thing as a 4.png ult destiny.png. Follow panth and counter gank him. Luckily, he falls off hard late game so if it comes to that, he gets outscaled.

VS

Ryze

Easy

Pretty easy match-up. Just dodge his overload.png and you should be fine for the most part. His snare runeprison.png is annoying when you ult him so be wary of that.

Remember that Ryze is an immobile mid laner. Once you get near him by your zedW.png or zedR.png he is pretty much dead.

To start off, you should stay passive until level 3 because he will try to harass you and poke you down. After level 3, you should be able to take control of the lane poking him when you can and just having more burst. At level 6, it should be an easy kill.

VS

Swain

Medium
First things first, always get ignite 14.png against Swain.
I labled this match-up as medium, but it can really be hard too. It all depends on pre-6. Swain is not that bad for Zed before level 6. He is just another immobile mid laner who can poke you down. If you can go aggressive and kill him early before level 6, he will no problem.
The problem is post-6. If you did not kill him early, you are screwed. He will most likely wreck your team and you yourself. He's unstoppable after level 6. On the other hand, kill him early and you are good for the rest of the game. One thing to watch out for is his swainshadowgrasp.png w snare.

VS

Syndra

Easy

Super easy. Immobile mid laner. You can literally dodge her ult syndraR.png with yours. There is not much to say about this matchup; its like most other easy matchups. Just dont get harassed down early and kill her level 6. Just be careful of her syndraE.png e which can potentially stun you or knock you back a bit.

VS

Taliyah

Easy

Basically the same thing as Syndra or most other easy matchups. Don't get poked down in lane, be careful of her taliyahW.pngw as it can knock you back.

Be sure to let your team know when Taliyah is missing or else she can roam hard with her ult taliyahR.png and get other lanes or herself fed. Think of her ult as a 4.png ult destiny.png  or 80.png ult pantheon_grandskyfall_jump.png. Try to follow her when you can and just kill her in lane.

VS

Talon

Medium

Pretty annoying matchup. Talon has more burst than you, but you have more damage potential.

Pre level 6, you should harass him down with zedQ.png and auto attack + zedE.png him when he is getting cs. He cannot spam his talonrake.png on you because he is mana hungry.

After level 6, if he engages on you, ult him immediately to potentially dodge his ult talonshadowassault.png. If you dodge his ult, you will probably win the fight or make him retreat. If you engage, make sure he is either under 50% hp or you have a pink ward to track his invisibility from talonshadowassault.png.  It all depends on how you play the matchup. Can be easy or hard. One thing I notice about Talon vs Zed, however, is that no matter who gets ahead, there is still an equal 1v1. Both of you do high damage.

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Super easy. His wildcards.png q is pretty easy to dodge, so his poke isnt that great. Fall back when he has a blue card pickacard.png or yellow card. This lane should be super easy. Harass him at level 3 with zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.png and you should go good to go. He has almost no kill pressure in lane, while you do.

Post level 6, always ping when he is missing to prevent roaming from his ultimate destiny.png. Try to follow him when you can even if you are going to get there late for clean up.

When his ult is on cd or he is in lane, just kill him immediately.
One thing to remember is that you can dodge his pickacard.png yellow card, blue card, whatever with your ultimate when he throws it at you.

VS

Veigar

Easy

Immobile mid match up. He does not have a guaranteed stun veigareventhorizon.png if you walk around in it and dodge his veigardarkmatter.png w. His poke is pretty bad because he will try to be stacking his veigarbalefulstrike.png q on minions.

You can dodge his ultimate veigarprimordialburst.png with yours. If you get ahead in lane, for instance by killing him early or something, he's going to be useless for the next 25 minutes. Late game like 35 minutes in, he might be a threat because he can 100-0 you or your adc if you get caught out by his stun.

VS

Vel'Koz

Medium

Medium matchup. Normally vel'koz will be an easy immobile mid matchup but however, he has A LOT OF damage. If you get stunned by his velkozE.png and full comboed, you are normally dead. It is hard to escape him too because of his ult velkozR.png range which can do true damage. If you get ahead in lane however he is basically done and cannot fight you. If he gets ahead and you die/misplay you are screwed because he will wreck your team.

VS

Viktor

Easy

Immobile mid matchup. Dodge his viktordeathray.png e poke in lane and harass when you can. He will probably push the lane so you will be forced to cs under tower. All you have to do is not get poked down by viktorpowertransfer.png q or viktordeathray.png e. His stun viktorgravitonfield.png is not immediate, so it will not save him when you engage with your ult zedR.png. When you ult, get your combo off fast and back out because he can retaliate for a lot of damage.

At level 6, you should be able to win.

VS

Vladimir

Medium

No kill lane. Vlad with the new rework will give him insane sustain with his vladimirtransfusion.png q, so don't even bother wasting your energy to harass him. Just focus on csing with yourzedQ.png. He has very low kill pressure in the mid lane and you also do not have that much either because he can pool vladimirsanguinepool.png and negate so much of your damage. Ask for ganks and you should be fine. He will most likely push the lane anyways.

I labeled this matchup as medium because you and him wont be able to kill each other without ganks.

VS

Xerath

Medium

Actually a lot more annoying than you think. Yes, he is an immobile mage, but he has super long range. He can cs with his xeratharcanopulse.png q and xerathlocusofpower.pngw safely and you cant even get in range. When he gets low o mana, he can auto attack from his passive xerathpassive.png and regain mana. If he happens to get close enough for you to damage him with your zedQ.png or zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.png, then do it immediately. Dont hesistate to get some poke on him.

If you engage, watch out for his stun xerathmagechains.png. It's pretty fricken annoying and hard to dodge when you are right in front of his face. If you fail to kill him and are somewhat low, he can xeratharcanopulse.png q you and ult xeratharcanebarragewrapper.png to finish you off.
Just dont get poked down and wait for him to get out of position for a kill.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Yasuo tilts me so hard I cant even. Nevertheless, its not that hard of a matchup. Get zedE.png e level 2 to prevent any kind of engage. He has lane dominance until level 6 because he can negate a lot of damage from his yasuoW.png windwall. Just play safe and try to cs whenever you can with zedQ.png. Dont get too close or he can just dash to you and get favorable trades with his yasuoE.pngyasuoQ.png and retreat back with yasuoE.png on a minion. Post level 6 though, you should be able to win. Your all in potential is so much greater than his at level 6 because he needs to stack up his third yasuoQ.png to even use his ult yasuoR.png. Engage when his yasuoQ.png q stacks are at zero, and then you should win. Watch out for his windwall and use your shurikens when close to him. Whoever gets the first kill will most likely win the lane so be wary. Ask your jungler for ganks because yasuo will probably push the lane because of how passive you play.

VS

Ziggs

Easy

Kind of similar to Xerath, except he lacks consistent damage. It is kind of difficult to land his abilties and they are easily dodgable.

He can be able to poke you down with ziggsq.png q and zone you with ziggse.png e, but as long as you keep your distance and sidestep you should be fine.

After level 6, wait him for to get too close to you and you can go in. You can use your standard zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.pngzedW.png and auto attack him to death. When he uses his satchel charge ziggsw.png, then ult him zedR.png right before he reactivates it for the distance. Aside from that, he is pretty easy to kill as long as you can get in range to damage him.

VS

Zilean

Medium

A pretty retarded matchup, luckily it is not very common. It can be very difficult to kill him past 6 because of his chronoshift.png ult, or because of his speed up/slow on his timewarp.png w. It is pretty easy to dodge his bombs timebomb.png but he will probably stack it on minions so you will get pushed under tower and forced to cs. You can easily kill Zilean pre-6 because he has no escapes other than his timewarp.png movement speed boost. Just don't get poked out of the lane and especially the double q stun timebomb.png. After level 6, it's almost impossible to kill him so that is why this match up is medium. Roam a lot.

VS

Zyra

Medium

Zyra would be a regular easy immobile mid but she has insane poke from her passive zyrapassive.png plants. Her plants prevent you from getting close to her and poking her. Just a genuinely annoying matchup. She will try to force you out of the lane and cs under tower while her plants just eat away at you. The only upside is that you have a much stronger all in potential. One thing to watch out for is her zyraE.png e which roots you. If you are under 50% hp and she lands this, you can expect to die instantly.

If you get ahead, zyra will be nothing to you and you can kill her instantly. Wait for a gank and if successful, you own the lane and can play aggressive.
At level 6, look for an opportunity to zedW.pngzedE.pngzedQ.png and gauge how low she is. If less than 65%, then swap back in and ult her. Once again, Zyra is an immobile mid and easy to kill.

My Experience With Zed Back to Top

So you might look at my summoner profile and think, "This kid is just plat, I want a diamond+ zed guide."

I have one thing to say to that. "I dont care if you follow my guide or not."

I wrote this guide for the enjoyment of myself and boredom of life. Guides are meant to be educational and many of them are not good. What do you expect from a free League of Legends statistics website? I do have some merit in writing this as I used to be diamond in Season 4 but was demoted from diamond 5 and then decayed to platinum 4. My rank is currently platinum 4, with a 68% win rate and 4.25 kda with Zed. I am aiming for Diamond again but it will take time because I do not play ranked often.

It's up to you if you want to read this guide and learn from it, because this was my first guide and I think its a pretty bad one to say the least.zedd.PNG
