Summoner Spells Back to Top

No matter you have an escape in your kit, Ziggs needs the mobility of Flash to either get out of a dangerous situation or to secure a kill. Pretty standard choice for an AP-mid carry. Ignite is the 2nd choice to finish off enemy champions.

With Patch 4.5 the buffs to 7.png Heal and 3.png Exhaust make these summoner spells really viable. Not only that Heal is providing you with a 30% speedbuff after Usage, it as well removes the debuff from Ignite. Hence, you should consider Heal over Ignite in Lanes where you need that extra safety. Exhaust on the other Hand is a MUST HAVE against Assassins like Zed or Talon as it negates a lot of damage. (If correctly timed)

To sum it up:

  • My first choice for Ziggs if I face a lane where I have a high kill potential on my opponent is 14.png Ignite.
  • If I have to face an assassin I take 3.png Exhaust as it will let you trade perfectly against them.
  • If I have to face a lane where I need the extra Protection, I take 7.png Heal or 21.png Barrier. (It's a personal choice whereas I prefer Heal over Barrier now cause of the latest changes)

New Runes Back to Top

Masteries Back to Top

I am going with a 12-18-0 in the new masteries tree as there is literally nothing else you would go for as a cast heavy ap mage. I prefer Runic Affinity over Secret Stash as the longer lasting buff duration comes in more handy, especially after the changes to Athene's in Patch 6.9!

In General I am not a Fan of the new Masteries, but oh well - new season always means changes everyone has to deal with! ;)

The Standard Skill Order is always R>Q>E>W. It is a matter of the matchup when you want to skill the first point in W: If the enemy team has a Jungler with CC like 60_64.png Elise or a gap closer like 64_64.png Lee Sin or 59_64.png Jarvan, you would want to skill it at level 2, else on level 3.

Short Fuse (Passive)

ziggs_short_fuse.png

This is your passive Ability and most guys underestimate the power of it. Every 12 seconds (when on cooldown, each ability used by Ziggs will lower the cooldown of the passive by 4/5/6 seconds at levels 1/7/13) Ziggs next basic attack deals bonus magic damage, scaling with his level (1-18) and Ability Power:

Deals 20/24/28/32/36/40 + 0.30x Ability Power 48/56/64/72/80/88 + 0.40x Ability Power 100/112/124/136/148/160 + 0.50x Ability Power Magic Damage

If you make the math, on level 18, a Ziggs with let's say 500 Ability Power will deal with this passive an additional 400 Magic Damage (not mitigated against magic resist). So do not stop auto attacking during teamfights as you can easily make use of this passive several times, which will allow you to deal another nice amount of Damage!

As if this wasn't enough already, the passive deals 150% of it's Damage to Structures, which makes it so useful to get an early tower kill in your lane.

Bouncing Bomb (Q)

ziggs_bouncing_bomb.png

This is your main Damage Ability with a ridiculous low cooldown on max level. The base CD at level 5 is 3.8 seconds. As with patch 6.9 and the changes to mage items, you can't actually miss the opportunity gain at least 20% more CD reduction what will lower the CD to 2.6 seconds with a blue buff. A Ziggs like this is the hell on earth for the enemy team when it comes up to siege turrets: Not only that you can spam it like there's no tomorrow, it additionally has a small AOE range and a long cast range:

bouncing_bomb_maxrange.png
The red line shows you the max range - it bounces up to 3 times or will explode once it collides with an enemy unit. The small blue circle is the AOE range of it.

Like all of Ziggs other abilities it scales with Ability Power:

Deals 75/120/165/210/255 + 0.65x Ability Power Magic Damage

Satchel Charge (W)

ziggs_satchel_charge.png

This is a very useful Ability for Ziggs. Not generally as a Damage Ability but rather an Utility Ability: It is Ziggs build in escape as it knocks him away when he stands on it. You should use it to get away from a gank or to reposition yourself in teamfights. You can control the direction of where you will be knocked to if you stay on the edge of the ability into the direction you wanna get knocked to:

ziggs_satchel_charge_direction.png
Here you will be knocked away over the wall where the red arrow shows to

It can be as well used, if correctly placed, to knock enemies into your direction if they are running away. In addition, enemies who got knocked away with it will be stunned for a very brief duration.

Overall, the high Cooldown and low Damage/AP ratio makes it not a main damage ability. So only use it to make crazy plays or use it for what I have mentioned above.

With Patch 6.9 the Ability got another nice function: It destroys enemy turrets instantly if they are below (based on the skilled level of the ability) 25/27.5/30/32.5/35%! So remember to use it on low HP towers!

Deals 70/105/140/175/210 + 0.35x Ability Power Magic Damage

Hexplosive Minefield (E)

ziggs_hexplosive_minefield.png

A really powerful Ability. Plants a minefield with 11 mines:

ziggs_hexplosive_minefield_planted.png

Each mine deals damage and slows enemy champions by 20%/25%/30%/35%/40% for 1.5 seconds. If an enemy triggers one mine, additional mines of that field will deal only 40% damage, but correctly placed you will trigger at least 4-5 mines on an enemy champion what will be around 2.5x the Damage shown in your tooltip.

Use it to cut off walking ways of enemy champions as they either have to move around it (= they lose time) or they will eat a chunk of damage and are slowed. It is as well a great escape tool cause of the slow.

Deals 40/65/90/115/140 + 0.30x Ability Power Magic Damage per Mine (Additional mines on the same enemy deal only 40% Damage)

Mega Inferno Bomb (R)

ziggs_mega_inferno_bomb.png

A very versatile Ultimate. The cast range will make you a threat to bottom- and toplane all the time:

mib_cast_range.png

As you can see, you do not need to move a lot up- or down the river to get in range with your Ultimate. One thing to mention is, the further you throw the bomb, the longer it will take until it detonates on the destination target. With some experience you will get a feeling where to plant the bomb on a fleeing champion.

The Ability has a high AP-Ratio and is a nightmare to an enemy team at the late game. The big AOE-range will let you shred down loads of HP bars in a teamfight, so do not waste it easily:

ziggs_mib_cast.png

The inner circle is the core damage zone. It's the area where it does the damage shown in your tooltip. The outer circle "only" deals 80% of the damage shown in your tooltip. Be aware of that when you launch it!

With Patch 6.9 they once again changed the ability: The cooldown is lowered with each rank again (down from 120 seconds at all ranks): 120/105/90 seconds

The sad thing is that the ability doesn't deal double damage to minions anymore! That makes it near impossible to clear an entire minion wave in the early to midgame with it as your AP will most likely be not high enough.

Deals 250/375/500 + 0.90x Ability Power Magic Damage

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    This is the most common start on Ziggs if you face another AP Mid champion. The Health, Manareg and AP is exactly what you need as Ziggs in the early game.
    Viable Start vs AD champions. The Cloth Armor combined with the correct masteries will even let you be able to trade at levels 2-3. However, as you can farm on a safe distance with Ziggs you should only consider this start if you want to go hyper aggressive early levels, else go for the Dorans Ring start!
    Situational: If you need an extra Ward at the start to prevent ganks from junglers and your lane opponent is not able to harass you, this will let you stay in lane forever.
    It's another very viable start if you do not need early combat stats and just want to farm very effectively. With the amount of Mana and HP Regen in your pocket you can delay your first back a lot!

Core Items

    Route #01: With the changes in patch 6.9, Athene's is no longer a viable option if you consider the cost/effectiveness. Getting the manareg from Masteries/Runes is the way to go right now. Yet you need an item that helps you in the laning phase. Rush Lost Chapter first, it's passive is very useful during the laning phase!
    Route #02: Archangel's Staff costs 200 gold more than Morello's. It will outshine it (AP-wise) once you go above 666 Total Mana. You'll miss out a lot of Ziggs early game power for a better end game power. It is another great route to go, but overall I'm missing the 20% cooldown reduction!
    Endgame build #01: If you went the Morellonomicon route you'd normally not need more CDR, but Zhonya's is just an overall great item on Ziggs that the extra 10% comes in handy! For extended sieges you will still need a blue buff as your mana pool is limited. But in the current meta long lasting sieges are very rare.
    Endgame build #02: If you went the Tear of Goddess route you need to include some CDR. The most cost effective item for that is, oh wonder, Morellonomicon. It is just an item you'd want to have all the time on Ziggs. This build is great for long lasting sieges, but in the current meta it doesn't happen a lot!
    My most favorite full build! It has a lot of playmaking ability cause of Zhonyas and Rylai's Crystal Scepter. But well, that's just my personal choice! (didn't want to hide it! :P)
    Sometimes these Boots are just better, for example vs heavy CC teams. It is a matter of taste but these Boots can be very useful!
    At lategame, this trinket works very well on Ziggs due to the high range it has. You can make an area visible and possibly nuke an enemy champion with your Ultimate.
    Denying Vision is very Important in the lategame. If you see your teammates do not care about it, pick it up and do it on your own!

Situational Items

    Do you get burst down in every teamfight? GA is the answer as your last item!
    Banshee's Veil is a good last Item to counter Initiations like Annies Flash/Tibbers, Leonas Ultimate or the Burst of LeBlanc. A stunned/silenced Ziggs can't deal damage and is an easy Target!
    Liandry's Torment is good vs HP stacking Tanks. The cooldown is nearly similar to your Q at the end game, so your poke potential is even greater with it! Overall, 95% of the games you won't pick up this item!
    It's a great last Item if the enemy team doesn't have hard engages. You can poke and kite them forever! This is in most of the games my favorite choice for the last item! (I even sometimes pick it up as 4th or 5th item already!)
    Even after the change it's a very powerful last Item if you can more or less easy harass with your AA. You can kill an ADC within 2 seconds if you play it correctly. :)
    Another great AP Item for Ziggs. I'd even consider using it over Zhonya's if you don't need the active of it. It adds another huge AOE damage and therefore is a great item for Ziggs!

So, Patch 6.9 did hit every user of 3174_32.png Athene's Unholy Grail very hard. The item is, let's be honest, useless on a cast heavy mage right now.

After playing several hours and doing the math I found 2 other routes to go. (tbh, it's no Magic to spot it as there is basically a limited pool of available items for cast heavy mages like Ziggs is)

So the choice you have to make is 3165.png Morellonomicon first or later/never after 3003.png Archangel's Staff.

In all the games where I've tested the new Items I felt that Morello's is a way better Item to start with as it doesn't need a ramp-up time like Archangel's does. The passive of 3802.png Lost chapter is really great while leveling up. I never really ran out of Mana. The flip of the coin is that at the lategame you will not have a huge mana-pool to use. Yet I think that's not the issue as in the current meta long lasting sieges are like never happening: You need to deal tons of damage in a short period of time - and you'll be able to do so even with a limited mana-pool! ;)

If you go the 3003.png Archangel's Staff route you will miss out on cooldown reduction. The most cost effective item for it is Morellonomicon as well, so I always rushed it as 2nd item. The flip of the coin while going for this route is that you either delay (additional) magic penetration from 3135.png Void Staff or raw Ability Power from 3089.png Rabadon's Deathcap.

So it's again a matter of your style. My opinion on it is, that a good Ziggs Player doesn't need tons of mana if he's good in landing skillshots. ;) That's why you don't see the Archangel's Staff in my favorite build. That still doesn't mean I think it's a bad way to go - it is viable but doesn't feel "as good as not rushing it first". I hope you get what I mean! ;)

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
The deal with Aatrox is, you need to kill him twice when his passive is up. Early game you can harass him easily and farming shouldn't be a problem as he is a melee champ. What makes him so dangerous is his gap closer that is a perfect initiation for a gank.

Once Aatrox gets his first items with sustain, he'll laugh about your harassment. My advice is to safely push the lane to his tower and apply pressure as his waveclear is lower than yours.

This matchup is all about skills and how fast you can react. The jump from Aatrox has a tiny cast time so if you see him using it you should use your satchel charge instantly on yourself to get away. If he lands the stun, you will receive hell a lot of damage in a short time.

That's why you should always keep distance to Aatrox: If he can't attack you he can't sustain. So kiting him backwards works wonders. :)

VS

Ahri

Medium

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: --

Summary:
Pre 6 you can kill Ahri as she is naturally slow and has no escape. Try to harass her with your Q and AA combined with passive.

After level 6 a smart Ahri will not let you kill her. That's the time where you would want to push the lane to her tower and look for roaming to other lanes.

With her Ultimate, Ahri has a lot of kill potential on you if she hits her charm. So don't stay in lane with less than 70% HP as a good charm combined with all her other abilities + ignite will most likely kill you with ease. Use your Minions as Bodyguards and always be ready to use your W to escape if she suddenly ulties on you.

Ziggs vs Ahri Midlane

VS

Akali

Medium

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: ++
Kill Potential Post 6: -

Summary:
Assassins are always a threat to Ziggs. Pre 6 you have no issues vs Akali as she has no gap closer. That's the time where you need to get your advantage. Zone her away from farming minions and harass as much as you can. Do not push your lane as it will give her free farm and opens up possible gank threats to yourself.

Post 6, you need to be very cautious as she can burst you down very fast. Always save your satchel charge to get away if she jumps on you. The minefield is always nice to use when she uses her shroud.

As always, you can easily avoid all her kill potential on you if you farm from a safe distance. (starting of course once she hits level 6, cause pre 6 she is no threat to Ziggs at all)

If you do not feed her she'll be outclassed in teamfights thanks to Ziggs AoE Damage and better Team utility. I once zoned an Akali away from creeps for like 10 minutes of the game. No gold = no items = no threat. ;)

VS

Annie

Medium

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
The only thing you have to watch out for is when Annie's stun is available. That's the time where she most likely try to flash in and Tibbers on you followed with her other abilities. If you are quick in reacting, you can easily dodge it with your flash. If you are not, try to keep a safe distance to her if you see the stun is up and just farm.

Annies Burst Damage out trades you at all levels, so try to harass her and force her out of lane.

VS

Azir

Medium

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Azir is very annoying due to his high range soldiers. You can, as always, farm very easy as Ziggs from a safe distance. Once Azir gets some Items he will out-trade you in a 1v1. He can as well dance around with a correct placement of his soldiers.

Don't let him free harass you. Either harass back or just farm up and push the lane to his tower as he's very weak early on farming under the tower.

VS

Brand

Easy

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: +

Summary:
If you are good in dodging his Skills this is a fairly easy matchup. Just do what Ziggs can do the best: Poke and push the lane to his tower. Don't let him free farm in the mid of the lane as he is very mana hungry and his abilities have a high CD compared to yours.

VS

Cassiopeia

Medium

Farming: +
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Cassio has a lot of trade potential, so whoever misses skillshots will have a hard time. I suggest to easy farm and wait for your jungler to gank. Once you have an advantage, you can easily snowball her.

VS

Cho'Gath

Hard

Farming: +
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Have seen a lot of Cho'gath's lately in Mid vs my little Ziggs. This matchup is really hard as the natural sustain from his passive and high wave clear somewhat counters you. In addition, at level 6 he is as deadly as Annie: Flash, W (silence), Q, R combined with AA's + Ignite will eat Ziggs with ease.

Pre 6, his kill potential is as well very high if he manages to land his Q on you.

Start with Boots of Speed and try to farm from a safe distance. Don't use your skills to harass him as his passive sustain will let you waste your mana without any effect.

In the lategame you bring a lot more to your team, so farm up and wait for Teamfights. :)

VS

Diana

Easy

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +++
Kill Potential Post 6: +

Summary:
One of the easiest matchups for Ziggs: You can deny her farm as she is a melee champ. You can harass with your Q and AA easily and force her out of lane or hug her tower.

VS

Elise

Easy

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: ++
Kill Potential Post 6: ++

Summary:
Easy going for Ziggs: You farm a lot better than her and your AOE spells kill her spiderlings very fast. In addition, Elise is very mana hungry and farming in Human form is really weak on her. Harass and force her out of lane.

If she rappels, just instant use your W on your position and fly away followed with an E+Q on that position.

VS

Ezreal

Medium

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Ezreal in the current Meta is a very viable pick, thanks to runeglaive. As always, you can easily farm with Ziggs against him. Yet a smart Ezreal player won't let you kill him.

Once Ezreal gets some Items he can use his arcane shift agressively towards you and his burst damage is not to be underestimated.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: ++
Kill Potential Post 6: +

Summary:
Push him to the tower as Fiddle is very weak in farming under it. Just ward the brushes when he is missing and expect a Flash+Crowstorm+Fear on you. Other than that, in a fair 1v1 trade you will punish him. Use your E on him, Q + AA's and whenever he starts to drain use your W to interrupt it and finish him off with AA's + Q + Ignite.

VS

Fizz

Hard

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: ---

Summary:
Laning against Fizz needs a high awareness. Never stay in his Q range as it allows him to free harass you. If you see him using his Trickster to close the gap, punish him for it!

Try to push him out of the lane before he reaches level 3 or 4. That will give you a high advantage!

Post level 6 his Kit allows him to instant kill you with a combination of R,W,Q,AA and E.

The key is to deny his farm early levels. So zone him around the minions and harass him with Q and AA's. A Fizz without Items isn't a threat at all.

Here's a Video about the laning phase vs Fizz:

VS

Gragas

Medium

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Pre 6 and without his Q on level 5 you can farm a lot easier than him. Deny his farm with Poke and Q+E whenever he wants to last hit Minions in melee range. Once Gragas gets some Items and gets on rolling, it will be a farm lane where he has the potential to kill you with a good ultimate and a jungler gank.

Ziggs vs Gragas Midlane

VS

Heimerdinger

Easy

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +++
Kill Potential Post 6: +++

Summary:
Easy matchup. Harass him as much as you can and dont be shy to destroy his turrets with your passive and Q.

VS

Jarvan IV

Hard

Farming: +
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: --

Summary:
Jarvan is a pain for Ziggs. His knockup and post 6 Ultimate are giving him 2 gap closers. Just farm and wait for ganks as it is near impossible to kill him.

VS

Jayce

Easy

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: +

Summary:
Try to dodge his poke and farm. If he goes all in on you use your E behind him and W away followed with a Q + AA.

VS

Karma

Hard

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
This matchup is fairly hard. Karma can farm very well and dodge most of your abilities with the speedbuff. The shield let her trade easily with you. This is a hard matchup cause you can't kill her. Other than that, her kill potential on you is nearly 0 as well if you play smart.

Overall this is a farm lane whereas Ziggs will have a higher impact in teamfights.

VS

Karthus

Easy

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +++
Kill Potential Post 6: +++

Summary:
Easy matchup. Poke and harass him as much as you can.

VS

Kassadin

Medium

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +++
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
The key vs Kassadin is to zone him early levels and deny all of his farm. Kassadin has a hard time to farm under his turret so push the wave. Post 6, you should have an item advantage so if he starts jumping on you, just place your E under your feet and trade him with AA's, Q, E and W on him.

The remade Kassadin is really weak and without his silence he is no real threat to you.

Ziggs vs Kassadin Midlane (Old Kassadin)

VS

Katarina

Easy

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: ++
Kill Potential Post 6: ++

Summary:
Your kit is perfect vs Kata as your W counters her ultimate. Harass her a lot and when she jumps on you use our E + Q + AA.

VS

Kayle

Hard

Farming: +
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: -

Summary:
Kayle is a hard matchup for Ziggs. Do not go to close to him if your W is on cooldwon as his slow followed with his empowered AA will do a chunk of damage on you.

Try to harass him with Q and hope his mana will run out. Kayle is pushing the lane very hard as well so this will be a farm lane.

Ziggs vs Kayle Midlane:

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Try to stay always behind your minions. If he jumps on you, use your spells to trade back. (do not trade vs him if you are isolated)

VS

LeBlanc

Hard

Farming: +
Kill Potential Pre 6: ---
Kill Potential Post 6: ---

Summary:
This is another hard matchup for Ziggs where you need a high awareness. Make good use of the range of your Q and farm on a safe distance. LB can easily dodge all of your abilites and her kit is perfect to kill you in a 1v1. (high burst damage!)

Just push the lane to her tower and try to roam cause LB has a hard time farming under her tower!

VS

Lissandra

Easy

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
You have higher range and her gap closer is very easy to dodge. Just harass her outside of your minions and push the lane.

VS

Lux

Easy

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Lux has a high range as well but the cooldown on her spells are very high. Dodge her abilities and then go on her with your abilities + AA.

Ziggs vs Lux Midlane:

VS

Malzahar

Medium

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: ++
Kill Potential Post 6: +

Summary:
Malzahar is not a champion you have to fear a lot. His Spells are really easy to predict and your long ranger allows you to harass him. In addition, thanks to your AOE abilities and passive, you get some free gold from time to time when you kill his Voidlings.

However, once he reaches level 6 a good flash, combined with Null Zone and Ignite + Ultimate has a high potential to kill you. So stay on a safe range and always be ready to flash out!

Ziggs vs Malzahar Midlane:

VS

Nidalee

Easy
Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +++
Kill Potential Post 6: +

Summary:
Pre 6 you can zone Nidalee like crazy. Try to harass her with your Q and AA combined with passive.

After level 6 she can dodge most of your abilites in Cougar form, but when she goes in melee range to farm punish her for it.

Overall this is one of the easiest matchups for Ziggs.

Ziggs vs Nidalee Midlane

VS

Orianna

Medium

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
In the early levels you have way better wave clear. Do not stay in Oriannas range when your passive is on CD. If it is up, go and trade with her with Q, AA, E, AA, AA and Q.

Level 6 a good shockwave can harm you a lot so always try to dodge it.

VS

Pantheon

Medium

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
This can be an easy or hard matchup. Against Pantheon you never want to stay in his jump range. His Kit is deadly vs Ziggs. Other than that, you farm a lot easier and safer, so harass him with Q when he tries to lasthit minions.

VS

Swain

Farming: +
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: --

Summary:
Just dodge his stun and push him to the tower. Easy matchup for Ziggs.

VS

Syndra

Medium

Farming: +
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: -

Summary:
Never stop moving vs Syndra as her Q is easy to dodge if you keep moving. Just harass her with Q and AA's while moving. She will either stop trying to harass you or lose a lot of farm.

Once level 6, a good stun followed by Ultimate + Ignite is deadly. So try to be always topped of and dodge her spheres.

Ziggs vs Syndra Midlane:

VS

Talon

Hard

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: ---

Summary:
Same applies as for most AD melee champs with a gap closer: Farm on a safe distance. Level 2-3 you can easily defeat Talon, but once he gets his first items you do not want to 1v1 him, especially when his ultimate is up.

VS

Tristana

Medium

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
AP Tristana is gone after, I suppose it was somewhere in Patch 5.x. So this matchup is basically gone as an ad-Tristana isn't a threat at all for Ziggs. I however let the original description in here for nostalgia reasons: ;)

In the laning phase try to not stay to close to her so that she can place her E on you all the time as it will chunk down loads of your HP. Once she's 6, you really need to be aware that a little poke will open up the possibility, that she'll jump on you to do the all-in combo which most likely will kill you.

As Ziggs you have the advantage of a safe laning phase. So just farm up and once you group up with your team you areĀ  way more powerful in sieging turrets. AP Tristana is a mage assassin that does burst damage, you are doing more damage over time so use your bouncing bombs to siege enemies.

Be aware that a quick satchel charge can always safe you from an all-in attempt of Tristana. I recommend to take barrier in this matchup. If you survive the burst, don't run away as this is the time for you to trade back and kill her. She has no escape once she used W to jump on you. Take this advantage!

VS

Twisted Fate

Easy

Farming: +++
Kill Potential Pre 6: ++
Kill Potential Post 6: ++

Summary:
Very easy matchup: Harass him back to base like there's no tomorrow. If he uses his ultimate to roam to another lane, take the mid turret.

VS

Veigar

Medium

Farming: +
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Veigar lvl 6 has a lot of kill potential if he lands his stun. He is made to burst down AP champs due to the nature of how his Kit works. Farm on a save distance and poke him.

Banshee's is a good choice vs Veigar.

Ziggs vs Veigar Midlane:

VS

Vel'Koz

Easy

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: +

Summary:
No matter that Vel'Koz has a high range on his Q as well, it is far more easy to dodge than Ziggs Bouncing Bomb as you can use your Minions as Bodyguards. In addition, your lower Cooldowns will let you farm a lot faster, especially in the early levels.

Avoid his stun and harass him with Bouncing Bombs. If he uses his Ultimate just Satchel Charge out of range of it.

Not a hard lane at all for Ziggs.

Ziggs vs Vel'Koz Midlane: (Missplayed a bit at the start, but then stomped him.)

VS

Viktor

Medium

Farming: +
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Viktor is not a standard pick lately in this meta, but however his Kit provides everything he needs to safely farm vs Ziggs: A shield, high range aoe clear ability and a strong Ultimate. This matchup I consider as a real skill matchup: You need to know what Viktor is capable of and work around it. Dodge his Death Ray as it does a good chunk of damage and avoid to trade him in a 1v1 situation, as he can easily trade back and even stun you.

In the end both champs provide a lot of team-fighting potential at the end game, so just easily farm up and be "better" than Viktor! ;)

Ziggs vs Viktor Midlane

VS

Xerath

Medium

Farming: +
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Xerath is basically a mirror to Ziggs when it comes up to farming and range. In this matchup no one really has an edge. (Ziggs has a slight advantage in the first few levels thanks to his passive) It's a pure farm lane. With your first back I recommend to buy Boots to easier get out of his Q if he tries to aim for you.

Else, watch out for ganks and you should be safe.

VS

Yasuo

Medium

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: o
Kill Potential Post 6: o

Summary:
Yasuo is really annoying with all his dashes through minions and champions. I haven't played a lot vs him yet, but I think I have the key to win vs him early in the game:

Harass him with AA's + Q and if he dashes through minions to get to you, place your E behind you (in direction of your walking path back to your turret) and move back to the turret while AA him and using Q. If he follows you, he will eat your E - that's the time where you can turn around the chase and follow on him using AA and Q/W+ Ignite to get him down.

Ziggs vs Yasuo Midlane
(have to admit it wasn't my best game, but you will understand what I wrote above)

VS

Zed

Hard

Farming: ++
Kill Potential Pre 6: +
Kill Potential Post 6: --

Summary:
Zed has a high wave clear as well and in a straight 1v1 he beats you easily. (once he has his ultimate)

Pre 6, try to harass him and maybe he is even dumb enough to trade vs you pre 6. If you can get a kill early on, it will make your life a lot easier.

Zhonyas is a must have item vs Zed else it is way to easy for him to kill you.

Introduction Back to Top

Welcome everyone to my first written guide on LoLKing. Lately I have been playing Ziggs a lot and I wanted to share my sights on this awesome champion.

As this is my first written guide, I hope you will share your feedback and tell me if it is useful for you. Thanks for reading this and if you think it's a good guide, like it! :)

I will only write guides about Champions where I have enough experience with. Here are my current stats with Ziggs in EUW ranked games (~1.9k elo)

ziggs_stats.png

It is very easy to carry a game as Ziggs if you make some crazy plays. The more experience you get with Ziggs, the easier it will be to play him.

In the Matchups section I will upload Videos in the future to show how the laning phase is going against these specific champions. As I don't know if I will ever face for example an Ezreal again, I can't promise to upload a Video for every matchup, but I will try my best to provide as many videos as possible. ;)

Furthermore, in my opinion,the difficulty in matchups can be divided between farming and trading. As it is really easy to farm on a safe distance with Ziggs the laning phase can be very relaxing, even vs champions that have a trade advantage against you like 7_64.png LeBlanc. The difficulty shown in the matchups section will therefore mention the 1v1 trade difficulty. In the Notes to every matchup I will use a rating system for different aspects of the laning phase:

  • Very easy: +++
  • Comfortable: ++
  • With some awareness not that hard: +
  • Skill matchup: o
  • Tricky: -
  • Hard: --
  • Nightmare: ---

Does this look dangerous to you? - Hi, I am Ziggs! Back to Top

First off, why would you chose Ziggs over any other champion?

  • Amazing Farm potential with his AOE abilities and extremely low cooldown on his Q at max level.
  • Build in escape or (short) stun.
  • Passive perfect to poke or get an early turret in the game.
  • High range on his Q and therefore extreme poke-potential or safe farming possible.
  • Ultimate works very well with AOE stuns like 32_64.png or 89_64.png
  • Never gets boring to W over to the blue buff instantly followed by an E/Q combo. :)
  • He is using Bombs, who wouldn't like it? :)

It is impossible to outfarm Ziggs. His Kit has maybe the best waveclear early game and therefore puts a high pressure on your lane opponent. Even if you face assassins you can easily farm with your E/Q combo while you are not even near to the enemy champion.

Laning phase and your role in the team Back to Top

Early Game:

At the early game you would want to farm up and put a high pressure on your lane opponent. It is very easy to farm with Ziggs and you should be able to outfarm every other champion. In this stage of the game you should be aware of what you are capable of: If you face a champion that you can easily harass and push to the tower like 76_64.png Nidalee, you should zone that champion and harass him while farming. Your opponent will either lose a lot of CS or a lot of HP which will let you be able to secure a first kill. If you play aggressive, do not forget to ward and be ready to W away if a gank is incoming. That's one of the main threats for a pushing Ziggs - a gank from the enemy jungler!

If you have to face a champion where your trade potential is nearly 0, like vs 7_64.png LeBlanc, your job is to safely farm and not getting killed. With your abilities you can farm on a safe distance and you will be still able to push your opponent to the tower. Only try to go for a kill if your jungler helps.

If your lane opponent likes to roam, punish him with an early mid turret kill as your wave clear and passive will allow you to get a structure down very fast. That will as well open up more routes for your jungler.

Mid Game:

Once you have completed your first big item, like Athene's or Zhonya's, your waveclear will be so ridiculous fast that you can look for possible kills on other lanes. Either by going there or by helping with your Mega Inferno Bomb. You do not need to move a lot for your Ultimate to be in range of top or bot lane. So just move down or up the river a bit and help on possible engages. If the enemy champions already flashed out you can maybe secure an easy kill with your Ultimate, or, if they managed to get out of the engage without using flash you can force them to do so. That opens up your other lanes to kill their turrets what will give your team another edge in the game.

Late Game:

This is the time where it becomes very fun to play Ziggs. Once you group up with your team to go for objectives, you will be a pain for the enemy team. It's the time where you throw a Bouncing Bomb every 2.6s into the enemy team. Try to aim for the squishy targets like their AD or AP carries. Once you shredded their HP bars they either will recall, which will let you be able to kill turrets more or less uncontested or, they will get mad and start engaging on your team as the longer you siege the more likely the chances are that they will die.

Once a teamfight starts, try to land your Bouncing Bombs on the high threat enemies, like their AD or AP carries. Use your Mega Inferno Bomb on as many enemy champions as possible as it will chunk down loads of HP and will give the rest of your team an easier time to kill them. Try to cut off walking ways with your E so that they either have to move around it (= they lose time) or move through it and take a lot of damage. With your W you should either safe yourself or protect your AD carry from an engage. And do not forget to AA during teamfights as it is another high damage ability thanks to your passive!

If your team decides to engage, you can use the Mega Inferno Bomb as an opener if the enemy team is sticking together. This will cause them to spread out to dodge it and will open up single target engages for your teammates.

About the author... Back to Top

My name is Carsten and I am living in Germany. I am 26 years old and addicted to League of Legends.

While trying out several different lanes, I figured that I can work best in midlane. That's why I specialized my skills for that lane. I am playing LoL since closed beta, but I wasn't really active in ranked until mid-season 3, where I finished in Gold 1. Pre-season 4 I advanced to Platinum 4 and then the reset came for Season 4.

I managed to finish season 4 in mid-Diamond and season 5 in Diamond 1. Currently I do not have enough time to play on the highest level (thanks to my job), but later on this year I'll start the hunt again for D1 or maybe even Master Tier! The sky is the limit, isn't it? ;)

Before someone asks: Yes, I am a Fnatic Fanboy. I am following the boys ever since Season 1 and cheering for them. Ever since xPeke left, I am now as well following the progress of Origen, but I am still in love with Fnatic. :)

Alright, guess that's enough Info about myself.
