Summoner Spells Back to Top

Zoe, the Twilight child, can take many different Summoner spells. For her, I recommend always taking Flash as it is a very good and versatile Summoner spell, which can be used to engage/disengage and can save your skin!

You have a lot of choice with your secondary spell and here are some reasons:

6.png Ghost: Very good Summoner as it can speed you up. It allows you to chase as well as escape. It will also allow you to roam quicker. This can be taken is practically all matchups.

7.png Heal: Heal is a very good spell as it can heal you for a certain amount of health. Heal allows you to stay healthier in lane and will save you against champions with burst damage or burn. This can also save you against Ignite if used at the right time. Take this in matchups against who have burst damage or who can easily kill you.

12.png Teleport: This spell is good as it can give you global map pressure. You can take this Summoner when you’re against an even lane with no kill potential.

1.png Cleanse: I only recommend taking this Summoner spell when you’re against a heavy CC team comp. You should take this if either the enemy Mid-laner or Jungler has CC where they can layer it. For example against a Lissandra/Elise combo.

3.png Exhaust: Take this when you’re against Assassins. If you exhaust the enemy when they jump on you, then their initial burst will be reduced- saving you.

14.png Ignite: Take Ignite when you’re in a favourable matchup. If you have high kill potential against your enemies you can poke them down, fight and then finally Ignite them. Ignite is very high risk high reward as you will be lacking a defensive Summoner. Take this in lanes where you’re in a favourable matchup.

21.png Barrier: Barrier is like Heal. It will save you against high burst damage laners such as Syndra or Vladimir. Barrier is on a short cooldown and can save you. Beware when it’s down you will need to play slightly safer. I recommend taking Barrier in unfavourable matchups where the enemy is stronger.

New Runes Back to Top

For Zoe I recommend taking Sorcery as the main Rune tree. This is because she uses her abilities often and is a mid-lane Mage.

Arcane%20Comet.png?width=32 Arcane Comet is a very good Rune on her because it allows her to deal extra damage through her abilities. This also makes the enemy have to play more defensively when she uses her abilities because of the Comet damage.

Manaflow%20Band.png?width=32Manaflow Band is a next on her because it will allow us to sustain more and allow us to use some of our abilities more freely. Like any mid-laner, she will run OOM when you spam them.

Transcendence.png?width=32 Transcendence is the next as it gives you free cooldown reduction at level 10. This is really helpful as it allows you to use your abilities more freely. This is also a very good rune and works hand in hand with Manaflow Band.

Scorch.png?width=32 Scorch is the next and final Rune because it does burning damage. This is really good as it allows you to deal more damage throughout the laning phase and team fights.

For the secondary Rune tree I recommend Domination.

Eyeball%20Collection.png?width=32 Eyeball collection and Relentless Hunter are both very good and will allow Zoe to be more of a nuisance and a pain for the enemy. Eyeball collection grants free AP.

Relentless%20Hunter.png?width=32 Relentless Hunter gives you movement speed. Extra movement speed is hard to come by, taking it and getting kills will allow you to roam quicker, get to lane quicker and overall make you faster out of combat.

Zoe’s Passive is More Sparkles

After casting an ability, Zoe’s next basic attack or bubble within 5 seconds deal bonus magic damage.

Screenshot_1.png

Zoe’s Q is Paddle Star

First Cast: Zoe hurls a star in a target direction dealing magic damage to the first enemy it hits. If the start does not collide with anything, it will remain stationary for up to a second where Zoe can recast it in a different direction.

They will both prime her Passive.

Tips: Your Q ability is the hardest thing to master in your kit. It takes some practise so do not get discouraged if you cannot hit it. While playing Zoe, you may think that this ability is something like Pinball - and I agree! Your Q is very awkward and has to be hit at the right time to recast it. Once recast it will speed up and deal damage to enemies hit. You can perform a lot of cool looking tricks with your Q, such as shooting it behind you then making it shoot in front of you. Beware of the range of this ability. Your Q can be easier to hit because of the recast. A simple combo for Zoe is E Q (Q) , alternatively you can go R E Q.

Zoe's Q deals extra damage depending on distance traveled. If you can get the timing right, you can through it behind her, and shoot it forward. This will deal the added distance travel bonus. Theoretically speaking + 50% damage from behind and up to an added 100% if you shoot it forward.

Timing is everything.

Screenshot_2.png

Zoe’s W is Spell Thief

Passive: Whenever enemies cast spells or item actives they drop a shard on the ground. The shards last for 40 seconds. In some occasions, minions will spawn with shards that can be dropped if they are killed by Zoe.

If you collect a shard you have up to 60 seconds to use it.

Active: Zoe uses the shard she has obtained.

Summoner Specialist Passive: Casting one of her obtained or her own summoner spell, grants her brief bonus movement speed and also summon three bubbles that orbit her. The bubbles hurl themselves to the nearest enemy (prioritizing the one she is attacking) dealing magic damage.

Tips: I recommend picking up any shard that you come across. Remember just because you have that spell- doesn’t mean you have to use it. If you get Teleport, you can recall- buy items and get back to lane swiftly!

Screenshot_3.png

Zoe’s E is Sleepy Trouble Bubble

Zoe puts to sleep any enemies that are hit by this ability. After a brief delay they fall asleep for 2 seconds and all subsequently damage is doubled (limited to one ability/auto attack). The sleepy enemy is awoken early once they receive damage.

The range of this ability is doubled when it passes through terrain. If the ability doesn’t hit anyone, it lingers on the ground as a trap for 4 seconds.

If you put an enemy to sleep, the cooldown will be slightly refunded.

Tips: This is the first Sleep ability in the game. It is very useful and will be the opening for your main engages/ trades. If you’re getting a gank it is important to hit this ability. Wait for your Jungler to get close before following up with damage as the reduction and length of the sleep will be reduced- this may give the enemy time to get away. An example combo would be E + Q, or R + E + Q.

Screenshot_4.png

Zoe’s Ultimate is Portal Jump

Zoe targets a location and dives into a portal blinking to the location. After a short delay she travels back through the portal to her cast location. She can use abilities while she is at the blinked location.

Tips: Your portal isn’t an escape ability. It should only be used to engage on enemies or scout vision. The ability itself is unique however very situational and not always useful. Do not use it to escape, only use it to engage. You can cast abilities after you’ve blinked. This can help you get to enemies quicker and deal damage if they are behind the minion wave. The cooldown is rather short.

While testing this: I can confirm a few things about the interaction of your ultimate. You can Zhonyas and still blink back. You can be binded and still blink back. If you die you will be blinked back. If you are immobilized- guess what? You'll be blinked back!

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Standard Start for AP Mages. Gives AP and sustain.
You could technically take Dorans Shield if you wanted.
Incredibly good sustain start. Very situational though- will lack early damage.

Core Items

This is the first item you need to get on Zoe. It is really good as it allows you to sustain and use your abilities more consistently. It also gives AP/Mana/CDR.
I recommend Sorcerer’s Shoes as it will give you magic penetration that will help you deal damage to enemies in team fights. These are the only boots you should.
This item works well with your passive as it will grant your next auto attack after using an ability to deal extra damage. Lich Bane has good synergy with that!
Your fourth item is going to be Zhonya's Hourglass. This item is really good a it will leave you untargetable in sticky situations. It counters most assassins and burst mages.
Your final two items are going to be Rabadons and Void Staff. Get them in which order you prefer. Void staff is really good as it allows your abilities to deal more damage and Rabadon's gives you more damage
Final Build should look like this

Situational Items

Other items that are viable on Zoe.
If you're against an assassin mid or somebody who does burst damage. You will benefit from an earlier Zhonya's Hourglass
    Defensive items

I recommend always starting Dorans Ring on Zoe as it will give her the damage and sustain she needs early. Your first core item is going to be Morellonomicon. This item is incredibly good and is the first item that most AP Mages buy. Zoe has the same problems as them all and this item will help her sustain and stay in lane for longer. Zoe needs mana and this item will give her it. This item also provides AP and Cooldown reduction.

The second item for Zoe is going to be upgraded boots. I recommend Sorcerer’s Shoes as it will give you magic penetration. Zoe is an AP midlaner and needs Magic Pen to allow her to deal damage. This will not only help her out against tanks but all enemies. Lich bane is your third item. It works well with your passive and synergies with it. This allows you to deal more damage in trades and team fights.

Your fourth item should be Zhonya’s hourglass. This item is good and should be brought because of its passive. This item allows you to be untargetable for 2.5 seconds. This can save you in team fights and I recommend using it on her when you’re in sticky situations.

Alternatively, if you’re against an AD champion like Zed or Talon, you can get Zhonya’s earlier.

Your fifth and sixth items are going to be Rabadon’s Deathcap and Void Staff. These two items will give you more damage, more magic pen, and more reason to be respected. They will allow you to deal more burst damage and be much more of a pain against the enemies.

Your build might look something like this :

3165.png + 3020.png + 3100.png + 3157.png + 3089.png + 3135.png

This is a skill matchup. Beware as they can easily kill you. It is important to dodge their abilities especially his ultimate. You need to be really safe against him as Fizz can easily kill many mages and that included Zoe. Try to abuse them when you can. Use your ultimate to dodge his shark!

VS

Galio

Easy

In this matchup you will need to poke when possible and auto attack them when they come to farm. You should abuse your range advantage and hit them whenever you can. Beware of minion agro however as it does stack up. Try to push the enemy so they cannot roam. This champion relies on roaming. Don’t die and you’ll be good.

Katarina

Hard

This champion has a lot of all in potential. Becareful when fighting against her. Try to not get aggressive as she can easily 0-100 you. Poke her when possible but do not get to aggressive.

Easy

Poke him whenever he comes to CS.Ryze is quiet squishy so use this to your advantage with your poke.

Combos Back to Top

  • Q + Q | Recast your Q in prime time to make it extend and hit the enemy. This combo is good as it will allow you redirect your Q to hit the enemy if they move.
  • E + Q (Q) | Hit the enemy with the sleep followed up by your Q. Do not auto attack the enemy before you use the Q as it will reduce the sleep duration. When you’re getting a gank, hold off from using your Q until your ally is closer.
  • R + Q (Q)| Standard poke combo with your ultimate.
  • R + E + Q (Q)| Ult the enemy to get closer to them, follow up with your sleep and hit them with your Q. This will deal lots of damage and burst them down. Your Q will be easier to hit as they will be immobile.
  • R + Q + E (Q) | This is a good combo because it will put the enemies asleep for when you return. This is however very situational.
  • Q + R + E + Q | Good combo if you can master it. The timing is incredibly important for this one as the margin for error is so small.
Mastering the Q:
Like stated above, timing is everything when using your Q. I've provided a couple examples on how to use your Q.
Because the damage is increased with distance traveled, when using your ultimate you want to shoot your Q in the opposite direction. This should cover the most distance and result in a higher damage dealt to the enemy.

Example One:

The combo shown is R + Q + Q
Example Two:

The Combo shown is R + E + Q + Q

Pros and Cons Back to Top

Pros:

  • High damage output and burst – She has her Q which does lots of damage. She also can use her combos to be extra annoying and deal more damage.
  • Has CC – She can set up ganks.
  • Long range abilities – Her Q is long ranged.
  • Can take towers easily – With her Lichbane, she can easily take towers down.
  • Fun and Vibrant – Unlike some champions, she is really fun to play and learn with.
  • Her W – She can steal Summoner spells from her enemies and gain free Summoners throughout the game.
  • Low cost on Ultimate – The Ultimate is low cost and low cooldown.

Cons:

  • Her W is situational – Her W isn’t always going to be good for you.
  • Steep Learning Curve - She is a friendly champion to learn because of her Q, but she will have a steep learning curve.
  • No escape – Her ultimate cannot be used as an escape.
  • Skill shots – She has two skill shots that are hard to hit.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

  • You can use your ultimate often, however you cannot use it to escape. Only use it when you want to engage on enemies during the laning phase to deal damage or trade.
  • If you pick up teleport with your W, you can recall- buy items and then return with TP.
  • Remember the timer on your W, if you get an offensive spell you can use it on the enemies to help deal damage to them. With that said, if you get a Summoner you do not have to use it.
  • If you’re receiving a gank, try to hit your E on an enemy. Do not follow up with damage as they will wake up.
  • Reverse of receiving a friendly gank, if the enemy is ganking you- hit your E on them and then back off.
  • Once an enemy is asleep, it is important not to auto attack them. Use your Q- this is because the next damage caused to them will be increased. Your Q deals more damage than your auto attacks so it makes sense to hit them with an ability.

Early Game Back to Top

The early game is the most influential part of the game for Zoe. Like many Mid-laners, she has her pros and her cons and she needs a good start to the game to do well.  During the early game it is important to farm and poke the enemies. There are plenty of combo’s you can use on the enemies such as Q+AA+Q / E+Q+Q. Your main goal is to farm up and deny as much as possible. I recommend only using your abilities on the enemy champion and not the minions.

Zoe is very strong level 1 with her Q. It is important not to waste your abilities though and do not spam them. You do not have the greatest mana pool or regeneration so it is important to keep an eye on your mana. Throughout the laning phase you should be looking to auto attack enemies if they miss position. Your E is very good as it can help in receiving ganks. Many Junglers need you to start the gank by CCing the enemy. Your E will put enemies to sleep if you hit them with it. I recommend using your E on them and then waiting for your Jungler to come and help them. The timing here is very crucial- if you auto the enemy or use an ability whilst they are asleep, they will wake up.

At level 1 you want to push for the level 2 (7 minions) while doing this you want to use you Q and hit the enemy champion. After level 2 you can go for more trades because you have your Q and E. At level 3 you will also get your W, however this is very situational and not always useful. If you do get a good spell like teleport, ignite or exhaust then you have up to a minute to use them to your advantage.

Mid/Late Game Back to Top

In the Mid game, Zoe is at her strongest. By now you should have at least your first core item, and possibly even your second or third. During this time, the game will become harder and everyone should start grouping. Before fighting anyone, you need to watch your positioning, your team comp and your cooldowns. Zoe should not flat out fight enemies, instead she needs to poke them.

In the Mid game you want to get objectives such as Dragon or towers. Zoe can easily take towers with her Lich bane so make sure to have good objective control.

During the mid-game you want to follow the enemy, poke when possible, remember to farm, stay active and do not get caught out of position.

In the late game is where Zoe can win or lose fights. It is important to team fight well and not get caught out of position. During this time you need to watch what you’re doing and be pro-active in every step you make. You can easily clear waves with your abilities and push them, however do not waste mana by doing this.

Like stated above, you do not want to fight without poking first. You need to burst and poke down enemies when possible, and make sure your team are with you when you do this. Always check the map before going for a trade. If you see that your team isn’t grouped, ping them and ask them to group up. In most games, grouping will win it. Make sure your team (if possible) can group and nobody gets caught out.

By this stage Baron and Elder may be up. You should only go for them if you can do so safely and it will not be a risky choice. Poke the enemies down if they come and fight them if they do. Do not stay on the objective if they come to fight you, switch targets.

Team fighting Back to Top

Zoe isn’t the strongest team fighter and relies on her team to follow up. While she does CC to start fights, and the burst damage - she will often need the help from her team to follow up for kills. Whenever you go to fight, you want to poke beforehand. This is because Zoe relies on her poke/burst damage to kill enemies. She needs to abuse her Q distance and damage to poke the enemies down before your team fights them. Like I said, your Q is very strong and very unpredictable: for the enemies.

You need to poke before fighting them as Zoe is a poke champion rather than a flat out team fighter.

If possible, try to catch enemies out of position with your E and get the follow up from your team to kill them. Remember your sleep ability and the bonus damage from it, you always want to E Q+Q the enemies.

My Opinion on Zoe Back to Top

Zoe seems like a really fun, mechanically difficult champion, however a very good champion for beginners because of the ability to recast her Q in a different direction. I think she will be really good because of her Q and E. This is the first type of champion with a Sleep mechanic in the game and will hopefully be the first of many.

Her Q:

  • Good as it can be recast in a different direction, will allow beginners to get used to hitting skill shots.

Her W:

  • *Useless unless you get a good Summoner spell. It isn’t worth maxing until last because of the bonus spells.  However is going to be good if you can burn spells from the enemies and get them yourself. Timing is incredibly crucial with this ability.
  • *Not all spells are useless, however this passive is highly situational and realistically not always going to be in your favour.

Her E:

  • Very good ability which will allow you to go for more accurate trades. It will also allow you to help your Jungler gank your lane.

Her Ultimate:

  • A weird one, not always going to be good and useful. I don’t like that it can only be used offensively and not to escape. However it has a short cooldown/cost so it will be good against enemies who are hard to get to and poke in lane.

This is just my opinion on the first look at the champion. What do you think of her?
