Summoner Spells Back to Top

I always run Ignite and here's why: I want to get an advantage in the laning phase so that I can take over 15-20 minutes teamfights and close the game out as soon as possible. Ignite allows me to have extra kill pressure against my opponents, anyway since Exhaust can be a better lategame spell against assassins/low range burst champions, I would consider taking it in lower elos if you don't feel confident enough to snowball the early game (also low elo games usually last more).

New Runes Back to Top

I use either P1 or P2 (page 1/2) for 90%+ of my games, here's an explaination for each rune:

DOMINATION primary:
Electrocute: alright this is a big one, why Electrocute instead of Comet? I know that most people run Comet on Zyra but I just don't like it that much, making good use of Comet means that you pretty much have to use your spells on CD, the reason I don't like it is that, especially in higher elos, people tend to punish your positioning mistakes. So I'd be using my Q much more often if I went Comet, meaning that I'd have to spend more time in Q range. Now, Q range is 800, and it's more than enough for a lot of supports to flash-engage (Leona, Thresh, Taric, etc.), I just feel safer with Electrocute since I have to wait for the right moment to burst the enemies down and I can stay further back in the lane. Also, Comet shines in the lategame because you get to do more damage in teamfights, but here's the point: I don't want to go lategame with Zyra, most of my games end around the 25 minutes mark, my playstyle is all around picking enemies out of position and forcing objectives with the pressure my team gets from said picks. So I just find Electrocute to fit my playstyle much better than Comet does.
Taste of blood : really good in lane, procs on auto-attacks so that it denies some of the minions' damage you're going to take from harassing your opponents in the early levels. It's just better than Cheap Shot especially if you consider that its true damage is only applied after the target is CC'd, so your E won't proc it by itself, you need plants for it.
Eyeball collection: you get it fairly easily destroying wards and I love free AP so I usually get it unless the enemy has a really strong early game jungler (Lee Sin and such), in that case I run Zombie Ward so that I can be safer during the laning phase.
I really REALLY like Relentless Hunter, I think movement speed is a really important/rare stat in the game so I value it a lot, it's like having 3117.png except you don't actually have to buy that piece of crap.
RESOLVE secondary:
I'm just in love with the Bone Plating + Chrysalis combo BUT they just nerfed the bonus health you get from Resolve secondary from 65 to 15-135 which makes it so that I'd only use these runes if I were against a Leona or Alistar, any scary matchup with no poke at all, mostly because Bone Plating is really good in those situations.

SORCERY secondary:
I'd normally only go Sorcery secondary if my laning power is far superior than the enemies' and I'm certain I can snowball really hard with the help of Scorch (an example would be Cait-Zyra vs Vayne-Soraka) but Riot just nerfed Resolve and buffed Manaflow band so Domination+Sorcery is my default rune page now.
Manaflow Band: they just buffed it and it looks really good, even if I usually don't run OOM on Zyra, this new version is straight up good and it's definitely my go-to rune unless I need Nullifying Orb.
Nullifying Orb: this is just a really good rune whenever you're against an heavy AP teamcomp.
Transcendence: pretty good rune if the enemy team doesn't have a lot of magic damage and I'm playing in a passive lane so that I don't really need the extra mana from MfB, 10% extra CDR is just good.
Scorch: If you're running Sorcery, ALWAYS GO SCORCH.

SORCERY primary:
Let's start saying that I do not like Sorcery as my primary rune tree, the main reason is that I don't want to ever give up Relentless Hunter and if I get Domination secondary I'd feel forced to give up Bone%20Plating.png?width=32+5abd57da0f30230001f3edd9?width=32  which is a really good combo in certain matchups.
So, when is Comet better than Electrocute? Mostly in super hard match-ups (Cait+Brand for instance) where I just can't afford to ever walk up to auto-attack my opponents or I will die (sure you can proc Electrocute with E+2 plants, but is not as reliable as Q+W+AA or Comet proc with plants).

For those who were wondering, yes, I do value laning phase A LOT.

I almost always max E first, here's why:
1. Better waveclear.
2. More kill pressure.
3. Less mana expenditure (since you'll be going for all in more than poke)
4. Better synergy with your ADC's CC (Caitlyn's traps, Varus/Ashe's ult), better gank-follow up, ganks set-up and disingage.

There are a few cases where I don't max E:
1. I max Q against Braum since he can block my E & against Tahm Kench because most TK wait for their ADC to get rooted before eating them.
2. I split points between E and Q (prioritizing E) during the laning phase against Sivir, since I don't know which spell she's going to block, I don't want to put all the eggs in one basket.
3. I max Q if I'm against a good Morgana (meaning that I see that she always menages to shield my E).

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Core Items

Core items (Wards + Magic Penetration early game powerspike)
If you don't always have a control ward placed and/or a control ward in your inventory after 10 minutes you're doing something wrong.

Situational Items

I'm going to go over each item explaining when to buy it and why.

CORE

3098.png: You play support, supports need wards. 3098.png is actually a strong powerspike for Zyra, always get this item first unless you went back with enough gold to buy 3020.png as long as you have money for at least 1 potion and possibly a control ward.

3020.png: Rush this item right after 3098.png or even as your first item if you got extra money from killing your opponents in lane, 18 magic penetration is a really huge powerspike, you can 100-0 any squishy lvl 6 with only 3020.png and Ignite.
Also, no, I never ever go 3117.png instead of 3020.png.
3916.png: This is your 2600 gold powerspike (3020.png+3916.png), at this point you can really take over games thru mid-game teamfights.

These 3 items should ALWAYS BE BUILT FIRST, the only scenario where you want to skip 3916.png is if you got sh*t on so hard that your damage is gonna be worthless anyway so you want to get some utility for your team ASAP, building 3116.png earlier or upgrading 3098.png to 3092.png  so that you can get more wards down and be a little tankier.

SITUATIONAL/LATEGAME ITEMS

3116.png: Rylai's got buffed and 3151.png got changed so I'd say 3116.png is pretty much a core item unless you have to itemize for certain enemies

-IMPORANT NOTE: this is your strongest powerspike as Zyra support, by this point, if you and your team are doing well and you have 3098.png3020.png3916.png3116.png you should be closing the game out.
3165.png: upgrade 3916.png to 3165.png  right away only if the enemy team has A LOT of AOE healings (16.png,40.png,203.png
). You'll upgrade it as your last item (before upgrading3098.png to 3092.png ) even if they have single target healing champions like Volibear, Vladimir, Swain, Nami etc. since your Ignite can take care of them.

3151.png: I know that a lot of people still love and rush this item, I just don't like it that much anymore since it doesn't really fit the burst mage playstyle I use, it only provides damage so I'd only get it after all the utility/defensive items I need (90% of my games end before buying it). The only scenario where I'd get 3151.png instead of 3116.png after I've built my core items (listed above) is if I'm against a lot of HP stacking tanks and I need raw damage more than i need slows (I'm talking about Cho'Gath top and Sejuani/Olaf jungle with a Tahm Kench support). It's imporant to note that having 3151.png increases your damage to Baron by 20ish % so that's nice.
3135.png: Nothing special to say about Void Staff, good item when the enemy team start stacking MR, definitely not worth it to penetrate squishies' base MR, in that case 3151.png does way more damage.

3102.png: This item doesn't get the attention it deserves, not only it's a pretty good item for its stats alone (95% cost efficient WITHOUT ITS PASSIVE), 3102.png is, IMO, a really good 4th situational item, I love it against 22.png53.png105.png54.png497.png113.png110.png154.png especially if my team doesn't have a real frontline or if I'm against a full AP comp. Trust me, not getting destroyed by hard engage is worth giving up some damage.

3157.png:  Pretty much the armor equivalent of 3102.png, really good situational item vs assassins or full AD comps in general. 3157.png also allows you to play more aggressively and go for flash engages knowing that you can use it right after and possibly bait some of the enemies' big CD.

3092.png: Good item, 1 more ward is useful and the extra stats it gives are worth the money, I just never feel the need to upgrade it unless it's my last item or, as I said before, I'm really getting sh*t on and I need more vision/tankiness.
Sometimes I get it if I'm ahead, I know that i can close the game out soon and I need a powerspike, whatever it is (this happens if I don't have a slot for another item and I just happen to have around 1k gold).

3905.png: I'm not going to lie, I used to LOVE this item back in Season 5 when it gave 80 AP, 10% CDR, 6% MS and the same active it has now EXCEPT the ghosts would try to return to the wielder if they failed to hit a champion and reduce its active's cooldown by 40 seconds each, which along with the old utility masteries meant that you could spam the spooky ghosts with a 7(ish) seconds cooldown if both of them failed to find their target, making facechecks the last thing you'd have to worry about. This new version, however, is simpy bad; same price, 20 less AP, 1% more movement speed and no CDR on its active makes it so that I would only build it if my team had no frontline whatsoever and I had to play against a pick teamcomp with 53.png60.png etc. and even then I feel like rushing 3102.png and checking bushes with seeds and E (you know, if you get gold out of 3098.png then there's at least 1 enemy there) would be better. So at the end of the day I'd really only get it if I don't feel safe enough with 3102.png, but I can't shake the feeling that 3905.png is not a good item.

2065.png: I know Shurelya's not an item that fits Zyra's kit and it's weird that it makes its appearance in this list but hear me out; 2065.png is one of those item that you hardly ever need but when you do need it, it feels really good to have.
So when do you need it? Glad you asked. I like 2065.png when all my lanes do well but my teamcomp is not really good, we don't have engage but we can afford to simply run down the enemy team because we're all so far ahead, it gets better the more melees you have on your team. I also like it when the enemy team has a lot of melees who can avoid CC and our carries (Zyra, the ADC and Midlaner) have really low mobility to help us kite them (love it against Olaf since you can't CC him during his ult).
Also the item is 94% cost efficient without its active (which is actually impressive considering that you pretty much get it for the active), it's cheap and it gives useful stats for Zyra.

VS

Alistar

Hard

The most important thing to do against Alistar is to poke him with AA at lvl 1 when he doesn't have his W+Q combo yet, he'll have to walk up to get 3302.png stacks so you'll get free gold (3303.png) and damage on him.

Building a heath lead at lvl 1 is really important since if you get him low enough, he won't be able to hit his combo on you (although his Headbutt has 650 range opposed to your 575 AA range) or he'll just die.
You need to respect his engage and be really careful not to ever be in his W+Q range, his flash engage is really powerful and can set up ganks really easily. It's worth noticing that Alistar is usually the champion I ban because in high elo they can set up dives even before lvl 6 with the aid of the jungler, the difference between Alistar and other tanks is that if he combos you under tower during a dive you're dead; and the only way to not die is if you flash his combo and even if that's easy to do, he will not take tower aggro this way so that he forced your flash and lost nothing for it, meaning that you're a free kill when his combo is back up.

VS

Annie

Easy

Zyra outranges Annie, that's all you need to know about this matchup, simply poke her, be careful when her stun is up and DO NOT stay really close to your ADC once she's 6 since her burst + CC with infernalguardian.png is extremely dangerous.

(Nobody plays annie support anymore, I just can't find the option to remove her from the matchups).

VS

Ashe

Medium

Alright so: first of all, never trade AA with Ashe.

Stand behind minions to avoid her W poke and be ready to flash her ultimate, if you're sure her jungler is not around, your best bet is to wait for her ultimate and flash towards her to avoid it and be in a good position to land your combo. Sometimes I go 1.png against Ashe if she has a support like Thresh and a jungler like Sejuani or anything that Cleanse can be good against before lvl 6, the reason why I didn't list it as one of the summoner spells to take is that I really trust my ability to instantly cleanse a CC if it hits me so I like it because I know that I can make really good use of it but I wouldn't suggest a low elo player to take it unless they feel like it.

VS

Bard

Medium

Don't trade AA with Bard, range is your big advantage in this matchup, be careful when you're standing behind your minions and go ham if he misses his Q, always spawn 2 E plants right in front of him when you menage to hit your root so that if he tries to Q, he'll stun the plants instead.

Always be careful when you don't see him in lane since he can set up really good lane ganks when he's playing on red side.

VS

Blitzcrank

Medium

If blitz lands his grab he wins, if he doesn't you win. Don't let him zone you, if he walks up you always want to root him and spawn plants right in front of him to block his grab. Keep in mind that lvl 1 Q has a 20 seconds CD, if he misses it you can harass him for free.

Very important: if you see that his Q is gonna land, flash before it hits you, you're gonna have to flash anyway but you'll save some health this way.

VS

Braum

Medium

Braum's quite annoying, he can block your E (this is way you max Q against him), his W gives a decent amount of flat MR, which can reduce your full combo damage by a lot and has really good set up for ganks, he just needs to Q+Flash on you and you're pretty much dead, even if you can pressure Braum I set the matchup to medium since he can enable certain ADCs (Tristana, Lucian or even Ezreal) just by landing his Q.

VS

Caitlyn

Hard

Caitlyn's not an easy matchup, she's a lane bully and can easily push the wave with a few point in Q, her AA poke is gonna hit your ADC hard. Don't ever AA her, watch out for her passive and walk back when it's up until she has to last hit with it. Check bushes with seeds so that you don't step on a trap. Anyway if Cait doesn't respect you enough and allows you to push her in, you can easily kill her after lvl 6 since her dash is rather clunky.

VS

Corki

Medium

Seriously I need to find the delete matchup option...

VS

Draven

Medium

This is a really snowbally matchup that can go either way, you don't want to trade AA with him. The only trick against Draven is to use your Root where his Spinning Axe (Q) falls since he's likely to go there, this is a win-win situation, you either hit your spells and root him or you deny him his axe which is a big portion of his damage.

VS

Ezreal

Medium
Stand behind your creeps and keep in mind that his lvl 1 E has 19 seconds CD and 90 mana cost, keep track of his mana pool to know when he can't dash away.
One good trick against Ezreal once he's 6 is to wait untill he's casting his ult (maybe to clear wave or poke) and flash / combo him when he's stuck in his R animation. Once you have 3020.png and 14.png your damage should be enough to kill him even if he dashes away afterwards.

Ezreal is kind of annoying because he can play really passive and allow his ADC to roam without getting denied CS and Zyra is just not good at matching other supports' roams.

VS

Graves

Easy

Seriously someone tell me where the delete matchup option is

VS

Janna

Medium

Don't trade with her lvl 1, W start with aery is really strong on her. You have some kill pressure after lvl 4 when she goes for W poke and you menage to root her with Ignite. After lvl 6 she should be a free kill anytime you hit your E and Ignite is up. Obviously Janna can decide to play passive and deny you any lane advantage, in that case you just push the lane and pressure the tower, if Janna shields the tower you can try to go for some damage on her or the ADC and viceversa.

VS

Jinx

Easy

Jinx is a scaling ADC with no mobility so her laning phase is rather weak, she has to CS with Rocket Lancher if she doesn't want to get poked down but she'll eventually run out of mana so you can abuse that. (be careful not to stand too close to your creeps when she last hit with rockets to avoid the splash damage)

VS

Kai'Sa

Medium

The only reason why this matchup is set to medium (instead of hard) is that Kai'Sa has a really low range for an ADC (525) so you can easily poke her down early on with AA and Q, going comet is definitely good against her since she has a movement speed buff that make good Kai'Sa players easily avoid your E. Her W poke in lane is really strong and at 6 she has the tools to outplay you (you need to make sure not to get hit at all so that she can't jump to you). Also her Q instantly kill your plants so she's got that going for her...which is nice.

VS

Kalista

Medium

Kalista has good mobility but her AA range is low and nobody really play her nowadays, she can save her support with R but you should be able to abuse her during the early lvls, especially if you go comet and harass her with plants and AA. Rylai's really good against Kalista since it slows her dash animation between AA.

VS

Karma

Medium

Don't get pushed in against Karma, that's how you lose the matchup. She beats you before lvl 4 and after that you should have an advantage. Not much to say here, if you hit your E you win, if you don't she wins.

VS

Kog'Maw

Easy

Laning against Kog is quite easy, play around his W CD, meaning that you don't want to fight him when he's using it and you can abuse him when it's down. (you have a 9 seconds window after he's just used it and before it's back up)

VS

Leona

Hard

Alright this matchup is easy to explain: she lands E on you, you lose the trade; she lands E on your ADC, you might win the trade if you go on her ADC (do not waste cooldowns on her especially when she has aftershock's bonus resistances up). She can set up ganks by flashing on you/your ADC but doesn't have great peeling without putting her own life at risk so I definitely think that your jungler can help you win and snowball this matchup. Get Banshee's early on, it's a really good counter against Leona's R.

VS

Lulu

Medium

Resolve secondary is really good in this lane since most Lulu's go for small trades instead of poking (Bone Plating is really good to reduce some of her E+Q combo), I wouldn't waste mana try to harass her before lvl 4 since her E+Aery shield is quite powerful early on (unless she has terrible postioning). Keep in mind that Grevious Wounds doesn't reduce Lulu R's healing.

VS

Miss Fortune

Hard

The most annoying thing about MF is that her AA actually one shot your plants since each auto hits twice (AA+passive), also she has decent poke with Q and E, has high movement speed with her W and can stand far back in teamfights and only use R to deal insane damage. Definitely a hard matchup, reason why she used to be picked in the support role as a Zyra counter. A good MF can be really good into Zyra, there's no special strategy against her besides working with your team to gangbang her.

VS

Morgana

Medium

Dodge her Q and you're supposed to win the lane, you have more kill pressure and pushing power even if Morg can shield your Root, since Riot changed DOT damage not to instantly kill plants this matchup has gone a lot better.

VS

Nami

Medium

Don't trade against nami before lvl 4 unless she has really poor positioning and you're lucky with your passive's RNG, after lvl 4 you have some kill pressure with E and Ignite, her healings can be annoying but your range is higher and she's not that hard to kill with Electrocute and E max. (try to avoid small trades against her since her W heals her up and bounces back to you, look for all in opportunities instead).

VS

Nautilus

Medium

Seriously... who plays this guy anymore?

VS

Quinn

Easy

Nobody plays her bot anymore, anyway low range and low mobility speaks for itself.

VS

Sivir

Medium

Split points between Q and E against Sivir (I like to prioritize E, meaning that my abilities order goes Q>W>E>E>Q>R etc.) since you don't know which spell she's going to shield, you expect her to always block your E but if a smart notices you're maxing Q she's just going to shield it instead. Do not hug your minions so that you won't be hit by her Ricochet (W) and play with your team to capitalize on her lack of mobility before lvl 6.

VS

Sona

Medium

Zyra outranges Sona, play around that, also her ult has a cast animation so you can flash it even from melee range with some practice. I set the difficulty to medium but considering that Sona is in a pretty bad spot right now, it's probably an easy matchup, just like all the healing supports, don't bother poking her and wait for the right opportunity to 100-0 Sona or the ADC.

VS

Soraka

Easy

Her Q is really easy to dodge, you have a lot of pressure so you either kill her or pressure the enemy tower since she can't really push back. Especially with the latest Ignite buffs, I don't consider soraka a threat. Rush Morello.

VS

Tahm Kench

Hard

A good tahm is really hard to deal with, eats the ADC when they're in danger of dying and has really good gank set up especially if he runs Glacial Augment (Glacial%20Augment.png?width=32). I like to max Q since most TK wait for the ADC to get rooted before eating them. Liandry definitely a good item against him since his E basically gives him more max health.

VS

Taric

Hard

Crazy amount of tankiness/healing (especially when Taric runs Guardian), you can't really poke him with AA without risking to die since his stun has 575 range and his R counters yours in teamfights, especially if he gets 3190.png+3107.png to block your initial burst.

I think a good Taric will always win against a good Zyra in the laning phase, he won't necessarily kill you but he makes the 2v2 botlane extremely hard and he can set up ganks really well with stun+flash combo.

VS

Thresh

Medium

Zyra - Thresh is a skillmatchup but I'd say it's more in Thresh's favor, he can set up ganks really easily with Lantern + flash Flay, you're also forced to use Flash if ever hooks you but he's rather squishy early on so you definitely want to abuse that, don't let him zone you when he walks up, he'll take a lot of damage since his base resistances aren't that high.

VS

Tristana

Medium

Zyra - Tristana is a really snowbally matchup that can go either way, if she's fed and has a support who can enable her (Braum for example) she'll have a lot of kill pressure. You definitely want to get a lead in the early game against her since her lvl 1 range is only 525 now and she scales really well.

VS

Twitch

Medium

I set the difficulty on Medium because even tho Twitch doesn't really shine in the early game and is rather squishy with no mobility he can snowball super hard if he gets ahead so you want to be particularly careful not to die to ganks.

VS

Varus

Medium

There's no particular strategy against Varus, he's just an overall well rounded ADC with a good laning and a strong lvl 6 powerspike, his only weakness is his lack of mobility so it's easy to understand that you need to hit your abilities to beat him.

VS

Vayne

Easy

You absolutely have to abuse Vayne during the early game since she can't contest the push, you want to constantly shove her in and harass her under tower, building a lead before she gets her items.

General thoughts about matchups and botlane Back to Top

Let's start off by saying that I'm strictly thinking about the laning phase when I rate the difficulty of a matchup, so I'll consider Vayne an easy matchup because Zyra beats her in lane even tho sho'll destroy you in the lategame.

Another thing I want to point out is that you can win any matchup in botlane if the enemies don't play well since Zyra is really good at punishing positioning mistakes, that's why I may consider certain matchups harder than they are in lower elos because I'm taking into account that the enemy (support or ADC) is playing their champion to its full potential.

I also consider "not a good matchup" any support that can easily set up ganks just by flashing in (Leona, Thresh's flash+E, Taric, Alistar, etc.), obviously the counter to that would be not pushing at all and sitting under tower but that would mean that you can't really poke at all since poking automatically pushes the wave which makes the whole Zyra pick kinda senseless.

General tips for botlane:

I feel like people underestimate Zyra's AA, her range is 575 so you can outrange most ADCs, going for AA poke against low range ADCs is a really good strategy, you can abuse it especially if the enemy support is not a threat to you by auto-attacking the enemy ADC exactly when you know they're going to last hit, so that you can either hit them for free or force them to cancel an auto attack to hit you back, making them miss creeps. Remember to drop minions aggro by getting into a not warded bush or out of their range.
Always keep track of the enemy support 3302.png amount of stacks to know when they're going to kill a cannon and punish them for it. (generally playing around creeps is really good, ADC tend to overextend for cannons even if they can't afford to especially in lower elos.)

It's kind of hard to think about general tips since every game is different and requires a specific playstyle, but hopefully I'll start streaming soon so that I can explain what I do and why.

I want to point out that this is my way of playing Zyra, I don't think it's the only one but it's the one that fits my playstlye the most and I found success with it.

Also there would be A LOT more to say about Zyra, the support role and the game in general but I want to keep this guide focused on Zyra and her builds more than playstyle and macroplay which are really hard to explain in a guide since every game is different and every player plays differently.
Last, a few words about me:

I'm a Zyra support one trick who started playing the champion in season 3, I'm currently Master Tier in EUW soloq http://www.lolskill.net/summoner/EUW/Dezyrable and I'm looking forward to start streaming soon.
