Summoner Spells Back to Top

  • 4.png Flash is mandatory for the added mobility. It's a versatile spell that can help you with escaping, repositioning, and initiating.
  • 12.png Teleport is a great summoner spell for providing pressure on other lanes, control objectives, and defend towers.
  • 6.png Ghost is a strong spell for teamfights that allows you to quickly reposition and move out of harm's way.
  • 3.png Exhaust is a good choice for the added safety if you are against an assassin, and is great for shutting down strong enemies in teamfights.
  • 14.png Ignite is good for snowballing a matchup and provides extra damage to finish off enemies throughout the game. Also useful for getting double kills when the enemy jungler ganks.
  • 21.png7.png Heal and Barrier are similar defensive summoner spells, but are less effective than Exhaust for surviving tough assassin matchups. They aren't needed against long ranged champs as long as you have good positioning.
  • 1.png Cleanse is good for some matchups, but shouldn't be needed with good positioning. Also, if you don't use it often it's easy to get out of practice with it.
  • 11.png We aren't jungling! 
The summoner spell I personally take in the large majority of my games is Teleport, though the other options are strong alternatives and you should adjust based on your confidence in the matchup and your playstyle. Teleport is a versatile option that fits any playstyle. It can let you sustain better in lane against a hard-harassing enemy by letting you quickly get back to lane, or allow you to get kills in other lanes when they extend too far.

Exhaust is a strong spell that is best against assassins and bruisers, but is a viable option in any game. Though it may seem like a passive summoner spell, having it in your possession can allow you to play more aggressively. Every game will have a marksman which can be greatly shut down through Exhaust, and it can help save you in dangerous situations.

Ignite is a spell that is best for if you are confident you can snowball early. If you play aggressively and aim for kills, it can allow you to obtain them more easily. Its usefulness compared to other summoner spells usually falls off later in the game, unless the enemy team has a healing champ.

Ghost is a versatile summoner spell that allows you to play more aggressively in teamfights due to the movement speed it provides as well as help to save you from dangerous situations. However, note that it has little usefulness in lane and can put you at a disadvantage.

ALTERNATIVE RUNES: Stopwatch can be taken instead of Magical Footwear against assassins or burst mages. Ultimate Hat can be taken instead of Manaflow Band if you don't need the extra mana for early laning. Nullifying Orb can also replace Manaflow Band in a dangerous AP matchup. Transcendence can be taken instead of Celerity if you prefer bonus CDR. 

The standard page is a great choice for any situation. Arcane Comet is the best damage rune for Zyra with its cooldown being lowered every time damage is dealt. Manaflow Band allows you to more freely use spells to harass and push the wave in lane, Celerity gives you extra movement speed needed to reposition between spell casts, and Scorch provides extra damage. In the secondary tree, Magical Footwear is taken to give more movement speed and save some gold, and Minion Dematerializer is taken to quickly push minion waves.


The roaming page is similar to the standard page, but takes Waterwalking instead of Scorch. It's best for when you're in an uninteractive lane or against a roaming champion, allowing you to push quickly and reach other lanes faster. 


Electrocute is great for when you are facing melee champions that you can easily proc it on. Taste of Blood helps you to sustain in lane and win more trades. Zombie Ward provides extra vision, helping keep you safe as an immobile mage. Relentless Hunter allows you to maneuver around the map more quickly. However, Ravenous Hunter is a fine alternative, providing extra sustain. Ingenious Hunter can also be taken in situations where you need Zhonya's Hourglass up more often.


note: Though these pages are great for all situations, some runes may need to be switched to have an optimal rune page for the game. Based on your team and the enemy team, make decisions about what runes you need most.

Zyra's build order is highly based on preference and playstyle. I prefer maxing E first for better burst, waveclear, and CC duration, but Q max or a mix of Q and E is a viable option if you prefer more reliable damage.

Passive: Garden of Thorns

Zyra's passive, Garden of Thorns passively spawns seeds around Zyra periodically. It's disabled in bush in order to help Zyra successfully pull off ambushes. While the seed spawning is RNG, there are certain factors that will affect the area seeds spawn in. Seeds have a tendency to spawn near jungle entrances and in nearby bushes. Zyra can have up to 8 seeds planted and they last for 30 seconds each. In the laning phase, keep seeds spawned in areas that the enemy jungler could potentially come from. This will allow you to spawn plants and deter the jungler from that area. In mid and late game, spawn seeds around while sieging in order to zone and counterengage and around to provide control over Dragon and Baron.

Q: Deadly Spines 

Zyra's Q, Deadly Spines is a ranged skillshot that deals damage in a rectangle AoE after a short delay. If there is a nearby seed, it creates a long range Thorn Spitter with that damages enemies. It applies spell effects such as Rylai's, Ludens, and Liandry's. Zyra's Q is mainly useful in the early game for spawning plants, and does nice poke damage in conjunction with plants+autos without being leveled first. Also provides AoE damage and plants to zone in teamfights. This is the basic ability that should be maxed second, after E.

W: Rampant Growth

Zyra's W, Rampant Growth, places a seed on the ground that lasts for 60 seconds and provides vision in a small area. Zyra can hold 2 seeds at a time and they can be destroyed by enemies walking over them. Zyra's W is the basic ability maxed last because it does not provide any more damage or CC as it levels up, making it not as necessary as Q or E.

E: Grasping Roots

Zyra's E, Grasping Roots is a slow traveling linear skillshot that deals AoE damage and roots all enemies it hits. Unlike many other skillshots that pass through enemies, Zyra's E does not lose any damage or CC duration for every enemy it hits. Zyra's E is great for picking off enemies and setting up her combo. Try to use it over walls so that enemies can't react quickly, or send it through to the backline in a chaotic teamfight and burst their squishies. If it passes by a nearby seed, the seed will turn into a Vine Lasher, a plant that deals damage and slows enemies but has a short range. E is the basic ability maxed first because of the increased CC duration which keeps enemies in your ultimate and plants longer, greatly increasing her early kill potential. 

R: Stranglethorns

Zyra's R, Stranglethorns is a ranged spell that deals damage as it spreads out into a large circle AoE from the origin. After a delay, it will knockup all enemies inside. Zyra's ultimate is amazing for teamfighting, disengaging, setting up a combo, or providing large burst. It also respawns your plants with full HP and increases their DPS by boosting their damage dealt by 50%. Zyra's ultimate is leveled up at levels 6, 11, and 16 for the increased damage and reduced cooldown.

Starting Items

    Good start for any matchup.

Core Items

    Good sustain in early/mid game.
    First item to build. Provides a good amount of AP, CDR, and a damage passive that helps with waveclearing, poking, and bursting.
    Extra flat penetration and movement speed.
    Provides much needed HP, some AP, and flat magic penetration, synergizing with Luden's Echo and Zyra's base damages to give extra damage.
    High amount of AP along with a great amount of movement speed that helps you to quickly maneuver around the map and reposition. Gain charges primarily by being with your team, and use before a burst combo or your ultimate. The active movement speed can also help with escaping.
    Purchase both, order depending on the enemy team's magic resistance. Rabadon is often the best choice, synergizing with the AP from Spellbinder. However, if multiple people on the enemy team have built magic resistance, or if the main enemy threat has built lots of magic resistance, Void Staff should be bought before.

Situational Items

    Rush if having trouble against a Fizz, Zed, or other dangerous assassin. Can also be built if needed when the enemy team focuses you heavily. Helpful for baiting enemy team into overextending and allows you to make more plays.
    Build as needed if you require the extra peel for carries and survivability.
    Can be upgraded from Oblivion Orb as needed against a team with large amounts of healing or an ADC with a large amount of lifesteal. If you don't need Morellonomicon and you only have one slot left, sell Oblivion Orb for another item.
    Best against a tanky team or if fights last a long time, allowing you to output more damage in sustained periods.

Note: I rarely build Zhonya's on Zyra. If you absolutely need it to survive, you can build it. The time at which you should build it depends on how urgently you need it to survive.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

- Use W for vision in unwarded bushes
- Always cast W after your Q or E so that you don't telegraph where you will cast your spells to your opponent
- Try to ult after or during summoning plants so that they respawn with full hp and 50% bonus damage
- Use plants to apply spell affects such as Luden's, Rylai's, Liandry's, Arcane Comet, and Scorch for extra poke
- Block enemy skillshots using plants (especially E which can set up plants faster than Q) by using E in the direction of the enemy and casting W between yourself and them to block the skillshot
- Cast E through walls to make it harder for enemies to react to and dodge
- Detonate enemy traps by spawning plants in the area
- Use plants to take jungle camps over walls
