Summoner Spells Back to Top

The only two choices, flash for initiations/getting away/chasing. Smite for obvious reasons.

Thoughts on ghost: Nop. Why? You cannot possibly be able to waltz through the entire enemy front line to reach the backline where your ult targets are. You don't need ghost with your W speed-up aswell as the new passive stun, flash enables chasing way better than ghost will, especially if fighting at areas where obstacles provide flash destinations.

Runes Back to Top

  • 9x
+1.7% attack speed Greater Mark of Attack Speed
  • 9x
+0.16 magic resist per level Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist
  • 9x
+1 armor Greater Seal of Armor
  • 3x
+4.5% attack speed Greater Quintessence of Attack Speed

Attack speed for faster clears and it synergizes really well with your passive on Q (reduced cd when landing an attack), and therefor is the obvious choice for stickyness, damage and cc respectively.

Armor to stay alive in the jungle.

Scaling magic resist to become beefier the longer the game goes on.

AS quints+marks after 4.10 because the attack speed is just way too valuable for clear times and dps.

You can also choose to go 9/21/0 if you prefer the extra damage over buff dur+summoner spell cd.

Q first for clear and dmg, 1 point in E for the slow, W for the MS.

After 4.10 i don't see the skill order changing much. After trying a couple of games, W seems to be the way to go 2nd. Also tried going 1-1 each level, which also works okay.

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

Machete to start with for the faster and safer clear.
    FOR SUSTAIN
I usually tend to grab warding trinket to drop a few early wards to protect your jungle/ward their jungle/drake and then proceed to swap to sweeper around level 9 to gain vision control
Cinderhulk is still #1, stalkers blade for the extra stickyness as you do not need railblazer for clears.

Core Items

Self explanatory. Movement speed is king
If you're miles ahead of everyone after completing cinderhulk+boots.

Situational Items

Fed ad=tabi mr+tenacity=mercury ganks!=mobility I will nearly always go mobility and then swap out to tabi or mercury later on.
This should be your core most games; a great mix of damage and resistances and hp. Makes you extremely bulky and disruptive.
    Vs heavy AD damage
THE AP CARRIES ARE TOO FED=GET THESE
You want either homeguard or distortion, depending on the situation. Boot enchants should be got as a last resort unless you need to desperately defend.
    Example Full Build
A very good item for engages and a viable rush after your sheen item (TF/IG)

It all comes down to choice. Does your team need damage? If so, get a Wit's End/Gauntlet.  Are you getting superfed? Get tanky items with Gauntlet+Wit's End/trinity. Do you need a supporty jungler?

You have to play to realize when to buy what, since Skarner has many build paths, and none of them will be optimal in 100% of your games.

VS

Aatrox

Medium

Good clear+sustain, decent damage but very squishy. In teamfights you can simply grab him if he decides to Q in and he'll be dealt with accordingly.

VS

Alistar

Easy

Not much to say here, he will gank your lanes, you will either counter the ganks with your own or counterjungle him. He has 0 kill potential on you, but you can't kill him either if he plays his cards correctly. Try to get a ward on his wraiths and invade his red lvl 2, providing you got a smiteless blue yourself.

VS

Amumu

Easy

Easy matchup. You can even look to kill him at his red at level 2! Amumu is very weak early, but don't underestimate him. If he has higher hp he might kill you, so be careful. You both have playmaking abilities, just try your best to counterjungle him and make his life hell.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

A pretty decent matchup, similar playstyles but he relies on skillshots for his disruption. Your ult is also more clutch than his, use this to your advantage. You should beat him in a 1v1.

VS

Diana

Easy

Diana has nothing on you. You can permaslow her to death pre 6, and after 6 she still won't do enough damage to scratch you. Go offensive counterjungling as soon as you can, since she will want to reach level 6 as soon as she can. You need to stop her!

VS

Dr. Mundo

Medium

Mundo goes where he pleases? Guess he forgot about your perma-slow! You need to go offensive on mundo at his red. Mundos like to do their jungle low, so pounce him when he will least expect it! His ganks are quite strong if he can get in range, and he becomes extremely tanky as the game progresses, but i feel like skarner has way more utility. Make sure not to feed him and you'll be fine!

VS

Elise

Medium

Pretty easy to handle, care for her damage.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

Eve is just annoying. She can become super strong when ahead or super weak when behind, there's really no inbetween. Try to countergank lanes where you think she'll show up. Your damage is close to equal (she does a bit more early), but you have more utility.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

He doesn't have shit on you, but nor do you on him. He has a really slow clear and if you can catch him with his pants down he will get destroyed. Try to outscale him and gank all the lanes pre 6, when he can't(that efficiently). Your ult also counters his in a way! Fiddle flashing into your team? Drag him out!

VS

Gangplank

Easy

Yarrrrrr, he has a slower clear time than you, and duels worse if you can catch him off guard. Care at your red tho, his lvl 2 can be scary if he catches you off guard. Just outscale and outgank him.

VS

Hecarim

Medium

Hecarim has became stronker as of late, and is now considered medium. He can do tons of deeps and has great teamfighting presence. Try to get some early ganks in aswell as couterganks.

VS

Jarvan IV

Medium

A mediocre matchup for skarner. His clear time is slower, but his ganks and duelling power are terror. Careful if you want to counterjungle, he will most likely kill you if he finds you in the wrong place at the wrong time. Play safe, countergank lanes and outscale him.

VS

Jax

Medium

He scales better, but it takes him REALLY long due to lackluster farm as a jungler. He is super squishy early but dishes out tons of damage, don't fight him after 6. You can 1v1 him before.

VS

Kha'Zix

Medium

He can blow people up late, but he will struggle early. Go do him in at his red level 2 if possible!

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

Lee sin is a popular jungeler that can make your life miserable. You want to be sure to have your support ward the entrance to your wraiths, since he might be looking to kill you at your red at level 2. If you dodge his Q you MIGHT be able to kill him in a 1v1, but i wouldn't try it, it's way too risky. Make sure to tell your team to play safe early, since lee falls off heavy while you don't.

VS

Malphite

Medium

He scales better, but has a really slow clear and super weak ganks early. Counterjungle as much as possible, he will NEVER kill you in a 1v1 situation (maybe at the 55th minute with a full build)

VS

Maokai

Medium

This matchup can go either way. Your kits are quite similar, his being a tad more defensive. You can easily duel him in his jungle, but he can get away at will. If he has a level advantage on you he will most likely destroy you, so beware. Countergank his early ganks and win the game.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

Squishy early, slow clear. Go bone him at his red asap! You scale better and if he misses the hook, he can't land a gank. You do way more damage aswell, so just go bash his big skull in and send him back to the depths.

VS

Nocturne

Medium

careful with this guy. He has a good clear, strong early damage (you still beat him lvl 2-3-4-5) and can countergank to a great extent. Try to counter him at his red lvl 2 and get a quicker lvl 6. You scale quite equally, but you will bring more utility while he will bring more damage and pressure.

VS

Nunu

Hard

Nunu is simply broken atm. His clearspeed is unmatched and he's relevant throughout the whole game. What you have that he doesn't, however, is a really beast initiate. Look for ganks alot and try to ward your/his/both jungle entrances to prevent invades and remember to always keep dragon/baron warded. Nunu can solo dragon at level 5(even earlier sometimes) and baron at 15 provided he gets some items.

VS

Sejuani

Hard

Very strong currently, changed to hard. Care for her counterganks. Luckily, you outscale her.

VS

Shaco

Hard

He can escape you forever, he has higher damage early and he will gank all your lanes before you can even kill your own blue buff. What to do? Countergank and wait for him to fall off. Tell your lanes to play really passive. Try to get 6 asap and gank for your team.

VS

Shen

Easy

You have a faster clear, you scale equally and you have equal presence in teamfights. His ult is annoying and he gets supertanky late. Try to disable him early or gank alot.

VS

Shyvana

Hard

Shyvana has been buffed to infinity and beyond and is now one of the most annoying opponents you can have. She will outdamage you, outscale you and outjungle you no matter what. Your only hope is ganking efficiently and pray your team carries

VS

Skarner

Medium

SKARNERCEPTION?

VS

Trundle

Medium

Trundle, even after rework, is pretty meh. I don't find him too hard to jungle against but if you get counterganked early you might get in trouble. Don't 1v1 him either.

VS

Udyr

Medium

Udyr is pretty similar to skarner in his style of play as a disruptive tank, however he does have better dueling potential than you, so be careful not to get caught out by him. Your ganks are stronger so try to utilize that.

VS

Vi

Hard

Vi is currently FOTM and extremely hard to deal with. She outdamages you, has better mobility, is equally tanky and can initiate better. Real pain to deal with.

VS

Xin Zhao

Medium

Has a huge early game, so take care for counterganks/invades. After 6 you can start making plays against his team.

Early game Back to Top

You want to farm your jungle and provide some ganks on easily gankable lanes (low mobility/overpushed top/mid). At 6 you want to use your insane flash ult gank to land a kill for any of your lanes, preferrably your ad carry, but any is fine. Play safe early since you haven't got too many items yet.

Mid game Back to Top

Focus on getting tanky. Initiate dragon fights with flash ult on their AP/AD carry. Keep ganking lanes. Buy a lot of wards and keep vision. Vision is key to winning mid game and the game in general.

Late game Back to Top

You will start some hefty teamfights. Your goal is always to catch the enemy ap/ad out of position. After that GET OFF THEM and start peeling for your own carries. Skarner excels at AoE crowd control. You can literally make sure your ad/ap carry never gets hurt by those nasty bruisers, so make sure you do so.

About Me Back to Top

My name is Muffit, i was 2300+ elo back in season 2, and i got 90+ points top in season 3, with 3 accounts in diamond 1. Skarner was my 2nd most played after lee sin, and i feel like i'm one of the more competent skarner players on euw. Looking forward to the skarner changes.

Currently challenger on EU-NE and mid-high D1 on euw. Haven't played a lot of skarner yet in s4, but i'm going to try him out once the changes go through.

Making a new account? Just started playing? It would help me alot if you could use this link: http://signup.leagueoflegends.com/?ref=4e72115499800008272556!
