Summoner Spells Back to Top

For Jungle, 11.png  is absolutly necessary. Especially in the new one!

As the second Summoner Spell I take 4.png , because it is the most useful one. You can escape well or use it to get your enemy (During ganks par example).

Other alternatives for the second spells are 3.png  or  14.png . Sure, they are nice to gank or to chase, but the only chance to escape will be your Ultimate in this case.

6.png can be whise in some situations. Sometimes it is better than 4.png  for escaping and chasing, especially if you have to close a huge gap. You should test with which of the spells you prefere playing. I recommend to test 6.pngbefore using it in Rankeds.

Runes Back to Top

  • 9x
+0.95 attack damage Greater Mark of Attack Damage
  • 9x
+0.16 magic resist per level Greater Glyph of Scaling Magic Resist
  • 9x
+1 armor Greater Seal of Armor
  • 3x
+2.25 attack damage Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage

You need as much attack as possible for the jungle to survive with as much life as possible to gank. Thats why I take these Runs. Your Q stacks with your additional attack, so it is nice to have some additional damage in the beginning.
The reason, why I don't take Amor-Penetration Runes are  1039_32.png and your Masteries . The item gives 10 True Damage against every monster.  And your Skilltree adds +8% Armor Penetration and +5 Armor Penetration. It makes your Amor-Penetration-Runes unnecessary.
In addition you have a passive which gives you +15% Armor Penetration on every targeted enemy!!

Why you need yellow Flat-Armor-Runes is easy. You die without them.

Magic Resist per Level are important to survive in midgame.

In some cases there are heavy early mages (in the enemy jungle). In this case i would take the option of FLAT MAGIC RESISTANCE Glyphs. Because these mages like Evelynn or Amumu can deal decend damage you need to survive in the early game. To support this the early magic resistance can be really helpful.

Movementspeed Glyphs?!?!

In a comment somebody supposed to be also able to use movementspeed Glyphs. This can be useful while ganking but decrases especially the early jungling time. If you are used to Xin Zhao and gank really often these Quints can be very helpfully. Also in the later phase of a game Xin can become up to about 450+ movement speed (with only Zeal and the imporved shoes) which helps you chasing down enemies. Movement speed always is a great ability. Nothing is more dangerous than a fast roamer.

In Season 3 the masteries have to fit to the build and the gameplay. And especially the gameplay is only tanky. So also set your Masteries into the tank tree and the the offense where it is needed. These are good masteries for jungling in Season 3. I tried them quiet often and it always works in the jungle. Your damage is still great because of the offensive Runes and Xin Zhao for natural :D

Just keep maxing your Q.
In addition you need your W for Attackspeed and the Liferegeneration in the Jungle and your E for ganking in combination with Q and W.

Always activate your E before you use your Q, because it reduces the cooldown of all spells by one second per hit (max 3 secs).
This fact also makes you have your ultimate more often.

It is important to use the ultimate immediatly after charging into your enemies because it deals more damage the more life they got and you focus this one you charged on. The others get pushed back.

What about maxing E first?

Especially if this guide is used as a toplane guide maxing the E can be better. Also in the jungle maxing your E is better for ganking for sure. The problem is the following: With the blue buff at beginng you have no mana issues. But later on if you use the E to clear the jungle the mana can become a huge problem. So the next step is not to use the E in the jungle, which decreases your jungle clearing time a little bit.
But if you gank a lane now you will be much stronger. The better slow is the first reason, but think about this a little bit more. The cooldown will drop so maybe you can use the E twice while ganking at higher levels.

(Thanks to the comments at this point. Many of them are about maxing Q or E first. If lolking implements another skilltree i will add the other option here for sure)

Items Back to Top

Starting Items

    Simply the best!

Core Items

This is the new Season 3 Build: Heath without end and tanky as fast as possible
This was a build in S2. Also works in S3 but better build the new way.

Situational Items

So here we got a new build for Season 3. Building health and resistance is reasonable here because warmorgs e.g. got a buff. For m res still get a Maw of M. to also get some damage into this build.
Build with heavy armor and health because of Frozen Mallet but still a good damage to focus Carrys.
Get a mixed build with Guardian Angel and resistance to initiate fights and not die immediately.
Build with an extremely high damage-output. Appropriate in games with another tank. This only works if you are not in the middle of the fight; so watch out.
This was usual build in S2 with a mage on midlane, a carry and something tanky on ap or ad top.

For the new jungle you should go for 1039_32.png  with 5x 2003_32.png . It also works with 1029_32.png and 5x 2003_32.png but jungling works better and especially faster with 1039_32.png and pots. The money you have to spend is the same. With Armor Seals you will be fine.

First step:

Try to farm up to at least 800 gold to purchase  1001_32.png3106_32.png + 2003_32.png.
From now on the jungle will be easier to clear and it is time to find the right mix of farming and ganking.

Changes are made from here on

Because of the new Season, Patches and Gameplay-Changes I had to make some changes here too. Building health becomes more and more popular because it got buffed. Especially Warmorgs becomes reasonable on many champions.

Second step 2.0:

3154_32.png , 1011_32.png and 1001_32.png for faster ganks and survivability are the items you want now. You need 2350 gold. This seems kinda expensive and this is corret, but you should be able to farm the jungle quiet fast. Go back once or twice more if you really need to. After wriggles you should be able to clear the jungle without pots anymore so purchase this one at first.

Third step 2.0:

Now you got the core build and go on as you prefere. Think about the following:

What does the team need? / What is missing in the team? - Possible anwers are Tank, Damage, Nothing at all.

If the answer is Tank:

  • Go for 3083_32.png or 3068_32.png and maybe build the next one afterwards. This does not improve your damage but your team will get a tank with a great initiation and focus. Also your damage at the enemy carry or squishies in general will be high enough anyway somehow.
If the answer is Damage:
  • Anyway go for something tanky. It wont be wrong to get 3083_32.png but if you really prefere get 3022_32.png. Keep staying in Season 3 by become at least a little bit more tanky with damage and health items like 3071_32.png and/or 3156_32.png.

Fourth step 2.0:

Now you should be a beast if the game is still running. Focus on initiating and killing the enemy carry. Get other survivabilitly items like 3143_32.png3110_32.png3102_32.png or even  3065_32.png. (Or one of these mentioned above you did'nt buy yet)

__________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Here I left the old version of the guide for some reason. Just not to delete it and maybe still read it.

Second step 1.0:

3154_32.png + 3044_32.png are your task now. You need 2365 gold to finish these two items.
Farm in jungle and gank. It is possible that you have to go back before you collected enough, but just keep going on and get them.

Third step 1.0:

At first you need boots. Now you need to decide, whether 3047_32.png  or 3111_32.png  is better.
3086_32.png  is nice for getting more Attackspeed now. If you really get ****** up from mid you should buy 3155_32.png  instead.

Fourth step 1.0:

Decide first:
  • "Do I need to tank more?"                                                                                                                                     In this case you should get your 3022_32.png  as fast as possible and go on buying another 3044_32.png . It is needed for      3078_32.png  at the end. For the next itemslot you can get 3071_32.png  or 3156_32.png  for more damage and magic-resistance.
  • "Can I just go the Damage-Way-of-Life?"                                                                                                            In this case you can get 3071_32.png  now and finish your 3078_32.png. Even here you need to become at least a bit tanky. Otherwise the Lategame will be horrible. Choose between 3026_32.png  and 3143_32.png-

Fifth step 1.0:

For the last itemslot you have many options:

3072_32.png3046_32.png3068_32.png

3143_32.png3026_32.png(in case you don't have it.)

Upgrading shoes:

Since the Preseason 3 Patch we can upgrade our shoes for some additional effects.

I prefer 3267_32.png (any kind of boots with this upgrate). Your movementspeed is temporary increased while attacking an enemy. And what is Xin's job? Just chasing the Carry. This shoes help you not to get out of range.

Item discussion/information

  • 3190_32.png Some players or even lots of players are buying this item. I am not a real fan of it. One aspect is right: It gives a plenty of stats which are "okay" at all but does not fit into a later game phase as I think. Especially not to a bruiser like Xin. You will sell this item again... It costs 2000 gold and gives you +425 Health, 10% Cooldown reduction, health-regeneration and the active shield. AT this point: The shield is awesome to "surprise" an enemy if you know what I mean. For tactical things this item can be useful. But better buy 1011_32.png for 1000 gold and 1028_32.png1006_32.png1006_32.png for 635 gold (1835 gold together). The warmorgs will cost additional 730 gold. And when we compare these two items you have this Locket or a Warmorgs for abour 500 gold more. You will buy the warmorgs. The health effect is doubled, the health regeneration also available, the shield unnecessary (because you got more additional life from the warmorgs than this active from the locket can give you) and the Cooldown reduction is the only thing what is missing. But be honest: You never will buy this Locket because of its cooldown, wont you? .... So better don't get this item and leave it for supporters.
  • 3025_32.png This new item can be very useful to CC the enemy team. The only problem: This gives you AP instead of AD. So the question is: Do I need this item to CC the enemy team or don't I? The answer is simple: You don't need it. Your E has a slow which should be enough for your team to realize attacking the enemies. And if you really want to slow the enemies somehow with an initiate get Randuins.

Alistar

Easy

Alone he isn't dangerous, but care if he comes with some of his mates.

VS

Amumu

Easy

With your passive heal and high early damage output, Amumu has no chance in 1vs1.
There is no danger.

VS

Cho'Gath

Medium

Cho can become a problem because of his tankyness and high damage output at the same time.

VS

Dr. Mundo

Hard

Mundo is a hard enemy if played well. He deals a high damage with much life and escaping is almost impossible, because of his Q.

VS

Evelynn

Medium

Don't underestimate her Q and her movement speed while chasing.
Care not to get trapped at blue at the beginning.

VS

Fiddlesticks

Easy

Fiddle has no chance against you.
Low health, low resistance -> Easy

VS

Hecarim

Medium

He deals some damage, have a high movement speed, but not so much CC.

VS

Jax

Hard

Jax is a hard opponent.
With his Q he can simply chase you, deals high damage with his W and stuns you with his E and every attack is blocked.

VS

Kha'Zix

Hard

In the jungle you are isolated, so his Q deals additional damage.
Take care of his spellheal from his W. He can easily escape/gank you with his E.

VS

Lee Sin

Hard

Lee Sin has the advantage to work with energy and starts with red. Take care of your Redbuff and care not get into a fight against him.

VS

Malphite

Medium

Malphite can't really kill you but is tanky. So take care not to get killed by his mates in a fight against him.

VS

Maokai

Easy

Maokai should not be a problem for you.
His damage output is low and yours is high.

VS

Nautilus

Easy

He doesn't deal much damage. He can only kill you with his mates.

VS

Nocturne

Medium

Nocturne can become dangerous. With his Q he got lots of attack and his fear is comparable with your third Q-hit. Better meet when your health is higher and run otherwise.

VS

Nunu

Medium

Nunu is a hard Counterjungler, but can't kill you. So take care of your jungle camps.

VS

Olaf

Medium

You are a gap closer in contrast to Olaf. So you got a advantage against him. But take care: The lower his health the higher his attackspeed is and he can have lifesteal with his W.

VS

Pantheon

Hard

If played well (http://www.lolking.net/guides/51853) he can be really annoying, because of his stun, block, short cooldown on Q and the lasthit-crit.
Care of him.

VS

Rammus

Easy

Only take care not to get killed by his mates if you meet him.

VS

Rengar

Hard

Rengar's damage output is just insane!! Don't run through bushes if you need to escape otherwise you are simply dead.

Riven

Medium

Riven is never oom and her passive is very strong at the beginning!
Take care of your Redbuff.

VS

Sejuani

Easy

Just kill this pig :D

VS

Shaco

Medium

Always try to get your buffs, before Shaco can get it.

VS

Shen

Medium

Shen's passive and Q can hurt. Be careful with him and don't overextend yourself.

VS

Shyvana

Medium

Shyvana is a really fast jungler. This makes her to your personal enemy. She has no mana and can counter you. Clearing your camps is one of her favours.

Skarner is weak at beginnig and hard mana dependent. Steal one blue and he is ******.

VS

Trundle

Medium

Care of his healing reduction and don't undererstimate him.

VS

Tryndamere

Medium

In the beginning you should get him easily, so get him in your early game!

VS

Udyr

Hard

None can beat Udyr in 1vs1 at beginning. Try not to meet him.

VS

Volibear

Medium

If Volibear is played well he can deal a decend amount of damage. Don't forget his passive, you usually don't have Ignite.

VS

Warwick

Medium

His has a strong heal and deals some damage.

Xin Zhao

Hard

Mirror-Fight. Play Rankeds :D

VS

Zed

Zed is everthing you want. Low health, low resistance and no CC.

Jungle Route Back to Top

Jungling

maplol2.jpg

The usual way of Jungling

Description:

  1. Wolves        weis.png       Ask for help in the chat
  2. Blue            bla.png    for not losing too many life.
  3. Wraiths       jelb.png
  4. Red             rot.png
  5. Golem         popel.png

Counterjungling

After taking your blue you can go into the enemy jungle. Trap the other jungler in the bush close to the red. Watch him loosing life and Smite the buff away. After this you should be able to kill him easily.

If you get countered

If you get countered (usually your blue will be done) just start at your Wraihts. Do the redbuff and the golems after. You should have enough life left to gank now. Otherwise just go back to wolves to reach level 3 (to get the charge). Keep farming and maybe try to steal the enemy buff(s) aswell.

Basic (Spell-) Information Back to Top

This part of the guide should give you some general and basic information about Xin Zhao. How to play him well, how to play with your own Spells and Summoner Spells, and how to work in a team. (I will put in some videos in this section to point out what is excatly meant.

Always activate your W before Q. This is important because with each of the "Three Talon Strike"- hit your cooldown on the attackspeed buff will be immediately decreased by one second (so it commulates up to three seconds - enough to mention this here).

Another important information is about your ultimate. Many players don't use it whisely at all. You can focus on ONE enemy with pressing your ultimate. Also it deals the more damage the more life the enemies got at the moment - so use it immediately after joining the fight to deal more damage.

Advanced Tactics Back to Top

Important notifications and knowledge a Xin Zhao player should have.

If you are new at Xin Zhao better read the section "Basic (Spell-) Information" before reading this part.

And if you really want to get deeper into playing Xin Zhao this section is important for you. Maybe some of these tips are easy to understand but not self-evident for every player.

The usual gank combination

Wait for a good moment to initiate the lane. If you have redbuff this will work the more better because of its slow. Also you will buy  3044_32.png which helps at chasing a lot. Try to reach the enemy which should be killed before using your E!! (further infomartion about this at "Closing gaps").

Closing gaps

(gap is a "hole" someone creates. This means for example to get away from a melee like Xin Zhao. But he is a gap closer because of his E which closes this "hole" again by charging to the enemy)
There are enemies like this annoying one 81_icon_64.png . He got an own further 'Flash'. While ganking champions like him try to keep your charge (E) to close the gap he wants to create. In general you should be fast enough to reach him without using your charge. The same fact is important to 'counter' flashes.

Other Champions with 'escape-abilities': 103_icon_64.png84_icon_64.png51_icon_64.png42_icon_64.png60_icon_64.png105_icon_64.png79_icon_64.png104_icon_64.png120_icon_64.png59_icon_64.png24_icon_64.png38_icon_64.png55_icon_64.png121_icon_64.png64_icon_64.png7_icon_64.png111_icon_64.png76_icon_64.png58_icon_64.png92_icon_64.png35_icon_64.png98_icon_64.png102_icon_64.png18_icon_64.png62_icon_64.png238_icon_64.png
Maybe you mentioned: There are lots of champions which have something like an ability to escape. So this point can become really important.

Escaping with your ultimate

Another point for Xin Zhao is to escape with the help of the ultimate's aoe-pushback. Just mention the following (very impoartant!): "Is anyone of my chasing enemies focused by me?" Because this one won't be pushed away.

Here is a video how to do it:

Here the video how NOT to use it:

If there is no chance to escape and there is only one or two enemies you should fight with Xin Zhao. Because of your passive heal, crowd control (=cc), extremly high damage output and the ability (ultimate) to focus one enemy, you maybe can go out of this hopeless situation with an additional kill for you - good trade at all. But only do this if there is really no chance to escape and you have to run.
