Summoner Spells Back to Top

Typical summoner spells for an AD carry

-1.png Cleanse is good vs. high CC team compositions and vs. CC lanes. It allows you to get out of sticky situation especially on Ezreal, when you can cleanse and arcane shift out of a stun. It also counters 3.png and 14.png.

-7.png Heal is sort of a tricky spell to use. You can use heal to  bait fights and save an ally, but is countered by 14.png. Heal counters 1.png. When using heal to bait, always try to anticipate the enemies Ignite to make full use of the heal. If you know you can survive a full ignite, try to use heal AFTER ignite is off of you to maximize its effect as well. Using it when ignited will reduce its effect by half.

When it comes down to it, take 4.png and the other spell is preference. Flash is key though to escaping instantly and dodging spells; even picking up kills.

Barrier is decent if you can use it timed on blocking a damage of burst as it only lasts 2 seconds.

Runes Back to Top

  • 9x
+1.28 armor penetration Greater Mark of Armor Penetration
  • 9x
+1.34 magic resist Greater Glyph of Magic Resist
  • 9x
+1 armor Greater Seal of Armor
  • 3x
+2.25 attack damage Greater Quintessence of Attack Damage

These runes are quite standard AD carry runes. You can also run all Armor Penetration reds  if you feel you can last hit minions well enough, the math between the two is very negligible though where armor pen does SLIGHTLY more damage later.

If you are new to the game I would recommend the first set to have an easier time to last hit since last hitting is key for playing AD Carry.

Armor yellows are pretty standard as well. It allows you to trade with enemy champions more effectively and take less damage from minions and physical damage. You will be fighting another AD carry (MOST of the time) in a bot lane 2v2 so armor runes will help in damage exchanges.

Flat Magic Resist blues are good for the early game vs. champions like 37_icon_64.png,42_icon_64.png,16_icon_64.png,117_icon_64.png. These champions are high harass AD carries / supports and having the Magic Resist helps A LOT in exchanges. It also helps later on in the game when you start to group up and team fight.

These runes allow for a strong early game and good poking potential which is where caitlyn excels.

Utility: 0

This mastery build maximizes damage and also gives a decent amount of utility with mana regen and increased buff duration. The mana regen is very good on Caitlyn in the utility tree. It allows you to use more spells in lane whether it be to harass your opponent or to last hit minions. It is very hard to zone Caitlyn from creeps and this utilizes her mana to push more often.

The increased buff duration in utility is very useful mid-late game when you are getting the red/Lizard buff and/or blue/Golem buff. Having longer lasting buffs makes you that more deadly and stronger in the later stages of the game. It isn't as significant early game since your jungler typically needs the first few buffs.

These are my preferred masteries and fit to my playstyle for Caitlyn.

This is my standard build order for Caitlyn. Max Piltover peacemaker to push, do insane burst damage, and its range allows for multiple uses.

There is no other reason to NOT max Q first.

Between Trap (W) and Caliber net (E), I like maxing E before W since traps aren't very effective until later in the game when you are pushing or setting up for baron. Having the reduced cooldown and increased slow duration on your E makes it easier to kite and run away in teamfights.

Get ult whenever you can: ranking it up increases its damage, range and reduces the cooldown. You can use this ult to snipe stragglers after a team fight or to do a ton of damage before a team fight starts. Overall, useful ultimate but not the best.

Situational Items

    Other team has high CC
    Interesting I LIKE

Starting off with boots and 3 health potions is very standard. It allows you to escape ganks easier, gives sustain in lane and allows you to outplay your opponent. Health pots are key to have to stay in lane and farm and using them during skirmishes/kills helps to survive with barely any health left. There have been several times where I forget about my potion in a teamfight and afterwards I know it would have allowed me to live. Even with a 16_icon_64.png, the boots/3x pot start is nice since bot lanes have evolved from just healing and farming and trying to outlast your opponent.

For Caitlyn, starting Longsword or Doran's blade allows for easier pushing and Long sword gets you closer to 1053_32.png which allows for sustain in lanes. Since they buffed base movespeed, starting boots isn't as necessary and Caitlyn has such a long range so D. Blade or Long sword helps a lot and makes you do insane damage for pushing and poking.

Situational items such as Quicksilver sash and Banshee's Veil depend on your positioning and the enemy team.

Quicksilver sash cleanses all debuffs on your champion such as stuns, summoner spells, and other spell-effects. It is moderately cheap and a good way to get quick magic resist.

Banshee's Veil is good vs. champions that don't have poke but a hard initiate such as 54_icon_64.png12_icon_64.png. It also gives a large amount of health and mana to survive longer.

3026_64.png is also very situational. In the late-game where death can cost the game, this item is very useful in surviving large fights with high chances of death such as 103_icon_64.png and 84_icon_64.png

Stattik shiv and Sword of the Divine are interesting items I've tried. They seem to be for fun and mostly for split pushing. Stattik shiv gives you an AOE push when you get 100 stacks on it (by moving or attacking things you get stacks) and it displaces damage that hits up to 4 targets and can crit. It seems pretty good

SoTD seems very broken if you can get it. When you activate it, your next 3 auto attacks will be crits and your attack speed is dramatically increased over the duration.

VS

Ashe

Easy

Caitlyn should have no problem fighting Ashe early on. You can abuse your range and poke the *%$@ out of her :). Abuse your ability to push on her as well; early game her volley is a VERY long cooldown and you can abuse it. Always avoid taking free damage and poke when you know you won't get attacked back.

VS

Corki

Medium

Again, abuse your range vs Corki but try not to be super aggressive as he can turn on you when you move in to poke him he can turn around and hit you + a phos. bomb. Avoiding trading and doing ALL-ins vs. corki and stick to pushing / poking him. Your goal in lane is to out-cs your opponent as Caitlyn; kills are nice but they rarely come by in higher elo games unless you completely outplay them.

VS

Draven

Hard

Try to outpush Draven. He will win all trades with you so avoid trading damage with him. Use your range and try to poke him down by pushing to his tower and hitting him under it (obviously avoid the tower damage). Focus on farming; 1 misplay and Draven will kill you.

VS

Ezreal

Easy

This is quite an easy match-up and it is a skill matchup. The general plan is to poke him when he goes for CS and try to push unless you know you will get ganked. Use creeps to your advantage and abuse your range.

VS

Graves

Medium

Graves is quite tanky and has a short cooldown dash. Try to push the lane and poke him under tower. Avoid buckshots and poke him when you can get in free damage. Focus on pushing and winning in CS as it will be hard to kill Graves. He can E in and Q you if you're not careful.

VS

Kog'Maw

Medium

Caitlyn has the early game advantage. Push and poke Kogmaw down as he can only poke back when he activates W. Disengage when he does and continue poking. Once he is level 6 though, he becomes quite strong so avoid doing straight up fights and focus on out-csing him.

VS

Miss Fortune

Medium

This is an interesting matchup. Try to just push and poke and do free damage. Avoid confrontations and all-ins as MF does insane dualing damage.

VS

Sivir

Easy

You have all the tools to destroy sivir early on. Abuse your range and pushing ability as caitlyn and poke her. After she gets a few items though, avoid her boomerang blade as usual and try to abuse your range to be able to outplay her. Never forget that bot is a 2v2 lane though and don't get all-in'd by something like Sivir/taric.

VS

Tristana

Medium

Trist is decent vs. Cait if you let Trist all in you. Try to push trist and poke her when you can. Worry about her level 6 as she gets insane burst and kill potential. Focus on pushing her under tower to make it hard for her to CS.

VS

Twitch

Medium

Push twitch to tower and avoid getting hit by his W and his auto attacks. Poke when you can and watch out for when he suddenly disappears. He can kill you quite fast at level 6 and even before that if you aren't careful.

VS

Varus

Medium

Push Varus to tower and poke him there. Dodge his spells and you'll be fine. Avoid getting hit by his ult when you don't know where the jungler is. I would recommend running Cleanse vs Varus.

VS

Vayne

Easy

Early on you should be able to abuse Vayne and poke her either by pushing to tower and poking or poking her when she goes for creeps. Be careful for when Vayne is 6 as she can definitely all in you if you are out of position. Abuse your range.
