Summoner Spells Back to Top

  • 4.png Flash is mandatory for the added mobility. It's a versatile spell that can help you with escaping, repositioning, and initiating.
  • 14.png Ignite is very good for snowballing a matchup and provides damage to finish off enemies throughout the game. Also useful for getting double kills when the enemy jungler ganks.
  • 12.png Teleport is a great summoner spell for providing pressure on other lanes, control objectives, and defend towers.
  • 6.png Ghost is a strong spell for teamfights that allows you to quickly reposition and move out of harm's way.
  • 3.png Exhaust is a good choice for the added safety if you are against an assassin, and is great for shutting down strong enemies in teamfights.
  • 21.png7.png Heal and Barrier are similar defensive summoner spells, but are less effective than Exhaust for surviving tough assassin matchups. They aren't needed against long ranged champs as long as you have good positioning.
  • 1.png Cleanse good for some matchups, but shouldn't be needed with good positioning. Also, if you don't use it often it's easy to get out of practice with it.
  • 11.png We aren't jungling! 
The summoner spell I personally take in the large majority of my games is Ignite, though the other options are strong alternatives and you should adjust based on your confidence in the matchup and your playstyle. I play aggressively and aim for kills in laning phase to snowball, which is augmented by the damage that Ignite provides. 

Exhaust is a strong spell that is strongest against assassins, but is a viable option in any game. Though it may seem like a passive summoner spell, having it in your possession can allow you to play more aggressively. Every game will have a marksman which can be greatly shut down through Exhaust, and it can help save you in dangerous situations.

Teleport is a versatile option that can fit both passive and aggressive playstyles. It can allow you to sustain better while in lane against a hard-harassing enemy or make aggressive plays across the map against those that overextend. 

Ghost is a versatile summoner spell that allows you to play more aggressively in teamfights due to the movement speed it provides as well as help to save you from dangerous situations. However, note that it has little usefulness in lane and can put you at a disadvantage.

The above runes provide damage, CDR, and HP. The CDR/LVL glyphs help shorten Zyra's long R cooldown. HP/LVL seals are helpful to increase Zyra's low base health. However, the above page is an ideal and risky base page that provides little defense. Based on the matchup, adjust your runes accordingly.

A page that provides sufficient magic resistance to survive hard AP matchups while still providing 10% CDR which is needed to lower the cooldown of your R. If you want 15% CDR you can take 3 CDR/LVL Quintessences, though I don't think it's necessary and fill my last slot with a Magic Penetration Quintessence.

2. Armor 
  • 9 Magic Penetration Marks
  • 5 Health/LVL Seals and 4 Flat Armor Seals
  • 6 CDR/LVL Glyphs, 3 Magic Penetration Glyphs
  • 2 Flat Armor Quintessences, 1  Magic Penetration Quintessence
A page that provides sufficient armor to survive hard AD matchups while still providing CDR. If you are not confident in the matchup you can choose to take 3 Flat Armor Quintessences, though it is not necessary.

3. Movement Speed

Ferocity Tree:

Sorcery: Boosts your damage as an AP caster.

Expose Weakness: Zyra's biggest strength is her teamfighting and this mastery further augments that.

Natural Talent: Flat AP and AD is more helpful than spellvamp, which Zyra only receives 1/3 benefit from due to her spells being AoE.

Double Edged Sword: Increases damage greatly in all situations. Even though you take 2.5% more damage, it isn't a huge issue since you are already squishy and should avoid taking damage.

Cunning Tree:

Savagery: Helpful for last hitting, but Wanderer is a viable choice.

Assassin: Helps with getting picks and solo kills. However, Secret Stash is strong when laning, and if you know your jungler will be giving you blue buff you can also take Runic Affinity.

Merciless: Strong for boosting overall damage, and Meditation's mana regeneration isn't necessary.

Greenfather's Gift: Extra damage from bushes is strong when ambushing. Dangerous game is another option if you want more survivability.

Precision: Flat magic penetration is always great for boosting Zyra's damage.

Thunderlord's Decree: Amazing for lane harass, poke, and burst throughout the game.

Zyra's build order is highly based on preference and playstyle. I prefer maxing E first for better burst, waveclear, and CC duration, but Q max or a mix of Q and E is a viable option if you prefer more reliable damage.

Passive: Garden of Thorns

Zyra's passive, Garden of Thorns passively spawns seeds around Zyra periodically. It's disabled in bush in order to help Zyra successfully pull off ambushes. While the seed spawning is RNG, there are certain factors that will affect the area seeds spawn in. Seeds have a tendency to spawn near jungle entrances and in nearby bushes. Zyra can have up to 8 seeds planted and they last for 45 seconds each. In the laning phase, keep seeds spawned in areas that the enemy jungler could potentially come from. This will allow you to spawn plants and deter the jungler from that area. In mid and late game, spawn seeds around while sieging in order to zone and counterengage and around to provide control over Dragon and Baron.

Q: Deadly Spines 

Zyra's Q, Deadly Spines is a ranged skillshot that deals damage in a rectangle AoE after a short delay. If there is a nearby seed, it creates a Thorn Spitter with 750 range that damages enemies. It applies spell effects such as Rylai's, Ludens, and Liandry's. Zyra's Q is mainly useful in the early game for spawning plants, and does nice poke damage in conjunction with plants+autos without being leveled first. Also provides AoE damage and plants to zone in teamfights. This is the basic ability that should be maxed second, after E.

W: Rampant Growth

Zyra's W, Rampant Growth passively increases the health pool of Zyra's plants, and when casted places a seed on the ground that lasts for 60 seconds and provides vision in a small area. Zyra can hold 2 seeds at a time and they can be destroyed by enemies walking over of them. Zyra's W is the basic ability maxed last because it does not provide any more damage or CC as it levels up like Q and E.

E: Grasping Roots

Zyra's E, Grasping Roots is a slow traveling linear skillshot that deals AoE damage and roots all enemies it hits. Unlike many other skillshots that pass through enemies, Zyra's E does not lose any damage or CC duration for every enemy it hits. Zyra's E is great for picking off enemies and setting up her combo. Try to use it over walls so that enemies can't react quickly, or send it through to the backline in a chaotic teamfight and burst their squishies. If it passes by a nearby seed, the seed will turn into a Vine Lasher, a plant that deals damage and slows enemies but has a short range of 400. Zyra's E is the basic ability maxed first because of the increased CC duration which keeps enemies in your ultimate and plants longer, greatly increasing her early kill potential. 

R: Stranglethorns

Zyra's R, Stranglethorns is a ranged spell that deals damage as it spreads out into a large circle AoE from the origin. After a delay, it will knockup all enemies inside. Zyra's ultimate is amazing for teamfighting, disengaging, setting up a combo, or providing large burst. It also respawns your plants with full HP and increases their DPS by boosting their damage dealt by 50%. Zyra's ultimate is leveled up at levels 6, 11, and 16 for the increased damage and reduced cooldown.

    movement speed helps with positioning, AP helps for damage, and the high damage on passive deals a lot of damage and helps proc spell effects. great for poke and bursting.
    strong build that increases damage greatly while also providing some durability. the last item is situational and should be chosen based on the team comps.

Situational Items

    good magic resistance, cdr, and ap for matchups vs ap assassins or ap heavy teams
    Good first item for sustaining mana and especially helpful for keeping ultimate off cd with the 20% cdr it provides
    provides tankiness and great utility on plants to help peel for carries.
    provides sustain as well as a quick and effective slow with strong damage.
    provides an active with strong base damage for extra burst and utility for dodging spells such as bard R or ashe R.
    helpful for baiting enemy team into overextending and provides some survivability.

Build Orders

Note: The order in which you buy Rabadon and Void Staff depends on the amount of magic resistance they have built. Against enemies that have built lots of magic resistance, build Void Staff. Otherwise, buy Rabadon.

Note: I rarely build Zhonya's on Zyra, and think it is best to rush Liandry's. If you absolutely need it to survive, you can build it. The order in which you should build it depends on how urgently you need it to survive.

Abyssal vs Hard AP Matchup

3151.png/3001.png > 3020.png > 3151.png/3001.png > 3285.png > 3116.png > 3089.png/3135.png > 3089.png/3135.png

Note: Similar to the previous build, replacing Zhonya's with Abyssal. If you absolutely need Abyssal to survive, you can build it. The order in which you should build it depends on how urgently you need it to survive. If possible, buy Liandry's first.

Glass Cannon Damage

3151.png > 3020.png > 3285.png > 3089.png/3135.png > 3089.png/3135.png > Situational Item


Core Items 

3020.png are the best boots for Zyra. Her damage scales very hard with flat magic penetration so these boots will greatly help in increasing her DPS and burst.

3285.png adds some damage that is boosted by your magic penetration which can help with bursting a target or poking. Adds a stack of Thunderlord's, giving Zyra huge burst and poke potential. It also gives 10% movement speed which is helpful for Zyra who needs to position effectively in order to survive.

3151.png gives Zyra even more flat magic penetration, which is a great boost to her overall damage. The %HP burn increases Zyra's poke, and provides extra DPS to both squishy and tanky enemies.

3089.png gives Zyra lots of extra damage against teams with little magic resistance, at the cost of providing no other stats or  utility.

3135.png is great for fighting against teams that have built lots of magic resistance. Provides a very good damage boost for the cost.

Situational Items

3165.png is an item that will provide plenty of mana, allowing you to use your spells more often without going OOM. The 20% CDR also helps with keeping up sustained damage in fights and lowering her ultimate cooldown, allowing her to burst enemies and teamfight more often. The lowered cooldowns also help her peel enemies.

3116.png adds a slow to your spells and plants, allowing them to increase the damage from Liandry's. Great for peeling. Also gives a good health boost, making you harder to kill.

3001.png an item that is good for surviving on Zyra when facing tough AP midlaners or magic damage heavy teams. Also provides CDR.

3152.png while the base stats are mediocre, the flat damage it provides on the active is strong in a burst build. Also, the mobility can help in some situations such as against an enemy Bard for dodging his ultimate.

3030.png the stats are great for helping to make yourself tankier and the flat mana combined with the passive effect gives you sustain on the battlefield which is strong as a mage who lacks natural sustain. Rylai's constant slow effect that works on plants is stronger than GLP's active, but the ice bolts are still good in an AoE combo.

3157.png is great for saving yourself from enemy assassins, but in most situations is not necessary with good positioning, and the active can be useless if you are caught out alone.

Underwhelming Items (Don't Build!)

3174.png is a support item that provides little AP and has a passive that only works on champions with heals or shields.

3040.png makes Zyra's early game weaker while it ramps up which is not optimal, and the mana is excessive for Zyra's needs.

3100.png encourages Zyra to stand still and auto attack, while Zyra is primarily a spellcaster.

3092.png provides lots of gold, but the active has a 90 second CD and is redundant with Rylai's passive already providing a slow. 

3027.png has mediocre base stats and takes time to reach its full potential. GLP is a stronger alternative due to it having an active and stronger initial stats.

Tips and Tricks Back to Top

- Use W for vision in unwarded bushes
- Always cast W after your Q or E so that you don't telegraph where you will cast your spells to your opponent
- Try to ult after or during summoning plants so that they respawn with full hp and 50% bonus damage
- Use plants to apply spell affects such as Luden's, Rylai's, Liandry's, and Thunderlord's Decree
- Block enemy skillshots using plants (especially E which can set up plants faster than Q) by using E in the direction of the enemy and casting W between yourself and them to block the skillshot
- Cast E through walls to make it harder for enemies to react to and dodge
- Detonate enemy traps by spawning plants in the area
- Use plants to take jungle camps over walls
