News Preseason 2017: Support Itemization - First Impressions

by Shakarez on

A big patch just hit the PBE recently with huge preseason changes, most notably the assassins rework.

Amongst the changes are also massive changes to items, with the inclusion of four new items to the game.

In this post, we look at the support/defensive itemization changes that will be live on Patch 6.22, the first patch of preseason that will be out in early November.

Support/Utility Itemization

New items

Knight's Vow

Knight's Vow
Cost: 2400
+400 Health
+100% Base Health Regen
+20 Armor

UNIQUE Active:  Designate an allied champion as your Partner. (90 seconds cooldown)

UNIQUE Passive: If your Partner is nearby, gain +40 additional Armor and +15% Movement Speed towards them.

UNIQUE Passive: If your Partner is nearby, heal for 12% of the damage your Partner deals to champions and redirect 12% of the damage your partner takes from champions to you as true damage (healing and damage redirection are reduced by 50% if you are ranged).

(Champions can only be linked by one Knight's Vow at a time.)

Knight's Vow is one of the new very interesting items that are coming to the live servers soon. Its active and related passives only work with a partner, so it's a more defensive version of Zeke's Harbinger in that regard, you're rewarded by staying close to whomever you link the passive to.

The item's base stats mean the item is not cost effective as you only get 1766 gold (73.6% efficiency) worth of base stats, however, when close to your partner your armor is bolstered up to 60, meaning the item is worth 2566g (106.9% efficiency) and even more if you're running towards your partner and grabbing that sweet 15% Movement Speed buff (3159g worth and 131.6% efficiency).

But the big selling point on this item is obviously its passive. The mechanic functions similarly to Bond of Stone, where the user will redirect incoming damage to his partner toward himself. The added benefit is that unlike Bond of Stone, you will also get healed for 12% of your partner's damage to champions, so you're essentially a walking defensive item for your squishy carry that also replenishes itself.

Who wants this?

Mostly, tank supports such as Braum, Alistar or Leona will want it to protect their AD carries by reducing incoming damage and hopefully healing back up from the damage those carries heal. With that said, it's not completely restricted to this class. Tank top laners and junglers such as Maokai for example can probably also use the item effectively and it can also always be paired with AP Mages or Assassins, depending on who is the main carry in a given game.

Redemption

Redemption
Cost: 2100
+400 Health
+75% Base Health Regen
+75% Base Mana Regen
+10% Cooldown Reduction

UNIQUE Passive:  +10% Heal and Shield Power

UNIQUE Active: Target an area within 5500 range. After 2.5 seconds, call down a beam of light to heal allies for 130-490 (based on target's level) Health, burn enemy champions for 10% of their maximum Health as true damage and deal 250 true damage to enemy minions (120 second cooldown).

Can be used while dead.

(Half effect if the target has been affected by another Redemption recently.)

Redemption is now one of the Forbidden Idol items. The stats on it are rather lackluster (only 1933 gold worth, 92% Gold Efficient) but it's worth mentioning that it has a heal/shield booster stat similar to Ardent Censer or Mikael's Crucible.

Once again, the big selling point of the item is the active. It's absolutely nuts. An AoE Heal that hits the ground after a 2.5 second delay (very similar to Taric's Ultimate: Cosmic Radiance) healing everyone based on their level, burning enemy champions for a percentage of their maximum health.

Things to note:

  • You can use the active while dead
  • The item has a range of 5500 units, so if you're at your tier 2 turret you can use the active up until right in front of your tier 1 turret
  • Heal/Shield Power buffs increase the heal. The heal will already be 10% stronger with Redemption, and you can combine it with other sources such as Ardent Censer (10%), Mikael's Crucible (20%) or Windspeaker's Blessing (15%). If the target being healed has Spirit Visage, the heal on said target will also be amplified by 25%

Who wants this?

This is mostly for those pesky ranged supports. Soraka, Janna, Nami, Karma all use this item extremely well. They all use Windspeaker's Blessing as their keystone and frequently buy items like Mikael's and Ardent Censer meaning their Redemption Heal Active will be even stronger for the team.

Some outliers include Ivern and Taric, tankier champions that still have heals/shields as a core part of their kits.

Aegis Items

Aegis of the Legion

Aegis of the Legion (Current)
Cost: 1500
+200 Health
+20 Magic Resist
+100% Base Health Regen

UNIQUE Passive - Legion: Nearby allied units gain +10 Magic Resist (1100 range).

Aegis of the Legion (PBE)
Cost: 1100
+30 Armor
+30 Magic Resist

(No longer has any kind of Aura attached, only base stats).

Riot is officially removing the aura from the Legion Items. Overall, it just felt like too much of a mandatory purchase for a team's support, jungler or even top laner in order to protect their team from powerful mages or AP assassins. The aura was very non-interactive and anti-fun for mages as their Sorcerer's Shoes purchase would be suddenly almost completely negated against any opponent. This forced Mages to itemize early for a Void Staff in order to do relevant damage to even the squishier or targets and it shafted those who couldn't afford to build an item and had other core item priorities.

Instead the item is now very cheap, simple and efficient puchase (worth 1140g) . It allows supports and tanks to pick up a decent amount of both resistances for a low investment.

The two upgrades for Aegis now give the user the option to go for an armor focused purchase (Banner of Command) or a magic resist/burst focused purchase (Locket of the Iron Solari).

Banner of Command

Banner of Command (Current)
Cost: 2900
+200 Health
+20 Magic Resist
+100% Base Health Regen
+60 Ability Power
+10% Cooldown Reduction

UNIQUE Passive - Legion: Nearby allied units gain +10 Magic Resist (1100 range).

UNIQUE Active - Promote: Greatly increases the power of a lane minion and grants it immunity to magic damage. 120 second cooldown (1200 range).

Banner of Command (PBE)
Cost: 2200
+400 Mana
+60 Armor
+30 Magic Resist
+10% Cooldown Reduction

UNIQUE Active - Promote: Greatly increases the power of a lane minion and grants it immunity to magic damage. 120 second cooldown (1200 range).

Instead of being a hybrid offensive/defensive item Banner is now all about utility. Builds out of Glacial Shroud instead of Fiendish Codex so it gives more Armor and Mana.

Strangely enough, the item used to counter AP waveclear with minions immune to magic damage is now mostly an armor item.

Locket of the Iron Solari

Locket of the Iron Solari (Current)
Cost: 2500
+400 Health
+20 Magic Resist
+100% Base Health Regen
+10% Cooldown Reduction

UNIQUE Passive - Legion: Nearby allied units gain +10 Magic Resist (1100 range).

UNIQUE Active: Shield yourself and nearby allied champions for 2 seconds, absorbing up to 90 - 345 (based on level) damage (60 second cooldown).

Locket of the Iron Solari (PBE)
Cost: 2200
+30 Armor
+60 Magic Resist

UNIQUE Active: Grant a decaying shield to nearby allies for 2.5 seconds that absorbs up to 70-665 (based on level) damage (90 second cooldown).

Riot decided to focus Locket's identity around the shielding aspect. The shield active is now almost twice as strong and lasts for longer, but decays over the duration. Users will want to purchase this mainly to counter magic damage, as most magic damage comes in in bursts. Pressing the shield active in time will be key, as its strength will start decaying right after.

Forbidden Idol Items

Ardent Censer

Ardent Censer (Current)
Cost: 2400
+60 Ability Power
+10% Cooldown Reduction
+50% Base Mana Regen

UNIQUE Passive: +15% Heal and Shield Power

UNIQUE Passive: +8% Movement Speed

UNIQUE Passive: Your heals and shields on allied champion grant them +15% attack speed and +30 on-hit magic damage for 6 seconds.

Ardent Censer (PBE)
Cost: 2300
+60 Ability Power
+10% Cooldown Reduction
+50% Base Mana Regen

UNIQUE Passive: +10% Heal and Shield Power

UNIQUE Passive: +8% Movement Speed

UNIQUE Passive: Your heals and shields on allied champion grant them +20% attack speed and their attacks drain 20 health on-hit for 6 seconds.

Out of the 3 Forbidden Idol items, Ardent Censer is the more offensive option. To reinforce that identity, the attack speed buff is now stronger and despite dealing less 10 magic damage than before, the new iteration allows attackers to drain 20 damage from enemies, meaning it's stronger to supplement and AD Carry's sustain. The heal/shield passive buff is also slightly weaker, but in return Mikael's is now the premiere item for it

Mikael's Crucible

Mikael's Crucible (Current)
Cost: 2400
+35 Magic Resist
+150% Base Mana Regen
+10% Cooldown Reduction

UNIQUE Passive: +15% Heal and Shield Power

UNIQUE Passive - Harmony: Grants 100% base health regen per 5 seconds if your current health percentage is lower than your current mana percentage. Grants 100% base mana regen per 5 seconds if your current mana percentage is lower than your current health percentage.

UNIQUE Active: Removes all stuns, roots, taunts, fears, silences and slows on an allied champion and heals for 150 + (10% of the target's maximum health) (180 second cooldown).

Mikael's Crucible (PBE)
Cost: 2100
+35 Magic Resist
+150% Base Mana Regen
+10% Cooldown Reduction

UNIQUE Passive: +20% Heal and Shield Power

UNIQUE Passive - Harmony: Increases to your % Base Mana Regen stat also increase your % Base Health Regen stat by the same amount.

UNIQUE Active: Cleanses all stuns, roots, taunts, fears, silences and slows on an allied champion and grants them slow immunity for 2 seconds (180 second cooldown).

Successfully cleansing an effect this way grants the ally 40% movement speed for 2 seconds.

Given that items like Redemption and Locket of the Iron Solari already exist to save someone from being bursted down (not two mention a double heal from Redemption+Mikael's would be pretty insane), Mikael's identity as an item is now much more geared towards freeing someone from a powerful CC or a CC chain and allow them to escape it (with the slow immunity+movement speed buff).

The active healing was also exchanged for passive healing, with a big fat 20% buff to heals and shields making it very attractive for premiere healers in the game such as Soraka and Sona.

It's also worth mentioning that the active on Mikael's no longer has a travel effect, it's instant.

Other Minor Changes

Other than these main changes, there were also some minor changes to other items such as Face of the Mountain, Abyssal Scepter, Chalice of Harmony and others.
